I'm from Front Royal Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley so I grew up homeschooled I spent a lot of time at home I spent a lot of time with my family I spent a lot of time playing outside we had a big house a nice big yard so it was fun to be a kid I had a big imagination I grew up in a Mormon home and my name is Tommy Harrison so I was born into a Mormon family I'm the youngest of six kids so that means I didn't have coffee in my house I didn't have r-rated movies I never had alcohol in the home my dad never drank there was a very loving home my family was really close when I was younger we did a lot of family activities so that's that's kind of a snapshot of what it's like to grow up Mormon so it was really slow for me to come out of Mormonism it took me about three years to fully turn away from the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints or the Mormon Church to a Christian understanding at the gospel so one of the hardest things about that is to take all the things that you're taught as a Mormon and completely divorce them from a Christian perspective they use a lot of the same words that we use and to really have a true understanding that the true gospel of the true God it takes a while to forget and to change the things that you were taught to be loving to somebody like a Mormon or a Jehovah's Witness it's really important to understand what they believe so if you're only gonna sling arguments at people if you're only gonna hurl insults you have a lot more problems than trying to convince somebody of the truth you you actually probably need to go back to look at the truth yourself because I believe you have a misunderstanding of what the gospel is in the Gospel message Jesus didn't really hurl insults he didn't try to prove a point he stood in a position of truth in a position of victory and spoke to people who were lost well if you ever approached by a Mormon elder the Mormon missionaries as they're referred to and asked you do you have some time to talk about Jesus well you better say yes you better teach them about Jesus because they actually might not know the things about Jesus that you know so I my name today is to give you an understanding of what Mormon and Mormonism is I want you to walk away with some knowledge and some questions about the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints but what I really want to equip you with is a love for a people that I believe are lost and the desire to be able to reach those people and to love those people so I don't want you coming away from this with scorn in your heart for a group of people that I used to have membership in I believed all the things I'm about to teach you and talk about so for me it's not about winning no we don't have to win this this is not an argument to win this is this is about sharing one of the greatest truths or the greatest truths we we have ever come to know [Music] like I said in the video my goal today is to equip you to understand Mormonism and really to be able to reach Mormons with the gospel so to do that we need to understand what Mormons believe we also have to understand what we believe so I'm going to kind of jump back and forth a little bit between what the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints teaches and what we believe is Christians and this is a little difficult because if I were to explain to you like Buddhism and Christianity the differences would be apparent off the bat but I'm explaining to you a religion that is that uses the same terms and terminology that Christians use so I have to explain to you Mormonism and I'm going to talk about Christianity and I'm going to separate the two so you understand the differences it took me nearly three years to turn away from the Mormon Church to Christianity so don't think that you're going to convert a Mormon overnight it's actually not your job to convert a Mormon that's a God's job so if you put that burden on yourself it's going to crush you this is the Mormon scriptures this is actually a quad so it holds the entire canon of the Mormon Church if we were using a Christian terminology so it starts with the Holy Bible which is our Protestant Canon in the King James language so it's the King James Version of the Holy Bible and then it has the Book of Mormon which you've probably heard about and then the doctrine of covenants which is basically scriptures about revelations - Mormon prophets and then the pearl of great price which is mostly writings of Joseph Smith this squad was actually my dad's who was a high councilman in the Mormon Church so I want to let you understand throughout this entire teaching that all these things that I'm bringing out and I'm showing and expounding on or things that I believed and things that I actually lived so I only bring that up to tell you that I was a devout Mormon I believe those things closely and they were dear to my heart and now that I've turned fully away from that to the gospel of Jesus Christ the true gospel of the true God I get to teach you the differences so what is Mormonism Mormonism is a heretical cult started by Joseph Smith and a few others in the early 1800s it has since grown worldwide to tout millions of members it is a false gospel that promotes a legalistic understanding of the Bible and has fundamental differences with Christianity since many Mormons believe in different things I'm only going to discuss the things that Mormons believe today and that are mainstream teachings in the Mormon Church this includes a priesthood saving ordinances baptism for the dead and the Mormon view of the afterlife so I care about Mormons in this cult my answer is it would be the greatest disservice to let a Mormon believe in a different gospel without ever hearing the true gospel of God's grace so let's explore the claims of Mormonism and contrast that with the gospel I think it's important to start at the beginning of any story so let me give you a brief overview of the history of Mormonism and the basic claims of Joseph Smith so it all started in Palmyra New York Joseph was searching the different Protestant denominations this include Lutheran's Methodists Baptists and he was trying to figure out which of these churches he should join and they all had conflicting teachings like some wanted to baptize babies some thought you couldn't baptize babies some wanted to give communion to children some thought you could only get communion if you were older so all of these things Joseph said were a problem for him he thought they all should agree so he went into the woods to pray to God to ask which Protestant denomination was the true church he claims then he was bound by Satan couldn't speak cried out to God for deliverance Satan left and then he saw a light descending from heaven this light held two personages one calling Joseph by name and pointing the other saying this is my beloved son hear him this is recording Jeff Smith history chapter 1 verse 17 in the pearl of great price Joseph asks the - which church to join one person has answered that all the churches were wrong their creeds were an abomination and their professors were all corrupt the quotation from that personage that answered is they draw near to me with their lips but their hearts are far from me this is the account of what is referred to as the first vision and it is included in just Smith history which is included in the pearl of great price in the Worman scriptures Joseph would later be visited by an angel named Moroni he will tell Joseph where some golden plates were buried and how to translate them into English this is how the Book of Mormon would be translated layered be printed the followers of Joseph's then began to move out west as their surrounding community rejected them as they did Mormon theology began to really take form Joseph's followers started to see him as a prophet they started to believe that he had revelation from God straight from God so that continued from the first vision on through the rest of Joseph's life so we're going to talk about Mormon theology now and again Mormon theology isn't easy to pin down Mormons believe in different things just like Christians believe in different things but what also makes this difficult as Mormons believe in something called personal revelation and also modern-day revelation that means that they can based off feelings after prayer and also based off of what their leaders and what the current Mormon prophet says they can take that as direct spoken word from God so this would be on the level of Moses on the Mount of Sinai hearing the voice of God in the burning bush they take it as just as authoritative so we're again we're only going to interact with what mainstream Mormonism teaches so now we're gonna talk about God and we're gonna start by talking about the God and the God has shown himself in the form of the Trinity and this is how we differ with Mormons so quickly God has one being shared in three persons Father Son and spirit the Father is omniscient we don't see that he has a physical body he is omnipresent he is all-knowing Jesus is truly God and he was manifested as a human being who came down to the earth and gave us the full revelation and we see the Spirit works in our lives and moves in us there's only one person in the Trinity that has a glorified body and that is our Lord Jesus Christ who was the Word made flesh the moment of you rejects the Trinity and holds to something called the Godhead the Mormon Godhead has the same persons as a Trinity Father Son and spirit but these persons do not share the same being the nature of the person's of the Mormon Godhead are also different God the Father has a body of flesh and bone and the son also has a body of flesh and bone the spirit in the Mormon Godhead is the only part of the Godhead that does not have a physical body Mormons also believed that Jesus was created by the father he was the father's first creation the Spirit is less divine but is given to Mormon converts after they are baptized by a Mormon priesthood holder unless this happens the spirit cannot end well you so this brings us to our next topic that we're going to talk about which is the Mormon priesthood so what does the Mormon priesthood Mormons believe that God the Father gives his people power in the form of priesthood they claim two major types the ironic and Melchizedek Priesthood and if you read the Old Testament that's where they get the names from Aaron and Melchizedek both of these priesthoods were given to the 12 apostles in the time of Jesus but after the 12 apostles were all killed after Jesus's ascension this power was lost and this is why or this is what the Mormons would call the great apostasy and that is the power of God being removed from the earth they believe that some form of knowledge and truth remained and that's what we see in modern day Christianity that's why there are so many similarities but they that we Christians don't have the true truth or the full truth this is why Joseph Smith was told in the first vision that none of the Protestant churches were true and that they were all abominations and they were corrupt and their Creed's were wrong they also believed that the Bible is true as long as it was translated correctly that's a common phrase you'll hear a latter-day Saint say so they will subordinate the Bible Old Testament New Testament under the Book of Mormon doctrine of covenants the pro' of great price and also what the modern-day Mormon prophet has the power to speak so now we're gonna talk about some of the saving ordinances that Mormons believe needs to be done for you to have what we would refer to as salvation but they would refer to as eternal life and there's actually a difference but I'm not going to go into that because that's going to be a rabbit trail so why does the Mormon need to be baptized with a special power of God that we just discussed called the priesthood in Mormonism the act of baptism cleanses you from sin you must be baptized before you can be forgiven by God the Father this is why directly after baptism you are conferred with the Holy Spirit remember that you are given the Holy Ghost or spirit by a priesthood holder this is done at age 8 for those raised in Mormonism or once converts to Mormonism have stopped committing certain sins these sins would include sexual immorality so a Mormon missionaries typically wouldn't baptize somebody who was living with her girlfriend or engaging in any type of sexual immorality without having a period of stopping it would also require them to obey something called the word of wisdom which you have probably heard about which is why Mormons don't drink coffee they don't drink alcohol they don't chew or smoke tobacco they also don't drink green tea or black tea so after you are baptized and given the Holy Spirit by Mormon priesthood holder you also have to attend weekly sacrament meeting and take the sacrament now this is kind of like our communion except it is considered a continual cleansing so Mormonism if you sin if you make a mistake you have to stop that action you have to pray for forgiveness and then you take the sacrament and you feel forgiven by God and that is the completion of the repentance process for most sins most smaller sins in Mormonism there and if I am speaking about like smaller sins bigger sins and that's confusing to you as a Christian it's because in Mormonism since it is more works based and it's more what I do certain things carry a lot more weight than others so in the Christian view we see a any sin is falling short of the glory of God we all have fallen short but Mormonism you have to work pass your sin you have to continually repent so a small sin is easier to get over a larger sin might require you to step back from certain aspects of Mormon life I'm not going to get that I'm not going to go too far with that because again that's going to take us into a conversation that will take us off course so you have to do all of these things if you're also male you have to be given the Aaronic and then Melchizedek Priesthood and both male and female need to be married in the temple to be sealed for time and all eternity this allows you something called exaltation so what in the world is exaltation I'm glad you asked because that's going to be our next topic so let's look at this diagram that you can see we're not going to talk about the pre-existence as you can see in that first circle or the premortal life we're going to jump directly to earth life because again I can get into some topics that's going to take too long and we aren't going to learn as much as we can in the time we have together so there are five this is where Mormons will evangelize and live out their faith when someone dies and you can see that arrow is death they go to the spirit world so that third circle I want you to split that in half and think of the top half as paradise and the bottom half as spirit prison because you're going to go to one of two places when you die if you're a Mormon you're going to go up to paradise if you're not a Mormon you're going to go down to spirit prison Mormons believe that this isn't it though because Mormons will be able to go from paradise into spirit prison and preach the gospel if the spirits in spirit prison except the Mormon gospel they have a chance to go up to paradise in the spirit world but they have to wait for one thing they have to have a proxy who is still living on earth back in the second circle who hasn't died who still has a physical body be baptized in their place in a Mormon temple this is baptism for the dead not only do they have to be baptized but they also have to be conferred with the Holy Ghost because remember that has to be physically given to you Mormons don't believe the Holy Ghost can just fall on somebody and renew them so if a spirit who is not Mormon is in spirit prison they accept the Mormon gospel and then someone on earth does the temple ordinances they are allowed to go up into paradise now nobody has passed that line that you see of resurrection and judgment so once the resurrection happens we will all be judged now Mormons believe that you're going to go one of three places Mormons believe in truly three heavens and one hell I don't have the true Mormon hell on here because we're going to talk about that last and most people are going to go to one of these three places so the highest is the see less you'll Kingdom that's where you go if you have done all of the Mormon saving ordinances you've been married in the temple you've endure to the end this allows you exaltation and you have the next level that terrestrial Kingdom which is where people will go if they are pretty good like a Baptist is going to go here because they believed in Jesus Christ now you have the teal SGO kingdom which is the lower part now those people weren't so good in life it's like Matt Oberlander you know these guys are kind of shady to be fair though Mormons would believe that Matt would go to the second level because he does believe in Jesus so I talked about the three Mormon heavens but I haven't discussed hell yet well that's because a very special group gets to go to hell three people or three groups in fact Satan the demons and apostate Mormons so Mormons believe that if you die in open rebellion to the Mormon gospel after you have a full knowledge of the Holy Spirit you will go to something they call outer darkness and this is hell they are completely separated from all forms of God and they will remain there if you are an apostate Mormon you will actually rule over Satan and the demons because you still have a physical body Satan and the demons don't get resurrected or we have a slide of verses that Mormons will use to discuss their gospel with Christians and then a slide of verses that Christians will use to refute Mormonism and what that leads to is something called eisegesis and proof texting which is when somebody rips out a verse of the Bible they crumple it up and they toss it at the person they're arguing with and they rip another verse out of their Bible out of context crumple it up and they toss it out the person they're arguing with and these people talk over each other for about thirty minutes to three hours until they get too tired and no one learns anything no one goes further in their faith no one understands the opposing position this is not what we want to do and it happens all too often so what we're gonna do is we're gonna discuss some of the common verses that Mormons will use and we're going to exegete those verses we're going to read them in context we're going to camp in those verses because those verses are from the full revelation of God and they're Scripture so we shouldn't feel uncomfortable talking about those verses and we're going to read them in context we're gonna look at the original audience the original messenger the original environment and we're going to find out what those verses really mean are they talking about the Mormon gospel or are they talking about something completely different and that will allow us to have a conversation with somebody without jumping around to a million different places so let's start with the first verse we're going to talk about else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead first Corinthians chapter 15 verse 29 in the King James I'm using the King James because that's the version that Mormons are going to be comfortable using so I want you to hear the verses in King James language because that's very uncommon now for anyone to use that so Mormons will use this to say hey this is in the New Testament a proclamation a mention of baptism for the dead this is what we do today do you have anything in your theology that talks about baptism for the dead and if you really want to delve into this one dr. Heiser has a podcast that's like an hour long on this verse alone and it's great I listened the whole thing loved it so that's a really good resource if you want it and we're actually going to include some resources that are more teachings about this so basically what this verse is likely saying and there's a couple different takes on it but this is the one that I found to be the most likely is Paul here is talking about resurrection we got to read the verses before and the verses after because he's given us a message he's not just sending this one snippet information so he's talking about resurrection he's like why are you being baptized for the dead or in the ESV on behalf of the Dead if you're not raised at all if you're not resurrected why are you doing this practice so what does that practice that they're doing are they being baptized as a proxy for somebody else well what do we believe about baptism do we believe it's a proclamation of our faith to the world saying I'm following Christ that's what I believe about baptism it's not a necessarily a ritualistic cleansing it's not something that makes us any holier so what does it mean on behalf or for the dead well if I had somebody who was preaching the gospel and they were the reason I came to faith at least in worldly terms and they were martyred or they died of natural causes and I was baptized I would say I'm doing it on behalf of this man who preached the Word of God to me and that's a way of showing honor to the person who helped you come to faith now he's not the one giving growth but he might have been the one planning and watering so that's likely what this verse is talking about nowhere else in the Bible is there anything about being a proxy for another human being so let's talk about the next verse and Jesus when he was baptized went up straightway out of the water and lo and behold the heavens were opened unto him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him and lo and behold a voice from heaven saying this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased this is in Matthew chapter 3 verse 16 and 17 so this one's hard because a Mormon is going to have preconceived notions about God and we're going to have what we believe about God and they're going to come to a head in this chapter because the Mormons going to read this first and say the father is up in heaven Jesus is down in earth his spirits descending like a dove like they're two separate people and what that means is the Mormon doesn't really understand what we're saying about the Trinity now the Trinity doesn't see a conflict with Jesus being baptized and Yahweh descending or his spirit descending like a dove because we believe that God has three persons and one being so there's no contradiction for the Christiaan even though this verse is commonly used by Mormons to show a contradiction in the Trinity so let's talk about the next verse and it's in James 2 or chapter 2 verse 20 but we'll about know a vain man that faith without works is dead so this one this one's tough when you come out of Mormonism because even when you come out you have this immense burden on yourself to be perfect to always do the right thing because you have to really work hard to stay in God's good grace and if we read it out of context it really kind of sounds like well faith doesn't really matter all that much it's really just what I do because faith without works is dead but what this verse is really talking about we have to think about what James is saying in contrast with what Paul is saying in Romans because we know if there's an apparent contradiction there's really not they're just in tension with each other and they're trying to describe a greater truth so faith without works is dead in tension with we are justified by faith alone what that really means is that if we have true faith it's going to change our lives we're gonna see evidence in how we live how we follow Christ that is going to be much different than if we didn't have that faith a faith is not an empty prayer and AK and I believe in Jesus it is a heartfelt turning from sin and following God that doesn't mean that if we missed up that if we slip up we're all the sudden out of the club that's not the God that I believe in and that's not the God that Christians proclaim so when we read the entirety new verses behind this verse we understand that James is addressing people who are taking a hyper view on grace saying well we can do whatever we want now because we have this thing called grace and he's saying no if it's not changing your life you don't really have faith if you got questions the Bible has answers so I'm gonna bring up Matt Oberlander we're gonna do a quick QA step dude well first of all I just want to thank you for your teaching super helpful you as an individual are a great resource to the difference-makers team to the greater body at heart of the city and I just think it's absolutely valuable for us to like recognize that God has saved each of us uniquely but he has saved all of us from a fallen nature and I'm no better than you I wasn't a practicing Mormon but God definitely saved me out of a life that was dishonored to him to his will so yeah man super thankful for your testimony and for your story for those of us that have not met you I've got a question here this one comes in the form of something that I think will just give us some more insight into your testimony it says well what was your personal journey like coming out of Mormonism and into Christianity so I hit on a little bit it was real slow so it took me really three years to fully turn away from the teachings of the Mormon Church to a Christian view of God he got so it was it was a slow slow process until I devoted my life to Christ when I was 19 and I remember walking down the hallway of Skyline High School in the athletic hallway because I was running cross-country and I thought to myself I was like well I don't know if all that Joseph Smith stuff is true and just going if I can completely divorce my mind from everything Mormon that I know and just think about God and Christ and the spirit and I wasn't even to the point where I was really thinking about the Trinity I was like I know Jesus is true and so I don't know if that really explains kind of like the slow walk because I think sometimes when I was actually Mormon I was probably a little more Christian than I ever thought I think that's good yeah I mean it would be unfair if I just do a quick audit of my past you know it's like how crazy would I be to believe that in spite of what I know that God changed me in a moment's time fryin justification taking place instantaneously in my life it would be ridiculous for me to think that all of the baggage that I was dragging along with me at that point when he changed me automatically fall just falls off doesn't work like that no yeah I mean there are still times today in my life where God is confronting me with issues of sin that need to change and I love how patient and how graceful he is with me and I just want to mirror that in my conversations and I interact with other people regardless of what they believe right because I can't go to a Mormon and be like you're going to hell because you believe in all this because well without having a bunch of fingers point back at me I am very and I count myself very fortunate that I didn't do what a lot of ex Mormons do and just ignore completely God religion any type of spirituality and that happens especially with people who are hurt by a religion is they push away any type of thing that smells like it with both arms extended so that takes us to our next question actually what was life like for you with your family where you did you find yourself like being treated differently by them did it put a large gap between you and them like if so how did you close the distance like yeah what was that like well funnily enough I was probably one of the last members of my immediate family to fully leave Mormonism so no one in my immediate family or very few in my extended family are still Mormon not to tell their story but most of them have what I described in that allergy to anything that smells or feels religious or organized religion in general and that runs the gamut from having something what we would call theism or a complete atheist so I didn't get any heat from my family when I said I'm a Christian because they were you know they've always been super accepting and they were just happy that you know and to get that response with a lot of people who don't have that faith like I'm glad you believe in something and I see it has meaning to you so they usually just accept it for that now for people I knew in Mormonism before I don't really have any communication with them I remember when I was still living in Virginia in the area I would get a little bit of the sideways looks from people I knew in my ward which was like the local church and there was a couple times I mean they looked at me like I had three heads so I've I've experienced complete acceptance and I have experienced people and it was not so much of like a hatred it was almost like a fear if they were scared of me because they you get conditioned like don't read Mormon let earth anti-mormon literature don't look outside these approved sources don't talk to apostate Mormons they're gonna try to rip you away from the church or gonna tell you all these lies so a lot of Mormons are conditioned to be like hey that's dangerous stay away from it so I guess it's safe to say then that you're in contact with your family today you guys are sharing you know love grace patience hey little one another cool they're supportive me doing this too yeah yeah I was blessed to beat your wedding so I had the opportunity to meet your mom and I had the opportunity to meet your sister but for those you know who don't know you who don't get to live life alongside of you I just wanted to ask questions that would open up you know the door for you to give those kinds of answers I've got a couple of other questions here that came in I love how you have talked with me in the past about how it's not about getting our theological swords of blood and I stole that quote from dr. James White okay so excellent resources yeah yeah yeah what I mean just him and his friendship with dr. Michael Brown is a gift to the Evangelical Church today where you can find yourselves in - pretty opposing camps theologically and yet you can find enough neutral or common ground in the non-negotiables to stand and fight for truth right now and that's what this church is all about amen yeah so so what Bible verses really started to challenge your own personal Mormon beliefs and maybe what else contributed to you really bring in a deep questioning to your Mormon faith so honestly it wasn't it wasn't necessarily Bible verses that were very challenging one does come to mind and that's the verse where Jesus is talking about someone comes to him with a question about divorce and they're like whoa this woman's married to seven different men and after the resurrection who asked her as a wife and Jesus goes well knowing and the afterlife is given or taken in marriage you know you guys are hypocrites you're missing the whole point and so that one kind of really throws a lot of cold water on the Mormon belief of being sealed for time and all eternity the Mormon temple especially for those who are deceased and have approximated that for them but I came to faith in a Pentecostal church of God in which Chester Virginia and pastor Waller was like I remember listening to him because I was just visiting the church as a kind of nut not so active Mormon going oh I believe that 90% of what's coming out of that man's mouth is true and then there just got to a point where I was like I'm just gonna I want to follow this and see where it happens and that kind of led me down to the road there down the road of challenging what I believe with evidence and then looking at the Bible as you know and looking at topics from like history and archaeology to like textual critisism and that's when I really started having like a solid foundation in you know the Bible and Mormonism doesn't come close to having any of that with the Book of Mormon or any of their writings cool so just one or two more and then we'll close it out here is it okay to invite a Mormon into your house totally not going to bite you just don't offer him a cup of coffee cuz they'll say no that's right but uh don't be afraid to love somebody I mean if we look at what Jesus was doing during his ministry he wasn't he wasn't scared of the religious elite a process to the tax collector like he pretty much you know I think sometimes we like focus on the people who are downtrodden that Jesus talked to but you really just talked to everybody yeah so if you're saying everybody Mormons are everybody so in vitamin have a conversation and then we'll just uh we'll close it out with can you give us some examples of Bible verses that might open up a dialogue with and I want to add a caveat not just with Mormons but with people who are just of other faiths in general um what and if if not passage of the scripture like what what is it that you find yourself being most successful with when it comes to evangelize encoder it'd be like the guys that you're serving alongside of in your in your cab unit or when you're at the store or when you're here at church and you meet somebody new like what what's most effective for you I think what's most effective is explaining like you you can have an honest true faith you know and you have to really show that you can't necessarily just like tell somebody I have this awesome thing you have to live it but as far as versus what comes to mind as I just read a lot of Romans and the cool thing about romans in paul's letter is you have okay man is not good enough man is sinful man needs help then we have this gift of grace that we have through faith and it's not anything we have to do you know we're basically just hitching our load to God and he's doing all of the work we're just trying to reach we're just grabbing on so to explain that to somebody who is in a even a Christian tradition that's very like legalistic or works based is super free so that's that's one thing that I think it's really important to explain to somebody what grace really is and what that really means and that's very inviting when you have somebody okay I cannot be a slave to sin and I can be a slave to righteousness and I can be adopted in the spirit of adoption and call God Abba Father that's very important yeah well thanks man we appreciate you we appreciate the wisdom that God has given you check it out difference-makers we meet every third Wednesday of the month at heart of the city in the main sanctuary from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock at night
