good day everyone hello and welcome back and if this is your first time here just welcome what we're climbing into while we got a break in the beautiful florida sunshine is a hyundai sonata and i believe this is a 2008 model customer states that the check engine lights on and the car will not go past 40 miles per hour so far i concur the check engine light is on right next to the odo meter at 187 940 miles well there's there problem right there the shift control storage accumulator has a bad uh latching mechanism okay problem solved we're done see you guys later okay back here in the parking lot raceway let's see if we can reach 40 miles per hour no way that would not be safe let's take this out on the road and see if we cannot duplicate their described symptoms whoa no wake zone we're just gonna go around that it's deeper than it looks ask me how i know okay it appears to be shifting okay we made it past 40 miles per hour with ease i wonder what the issue is let's get back to the shop bust out the scanning device and see what our check engine light trouble codes menu tells us look at that right there dad putting his kids on the school bus good job dad the world needs more of you that's awesome dads don't get enough credit these days well deserved credit at that all right we're still riding along here and i do not appear to have any drivability problems with this uh vehicular module it is not doing what the owner says it was doing and that was failing to accelerate past 40 miles per hour what's up time to look a little deeper parking is the auto scan tool powering on connecting initializing communication protocols satellites linking up in outer space evap system very small leak this will cause our problem accelerator position sensor one and two signal correlation and a p2110 limp home mode force limited rpms okay i believe them that it was not going past 40 miles per hour it appears that the signal generated by the accelerator pedal compared to the position of the throttle body did not match each other the pcm detected such things and it put it into a limp home mode which basically limits engine output in order to protect vital components such as transmission clutches etc etc so let's go into some data okay i have linked my scan tool up with satellites to the interwebs and it has located a technical service bulletin for these two specific trouble codes it appears that this card does meet the criteria that the bulletin falls under and i will paraphrase it is basically saying to check for heavy deposits at the throttle plate bore pin hinge locations which is right here and right here and it is stating that carbon and varnish can build up in those areas and cause the throttle plate to not actuate properly the instructions to repair this as per this bulletin is to turn engine off remove intake ducting and hoses remove the ect connector from the throttle bodies to disconnect everything gain access to the interior the throttle body and it's basically telling us to clean out all that smooth that's built up in there and by doing so we may free up the throttle plate so it can be actuated properly by the uh by the throttle body motor okey-doke so right down here is the throttle body assembly that's this guy here we need to remove this intake tube and gain some visual access to the throttle plates in there to see if they are carbon or varnished or clogged or restricted or binding now it appears that someone has recently been in here because they have managed to wipe away all the dust that was here by touching this component so let's go in and see what's going on that one's try ish [Music] come off please there we go let's see what we got in here yeah there's some some carbon build up around the perimeter of this throttle plate let's go ahead and run some cleaner through this just to make sure that this is not the problem and then we will uh we'll proceed from there what's in here yeah there's some decent build up on that i'm going to recommend that we run some cleaner through this to clean out all that carbon buildup and then we'll re-drive it or give it back to the customer and have them drive it to re-evaluate i think that's the smartest move so a lot of these throttle bodies have a coating around the bore on the inside and harsh chemicals such as brake parts cleaner can actually wash that coating away i don't think that this hyundai throttle body has that coating but i don't want to risk it with a solvent so what i'm going to use is just penetrating oil oils are a very very good cleaner and i'm just going to spray a dab on it and go in there with a shop towel and wipe away all the crud i know you can't see i can't really see either but what you can see right there it's just how effective a penetrating oil can be as a cleaner and i'm just going to keep going in spraying the towel and wiping this down [Applause] very good yeah look at all that that's nasty wipe me down and i'm paying particular attention to the area around the uh the hinge or the pin for the throttle plate i should say yeah look at that much better looking okay good okay next i've got a bottle of cleaner that i'm going to install in the fuel tank itself no weird okay maybe the key has to be on oh i'm dumb that's the trunk yeah there we go and i'm just going to install this bottle of cleaner straight into the fuel tank okay next up i'm going to install more cleaner and i'm going to run this through the intake stream as a mist through this uh delivery vessel the way this works is i hang this thing here like an iv bag put the cleaner inside of it install shop air so it's pressurized and then as i open the valve it will come out through this nozzle as a fine mist and then become ingested into the intake stream i'm gonna put the intake tubing back on and connect the nozzle up here i'll run the engine rpm up to about 12-1500 rpms that way there's good air flow moving through and it will collect that mist and then evenly distribute it throughout the intake each one of the runners the throttle body and over the intake valve fill it on up okay [Applause] now when i begin i want this valve in the off position that one under pressure for educational purposes i will release the mist just so we can see what's going on here there we go yeah that's all let's get this tube back on and let's fit the fitting i think it's gonna go let's try it like like so okay squeeze that bad boy in there that should be good okay now we must stop things the engine fire it up [Music] okay we need some throttle let's uh run this up to about 12 to 1500 ish and then and then i'll open up the valve for the cleaner and we'll start ingesting the mist okay very subtle throttle depression okay we're holding at 1400. yep there's our 1400 1300 ish rpm let's go ahead and open up the valve and when we open that we're going to see a slight drop in engine rpm and we just want that to hold and we'll open it until we see some activity here in the sight glass there we go ideally i want to keep that glass half full half empty and we're just going to let this hang out and ride for a little while as we speak that mist is being sprayed through carried into the intake and it is covering and coating any uh dirtied up or carbon surfaces surfaces take with carbon i should say it's going to help to break all that down a lot of that is inconsequential to our problem because our problem lies in the throttle body but it is also going to be passing over and around that throttle body to help clean that out as well okay this thing's been going for about five minutes let's throw some throttle actuation to it just so we can gulp up any of the cleaner that's hanging out in the [Music] intake all right we'll just let this go again as it continues to consume the mist and i'll set the throttle stop back to 13 1400 rpms ish not too much right right there okay the cleaner appears to be about done let's pull the throttle out throttle stop out and go check the sight glass okay looking good let's open the valve up yeah yeah she's empty okay powering down okay let's retrieve our uh our nozzle put that back on let's put this pcb hose back on i don't want to forget that that one tightening the clamps okay and another one way down [Music] okay let's go for a ride okay let's back this thing out and review some scan tool data before we go on a ride i need to make haste my boy needs to borrow this stall because he can't lift that big giant truck on on his rack so i'm gonna get out of the way team player status and whatnot okay let's go over here and check out our scan tool seatbelt i know click okay scanner show me what you're working with okay let's go ahead and clear the trouble codes now i understand there was an evap system leak code in there that is a secondary issue and not not their primary concern i will bring that up later and we can address that lights off we can address that if they want me to continue to diagnose that trouble code or that symptom uh but for right now i think the only thing we're really focusing on was that uh lack of power or or lip mode condition that the vehicle was in so i failed to mention earlier and probably should do so right now that when installing any kind of liquid or uh aerosolized liquid into an engine you have to make sure that it's done very very slowly but what you do not want to do is allow those liquids chemicals or cleaners etc to re-re-liquefy and form a puddle or a pool inside of the engine because should it ingest that liquid cleaner and that liquid makes its way into one of the combustion chambers that can actually hydrolock the engine and damage it now that we're on the road i'd like to apply a full range of throttle um full throttle if i can get to it safely today is not so much the day for nascaring hyundais around town just due to the weather and whatnot but ideally what you want to do is actuate the throttle and operate the engine all throughout its rpm band this is going to do a couple of things it's going to move the throttle plate to its full wide open throttle position it's going to allow it to close back to its idle position additionally it's going to help to draw in any residual cleaner that may be present and it's also going to help raise internal engine temperature in order to help break down any deposits that may also be left over after the cleaning process all as well so far it appears to be operating as designed okay while we're at this red light i'm just gonna pull up the uh engine data one more time and just verify that we do not have any pending trouble here we go here's one map sensor circuit out of range now i don't recall seeing this p0106 when we first uh scan tooled this thing at the beginning of the video i may have caused this to set so i'm just gonna circle back when i get to the shop and review this one more time and i'll i'll recheck all of my connections under the hood perhaps i i pulled one loose or something like that i don't think that i did but you never know sometimes things happen okay doing a recheck down here i forgot something and i need to unforget it okay clear codes again yes i am sure thank you okay shutting down powering back up and this p0106 map sensor slash barometric pressure sensor performance trouble code has reared its ugly head again all right let's move this back in some i'm going to go ahead and pull this map sensor out to inspect it uh it could be full of a carbon or buildup or something like that if it is i can clean it um if it's not or if the build up is terrible i may just order a new one so we're moving on to step two i thought i was done i was wrong i'm not done we have more work to do okay so right here this guy right down yonder that is the map sensor located just behind the throttle body assembly now map stands for manifold absolute pressure and it basically is there to measure intake manifold vacuum let's see if we can disconnect this guy without breaking it yes and it's going to be fastened in with one 10 millimeter 110mm bolt right right there reverse click don't drop my nuts come on out of there you ow come here it's coming out there it goes i'm not seeing any build up or anything on this looks physically okay but yeah i'm gonna go ahead and order order a replacement for this component right yeah okay time to order a new one okay while we wait for that sensor to show up i will take this opportunity to sell you some stickers through cleverly orchestrated product placement and then after that i'm going to go make some coffee link in description going for three okay still waiting on that sensor to show up for for this hyundai i'm going to move over and change gears real quick and check out this yeah this nissan here they complained of died while driving and uh stalling etc so we're gonna pull this one up real quick and just give it a preliminary walk through okay electronic throttle control function that will make it stall uh idle is too high evap system seen that before and cam position advanced okay and they put a new battery in it that may explain this battery current sensor code i want to focus on this let's go check out the throttle body on this one these 3.5 liters are notorious for needing throttle bodies but uh let's do a visual inspection on it first to see okay air box i wasn't even on coming with me hmm well that's not good that's not good at all look at that that's a defective filtration unit oh that'll make the throttle stay open i have found a physical obstruction oh no this engine has been eating its air filter wonder how much more has made its way in already that's not not good yeah there's some more back there okay well this may be an easy fix i'm gonna i'm just gonna have them replace this air filter and uh and re-drive it and see what's going on that's not cool at all okay so like i said this isn't really my car here i'm just kind of putting in my two cents on the matter but um i think well i'm very confident that i did find the problem there were some other latent trouble codes hanging out in this module or in the ecm but with an issue like this staring at us in the face i'm going to have the guys fix this up first and then go out and redrive the car that being said i have my own project over there to deal with so i'm going to go ahead and pass the word along with what i found here and get back to my task at hand okey-dokes i've had a delivery the new manifold pressure sensor has arrived it's uh let's get this thing installed and we'll we will reevaluate one more time let's get this guy in there it's easy access but it's also kind of difficult access click okay one bolt [Applause] good [Music] okay hold that guy back in we're good all right let's go drive this one more time now it took us two ignition cycles and two drive cycles two in order for that light to come back on for this code to set so immediately i'm just going to go ahead and clear it out yes light off yes and let's shut down [Music] i'll do a restart and i'm going to go ahead and relearn or reset all the adaptive functions regarding the throttle and before we go drive this to see if we get that fault again or if we are done so we're going to system test and i'm going to go down to i think it's configuration reset yeah there we go resetting adaptive values and it wants kion engine off let's do that key on okay yes i'm sure test complete key off restart ooh that was a long crank but okay uh it would be it doesn't have any uh any value stored okay codes are cleared again let's key it off all right that's one restart two restarts still no trouble codes okay so far so good after that barometric pressure sensor or uh manifold pressure sensor replacement we are not getting any trouble codes once we perform the reset procedure so i think for the time being this is in good shape uh this final test drive should uh should let me know if if we're good to go or if additional repairs are going to be required ultimately my goal here is to try to save these folks a buck or two in a situation like this it probably would have been easier uh less time consuming and more profitable to just go ahead and condemn that throttle body um basically everything that i've done today so far was to try to avoid replacing that component as of right now everybody's happy and it's uh it's all operating as designed i will do a few more restarts when i get back to the shop just to make sure we don't have an immediate reef failure and another series of trouble codes that are showing up and if that's the case the future of this repair is going to rest on what the customer wants to do and how much risk they're willing to take moving forward man my boy's putting in some work right here doing semi-truck tires okay let's review the data real quick and do a couple more restarts now that we're back and then i will uh i will report just to make sure we're all on the same page one more i know half this video is me turning the car off and turning the car on sorry sometimes that's what you got to do and for everybody in the comment section recommend starter okay we do not have any trouble codes that are pending we have repeated restarts without a fault i think we're in good shape okie dokes in order to avoid a premature release we're going to slow our roll a little bit and take some more time basically this car is going to stay here for the rest of the afternoon and i'm going to periodically do some rechecks on it and another test driver too just to just to make sure we don't release a car with a known problem i do believe for now this situation has been resolved but i want to be i want to be thorough and make sure that the fault does not present itself later on like right after they pick up the car so this is going to hang out in the parking lot for a little while i'll check back in later and uh we'll do one more test drive and one more restart and then i'll release the car back to the owner okey dokes it's uh been an hour or so and we're gonna go ahead and do a couple restarts on this just to see if we're getting that uh any of those codes back again so far no light so we're doing okay let's shut her down restart again and again no light okay let's go ahead and back this out i'm going to do a couple more rechecks on this i do believe we're good to go that being said i'm going to go ahead and close this video out right now as always i'd like to thank everybody here for watching my video i certainly do appreciate it i hope you found it informative and somewhat educational if you did find it to be either of those things please communicate that to me by tapping tab in our like button down below if you did not find it to be any of those things please feel free to communicate that constructively in the comments section also down below so one more time thank you guys for watching and before i go i have to remind myself to not forget to remind you guys to not forget to have yourselves a great day so everybody don't forget have a great day see you guys later i'll see you in a couple hours hyundai
