today's video is sponsored by black gold compost company i want to thank the good people over at black gold for the generous domain donation of all this beautiful black cow cow manure that we use in our video today and it's made a tremendous success in our garden i've been using black cow for uh many years ever since 1980 and it's always made a tremendous difference in my garden and i've been very pleased with our product i highly recommend it thank you black gold for sponsoring our channel well good morning friends i got a little pepper i want to introduce you to that you may want to try in your spring garden this year we'll be right back after the break [Music] well welcome back here you go i wanted to turn you on to a little pepper that you most of you probably have never heard of some of you probably have but it's called a data pepper d-a-t-i-l data these things are um commonly grown here in in our area about 45 minutes to an hour east of us over in a city called st augustine florida and they are so dialed in on these data peppers that they uh relate data peppers to to an area like st augustine you think of dado peppers just like you think of hawaii you think of pineapples they love their dado peppers i'm not real sure where these things originated from but saint augustine took claim to them they even have data pepper festivals over there i mean they they love these things there's a hot and there's a suite now the hot one is about it scores about a hundred thousand to three hundred thousand on a scofield heat unit so it's quite hot right up there with a habanero really and uh they have kind of a sweet taste to them as well as being very very hot now the ones we're going to grow today are the sweet data they're not hot at all and the reason i'm going to grow these is because my cousin makes a a data pepper sauce out of this stuff and it tastes fantastic on meatloaf so we want to grow her all she wants she wanted me to get her some so we're going to grow her a whole pile of them but anyway these are a cool little dado pepper the seeds are available i mean you can order them and these will grow pretty much everywhere just nobody ever really heard of them but they're very popular down here in florida so anyway we're going to grow these a day we're going to grow them in five gallon buckets make it real easy kind of fun to do so this would be something to be a good candidate for a balcony in your apartment or a very small area in your yard if you don't have much room to work with this is a good candidate so let's get started and get these things in the buckets and on the grow table so we can get us some pepper sauce dado pepper sauce on our meatloaf let's get started okay we're ready to get started i got the five gallon buckets i filled them up with my container mix and this is my homemade container mix so if you want to make some of this yourself nancy will put a link to a little video we have on our channel on how to make homemade container mix at home it's really nothing to it but that's that's how i'm doing it that's what i'm using in the buckets now for these um for these daddle peppers i'm going to be adding bone meal in this bucket right here to promote a lot of phosphorus to promote a lot of root growth as well as lots of blooms because i want plenty of blooms on these these peppers i'm also going to be adding in blood meal which adds a good source of organic nitrogen to promote nice healthy plants with lots of foliage it makes an overall happy plant so what i'm gonna do is put about three tablespoons in each of these buckets of each i'll water it in and let that water soak all the way down and then we'll take it to the next step so let me get started [Music] okay i got the buckets flooded give them about 15 minutes to soak and we'll take it to the next step okay our buckets are soaked they're looking good what i'm going to do is add some more container soil and bring it up till it's about an inch from the top of the rim of this dry container soil that i just made up okay got it about an inch from the top next thing i'm gonna do is i'm gonna punch me a hole in here and i use my hand and i go from the tip of my middle finger to the center of my palm and that's about the right depth and i pull me a hole and in that hole i'll put a couple more tablespoons of bone meal a couple more tablespoons of blood meal right in the hole then i take the pepper right in there i collapse the sides around it pack it in pretty tight until i got it down and then i'll add a little more container soil just to bring that level back up because it's going to sink again when we when we go over to the grow table to um water it again okay there we go i'm going to stick my little tag in there okay there we go let me get the rest of these in and we'll go over to the grow table and take it to the next step okay we got all our data peppers over here on the grow table and the next step i want to do is i'm going to take these bamboo canes and i'm going to take three of them and i'm going to insert them right around the stem of this dado pepper and i'm going to trap it right in there and the reason for that is is it's going to get some wind out here and the wind's going to knock them around and damage them and also as this little pepper matures it's going to get two and a half feet tall or so and i want to have it some support so it doesn't bend over and kink and ruin my plant so i always encourage putting in these bamboo steaks around your peppers just like that okay and the next thing you want to do is i like to take one of these little tomato cages i got these i think i got these at lowe's they're only about a dollar or so they're pretty cheap but anyway i take this as the plant has just been planted and that's when you want to add this right in there so the plant can mature and grow into the cage instead of trying to come back and put the cage on later after it's getting pretty big all you're going to do is tear up the plant but right there that tomat that pepper plant right there is ready to grow so let me get the rest of these done and i'll be right back well the last step is just lightly water these um these peppers in if you remember we pre-soaked the bottom 75 of these buckets were pre-soaked over there before i put the peppers in so the bottom 75 of the bucket's already wet so you don't really need a whole lot of watering when you get these things put in to finish them off they're pretty much set so here we go we got five beautiful little daddle sweet peppers installed on the grow rack ready to grow so we'll keep track of these all the way out until harvest so we'll be back very soon and we'll watch the progress of this together see you soon well hello friends our sweet dado peppers are really making some good progress i just wanted to share with you today how they're looking and if you take a look down the road you can see that they're really starting to put on some foliage now they're starting to get some traction because you know we had kind of a unseasonably cool spring here in florida this year so they were sluggish but we're starting to warm up now getting in some good um you know low 90s and they like the hot weather down here so they're starting to really come into their own i'm pretty proud of them so if you look real close up in here you can see they're starting to get some little tiny little buds coming out and really that's a good sign we'll be getting those things will open up and make their little bloom here in the next week or two and then after that they start to produce the fruit and at that point we'll come back and we'll check them out on a harvest so we'll be back shortly take a look at these in the days ahead and uh see how they're doing see you soon well our dado peppers are really putting on the greenies and they are looking beautiful they're just loaded if you look up close in here you can see that these things are just uh heavily laden with the the greenies and uh these things are producing and producing and producing i really like it now um some of these are just starting to turn you know the darker orange that we're looking for these green ones are okay to eat but the better they're better if you let them turn um you know change colors because that's much sweeter so let me get um let me get off a green one and uh one that's already starting to change colors just to show you what to look for and we'll be back in the days ahead when we can get this brush loaded with um with the colored ones and we'll we'll get a good harvest but right now i just wanted to show you what what they look like can you see this okay nancy yeah is it uh focused on it yep okay as you can see the this is the the green one this is the early and this is where it's just starting to mature see how it's changing to that orange or orangish color and they'll get a little bit darker than that as well but this is the one you want you want them to to be patient and let them get to the colored peppers right honey okay okay friends we got a couple of them just to show you what they look like they're loaded with greenies we'll be back in the days ahead and we'll show you a big old bow full of these when nancy uh comes out and gets a nice harvest of these and she'll make something out of it you know how she is so we'll be back in a few weeks well our dado peppers are finally ripened and they're making a beautiful display of the oranges and the reds and of course those are the ones you want so today we uh we're going to take some of our little teeny um a little small potatoes that we grew and get some of our home-grown carrots and home-grown onions and get us a little pot roast in the crock pot we're going to mix in some of these dado peppers with us so we need a small bowl full not a whole lot but we're ready ain't you all right let's get some let's see what they look like [Music] let's take a look at these things that is magnificent or what they make a hot version of this remember but these are the sweet ones [Music] [Music] ain't that enough for your yeah that's plenty that's enough okay there we go we got a little bowl of uh sweet dado peppers for uh for our meal tonight well i hope you enjoyed growing these little data peppers with us it's been a quite a journey and they really uh they really produce a beautiful pepper you know so we're going to be enjoying these tonight huh so anyway we thank you for watching i hope you enjoyed the video maybe gave you a uh idea on another pepper you may want to try in your spring garden this year so until me and nancy and bing bing see you next time always remember bias hands we are fed give us lord our daily bread amen have a blessed day [Music] you
