[Music] welcome back to Paul's Tech news the year of Our Lord 2023 is more than 25 percent over now that April is upon us but only a fool would think that this means no more Tech news and for those of you who were wise enough to return for this week's installment I have a veritable bouquet of freshly picked and sweet smelling PC Hardware stories to pleasantly distract you whilst I lead you down the Garden Path and though some topics like AI might be a bit thorny the most verdant Bloom is that which brings hope to us all the prospect of a next-gen graphics card for what might even be a reasonable price if you squint at it just so and do a lot of rationalization circuitous justification and apologizing for NVIDIA which should be easy now that they've officially talked smack about cryptocurrency the spring air is fragrant with the sense of the Season my friends and no that's not marketing you smell that's the tech news excellent today's video is brought to you by the Corsair Xenon Flex OLED gaming monitor which can bend from completely flat up to 800 R curvature but there's a lot more to this display which features an ultra wide 45 inch 3440x1440 panel with a 240 hertz refresh rate and .03 millisecond grade a gray response time the spec list also includes Nvidia g-sync compatibility AMD freesync premium certification Auto HDR with up to 1000 nit brightness 99 DCI P3 color gamut coverage a sophisticated burning prevention system and an integrated stand with a range of connectivity click the sponsor Link in the video description for more on the Corsair Xenia on Flex We Begin this week with good news I mean bad news I mean Nvidia sucks even though this GPU might be marginally more affordable so let's all hate on Nvidia While most of us continue to buy their products no discombobulated rant can truly Encompass the general feelings PC Gamers have about the graphics card pricing situation in the past couple years especially when it comes to Nvidia but it would appear based on rumors that nvidia's next RTX 40 series graphics card the RTX 4070 will launch on April 13th for a base price of 600 on the plus side that's 200 bucks cheaper than the 4070 TI's asking price of 800 and also less than the previously rumored launch prices in the 700 to 750 range on the minus side those comparison dollar amounts and even the lack of availability of mid-range 40 series gpus in general are tools that Nvidia has been using quite effectively to control demand and anchor graphics cards with an Ever higher dollar value tied to them increasing their perceived value by their target audience so PC Gamers can be gently massaged into a higher pricing tier for example it has been less than 10 years going back only five generations of Nvidia gpus since the GTX 970 debuted in 2014 that was also a 7D class card with a retail price of just 330 US Dollars now that's about 420 dollars in 2023 adjusted for inflation so yes a 70 class card now costs about 43 percent more versus nine years ago of course the cards are a lot faster too so if we switch back to making excuses for NVIDIA one might consider that the last gen RTX 3070 that launched in 2020 for 500 is now about 580 again adjusted for inflation so 600 is not a huge jump from the 30 series 70 tier card and so it is not without justification that some Outlets have received this News slash rumor more positively and see it as a potential in road for the 40 series for a lot of Gamers who have been waiting on the right price to Performance upgrade to debut but six hundred dollars is still a lot of money and these questions won't truly be answered until reviews come out so we can see if the card's specs results in good performance and some of the 4070s specs aren't that impressive on paper like a same as last gen Cuda core count of 588 although it is a new GPU architecture you shouldn't compare those directly and a 192-bit bus for the 12 gigabytes of gddr6x vram a 200 watt TDP means the cards probably won't need ridiculous Force lock coolers though which is good news for In-Place upgrades but if Nvidia really was considering a 700 MSRP for the 4070 perhaps recent market trends pushed them to drop it to 600. recent retail sales reports have shown a surge in interest for Budget AMD Radeon gpus which almost universally offer better performance per dollar in terms of raw rasterization performance and and while the GPU crypto mining boom of 2021 and 2022 has ebbed Fallout has continued in a variety of forms most recently with knockoff or counterfeit gpus Sometimes using sophisticated techniques to obfuscate their origin or re-label surface mounted memory chips obscure aib Brands you've never heard of like 51 risk corn or mulsi have become common on Chinese retail websites and have even popped up on sites like Amazon and Newegg here in the US how surprising I've never known Newegg PMS to shy away from a screaming deal on bulk graphics cards just because the brand is a mashup of letters with zero prior Market presence after all but Nvidia has had enough it would appear and according to the Chinese site my drivers is cracking down on retailers shucking these off-brand cards which Nvidia has denied having any relationship with and it appears that many of the big e-tailers in China like jd.com Dao Yin pinduo Duo and tmall have cleared out suspect listings and implemented new restrictions for second-hand refurbished and falsely advertised GeForce gpus and while some of these suspect cards are laughably obvious knockoffs like the RTX 3070 there are some who call me Tim others continue to masquerade as legitimate buying options both abroad and Via us-based sellers like Newegg who has more than 25 listings just for 51 risk gpus right now a look sold by the 51 risk official store and uh gosh just look at those reviews 63 percent positive great look on you Newegg to be hosting this high quality Marketplace seller I would also like to point out that Nvidia themselves are largely to blame for this despite the Crackdown on sellers because a glut of functional gpus on the second hand Market is the direct result of them selling countless pallets of marked up gpus directly to crypto mining operations during the height of the boom allegedly and nvidia's advice for consumers now which is to just buy a 40 series video card because the 40 series launched after they stopped doing all that nonsense selling the 30 series to crypto miners because it was no longer profitable is is very much just insulting furthermore attempting to PR whitewash that behavior by having your CTO come out this week and say cryptocurrency adds nothing useful to society again after Nvidia profited so much from it isn't really helping my perception of that situation either how about this Nvidia maybe get in touch with Newegg and Amazon and make them do the same thing that you're making the retailers in China do with these fake gpus then we'd at least have one less reason to hate the way you do business moving on though I've talked a few times in recent weeks about actually affordable am5 motherboards coming to Market and on Friday there was another big drop thanks to the official debut of the a620 chipset multiple motherboard makers including ASRock MSI Asus gigabyte and bios star issued press releases showing off new boards and listings have begun to appear at Newegg at least with asrock's 86 a620m-hdv m.2 shipping out starting tomorrow on April 3rd of course the a620 chipset is cut down in terms of features versus b650 or x670 with no overclocking support no PCI Express 5.0 support for gpus or m.2 ssds no USB 3.2 Gen 2 by 2 ports and only two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports natively so probably not the best option for dropping in that 7950x3d say but definitely a much better price range for Budget Builders using mid to low end ryzen 7000 series CPUs who don't want to overclock and are okay with the remaining specs that a620 provides because one of the most unsung stupid things about the most recent batch of new pc Hardware in 2022 and 2023 is ridiculously overpriced 600 to 800 motherboards that cost more than your CPU it's just not natural but we will now naturally segue into the part of the show where I get a little short with you Tech briefs hurry up a group of 1100 plus people have attempted to slow down the AI arms race with an open letter this week asking the tech industry for a six-month pause to further development and deployment of AI systems like chat GPT signatories include Elon Musk Steve Wozniak and multiple CEOs of AI startup companies leading us to believe that those companies are totally behind in their own AI development and need some time to catch up so they too can create the super intelligence that will rule over our species for the next Millennia AI is a complex and multifaceted topic with far-reaching implications which is why I'm glad this is Tech briefs so I can just make a sarcastic remark and move on speaking of moving on Steam has decided to break up with those old standby operating systems Windows 7 and Windows 8 come January 1st 2024 you won't be able to access the steam service if you're rocking either OS says valve so upgrade to Windows 10 or later and you can still play your games less than 1.9 percent of steam users fall into this category fortunately so it's good to know that once that number drops Linux users will move up in those rankings yet again just keep biting your time Linux users the Linux PC gaming Revolution will happen eventually it's just a slow starter there's a nasty Android virus in the wild right now which specifically targets banking apps more than 450 of them in order to steal personal info and Cold Hard Cash called Nexus which Google should totally sue them for copyright infringement over it can steal passwords and intercept two-factor authentication SMS messages and Google Authenticator codes which sucks big time it's also being sold as a service because criminals need versatile business models these days too and has been distributed via phishing Pages disguised as YouTube Advanced download websites YouTube Advanced is a popular app for watching ad free YouTube videos which needs to be sideloaded because it's not available on the Google Play Store because Google doesn't like apps designed to remove ads from Google services almost as much as consumers don't like apps that remove their personal data from their phones and sends it to hackers the larger component Market saw some q1 sales results trickle in this week and it's a mixed bag investors are likely disappointed that demand is weighed down and manufacturers like Micron are down more than 2.3 billion dollars year over year they were still able to issue a dividend of 11.5 cents per share though so it's not all bad news and while forecasts for 2023 and 2024 are still Grim they anticipate 2025 to see a turnaround as demand bounces back the flip side to demand dropping is that prices often drop too though and the relatively smaller group of consumers who are planning to purchase Hardware in the near future should at least be able to get a good deal on their memory dram prices dropped 20 percent in q1 this year says Trend force and they expect another 10 to 15 percent decline in Q2 that's great news for ddr5 in particular which has normalized in price a lot but still has a ways to go and that should make the more recently launched platforms from AMD and Intel more accessible for PC Builders also good news for PC Builders I am Midway through publishing my how to build a PC guide for 2023 the part 2 budget build tutorial will go up this week but there you have it guys Tech news for the week and if you liked it click that like button or
