[Music] okay the people want us to cover earth so you know what that means we're gonna need a massive blanket but don't worry i got a blanket guy his name's daryl no stop we need a spaceship and this map has every spaceship store there is so what's the plan okay there's like five spaceship stores on this map we'll split up and at least one of them has to have one but what if they're closed or something roberta i've got five stores listed on this map at least one of them has to happen one hour later [Music] three hours later wait why is there a halloween store in december yeah the hours see the earth okay take off in 3 17 24 triangle is it going to make this noise the whole time probably but it has this little baby we're here wow that was quick to be honest the earth doesn't really look that big from here well even though the earth looks small it really isn't earth is actually the fifth largest planet what although it's smaller than the gas giants jupiter saturn uranus and neptune it's bigger than the terrestrial planets aka the rocky planets which include mercury venus earth and mars like the other rocky planets earth has many layers it starts over 1 800 miles beneath the earth's surface at the core the layer that creates the earth's magnetic field the core is broken down into two layers the inner core and the outer core the inner core is a dense hot ball made mostly of iron with a diameter over 1500 miles wide that's bigger than pluto not cool surrounding the inner core is the outer core a thick layer of burning hot liquid nickel and iron next is the mantle an incredibly thick layer of silicate rocks that makes up a whopping 84 of earth's total volume and last is the crust think of this part like the shell on an egg what in some places it's a little over three miles thick while in other places it's over 45 miles thick the crust is broken down into big pieces like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle these are known as tectonic plates and they play a large role in how earthquakes and volcanoes come to be check out mr dimeo's videos on those topics to hear more about that and all of these layers combine to make earth in total earth has a diameter of about 8 000 miles and if you were to travel around the earth at its equator it would equal close to 25 000 miles but even though it looks perfectly round it isn't earth is really what's called an ablate spheroid this is because its spin causes it to be squashed at its poles and swollen at the equator oh that's gross i don't want a squished earth i like my earths to be perfectly round same let's straighten this bad boy out wow that was totally scuga muggling what scuga what now skugamogely dude it means raichus whatever so earth we're actually from you right just righteous and we actually have a few questions right just right just so if you don't mind we'd like to just write just ask you something right just right just stop that we want to ask you some questions are you in or not job bro i'm totally pompanous sorry it means i'm in hey speaking of meaning what does the word earth even mean where did it come from i thought you'd never ask well i kind of figured he'd ask but i just wasn't sure when so i know what to say but okay here goes nothing the name earth is at least a thousand years old let's go out to dinner at three o'clock and comes from old english and german words meaning the ground while all the other planets in our solar system are named after greek or roman gods and goddesses earth is simply named after dirt but even though i'm named after dirt my water is what truly makes me unique about 71 of the earth is made of it that's equal to about 320 quintillion gallons wow and of all that water less than three percent is drinkable fresh water wow it's crazy to think that those 7.6 billion people on earth are all squished on such a small amount of land i wouldn't exactly call it small earth has about 58 million square miles of land that's nearly 14 times bigger than all the land on the moon wow i know effect too oh what fact do you know justin sweaters unend after their job to make you sweat wow righteous imagine if all clothes were named after what they do yeah and belts would be called pants holder uppers huh and gloves would be called finger warmers and socks would be called socks too electric boogaloo no nothing i'll go back inside wait a second go back to that moon stuff i know earth has one moon now but did it always have one moon well it's actually kind of weird that you say that but in order to understand we got to take a look at how our moon likely came to be if you visited the surface of the earth at its start you wouldn't recognize it experts believe it was a hot rocky surface with volcanoes and the beginning of a possible steamy atmosphere eventually a mars-sized body crashed into the earth wow over the course of a few hours this mini planet smashed deep into the earth sending shock waves throughout the globe and eventually melting all the rocks on its surface tons of debris was blasted into space and after a long time that debris cooled and collected in the form of a moon but some experts believe that the earth actually had two moons what they think that our two moons lived peacefully for about 80 million years but eventually the smaller moon crashed into the bigger one creating giant mountains on one side of our current moon wait a second before you mentioned earth at its start that got me thinking how old are you exactly experts believe i could be about 4.54 billion years old but they aren't exactly sure they estimate that they may be as much as 50 million years off 4.54 billion wow you look good for your age what's your secret oh i drink plenty of water and get lots of exercise exercise how do you do that by spinning at my equator i spin on my axis at over 1 000 miles per hour that's over 12 times faster than a cheetah and one spin on my axis is equal to 24 hours or one full day on average the earth is about 92 million miles from the sun and it takes my 365 days or one year to go around it that equals about 67 000 miles per hour that's nearly 838 times faster than a cheetah but perhaps the most fascinating thing about my relationship with the sun is my distance from it experts say i am in what is called the goldilocks zone this means that i'm the perfect distance from the sun for water to be here which means it's perfect for life if i was any closer the water would boil off and turn to steam if i was further it would freeze so rocky planets found in the goldilocks zone of their stars are more likely to have liquid water which is needed for life as we know it what about puppet life is water needed for that yeah that depends is there a dude's arm inside of your body controlling you and making your mouth move unfortunately yes then yeah you need water well what else is important for life on earth some tasty waves a cool breeze some dave matthews oh for real oh sorry one of the most humongously important things for life on earth is the atmosphere earth is the only planet in the solar system with an atmosphere that can sustain life this 300 mile thick blanket of gases not only contains the air that we breathe but also protects us from the blast of heat and radiation from the sun it warms the planet by day and cools it at night and is divided into five main layers the troposphere which is the part that we live in the stratosphere which is where the ozone layer is the mesosphere which is the coldest layer of the atmosphere the thermosphere which is the layer where the international space station is and last is the exosphere which is made of widely dispersed particles of hydrogen and helium you had to do it didn't you do
