foreign [Music] foreign [Music] peeps David here music Shad reaction Channel doing some reactions today filming a bunch of stuff and just let me announce that you should do some stuff please like subscribe hit the Bell icon for notifications leave comments I like your comments most of them the ones I don't like I just skip right over them and if you want to leave a tip there's a link down below leave a buck be great thank you for supporting the channel so I love this stuff here um this is when people hear a song for the first time drumeo has this that's a channel that's really just grown exponentially in the last whatever ten it's been like 10 years or so I don't know it's been a long time since drummy I'm a fan of the channel um everything drums is on that channel and they have some really great series and one of them is when drummers will hear a song for the very first time and they'll try to imagine what the part is or or anticipate what the part's supposed to be I don't know but it's their take on either what they would do or what they think should be done and we got Chad Smith here of Red Hot Chili Peppers who I'm a huge fan of and uh he and flee man what a Rhythm Section and um and certainly someone who has is a legend and the band is legendary we've been around for a really really really long time and uh they've stood the test of time and as a band they've really grown on me I can't say that I was always a fan not not not that I liked or disliked I just wasn't really that I just wasn't listening to their music that much but since I have a rock band program here in the studio for kids and I let them choose the music a lot of kids choose Red Hot Chili Peppers so I've learned a lot of their music and I am much more of a appreciator Than I Used to Be which I'm grateful for so let's check out we got 30 Seconds to Mars the song uh it's called The Kill and uh For the First Time The song is called the kill right yeah and uh is it called wait the song is called the kill and it's for the first time so yeah that's what it is okay so uh and we did a reaction to that song on this channel which actually got a buttload of views because I played some stuff on there that people enjoyed and you know sometimes that happens so anyway let's check it out let's see what Chad Smith has uh has to say and do here on this tune let's go do you know the song have you heard it what the [ __ ] was that [Music] [Applause] it's some kind of emo thing I don't know what the [ __ ] it is I feel violated do you want another pass no do difference or no okay no I nailed it oh man what do you got all right Dad how are you feeling are you scared so already I like that they're still giving a little preview of what's to come here and um you know just coming to the table a guy like Chad Smith who's had thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of hours in the studio and live on stage and just you know his ears and his response time his instincts are so well intact he's got so much vocabulary I I would imagine that he would would just take to a song like this and and and and and nail it in some form on the first try nervous why are you nervous what kind of music makes you uh terrified anything I don't know well uh you're in the right place because uh I wanted to do this video with you for a long time okay great so you guys do this thing where you play songs that that other that drummers don't know or or probably aren't familiar with isn't necessarily their style so to speak this was a hard one to prep for because you're uh you're a drum nerd and you know a lot of music so uh we have a few options so if you know the first one you gotta let me know no [ __ ] you I know and I'm playing it I don't know this one um drum nerd what's a drum nerd what's a music nerd nerd is yeah I wouldn't necessarily call Chad Smith a nerd but what it means is that he is so deep into everything drums drummers bands who have drummer great drummers that he uh idolizes or or or or or instance is inspired by drums themselves vintage drums newer drums snare drums all kinds of how to tune drums symbols everything about drums Chad Smith is a lifelong connoisseur expert and someone who really is curious and invest investigative investigative about these things and I love that and I can relate to it because I'm the same way with all the gear in my studio the amps the guitars the drums the key whatever I love gear and I love the art of what we do so here comes the music that I've probably never heard before and I'm gonna try to play along to it and and do my best uh take a good musical stab at it and and see if it can make sense out of it [Music] oh it's in three foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you so at first he was a little unsure of you don't imagine someone like Chad Smith even though he's at the top of his game in the upper echelon of of of of rock drummers it's cool to see that even he feels a little bit of insecurity at the beginning like oh God what if I screw this up or what if I think it's in three but it's actually really not in three or you know what if I screw this whole thing up and and it's he's just humility there that I that I really like and and then once he feels like he's grabbed on to the vibe of the song you see he just goes for it and his instincts you know you want to say they're right because they sound like what the that the drummer probably played on the track um is there right or wrong here I absolutely don't think so and he's playing something that actually really goes with the track and I'm imagining he's so used to getting inside the music the inside the that's all he wants to do is get inside the the song you know so let's see where he goes [Applause] [Music] right [Music] and he just I'm gonna pause a lot guys if you don't like pausing bail right now so and then he heard a little break in the track in in one of the parts and he knew it was going back to the verse or coming down to the uh no re-intro or something he just knew because he's done this so many times there's something about there's something about Talent absolutely but there's also something about having done something thousands and thousands and thousands of times that your instincts just take over and you and you you and you go with it and in this case he was right on the money and his time and his fills and yeah I'm interested to see what you guys huh [Music] yeah yeah look what he's doing here guys he's not playing it safe all right now what I love about that is his spirit is I'm gonna play the song but I'm also gonna be myself and I'm gonna interject my little my little fill my little fills my little tape my flavors my hi-hat stuff my snare stuff a couple fills I'm gonna spice it up and make it my own he could have just played time and played it safe but he didn't and I love that and I happen to love what he did because it's interesting to me it's fun it's it's um it's more like it's more like a Keith Moon mindset versus a Charlie Watts mindset you know you know different it's just different he's got great technique thank you right [Music] [Applause] [Music] and he's playing with the vocal like Keith Moon did he's playing if you hear he's listening to the vocal he's hearing the rhythm of the vocal and he's going with it he's accentuating it which I love when drummers do that jazz drummers do it Keith Moon did it I love when drummers play with the vocal play around the vocal accentuate the vocal Counterpoint with the vocal that's that's interesting and fun for me [Music] [Applause] [Music] he knows he's got it now ah ah okay on the bridge he knows instinctively he's got to do something a little different so he's doing a different uh pattern on the on the on the ride symbol he's doing something different with the toms he's he's breaking it up as a bridge should be there's something different about a bridge or something it's a different section that usually only happens once in a song and he's really taken advantage of it in real time you know and you know you can be um it is amazing what he's doing but it also on for a drummer of his caliber it's it's actually not unusual it's not I would expect on his level he would be able to do something like this and he's got such a he's got such a spirit and you can see he's in a med now he's in a meditative State at first he was scared a little scared and a little uh you know apprehension and now he's really settled into it and he's just in a Zone and he's going with the zone and he's he's you can feel how in it he is [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] with the vocal [Music] [Applause] all about the ride symbol right now all right so there's a breakdown here that he that he wasn't anticipating I think maybe he thought it was going to go further up but it comes out and he hears it and he just he goes with it I love this stuff you guys [Applause] all right uh let's adjust let's adjust look at that [Music] he just he's all about in a way we musicians are all in a Tradesman service position his job here is to take that guitar apart and accentuate it and go with it and and and and and and and and and play his part that's gonna the part that's gonna bring that out and he hears it and he goes with it and he's got it so great so cool and something that all musicians should really aspire to be able to do this that's this is The Benchmark here to be able to hear a song this is something that that we musicians unless you're really really pigeonholed in one style and that's what you do whatever we should aspire to be able to do this that should be our Benchmark I think [Music] yeah ah [Music] okay there he goes [Music] [Applause] [Music] and his time is so great [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know the thing is like also being all in with the music all the time like you're like you're in a like almost like you're in battle with with not at this you know right now he's with the guys in the band and they're all in it together and and he's just like we're all in we're gonna make it to the end no matter what happens Nothing's Gonna Stop this from being as great as it could be or as musical as it can be or as powerful or expressive as it can be it's like he broke a [ __ ] he threw a broke a drumstick no stopping you know when the when the guy when the musicians in this room when they when they when they make a mistake and they're like ah like no just you got to keep going you've got the music is the most important it's not you it's the music forget the drumstick that's done so drumstick breaks it's gone get another one play play keep going there's a lot of lessons in this guys oh [Music] look what did I do I love that [Music] the [ __ ] was that is that like My Chemical Romance or something that was actually a really good guess that was close it was pretty close yeah do you know the song have you heard it no it's some kind of emo thing I don't know what the [ __ ] it is what is that wait wait [Laughter] um does it matter what it is like like okay yeah you know from from purely a musical standpoint from just um it doesn't matter who it is it doesn't it doesn't matter literally at all it doesn't matter I don't know the uh the song is called the kill yeah and it is 30 Seconds to Mars ah Jared's been Jared Leto yes and it was his brother is the drummer yeah okay yeah so how was that um not as terrifying as he thought no I was like once I figured out it was in three I was like okay I can kind of play along to this it'd be interesting to hear what the actual insurance I'm sure it's not as busy as that well we'll we'll play the original uh before we do that do you want another pass do you want to is there anything no do different or no I love that all right no I [ __ ] nailed it hahaha you're like yeah right shaded chest we'll play you the original okay you can hear the part okay here it is that's fun that's just that is just that's they're so you know it's like there's so much to learn I actually was literally telling my wife this yesterday how blessed I am to be a musician like it's just the funnest it's the it's the most I can't imagine a more fun job than this you know and uh Chad Smith and I have very different lives we lit we're very very dip we have you know different totally different careers in music but the fact that I get to wake up every day and make a living as a musician to turn these amps and these drums and these basses and guitars and keyboards and whatever and work with musicians and produce and teach and whatever it's like it's such a joy it's such a Cree I mean the what he's feeling in that moment I know exactly what that feels like and I feel very very lucky fortunate to to have to have had thousands of those experiences in my life and uh you know do you I don't the thing that too I want to mention as well is that Chad Smith I don't think I don't believe that musicians deserve hero worship and I don't think they want to be worshiped I don't think they want this like these accolades that are so far above what any human being should should be awarded on on some kind of a Accolade level uh there's there's something I think that's missed when we worship musicians when we worship people for for being able to do something like this and you know I'll tell you something uh on Jazz gigs you can get to I I get I'm with people who sometimes I've never ever played with will call a tune and it'll be the most magical thing sometimes it's not but most of the time if you're playing with musicians who actually listen and are on a certain level you you can you're you can make magic with people you've never met before it's amazing it's such a great thing I'm so blessed [Music] now do they play the whole track now yeah he did some of that you know I wonder how much Shannon Leto loves Chad Smith and how much he learned from Chad Smith because Chad Smith clearly came long before Shannon Leto did and so maybe Chad Smith is a huge influence on him foreign [Music] [Applause] God the parts are so similar what they played I think that it's got you know I would just I would venture to Guess that that uh that Chad Smith is a huge influence on on Shannon [Music] I was cutting right see there's no wrong that's the thing [Music] great oh you got pretty close that wasn't bad and you know and but I'd like to just interject one more time there is no wrong there is no wrong here there's no right there's no right well we might have man no no no no that's fine you know I'm gonna call Jared I say you know if your brother gets sick man yeah you got a new gig yeah get a good flee to join you uh I don't think so oh okay well what I got a washer though yeah this looks like from a from a snare tension rod you must be a drummer that Brook is sticking that song 50 Seconds to Mars yes they feel violated [Laughter] sense of humor just it's great have you guys seen his Will Ferrell thing the drum on um on uh what's his name The Tonight Show yeah it's so good Jimmy Fallon awesome so I just played to this song that I didn't know and and it was it was fun because I love improvising and jamming to like new music and whatever it is and um they know this is not my normal wheelhouse this kind of thing but um you know just trying to listen to the what I think the arrangement's gonna be and where there's going reverse chorus and breakdowns and verses and try to play what's right but and thinking of it like Assassin session musician would right because when you step into in the studio at any given moment your job Could Be A B C or D or e or whatever and he knew in this jaw in this situation his job was to play to support the song in the in the most effective way that he could as while he was improvising or not had a lot of energy in that song so I just decided to inappropriate over overplay which is uh you know kind of fun but you know I love that so you guys can tell how much I love that I think I said all that I wanted to say but that made me you know I have a ton of respect for Chad Smith and I I his Parts in the Red Hot Chili Peppers songs are such a it's such a part of the sound you know without him in the band it would just it would be just a something very very very different and um I don't use the words good bad better or best but it would just be much much much different his flavor his energy his humor his personality his technique his chops his his uh his musical vocabulary and how he relates to the music comes through so shining through in those in in the chili peppers and I just have a ton of respect and I so what I'm trying to say is is that gave me another window into his just absolutely excellent musicianship and attitude and humility so I love that I love geromeo and uh I'm just glad to be I'm glad that Howie put that in front of me today hope you guys enjoyed my reaction have a wonderful musical day like subscribe Bell icon comments please leave comments on this I want to read them I want to hear what you guys have to say and um and if you if you enjoyed it support us by leaving a buck in the tip jar
