[Music] hey everybody welcome back to covers and commentary and welcome back to another episode of drummer reacts now we've seen Chad Smith playing his interpretation of the Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars apparently that song that interpretation just kind of broke the internet I I had no idea and uh it was actually just recommended to me by a drum friend of mine but it helped me ReDiscover dro and you all really liked that and you all really wanted me to watch more and one of the ones that I saw when I was recording the one that the Chad Smith episode was one of I believe his name is Dirk furan the drummer for Mega Death playing his version of Mr bright side I've been really excited to listen to this so we're going to listen to it we're going to watch the whole thing this time because now I know to watch the whole thing but with that being said let's dive in and have a listen to his version of Mr bright [Music] side he would know please everybody he has no idea what it is I just have to say this is this is blowing my mind right now I'm so glad you don't know this song so glad you don't know this song put your gloves oh don't spoil it don't spoil it I can already tell that SS most my life I have been playing all sorts of metal musical listen to all kinds of different things like we listening to a lot of pop and raphip hop and electronic music nowadays I also listen to a lot of jazz and fusion rock and roll punk you name it you know all kinds of different things wise I do is at least somewhat Rock rated so as much as I have studied Jazz and enjoyed I don't feel like I'm ready to be in a jazz Trio so jazz is hard to play going to play me a jazz song I'm going to run away yeah we'll load up the track and yeah you ready let's do it all right so he's actually writing stuff down [Music] please yep 16 on the height yeah okay turn sinks into the [Music] sea so on [Music] your what is he writing I'm curious so when I did session drawing one of the things I used to do is I used to take down notes and it wasn't anything major what I used to do is depending on how the how the song sounded based on the scratch track or if I was just making a beat up on the Fly I would normally at least try to figure out like if there were any moments with the other instruments that would really stand out things that would help me kind of like you know if if for example like in in this song for example in um in Mr bright side I'm pretty sure the song ends like bum bum and it like ends on a three three note kind of like lingering sound or a lingering set of notes um so I would write down like ends on 3 in my notes so that I could glance over real quick and kind of see that and the benefit of Studio drumming or well session drumming like that especially since I was like the only session drummer who couldn't read music in the studio was that um I could go back and kind of refine it as it went but the first take I would have an idea of what was going to happen next so I'm curious what he's writing down [Music] here cuz if I knew how I was going to play it I would kind of WR in like if I was playing eth 16th quarters all [Music] that yeah so like for this I'd say you know a I would write down like B8 and then I would put however many bars I was going to play the eighth notes on the base for um or like you know snare on up b s Arrow up B that kind of stuff they were just not they were my own like sort of quick it does end on okay I was right but yeah so that was kind of how I would use it do you know that song no I don't but I now have the song structure okay I want to know what he wrote it's all blown out this is this is blowing my mind right now what I'm so glad you don't know this song no yeah I don't I yeah it's it's U I wouldn't even know what band it is to be honest so I have no idea before I don't know like something I might have heard before but it's on quarter so he's not figuring out to this band or know this band very well so I'm tell you what it is until the end so don't you know this might be fun for people to know so I this when I do session work in the studio which I've done developed a method to just you know when you listen to song the first time I want to see do count okay so his is not nearly as like slap Dash as mine his is much more refined his is much better I like the note epic chorus Fox based softer and he notes that he's got 4X two and yep and then he goes back into four he's got the End Bar noted with the repeat so he actually shows the repeating notes so yeah the Epic we're up at the top fourth line down he's got epic written he's got the repeats so it goes back so he knows to play basically the same structure of four twice he's got the ending notes marked at the very bottom with the three hits this is taking me way back this is taking me back back to like when I did session work this is awesome you know name the parts yeah I count the bars and then at least if anything you have a structure so in this case that's all you need since there's no drums I can make up my own which thank you guys very so yeah he's not marking the particularly he's not marking the drum Parts but he's marking the structure of the song Maybe read this perfectly but at least I'll have some idea of where I am and I have a few of the accents on there you know a few a few yeah and like the ending of the song and stuff I'm excited to try my gloves on for this oh he's got gloves and everything man I was wondering what he saying about the gloves in the opening I've never played with gloves I just I don't like it so he's already just not doing the drums at the start Kiss k now falling asleep [Music] [Music] wo this completely changes the tone for this song I'm going to go back to that opening again this totally changes the tone of that song so he just F got I got be down because I 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 so he starts on the very tail end of the of that bar in leading into the next bar to just do a nice soft little fill yeah so he's doing like so he's doing eights yeah so instead of 16 and E he's playing it way slower he's almost like at half time on the snare [Music] man my God I want to know what kit he's got as well obviously it's whatever yeah so he's got Evans heads oh we got a Minal kit this time I I'm partial M I like my I like my Sabian rude or my um is it Sabian I forget who does the rude series pisty does the rude series I like my pisy ruds but he's got he's got the minel uh I don't remember the I think these are the classics with the black accent rings around everything man that is so nice and mo he's got so it's mostly Classics on the like yeah the ride and his high hat or his pedal high hat isn't but his clutchless high hat over there that always open yeah oh he's even got the classics uh China but he's got a different China up on the high up on the far left Mr BR side interesting yeah so he marked where the yeah he marked where the continuation is that was that repeat part that he [Music] wrote yep back on half time oh [Music] man it's interesting that he oh they cut it they cut to the double pedal he's going to play something on double pedal I want to cut back here though to when he ends the verse [Music] so yeah so he he chose to go halftime on the verses which is interesting it's a very Rock way to do it and then for this part because he's getting into what would be considered sort of the second verse and a little more you want a little more energy on the second verse for some for some songs especially like metal or Rock so he's adding more accents to the snare drum so you can hear this like and the and the high hat of course [Music] yeah I love how his go-to for an all for an open hat is just the always open piece so that he can have his foot on the double base and he's got the proper double base two individual Bas [Music] DRS it's interesting that he chooses to go to the ride symbol for the lead into the chorus oh yes I love it double base Fillin between the Tom rundown hell yes yes o why is it such low res I need I need the HD quality give me give me the HD give me the HD there we go oh my God now I can see everything it's like I just put my glasses on oh ooh back to that [Music] please so he's he's doing I think that's either triplets that might be triplets on the TOs that is I think it's God it's so hard to tell but I think it's triplets on the toms with the inet filled in with double Bas so yeah it might be yeah yeah so triplets on the toms followed by the double bases which like I love the fact that of course of course Mega death's drum kit just the band for visuals on stage the drum kit they would use would be a straight double Bas drum kit I love it I want to see him just go straightly I want to see straight double base come on give us give us some AP let's go give us some double pedal oh he used the he used so that's something interesting so even for a first take he used the same or yeah I think that was the same or a similar fill pattern to what he used to open the song with so that's kind of a nice little bit of continuity considering this is his first take uh on this song that's awesome up [Music] my something similar I don't think he quite went that hard on the opening but some some similarities that brings you back to the opening come on give us some double base not just some accents yes come on little bit of there [Music] yes yes I love it I never thought I would hear hardcore double base in in Mr bright side I love it this is [Music] amazing oh my God once more [Music] yes I love all the guys in the studios they're like yes oh man I missed the ending missed the ending I said it the last time but man the ending is the hardest thing to get on the first try of a song like every time it is one of the hardest things to nail like if you can nail the ending of a song especially one that ends odd like this like get getting the ending of the kill with Chad Smith on three four timing was really hard I would expect like nobody to do that on their first try ending with this with Mr bright side like boom bo that three note ending like he wrote it down but the song just like has this nice melodic repetition to it that it's like you can get lost and obviously he did still what an amazing track holy crap what an amazing those three hits are coming somewhere I got a little side that thought what did I just say what did I just say you can get sidetracked you can I was like I those three hits are coming somewhere and yeah I was yeah I got a little sidetracked in my uh there's so much to listen to great man I love it clearly your chart worked one listen and one play through yeah I mean but that's the thing you know that that's like it's like I mean I compare it to to to the instrument like learning to pick up music quickly if you can do that if you can practice that it it can become a really useful tool if you want to be a you know do this as a job because a lot of times there's no time like when you do session work uh sometimes when I have really complex stuff because I get asked to do some really crazy sometimes I have to do like detailed charts you know and really work at it before in general what I've learned is that there's usually not as much time to prepare as you'd like to so if with the mindset of like never I'm just going to do the best I can do with with the time I have you know absolutely accurate good place to start do you want to hear the original yeah let's hear it what's this band tell me the band is The Killers okay heard of them yes the song is Mr bright side which is a classic and this is Ronnie vucci on drums and we are definitely sending him your version of this is so good go half times on the vers to play the original and maybe we can mash them all up all right sounds good Ronnie don't hate me I did my best I I think he'll dig it okay cool nice okay here's the original version this is with the drum part in there I love how he's got the dude in the Studio's got a muga [Music] shirt yeah man he really like hearing it again after his take his imp his interpretation of it was so unique and I love it [Music] yeah yeah yeah man badass I have to say I can see why it's a classic hearing it like now you know like the whole thing yeah it's a killer song I can Killer song Killer song you walked right into that yes I can totally see how that would like be rule on stage and how people would just AB great Dr absolutely very well you know very well balanced and uh yeah some I know I hit the crash can at the same time as him at one point I was like yeah I knew nice but uh no it was great great drumming yeah very balanced and very tasteful and feels in the right place and uh super cool yeah I love it man love it it's so good so yeah that was uh my my best shot here on here's a song for the first time courtesy of dro yeah I hope I didn't let you guys down too much I had fun doing this and uh this is something that you know again if you wanna if you want to have a gig playing an instrument it's a good idea to get really you know to get some kind of technique going for for you to to learn songs fast and at least get the basic hang of a song structure obviously for us drummers like having the song structure together which I royally screwed up in the end when the closing hits it's an important thing he's going to be on that for so long because like especially when you are going to the trouble of writing everything down and you miss it and you only have like one opportunity to nail it especially like if you perform live and you miss an ending to a song like that ruins your night even even as good Spirit as he is I guarantee he loves the fact like just coming from my experience I don't I I guarantee you it's going to just be a thing in the back of his head now like it's probably not going to ruin his day but like it's going to be in the back of his head now that he missed those last three notes he's going to stick with him for a little while because like he was saying drum structure structure for the song is very important for the drummer so the more opportunity the drummer gets to put the structure together and figure out exactly where everything goes and piece it all together the more the drummer has time to kind of like figure out everything that goes within that structure for their part cuz I mean the drummer kind of holds the band together on stage and you'd be amazed how much of a team sport it really is in the studio I mean it's still a team sport on stage when you're playing along with everybody else but like in the studio it's way more of a team sport when you're playing because everybody has to be on it everybody has to know what they're doing everybody has to have their parts nailed down but before all that happens youall have to figure out what those parts are to be with so that's a pretty big deal reading whatever whatever notes you take or you know here's the thing a lot of times they're not going to have time to memorize everything you have to learn so you need to have some kind of tricks you know I've even had charts on stage sometimes and you know not faor playing Lincoln Park there's so many good things in this channel Jonathan Sugarfoot muffin here's Lincoln Park oh man we got another song to do already I love it what a fantastic take I love it I love it I love it I love it holy crap you all weren't wrong this was absolutely one worth listening to if you have more recommendations leave them down below I have a long list and it's only
