[Music] it is a joy to be able to worship the Lord our maker and our King on this Sabbath day despite the isolation separation and quarantine we're still able to give praise and to give thanks to the God of heaven and the god of Earth wanna thank our praise ministers and musicians for the beautiful music for the tremendous leadership of our pastoral team thus far and prayer and welcome and for our media team that is present to ensure that those of you who are joining us from home and from wherever you are at this time you'll be able to worship the God who reigns supreme the word for today comes to us from the writings of David Sam 20 verses 7 and 8 xx the vision of the Sam's verse 7 and verse 8 wherever you are with your Bibles your iPad your smart and not so smart devices to join with me as I read these words and I read from the old King James Version the Word of God says some trust and chariots and some in horses but we will remember the name of the Lord our God they are brought down and fallen but we are risen and stand upright I want to put a tag on this text and by God's grace preached from the subject trust God trust God your heads about your eyes are closed father we thank you for the opportunity of opening your word we come now it is your voice we desire to be heard I pray as I've prayed several times at moments like these that you will not allow the sermon to get in the way of the message nor the preacher and the way of the Cross but I pray that Jesus will be lifted Jesus will be seen Jesus will be heard [Music] and that when all is said and all is done may only his name be glorified we pray with Thanksgiving and we say wherever we are our men and our men trust God the 20th division of the Sam was written by David it along with the 21st division they are known as the warfare sons Sam 20 was a prayer of security and support for the Kings leadership when going forth to battle the armies of their enemies were often more equipped with superior weaponry and their arsenal was often an overmatch for the Israelites to calm their affairs ease their pain and alleviate their anxiety the King reminded them that while they may appear outclassed and outmatched although the enemies may seem to have everything to succeed as God's people they must always remember that their historical deliverance was never in man-made strategy but because of God's mighty power some trust in horses and chariots but we will remember the name of the Lord this expression highlights the duo divergence of dependency along with the sanest Jaxson yay condemnation of a very materialistic reliance when faced with conflict he underscores the fact that the tendency when challenged in combat is to lean on those things that are the conventional elements of success in David's day the army that had more horses and chariots was considered more superior thus even before the fighting began without physical confrontation there would be a pre fighting assurance of victory the confidence of conquest was based on the comparative analysis of physical possessions and properties more horses meant the capability to transport more weapons and supplies more chariots meant more mobile firing platforms more horses and chariots simply meant more power and more power meant certain victory that was David's day but come with me to our day because the idea of security and victory based on military might is a philosophy that has governed the superpowers of our modern world for many years no we do not count horses and chariots but the voice of strength and flexing of power is generally displayed in stockpiles of nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles and Harriett jets and Apache helicopters that attack submarines and as it was in the day of David so it is in our day some trust in horses and chariots but the metaphor of horses and chariots is not only representative of physical military might this is also characteristic of the trust in a political structure to be the savior of the country and Savior of the world so many people passionately postulate the notion that answers to our problems are to be found in the dynamic leadership of politicians who will and at pollicis to keep up with the economic changes social challenges and technological advances of our time and we clearly see daily how dangerous it is to put our hopes in self-serving egomaniacal politicians some trust in horses and chariots as some may not want to hear what I'm about to say and some may not appreciate it but the symbolism the metaphor the representation of horses and chariots can also fittingly Canole the property and prosperity of religious organizations and churches the statistics that have driven our bolts of success by the measurement of physical development and material attainments the self-tapping super silliest counting of facilities and institutions as the mark of success is often used as a platform for leadership longevity and self preservation some trust in horses and chariots but again as we extract applicable scenarios from our text we see that horses and chariots also represent all of us on a personal level we all have those crutches of success or that one thing upon which we stake our dependency that thing that person that shelter that makes us self confident and self-assured the wealth the education the houses the careers horses and chariots are all the metaphors the symbols the depictions of success the strategies and schemes human beings think are necessary to accomplish their ideology their Creed and dogma the acquisitions the assets the vigor and vitality the muscle and might all of these are horses and chariots and we are inclined to put our trust in these things these representations of horses and chariots why because they are visible they are measurable and they are enjoyable and somehow they guarantee an outcome that is predictable yet my brothers and my sisters I stand here today to say with all the emphatic capacity of putting trust in military might trust in the political structure trust in ecclesiastical attainment and trust in personal success here comes a microscopic invisible coronavirus to the entire world it has triggered the stock market to destabilization put unemployment on the rise have hospitals overrun with sick people caused mortuaries to be teeming with bodies it makes Christian sway in fear by the sensational winds of conspiratorial apocalyptic interpretations some trust in horses and chariots and our text calls our attention to the graphic confluence of circumstances stances and it serves as a vivid reminder and rebuke to refocus our attention on something better today the Sabbath declaration denotes that we must go beyond our reliance on the material beyond our dependence on the physical beyond our confidence in the measurable beyond our trust in the quantifiable hits pronouncement was then and still is a strong persuasive argument that the real answer to the catastrophes of faced in every Park or era never was and never can be found in temporal things the yearning for the beautiful the thirst for things glad and bright can never be satiated by human construction in transcendent hope we all possess aspirations and ambitions dreams and desires and none of those can be satisfied by human effort alone we need to have God as the architect for our lives God as the designer of our dreams God as the sustainer of our hopes human might is temporary human success is temporary human wealth is temporary human health is temporary far too many of us today are trusting in horses and chariots and I have to break it to you like this today the inevitable result of relying solely on the man-made trappings of success is failure to over confident ly measure future conquests merely upon the collection of current accomplishments will make us remain woefully ignorant of our own limit patience david says those who trust in horses and those who trust in chariots are brought down and are fallen in a real sense overconfidence in our own abilities in our successes and acquisitions will bring us down because self-centered overconfidence will lead to faulty assessment unrealistic expectations and harmful decisions but I'm glad to report to you that we can shout hallelujah because the good news screaming from our text today is that not only does the sanest see people having faith in horses and chariots not only does he see people with a humanistic quantitative dependence not only does he see people who grasp in confidence the successful existential trappings of life he says that they are some other people and they don't trust in horses and chariots they don't trust in things temporal they don't trust in man-made efficiencies they know that God has the world in his hands they came through the to wind came through the rain they walked through the valley of the shadow of death they are more than conquerors their bra bought with a price they are justified by faith and centered in God's love him braced by God's hand and established by God's Spirit sustained by God's grace and blessed by God's goodness David joins in that group and he says boldly we will remember the name of the Lord before I go and before I sit down today just give me a moment the answer the two questions you have formulated in your mind already during the course of the sermon I'll take my seat when I'm done answering those two questions the first question you are asking me is why the name of the Lord the second question you're asking is what name should I call on well I'm glad you asked because the answer to these two questions is embedded in the word remember the word remember is found in the King James Version but in several other versions it is translated Bost and it literally means it literally means to make public mention of it means to take pride in and it means to depend upon it comes from the Hebrew words our car which literally means to mark or to recognize therefore when david says we will remember the name of the Lord simply put it really is a recollection of what God has done in the past and a decision to rejoice about what God is able to do now and in the future and this my brothers and sisters if you ask me for the wonderful dynamic studied version of all I just said it is trust God no we cannot see God no we cannot measure God no we cannot predict God so sometimes it's difficult for us to put our confidence in a God we cannot see or measure or predict or control but if we just stop for a moment and think of the goodness of God we may not see him but morning by morning new mercies we see we may not be able to measure him but he puts food on our table and he puts a roof over her heads and he fixed our finances no we may not be able to predict him but we know that if we did it in the past we can remain confident that he's still able to do it again we can testify that if it had not been for the Lord on my side David says we will remember the name of the Lord well well let me tell you why the name of the Lord because they who trust in horses and chariots are bow down and fallen but we who remember the name of the Lord are risen up and standing upright why the name of the Lord but let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord reveals the sovereignty of God the sustainability of God the security of God and the salvation of God why the name of the Lord well let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord are Short's confidence in the midst of conflict 1st samuel 1745 you come to me with a sword and spare and shield but I come to you in the name of the Lord why the name of the Lord let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord promises protection in the midst of danger proverbs 18 and verse 10 the name of the Lord is a strong tower the righteous run into it and they are safe why the name of the Lord well let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord guarantees you blessings in the midst of disappointment Sam 1:18 in verse 26 says blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord why the name of the Lord well let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord brings restoration in the midst of brokenness Psalm 103 want to force it bless the Lord O my soul and all that is within me bless His Holy Name bless the Lord O my soul and forget not all his benefits who forgives all my iniquities who heals all my diseases who redeems my life from destruction who crowns me with loving-kindness and tender mercies why the name of the Lord well let me tell you why the name of the Lord because the name of the Lord ensures deliverance in the midst of danger so well - in verse 32 everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved that's why David says we will remember the name of the law years ago years ago when I passed it in Jamaica one Saturday night I had to take a preacher Karl Ming who had come to preach in my district I had to take him back home and he was living out of town at the time after I dropped him home and I was on my way back to where I lived I was speeding along the road then comes the police with those illustrious lights of illumination pulled me over I was guilty with nothing to say he was coming to take me away he walked up to my car and he sternly shouted based on the speed I was doing he shouted get out of the car as I was about to open the door of the car I uttered maybe unconsciously to myself but he heard the words I simply said lord have mercy he said to me immediately as I uttered those words he said what did you just say I said lord have mercy he said stay in the car and then he said where are you coming from I said I took a friend of mine who preached from me earlier today back home and I'm on my way home I need to get home and he said to me I'm gonna let you off just because of one thing just because you said lord have mercy I'm about to go but I'm declaring to you that if the words lord have mercy could save me then I believe the name of the Lord can save you now so as I go to my seat let me answer the second question what name should you call because the beauty of the name of the Lord is that it fits every situation there's a name for whatever you are going through right now if you just want to say hello him that simply means that he is God all by himself if you say l olam you're simply declaring everlasting God if you say l should I you are saying Lord God Almighty if you say El Elyon you're saying the Most High God if you say that an i you are saying Lord and the master if you say yeah wait you're simply saying Jehovah Lord if you say Jehovah Nissi you are saying Lord my banner if you say Jehovah rah you are simply saying the Lord my shepherd if you say Jehovah Rapha you are saying Lord my healer if you say jehova shamma you are saying Lord my present one if you say Jehovah set kanuha you are saying Lord my righteousness if you say Jehovah make a despair you are saying Lord my Sanctifier if you simply say Jehovah Jireh you are saying Lord my provider if you say Jehovah Shalom you're saying Lord my peace if you say Jehovah cyber otha you are saying Lord of Hosts well I know what some of you home are saying I'm not theologically trained I don't know all of those things you're saying when I declare on to you just look around your kitchen and look around your house and if you can say he's my bread or when I'm hungry he's light of the world here's the True Vine you can say is the resurrection and he is the life he's the Alpha and the Omega well I'll just go school on you he's my Rose of Sharon lily-of-the-valley my shelter in the time of storm water when I'm thirsty bread when I'm hungry lawyer in a sick dinner courtroom and doctor in a sick room he's my rock and he's my sword and he's my shield somebody says he's my wheel middle of the wheel we will remember the name of the Lord so let others put their confidence in a horses and chariots let them trust in acquisitions and attainment but I will I will trust yes thank you Jesus some drops in horses and chariots but we weigh well trust in the name of the Lord hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah father God we thank you that we can trust
