and now without further ado let's go [Music] first story entitled neighbor blocks emt loses parking space not a native speaker so please bear with me we are the second to last house at the end of a cul-de-sac you can drive in but there is no room to turn your car you need to drive backwards all the way out when we got the house we did a core renovation and with we i mean my whole family my father died from alzheimer's disease a few years back my mother had a stroke shortly after i do not have any siblings so i love my in-laws like my own parents i consider my brother-in-law my brother with a few exceptions electrics we did all the renovating by ourselves in the last house in the cul-de-sac lives an elderly lady with her grandson they drive all the way up in park in front of their house 24 7. the way in the cul-de-sac is public and very narrow only one car fits through they get visitors every day usually the daughter or her brothers they also drive all the way up and park there even when there is no space to do so in this case they just park in front of our house and all the way down on national holidays the visitors clog down nearly the whole cul-de-sac as they all visit the elderly lady and cannot be bothered to park outside the cul-de-sac about 100 meters down the cul-de-sac at the entry point there is plenty of space to park cars downside you have to walk 100 meters so whenever we would briefly drive up to your house to unload building material you could bet that either someone had to drive out or up at first we would move our car in the midst of unloading all the way down and back up after a while we noticed that they needed to go down usually five minutes after we started unloading not always but a lot of times when this happened they needed to go down we moved the car down back up continued unloading and while we were still unloading the needed to get back up stopped unloading drove our car down they went back up and we followed you get my drift we usually did not have to bring the car up for unloading more than two to three times a day so after a while we would politely ask them to wait a few minutes for us to finish they could not be bothered to wait they often just parked their car behind our car and left trapping our car we then had to wait usually the case or go up to their house and ask them to move their car this went back and forth for about six months in the heat of the summer when we cleaned out our garden basically removing the jungle my father-in-law collapsed we immediately called an ambulance and thought he had a stroke the ambulance arrived shortly after and the emts went to my father-in-law in the garden the ambulance car stayed in front of our house of course in order to help my father-in-law in the best way possible about five minutes in the grandson arrives and notices that he cannot get through to his house a big ambulance blocking the way he gets out comes into our garden and tells us to move the ambulance as he has to get through no one reacts at first as the emts treat my father-in-law after one to two excuse me he gets loud he walks up to the emts and tells them in a very loud voice to move their car the emts ignore him and we try to get him to step back after not being able to get the ambulance moved he leaves a few minutes later the emts decide to move my father-in-law to the hospital but guess what the grandson's car is blocking the ambulance from leaving the cull to sack one emt gets pissed and goes up to the neighbor's house rings no answer rings again no one reacts he goes around the house and sees the elderly lady eating with her grandson of course they could not be bothered to move the car long story short his car had to be towed aftermath thank god it was not a stroke but my father-in-law had collapsed due to the heat the emt or the police seemed to have reported the incident and a city official came to assess the parking situation in case an ambulance or the fire department would have to respond to an emergency again they told our neighbors that they are not allowed to park in front of their house longer than it takes to load or unload their cars they ignored this at first but the city followed up on that and the tickets are getting more and more expensive as they are willfully ignoring the city's order as the city official comes by to check regularly we have now bets running when they are going to park down the street next story a karen story with a plot twist my first time on reddit and english is not my mother tongue so sorry for the mistakes i worked in a big retail store for four years when i was younger and i met some crazy cairns and darren's there my very first one however was the most impressive so i thought it would be nice to share it with you all to give you some context the store is big three floors with several departments in each and specializes in stationaries and art supplies dozens of different papers pens brushes paints etc i was working in the pen and paper department which was the closest to the entrance and the registers on top of having to help all the customers lost by the size of the store we also had to deal with a 10 meters long wall full of different pens more than 200 different sorts of pens were carefully organized there the pen wall was behind a counter where the employees would serve the customers i was still fairly new one or two months of practice and i had a lot to learn since we were approaching the christmas season we also had to deal with an increasing invasion of customers my older co-worker and supervisor asked me to deal with the customers lost in the aisles while she was taking care of the pen wall so basically i stood by the front of the counter while she stayed in the back and so entered mrs karen a grumpy middle-aged woman who asked me where to find stabilo pens for those who don't know that brand it's a really common and cheap colored pen brand for kids of course it's right there i told her she glanced at the aisle and the dozen of stabilo sets available and quickly responded no i don't want a set i want to choose what colors i want oh right you'll have to go to the counter then i showed her the pen wall and explained to her you can test all the pens you want there when you made your choice just ask my co-worker for new ones she made a grump noise and started testing the pens since she doesn't seem to have any more questions i left her be and went to help the other customers about 15 minutes later i heard screaming at the registers i turned my head to see what's going on and it's karen with a bunch of stabilo in hand and arguing with the cashier she's finally going back towards me fuming and a quick look at her hand gave me the answer to what's going on she took the testing pens which were marked with a big not for sale on it before she started yelling at me i politely reminded her that she needed to ask for new ones at the counter she's looking at me like she was about to kill me but said nothing and basically threw the test pens on the counter in front of my coworker who was not happy but stayed professional she received the new ones and went back to the register my co-worker and i shared a silent look of disbelief toward her behavior but there were a lot of customers around us so we went back to work a few minutes later we heard more screaming and it's karen who's coming back this time her crunching hand held two things the poor pens and a receipt she went right at me put the receipt in my face and started yelling are you trying to steal from me the prices are wrong i counted it before i took 5 pens which cost 70 cents each why did you make me pay 6 euros this store would do anything to steal more from its customers at this point i took a step back as she was way too close to me i'm sorry ma'am it's probably a mistake let me look at the prices at the counter she grumpily follows me while i look more closely to the stabilo section of the counter again one glance was enough to find the source of the problem there were two sizes of stabilo pens the thin ones cost 70 cent each while the big ones cost one 20 euros each she took the big ones and expected to be the prices of the other i noticed something a bit odd the two price tags were put on the side of the big stabilo pens we checked the counter every morning to make sure everything is in place and i was pretty sure that the price tags were at the right places at the time so basically the thin pens were on the left side with no prices under it and the big pens were on the right side with two prices under it the price tags had thin stabilo and big stabilo written on it in big letters so even a child could have guessed the price of each but apparently not our karen i tried to explain to her but she wouldn't let me she started to scream like a banshee that we were thieves that it was a scandal yada yada she finally ordered me to give her a discount i'm sorry ma'am i can't do that i don't have the authorization to do so only the manager and she didn't let me finish the magic word was told and everyone knows what comes next the big i want to speak to you manager scream i'm gonna be honest at this point that was what i was hoping for i was still a newbie employee and was not really sure of the policies of the store about this type of customer the price tags were in the wrong places and i knew that for some manager it was enough to make a discount but like i was trying to say to her only the manager and two senior employees were allowed to make a special discount so in order to calm her down i invited her to go to the manager's office silly me of course she refused and ordered me to go fetch him i sighed in silence and went toward the stairs knowing well enough that i had about a 10 chance to find the manager in his office on a busy saturday i was lucky though as i heard his loud voice in another department nearby my manager was not an easy man and he was the type to put the customer's way above his employees well-being over the years i learned how to be on his good side but at this point i have to be completely honest i was a bit scared of him he was scolding another employee who probably rolled her eyes when he was not looking when i called him there is a problem with a customer who so you finally gonna tell me what it's all about uh i heard the screaming what's the problem internally i was like why didn't you come if you heard her i explained to him the whole situation he took it with a completely neutral face and he ended with the prices were correct or not uh yeah it took me a while to get used to his get to the point questions the price tags of the pens were the prices correct or not they were a bit misplaced but yeah the prices are correct then no discount then we only give discounts if there is an error on the price tags she's not going to be happy well i don't care that's our store policy if she's not happy with the price we can take the pens back and refund her on a gift card so she can buy something else i'm busy now so deal with her yourself so yeah not your usual manager i guess anyway i went back to the pen counter where she was still fuming and talking about how incompetent we were at this point it was clear that she wanted to leave the store so i thought that the refund offer was a good deal i smiled and said so i talked to the manager and he apologized for the price tag misplacement yeah i learned really quickly to be more diplomatic on behalf of my manager sadly we can't give you a discount but we can refund you the total so you can buy the pens that you want in my employee smile faded away thanks to her death glare and my voice was quickly covered by her banshee scream i only managed to understand a few words scandal thieves manager money back now she was like a bull ready to charge me and i took all my courage in hand to run away and decided to come back with the manager this time she was a lot scarier and louder than him of course my manager vanished when i went back and i returned to the main stairs defeated finally i heard hoy what's going on over there it's one of my older co-workers who looked at me like i was coming back from the war who's the lady screaming like that i explained to him the situation and he scoffed make her go away it's bad for business we can hear her in all the stores she doesn't want to she wants a discount or a full refund in cash no gift card and the manager doesn't want to then fine i'll do it myself then i looked at him in disbelief i completely forgot that he was one of the two employees who could do that beside our manager you're sure yeah tell her to come to my counter she's a problem i want her away i was so relieved that i could hug him i go back to her full of hope ready to give her the good news yes crazy lady you can be refunded in cash and leave our lives forever thank you and please never come back or of course the diplomatic version of that i found her a bit further between the pen counter and the registers after hearing the deal crazy karen went dead silent with my hope still high and then went completely red-faced then out of her came the biggest loudest scariest scream i never heard in my life she was so loud that everyone around turned to look at her the customers were in shock and my co-workers were livid i couldn't even make a word out of her scream while i was facing the pen counter i could see my coworker and supervisor death glaring at me with a make her go away subtitle on it was like being stuck in front of a speaker with high volume on and wondering where the button off was while having your ears pierced by the screeching sound she went on and on without me being able to ask her what her problem was finally i took a step back and realized how insanely ridiculous she was a little middle-aged rounded woman standing in the middle of the store and making a scene so big that it could make a toddler jealous i had enough of her and just talked firmly to her for the first time ma'am can you please calm down weirdly that stopped her immediately and she looked at me in disbelief i took her sudden silence as an opportunity to continue still calmly but firmly ma'am please it's not necessary to scream like that for a price difference of three euros you refused the gift card and the refund propositions i told you several times that we will not give you a discount on the pens what do you want now she continued to look at me like she was seeing me for the first time her face was completely white and her eyes looked like the ones of a dead fish finally she just left without a word her pens and her receipt still crunched in her hand she just left it was so sudden that nobody moved after she was gone all the customers were still looking at where she stood wondering what they just witnessed finally we went back to our senses and i saw that my co-worker was alone to face a dozen customers waiting at her counter without a word i went to help her and we managed to serve them all quickly the customers were particularly nice with us for some reason the end of the day was near and almost all the customers had left leaving us in a wonderfully quiet and empty store my co-worker came to talk to me and i was sure to hear about my poor handling of the crazy karen situation i was the one who became speechless after my coworker actually apologized to me i'm sorry that you had to deal with her alone when she came to the counter for the pens she asked me for the prices and i showed the price tags they were not misplaced at the time i also told her to not take the test pens to the registers not only she didn't listen but she lied to you she changed the prices herself i wanted to tell you but you were too far away and i couldn't accuse her like that in front of all the customers so yeah her death glare was actually not towards me but towards the crazy karen and this is how my first crazy karen day ended no harm done just a crazy story to tell years after right well yes that's why my story is not completely finished are you ready for a quick epilogue you see since it was my new job i like to talk about my new retail adventures to my mom she worked in retail 2 before her current job and she loves to hear about crazy customers so of course i told her karen's tale when i visited her a week after weirdly enough she wasn't amused by my story like usual she kept a blank face all along which took me off guard at some point i asked her if she was okay and she just said yeah yeah keep going it's just that well keep going at one point she asked me what karen looked like which confused me i don't know middle age short hair a bit overweight i don't like to judge people by their look and i didn't see why it was relevant to my story my mom brushed it off and told me to continue i finished my story and was disappointed that she didn't seem to enjoy it i was sure that it would make her laugh i insisted on knowing why she was acting so weird she made a grim face and explained well that karen i think she's actually my coworker quote dot dot dot what mom come on i have hundreds of customers per day you can't say that just by my brief description well she told me last week that she was looking for stabilo pens to buy by unit i talked to her about the store where you work and about the pen wall that you described to me i even told her that if she went on saturday you would be able to help her directly the monday after i asked if she found what she needed at your store and she just brushed it off she never responded to me me a tiny bit shocked asked and she yells like that at your workplace too yeah she's known to be a full karen i was trying to be nice to her i never thought it would blow up in your face like that after a pause she added with a smile i think that at the end when you told her to calm down she finally recognized you as my daughter and didn't dare to continue so yeah here is my story of how my very first karen encounter turns
