Eating 45 Year Old MRE US Coast Guard Survival Emergency Ration 1969-1970 Hersheys Tropical Bar

hey guys we got a really weird one this time it's a survival food ration from the Cold War era packed by Ash John corporation Brooklyn New York Ash John corporation I couldn't find anything on that company now maybe I should do a little more digging but in the meantime I really wanted to get this thing out there lifeboat and light wrath 5 component ration approved by US Coast Guard approval number one six zero zero two 6/3 3/0 high in energy calories and carbohydrates easily digested and assimilated says 5h a vitamin tablets nutritious supplement 12 malted milk tablets nourishing solids well-balanced and basic elements 8 ounce CC bars calories carbohydrates 8 ounces of fortified biscuits wholesome substantial sustaining funny wording and a 2 ounce in rich tropical chocolate nutritious and quick pickup contents and ingredients okay good look at that it says the same thing on the other side here's one interesting part souvenir of USS United States ocean liner huh weird but this one's in really good shape I did a review on one on Emory info and I actually got a little bit more information since then on the specific ration I believe this is a civilian ration a commercial grade commercial brand ration but it's packed with old actual US military components I know what's in here and this stuff like their Hershey's tropical bars now granted I may be maybe they were selling them on the commercial market back in the day at the same time as being used in US military rations but I'm not really sure and it was first developed for the military because Hershey's tropical bars of course are not like fruit flavored chocolate or something that's what I used to think when I was a kid no it's chocolate that is designed to withstand tropical climates and not melt so like hot climates and not melt I actually got an upcoming review of something that's kind of a prototype chocolate bar and extremely rare Hershey's desert bar they only gave out I think like a half mil any of these two soldiers which really sounds like a lot but it's not and there aren't many floating around anymore but that's another review this we're going to check this out right now I'm gonna crack it open with a p38 keeping it real yeah always have one on your keychain so yeah let's open this thing up see what we got let's check it out see if I can even get this around it yeah those corners are always the most difficult part pice look at that some chocolate melted on the inside of this thing look at that ooh smells kind of weird when it is chocolate that is chocolate all right for the heck of it isn't stuck in my teeth kind of tastes like a tootsie roll not bad that's pretty nasty well oh and I can't I can't turn back now ah all right now how the heck do I get this thing out here yeah that's not cool mmm while I'm eating this chocolate - like what kind of chocolate is this and like I remember this happened mean last time I open one of these you open from the bottom off it just gets worse and worse yeah oh man I miss my garbage can again okay all right come on oh it's like finally starting to work out a little sing is totally uncool all right so like I got a pry this out cuz otherwise it's just gonna yeah let's get this out with something Oh what oh yeah don't stop now all right maybe maybe this will do it it's getting there it's getting there all right cheese Hey look at more of this weird what's up with that big ol weird block chocolate makes no sense at all like yeah guys let's just add a huge block of weird tootsie roll chocolate at the bottom it's like one big massive Tootsie Roll soft too like one one of these days well man dude Singh is ridiculous oh man Mansley fingers small weird kind of slightly rancid and fruity smelling it's the only way I can describe that it's like it has this like sweet charlie old tootsie roll smell one millimeter at a time here all right here it comes yeah there we go right on leave that thing you know what I think I'm gonna do with this I'm going to eat some of it that's what I'm going to do all at work all right oh great round two of locked-in stuff this smells kind of good hey not bad yeah so like when you're starving it takes you literally all day to open these survival rations who died before you even get to the food what if you were like weak and hungry it smells that rancid and good at the same time sunshine brand biscuits here's oh yeah well these are a slightly newer addition and bloated and slightly like washed out I believe these are from the mid 60s early to mid 60s like 19 here find out all right so the tropical bar is from like I believe 1970 it's actually disappointing I thought this ration was older like now I'm eating stuff that's not as old I don't know why that bothers me yeah all right anyways let's let's get this mess all laid out and looking pretty all right now we've got that laid out let's start off with a biscuit why not start with what probably is the worst thing then again knows it just smells like the chocolate and then this thin cellophane bag I can't imagine these things not having a extreme permeation of smell see what we can do with this it's at least a 45 year old cracker let's check it out yeah okay still edible does it taste good not really it's bland hmm let's go for a jelly bar pork guns I really had to go through it when you got that survival Tropic for from me oh man that's poor guy mine were in better shape than that now these smell okay yeah there we go mmm oh man it's hard as a rock dude I almost broke my tooth on that all right uh I'm gonna keep the whole thing in my mouth for a minute and let it soften up sorry for talking with my mouth full here hmm whoo that thing sorry this is kind of gross but a little saying tastes awesome it's perfect except for being hard as a rock hmm okay still chewing hmm I like this hmm okay so that was awesome I ate the whole thing let's go for the nine so we've already had lemon let's go for this green block listen this heart is a rock this is like dangerous too on your teeth but you don't need an iron stomach to eat this thing that's for sure anybody could eat it mmm it's like a hard candy that gets soft so I taught my mouthful again see my bite marks it's like barely denting it dinga I'm going to send one to you too it's good for orange hmm not bad for like 45 to 55 year old jelly bars the orange was the best lemon and lime were kind of a tie they both I mean they all kind of have a slightly artificial and then a slightly natural set of flavors to it kind of like an orange lemon and lime oil extract or something but other than that it's like artificial flavors all right let's check out the her she's tropical bar oh boy look at that how the it's bloated and yeah this is gonna be a beaut can't even read the ingredients on the back really no gosh yeah I can already see that here let's just do it like this oh jeez look at this no way mmm doesn't smell very good all right see if this stood the test of time in any sort of shape or form or taste oh oh dude oh I just took a tiny bite it's just how it barely even resembles chocolate anymore I don't know if it ever really did aah oh why um oh god oh man why am I even trying to chase this Rob oh god I gotta have to sip of this all right one more bigger bite for the for the sake of all right I'm gonna do this just for all you viewers out there that like to watch me eat old food you sickos hmm oh man oh all right you know what that tasted like if you took chalk ground it up and mixed it with some MRE cocoa powder from like the late 70s and turn into a compressed food bar of sorts and and just like fed it to some poor unsuspecting victim and I don't know why but I'm going to take one more bite just to remind myself never to do this again hmm little tiny bite but Oh whimpers a wimpy bite on hmm all right Oh God mmm why why do I do this oh I got a flavor out my mouth girl oh no jeez I'm desperate oh wow mmm okay so like now we just gotta take this thing take it out in the kitchen mmm while I'm eating this side my mouth is full with lemon jelly bar all right it's fondue time let's make a fondue out of a big old 50 year old tootsie roll black thing let's rock it and roll it real quick look at I managed to like tear it open a little bit look at that thing it is like a big massive Tootsie Roll ooh yeah I decided to take it out of that pan because you know what I still fry up eggs in that pan sighs just I'm using my extra cooking pin and I broke the thing in half look at this stuff by the way right check it out it's like disgusting weird chocolate hard Tootsie Roll bread it's like it just doesn't even make any sense oh yeah it's like it's already sticking to the pan oh it smells awful that's not going to make a fondue wait let me like at least oil this pan ethyl olive oil can't fix actually olive oil a little water oil and water why did I just do that like oil on water all right look at this weird stuff actually I think that was the way to go I can kind of see it like breaking down a little bit now I'm cooking a massive Tootsie Roll from 50 years ago yeah I think this really takes the cake for weird so far I mean what are you gonna do right waste it man let's you know let's get our money's worth here all right so while that's heating I'll say this right off the bat right this stuff smells foul when you're cooking it oh god that's never gonna leave my mind what has been smelled cannot be unsmoked but it comes down to this there's just something about this man oh jeez look at that Martha Stewart yeah god it smells horrible it smells truly ah all right got a lipstick ah Oh what is that it's barely even rendering ah no this is stinking up my frigging kitchen no I just breathed it in and it's like yeah it's going all right one more look before I toss this failed experiment I mean there was no way I wasn't eating and stuff like regular look at that oh it smells just it smells like burnt rubber mixed with chocolate it's mad this stuff was never edible all right back to the studio all right no I was totally disgusting back in here and you know what I did stock photos and totally forgot to include this so I ruined the stock bonus so I'm still stuck with my old stock photos of this ration I'm an idiot oh well yeah like so this was a survival food ration lifeboat and life draft 5 component rash and a brew by the US Coast Guard US Coast Guard back in the 50s or 60s or whatever what this was whoever was running this I don't know how they allowed that big old massive Tootsie Roll thing to be added but I mean I guess for caloric density purposes it was useful and I'm I mean I don't know how much better it might have been 50 years ago but it was disgusting now I even ate a small piece of beginning the part that leaked on the bottom Mel what is wrong with me that jelly bars not bad yeah like I'm actually gonna send one of these to I'm sending it I don't know I'm gonna see he might want that thing who knows now I'm going to send it to him anyway I'll surprise and that'll be fun now these actually oh man that just smells like that chocolate it's just I can't get out of my head it's yeah you know when you smell something terrible and the smell just gets caught in your sinuses the Hershey's tropical bar I actually ate like almost half of around I can't quite figure out when this tropical bar wrapper was made but I think it was 1970 and with that being said this thing's probably 1970s it's only 45 years old anyways this is Steve 1989
