Entering Into His REST Part 6

[Music] if you have a bible romans chapter 8 today um i just got some things i want to read you printed on the back of a leather jacket worn by a motorcyclist if you can read this my girlfriend fell off escargot i don't eat snails i prefer fast food on my first day of school my parents dropped me off at the wrong nursing nursery there i was surrounded by trees and bushes if at first you don't succeed don't try skydiving inside of some of us is a thin person struggling to get out he or she usually can be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake all right we've been talking about entering into rest god is actually calling us as his kids to to live in a place of rest there is a place of rest for the people of god where we cease from doing our own things trying to struggle and make things happen and we actually allow the god who lives inside of us to live through us a couple weeks ago we we looked at the value of praying in the spirit praying in tongues as it relates relates to rest in his discourse on tongues the apostle paul in 1st corinthians 14 he quoted isaiah chapter 28 verse 11. and and then in verse 12 of from where he quoted it says this and i think i have a slight for this yes i do this is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing are you weary do you need rest and refreshing there is something according to the apostle paul tied in and connected with praying in the spirit praying in tongues and rest and refreshing now today i want to keep looking at praying in the spirit and and the value that it has in our lives you know i shared with you a couple weeks ago how i was raised in a in a christian home but it was kind of a nominal christian home and you know we went to church my parents made me go to church i used to tell people my parents are the reason for my drug problem because they drug me to church every sunday and when i hit a certain age they they said you don't you know they stopped making me go and i launched into a definite season of rebelliousness as a teenager and and started making all kinds of wrong choices but at about 19 god got a hold of my life and i'll tell you what happened is my p god got a hold of my parents lives and it had to do with the baptism in the holy spirit that these two presbyterian uh this presbyterian couple i referred to as my parents they had this encounter with god that just set them on fire and it and i i could no longer ignore the reality of god and nor the reality of his goodness and it caused me to come to him it caused me to respond to him but it was really the charismatic renewal it was the gifts of the holy spirit it was the manifestations of the holy spirit that really grabbed my attention as a young man in philippians 4 paul alludes to the fact that the way we are to be anxious for nothing that the way we are to do that is through prayer through through what we would normally be anxious about we instead of being anxious about it we just give it to god in prayer be anxious for for nothing but in everything through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to god and see if you do that the next verse says and the peace of god which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through christ jesus there is a connection between peace and rest in fact there's a very big connection between peace and rest now i i realize that the kind of prayer that's talking about is an act of faith letting go and giving something to god and actually letting go of it you know we're we're good at praying but but we keep hanging on do you know what i'm saying but like i'm praying about the situation but i i haven't i haven't let go of it yet like i've i've got this white knuckle grip on it which is really kind of the opposite of faith because see faith says okay i'm actually going to give this to someone who could do something about it i'm going to let go of this through prayer and i'm going to give this to god and now i don't have to worry about it because he's got it i don't have to be concerned about it because my god has it but see what do you do when you have a situation that is is heavy on your heart and it's one of those situations that you really don't know how to pray for what do you do in a situation like that well it still involves prayer but see we have this secret weapon it's so secret some of you don't even know about it we have this secret weapon it's called praying in the spirit praying with the spirit's help in our inability we lean into the the spirit in prayer now i want to read two verses i read a couple weeks ago but just kind of review for a moment romans chapter 8 verse 26 likewise the spirit also helps in our weaknesses our inabilities for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought but the spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered now he who searches the heart knows what the mind of the spirit is because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of god isn't that powerful now see in your notes praying in the spirit activates the grace of god to pray perfect prayers in any situation to pray according to the will of god these are prayers that go beyond our own agenda and beyond our rational understanding when you pray in the spirit divine insight enlightens your heart so that you can hit the mark when you pray every time isn't that amazing how many times have you had a burden to pray for someone and you really didn't know how to pray with your mind i mean you knew some of the things that were going on but you you knew that there was a lot you didn't know so you let your spirit pray by praying in tongues and after praying in tongues for a certain amount of time it was like this burden lifted off of you and you knew it was done or at least you've done all that you needed to do at that point in time you had prayed what needed to be prayed you had prayed beyond the level of your understanding and now you are not carrying that weight anymore in the peace of god which passes i understanding is starting to flood you i want to challenge you to try something every difficult area in your life it could be financial it could be relational it could be physical it could be one of your children or a close friend but those things that you carry in your heart those things where you really need god to show up especially those people that you carry in your heart just take some time every day and pray for them in the spirit because you are interceding for them beyond your own ability and you are praying the perfect will of god so when you think about them and would normally head into worry instead when you think about them pray in the spirit for that person or that situation and i believe that two things will happen number one the weight of those things will lift off of you because you are praying the perfect will of god for that situation or for that person and you will have peace and number two you're going to start seeing greater fruit from your prayer life now i want to shift gears a little bit today and talk about another aspect of praying in tongues or praying in the spirit you know paul unlocks an amazing understanding about tongues there there are many insights into this gift revealed here and i i really want to take some time this morning and look at them now it's going to feel like we are exegeting a whole lot of scripture today but i believe that you are going to walk away from this time together with a clearer understanding of things that may have been even confusing in the past and i am praying that you will be encouraged to use this secret weapon that god has given you through the praying of praying in tongues so first corinthians chapter 14. everybody just kind of stretch for a minute and just say whoa i wonder how long this is going to be there's there's a psalm that begins how long oh lord first corinthians 14 verse 1 pursue love and desire spiritual gifts but especially that you may prophesy pursue love let love be the underlying motive for everything that you do when you come together as a church now this is the first verse coming off of the love chapter chapter 13. first corinthians 12 is about the nine gifts of the holy spirit in their manifestations first corinthians 13 is about the the absolute necessity and importance of love and the need for love to be the underlying motive for all that we do first corinthians chapter 14 is about the proper understanding of tongues and interpretation and prophecy so he says pursue love go after it let love be the reason you do what you do otherwise you're just making noise in doing stuff and desire spiritual gifts now the word desire here is a strong word it means to be zealous for it implies an intensity it's not a whim it's not oh yeah it'd be nice to prophesy it's not that it's like an intensity like like a burning desire desire the gifts but especially that you may prophesy now we're going to find out why because prophecy edifies the church it encourages and strengthens the church but he is in no way minimizing the importance of tongues as we will see verse 2 for he who speaks in in a tongue does not speak to men but to god for no one understands him however in the spirit he speaks mysteries when you speak in tongues you are talking to god your spirit is talking to god in the spirit you are speaking mysteries divine secrets hidden or secret things now that that has no benefit or value to the church the rest of the church unless you can interpret those mysteries unless you give understanding to what you're saying now just a side note in the spirit he speaks mysteries talking about a person who speaks in tongues the word mysteries is musterion and and it means things that are hidden but not from everyone but but they're hidden for only a few it's like if you ever belong to an organization some organizations it's like there's certain things that you can't know like they're secret until you've been initiated into that organization and then those things are revealed to you god has hidden certain things from the wise of the world but he has chosen to reveal them to his children so paul ties this word musterion with wisdom in chapter 2 of this same book let me just read it but we speak the wisdom of god in a mystery this is first corinthians 2 7 mysterion the hidden wisdom which god ordained before the ages for our glory those who are mature enough to receive it we speak this wisdom to them we speak this the wisdom of god in a mystery the hidden wisdom of god paul ties this word mystery with hidden wisdom so let me remind us for he who speaks in a tongue in the spirit he speaks mustadion mysteries in the spirit he speaks hidden wisdom the very wisdom of god now let me ask you something wouldn't it be valuable to know what you are saying when you speak in tongues if you are speaking the hidden wisdom of god thank you that wasn't a rhetorical question thank you for responding verse 3. man we're whipping through this chapter aren't we but he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men this is the guideline for new testament prophecy it is to edify that is to build up it is to exhort that is to earnestly calm near and to comfort that is to encourage and console if you hear a prophetic word and it isn't any of those three things let go of it don't receive it this is the criteria for new testament prophecy verse 4 he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself but he who prophesies edifies the church just as prophecy edifies the church speaking in tongues edifies the believer or the one speaking you know in in the past i have understood this word edify to mean to to encourage or or build up to instruct or benefit or even the analogy of to charge like charging a battery you're like charging up your spirit man and that is all true but there is more to it than that and and i just have to tell you i i'm i don't know how i missed this years ago it also means to build a house to construct a building to build something to build up edify two latin words the word eddie is a word that that we get the word edifice from an edifice is a building especially one that's large or big in appearance when you pray in the spirit there is there is something being built around you there are constructs being formed pieces are coming together that they are being formed or framed you are building your house as the house of god now doesn't that make you just want to stop and pray in tongues right now so in this chapter to build up to build up like you're building something this chapter paul is not putting down speaking in tongues as we will see as we keep going he's talking about the context of speaking in the church in the gathering together and we're going to learn a lot about tongues in this chapter and by the way there is great value in self-education through speaking in tongues in fact being edified positions me to edify others being personally edified positions me to edify others or let me say it this way speaking in tongues privately prepares me and positions me to prophesy publicly now in verse 5 he says i wish you all spoke in tongues but even more that you prophesied for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues unless he interprets that the church may receive edification much of the context of the book of corinthians the context is when we are gathering together he addresses the lord's table he addresses many different things that they were doing as they came together and he was giving them correction and instruction so paul wants them all to speak with tongues but in the context of gathering together prophecy is better than tongues unless there is someone there that can interpret the tongues then it's equal to prophecy why because the church gets edified verse six but now brethren if i come to you speaking with tongues what shall i profit you unless i speak to you either by revelation by knowledge by prophesying or by teaching if i came to you speaking in a language that is foreign to you how could that possibly benefit you unless i can speak revelation and knowledge to you by prophesying or by by teaching you in a language that you know there is no value or benefit and then paul uses a comparison here that is i think interesting even things without life or or inanimate objects whether flute or or harp when they make a sound unless they make a distinction in the sounds how will it be known what is played or piped for for if the trumpet makes a certain sound who will prepare for battle if the trumpet if you hear a trumpet sound and you don't know the meaning of that sound it hasn't been translated into your understanding if you don't know that it's a call to battle you just hear noise and you don't respond you don't know what's being said you don't prepare for battle if someone rings a dinner bell but you don't know that that's what it is you just hear noise wow isn't that a nice sounding bell you don't know to come and eat and it's the same with tongues unless there is understanding it has no value in the corporate gathering it's just noise verse nine so likewise you unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand how will it be known what is spoken for you will be speaking into the air if no one understands what you are saying they can't receive what you are saying they can't benefit from what you are saying so it's like speaking into the air it has no value you're just making noise verse 10 there are it may be so many kinds of languages in the world and none of them is without significance therefore if i do not know the the meaning of the language i shall be a foreigner to him who speaks and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me that there are many many languages in the world today and none of them is without significance in the right context to the right people group that they make sense but everyone else nada nothing there is no benefit for someone to come to me speaking in a language i don't know even if they are sharing amazing revelation tongues apart from the gift of interpretation has no value in the gathering of the church because it's not understood that prophecy has great value it edifies the church tongues and interpretation has great value also because it edifies the church are you guys doing okay what was happening at the church at corinth people were operating in the gift of tongues but there was no interpretation taking place so the church was not being edified and paul was bringing correction here to this particular area just like earlier in the book he brings correction to the lord's table verse 12 even so you since you are zealous for spiritual gifts let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel as you are zealous for spiritual gifts by the way god is saying i want you to be zealous for spiritual gifts i want you to be zealous for these things it's like a burning passion in your heart as you are zealous for spiritual gifts that's a very good thing in your zealousness seek gifts to excel at edifying the church let your passion and your desire be to edify the church so this is what you need to do paul is about to give clear instructions here and this is amazing i hope you're ready for this here are the instructions now he does not say now don't speak in tongues what does he say well let's read it verse 13. therefore let him who speaks in tongues pray that he may interpret i i i want us to fully understand what is happening here if tongues and interpretation are as powerful as prophecy because they edify the church pray to interpret therefore let him who speaks in tongues pray that he may interpret now he is about to explain something powerful here verse 14. for if i pray in a tongue my spirit prays my spirit man is praying that's why that's why it's so right on and accurate your your spirit and the holy spirit are like together and you can pray with amazing accuracy from your spirit but he says but my understanding is unfruitful praying in the top praying in tongues is not my mind praying it is my spirit the only way i can have understanding is if i pray for interpretation therefore let him who prays in tongues speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret then their understanding will no longer be unfruitful verse 15 get ready what is the conclusion then what is the outcome then the new american standard says what will the result be of praying to be able to interpret this is the result this is what will happen i will sing with my spirit and i will sing with my understanding i will pray with my spirit and i will pray with my understanding i'm going to pray with my spirit and then i will do it with my understanding i'm going to sing with my spirit and then i want to sing with my understanding because god is giving me understanding of what i am praying or singing in the spirit i am able to pray and to sing with my understanding also isn't this amazing if you have a desire for a deeper understanding of god if you are hungry to have greater revelation god has given you a means to do that and it begins with your prayer language do you think that paul would encourage you to ask god to give you the ability to interpret your prayer language if god wasn't willing to do it every prayer i find in the bible that that is that that's what i'm praying i'm i because those are all the sanctioned prayers by god you have not because you asked not if i'm in a gathering of the saints there is no value in operating in the gift of tongues if i am not able to or somebody's not able to interpret it into a known language for the saints my spirit is communicating well with the spirit of god but no one knows what i am saying verse 16 otherwise if you bless with the spirit how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say amen at the giving of thanks since he does not understand what you say for you indeed give thanks well but the other is not edified well when i pray in tongues i am giving thanks well and the reason that that is true or the reason that that's important is this if i am praying in the spirit if i'm singing in the spirit i i am giving thanks well to god i am expressing thankfulness on a level that i i can't quite do in my in my from my mind does that make sense if i am just praying or singing with my spirit without the interpretation how can someone say amen if they don't understand what i'm saying amen means so be it how can they say so be it when they don't know what it is even though i may be giving thanks well they do not understand praying in the spirit is a really great way to express thankfulness to the lord now we're just about to look at verse 18. i want to bounce back to verse 2 just for a moment just to remind you of it verse 2 for he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to god for no one understands him however in the spirit he speaks mysteries so so if when i pray in tongues i am speaking mysteries that would mean when i interpret those mysteries are being revealed revelation and spiritual understanding is coming forth do you want to grow in revelation and spiritual understanding pray in tongues exercise your prayer language ask god to give you the ability to interpret paul said this verse 18 i thank my god i speak with tongues more than you all though he was bringing correction to the church at corinth about tongues about the proper use of tongues in the corporate gathering paul was a tongue talker he talked in tongues more than any of them should it surprise us that the apostle paul wrote 28 of the new testament he wrote over a quarter of the new testament well how could he because he talked in tongues more than the mall and he must have prayed to interpret and and he he amazing revelation that he walked in so paul says i thank my god i speak with tongues more than you all but then he brings us back into the focus of gathering together verse 19. yet in the church i would rather speak five words with my understanding that i may teach others also than ten thousand words in a tongue so paul talked in tongues more than the whole corinthian church yet when he was with them he spoke the revelation he received from god in a language that they could understand now this next verse is amazing brethren do not be children in understanding however in mountain behaves but in understanding be mature is challenging them to grow up in their understanding to become mature he is challenging them to grow in revelation and spiritual understanding in malice stay as a baby stay innocent like a babe in understanding become mature grow up well how are they going to grow up how are they going to grow in their understanding in their maturity he has just told us pray that they may interpret pray that you may interpret don't just speak mysteries in the spirit pray that you will be able to interpret that wisdom verse 21 are you guys okay is anybody od'd on bible yet or scriptures verse 21 in the law it is written with men over the tongues and other lips i will speak to this people and yet for all that they will not hear me says the lord this is the quote from isaiah 28 that brings this whole idea of rest and refreshing coming from speaking in tongues now earlier we tied together the word mysteries musterion and wisdom in first corinthians 2 7 that we speak the wisdom of god in a mystery the hidden wisdom which god ordained before the ages for our glory now i want to read that in context so i'm reading first corinthians 2 verses 6. just i just want you to stretch again for a minute how many looked up the reference for this psalm how long our lord anybody all right however we speak wisdom i'm in verse six of sec first corinthians two among those who are mature yet not the wisdom of this age nor the of the rulers of this age who are coming to nothing but we speak the wisdom of god in a mystery the hidden wisdom which god ordained before the ages for our glory which none of the rulers of this age knew for had they known they would not have crucified the lord of glory so paul says we speak wisdom among those who are mature not not worldly wisdom but godly wisdom we speak the wisdom of god in a mystery it is the hidden wisdom that is revealed to the mature it was ordained before the ages for our glory it was ordained that you and i receive and understand god's wisdom if satan and his cohorts had known about it if they had understood this hidden wisdom they would not have crucified the lord of glory they thought they were killing the one threatening their kingdom but when they crucified him they were actually fulfilling god's plan they were cooperating with god's plan to redeem mankind and it turned into a death blow to the kingdom of darkness verse 9 but as it is written eye has not seen nor ear heard nor entered into the hearts of man the things which god has prepared for those who love him now we've all heard that verse used at many a funeral service we just don't know the amazing things that god has for us we won't know until we get to heaven but that's not what it's saying at all you have to you just have to read one more verse but god has revealed them to us through his spirit the things eyes haven't seen the things ears haven't heard not the things which god has prepared for those who love him god has revealed them to us through his spirit for the spirit searches all things yes the deep things of god see the holy spirit searches the deep things of god if you need a better search engine than google i'll tell you who he is the holy spirit he is searching all things the deep things of god why plain and simple to reveal them to us to show them to us verse 11 for what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of man which is in him even so no one knows the things of god except the spirit of god just as your spirit knows deep things about you so the holy spirit knows the deep things about god he searches the deep things of god and god reveals them to us through his spirit now notice verse 12 now you have received not the spirit of the world but the spirit who is from god why that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by god god has given you his holy spirit he's actually your teacher he lives inside of you to guide you into all truth revelation and knowledge comes from the holy spirit paul prayed for the church at ephesus that they might have the spirit of wisdom and revelation that's the holy spirit god gives us his spirit so he so that we will know the things that he's freely given to us speaking in tongues brings the secrets of of god's spirit into our spirit and all i need now is the ability to interpret what my spirit is saying by speaking in tongues see our human spirit interacts with god's spirit and in this interaction secrets are shared the human spirit perceives the things of god the human spirit reaches into places that your mind can't go our human spirit grows in both its perception of god and spiritual understanding and wisdom and even the ability to to understand these things as our spirit grows an understanding of god's ways begins to filter into our understanding this is one of the ways revelation and spiritual understanding comes you know the picture i keep seeing is this the wisdom of god it's like deep within us the hidden wisdom the bible says this about jesus in colossians 2 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in jesus are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and jesus christ lives in us christ in us the hope of glory so how do i tap into that wisdom if i have the mind of christ how do i tap into it think of it like a deep well but how do i get what's in that well up here what is the bucket that i can use to go deep into that well so that i can bring those things up into my understanding so that i can drink from this so that i can satisfy my my thirst for wisdom and revelation that's a rhetorical question because i think you know where i'm going with this because i've already been there verse 13 these things we also speak wait a minute did i jump let me just check where i'm at here okay yeah i'm in in chapter 2 uh verse 13 of first corinthians these things we also speak not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the holy spirit teaches comparing spiritual things with spiritual but the natural man does not receive the things of the spirit of god for their foolishness to him nor can he know them because they are spiritually discerned that this wisdom we are talking about cannot be naturally understood it can't be analytically arrived at it is not a product of the mind it cannot be carnally discerned these things are spiritually discerned my spirit must be involved in this process of accessing this wisdom these mysteries verse 15 but he who is spiritual judges all things yet he himself is rightly judged by no one for he who has known the mind of christ for who has known the mind of christ that he may instruct him that we have the mind of christ you and i as born again believers have the mind of christ available to us so how do i tap into it how do i access what can only be spiritually discerned how can i access the wisdom of god as i'm walking and navigating through life information is food for my mind revelation is bread for my spirit information can block revelation because we think we already know something because we've analytically arrived at some place and and we think we know it but that can actually block us from receiving the revelation that god wants to give us the mind processes information the spirit processes revelation don't settle for information don't settle for the the wisdom of this age or the wisdom of the world go after revelation it is spiritually discerned it is a product of the spirit when you pray in tongues you are activating your spirit man you're activating that part of you should it surprise us that that understanding is becomes available to us because see the holy spirit what caused your spirit to come alive was the holy spirit coming inside of you and you were born again you came alive inside if christ in christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge now one thing you really need to understand is this god doesn't hide things to keep them from you he hides them for you to find he hides them so that you will pursue them in christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and he lives inside of us so it's learning how to tap into that now i'm just about done verse 13. i'm sorry not now i'm i'm i'm i'm back to where we were in first corinthians chapter 14 man i i i have got so much scripture i'm trying to share with you today i can't even remember where i'm at but i'm bouncing back to first corinthians chapter 14 verses 13 14 and 15. therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret for if i pray in a tongue my spirit prays but my understanding is is un unfruitful what is the conclusion then what is the outcome then what is the result of praying for interpretation i will pray with the spirit and i will pray with the understanding i will sing with the spirit and i will sing with the understanding proverbs 20 verse 5 last first just go ahead and shred your shoulders and said i may get out of here just that kind of that sigh proverbs 20 verse 5 counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water but a man of standing will draw it out counsel wisdom in the heart of a man is like deep water but a man of understanding knows how to draw it out it's like this wisdom is a well down inside of us so how do we tap into it how do we lower the bucket how do we draw the wisdom up into our understanding the way we drop the bucket to fetch this water of wisdom involves praying in the spirit and then praying for understanding praying in the spirit mysteries the secrets of god and then praying for the ability to understand what you're praying when you pray in the spirit you are activating your spirit you you are putting yourself in the spirit your spirit bypasses your flesh your soul your intellect and speaks mysteries by the spirit of god worship team come i'm just about done could you stand with me this morning i just want us to pray together this morning what can you put your hands on your heart today and just pray this with me father i thank you for saving me for inviting me into your family holy spirit thank you for living inside of me fill me baptize me i want all of you filling all of me in jesus name thank you for the ability to speak in tongues to speak mysteries divine secrets you are calling me to be mature [Music] in my understanding to grow in wisdom and revelation i pray for the ability to interpret what i'm saying in the spirit i pray for wisdom and revelation by the holy spirit in jesus name [Music] my father all of heaven wrote your name let this place erupt with praise can you hear it the sound of heaven touching earth the sound of heaven touching earth our father all of heaven wrote your name sing louder let this place erupt with praise can you hear it the sound of heaven the sound of heaven spirit breakouts break [Music] heaven come down spirit break out break our walls down spirit break heaven come down king jesus you're the name we lived in high your glory shaking up the earth and sky revival we want to see your kingdom here we want to see your kingdom here king jesus you're the name we're lived in high your glory shaking up the earth and sky revival we want to see your kingdom here we want to see your kingdom here spirit breakouts break our walls down [Music] spirit [Music] amen praise god i want to invite the prayer teams to come forward to be available if you need prayer for anything today there are people that will be here to pray with you the benediction while working not a church early you guys okay with that first thessalonians 5 23-24 now may the god of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our lord jesus christ he who calls you is faithful who also will do it god bless you saints have
