did it to support me and they love the products so you can be the next all right everybody Rob for ready here and today I'm gonna talk about that insurance discount that they promise you like hey if you're a good driver we want to reward you right like insurance well why would they reward you they should reward you for not making a claim there they're using this illusion of like we're gonna measure your risk and if you're lower risk we're gonna charge your lower rates cuz it's all fair but the metrics that they use and the methods that they use are a trap let's just leave it at that so I've got a couple of policies but insurance is one of my policies and they have a thing called drive sense oh my god I just downloaded save money oh my god it's that the website it's like oh you're not enrolled in drive sense yet you could be saving money and it's not a huge amount of money maybe it's ten percent but I spend many many thousands of dollars a year on insurance so I was like I whatever if I save a couple hundred bucks here there why not I mean I Drive a Chevy Volt every day you know a Chevy Volt on a good day it's like 105 horsepower it is a slow commuter pedestrian car as vanilla as it gets and I was like I just drive local I go to the gym I go down to angle would I go to Hackensack like I'm like in this local area sign me up and what they do is they they look for your first 50 trips and I'm like re it's my cell phone so it's now reading off of my driving from from my cell phone so I'm like all right well it would be an invasion of privacy and like how do they determine who's doing what so if they're like alright the car is driving but he's playing minecraft is that the driver or is that the passenger that's something that could be dangerous is it the does the braking hard is the accelerating hard those are the metrics that I thought they were using it's either hard braking hard acceleration you know stuff that would indicate a bad driver is like harsh movements like a lot of jerky like fast acceleration hard braking that would make somebody more likely to crash because they're less in control of their vehicles I could probably drive down the Philadelphia touching the brake no more than ten times I mean it's just all about how you drive nothing more so to measure if somebody's a good driver or a bad driver I would probably say you want to measure how how violent the inputs are both braking acceleration or turning if somebody's hacking at the wheel to do lane changes that's indicative of somebody who probably isn't really in control of their vehicle now the only way to really do it right is you have to monitor this stuff and you can't monitor how somebody steering the car you can't monitor if they're in the wrong lane you can't monitor if they're driving drunk I mean you would assume that that would be picked up by like a correction if they're if they're dozing off if they're not paying attention but the metrics I did it and it was like after your first 25 trips we're gonna give you a risk assessment and I was like how cool and they got me for one hard braking and then like an ambulance like flipped on its light so I hit the brakes but that's just them like all right that'll be averaged out no big deal and next thing you know I'm like super high risk and I'm like wait how could I be a high risk eye it's every trip it says great trip great trip great trip great trip how is that high risk and if I'm gonna be high risk you got to tell me why so then they start looking into it and they're like we factor in hard acceleration braking in and speed we can't factor in speed I Drive a Chevy Volt I go no more than 70 75 miles an hour but if I'm on a highway 75 miles an hour you can't compare it to the speed limit you have to compare it to the flow of traffic because you're not measuring risk if I drive down a road where everyone's doing 70 but I'm doing 50 I'm now an impediment so you're gonna say wow that guy's doing 45 on the highway speed limits 50 he's a safe driver no he's not he's in the way and these are things that should be measured that aren't being measured now how do you fix this I mean this sham now my insurance is gonna back this dudes high-risk blah blah blah blah blah can't insure that guy raising his rates or whatever it is they say they won't raise your rates but they'll find a reason so don't do it like don't do these things because if they're not even gonna factor in the flow of traffic versus the speed you're going that's perfectly safe me driving the same speed as everybody else is safe it's the anomaly when traffic is moving in this range whether regardless of the speed limit if traffic is moving in this range you want to fall in here or just say this is the this is the mean this is where traffic is moving you want to be right there inside that the guy is out here going way faster and way slower there's risk there because now you're going much faster than traffic they're not expecting you or you're going much slower than traffic and you're now in the way those are metrics that should be measured the best way to do this would be find people that you designate as good drivers professional drivers monitor their algorithms their their statistics the data that they generate driving around for a week and then compare every one to those people these people we know are in control of their car we know they're safe they've never made a claim I've never made a claim in my life the hundreds of those of dollars that I've spent on insurance personally I've never made a claim and my insurance company now thinks that I am high-risk because I'm driving the same speed as everybody else and no hard accelerations gray the car doesn't even accelerate hard and then be no heartbreaking I mean I am a very like smooth driver and and I every time I go out I'm not the fastest guy in the world but I'm very smooth very safe never been in an accident to that cost I've had somebody rear-end me stuff like that but never anything that I've caused an accident or been involved in an accident that was me losing control of my car so that sucks now you have I mean there's other ones that plug into the obd2 port I think that's all state but this this insurance app thing complete failure not predictable not and I'm not just like oh he's so butter do you think he's an aggressive driver or something like that if the driving that I've done in the last week in my Chevy Volt count constitutes high-risk I don't know what to tell you like uh in 20-some odd years of driving never so much as close to an accident let alone driving a Chevy Volt like I could see like if I was driving whatever I was driving on a rally or something like that's like whoa okay this guy's safety score I have GPS I have links up in my cars so I can track my use and my safety even in my my truck and my car hauler straight A's across the board I'm always no hard brakes no hard accelerations and I'm always like green lit across the board regardless of if there's a speed alert at 75 or something like that in my GPS because that's what it reads it's not I'm always my safety score which is important for monitoring employee use monitoring anything else my safety score is always an A so I mean I don't know I'm lost I'm like the point of this video was essentially to prevent you guys from making the same mistake I did and trusting that the insurance company was a rational being if anything after you spend three four or five hundred thousand dollars insurance they may say like all right you're good until you make a claim we got you covered like two hundred bucks here 500 bucks here just a token thank you you for the decades of not making claims and paying us lots of money obviously insurance doesn't work like that they're all about just feed me feed me feed me and I've got life insurance I've got health insurance I got car insurance I got I mean you name all the insurances renters insurance homeowners insurance and homeowners insurance but you get it you're paying for a lot of insurance for everything and you never make a claim throughout your whole life that money could've been better spent elsewhere so be careful out there don't trust the insurance companies because they're not using the proper metrics I'm all for it if they just think I'm an aggressive driver because of whatever that's one thing but if they're if they're setting you up to be like here here's your we're gonna monitor your driving and I was not an impediment to anyone I did not make anyone have to step on the brakes I did not have to step on the brakes I was as safe as a pair of a of a motor vehicle operator as you could possibly be on the roads for the last week in my Chevy Volt yet my insurance says high-risk so something to be aware of keep an eye out on the roads there or be safe drive safe but don't trust your insurance company when they say they're gonna track you you're better off being the unknown and just being neutral then I mean the speed limits the posted speed limits or whatever they're they're calculating and off of our nonsense nobody obeys them they are completely ticket generating revenue generating ways of taxing everyday life and it's arbitrary how they enforce it we'll get into that in a whole nother video but short story don't trust the insurance companies when they try to monitor your use of your vehicles let them judge you on your driving history your ticket history whatever metrics they currently use your income your age your sex your religion the like all the stuff that they probably shouldn't factor in that they do your education level oh he went to grad school he's probably a better driver no the guy's probably an alcoholic and he's gonna flip his car over a bridge but that's not what they factor in thank you for watching if you see people doubt they're driving like these things it doesn't model it the old guy that merges five lanes or like this stuff like that doesn't come up on it why because the guy didn't break the speed limit the guy didn't hit the brake sorry it's not going fast enough he's just in the way he's like a wrecking ball in the highway so well little triggered here thank you for watching see you tomorrow [Music]

Roommate used the Progressive one and his rate ballooned like crazy. He’s also not sensitive with his brakes, so he’d slam them and the thing would beep. I’d always joke and say β€œinsurance just went up” and we’d laugh about it. Then the bill came and it was no longer funny lol.

  • Fact: these devices cost money. To buy, install, operate, monitor. Therefore, insurance companies have to get MORE money from someone than before to pay for these devices. Overall insurance rates therefore can only go UP thanks to these things.

  • everyone thinks "I'm a good driver I dont speed, therefore I will be one of the (few) who benefit", despite my point above. But who is to say the insurance will actually only use speed and Accel/decel data to determine your rate? How about a few more things they can just as easily factor in, such as...

  • do you drive across an intersection on your commute that they consider dangerous due to high accident rates? Congrats, despite you driving 5 below everywhere and holding up traffic, your rate just went up. Or maybe it'll go up next year, despite that initial discount you got. You know, just normal price increases nothing at all to do with you, we swear.

  • do you street park at your GFs house on the weekend in a higher crime area? Congrats, despite your crawling up every on-ramp like my grandma, your rate just went up

  • do you drive late at night? Maybe in an area that has a bar? Congrats, despite your slow poke driving style, the automated system determined that this makes you more likely to be a drunk driver, and your rate just went up. No, they don't care, it's based on statistics.

  • I can come up with another 10 examples, but I think the point is made. Don't give these fuckers any more information than absolutely necessary. Once you have one of those fucking things in your vehicle, your record is branded and if you want to get rid of it, you'll probably be worse off than before.

  • I wonder how much this driving data is worth when sold as is, say to car manufacturers, advertisers, whoever. No no of course it says that in the TOC that they won't use it that way, definitely... For sure. Could never happen.

Of course you won't get a letter saying "your rate went up 8% because X". If they determine you are someone they would rather not insure based on factors as above, they'll just price you out of your policy without naming a reason. No customer knows all the factors used to calculate their premium anyway so you will never find out.

I had one from geico. It sucked. It would beep if you brake or accelerate "to hard". Problem is you get beeped at if someone cuts you off or pulls out in front of you. I drive like a complete grandpa and it would still beep at me for accelerating to hard. I drive a automatic corolla very gently for reference

It's going to get much worse.

You won't be able to own your car, or the software used to let it function, in the future.

Tesla is a good example. Can't get parts, can't repair it on your own and if you do, you will get "banned" from their network and their charging stations, or they will just shut your car down.

You're going to buy the right to drive a car, but the manufacturer, or leasing company will own it. If you start messing around with it, they will shut it down and it will be off grid. The argumentation will be wrapped around good intentions like safety and many people will be happy that the evil "racers" will not be able to "kill people, just for fun".

This won't happen tomorrow or in ten years, but I bet within 20 years, you will have a hard time owning a gas driven vehicle without any advanced monitoring features.

It won't be fobidden of course, it will just cost you a fortune to own, insure and maintain an "off grid" car.

Nobody in their right mind would do this.
