This is dumb...

PCCG and other Australian shops specify parts.

Yeah; don't buy a Dell or a globally branded prebuilt. Others are fine though

I just bought a high specced prebuilt from MWave (Aust) i911900k/Gigabyte Gaming 3080/ 32Gb 3600 ram/2x Samsung 1Tb M2 SSD. All parts were specified by brand and model. Priced the individual parts (assuming you could get them) and the cost of the prebuilt was around the same. Shipped out within 24 hours ordering and arrived in Perth within 5 days. Recommended.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. It’s something I’d noticed when looking at prebuilt, rarely specified brands of parts.

all right guys today we're going to talk about pre-built so we did a video a while back saying that some really one of the only ways that you can get a graphics card these days is to buy a pre-built and or a bundle which is kind of like my pre-built in a way but i started getting a ton of emails and texts and messages and stuff and people going hey is this a good pre-built is this a good pre-built what about this one is this one good so i thought okay now we're gonna do the all-inclusive how to buy a pre-built video the all-new 5000d mid tower airflow case from corsair features an optimized front panel for maximum ventilation while the integrated cable management and tempered glass side panel means you can show off more of your components and not your cable mess to see the full list of specs and to learn more about the 5000ds flexible fan mounting options perfect for both air cooling and water cooling enthusiasts follow the sponsored link in the description below so one of the reasons why pre-builts are still one of the best ways to get a graphics card especially if you're trying to build a whole system and this kind of sucks for those of you that have already built like 95 of your system you're just waiting on your graphics card this may not apply to you necessarily but to those that are like i want to build a computer but i don't want to start buying parts if i can't finish it so pre-built might be something worth considering and then you can customize it later on if you just want the uh the fun of building the computer yourself so the reason why these sis or system integrators get graphics cards is because they are a separate business stream slash revenue with the aibs the manufacturers uh you know for those particular components so for instance let's say we're talking graphics card here you know evga has a certain amount of partners that they partner with for sis to offer evga graphics cards and msi does the same thing in gigabyte so these sis have separate supplies chain streams from the si or the uh manufacturers of the aibs and even nvidia and amd directly to get these cards without having to go through the same retail channels that you guys do they actually call them channel partners and so it makes it a little bit easier for you to have a better chance at getting what you want through a pre-built system than trying to get it on your own but there's some things i want to talk about here because sis are not created equal the landscape is constantly changing for sis just like us when we're trying to buy parts because they are also subject to the same shortages and availabilities that we are so in order for their businesses to survive they're constantly adapting and changing uh the way that things are prices obviously the packages they put together and so today we're going to kind of talk about what to look for to make sure that you're getting the most out of your si build or your pre-built without getting hosed or paying more than what you should let's go and start off with the platform itself depending on who the si is now we've got probably more sis than we've had i think in the past because now we've got corsair that's in the si business with their acquisition of origin pc obviously we've got origin pc you've got your digital storms and these are more of a boutique builders these are the guys that have built like crazy water cooled systems for ten thousand dollars or you could get a basic system for like a thousand dollars hypothetically i haven't looked at what the prices are this week but things are constantly changing but most of these brands i know wanted to start tapping into the more entry level in mid market rather than being known for these crazy ventum type pcs that cost 10 grand you know fully specked up they wanted to get more of the mainstream builder or buyer with that's got maybe 800 to 1200 to spend so now you've got more brands offering these lower price spec builds but what happens with some of these brands too is they're starting to be offered by companies that offer other parts so we use corsair as an example they do have pre-built systems obviously they're going to use a lot of corsair products because it's a way for them to sell their products but already packaged and built into a system so obviously if you go with someone like corsair you're going to get very corsair centric type builds and if you're okay with that then that's perfectly fine start shopping there same thing goes with like msi msi builds laptops they build parts components but they also have a small i say small si integration company or system integration company because of the fact that they only have a couple of different pre-built packages that they offer they're not really customizable it's like package a b and c here's how they're built buy it there you go off it goes but origin pc now with a company like origin they still have their crazy one-off builds that you can spec up and kind of lay out the parts how you want and they also because of their their umbrella ownership now with corsair they offer a lot of corsair parts corsair cases corsair rgb lighting corsair fans corsair aios all that sort of stuff same thing goes for companies like nzxt nzxt started as a case manufacturer then started making aios and fans and power supplies and now motherboards and they went why don't we just throw it all in our own cases and call it a computer pre-built so you can kind of see where i'm going with that then you've got other system integrators that are very much more boutique type builders and this is where you start finding like your digital storms and i'm kind of drawing a blank here in some of the other brands maybe we'll show some screenshots here where it's kind of like here's the crazy rigid tube or even glass tube bends with all your water cooling stuff and it's just completely custom you know the kind of stuff that you find around here that i would spend weeks building they could do in much less time and off it goes to you and you have to take the time to build it so the point i'm making here is the first thing you need to look at is what are the systems that they are offering are they more in-house products or are they customizable because what you're going to start finding is with a lot of these sis they take a lot of control where it's kind of like here's our five packages you can pick one or the one two three four five it's built it's assembled in a warehouse already and off it goes which is going to be undoubtedly one of the fastest ways to get a system to your door because you're not having to wait for it to be built you're not having to wait for any of the parts to be sourced and wait for any of the tubes to be bent or whatever it's just like buying a car on a lot but if you're like i want a custom model well then you got to go through the order form and you got to check the boxes that you want and then you got to wait for it to be built now when it comes to the boxes that can be checked now we're going to talk about the customization of system integration builds where some brands have been known to kind of i don't want to say do switcheroos on you it's just you really want to pay close attention to the fine print because what you're going to start finding specifically with graphics cards these days is you start going through the list and it's like here's the base price for this particular spec build and it's going to be like an i5 or an i7 or an amd5 or ryzen 5 or a ryzen 7. and then you may not know exactly what cpu it is because what will happen is you'll click on it and suddenly it's like a resin five 3600 x and you're like wow that's a last gen cpu and that's not even that high of a cpu so then you go okay i want to spec that up so then you click on the higher end cpu and let's say you go with a 5000 series cpu then it's probably going to spec up the motherboard as well and you're going to notice the price starts to jump very very quickly and unfortunately sometimes the price jump is greater than the price difference of the parts themselves so that's something you're going to want to start playing around with bust out a calculator go on to micro center go on to amazon go to newegg start comparing the pricing and see are they price gouging you by simply wanting to spec up the cpu if the price difference between a 3600 x msrp and a 5600 x msrp is 200. that's just throwing that number out there i don't know exactly what the price difference is if the price difference is 200 msrp but they want to charge you 300 to spec it up well then you might want to start looking elsewhere because it's obvious then that they're gonna really start nickel and diming you on any of the spec upgrades because what the a lot of these base builds are designed to do is to make them look okay but not give you everything you want so you start checking those radio boxes and saying i want this i want this i want this and what you're going to find is at the end of the day for 500 worth upgrades to charge you 900 for it so that's something you really need to take a look at another thing you really really want to take a look at is are they listing the parts that are specifically going to be used now because of the part shortages this is probably going to be a more difficult thing to find which is the specific product they're planning on using oftentimes they'll show you a family like i said with the cpu they'll use a you know a core i5 or core i7 core i9 and then you've got to click on it to see exactly what cpu it's going to be but sometimes what they'll do is they'll let you spec up the cpu but then they go with a very basic motherboard i've seen system integrators put overclocking cpus like for intel into b series motherboards that don't even give you overclocking functionality so you paid for a spec up on your cpu you paid for overclockability sometimes they'll do factory overclocking for you with the si but if you want to go in and play with yourself later and they throw it in a motherboard that doesn't support such things well you paid for extra that you can't even use so these are things you're going to want to pay attention to are they showing you exactly what brand motherboard are they showing you exactly what model because one of the things you're going to want to do spec out the system that you would build it and then go look at reviews and read reviews on each individual part to make sure they're not just offloading something maybe nobody wants by throwing it in a bundle at a better price where you at the end of the day end up getting a product that's either inferior or you're just not gonna be happy with because for whatever reason the product just didn't perform and now they've got shelves of them sitting in their warehouse that they're just trying to get rid of as fast as they can same goes for gpus and this one is extremely common you're going to find that gpus are listed as rtx 3060 gpu well which one is it you guys know with graphics cards there are what 35 different models or more of each number you could have you know 30 different 30 80s hypothetically there was actually any sitting in warehouses some of the sis do still have 30 70s and 30 80s kind of trickling their way out but what if you just click okay 3070 and it's got like plus 490 dollars of charge right so that's gonna be plus 490 on whatever card that system came with which is probably going to be an older 20 series gpu which is what a lot of companies have been doing right now and then they'll charge you close to the retail cost of the card you wanted to upgrade to on top of the cost of the card that was already in that system so let's and this really makes my head hurt when i think about this because it bothers me when companies do this because it's taking pure advantage of you if they are not deducting the price of the card that's already in the system and reducing the upgrade by at least that much they're screwing you let me repeat that if they put a 295 dollar 1650 in there and you go i want a 30-60 and that's a 400 card if they are not if they're charging you more than 105 for that upgrade they're screwing you because they're keeping the card that they've based the system price on and taking it out and putting this card in there so if they're charging you more than the difference of the msrp between those two cards they are screwing you now on top of that if they don't tell you exactly which series card it is i can guarantee you they're putting the cheapest one they can get their hands on in there because if you've now got a price spread of 100 to 150 dollars between the cheapest 30-60 and the most expensive 3060 remember the 360 hypothetical i'm well aware of the gpu situation people they're clearly not going to put in the 150 more expensive card because that's just profit out of their bottom line so they're gonna start putting in the cheapest cards unfortunately we've seen some si start throwing in refurbs and they're not telling you that they're refurbs because sometimes the refurbs are the ones that are easiest to get their hands on or be stock from from their their supply chains or supply channels and they're selling to them to you as new product but they're not telling you that so these are the things you need to kind of keep your eye on the most legit and reputable sis out there are always going to list the products specifically just saying a brand is not good enough saying evga 3060 or asus 3060 is not good enough because there are wide ranges of prices and quality between their bottom dollar offering which is quite often the msrp price of a graphics card which kind of sucks but you know for instance there are companies still making blower style 30 series cards remember not even the reference card is a blower style right it's a it's a it's a dual crisscross fan right i guess technically that's not reference but that's what the founders edition card looks like they'll take the cheapest cooler that they can often throw it on there there's no sort of beefed up product on the board itself there's not better capacitors there's not better um memory modules there's not better controllers and and mosfets and stuff they're the cheapest that they can get to build the board to keep it msrp because then the profit is higher for them to build it for cheaper and if you're getting that product but you're being charged a premium for it you're being screwed and these are the things that people really need to consider the same thing is going to go from memory oftentimes you'll just see a gigabyte amount and then ddr4 because that's they all use ddr4 now they have been since like 2014 2015 some of that so if they're not telling you specifically which memory it is chances are they're going to throw in the slowest speed memory that they can get their hands on but they're going to charge you a premium for it because you upgrade it see here's the thing anytime you click something that's considered a buyer's choice the brands want to charge you for that it's not bad business it's good business it's just not necessarily the most consumer-friendly type business the same thing happens with automobiles automobile manufacturers are notorious for this oh you want that you want that hid lighting where you got to get our leather package for our interior it's like what the hell did the seats have to do with the lights but that's the way they do this it's they they create these packages because your cable company does it too you want the science channel well you got to get the planting channel with it i don't give a about plants i want to watch rockets blow up but that's the way they work because they know you don't want the other stuff but in order to make it incentivize for the companies that they're working with they have to bundle it as a package and off it goes power supplies this is another big one there is a wide range of quality between power supplies and oftentimes they'll just give you a power supply wattage rating we know watts are only half the story of electricity it doesn't tell you anything what is the quality of the build of the power supply what is the efficiency of the power supply what is the rail type what is the true amp ratings per rail all of that matters and the higher you go with your product specs to say start saying you want a threadripper cpu you want 64 gigabytes of memory you want an rtx 3090 hypothetically and they want to just say okay 1000 watt cpu or okay no that could be a thousand watt cpu overclocked but 1000 watt power supply which one is it that's gonna matter and the same rules apply often when it comes to power supplies they want to put in some 80 plus bronze edition with ketchup and mustard cables and then there'll be an option right under there you know oh you want modular it's going to cost you an extra 100 bucks or something like that so these are the things i want you guys to think about when you're going through these si checklists because it's unfortunate but a lot of these sis as time goes on right now with the market being the way it is are turning it into a seller's market and it is a seller's market and that's what sucks but at least arming you guys if you wanna know what that means a seller's market it means the seller controls the deal that's the way it goes the same thing goes right now with the housing market there are at least here in california there are far less homes available for purchase lease rent whatever to move into then there are people trying to move in so you get what's called a seller's market they control the deal they will often get more money than they're asking because you get the buyers fighting each other for the privilege of buying the property that is supply and demand that works in everything in market period whether it's graphics cards cars automotive property boats whatever i don't know i like boats but still i don't like to buy boats right now we are in a seller's market with everything arm yourself with this information so that you don't find out when the system arrives that they put in some stupid silver power supply in a beige box with the bottom dollar everything and you paid premium for it so guys this is where i need you guys to sound off in the comments below if you purchased a pre-built put who you built for or who you bought from down there and what the buying experience was like and did it live up to your expectations if you guys use some of at least the food for thought that i've given you today to let you know what to look for so you can go nope these people can pound sam they don't get my money and start looking at other lists so that you can see the way it goes at least then maybe you won't get screwed in the end when it's too late because a lot of these companies also too charge you some stupid like 30 restocking fee if you want to send it back to them you pay the 100 150 bucks shipping to get that computer back to them in one piece hope it arrives in one piece so they may not accept it back and then they want to charge you a third of the money you paid them just to take it back but i can guarantee you they're gonna resell it at full price which is a which is a very shady business to begin with so sign up in the comments below if you bought a system from a from an si how did it go did it live up to your expectations and did you get a choice on the parts food for thought guys thanks for watching this has been js2 since you have any other topics you want me to talk about to kind of arm you guys so you don't get screwed let me know by either tweeting emailing or commenting below thanks for watching guys and as always we'll see in the next one
