what's going on everybody I'm Matt from sp fishing TV here with Carl's bait and tackle I know you guys haven't seen me for a while and that's because I just got back from fishing the Continental 48 states but I'm stoked to be back and it's a perfect time to be out on the water and share a couple tips and tricks with you guys today so we're gonna be talking about fishing the NED rig and the drop shot I don't think I could be back at a more perfect time to talk about these two techniques than now because the water is ninety point nine degrees and it's probably about a hundred degrees out here today it's that time of year when the fish are deep they're lethargic they don't want to move very much and a perfect little finesse bait gets them to bite so before we get up and start fishing I want to talk to you guys about how I rigged both of these techniques up where I'm gonna fish them why I'm gonna fish them and show you some of the baits that I got off the shop Carl's to fish today so let's actually go into the baits first because we're gonna rig all these up but I want to talk about these things before we get into that so as far as our Ned rig goes we have the hard hat jigs dead bolt this is a 1/10 ounce net rig weight as far as weights go for fishing Ned rigs generally I'm gonna stay between 1/10 and 1/5 as a rule of thumb you always want to fish the lightest weight that you possibly can so if it's blowing 20 miles an hour and you're catching fish in 10 feet of water it's probably gonna be a little difficult to throw this 1/10 around so that's when you'll switch to a heavier weight but if you're in low wind conditions this thing will definitely get it done to go along with that drop shot we have and I've been waiting to throw these around the 10,000 fish psychoshy Bug bycatch go now this is a really interesting looking Ned rigged bait and I think it's gonna do really well those appendages at the end are just gonna give it a little more action the ticklers as some people like to call them they're super buoyant so they're gonna stand straight up when you put it on that hard hat jigs dead bolt and it's just gonna look perfect when it's in the water when you're dragging it over points or around docks or whatever it may be so as far as the drop shot goes we have two different baits we're gonna be throwing on that today one being the EXO swim three and a quarter inch Sun Gill and then we also have the 10,000 fish shimmer shad this is one of my favorite drop shot baits to throw around I think it makes the bait fish all over the country just phenomenally it has that piece of foil running down the middle which gives it like a bit of a crunchy action to it I don't know it's just something different since the first time I've thrown these they've done really well for me we're also gonna be rigging that up with a stick ease to OTT wacky rig and drop shot hook and I'll probably throw that around on a quarter-ounce drop shot weight let's get into the rigging side of the net rig and the drop shot real quick so the net rig and the drop shot both definitely fall into that finesse category I'm throwing them on six six to seven foot medium light to medium spinning rods I have 20 pound braided line and generally that's going to go to an eight pound to twelve pound fluorocarbon leader just depending on what kind of cover that I'm fishing so in open water situations I'm going to lean toward the lighter line that eight pound the thinner diameter I think it gets you a few more bites when you're in the stickier situations around standing timber or rocks or grass that's when I'll go for the ten or twelve but that perfect medium go with the 10 pound fluoro leader for my leader knot I use an alberto knot and it's super easy to tie it's sleek and it's super strong all you have to do is take a bite of the fluorocarbon line and then you're gonna run your braid through the loop wrap it up five times and then wrap it down five times put it back through the loop the way that it came in wet it up really good cinch it down and you'll be good to go [Music] [Music] so once you have that leader not tied on I'll give myself like eight to ten feet worth a liter and then obviously with the NED rig since it's going directly to the jig head you're just gonna tie whatever not you're most comfortable with directly onto the net rig rig up your sukoshi bug and then you're good to go but the drop shot just takes a little bit more so we're gonna start the day off fishing the drop shot just because I want to show you guys how to rig it up if you're not familiar it's super easy and it just takes an extra second to set it up we're gonna first take our stickies wacky rig and drop shot hook we're gonna tie a Palomar knot on the fluorocarbon leader but you want to leave a pretty long tag in so you can decide how far you want to put that weight down one other quick tip for you guys is after you're done tying that Palomar knot with the hook make sure you run the tag in through the eye of the hook so the hook point stands straight out so you can see right there when it's tied normally the hook point stands kind of straight down and that's not what you want and it's super easy to fix you literally just take that tag in stick it right through the eye of the hook and bingo good to go once you have your hook all set up all you have to do is take your drop shot weight slide it on get it rigged up and you're good and generally I'm gonna keep my drop shot tag in between like 4 and 18 inches it's just something you have to play around with out on the water and definitely check your graph to see if you can see the fish like a foot off the ground or if it's closer to 2 feet off the ground sometimes it does make a difference there you go that's the drop shot all rigged up and ready to roll so obviously a couple differences between the drop shot and the net rig one and the most obvious is that the drop shot is fished directly on the bottom because it is that jig head with the bait and it's just being dragged slowly and slowly hopped along the bottom whereas the drop shot is going to be anywhere from 4 inches to 18 inches off the bottom now a couple different places that I find the drop shot works better they're gonna be areas with you know six to eight inches of grass that's kind of sparse but the NED rigs getting stuck in that's where you'll give yourself about a 10 to 12 inch leader on that drop shot so that bait is sitting right over top of the grass and right in the fish's face but then you have the situations where say your fish in a small river or Creek and you know you have a pretty swift current that's where I'll actually pick up the NED rig over the drop shot just because I find that the drop shot gets tangled way more than the NED rig slowly being drifted down now there's really no wrong place to fish any of these baits personally I'll fish them just about anywhere I mean I'm not gonna flip a drop shot into like super tight heavy nasty cover but anywhere other than that I mean you're good to go points docks any kind of rock piles grass lines Bluff walls it's fair game and also both of these baits catch fish year-round I've caught fish on both of these rigs and every month of the year I do find that I picked them up a little bit more during the summer in the winter and I think that it's for the same reason and that's because the fish just are a little bit more lethargic they don't want to move as much in the winter or the summer like when the waters 40 degrees they don't want to swim up and down points to feed on bait and in the summer when it's 90 and a half they don't want to have to be swimming all over the place they want to be in their comfort zone they want baits just presented right in front of their face unless it's that feeding window and I personally think both of these are great techniques to get more bites and they produce now one thing you definitely have to keep in mind about fishing the drop shot and the net rig is that you want to fish them slow you need to be patient you just need to let those baits kind of do their thing now it's fine to give it some hops and little pops like in its place but you don't want to fish it too fast I personally fish both the drop shot in the net rig in a very similar manner I cast it out I let it fall on slack line until it hits the bottom I'll let it sit there for a little bit and then from there I'll start my retrieve just basically giving it really slow drags and little hops and with the drop shot you always want to make sure that you have bottom contact with the weight and you let the bait fall and then you slowly pop it up with some twitches of the rod and that weights always staying on the bottom a lot of times you'll just feel a bite on the slack line just like when it's falling back down slowly or when it's just sitting there with the NED rig I do the same things with the drop shot except once in a while I will try to hop that weight off the ground just to cause a little bit more bottom disturbance kind of stir up that stuff on the bottom and bring a little bit more attention to the bait so I'm fishing in an area with a ton of freaking bait everywhere I mean there's a ton thousands and thousands and thousands of shad this size so what I like to do in this situation is just spray that tail a little bit to help the fish kind of pick your bait we'll see if it makes a difference drop shotting drop bingo Oh God awesome there's a drop-shot fish for you guys on the 10,000 fish shimmer shad and I've just been fishing deep all day this fish probably came from about 15 to 20 feet of water and it's right out on a main lake point with a little bit of wood there you go pretty fish really long skinny but still good on take it are you guys we caught one on the drop shot with the shimmer shad now another really good option to throw on your drop shot is a paddle tail swim bait just like this like the XO swim and this one's actually on the smaller side it's three and a quarter inches so it's perfect for a drop shot and it also mimics the shad or small bluegill and bait fish that are in the lake since we've got one on the drop shot we're gonna switch and start throwing the NED rig around and something else I want to talk about real quick is that there are plenty days that I come out and I'm able to catch fish on both the drop shot and the net rig I think they both work hand in hand they're both really nice finesse baits and generally you're throwing really small profile baits on it and if you put it in front of a fish's face I think most of the time they'll eat either or but there are definitely some situations where the net rig works better than the drop shot or vice versa a couple of those times are going to be for me at least is when the water is dirty I feel a lot more confident throwing a net rig when the water is stained to dirty than a drop shot I think it's just going to stir up the bottom a little bit more I think it's going to bring more attention to the bait whereas the drop shot is you know six to 18 inches up that line and while your weight is on the bottom kind of stirring up the bottom the fish aren't gonna be able to see that bait when it's up above their head other times are when you're finding fish to be truly locked on the bottom and they're just really not wanting to move like they won't even come six inches up to eat that drop shot that's when the net rig comes into play and if you put it right in front of their face they just can't say no all right so there you go it's a little two and a half inch net rig bait it's extremely durable super stretchy and it's also really buoyant so this thing actually floats on the surface which is good that's what you want when you're throwing a net brick babe that's your Ned rig all rigged up and the reason you want a really buoyant bait to throw on this deadbolt so it stands straight up when you're working it back to the boat when it's on the bottom and that's just gonna mimic like a small bait fish or crawfish or whatever it may be just kind of hopping and getting dragged along the bottom so we threw the med rig on and we're gonna throw this around some of these points and drop-offs now one thing you got to keep in mind with the Ned rig is you're throwing it on a light weight and again like I was saying earlier I'll throw it on the 10th ounce weight up to the fifth ounce weight just depending on the lightest I can get away with so while I am fishing pretty deep I really do like that super slow fall because I feel like any suspended fish that see this thing will just eat it right up and the wind is not too heavy so I'm throwing it on the 10th ounce dead bolt right now and you just want to move it so slow pick your rod tip up just a little bit you can hop it and then just let it sit so letting this baits it is one of the most deadly parts of the NED rig when it's down there it's just standing straight up and down and any fish that are looking at it or close by or they can see it will definitely come over and at least check it out and most of the time they're going to eat it so just make sure you move that thing really slow just crawl it along the bottom and if you can find any sort of cover just hop it around any sort of rocks or wood and then just let it sit and a lot of times if there's fish there they will eat it oh yeah Ned rig on the point well back side of that windy point to is perfect oh yeah oh man here we go that's the NED rigged fish do you think that he wanted that thing I think he did all right well there we go that's our Ned rigged fish just like the drop shot just let it sink to the bottom crushed it see you squeek was literally turning my camera on them this one aid it's how long it was sitting down there little tiny guys but that's the beauty of the NED rig it catches all wow it is freaking hot out here boys well that's what we're gonna end this one off I really hope you guys enjoyed this video on net rigs and drop shots and if you take some of the tips that I gave you today I promise you that if you get out on the water this summer you will definitely get more bites make sure you hit that subscribe button on Carl's YouTube channel and I'll see you guys on the next one [Music]
