hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a quilt it's called twinkle little star and this is a pattern that i wrote so it is available for free you can get it by clicking the link right below this video that says free pattern and then if you like you can make it along with me at home so this is a layer cake pattern and there's four sizes included in the instructions but basically each size if you make the first size you're going to need one layer cake the next size takes two the next one three the biggest is going to take four so i'm going to make the size that takes two layer cakes now the layer cakes that i'm going to use are called cozy up they're designed by cory yoder of coriander quilts for moda and they're nice soft greens peach gold and the only other thing we're going to need to make the quilt is an accent i'm going to need three quarters of a yard for the size i'm using and i'm going to use this nice medium green so the first thing i'm going to do is cut up the layer cake squares they all get cut exactly the same way i'm going to cut four layers at a time because i'm comfortable cutting that many layers if you want to cut less or more that's up to you but just use an amount that you are confident you can cut through so the first cut i'm lining this up on my board on the lines here and i'm the first cut i'm going to make is six inches over so i'm going to put my ruler here now i'm going to turn this slide that out of the way a little bit and now i'm going to cut some four inch pieces so here's a piece that's now gonna be six by four and a second six by four that's just a scrap now i'm gonna get one more six by four out of here and from this scrap here a two and a half inch square so that's what we need from every layer cake square and of course all the numbers are on the free pattern so you don't have to remember them okay that's all of those pieces and now we just need to cut some background so what we're going to need from this accent is just a bunch of squares that are all three inches there that's all the pieces we need to make our patchwork blocks the next step is to take just these accent blocks here and mark the back side of each one so we want to make a line from corner to corner and i like to use a pencil if you had a really dark fabric here you might want to use a white chalk pencil but just make a nice line from corner to corner now the line that we're drawing here this is going to be our stitching line we're going to sew right along that line but i made some sample blocks earlier and to save time i didn't draw the lines i just stitched from this corner and headed towards the other corner and they came out fine now you don't have to try that but if you want to try saving some time check out that method see if it works well enough for you let's pull off the pieces we need for our first block i'm going to try to get four that are all the same color not the same print but let's get four different grays here those will work then we're going to need four of the accent blocks and then we're going to need one for the middle that's a different color let's use this nice peach one and head over to the machine let's just put the center block aside for now each of these rectangles we are going to put one of the accents in this lower right corner with the line angled like that and stitch right along that line now when you stitch along it we're going to then open this up you can tell if you have it stitched correctly if you open it up and all your raw edges meet so i'm going to do that with all four of these rectangles they all get stitched exactly the same way all right let's take these four rectangles to the ironing board all we need to do now is open this up give it a little steam and then cut off the back two layers so you've got about a quarter inch of seam allowance left now we're ready to lay out our first block here is how these rectangles go together the accent piece is in the middle every time kind of leaves a hole here and that's where this center is going to go now we're going to use an interesting method to get all these pieces together we're going to take these two pieces and we're going to stitch them together but we're going to do a partial seam so i'm going to line up this edge here and take it over to the machine and i'm going to start stitching just like you would with any patchwork pieces but i'm going to stop before i get to the end about three quarters of an inch from the end so this part see it's not stitched all the way down we've got a little flap there it's going to fit right back in this spot here and before i move on i'm going to finger press the seam toward the outside just on the edge here now this piece will fit on here and we can do a whole seam so i'm going to put them right sides together line everything up and stitch down this edge it'll fit right back here and again finger press away from the center and you can finger press the whole seam now this piece that'll fit and we can sew again the whole seam finger press away now this last piece is going to fit right there now since we didn't sew this whole seam we can stitch this piece on the whole way down so i'm going to put them right sides together i'm going to spin it all the way around so i can start at this end stitch a little and then move this so that your bottom piece you want your bottom piece to be completely flat here so i just fold that out of the way so i've got this part nice and flat take that patchwork all the way down the corners match [Music] one more finger press to the outside and now all we have to do is finish this last seam so i'm going to put them right sides together and there's the partial seam that we did earlier so all we have to do now is make these tips match up here came unthreaded there we go and all i'm going to do is stitch down here until i get to that other stitching and just drive right over the drive right over it a little bit and you can backpack a little if you want you don't you can't get too close up to this seam here but all you have to do is drive over your prior stitching now when we open this up and finger press the whole block is done okay now i'm ready to make the rest of the blocks but before i do i want to talk about the colors so each block that i make is going to be all one color so i'm going to make some blocks that are all peach i'm gonna try to get four different peach fabrics if i can but if i can't i'll just do two and then this one might have a gray center then i'm going to make some green blocks again try to get four different greens if you can now your layer cake may not look like mine your layer cake may have only two colors and that's fine make a bunch of blocks in one color then a bunch of blocks in the other color and that way when you go to lay the blocks out your quilt will look good so i'm going to get these all picked out ahead of time i'm going to pick out four rectangles and a center that's a contrasting color and once i get them all picked out then i'll go back to the sewing machine okay all my blocks are done and i'm ready to lay out the quilt now i've got 48 blocks i'm going to do a 6x8 and i'm just going to put the colors at random so i'm just going to try to make sure i don't have two of the same block same color block right next to themselves here all the blocks are laid out i didn't do any special order i just tried to sprinkle the colors out evenly i didn't have to do much trading around because this layer cake has lots of different colors now all i'm going to do is sew the rows together put the first row with the seam allowances to the right second row to the left and when you sew these blocks together there's no intersections to match it's only when you come to sew the rows together but that'll be pretty easy once that's done i'm going to put it right under the quilting machine i have all of the blocks put together the quilt is on the machine and now it's time to pick a thread color there's lots of good choices for this quilt so the first one i picked out was this dark green because it's the same color that we used in the stars here and that would work it's going to show quite a bit in the really light fabrics but it coordinates well next choice would be this green that's the same green that's in these blocks it's not really going to show in the stars it's not really going to show here that would be a good choice if you want your thread to recede now the gray there's a lot of nice grays in the prints in this whole collection and look it blends right in you can't see it on the green you can't see it on that green you can see it a little bit here a little in the light would still be a good choice i was kind of surprised at how much i liked this bright yellow it's going to show the most on the dark green looks good it's a good choice now this one i'm interested to see how much this will show okay it shows in the green but it's not real stark mixes in with the lights and i'm using a backing that's almost this color and i think it would be nice to have that corally peach show up on the backing so i'm going to go with this one for the quilting pattern pinwheel flowers should look really nice on the patchwork i like the way the flowers look like they're spinning because the stars that are in the quilt also look to me like they're spinning so this should work really well [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] i've got the twinkle little star quilt all done it's a very fun quilt very easy blocks to make i like how each block is a different color these almost look like they're spinning and i love the way the quilting i don't know if you can see the flowers there they are also spinning you can probably see the quilting a little better on the back side because i used that orange thread on the gold backing and i really like it when the quilting shows like that now it turned out 54 by 72 inches and this is the size that i made with two layer cakes and i misspoke earlier i don't know if you remember when i said it took three quarters of a yard of the accent that was for the smallest size the size quilt that uses one layer cake this one used two and i needed a yard and a half of this fabric but all those numbers are on the free pattern so you have to worry about remembering that thanks so much for watching our video today on how to make the twinkle little star quilt we hope you enjoyed it before we go we're going to have a giveaway we
