choice of top carpenters [Music] hey there welcome to the Perkins Builder brothers channel today on our project we're rockin and rollin with some windows doors siding painting and soffit and let's talk about how to flash a door sill before you install the door so it doesn't leak or rot out your floor system and this sounds boring but it's super important that it gets done we'll show you how we do it because we think it's the best way all right so let's talk about this opening before we start the flashing I'm going to show you a few components that are in place already first we have our ledger flashing this is a vinyl ledger flashing made especially for this scenario over the deck band and then we don't like this gray color sometimes so we use a dark brown we call it blacking it out so we're covering the vinyl with a dark brown which matches this house and then we're gonna bend and install this pan piece that's gonna go right here it's important to pay special attention to the wood area underneath the door before you install this flashing it needs to be perfectly flat and I mean really next to perfect use a level or a very long straight edge and make sure there's no humps in the plywood or anything like that if there are you need to plane it down or sand it down or something to be certain that the middle of your door is not going to have arch and the threshold or something like that because it really caused a major problem and it's very hard to fix later alright it's time to take some measurements for the flashing then we'll go bend it on the break stock we got some 14 inch wide aluminum flashing painting the black and brown we're gonna rip it in half and make two different pieces out of the one piece and our door opening is five feet wide so we're gonna make it seven feet long to go up one foot on each side here we go so we don't have one of those fancy slicers for the break but I do have a knife and that works not as good yep oh yeah [Music] all right so I've put this piece in roughly centered it really doesn't matter how high it is on either side as long as it's close to the same now it's mark the width okay and I'm going to cut this bottom flange part to allow me to bend the flashing in a 90-degree corner we need to add this to the list of useful things for a speed square to bend metal oh it's a perfect fit you know what the best part is I didn't even measure it you know just making marks is more accurate than measuring sometimes so you can see this little square hole right here that is a little bit of a leak potential so we're gonna put a little piece of metal in to fix that [Music] [Music] I'm not sure but I think I just nailed it nailed it confirmed alright now when you set the door itself you want to use a high quality sealant or adhesive like this is Lexel we use this all the time it's available underneath the door jamb so that it will stick and glue and seal itself to the flashing it'll be somewhere around here about right there and to finish things off we're gonna go around the top edge of all of our flashing with zip tape which is a flashing tape to keep water from getting behind them we gotta use the crock guy use your crock hey thanks for watching our video today remember to subscribe and also check out our online store where you can get awesome gear and will get money to feed our kids [Music]
