[Music] hey everyone welcome back to my channel I'm Claudia Dean and today I have the amazing Savannah here Savannah is from the roots Performing Arts Center in Brisbane today we have a really exciting video we're excited for this one our way so basically what's going to happen as you can see from the title it's a challenge and the challenge is we're going to see what technique looks better on Savannah the English style or the Russian style obviously I've just broken it down to English style and Russian style however under that bubble of course there's also American styles there too but for this challenge today we're just sort of generalizing it under those umbrellas so I'm really excited to do this we have a series of steps that we're going to show you and basically we're going to work out which ones suits Savannah the vest make sure you comment below what style you think Savannah suits in each of the steps too because I'll give you the opportunity to vote anyway I think let's just get straight into it don't forget to Like comment and subscribe and let's go so the first step that we're going to trial Savannah Artful we're tazed the hardest step in ballet so with Friday's obviously we have our English style which is typically Devon relevé and second go to retiro and turn then we've also got the Russian style which they go fondue in second then they beat to the back then beat to the front and again fondue second now when we're doing this please note that Savannah is used to the English style aren't you Savannah yes so that's what she's been practicing so how about we start off with that one first and then we'll switch the Russian one and we'll see which one you're better at so Savannah will go through a few little techniques here so if you can just fondue down Devon for me here so for your English style I want you to hit 90 degrees in this position and make sure the leg doesn't go below 90 otherwise you'll be dragged really forward so you want to go 90 degrees here then you're going to releve up to the side and second so go and rise for me that's it and then everything including your arms are going to come in that's it so you basically hit those three positions so one two three one two three that's it that's actually an amazing fuerte strengthening exercise - just practicing one two three so you can even do that in your spare time now shall we try some fuertes thinking of that technique first let's go for it [Music] son don't like it 90 [Music] [Music] but I think Savannah did pretty well here in Australia right now it's literally seven o'clock in the morning but yeah I think that was pretty good what we would want to eventually work on those savannah is getting you stronger in second because at the moment you've got quite a strong Devon but your releve into this position is a little bit weaker okay so that's something we're gonna work towards but now let's see if you can do the Russian style so what you're going to try and do here Savannah if you go out to second and put your arms into an Alonso position this way that's it okay now what's going to happen here is we're going to be back front that's it now when you decide to beat to the back here that's when I want your arms to come into first position go back front that's it then after your back front you're gonna go back out to second there go back front that's it that's it now I'll tell you one little tip here you know how you're leaning slightly this way something I really think you should focus on see your two hips just hold them here when you fondue out to the side you have to make sure that they're really on the left leg at the moment I can see is slightly traveling especially with that right one more that way so really make sure you stay on the supporting side there and one two and one two and that's it should we give it a go now with music [Music] ii ii ii ii ii ii yes ii so i thought she did very well you know what though i think that was probably about two in there that were the typical russian style but the rest were the english style so i'm gonna vote that the english style in fuertes suits you more so english so english style you win now Savannah's step number two is going to be basic permits from the corner so as you know obviously dances you would know - there's definitely two ways of taking off the turns or two typical ways and the most common ways one is two bent knees and I would say this is typically more the English style where you take off from two bent knees this way then exactly then the next style which I'd say is Russian Balanchine American were you actually straighten out your back leg yes they could be various Russian techniques that don't do that but I would say most commonly they do also dances before I go any further I just want to tell you that in my training years at the Royal Ballet School like back in my day the first year you would learn the Russian technique the second year you would learn the English style technique and the third year that actually lets you pick that's how it was back in my day so I've definitely had my fair share of learning you know the Russian style and practicing this in class and then I've also had my fair share of learning the typical English style I just wanted to let you all know that okay so Savannah let's try the English style first so we come up to the back now I think it's probably just best if we go from the corner like this chassé pas de bourree - bent knees that's it so basically here I was trained that you should have equal amounts of weight on both legs even in the English style some people do train to have all your weight forward but I actually think you're far better off being in between so you can use two feet down down down and then both feet going up into the Retiro so then you go up that's it then again chassé pas de bourree down down down lift up that's it how about we just do two from corner okay and you can try and do as many as you can two feet go up nice Jeffie go whoo they were good times weren't they Savannah so now if we now fast forward and if we go to the Russian technique or American balancing technique basically what you do here and this is going to be different arm wise for you to you prepare you take off with an Alonso position like this now if we want to go really Balanchine I think most of them they actually cross the arms like this yes I know I remember once I did a class at sa be so School of American Ballet which is the school linked to the New York City Ballet and at that time when I was at the Royal Ballet School I was so used to like bending two knees joining with the hands in like a really clean first and all of a sudden I was in this class with all those girls and they were all taking off like this and they were going like it was like what is going on I didn't know what to do so I remember I tried to do it I just looked silly but yeah some of them they actually cross the arms it's really yeah let's get to our preparation here says so you're going to have a straight back leg now there's also two other ways you could do this too you could either bend your back leg on the prac or you can typically keep it straight now also the arm savanna so when you're here this way as soon as you bend that back leg here I actually want you to take your arm to Anolon Joan second so go and then lift everything up so with the previous English style we didn't move our arms at all so we were just staying in third and then going typically straight in whereas now here we're doing and born that's it let's give this a go okay Hey whoo Wow so that's so interesting I actually think that the second Russian american-style I feel like that suits you a lot more what did it feel like for you easier how amazing because your weights more forward like this Wow so Savannah you're gonna get a kick for that side now the next technique we're going to try Savannah is shanae's so Shanae is typically in the English style you always keep your heels together and you're in first position but then I've also been taught as well doing fifth position I know one company the Paris Opera Ballet I know they always seem to do fifth position and I'm sure there's plenty more out there so let's do a battle of the shanae's in first or food okay let's go to the corner so in first position I always think it's best to remember the rhythm of one two one two one two so the right foot goes one two one two one two right left right left one two so from here if you're going is the first position you propel yourself off this left leg you launch yourself into the shehnai one two one two one two one two one two that's exactly right obviously though keeping our heels a little bit tighter there Savannah so let's give this one a go from the corner and we'll see how it goes go one two one two one two one two one two good if they looks good I'm intrigued to see now what the next style looks like though so let's go up to the corner what I would focus on here with fifth shanae's dancers watching in savannah is your back foot I feel as though your back foot the whole time needs to think about stepping more this way in order for you to keep that really crossed fifth position if you don't I have a feeling what's gonna happen it'll end up being quite wide and you'll start hanging out your back foot there so you don't want to allow it to do what it wants to do you want to try and force it to stay up in that corner so try and give that a go so launch yourself the same way now one two one two get it over there that's it yeah another thing that's interesting you know how we did the one-two one-two with our last technique on the one you're stepping purely in that direction on the - you're then flipping around but now on one you're gonna have to be really stubborn with that right foot and make sure it keeps stepping to that corner on two you're gonna think about the left foot stepping up to that corner like I just said so just give you an example you're gonna go corner one that corner two one two one two one two so each time I'm thinking one two one two give that a go one two one two one two feet closer closer closer yes so on your first one Savannah if you can just watch me how far is stepping out on one although we're stepping in that direction you still got to keep the tightness of the fifth so it's almost like a little baby step like this that's it yeah perhaps you could just think about moving your toes just just get the toes duck duck Duck Duck Duck Duck one two one two yeah that's it go that's good let's give it a go from the corner I know this is brand new for you but let's give it a try done good yeah very nice you know what's really interesting come closer here I actually think the fifth ones look neater on you did you all agree I actually think they look so much cleaner so I can understand why companies and schools teach that however I think at this point in time you're definitely more comfortable with the first so I'm probably going to give you points for the first one now Savannah the next technique we're going to talk about is on dude on turns now typically in ballet you can either do on dit on turns coming straight in or there's also the option where you can do on it on turns with the fuerte out to second dances then coming straight in now as we're doing a battle between English style and Russian style I feel so the English style more so suits the one where you just come straight in and the Russian styles we're gonna put that under the umbrella of you do a fuerte then come in obviously within that I feel as though doing a fuerte with or without for an underdone turn you could probably do that in either technique but I feel like typically they're probably categorized under those umbrellas okay so let's come back now I think we're gonna start off with the English one where it doesn't have a fuerte to second so we're just going to bring the legs straight in one thing I'm gonna get you to do though for the English style is I want you to place yourself here and make sure you still always show the elongate a second with your arm that's it and then back foot comes into a taro arms going to fifth that's it so from here we literally go second ball that's it that's perfect so let's just start this exercise we're going to go one down to a longe a fifth leg comes straight in that's it and then we'll go other side one down to a longe a fifth and down yeah and we'll try doubles for each and then after that we'll talk about the Russian style [Music] good and a that's okay now Savannah I feel to improve that one thing you've got to be doing is trying to almost on the second turn lift up the Retiro higher so you go and one lift a higher - hi - that's better I feel like that just gives you that extra little lift that you need there so just make sure you're doing that now the next style going to talk about is the Russian style dances so for this one if we're placed here one thing that I always train is that what you know when you do your along J like we just did that is exactly the moment where the leg goes to the for 10 seconds so we go and then everything comes up together on - yeah that's it so you almost go one two one two good if it's super coordinated I feel as though it should be super easy for you okay so let's give this a go now [Music] hey good this time got a fee egg whoo well done Savannah maybe you should be training in Russia okay that was amazing so it's very clear isn't it that the Russian style or the fuerte that suits Savannah much more doesn't it high-five good girl can you identify why you feel the fuerte works for you exactly I feel like it does too and I think as well the fuerte it actually helps coordinate everything one thing to remember though especially dancers that are watching if you feel like the Forte works for you I think a lot of people go wrong where they're actually a little bit lopsided in a second you've got to make sure that everything's just crystal clear and clean yeah perfect amazing so Savannah let's just do a quick talus we've got the English style and the Russian style now we started off with fuertes and you suited the English style then we did our normal turns and she suited the Russian style then we did the shanae's and I voted for the English style then you've just done the Onderon turns and she's suited the Russian style so this is the tiebreaker okay now we've got to now do grande jeté so this is definitely gonna be the deal breaker you've got grungy days that can be done two ways with flick or with a swish now I would typically say that the English style is swish and I would say the more Russian style would be flick it's a similar situation to the under dawn though I do think you can do both in both techniques however let's just put it under those umbrellas for now okay so Savannah do you have any idea which one you think you're going to be better at flick Oh we'll say the 6id I'm actually so excited okay what's your better leg left all right okay let's go to the left hand side so dancers I think you know the drill with this one so Savannah what's going to happen is you're going to start with your foot pointed out here now we're going to do gallop step we're going to start off with this Swiss shadow now I'm going to give you a few different tips to think about the swish first of all I've got to hear the swish before you even take off and you've got to be on your supporting leg like we sit around grand Allegro tutorial remember that yeah you've got to be on your supporting leg then you're going to take your two hips up lift up the back leg midair so think of like almost a Grom Batman and then land on your supporting leg again so you show on up on okay let's try it should we just literally do gallop step swish there swish there ya go good now I have a feeling for the swish one what happens is your body tends to go quite far forward so the flick one might suit you more because your chest bone goes straight up but I've got an idea how about my editor Simona what if she can actually put the Boatshed A's in slow-mo and we can do a bit of a comparison I think that could be really good okay so what we'll do is we put them in slow-mo after and we'll see which one's better so now the flick one let's go back now we're gonna point out the left foot what's gonna happen here we're gonna go gallop step now the biggest thing here is that your knee has to go almost in line with your shoulders that's what I always say in line with the shoulders and then your foot has to go even higher than that now I think let's do arms fit so you're gonna go gallop step me foot that's it and for this one too again you can think about Grom Batman with your back leg so it goes flying up should we try it let's go go boom yay I personally think that the flick wins don't you but let's do the comparison Simona insert it here now I never thought I'd say this but I think the Russian style it suits you more doesn't it that style just works for you but the thing is that I love both like I've trained in both I'm probably more used to the English one and you are too but weirdly enough you actually suit the other style better well but did you agree let me know if you all agree below and we'll see what people say so interesting but thank you so much for tuning into today's video everyone and we hope you loved it and of course like comment subscribe and we'll see you in my next one
