there's is that a fish i think that's oh it's a gosh dang fish oh yeah oh yeah let's power pull down how's it going everybody welcome back to the channel mystery tackle box has entrusted me today to talk to you guys about crankbaits and some of the top mistakes that anglers make when throwing crankbaits like this uh 1.5 size squarebill right here so my whole goal with this video is going to be explaining to y'all the best ways that i found to work three different types of crankbaits and of course the mistakes to avoid along the way my name is tyler anderson and let's learn something today how's it going everybody and welcome back to the channel my name is tyler anderson and i have the pleasure of hopping on this channel every once in a while to give you guys some bass fishing knowledge and if you're not familiar with my channel tyler's real fishing i'm making my goal on my channel to help you guys become better bass anglers three times a week monday thursday and saturday so if you all are ever in the mood for some more instructional bass fishing content head over to my channel called tyler's real fishing or trf for short uh but without further ado let's hop into today's content crank crankbaits crankbaits i've got a love hate relationship with crankbaits on one hand i feel like they should catch fish all the time and sometimes they just don't but there's other times on the other hand when crankbaits just outperform everything else this video is going to be focused on the mistakes that i see anglers make when throwing these three distinct styles of crankbaits the square bow crankbait the medium diving and the lipless crankbait so buckle in grab a pen and paper because we're going to have a ton of tips coming at you guys rapid fire now before we get into these specific mistakes i think people make with these three crankbaits i have two general crankbait tips the first of which being i think people make the mistake of throwing a crankbait on too heavy of a rod and the second of which being people throw a crankbait on too heavy of line and let me explain why those are mistakes a crankbait is a treble hooked lure which means it has two hooks on it that each have three hooks on the hook themselves so you have six potential places to hook a bass oftentimes on a crankbait you're gonna hook them in multiple places and ideally the fish eats it well enough that it gets both the hooks in its mouth and so with the crankbait being a moving bait oftentimes fish will hit that bait and take off in the opposite direction which will cause your rod to load up very very quickly and so first off if you're throwing too heavy of an action of a rod medium heavy heavy extra heavy you are not going to be able to properly set the hook into those fish because that fish is going to eat the crank bait and that rod is too stiff it's going to pull these tiny little treble hooks usually a thinner diameter than let's say a texas rig hook or a jig hook where you can use a medium heavy or a heavy those rod actions i would just highly recommend you not throw those for a crankbait a medium or medium light is in my experience the best when it comes to throwing a crankbait and tying that right along with the mistake that people make of throwing too heavy of line crankbaits are designed to go a certain depth into the water so like this squarebill crankbait here the kvd 1.5 this designed to go anywhere from two to four and a half feet of water if you're throwing this on six pound fluorocarbon it's gonna dive quite a bit deeper than that it's gonna dive to six seven feet of water and if you're throwing it on twenty pound fluorocarbon 45 you know 55 65 pound braid it's only gonna dive to like a foot and a half maybe two foot of water so in order to get the crankbait down to where it's supposed to go you should throw the proper line size and in my experience i don't throw any crankbaits on anything other than 10 or 12 pound fluorocarbon i just feel like fluorocarbon is the best line it casts really well and it only has a little bit of stretch to allow those fish to load up on it and of course it is clear as well so no matter what type of crankbait you are throwing make sure you guys are throwing it on a medium or medium light rod i prefer to throw it lengthwise anywhere from six seven to seven two uh and of course all this stuff will be linked below on carl's bait and tackle so now that we've covered two generic mistakes i think people make when throwing a crankbait let's talk about the first crankbait being the squarebill [Music] so when it comes to the squarebill crankbait the number one mistake that i think people make when throwing this thing is they do not throw it shallow enough the square bill is designed to deflect off of the bottom whatever cover and structure you got down there i don't care if it's rocks wood grass the square bill is designed to hit the bottom i made this mistake way too many times when i was first bass fishing i would throw a square bill shallow but wouldn't actually hit the bottom i would throw it in four five six foot of water it would not hit the bottom you got to get it up there in that one to three foot range for in my experience the majority of your cast because i believe that is where the true strike zone of this lure is in that one to three foot so right now i'm sitting in 4.6 i'm casting up onto a super shallow flat up here it's anywhere from six inches to three foot up there and my bait is staying in the strike zone the entire time there's not a single point where my lure is not bouncing across the bottom and are there going to be times when you catch a square bill fish in open water yes i'm just saying the square bill is designed to be thrown in shallow water so stop throwing it deep it's meant to go shallow so with the squarable out of the way let's talk about the medium diving crankbait [Music] this style of crankbait is really the deepest i think most anglers should go unless you are getting into the the tournaments the hardcore bass fishing from a bass boat sort of scenario i don't think throwing a 4xd 5xd6xd is good for a lot of you guys that fish or or small bodies of water in a kayak i tend to think that for most anglers the 3xd is probably the deepest that you guys need to go but it's still classified as a medium diving crankbait even though 12 feet might be deep to some people but the one tip that i have again for the medium diving crankbait is that people oftentimes retrieve it too fast you must slow down your retrieve with the medium diving crankbait now i cast it out there i'm always going to reel it fast to get the crankbait down to the desired depth and as soon as it gets down there almost all the time i'm going to slow roll it just like this because one misconception i think people have is that if you reel your crankbait slower it's not going to get as far down it's not going to get maximum diving depth but that's just not true if your crankbait gets down there you can figure out how fast you have to reel in order to keep your crankbait there in the strike zone in the max depth it can go for the majority of the cast and once you figure that out and that speed is actually going to be a lot slower than you would think i've tested it out in plenty of clear water situations and pools and i found that you can actually keep that crankbait down there on a very very slow speed and i just think that the fish that are eating these medium deep diving crank baits are not the ones that are uh that are super aggressive and chasing like the ones that are feeding on a lipless crankbait or a square bill i think most of these fish are are wanting to kind of stalk a little bit more and that's where that slower retrieve once it gets down there comes into play it also allows you to slow retrieve to really what's called worm that crankbait so oh i just felt it there felt a stick and i was able to kind of like pause my retrieve let that crankbait float over the stick and then begin the retrieve again if you are cranking it in like this super fast you're going to get your crankbait wedged in so many sticks and rocks it ain't even funny so that is the tip that i have for the medium diving crankbaits keep it low and slow let's talk about lipless crankbaits [Music] last but certainly not least when it comes to the lipless crankbait i have a very important tip for you guys as well and i made the mistake so often and i offer honestly i still make the mistake of not throwing it deep enough so just like the squarebill crankbait you don't throw it shallow enough i found that most people do not utilize the uh the lipless crankbait as deep as it can be utilized because it doesn't have a bill and because it sinks of course you can throw it anywhere you want but i feel like most people still just utilize a lipless in the kind of shallow diving you know square bill situation but where it's really really effective in my opinion is on the yo-yo and so what i do is i'll cast it deep out there i'll let it sink all the way to the bottom and then i will well i got a tree there we go i will rip it off the bottom and let it sink kind of give it a rip off the bottom like that and let it sink back down and of course you can do this off the bottom you can let it sink all over the bottom and slow roll it back but i mean i've caught fish yo-yoing a lipless crankbait in 20 to 40 feet of water before and that is something that a whole lot of people definitely don't do so again scribble crank bait fish is shallower medium diving crank bait fish is slower let this crank bait fish it deeper and i think applying all three of those tips you're going to find yourself catching a lot more crankbait bass than you ever have before well that is all that i have for you guys hopefully you enjoyed if you guys are not subscribed to this channel hit that subscribe button because we got tons of content coming all the time and on my channel i've got three videos a week like i said monday thursday and saturday teaching you guys how to become better bass anglers with of course some awesome fish catches and some great production value so we'll see y'all next time
