hello everybody good day to you welcome back if this is your first time here just welcome i'm glad you're here i know i'm glad to be here what we're working with today is a 2019 ford f 450 with a six seven turbine powered diesel v8 and a customer states there are some warning messages showing up on the dash while driving with reduced engine power that's a long crank hmm she doesn't want to start oh silly me it's like 70 degrees out we have to do the diesel cold start procedure on glow plug warming all right now let's see if she starts there we go sounds a little rough what's going on here yeah she doesn't sound very healthy all right okey-dokes we do have a service engine indicator warning that is illuminated let's go ahead and pull up the trouble codes and uh see what's going on with this thing from the notes that they left us they said that the warning indicator message that showed up on the uh the display here suggested something was wrong with the diesel particulate filter or the exhaust regeneration system so i'm going to go in and check those codes we're going to see if those correlate with what the customer had stated trouble codes are coming up all right we've kind of got a laundry list going on here uh first and foremost we've got fuel rail pressure or fuel rail system slash pressure too high on bank one not current low pressure fuel system pressure we've got misfires documented on cylinders one three seven two six five and four and a random so everybody's misfiring that long crank that it had when i first attempted to start it would uh indicate to me a possible fueling issue okay let's swing this around well i need to need to clear some of the some of the fog out of here i'm gonna wipe this down when i'm done with that i'll bring it over to my service stall and uh we'll take a look at the fuel system on this and see what kind of condition that the filters are in just idling up slightly i can feel a misfire several misfires possibly i've gone ahead and pulled up all the misfire logs and we're looking at misfires on every cylinder so far number four seems to be doing the best okay yeah one through eight all have registered misfires the diesel particulate filter regeneration procedure has probably failed to complete seeing as how this has a service engine indicator on if the dpf does not complete a regen the the filter will clog up with soot and it compound some of the issues that may be what's going on here because the owner slash customer did mention the message about something uh something involving the exhaust system they also said it had a reduced power message okie dokes so a quick wipe me down to the windshield and we can get out of this parking space let's head over to my tool area and we're going to roll around the dirt a little bit and take a look at the fuel filters on this i believe one of them is under the frame rail and then the secondary filter is up on the engine somewhere so obviously this truck is too big to fit inside so i'm gonna have to work on it kind of out in the parking lot okay yeah that's that's the second filter in the series it looks kind of aged it's tough to say when that thing could have been replaced all right so we're down here rolling around under this thing and i'm trying to find the uh the lift pump and filter assembly and i don't see it anywhere it's usually tucked around here on the driver's frame rail the uh the fuel tank is farther out back behind the axle let's go back there and see if we can find it all right so i have crawled along this uh frame rail all the way back i'm looking for the lift pump and i don't i don't see one anywhere i'm back here under the tank behind the rear wheel and i found the uh the primary filter cartridge it's this guy right here you're gonna pull these uh six bolts off and the bottom of this assembly drops out and inside there's a square shaped uh filter assembly uh first things first is i'm gonna pull these filters out and we're going to stick new ones in there and uh see if we get a change in uh and engine performance um we have no history on the maintenance records for this vehicle and fuel filters on a diesel are are extremely important to maintain and if not maintained we run in all sorts of problems so we're gonna start with the basics first uh once these are established to be known good filters we can move on if need be now i do believe there is a lift pump uh for this particular system which is gonna be i hope you guys can see it it's gonna be up here on top of the tank i think that that module there at the top of the tank is the uh low pressure fuel pump we will visit that component if need be uh after i get a good inspection on what these filters look like all right let's get out of here wow that was fun okay we're crawling back under this thing got a drain pan down here and the the new filters have arrived so we're gonna pull pull this cartridge assembly apart and uh change this first filter then we'll move up to the the front under the engine compartment and uh and get a hold of the second one let's get the connectors disconnected well that was easy now i'm afraid okay this is a drain valve so we can let all the fuel run out of the filter before unbolting it pulling the cap off that'll prevent me from cascading fuel all over myself ah it's splashing on me i spoke too soon i'll just put this drain pan up a little higher seeing as how there's no sense in sitting around watching a fluid drain i'll start to pull these bolts out where's the other one there's one see there's another one ah it's on my face going right in here i'll get that one far over there that way when some starts to spill it'll spill that way and not not this way [Music] oh here she goes all right splashing on me again i threw a towel in the drain pan just to help arrest the splashing okay that's good [Music] all right here goes nothing see if i can do this without getting uh soaked in diesel [Music] hmm did i miss one what is this here comes all right yeah it's this is a little dirty um oh this may not be our issue though it's uh this is cleaner than what i expected okay let's get out of here regardless of what the what i think this looks like i'm going to replace it as well as the other one up on the top and then we'll uh we'll go from there with the diagnostic process now this lid is going to get an o-ring or a seal and this is the replacement filter element protect your engine with motorcraft click all right let's go back in now i'm taking great care to not touch or contaminate this filter with any dirt and debris and i'm also i have not let it touch the ground there we go start a couple threads so i don't get noodle arm holding this thing up perfect and we will secure all the bolts for this cap [Music] excellent okay let's get out of here and uh go top side and get the secondary filter there oh yeah it's close quarters combat in here oh my flashlights i don't want to forget those come here that one's got a super good magnet it was a gift from a viewer okay let's uh let's climb up here and pull this other filter out oh i'm falling it's not good okay let's get these connections disconnected without breaking them i believe this line is the return line from the injectors this is the clip that breaks let's get that out good and i can't see the other end of this one it won't turn there we go [Music] excellent and then this guy rotates out don't make a liar out of me come on new filters going in yeah see that little tab on the bottom that locks it into the top of the housing there bottom of the housing there we go and then reverse procedure last one okay let's go key this thing on and prime it start it we'll see how she runs i uh i actually don't think we're gonna get an improvement out of it that filter on that the back side didn't look as bad as i was hoping for so we uh there may be more uh more to the story than what i assumed so far but we will see okay let's get this out of here and i'll collect my lights i told you that was a good magnet it's not real metal oh no i i kicked this and it shot the washer fluid out like a geyser and got me look at watch this oops i'm all wet all right ford show me what you're working with what we're gonna do is a couple key on events let it sit for a moment five seconds is good key off key on i'm gonna do this three or four times and what's to happen when i key this on is is it is powering the lift pump out back in the tank and that should be sending fuel through the system to prime it and remove all the air okay this is prime event number five let's go ahead and start things the engine no prime event number six no seven okay problem event number eight or nine or twelve let's come on start do it ah okay it's alive dude okay let's run the throttle up some maybe a thousand rpms that's where i believe i felt the misfire and we'll just run it up and hold it see what it does yep there's a misfire okay all right so i'm scrolling through the data and i'm down here under fuel pressure data now this is the fuel pressure at the fuel rails which supply the injectors with fuel and these pids are after the high pressure fuel pump so i've got a measured pressure of just over 11 000 psi and my desired slash commanded pressure is very similar just over 11 000 psi so this is telling me that uh post high pressure fuel pump is getting the pressure that it's the ecm is commanding and demanding for the injectors now i was uh looking earlier at injector balance rates and if we look here we are we're starting at number one the balance rates are kind of all over the board we've got positive 500 1600 negative 125 for cylinder three negative 1200 for uh cylinder four positive five negative eight negative four and cylinder eight is at zero okay yeah our uh our balance rates are way way off on this one uh it may be time to consider ordering a fuel system in a box i believe this thing's got a pump that is crapping out okay i caught something in the action or in the act here you guys hear that it's a very very noisy lift pump inside the tank okay yeah this thing's definitely being starved for fuel from the source we're going to pull this tank down and replace the lift pump let's key it off and uh do that again [Music] yeah this pump should not be making this much noise [Music] i mean i should be able to hear it but not not like that yes this is a deadlift pump okay diagnosis complete okay that's got to be ordered so i'm going to get this big behemoth out of the way okay let's get this thing parked and out of the way start oh come on okay it wasn't like that before you worked on it there she goes all right yep this uh that definitely confirms my suspicions so i'm gonna go let everybody know that we need to order a lift lift slash low pressure fuel pump i'll have to drop that fuel tank in the rear and uh then we can uh proceed with repairing said vehicle uh oh this trailer took my parking space okay warning do not do what i'm about to do uh i noticed when i was changing the uh the fuel filter out back in this truck that it didn't quite smell like diesel now i don't rely on smell too much because i had the rona a few months ago and my smell is not really uh back to what it should be so i took the old filter and i let one of the guys smell it and it doesn't exactly smell like diesel fuel so what i want to do real quick is see if this is in fact diesel fuel or i'm entertaining the possibility that somebody has put gasoline in the in the fuel tank of this truck and uh i may be selling the uh the estimation very very very short by just putting a lift pump in it now that being said i'm going to conduct a highly scientific testing procedure to determine the level of gasoline if there is any inside of the fuel system do not do what i'm about to do this is a highly dangerous and i may train professionals so some would say oh fire see what happens here uh oh yeah there is uh there's gasoline in the fuel system of this truck i'm also a fireman so uh they might have ruined a ten to twelve thousand dollar fuel system that would include all the injectors the lines the rails and the high pressure pump now knowing that that lift pump is bad i think what i'm gonna do is uh tell them to let's put the lift pump in it uh pull all all the old fuel out of it put new fuel in and we're gonna see if it's going to survive i doubt that it will there's a possibility that it will um if it doesn't help out the situation any we're no worse off than what we were when we started however this may be turning into a a ginormous repair so let's go report the bad news and see what they say and i'm keeping my evidence for now just in case i need oh that's great i spent 10 minutes looking for this and it was it was right there in front of me good job ray okay guys so here's the deal with this truck right here um seeing as how it's only 60 000 miles old and has a it's a 2019 oh look diesel fuel only the uh the customer wants to uh bother ford motor company to see if they will do some kind of warranty on this um i laughed when i heard this because warranty does not cover uh accidental damages or intentional damages uh or damages through neglect but uh he wants to bark up the warranty tree to see if he can get forward to uh to fix this up i know for a fact and we need that lift pump in the in the fuel tank because of all that grindy uh gurgling noises that was making um i know the tank is not empty he uh he said he just refilled the tank on this uh like a day or so ago and the the gauge says three quarters of a tank um but this really isn't my main concern my main concern is the high pressure side of the fuel system which is going to include the fuel rails high pressure pump all the injectors the lines the pressure senders etc um that stuff uh becomes damaged very quickly uh when exposed to gasoline or if gasoline is run through that system so um i'm confident that this truck is going to end up needing a high pressure pump with injectors and all the accoutrement that accompanies those uh however again we're going to bark up the ford tree first to uh to see if um if they're going to do something about the situation i don't think that they are but this is gonna remain in limbo until the the owner gets word back from the dealership about the situation so this is probably gonna be a part two because i'm gonna end up uh pulling this thing apart and fixing it up uh after he gets rejected by ford but uh that's not gonna happen today so my plan is is i'm gonna go ahead and end this video uh pending a follow-up that uh i'm about 90 sure is gonna happen um if i end up doing the work on the fuel system on this truck we can probably expect like three or four videos out of this because that's a that's a huge job and i'll make a whole series on that one you know i i read an email yesterday somebody suggested that um i do more diesel work and uh all i can say to that is ask and you shall receive well it looks like uh looks like y'all are gonna get your wish we're gonna do some more diesel work just not today so stay tuned i'm hoping uh i'm hoping i get the go-ahead on this one because i i kind of like doing fuel systems on uh six seven fords they're fun to me i don't know why uh but i enjoy them so that being said i'm gonna go ahead and close this one out like thank you guys all for watching this video i certainly appreciate it let me know what you thought about it in the comment section down below all that being said again thank you guys for watching and most importantly don't forget to have yourselves a great day see you guys later
