Having your UI set up properly is pretty key to getting the most out of World of Warcraft. Blizzard's UI while it did feel nostalgic was largely unchanged in design for a couple decades. In Dragonflight they've completely overhauled the way the UI works by adding real customizability and much more function meaning it's never been more convenient to just play the base game without any addons. Here is my personal guide on game settings and a couple UI layouts that I think are a really good starting point for most types of players. Quick disclaimer before I move on, UI layout and settings are extremely personal preference so I've tried to keep my advice down to the essentials and the things that just simply improve quality of life and I've also tried to omit any things that I thought are just plainly subjective. But throughout this video if you have comments or suggestions on things you think I got right or wrong, be sure to comment them as other people reading the comments may be thinking the same things. Alright let's get started. Before we get into the UI imports and layouts, there are some important settings you should change first. Firstly, set up your general sound and graphics settings. I personally turn game sounds off but keep master volume on so you can hear addon sounds if you add them later. But this is again compeletely personal preference. For graphics just make sure you have outline mode on, projected textures on, and spell effect density reasonably high. Everything else is dependent on your system and preferences, both those three things actually affect the visibility of boss mechanics and abilities. Next I turn on auto-loot this way when you click to loot a corpse it just automatically sends the items to your inventory but this again is personal preference. And I also check Combine Bags into Single Bag so that it looks like this. Used to require an addon to do this but now it's just in the game. In Camera settings i change the camera following stlye to Never Adjust Camera. By default when you press W or move forward the camera will snap back to it's default position and I just find that really annoying especially because a lot of the time if I'm running in a straight line I'm using auto-run and whenever I'm trying to look around I don't wanna be fighting the camera to do so. Also I turn off tutorials because Blizzard goes a little too hard with the pop-ups sometimes. Next head to interface and check Always Show Nameplates and change the nameplate motion type to Stacking Nameplates. Always show will make it so that mobs around you have namesplates, not just mobs you're in combat with and this just makes it easier to see things and be more aware. Stacking nameplates is in the name it just means that nameplates don't hide behind each other as much and and instead they stack up until they reach the top of your screen. Stacking is just better than overlapping because it's sometimes impossible to click a nameplate to target a mob that's hidden behind another nameplate. However if you have a really small display you may be forced to use overlapping nameplates. Change status text to Both or either one to be honest, this controls your ability to see HP and power numbers on target frames. And Display Health Text under raid frames controls the same setting but for the raid. Moving on to the action bars menu, check Show Numbers for Cooldowns because knowing when your cooldowns are coming back up is pretty helpful. And for the purposes of the UI layout I'll be sharing, check action bars 2 to 5 so you get 4 extra bars to move around. Alrighty now that we've covered settings let's move on to the UI itself. When making this UI i had a few goals in mind. I wanted to make sure your core abilities and cooldowns are easily visible and centered, some extra bars that are centered but a little lower for mounts, utility, buffs and things that you might want visible but don't need to be exactly center stage and have a small bar underneath for things you don't want on a keybind but still want on your screen like fun toys, appearences and stuff like that. Another important point was bringing debuffs down over your character frame so you can quickly identify whats on you. However you might be wondering why I didn't move buffs down. I thought having the entire buff bar anywhere near center screen was way too much clutter but Blizzard does have a solution to tracking your cooldowns uptime and currently active buffs. Head to Combat settings and under Personal Resource display select Show Personal Cooldowns and also select Hide Health and Power Bars. What this does is converts the health and power bars above your 2 middle bars here into a little display of what current class or talent buffs you have running and also the current duration of major cooldowns. The biggest downside about this is that you are just at the mercy of Blizzard as to what is displayed here, there's no easy way to customize this without addons however I think it's a very decent stand-in for most specs to keep aware of your buffs. Here's a look at the UI in action, this is what it'll look like as a tank or dps, if you are on a smaller screen you may need to scale things up yourself and use Larger Nameplates in options, however I configured this on a 24 inch 1080p display which I felt was a pretty typical screen size. Now to the healer version of this layout. This shares a lot of similarities with the DPS/Tank layout except I've created a lot of space in the middle for your raid and party frames. A cool touch by Blizzard is that if you snap certain elements together they are given the ability to resize and move dynamically as their neighbouring UI elements move. For example, When you're not in a group as healer the UI will look a little awkward as your own frame will be in the very center of the screen and I've made it so that your spells sit much higher up for visibility while questing and doing world content. However as you join a party or get into a larger raid the player frame will move out of the way to the left and the bars will move down to make way for the raid and party frames depending on the group size. This is a really good touch by Blizzard to include this function without much setup. It's worth nothing that I do use and strongly recommend click casting, especially given that the party and raid frames are centered. Click casting enables you to bind clicking on frame actions as spells. For example here i have rejuev bound to right click and swiftmend bound to shift right click. That's pretty much gonna be it, the import strings for both version of the UI layout are in the description. I was initially going to add a section on my advice when it comes to setting keybinds as well as my advice on what are the most essential addons you can use to complement this UI but I ultimately just wanted to keep this video simple, straight to the point and able to be used in a completely unmodded client. But let me know if you'd like to see any or all of those things and subscribe to keep learning more cool things. If you are a tank or looking to start getting into tanking dungeons in Dragonflight, I have a great guide linked below the like button on what I think you need to do prepare for the solo role in mythic plus as well as some tips and tricks of managing dungeons and placing markers to communicate with your group. Additionally I have a 60 second video going over a couple interesting console commands that allow you to zoom your camera out much farther and smoother in game. That's gonna be all for now tho, later!
