hi i'm pam hayes from hayes sewing machine company and today we're going to talk about how to quilt with your embroidery machine a lot of times we have smaller projects or placemats you need something quick you don't feel like boning up on your free motion quilting so let's let our embroidery machine help us now a couple things to be aware of is if you take a look here i am working with my quilt that i did last week this is the three yard quilt and i'm going to be focusing on the white sections for showing you how to do free motion quilting so what i did is i measured and it was seven inches so when i chose my quilt block my quilting design that was going to go into the block i made sure it was a little smaller to give myself a little bit of fudge factor it's going to be six inches that i'm going to be working with now the design that i worked with and yes ladies i sew like this at home too it's all piled up is this one right here it's done by pearly gates and it has different sizes so if you take a look um i believe it was down here we go up at the top it'll tell you the different sizes so this particular one goes from um basically six inches all the way up to eight so i chose the six inch size because again i want a little smaller and it has some absolutely gorgeous designs now this comes on a cd so what i did is i transferred my designs onto a usb stick and i put it onto my machine via usb stick now we have other designs these two are from dakota collectibles and all of these are available on our etsy's site and if you hit the link below it'll send you to our etsy site now a couple things that you need to be aware of you need to be aware of how big your hoop size is for your embroidery machine the pathfinder baby lock pathfinder that i'm working with today can go up to an 8 by 12 embroidery field so i have a pretty big hoop and remember it's going to have two parts so we're going to talk about that the important thing is it also has a grid and the grid or the template that comes with it's going to help us make it so it's nice and square and lined up in there so if you've never used this before and you think oh yeah that's in my drawer somewhere get it out this is where you're going to be using it now if the thought of doing it on something a piece was like i don't think so not for my first time they make quilt panels and this is the blue version and you can see how nice that is so you could definitely practice on your different blocks comes in a blue comes in red and this one's actually labeled embroidery panel so you'll see with this guy here you could do pillows i've done this made it into kind of like a tote bag you also see up at the top you're going to see here quilt labels so if your machine has the ability to do lettering which most do there you go now the batting that i like to work with in most of my samples is warm and natural or warm and white and this is a sample of warm and white what i love about the warm and natural or white is you can leave up to 10 inches not quilted which is nice because sometimes you don't want to for your first time have to quilt an entire you know twin size with your embroidery machine so be aware that you can skip up to 10 inches now if you're going into your stash and trying to work with some batting that way i want you to be very cognizant of on it it's packaged you'll see they'll tell you how far apart you can quilt this particular one is a polyfill project fleece so it's good for crib or craft size in other words it's a 45 by 60. this you have to quilt up to every four inches most people don't look at that and then what happens is when it's fine when you're quilting it then you go to wash it and you're wondering why is it kind of lumpy it's because it needed to have all of those you know every four inches caught so when you washed it nothing bad happened okay so be aware of that now we're going to try something a little different this week i'm going to use a gopro and i'm going to have it so you can actually see what i see all right here we go okay alrighty so what you're going to be looking at this is the block that we're going to be focusing on and like i was telling you it's 7 inches by 7 inches so our goal is we need to mark the center so what i do is i grab my rotary ruler and if you find that it's not quite the seven inches don't worry about it i don't think anybody's going to give you a ruler now we do have to do a little bit of math i am so sorry we're going to have to do a little bit of math so half of seven is three and a half inches you guys are awesome very good okay so on the ruler you'll see how we're coming down one two three and a half then i'm going to count over one two three and a half so we're going to put our line here and then there you go so at this point you should be the three and a half inches now at this point we're gonna go and we need to grab our hoop now remember for your hoop you're going to have the outside hoop which is going to attach to the machine you have your inner ring so it's going to fit inside and you'll see how it has the notch up at the top so make sure those are going to go together and then when you are working with your template can you see how it has the abc so that wants to be at the bottom so we can read it you don't want to flip it over so this is what you need to do so this is the order that is going to happen we're going to take the template and you're going to notice i have the center of the template in the center of that cross section now i'm a fan of again marking the with the plus i don't want to see you do just a dot dot is going to help you for center but it doesn't help you for rotation so you're always going to make sure a plus is better than a dot now at this point we need to put our hoop underneath okay so i put the big hoop and you can kind of feel it and i can you can feel it there right it's underneath but where do i place it it all depends on i want again the cross piece there so i'm just going to move my hoop down until i have it where i want it to be so i'm kind of feeling where the outside of the ring is okay where my hand is right there you can kind of see the shadow of it so i'm going to get it lined up and it's a bit fiddly don't worry about that so at this point we're gonna just move it around and that's looking pretty good now what i'm looking for you say well pam your crosshair isn't exactly lined up in the center not a problem because remember we have the ability to move the design in our machine what i'm looking for is can you see how everything is kind of straight everything's lined up equally we're not seeing anything that's doing that to us where it's really wonky that's what you're looking for you're looking for something that is even if it's off a little bit it's right on the money and it's parallel that's what you want to have all right so you're going to make sure the screw underneath that is holding your hoop together is all nice and then we're going to go over to the machine all right so now we're over at the machine so you'll see your screen will be there you'll notice i have my usb stick in i'm just going to touch the usb stick and then you'll see this has 22 pages worth of fun stuff you're going to notice they all look the same remember how i was saying with this particular design it had came in different sizes so when i touch see how it says five inches six inches you see how it's the same design just different sizes alrighty now because i have 22 pages on this usb stick what i did is i actually saved it within my machine which is a nice option especially if you know hey this is the one i want and you don't have to worry about you know fiddling with it too much i touch it and can you see it right there this is the saved in the memory of the machine so i touch it that's the design i was using and you're going to see where it is the six inch at this point i hit the word set once i hit the word set i can also if to show you you can hit embroidery and you're ready to to rumble it's going to tell you how many minutes and look at that only six six minutes to do that complicated of an embroidery pretty nice now the thread i have chosen to use obviously is not going to be this color but concealer is an embroidery thread so when you're working with this i have a rayon embroidery thread i have it in the bobbin as well as in the top of the machine all right so at this point this is how it's going to attach to the machine can you see the lever so what we're going to do is we're going to transfer the hoop and bring it over here alrighty so all right this is where you're going to take and you kind of lift up okay so see i'm lifting up all the bit of the piece and i'm going to slide it in and can you see where i'm looking right here put that puppy down now when i get all set you're going to see i'm going to have a picture that says the carriage is going to move and can you see the arrows on the screen so i take a look over here where my blue plus mark is i rotate the needle down a little bit and see how yep i'm not close not a problem so i go over to here hit the down arrow and then try it again so see how now i'm gonna go rotate not bad but i'm a little bit of a perfectionist so we're going to scoot it around until it's where i want it to be dead on the money for me remember i also have a three foot rule it looks good from three feet don't worry about it now i want you to make sure your quilt is not dragging can you see how i'm kind of fluffing it up a little bit i'm making sure that everything is not being pulled you want everything so it's nice and flat and make sure you have nothing underneath that will happen as well now at this point i have a red button i don't have my presser foot down that's why so we're gonna take lower the foot and then all of a sudden hey it's green but because i'm quilting i actually want to know where that bob bottom thread is so i'm going to do it take a stitch and then pull up my thread now if you need to you can raise the foot to do this okay so you see how i have the top and the bottom thread coming up it's gonna start over here [Music] so i'm gonna do a couple of stitching bits of stitching and i'm going to stop it i'm going to take my scissors and i'm going to trim those threads all right so now we're just going to go and i have slowed my machine down a little bit ladies the machine it can run a over a thousand stitches per minute so i'm at like 600 at this point and it still is only going to take six minutes to do this and you can see it's going to do all of my hard work for me all right you can see now that it is finished sewing everything is done now keep on going all the blocks that you want to work with go for it thank you for joining me while watching the video on how to quilt with your embroidery machine and next week because the overwhelming response to to loretta's ruler work she's gonna show you four more shapes see you then
