we finally have every character in super smash brothers ultimate which means we finally have every final smash in the game as well so let's dive into every final smash and look at their origins mario's final smash is the mario finale and has been his final smash since brawl while the design of this is largely smash original the design bears a resemblance to the ultra flame from the super nintendo game super mario rpg legend of the 7 stars in that game mario sends a barrage of fireballs that attacks all of the enemies that are on screen at the time being a very old 2d game versus a more modern 3d game smash definitely takes its liberties with the design of this move if this move from super mario rpg is not the reference then it simply is based on mario's constant use of fireballs throughout his entire history and is just supposed to be that ability ramped up to a hundred donkey kong's final smash is jungle rush donkey kong swings an initial punch to start the final smash then attacks with a flurry of punches to finish this is based on the same move from several of donkey kong's games originating first in donkey kong jungle beat but donkey kong is another fighter who has a reworked final smash and ultimate in brawl and smash 4 donkey kong had the conga beat for a final smash the origin comes from the donkey kong series where bongos were used as the physical controller for the game and the actual moves execution is based on the gameplay from those games in smash ultimate link's final smash is the ancient bow and arrow this comes from the legend of zelda breath of the wild with equipment of the same name ancient arrows can defeat every enemy in the game with a single blow precisely as the move functions in smash and the ancient bow and arrow are both pieces of equipment that link can obtain during his journey however in previous iterations link's final smash was the triforce this was a relatively original final smash encasing the enemy inside of the triforce while link deals massive damage with the master sword the final few hits of the move can possibly be linked to the final blow that linked deals to gannon in ocarina of time samus has never had a changed final smash retaining the one that she received all the way back in brawl even to this day her final smash is the zero laser where she shoots out a massive laser from her arm cannon while several moves throughout the metroid history could be the inspiration for this move such as the hyper mode state or the hyper beam none of these connections are very solid meaning that this largely could be a smash original in brawl this final smash also causes samus to turn into zero suit samus however in smash 4 and ultimate she stays in her power suit following ultimate's redesign of final smashes yoshi receives a new one called stampede which is entirely original to smash when the final smash is used yoshi launches forward and headbutts the opponent this then switches to a cut scene showing the opponent getting trampled by a lion king-esque stampede of differently colored yoshis many will recognize this from the same stampede that plays in the opening movie for super smash brothers melee and while this is the reference for the final smash the cutscene itself is unique to smash but in brawl and smash 4 yoshi had a final smash called super dragon this not only gave yoshi wings but also the ability to either breathe fire or launch large fireballs this was a player controlled final smash allowing yoshi to fly around the map based on the player's input this final smash is sort of an amalgamation of yoshi's different abilities from super mario world the name of the final smash is also based on some text in the japanese game where a sign describes yoshi as super dragon yoshi kirby is yet another fighter who has had multiple final smashes although unlike the others he received his new one in smash 4 not smash ultimate this is the ultra sword a super ability that debuted and kirby's return to dreamland for the nintendo wii in that game kirby would use this ability to swipe at enemies and terrain with a huge range and a variety of weapons in smash kirby swings just the ultra sword which traps the opponent and slashes at them several times before dealing a finishing hit brawl had kirby utilizing a totally different final smash cook kirby as the name implies kirby would cook up the opponents in a big ol pot before blasting them away the pot would also leave behind a few items this move is based on the cook ability kirby would gain from kirby superstar and kirby in the amazing mirror with almost an identical function in that game smash ultimate players will notice that this final smash has been repurposed as an assist trophy in chef kawasaki which is the enemy kirby typically receives the cook ability from in his home series fox's final smash is an all-out attack with team star fox the r-wings sweep on stage to hit the opponent and if successful activate a cutscene which attacks all players hit naturally this comes from the typical gameplay from the star fox series brawl in smash 4 saw fox utilizing his land master as a player controlled final smash which could shoot giant lasers do a barrel roll and fly pikachu's final smash in all games is volt tackle however with the reworks given to final smashes in ultimate the move has been changed functionally pikachu charges forward and if contact is made with an opponent begins rapidly dashing around the screen typically trapping opponents before bursting with one final electric blow in brawl and smash 4 this move is instead controllable pikachu becomes encased in a ball of electricity and the player can move around the field attacking with small or large bursts of electricity volt tackle is the pikachu evolutionary lines signature move and they're the only pokemon that can learn this move in the first place it can only be learned through breeding in a very specific way or from very special move tutors throughout the games although several pikachu have been released as event pokemon that come with volt tackle luigi uses his poltergust g00 as his final smash sucking up opponents from a considerable distance across the stage before popping them out of the poltergust towards the blast zone his poltergust and smash ultimate is actually the first look at his new poltergust that will be used in the upcoming luigi's mansion 3. it was teased in the cinematic that revealed simon and richter and it was officially confirmed as his final smash and his grab later on in smash 4 the final smash is functionally the same however luigi uses the poltergust 5000 instead which is his upgraded vacuum that he uses in luigi's mansion darkmoon brawl had the incredibly trippy and unique final smash the negative zone which was completely original to smash it's been said that this is the feeling of being overshadowed by mario that luigi has felt across the years embodied into one all-out attack anyone inside of the negative zone can be impacted by random effects such as increased likelihood of tripping uncontrollable taunting falling asleep being slowed down or being stunned as if their shield had been broken and that's just to name a few since the debut of final smashes ness's final smash has been pk star storm in brawl ness would shout pk starstorm and the screen would suddenly be attacked by meteorites falling from above at random in smash 4 this move was made more controllable having a much smaller range but also being able to direct the trajectory with ease in smash ultimate the brawl and smash 4 versions are sort of combined while the meteors are more on the random side they can also be guided so that you can prefer the left side or the right side of the stage for example additionally ness is joined this time around by paula and pooh which is a new detail added to ultimate ironically while ness has always used pk starstorm as his final smash it's not actually a move that he himself can learn in his home game in earthbound pooh is the party member who can use pk starstorm the trophy for ness's final smash in brawl states that pooh taught this to nest specifically for use in smash while ultimate corrects this by simply having pooh present during the animation captain falcon's final smash has stayed the same for every single smash title since brawl he summons the blue falcon which drives through enemies and if hit a cutscene will activate with captain falcon driving even faster to hit them with his car wow this is actually a really violent move when you really think about it even for a fighting game like smash i mean captain falcon literally can be running over children with his car all that aside this is a simple reference to captain falcon's home series f-zero and the high-speed racing that takes place in it jigglypuff's final smash has long been one of the most odd final smashes in the entire franchise it's called puff up and quite simply jigglypuff grows to be a massive size and basically tries to shove opponents off stage or into hazards this really doesn't have any kind of a reference outside of jigglypuff being the balloon pokemon and having the tendency to puff up hence the name but never has jigglypuff grown to be this size outside of smash and it's just one of those weird creative liberties that smash has taken peach's final smash is peach blossom and has been the same since brawl when activated the camera will zoom in on peach with peach drawings and hearts taking up much of the screen peach will dance and the tune will play causing all grounded players to fall asleep for a very lengthy amount of time large peaches will also appear all over the stage and will heal the player when eaten this final smash is completely original to super smash brothers being a pun on peach's name rather than being any real reference however peach does have similar abilities that don't have much of a connection to smash in super mario rpg peach has the ability sleepy time which can put clusters of enemies to sleep the peach drawings that appear along the sides can be based on art from super princess peach however the art itself is made specifically for smash there's also a reference in the music that plays during the final smash by slowing down the music it reveals that the song is actually a sped up version of the sky and coin heaven level themes as well as the warp zone theme all from super mario bros 3. [Music] bowser's final smash turns him into this godzilla looking son of a gun giga bowser in brawl and smash 4 this was a controllable final smash which basically amped all of bowser's abilities up while making him gigantic many attacks gain elemental effects and highly increase knockback and damage gigabowser actually predates the advent of final smashes as gigabowser was the hidden boss of melee's adventure mode the player can only fight him if they beat adventure mode on normal difficulty or higher in less than 18 minutes and without using any continues gigabowser was also present in the final event of melee's event mode gigabowser as a character is entirely smash original having never appeared in a game prior to melee the concept of a giant bowser however is recurring in the mario series however in these main games bowser doesn't really change design he simply grows gigantic in smash ultimate bowser still transforms into giga bowser for his final smash however rather than being controllable the final smash is now known as giga bowser punch giga bowser appears behind the stage much larger than he was in melee brawl and smash 4 and a reticle appears allowing the player to aim a punch at their opponents if the player is at or above 60 with the smash ball version it results in an instant screen ko bowser appearing in the background is similar to yoshi's island and the actual punch is similar to attacks used by bowser in both super mario galaxy 2 and new super mario bros 2. the ice climber's final smash is iceberg this is completely original to smash mostly being inspired by the aesthetic of the ice climbers being mountaineers in brawl this final smash brings a gigantic iceberg into the middle of the stage making all platforms slippery and causing ice damage to opponents as well as a chance of freezing them the opponents can attack the iceberg and cause it to shrink in size this final smash returns with the ice climbers in smash ultimate after the absence of the climbers from 3ds and wii u it has several notable changes in this version first the iceberg now spins rather than being stationary and one of the polar bears can be seen chilling on it get it chilling the player can also move the iceberg left and right and to avoid falling off the stage while inputting this control the player can grab onto a condor at the top of the screen which is again from ice climber the condor will hold on to the climbers until the final smash is complete sheik received a brand new final smash and ultimate known as the shika dance to initiate the final smash chic dashes forward and slashes the opponent with her dagger marking the first time this dagger has actually ever been used in smash despite being a part of her design since brawl sheik then uses a variety of slashes jabs kicks and punches to overwhelm the opponent before delivering a final attack to launch them this move doesn't really have any hard origin to point at other than the ninja-like movement that the shika are known for as well as the shika eye which is the emblem of the shika appearing in the background brawl in smash 4 featured the light arrow as sheik's final smash this was a pretty basic final smash simply shooting an arrow straight across a large distance on the stage and striking anyone in line regardless of terrain the light arrows are a recurring weapon used in the zelda series usually used to defeat ganon or ganondorf zelda who is sheik's true identity frequently gives these to link or uses them herself to help lock away the evil and speaking of zelda her final smash is also the light arrows in both brawl and smash 4. in brawl this at least makes sense because she can transform back and forth between zelda and sheik so it makes sense that they have the final smash but in smash 4 despite being a totally separate character now she still has the light arrows but ultimate of course has given her a brand new final smash which is the triforce of wisdom zelda summons the triforce piece to suck her opponents in dealing massive damage before being launched away if the opponent is at 100 or higher at the end of the move however they will instead be instantly ko'd rather than being sent flying this final smash comes from zelda always being the holder of the triforce of wisdom which is one of three pieces that complete the full triforce the other two are the triforce of courage which link wields and the triforce of power which ganondorf possesses however the actual usage of the move is original to smash dr mario unfortunately doesn't get anything too original for his final smash in both smash 4 and ultimate his final smash is the doctor finale this is simply a reskin of mario's final smash the mario finale but instead uses mega vitamins instead of fireballs i guess it makes sense that the character that is literally just mario in different clothes gets a final smash that is also just a reskin like his older brother or his future self or his dad i'm not entirely sure like pikachu pichu's first ever final smash is volt tackle which functions precisely the same as pikachu's though slightly stronger and with the added effect of slightly damaging pichu and just like pikachu this move is based on the move of the same name from the main series pokemon games which is exclusive to the pikachu line and can only be learned through breeding events or special move tutors like his buddy fox falco had the landmaster as his final smash in brawl and smash 4. this was literally the same as fox's controllable the exact same way and with the exact same laser spin and flying abilities smash ultimate effectively gives falco the same final smash as fox again but it at least has a semi-unique cutscene to match falco's style while fox's attack formation was more tight and organized falco's is pretty aggressive and more erratic the arwings then blast the opponent with lasers and the opponent gets sent flying just like fox the origin of this is simply based on the gameplay from the star fox series next let's talk about the hero prince himself marth marth's final smash is critical hit which is a staple in the fire emblem series in that series a critical hit will deal triple damage to a target which is usually more than enough to kill them mark's final smash reflects this being a contender for one of the strongest final smashes in the game marth launches forward and if the move connects deals massive damage while launching them away martha's animation during this is loosely based on his own critical hit animation but in fire emblem he doesn't lodge forward like he doesn't smash when the move connects a health bar also appears which is based on various fire emblem games as an easter egg for their hp dropping to zero in brawl this health bar matches the style of fire emblem mystery of the emblem while in smash 4 and ultimate they are based on fire emblem awakening the amount of hp in the gauge is also a reference in brawl the amount of hp in the gauge is 52 which is the maximum base hp that a unit can have in mystery of the emblem in smash 4 and ultimate the gauges have 80 hp which is the maximum base hp available in awakening young link returns an ultimate after missing out on two games and receives his first ever final smash being a clone his final smash is simply a copy and paste of link's old final smash the triforce slash just like with link this is smash original and only vaguely references link's association with the triforce as well as his final attack on ganon in ocarina of time and speaking of ganon ganondorf's final smash is beast gannon the monstrous form ganondorf takes on throughout the zelda series in brawl and smash 4 beast ganon took the appearance that he has in twilight princess to match ganondorf's design however in ultimate the return of his ocarina of time design means that beast gannon was designed to match and the final smash receives a new name ganon the demon king this is a title that he has throughout the zelda series specifically in ocarina of time functionally however ganondorf's final smash is exactly the same regardless of design ganon will either stomp or swing his swords and any opponents caught by the move will be buried or paralyzed ganon then rushes forward and off screen launching any opponents hit by his body mewtwo's final smash in both smash 4 and ultimate is seistrike mewtwo mega evolves into mega mew 2y and launches out size strike anyone hit by this move is paralyzed dealt 30 in damage and huge knockback megamew2y is one of noob 2's two possible mega evolutions available by giving mewtwo a mutant y to hold this evolution was first introduced in pokemon x and y and was exclusive to pokemon y without trading the item over while the mewtwo in smash is based on the mewtwo found in pokemon the first movie this mewtwo has never been known to mega evolve meanwhile the actual move systrike is a move first introduced in generation 5 and can be learned by mewtwo at level 100. this move calculates damage based on the target's defense stat but naturally this is not carried over into smash just like marth roy's final smash is also critical hit it's also based on critical hits and fire emblem and functionally is almost entirely the same however instead of dashing forward like marth roy stays still and performs an animation which is based on his critical hit animation from fire emblem the binding blade the health bar also appears after a successful hit of his final smash and also comes from the design of fire emblem awakening and lastly mr gaiman watch's final smash is probably someone's weird creepy fetish and he turns into an octopus in brawl and smash 4 this final smash was controllable but needed to rain and so the controlling player could actually self-destruct if they weren't careful the tentacles and body can cause damage with some of the tentacles capable of extending for more reach in ultimate this is now a more cinematic final smash the octopus charges the direction that mr gaiman watch is facing upon activation this can then go through pretty much anything from hazards to the actual stage itself the tentacles also grab onto opponents and drag them along off-screen for the ko or will let go of them if they bump into parts of the stage this final smash is a reference to one of the mr game watch games very appropriately named octopus in that game the player controlled deep sea divers who were headed down to a sunken ship to retrieve treasure the ship itself was protected by a giant octopus which is what game watch transforms into in his final smash the octopus would extend his tentacles and if the player was hit by them they would get basically eaten by the octopus meta knight was the first character added to super smash brothers brawl's roster and is both a rival and ally to kirby in brawl in smash for 3ds and wii u meta knight's final smash is galaxia darkness in this final smash he swings his dimensional cape and any character caught in this is trapped for a few seconds while the screen fades to black then they are hit by a single powerful strike from meta knight sword and their sent flying the name galaxia is the name of meta knight sword interestingly this name was actually not given to the sword until the anime kirby right back at you while the anime is not generally considered to be canon the name for the sword from the anime was adopted into the main games later on however when brawl came out the sword was not named in the official games yet and so this was actually the first time the sword has been referred to as galaxia it wasn't until kirby's epic yarn that the sword was officially named in a kirby game the actual move however is fairly generic and it doesn't really represent anything outside of meta knight's reliance on his sword in smash ultimate his final smash is darkness illusion when meta knight activates this he grows a second pair of wings and draws in a lightning bolt which shocks all nearby players these players are then launched into the air and attacked from many angles before meta knight launches them away with a powerful slice the flurry of attacks can resemble upper caliber which is an attack meta knight has in kirby star allies though upper caliber doesn't utilize lightning to activate the move this lightning animation resembles several different animations that meta knight has had in more recent kirby games so these animations likely drew inspiration for the final smash pit is a pretty unique fighter as far as final smashes go as he's one of the few characters who has had a new final smash for every single iteration of smash since brawl in his debut game pit's final smash was to summon palutena's army a large image of palutena would appear in the background and centurions would appear to attack players on the stage the centurions played an important role in kid icarus for the nes throughout boss fortresses if pitt rescued any centurions that were trapped inside statues they would help in the fight against the fortress boss in smash for 3ds and wii u pitt no longer receives help from palutena as she's her own fighter in the game his final smash is the three sacred treasures as the name suggests pit equips the three sacred treasures the wings of pegasus the mirror shield and the arrow of light a barrage of arrows and different patterns and damage are then fired off as the actual move the three sacred treasures are said to be the strongest weapons in all of angel land these three weapons are stolen by space pirates and pit's goal in kid icarus uprising is to reclaim them the final phase of the final smash is reminiscent to the bose attack in uprising's flight stages pit's ultimate final smash is the lightning chariot as the name suggests he summons the lightning chariot and rides it into the background and then rams across the screen based on the player's reticle positioning functionally this final smash works pretty much exactly like the dragoon item the lightning chariot is used by pit in kid icarus uprising in order to allow him to pierce through a barrier he cannot get through on his own it is also later used by dark pit foss and lux are two unicorns who pulled the chariot in both uprising and in super smash brothers ultimate zero suit samus and brawl really had an underwhelming final smash samus final smash turned her into zero suit samus and so zero suits final smash turns her back into power suit samus however there wasn't really a creative way to do this instead zamas basically rotates and pulls in items and players these are all drastically shocked and sent flying while samus regains her suit somehow this move is similar to the animation for the crystal flash from super metroid which would allow samus to refill all of her energy tanks at the cost of some of her weapons in smash 4 she separated from samus to become her own character and she received a new final smash as a result this one is the gun ship in this final smash xero suit samus jumps into her gunship and goes into the foreground of the screen bringing with her a reticle the player aims this reticle and can fire several shots at enemies samus's gunship has been a staple of the metroid series since metroid 2 return of samus however it did not become a means of shooting and firing weapons until metroid prime 3 corruption however in that game it fires missiles instead of lasers in smash ultimate she has a sort of reworked final smash similar to the smash 4 one called zero laser in this one she jumps on the gun ship though this time she puts on her power suit and hovers in the background of the stage rather than the foreground again the player controls a reticle to aim a laser though this one only fires once but for a very prolonged amount of time this move actually just kind of functions as an altered version of normal samus's final smash even down to the name being the exact same thing the laser just gets fired from the top of the screen and it's angled side to side rather than being shot from the actual stage and being aimed up and down in brawl and smash 4 wario's final smash turns him into a controllable fighter wario man wario man basically acts as a highly upgraded wario using similar moves but far faster and more powerful being immune to different items and effects as well as being able to ko much earlier in ultimate while wario still turns into wario man this is a cinematic now barraging the opponent with attacks before blasting them away with the heart wario man is the alter ego of wario that exists in the warioware series in warioware twisted wario falls into a machine which turns him into wario man while in warioware touched he simply eats a rotten piece of garlic this second form is more accurate to the smash portrayal however none of the warioware games depict wario man as having superhuman strength as he doesn't smash this is more so based on the superhero trope that is commonly found in media snake's final smash in brawl is the grenade launcher snake jumps off screen and grabs onto a ladder hanging out of a helicopter in the foreground he uses a reticle to aim and fire grenades at the players who remain on stage while grenade launchers have been used many times in the metal gear solid series this particular move is likely taken from a similar event that happens in metal gear solid 2. meanwhile in smash ultimate his final smash is now known as covering fire functionally this is an incredibly weird final smash the player moves a crosshair around the stage potentially locking on to other players after a few seconds rockets will launch at the players that were targeted or they will simply launch at the last place that the reticle was at in metal gear solid 5 the phantom pain venom snake has the diamond dogs develop a helicopter which can launch missiles at targets on the ground he also developed a flare which could summon the helicopter if needed both of these aspects are apparent in snake's final smash next up is ike ike's final smash in all three smash games is great ether ike swings his sword in front of him and knocks anyone who gets hit by it up into the air to be constantly bombarded with sword slashes before being spiked down to the ground and consequently launched upwards this move has never been specifically seen or named in the fire emblem series though elements are of course taken from throughout ike's games ike uses the power of yune the goddess at the end of radiant dawn which engulfs him in a blue flame this blue flame while missing from brawl which colored the fire red exists in both smash 4 and ultimate pokemon trainer's final smash in brawl and ultimate is triple finish in this move all three pokemon are sent out each doing their most powerful move squirtle performs hydro pump ivysaur uses solar beam and charizard uses fire blast in the earlier generations which this fighter is based off of these moves were all well known for being the strongest moves for each of their respective types a text box also appears on screen during the move resembling the style of fire red and leaf green or sun and moon in brawl this text reads take that triple finish and if it hits the opponent will change to it's super effective and ultimate it reads it's super effective no matter what smash for 3ds and wii u were of course unique making charizard the sole returning fighter from pokemon trainer's team in these games charizard's final smash was mega evolution turning him into mega charizard x this was a controllable final smash and was actually similar to yoshi's super dragon final smash it allowed charizard to fly around and do multiple attacks the first move was dragon rush which was a spin type rush down move and the second move was fire blast which would trap opponents in a flaming kanji symbol which is a staple for fire blast mega evolution was a recent addition to the pokemon series around the release of smash 4. charizard is one of two pokemon that has two mega evolutions the other being mewtwo who is also in smash fire blast and dragon rush are both moves that can be learned by charizard dragon rush is also available as one of charizard's custom moves for his side special diddy kong's final smash is relatively similar in all three games however of course ultimate has a bit of a tweak first in brawling smash 4 his final smash is rocket barrel barrage he gains temporary unlimited use of his jet pack and fires powerful shots out of his peanut pop gun this is a controllable final smash so the player has an influence as to where diddy can fly and fire the peanuts in ultimate while the actual transformation is very similar the function is quite different in this final smash called hyper rocket barrel diddy flies all around the stage on his jetpack bumping into opponents while it's pretty underwhelming at first the final stage of the final smash has did he lock on to a specific opponent and attack them specifically which is very damaging then diddy lands and his jetpack explodes just for that last chance at damage both of these final smashes come from donkey kong 64 where diddy can perform almost the exact same moves depending on his amount of crystal coconuts he can fly with his jet pack and shoot dual peanut pop guns while in the air this is also used in the final boss fight to defeat king k rool with diddy flying and shooting spotlights to make them fall on him lucas's final smash is the exact same as ness's pk starstorm on top of this all of the changes that were made to ness's final smash in each game applied to lucas's final smash as well and just like nets lucas does not actually learn pk starstorm in his own game in mother 3 kumatora is actually the party member who learns this move lucas's final smash trophy in brawl says that kumatora taught this to lucas for use in smash and this is presumably the case for smash 4 as well however in ultimate lucas is joined by kumatora in the final smash who he can assume is at least helping to use the moon additionally boney joins him who is another one of his party members for mother 3. in sonic's final smash he summons all of the chaos emeralds and transforms into super sonic in brawl in smash 4 this is a controllable final smash the player can fly around freely while knocking into other players in smash ultimate the behavior is similar although the player is not controlling the flying the player can only influence the height able to go higher or lower but the erratic flying is entirely automatic supersonic is a transformation which first debuted in sonic the hedgehog 2. in every game this transformation is only achievable if sonic collects all 7 chaos emeralds each game has a different way this is accomplished from special stages to story based collection the large boy king ddd is another character who has had three different final smashes across all of the smash games sakurai sure loves his baby or i guess himself since he voice acts ddd alright in brawl his final smash is the waddle d army which very appropriately spawns an army of waddle dees randomly while king ddd just sits back and dances typical king making his underlings do all the work the actual move is original to smash but it's loosely based on king dedede commanding the waddle dees in the kirby games moving to smash 4 his final smash is ddd burst in this move king ddd inhales far stronger than his standard move and traps opponents before slamming them with his hammer he then throws a bomb at them to send them flying this specific move is also unique to smash though again like the brawl final smash it uses elements that are common to king ddd and the kirby series as a whole and finally an ultimate is dd rush king dedede swings his hammer at the opponent who is then slammed up against a cage and hit with a huge flurry of missiles then ddd appears donning his mask to use his hammer to spin across the ring knocking them with one final hit through the cage yet again this final smash is original to smash and its usage though it takes elements from the games masked ddd is king ddd's upgraded form and kirby superstar ultra the caged ring in the cinematic is also similar to the arena that kirby fights mask ddd in additionally the super ddd hammer which mask ddd wields also launches missiles and has an engine which are both reflected in the final smash olimar has had the same final smash since brawl called end of day in this olimar climbs into his ship and flies into space while it becomes night time and all other players are attacked by bulborbs underneath the screen olomar then careens back to earth causing an explosion from his ship which sends the players flying the basis for this final smash can be seen in the name for the final smash in the pikmin series at the end of each day the player must return to space because night time is when all of the enemies come out and any pikmin that are left behind end up getting eaten this final smash emulates this though with the other players taking the place of the left behind pikmin goku i mean lucario's final smash and brawl is orastorm with the power of aura lucario launches up in the air and shoots a powerful beam downwards the player can angle the beam left or right and the players are trapped in it until a final hitbox launches them away this move doesn't really have an origin it's kind of vaguely similar to hyper beam or other beam based moves from pokemon but the name aura storm isn't actually anything with any bases from the pokemon series but after the introduction of mega evolutions in pokemon x and y lucario's final smash was accordingly changed to a mega evolution into mega lucaria this final smash kind of works like wario man it's controllable and the form lasts for a certain amount of time before downgrading back it also increases lucario's base damage and knockback smash ultimate sort of fuses these two previous final smashes together in fitting with the new design philosophy for final smashes while lucario still mega evolves into mega lucario he now once again performs the aura storm final smash that was present in brawl this final smash remains mostly the same although it has different voice lines and it has some updated animation as well rob has also had three different final smashes in brawl it was diffusion beam one of the weirder final smashes in the whole franchise rob basically has a constant stream of whirling lasers shooting out of his head dealing constant damage kind of like the super spicy curry item however rob is free to move around the entire stage using his normal moves on top of the final smash as well as just using items or even just taunting in smash 4 the diffusion beam got upgraded into the super diffusion beam this final smash launches out a large beam which then splits into four other beams that launch at different angles finally the attack ends in a large beam again sending any opponents caught in the move flying and then in ultimate rob has the guided robo beam with this final smash rob locks onto nearby opponents and fires several mini lasers at them this is then followed up by a big green laser that can be angled which then gets even bigger to deal the final blow like most of rob's move set all of these final smashes are pretty much smash original and they mostly serve as a souped-up overdrive version of the laser that is a part of his normal moveset toon link in all three smash games simply gets the copy and paste routine with triforce always being his final smash the function and origin here are pretty much exactly the same as brawl and smash 4 link as well as ultimate youngling link is largely associated with the triforce but as far as this move goes it's pretty much original to smash and rounding off the brawl veterans is wolf and unfortunately his final smashes are again sort of copy and paste in brawl his final smash was his own landmaster which is red rather than the blue variety that fox and falco have this final smash's trophy description states that wolfe analyzed fox's landmaster and built one for himself though with increased output and firepower this is used to explain why wolf's version of the final smash only lasts for 12 seconds as opposed to fox and falco's 18. however outside of some non-canon multiplayer appearances wolf has actually never used a landmaster himself making the whole final smash a smash original the copy and paste doesn't end with ultimate though this final smash at least has some more creativity the move functions exactly the same as fox and falco's does with a gang of arwings flying across the stage to hit an enemy a cutscene playing and then the enemy getting launched however for wolf this of course means that it's team star wolf that appears to blast the enemy instead of team stark fox however i will say that i much prefer the new star fox final smashes to the old land masters even if they are all kind of the same again in both smash 4 and ultimate villager's final smash is dream home if next to an enemy while activated tom nook and his nephews timmy and tommy will construct a house surrounding the opponent when the house is finished a little jingle plays and the nooks show off their handiwork to the players before it is completely blown up and the trap player is sent flying imagine going into all that debt specifically to see your enemies lives ended now that is truly baller the player's home is a core part of the animal crossing series throughout the series tom nook and his nephews can assist the player in building renovating and furnishing the home through their shops and services the house that the player builds in smash is based on the house after a room has been added to the west side in animal crossing new leaf the clothes that tom nook wears comes from his appearance in all games prior to animal crossing new leaf while timmy and tommy's design is based on their uniform also in new leaf and finally the jingle that plays is the same jingle that plays in new leaf when the player pays off their home loan mega man's final smash is mega legends this is the same in both smash titles that mega man has appeared in though ultimate has a couple of additions mega man shoots a black hole bomb to trap opponents and if successful a cinematic plays mega man then summons different mega men from across the franchise to aid him in delivering a powerful blast to all opponents from left to right these characters are megaman.exe from the mega man battle network series x from the mega man x series star force mega man from mega man star force and mega man vulnut for mega man legends the black hole bomb that mega man uses comes from mega man 9 which is received from galaxy man after his defeat in ultimate the final smash is basically the same however two further characters join the mega man first is protoman who first debuted in mega man 3. protoman is mega man's older brother of sorts and he is occasionally a playable character the other addition is bass a robot master created by dr wily to serve as mega man's arch nemesis who was introduced in mega man 7. he and his partner treble become more of an anti-hero and occasionally work together with mega man wii fit trainer's final smash is literally just called we fit in this she assumes the tree position and launches out a whole barrage of different yoga and exercise poses that all deal damage newt to ultimate the move now ends with a giant pose that moves slowly to deal one final hit this final smash is pretty original although the poses that are sent out are based on the poses that are found on the box art for wii fit rosalina's final smash is power star in smash 4 which is renamed to grand star in smash ultimate the move is basically pretty identical just with some minor tweaking between the two the star in each respective game is summoned and grows in size gradually this star is also launching smaller stars which knock the player around the star will then explode potentially ko'ing the opponents that are trapped the power star is a recurring item throughout the mario series these are the stars typically recovered in 3d mario platformers such as super mario 64 and the super mario galaxy titles the power star used by rosalina naturally comes from galaxy meanwhile the grand star is a very rare variation of the power star and is usually found by defeating the final boss of a world in the super mario galaxy games these stars were used to provide power to the comet observatory in galaxy one and they have more power than a typical power star in both of little mac's final smashes he transforms into gigamac in smash 4 this was a controllable final smash which powered up his moves and mobility similar to gigabowser in ultimate while the transformation is the same the final smash is now gigamac rush when gigamax rush forward connects it leads to a flurry of punches that end in a final hit to launch the opponent away gigamac comes from the punch-out reboot for wii in the two-player mode both players play as a little mac and if they punch at certain times they can earn gigamac juice when the meter is full they can transform into this jacked up version of little mac greninja's final smash is secret ninja attack greninja launches the opponent upward and follows it up by attacking them from all sides with various slashes and kicks before hitting them with one final blow the way greninja launches the opponent upwards resembles the move mat block from the pokemon games additionally in smash ultimate's version of the move greninja transforms into ash greninja this was a form that ash's greninja took on in the anime through a transformation called bond phenomenon when a pokemon and its trainer are in sync they can take on a new form and maintain a psychic bond between the two while this form first appeared in the anime it was brought to the pokemon sun and moon demo in the form of a gift greninja with a special ability battle bond this greninja can transform into ash greninja and is transferable to the full versions of pokemon sun and moon and then tradable between sun and moon and ultra sun and ultramoon following greninja is the trio of me fighters brawler sword fighter and gunner each of these knee fighters final smashes can be derived from other fighters final smashes knee brawlers is omega blitz this move uppercuts the opponent and sends them skyward while knee brawler throws multiple punches and kicks at them this move is similar to many final smashes in the game such as ikes or greninjas me sword fighters is final edge this works pretty much the same as wii fit trainers though the me sends out sword slashes rather than exercise poses and lastly me gunners is full blast in this move the mii fires a huge beam along with two smaller beams through small blasters that kinda just come out of nowhere this move can then be angled up and down and you guessed it it's pretty similar to samus's final smash palutena lets you know right away what her final smash is black hole laser as the name suggests she first summons a black hole and then shoots out a mega laser to hit anyone trapped inside both of these are moves that are usable in kid icarus uprising while black hole is only available in together mode which is the multiplayer mode for the game mega laser is available in both single and multiplayer pac-man's final smash is super pac-man which calls back to his arcade days in smash 4 this is a controllable final smash allowing the player to move pac-man up down left and right and eating opposing players which can knock them away and at high enough percents lead to akea eating multiple opponents will rack up points 200 400 800 1600 3200 and 7650 now that last number doesn't really add up properly and it's actually a reference that's found in all pac-man games 7650 itself is a japanese wordplay on namco the company who created pac-man each letter can be pronounced phonetically and make the sounds which is eerie similar when all said quickly together to namco the name of the final smash isn't a coincidence either as super pac-man was the first game which allowed this size change by eating green super pellets this power-up itself was based on a cutscene in pac-man where he is chased by a ghost while at his normal size and then chases that same ghost while giant-sized this was even referenced in pac-man's reveal trailer in ultimate the reference is exactly the same but the final smash is adjusted instead of being fully controllable pac-man goes at high speed automatically across the screen eating any player in his way just as before the player can change the angle pac-man moves by tilting the control stick up and down robin's final smash in both of his appearances is para in this final smash robin summons krom who dashes forward to initiate the first hit of the attack if this happens krom's critical hit portrait from fire emblem awakening appears and the opponent is bombarded with both sword and magic attacks krom and robin then deal a devastating final blow together pair-up is a mechanic introduced in awakening where two units can well pair up which offers stat boosts as well as a secondary attack in robin's reveal trailer krom is defeated by captain falcon who is then challenged by lucina and robin krom says that he'll get his chance another day before it's revealed that krom is a part of robin's final smash strangely though with krom being added to smash ultimate robin's final smash is entirely untouched this means that you can be fighting against krom and krom will also appear to help in the final smash it's it's confusing shulk's final smash in both smash 4 and ultimate is chain attack in this final smash dunban and riki come to shulk's aid to attack any opponents caught by the initial hitbox they mass attack the opponent before launching them away in smash ultimate mecha fiora also joins with schult spoilers interestingly this is actually inaccurate in xenoblade chronicles chain attack can only be used by three characters where ultimate uses four this final smash also has a variety of voice lines to go with it and it's random which set of lines you'll get this doesn't impact how the move is performed though and it has the exact same function either way bowser jr and the koopaling's final smash is shadow mario paint when this is activated the player transforms into shadow mario who paints an orange x across the screen if the x overlays the opponent they take damage the x finally bursts which of course causes high knockback shadow mario is seemingly the main antagonist of super mario sunshine until it's revealed that he is simply bowser jr in disguise bowser jr in this form paints graffiti all over isle delfino in order to frame mario his weapon the magic paintbrush was designed by professor e gad the same inventor of flood and the poltergust devices while the koopalings have this as their final smash only bowser jr has ever transformed into shadow mario or been known to use the magic paintbrush this is a really weird inconsistency that i was sure would at least be fixed in ultimate but it's not duck hunt's final smash is the nes zapper posse as the name suggests all three aspects of duck hunt's moveset come together for one big all-out assault a flock of 8-bit ducks rushes across screen hitting the opponent which follows into a cut scene where the duck hunt dog snickers followed by the player being caught in the middle of a gunfight between the wild gunman and the hogan's alley thugs there's not much more to explain than that because the references in the final smash are all the origin for duck hunt's entire moveset everything is just happening at once rather than individually ryu's introduction to smash marked a series first being the first ever character to have two final smashes instead of just one the first is arranged final smash shinku hadoken which is a sort of powered up version of ryu's neutral b the normal hadouken this first appeared in super street fighter 2 turbo as his super combo and has been a recurring move ever since the second final smash is a close-up final smash the shin shor yuki like the previous variant this is a crazy powered up version of one of ryu's normal moves this time the shore yookan the shinshore you can first appeared in street fighter 3 new generation as one of ryu's super arcs and has been recurring ever since ultra street fighter 4 also had a mechanic called the ultra combo double which allowed you to use two ultra combos at the cost of having less damage for each this mechanic is sort of like reused double final smash mechanic cloud's final smash is omni slash when activated a text box appears with the word omnislash in the style of final fantasy vii's text box cloud then charges forward and launches the first opponent that he hits upward they are slashed many times before being slammed downward and launched away in final fantasy 7 omni slash is the final limit break that cloud can learn both final fantasy 7 and smash use the same 15 sword slashes the text box which appears over the move is also identical to the move in the original game along with the inclusion of sephiroth cloud received a new final smash exclusive to his advent children costume slots this final smash is now omni slash version 5. cloud knocks his opponent up into the air and the fusion sword splits up into six parts circling around cloud cloud uses all of these sword parts to attack the opponent before slamming them down to the ground functionally this is the same as the original omni slash final smash but with fewer hits meaning that each hit does 0.5 damage more to keep it even this version of the move comes from the finishing move cloud uses against sephiroth in final fantasy vii advent children which cloud resorts to when the original omni slash fails coryn's final smash is torrential roar during this move he transforms into dragon form and two beams of light appear on either side if any opponents are hit a cinematic plays where corn will fire a huge whirlpool trapping anyone hit by the final smash this plays out for a moment before the opponents are finally launched away the move depicted in this final smash is unique to super smash brothers however it's sort of an amped up form of a power that characters in fire emblem fates can possess azura and anand kos both have the ability to manipulate water as does corn however this move is not specifically seen in any fire emblem game the final character added to smash for 3ds and wii u was of course the aneta her final smash is infernal climax when activated which time occurs across the entire stage slowing all opponents and increasing bayonetta's combo potential a climax gauge appears and it's bayonetta's goal to attack all opponents enough to fill this meter if this meter is successfully filled bayonetta summons the demon gamora who attacks the fighters anyone with over 100 damage is instantly ko'd while all others are simply sent flying as usual this move is based on bayonetta's primary finisher on large opponents in her home game the climax gauge is similar to the appearance of the one in bayonetta 2 however this one is filled using quicktime events rather than straight up damage dealt the demon that she summons gamora is one of her infernal demons in bayonetta 1 this is her go-to while in bayonetta 2 gamora breaks free and bayonetta must fight and reclaim her but of course smash 4 also introduced two new echo fighters the first of which is lucina as an echo fighter of marth lucina's final smash is exactly the same as his critical hit the reference is exactly the same being based on critical hits from the fire emblem series and the function and power are identical as well the second echo fighter introduced was dark pit dark pit was originally going to be a skin for pit however because pit's final smash in smash 4 was the three sacred treasures this wouldn't make very much sense as a result dark pit's final smash is the dark pit staff in this final smash he takes out his staff and launches a powerful shot across the screen dealing heavy knockback to anyone who is caught this final smash itself is a clone as well being functionally identical to both zelda and sheik's light arrow in smash 4. however as both of those characters received fresh final smashes and ultimate this move is now exclusive to dark pit the staff is one of the many weapons available in kid icarus uprising the dark pit staff is unlocked after chapter 6 and can be created through fusion it was also used by dark pit himself to snipe at pit during that same chapter inkling's final smash is the killer whale inkling pulls out an ink powered megaphone and places it on the ground it launches sound waves before blasting players with ink for a short time before sending a final hitbox to launch them away the beam can be angled up and down but unlike samus's final smash for example inkling can also move about the stage while angling and while the final smash is happening in the first place the killer whale is a special weapon that debuted in the first splatoon by inking enough of the environment a meter can be filled and then the player can gain access to their special weapon the killer whale functions pretty similarly in splatoon to the final smash and ultimate and is used more as an offensive weapon than for covering the ground with ink the killer whale no longer appears in splatoon 2 outside of a special version that is used by an npc in the octo expansion ridley's final smash is plasma scream in this final smash ridley dashes forward and anyone hit by it is transported into a cutscene all players that are hit are concussed or something while on top of samus's gunship and ridley launches a huge beam at them the ship explodes and any player that's over 100 percent gets instantly ko'd anyone who is less than that is simply launched away when play returns to the stage you can actually see samus gunship slowly falling in the background now this actual scene has never really taken place in any metroid games but it's sort of a conglomeration of different elements from the series ridley has always been able to breathe fire but blasting a laser wasn't possible for him until metroid prime when he became meta ridley meanwhile the gunship has been destroyed on many occasions in two of the metroid prime games as well as in metroid zero mission and metroid fusion simon's final smash is grand cross a coffin appears in front of simon who captures anyone touching it and traps them inside literally the plot of like a thousand horror movies he then launches it in the air using his chain whip simon then shouts grand cross and several glowing crosses batter the coffin with damage until they are sent flying away interestingly simon has actually never used grand cross in a proper castlevania game he's been able to use it once in the fighting game castlevania judgment but in actual games his usage has been non-existent i'll talk about the origin for this final smash in a minute but this move isn't truly associated with simon next is the big boss himself king k rool his final smash is blastomatic king k rool stomps and rushes forward and anybody hit by this move is sent into a cutscene king k rool is then seen sitting on his throne on crocodile isle and firing the blastomatic at the sculpture on kong isle where the opponents are laying and for some reason not attempting to run away from it all the island is then hit and blown up and the opponents that are on the island are sent flying this final smash was literally king k rool's plan in donkey kong 64. defeat after defeat ate away at king k rool until he wanted to blow up the entire island in the game over sequence of donkey kong 64 the destruction seen in this final smash is heavily implied though it's never actually seen this final smash while very similar also has some distinct differences to donkey kong 64. first crocodile isle is a moving naval fortress in dk64 but in smash it's shown as a natural island additionally kong isle is depicted more in its donkey kong country design rather than the donkey kong 64 style isabel's final smash is dream town hall this functions almost exactly the same as villagers isabel calls the aid of tom nook and timmy and tommy but instead of building a house they build the town hall because of the bigger building the final smash does considerably more damage and knockback the town hall has been a location since animal crossing wild world on the nintendo ds but its most pivotal role was of course a new leaf due to the player taking on the role of mayor rather than being just a normal villager isabel is the secretary for the mayor and obviously works in the town hall so this is why it was chosen over the house for the final smash incineroar's final smash is the max malicious moonsault incineroar launches forward sort of like a maxed out version of his alolan whip if he catches an opponent he transports them to a wrestling ring and launches them upward twice before slamming them down with his head into a giant explosion launching them away surrounding opponents can be hit by the explosion but only one character at a time can be hit by incineroar's full final smash this move is based on incineroar's most powerful z move z moves were a new mechanic introduced in pokemon sun and moon when holding a z crystal a pokemon can perform a super powered up version of the selected move incineroar's signature move is darkest lariat which is just a normal move that can be used at any time but when the z crystal is activated darkest lariat becomes the z-move malicious moonsault of course the final smash is called max malicious moonsault and sakurai himself has said that this final smash is meant to be an even faster and fiercer move than the original z move that's funny because the final smash is a maxed out version of a move from the pokemon games which is already a maxed out move of another move so it's like triple strong or something like that dark samus's final smash is faison laser and unsurprisingly is pretty much identical to samus's final smash the colors are themed differently matching dark samus's dark aesthetic the move is also ever so slightly weaker though the difference is literally a difference of like two to three percent the name of this final smash is also one of the small differences samus's is called zero laser while dark samus's is called faison laser this is simply renamed because in the metroid prime series dark samus is actually a creature of faison which simply took the form of samus as far as an actual origin dark samus final smash really is just a smash original at most it's just a copy of samus's final smash which is also smash original so there's really nothing too deep here daisy's final smash is daisy blossom while the name is different being a pun on her own name the function is exactly the same as peach's final smash daisy will dance while two images of her appear on either side of the screen all grounded enemies fall asleep and instead of giant peaches giant daisies appear which can also be eaten to restore some health the origin of this is precisely the same as peach's final smash but simply adjusted to match daisy despite being an echo fighter of roy krom's final smash is not critical hit instead he has awakening aether this is a skill and fire emblem which can be learned by krom if he is advanced to the great lord class the voice lines krom can possibly use when using this final smash are also the exact same lines that he can use in fire emblem awakening interestingly him having aether as a final smash increases the similarity with ike while his moveset is largely based on roy his up special is famously very similar to ike's with some slight differences this similarity is further cemented by both characters being aether users ken just like ryu has two final smashes depending on where the opponent is in relation to it and also like ryu this is similar to a mechanic that can be used in street fighter 4 where two supers can be used at the cost of less damage if opponents are far away ken's final smash is shin ryuken ken does a powerful uppercut and a huge pillar of fire is summoned to damage and knock away players this move first appeared in the 1995 title street fighter alpha and has been a staple of ken's move sets in pretty much every street fighter game since sakurai has stated that this moo's inspiration comes specifically from marvel vs capcom close up ken's final smash becomes shipu jin rikyaku ken kicked several times forward before lifting off the ground in an aerial tatsumaki senpukyaku to overwhelm the opponent for the potential ko this move was introduced as one of ken's super arcs and street fighter 3. this move is also famously known for its role in what has become known as evil moment 37 one of the greatest comebacks in fighting game history this is even referenced in the ken reveal trailer where ken perry's little max attack before using his super just like daigo did at evo 2004 finally the last echo fighter is richter an echo of simon richter's final smash is also grand cross but like i said before the reference actually rests on richter rather than simon grant cross debuted in castlevania rondo of blood while many belmonts can also use grand cross it's probably richter's most iconic move and he's able to perform it in every game he's in on top of this the visuals of the final smash are based on the appearance of grand cross in rondo of blood like sakurai said in the direct that revealed simon and richter they both borrow moves from each other so who really is the echo fighter here piranha plant's final smash summons the biggest plant of them all petey piranha petey swings around his two cages capturing any opponents who make contact with them and dealing massive damage as piranha plant moves around pd will jump around kind of following plant but in a really limited way this is used as a way to jump around and get opponents who might be trying to avoid the final smash but it can also send petey down to his death if left on stage until the end of the move pd will breathe fire into both cages and slam them down sending any players inside or hit by the cages flying towards the blast zone petey piranha first appeared in super mario sunshine and he has been kind of a staple boss throughout the entire mario series ever since but the pd piranha used for the final smash was a boss in super smash brothers brawl's subspace emissary mode and his function as piranha plant's final smash is a repurposing of this boss fight but of course it has some tweaks to make it more appropriate as a final smash in brawl pd captures peach and zelda each in a separate cage and whichever you focus on saving becomes your next team member peach and zelda hang out in those cages during the entire boss fight but in ultimate these cages are empty and they're actually used to capture your opponents the boss also has multiple attacks that aren't featured in the final smash but personally i think it's really cool to see pd return after such a long hiatus from smash but with that let's now talk about the first fighter pass character joker's final smash is all out attack or joint raid if you're playing in japanese this is a recurring command in the persona series in which the party's members group up to attack once certain requirements have been met rather than each member attacking individually but as a fighter in smash the game kind of has to ignore those rpg elements and all out attack is simply his final smash cutscene once empowered with the final smash joker will dash forward and anybody hit by the dash will be attacked by the final smash joker can also do a second dash input by tilting the control stick in the opposite direction of the initial dash which can get more opponents in the final smash or simply give him a second chance to hit someone that he may have missed once the final smash cut scene begins all players hit will be attacked by some of the phantom thieves in two different possible groups joker alongside on ryuji and morgana or joker alongside makoto yusuke and heru either morgana or futaba will have some voice lines during this final smash and each have three different possible sayings when the attack is over joker jumps forward and poses at the screen while the opponents are suffering from their injuries if any player is at or above a hundred percent after this final smash is over they will instantly be killed and if the final stock was taken using this final smash the game will simply end on this splash screen rather than returning to normal play first this final smash is effectively identical to the version of the move from persona 5 with the biggest difference being in the final pose shot in the background of persona 5's version the enemies have blood spraying out of their wounds however in smash this has changed to simply be sparkles additionally morgana in p5 says time for some bloodshed but this was changed to time for some brutality in smash these changes were made in order to fall in line with the game's rating as the dlc needs to maintain the same rating that the base game was granted joker's final smash is also the first final smash ever to utilize a pre-rendered cutscene for every other final smash prior to this one the in-game engine and models were used to perform the cinematic for the final smash for joker however this is just basically a video file that plays in the background while the actual fighter models are doing their own respective thing this is kind of a neat behind the curtain aspect of this final smash you kind of get to see in the mind of the developer for a little bit i guess it was either too taxing on the switch hardware or simply not worth the development team's time to make it a fully played out final smash so it's simply basically an mp4 file being played whenever you activate it but with that let's move on to hero hero's final smash is gigaslash hiro's sword becomes empowered with lightning and he slashes forward hitting any opponents in front of him when successful a cutscene plays where hiro draws upon the power of every dragon quest protagonist that is not playable in smash the protagonist from dragon quest 1 2 5 6 7 9 and 10. they all touch the tips of their primary weapons together in a circle summoning lightning which the playable hero will then cast out from their sword to deal knockback on the players who were hit gigaslash is a move first introduced in dragon quest 6 and is a recurring ability throughout the dragon quest series however unlike its appearance in smash this is simply a normal ability that can be learned that isn't influenced by other protagonists or characters so while the move has bases in the actual dragon quest franchise some liberties were taken by the smash team most likely the move was meant to follow the theme of the entire character of hiro and was meant to represent the franchise as a whole since not every protagonist could be used as a playable character all non-playable characters were given spotlight in the final smash hiro also became the second fighter to use a pre-rendered cutscene for their final smash again this was likely because it was easier to implement a video and it definitely could have been too taxing for the switch having to load seven new character models for the final smash might have been too much for the switch hardware especially considering that there could have been potentially eight different characters already being used in an 8 player smash so it was instead made a simple video interestingly this cinematic was also recreated for the dragon quest mobile game dragon quest scan battlers masahiro sakurai tweeted out a screenshot of the final smash then followed up with a video that shows a similar cinematic being used in the phone game of course the cinematic in the phone game came out after smash so this is just a fun little nod to hero in smash the third fighter pass slot is taken up by banjo and kazooie their final smash is the mighty ginginator when activated a giant statue will appear out of the ground and hit players in its range following this a cutscene plays where one of the characters hit will be bombarded by jinjos before slammed for a final hit by the jinjinator jinjos are a race of creatures found throughout the banjo-kazooie franchise in each game jinjos are a collectible that banjo and kazooie can find throughout their exploration of each world banjo-kazooie and banjo-kazooie grunty's revenge each feature five jinjos in each world but banjo-tooie breaks the mold not only are there an inconsistent number of jinjos in each world but the actual color of the jinjo's found is totally random for each save file the location stayed the same but the colors will be different each time the actual ginginator is featured during the final boss fight of banjo-kazooie after several phases gruntilda summons a force field that makes her immune to all of banjo and kazooie's attacks so the jinjos come to the duo's aid with four statues appearing on the battlefield after activating each statue the jinjo inside will fly at grunty and once all are activated the fifth and final statue the mighty jinjinator will request to be activated the mighty jinjinator is either the god or the ruler of the jinjos depending on which game you're looking at and once activated will bombard grunty with a series of multiple attacks before finally slamming her once and for all off the top of her castle down to spiral mountain where she becomes trapped under a gigantic boulder this final boss sequence is actually referenced in the reveal trailer for banjo and kazooie with king k rool being the substitute for grunty falling off the castle and being crushed by the boulder the fourth slot is of course terry bogard from the fatal fury and king of fighters series and his final smash is triple wolf first terry will shout overheat and release a triple geyser which confirms a hit if an opponent is hit by them this then transitions into a cutscene where terry hits the opponent with a power dunk before charging up and performing a buster wolf on the opponent this final smash is rather unique in that it simply utilizes aspects of terry's standard moveset it's just done in a more dramatic and flashy way the triple geyser is a set of three power geysers which is one of terry's super special moves that he can perform once he's above a hundred percent power dunk is terry's down special and buster wolf is the other super special move that can be used these moves all of course come from various moves through terry's long history in the fatal fury and king of fighters franchises each first appearing in different games last but not least is violet the rep hailing from fire emblem 3 houses their final smash is quite the mouthful progenitor god ruptured heaven phylus whips their sword forward trapping anyone hit by its range a cutscene then begins where sotis is in the background charging violeth up with power and turning their hair green phyleth then launches their sword outward to send the opponent flying ruptured heaven is an attack found in fire emblem 3 houses an art which is exclusive to bileth while using the sword of the creator however this progenitor god version meant to be a super high energy version is kind of a smash original fire emblem 3 houses does have an upgraded version called sublime heaven which is a part of the upgraded sublime creator sword used in chapter 10. because bileth in the final smash has green hair it means that this actually can't be the base ruptured heaven but it has to be the upgraded sublime heaven so really it's an upgrade of an upgrade of a standard move min min's final smash is called arms rush activating this final smash has min min punch with one of her arms to strike the opponent then a cutscene will play in which spring man ribbon girl ninjara twintel mechanica and master mummy all bombard the opponent with their attacks before min min launches a laser which serves as the final blow sending the opponent flying rushes are a technique in arms that all fighters can activate during a match in arms these abilities charge over time as well as when a player uses an attack kind of similar to the function of final smash meters in smash ultimate rushes come in many forms in arms and are different depending on the player's arm loadout arms rush is a supercharged original move designed specifically for smash meant to help represent arms as a whole because minmin is the only actual fighter in the game the other representatives of arms get a spot in the final smash so they aren't totally left out the variety of arms bombarding the opponent could have also been inspired by the ending of the reveal trailer for arms where spring man is matrix style dodging through the other character's arms except you know this time the characters are actually hitting the opponent the final hit of the move also has a gong sound effect to it with the opponent being pinned against the gong this is likely a reference to ramen bowl minmin stage in arms where a gong can potentially be struck by an attack in order to make a gong noise steve and alex and zombie in enderman's final smash is called house of boom or in japanese trap room this final smash is initiated by the player activating a giant piston which launches forward hitting the opponent a cut scene is then activated in which the opponent is blasted into the house of boom surrounded by tnt before a huge crowd of zombies and creepers come at the opponent the creepers then get close enough to explode setting off a chain reaction which causes the entire house of boom to explode ultimately launching the player towards their potential demise and then steve pops up to eat a steak and tea bag afterwards just to add insult to injury so there is a lot to unpack here first off the house of boom itself is not actually a naturally occurring structure in minecraft but sakurai did state that it was inspired by players creating buildings that are set up with traps for other players to run into there are of course large structures in minecraft filled with mobs or traps but i think that tying any parallel between those structures and this final smash would be a bit of a stretch the piston used to initiate the final smash is however a real item which could be used to push mobs items and other players but it never appears in this gigantic form in vanilla minecraft which we can just chalk up to final smashes being souped up versions of a character's abilities this final smash is also the third final smash in the game to utilize a pre-rendered cutscene rather than having the game actually perform the final smash using models every time this is likely a performance thing for the switch because even the best computers sometimes have issues with that many explosions happening simultaneously in minecraft and the switch is certainly not that powerful but both steve and the opponents are the only things that are not pre-rendered during this sequence sephiroth's final smash is called supernova upon activation this final smash has sephiroth swing out his giant sword hitting any opponents in its range then a cutscene activates where he turns into safer sephiroth and summons a meteor which crashes through a planet and hits a star while mathematical equations appear on screen this causes the star to explode leading to the destruction of another planet which is presumed to be earth yeah that is metal and it's definitely up there for one of the wildest final smashes in the game once you actually pay attention to what's happening the opponent is then dealt some damage and a completely random effect will occur the opponent can either be put to sleep have a giant flower on their head which will gradually increase their damage have their controls reversed have their shield broken causing them to be stunned have their speed slowed down by half or simply launched a little further than usual safer sephiroth is the form that sephiroth takes on in this final smash and is his ultimate form in final fantasy vii without getting too in-depth sephirot created this body as a means to ascend to become a god by merging with the life stream of the planet this form of sephiroth is also the form that the player will fight in technically the final battle of the game i say technically because after this fight there is another fight but it's a scripted unlosable fight that exists purely for the sake of the plot the move supernova is safer sephiroth's ultimate attack which has become infamous among final fantasy vii fans the attack initiates a sequence that takes 2 full minutes to actually play out with sephiroth summoning a meteor which strikes the sun causing the solar waves to hit the planet and deal damage equal to 15 16 of the party's current hp this is obviously where the final smash comes from but the cutscene is made much much shorter while still hitting the same beats could you imagine sitting there for two minutes just waiting for sephiroth's final smash to finish interestingly the japanese version of the game made the move much shorter and made it deal only a static amount of damage but the international release for some reason had these weird changes that went on to become infamous supernova and final fantasy vii also has the chance of causing confusion silence and slow status effects which is why smash has the move result in a variety of different effects at random which i think is a nice little touch the mathematical equations that appear on screen are directly inspired by the move in final fantasy vii which displays mathematical equations that are relevant to the attractive forces between the sun and the planet and the energy of a supernova being directed to the planet but i guess the smash team didn't want to go that in depth with all of the math because the final smash does not use this set of equations and instead uses more general formulas for astrophysics and other related sciences that i am certainly not smart enough to begin to comprehend or explain and finally supernova is the fourth and last final smash in the game that uses a pre-rendered cutscene rather than using in-engine cinematics with the others of course being steve's house of boom heroes gigaslash and joker's all-out attack pira's final smash is called burning sword pirates summons rex who uses a flaming aegis sword to attack the opponent the move then transitions into a cutscene where rex and pyra each wield the aegis sword in one hand before leaping at the opponent shouting out burning sword and summoning a large pillar of fire the opponents are damaged by this fire before being launched by a final explosion burning sword is pyra's level 4 blade special in xenoblade chronicles 2 and the final smash version of this move is a pretty faithful recreation of the move from a visual standpoint in combat in xenoblade 2 burning sword can only hit a single enemy but in smash the pillar of fire is of course capable of hitting multiple opponents mithra's final smash is called sacred arrow like pyra mithra 2 summons rex who uses the aegis sword to attack the opponent the game then transitions to a cinematic where rex and mithra nod at each other before both holding on to the aegis sword to attack the opponent the opponent is then hit by a barrage of light beams from the sky before one big one finishes the move launching the opponent sacred arrow is mithras level 4 blade special in xenoblade chronicles 2. and the final smash version of the move is also pretty faithful to the source game though the camera angles are of course a bit different the move in xenoblade chronicles 2 is also normally not possible indoors but having something like that in smash would mean a good chunk of stages would not allow this final smash to be used so that little nugget is ignored kazuya's final smash is called final blaster in this final smash kaja enters his devil form and fires a beam out that covers a considerable distance all opponents caught in this beam are stunned and kazuya will shout this will be your burial ground before firing off multiple lasers to cover a huge area before having them all come together to form one giant final blast sending the opponents blind this final smash is based on the story mode of tekken 7 in which devil kazia attacks hayachi and uses this as a story exclusive rage art rage arts are a new type of move introduced in tekken 7 that can be used when a character has rage which activates when at low health devil kazia calls out the exact same line about the burial ground then launches forward uppercuts the opponent into the air and then flies at them knocking them back to the ground he then lands and charges up a large number of lasers that overcome the opponent smash obviously doesn't use this entire sequence but instead uses just the laser portion to serve as a giant aoe attack devil kazia's appearance in the final smash is different from his appearance in the rest of his smash move set the final smash appearance is instead the appearance from the previously mentioned final battle in the story mode of tekken 7. the location the final smash takes place on is based on brimstone and fire the stage that this final battle also takes place on in the game and the final final smash is soros which is called sealing the keyhole sora initiates this final smash by shooting out a dark beam from his keyblade this beam launches out to a certain point but will stop short if an opponent ends up in its way a giant keyhole with darkness inside appears and all opponents hit by the beam tumble into it this keyhole transitions into the opponents falling into an open door filled with darkness before the doors close revealing a big smash logo and a keyhole sora aims his keyblade shooting a beam into the keyhole before turning the keyblade to lock the door resulting in the door exploding if the opponent is at or over 100 it will instantly kill them but under 100 will result in regular knockback on the final explosion this final smash is based on one of the final scenes in kingdom hearts 1. ansem seeker of darkness has found the door to darkness which is a door that leads to kingdom hearts which is ansem's ultimate goal in the first game after the door lets out light defeating ansem darkness begins to pour through and sora donald and goofy all try to close the door king mickey appears telling sora that they need to each use their keyblades to seal the door from their respective side throughout the game sora has been sealing keyholes to the various disney worlds so this is the final keyhole that needs to be sealed in the game the final smash obviously takes its liberties but it's clear that this scene is what inspired the move with the smash team adding their own smash bros twist to it literally this scene in kingdom hearts 1 is actually the only point in the whole game that mickey mouse appears in tetsuya nomura the game's director explained that disney was hesitant on the first kingdom hearts game and they were protective of the mickey mouse ip so they only allowed mickey to appear in one scene and nomura wanted that scene to be impactful which led to this moment the success of kingdom hearts not only spawned more games but allowed square enix to more freely use mickey in the sequels letting him become far more integral to the story [Music] you
