Duchess of Cambridge: From Student to Royal

[Music] when we were first introduced to the duchess of cambridge he was a student at st andrews university this was where they met what was your first impression well i actually i think when when you said i actually went bright red when i met you and sort of scuttled off feeling very shy about about meeting you but um and actually when i wasn't there for for quite a bit of the time initially he wasn't there fresh as we can um so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other but we did become you know very close friends from quite early on at the time she was studying history of art and in the early stages of a relationship with william a world away from the life she leads today william who had of course grown up surrounded by media attention wanted to be sure the partner he chose understood the life that they would be entering into catherine earned his confidence you know her and her family i really want to make sure they they have the best sort of guidance and chance to see what life's been like or what life is like in the family and that's kind of almost why i had been waiting this long as i wanted to give her a chance to see him to back out if she needed to and after eight years of dating william finally popped the question [Applause] catherine middleton had grown up one of three children and by her own admission has an extremely close-knit family this was one of the things that attracted william to her knowing she had good solid family values she's got very very close family um and i get on really well with them and i'm very lucky they've been so supportive uh mike and carol have only been you know really sort of loving and caring and really fun and have been really welcoming towards me so i felt really part of the family catherine has brought her modern and friendly touch to the royal household while balancing the demands of life within the monarchy the duchess of cambridge has shown she can handle being the main attraction but at the same time focuses on her duties and patronages [Music] she has taken on a number of charitable causes and carved a path with some of her own passions she has welcomed three children with william and the family live in norfolk where the children go to school nothing can quite prepare a person for entering into one of the world's most famous families kate is juggling work family life and royal life with grace and elegance [Music] catherine and william are enjoying their ninth year of marriage and they are proving that they have built a solid foundation so that one day when william becomes king catherine will be beside him taking the british monarchy into a new era you
