for today's video I'm gonna do another Mouse mythbuster version of mousetrap Monday it's a segment I started where I test out different ideas from YouTube viewers I'm ways to repel mice and rats so far I have not had very good luck the rats ate the Irish green bar soap the mice used of dryer sheets for nesting material they didn't have any problem with the smell of wolf or Fox urine and they enjoyed eating food that was seasoned with the world's spiciest peppers so finding a good rodent repellent has been a real challenge now one of the most recommended items that YouTube viewers want to test how is mothballs so in this video we're gonna see if mothballs work to repel mice now I need to be more cautious testing these out than other items because mothballs are a pesticide they have a label for use and going off label can be a violation of federal law mothballs have been used a long time as pest control for the storage of clothes and the way they work is the mothballs are made out of a chemical known as naphthalene when exposed to air naphthalene will supplement over time or turned from a solid to a gas eventually the mothballs will completely disappear and the gas given off by them will build to levels enough to kill insect pests that's why it says store in an airtight container or storage closet these are not gases you want to be breathing there are many negative health effects when exposed to naphthalene it's even considered carcinogenic so basically it's only intended to be used in confined areas and not out in the open now I do want to test out the mothballs and see if they will repel mice the label says not for use to control squirrels bats and birds inside the home we're not going to do that I'm gonna keep this far away in a locked room inside the barn first I'm going to take out the mothballs then we'll set up our test that's a lot of mothballs I'll go get the box here's the wooden box we're using for this test I call it the hot box it works really well when you put in sunflower seeds mice will feed on those all night long and the box is fairly airtight when you put in the clear plastic lid slides in some grooves the only way for the mouse to enter is through a small hole right here with such a small area that naphthalene gas will definitely build in there I'm curious if it'll keep out mice now I'm gonna do four mothballs one in each corner that should be enough let's go set up the motion cameras and see if the mice will stay away from the mothballs the smell of mothballs is very strong but the my see every single seed they went in there smelled the gas but didn't have a problem I'm gonna try this test another night with more mothballs see if that works this is like 40 or 50 mothballs that should be enough that smells very strong I had a lot of hope for the mothballs but even when we added 10 times the amount this bag has holes in it it smells very strong of naphthalene gas but it wasn't enough to keep the mice out they still ate every one of the seeds they might not want to nest in here with that smell but if there's food they'll come right in they spend a lot of time in this box maybe the only benefit is the fleas and botfly maggots on them might be killed by the gas since it kills insects so as far as Mouse Mythbusters go even mothballs didn't work it smells really strong what I'm finding out is if you have a food source it's really hard to keep mice away I still have a few ideas YouTube viewer suggested that I want to try but so far we haven't found a magic bullet if you haven't subscribed to my channel please consider clicking the button right there I'm posting between 4 and 5 rodent trap and deterrent videos week so if you want to see how to catch mice rats squirrels chipmunks moles voles and Gophers stay tuned you
