DJI Mini 2 - Much More Than You Can Imagine!

so you have seen all of the leaked images the videos the specs and discussions about it already but we are still gonna do this video because i didn't put in almost four years of hard work to let some ding dong best buy employee ruin my first ever pre-release drone video so first and foremost i do want to let you all know that this little drone the dji mini 2 is truly remarkable and i thought a product like this deserves to be presented in a memorable way so i thought maybe i should do something like peter mckinnon style [Music] what's up everybody and then i thought no maybe something more like an iphonedo style his epic b-roll sequences and dreamy grew from the minions voice always impresses [Music] alexa activate farook okay these is the dji [Music] mini 2 the question is is it any good but i finally decided there's only one way that i can present this to you and that is the rus from 51 drones away so let's take a look at the brand new dji mini 2. okay so i just did my first comparison test between the mavic mini and the mini 2 and right off the bat i am so so incredibly impressed with this thing just so much better than the original so first of all it's windy today it is i'm gonna check it out on the uav forecast here but it's like 20 miles per hour all right so yeah we're at 20 miles per hour at 100 feet high and i was at about 150 let's put it up so at 150 feet it's 22 miles per hour sustained winds and gusting up to 35 miles per hour so it's pretty stinking windy today and uh the mini tube no trouble at all i mean a little bit of trouble when i was going sideways like when i was kind of panning sideways across the bridge there and i was trying to get some movement going with the against the wind you know the gimbal tilted quite a bit and so it over compensated or whatever so going sideways it did have a little bit of trouble but coming against the wind like the winds from the south the bridges to the north so i flew to the bridge got some footage there and then i flew back um to the launch location here and it struggled a little a little bit i think it got up to like 12 miles per hour with maximum speed i just shifted into um sport mode no trouble at all the mavic mini struggled the whole way like no matter what direction i was going it had trouble second thing and i haven't seen anyone talk about this yet because no one has been able to fly this yet because they don't have the app but um so much more quiet you guys the props on here are just so much more stiff and sturdy and i think that really makes and then how they're pitched i think is just a little bit different but definitely i would say 50 more quiet than the original mavic mini [Music] definitely much more quiet i didn't expect that at all i thought it was going to be as loud as the original mini so and then the other thing the image quality i mean seriously i'm going to show you here a little bit later into the video but the mini 2 with this 4k footage and 100 megabits everyone's been talking about 4k at 30. that's not what's amazing about this drone what's amazing about this drone is 100 megabits per second that that makes this drone so amazing so those are three things right away that i noticed right now with the first comparison flight between these two drones so so much better can you tell i like it so anyway i can't wait to tell you all about it so let's get right into the video hey welcome to the channel everyone nice to have you here again so the mini 2 is the latest consumer drone from dji and it is a much more advanced version of its predecessor the mavic mini i'm going to cover the most notable enhancements in just a moment i'm also going to compare the hardware differences to the mavic mini and show you the new controller design it's super cool and for those of you that have the mavic air 2 you already know what it's like and scattered throughout this review i'll also show you some things i discovered while flying the mini 2 some interesting things that you haven't seen in any of the leaks also be sure to subscribe if you want to see all of the testing that i will be doing with the mini 2 it is one of my favorite things to do with all of my drones now even though you may already know let's take a quick look at what comes in the box of the mini 2 fly mark kit first of all a huge thank you to dji for sending me this kit and allowing me to provide you with my honest opinion and about all of its features and performance in the box of the dji mini 2 fly market you will get a nice shoulder bag the mini 2 the controller which has the exact same design as the mavic air 2 controller with one tiny addition they also included this very nice prop holder which is much appreciated because these props are kind of fragile now that's the first thing that i discovered the props from the mini 2 are not the same as the original at first glance they appear to be the same but the mini two props are significantly more sturdy they have a little different pitch to them and i don't think that they are interchangeable now i didn't try it but i don't think that the mini 2 would fly properly with the old props installed next you get a charging brick thank you very much dji the three bank charging hub a usb cable for charging all of the necessary connection cables for your mobile devices three extra sets of props now one more thing about the props they are not clearly marked to help identify where they should be mounted they only have this little bump right near the hub for you to be able to tell the difference two of them have that bump and two of them don't now i think this might cause a little bit of confusion for some new drone owners so if this is your first drone just make sure that you really pay attention that you are replacing the same propeller because they need to be installed properly in order for the drone to function and they need to be installed in pairs and then finally you get an extra set of control sticks and a tiny among us sized screwdriver for changing your props the fly more kit does come with three batteries which are 2250 milliamps and some of you may notice that is actually a little bit smaller than the original mavic mini batteries but because these new batteries are more efficient they can be 22 grams lighter and provide just a little more flight time up to 31 minutes now i'm gonna cover flight time here in just a minute one of the unnecessary but very cool additions to this drone is the led on the front it's not just a plain white led light you can customize its appearance and what it does in the dji fly up you can change to one of nine different colors and you can have it remain on or pulsate or rotate through all of the colors it's very fun and i love this little touch of flair that they added now taking a look at the differences between the mavic mini and the mini 2 as far as form factor it is nearly identical the weight is the same at 249 grams even though the battery is much lighter on the mini 2 and the dimensions are just a couple of millimeters different the battery compartment is about the same size but shaped differently and there are a few aesthetic improvements to the prop arms it still has downward vision sensors and all of the venting is the same the camera is the same housing a one over two third sensor but it is now able to capture 4k video at 100 megabits per second and it can still do 1080p up to 60 frames per second that 100 megabits per second is what really is going to shock those of you who have been flying the mavic mini the difference is truly striking now the biggest change that you will notice is to the controller dj i chose to go with the mavic air 2 controller design which i believe will be the standard for all dji consumer drones for the foreseeable future it's much more robust easier to grip and provides a better viewing angle and balance by having the mobile device mounted at the top it can hold a phone that is up to 3.62 inches in width now my iphone 11 pro max fits in there very easily and yes you can also mount a tablet as big as the ipad pro 11 inch as long as you use a tablet mount like the pgytek pad holder there's only one difference i noticed on the mini 2 controller when you compared to the mavic air 2 one and that's that they added the pause icon to the return to home button now this helps people understand that this button is not only used for return to home but also to stop any intelligent flight modes or i should say quick shots immediately you just push that button and the drone will stop doing whatever it was doing all right so there's a look at the hardware and how it compares to the original mavic mini now let's head outside and get this up in the air and take a look at the major upgrades to how the mini 2 performs and flies here's what i have to tell you first of all the biggest upgrade by far to this drone is that it now uses ocusync 2.0 for transmission this more than i think quadruples the transmission range from the original mavic mini it's goes up to 6.2 miles or 10 kilometers away and that is just amazing for this drone now this is something i think is going to surprise most people and it shows what can be accomplished even with these smaller drones and then even with some strong interference like that's in ideal conditions and they say that even with some strong interference you can reach up to 1.86 miles which is more than enough for most situations now as far as a range test i'm certain that someone will put one out there i'm sure you're going to probably see one in the next day or two of this drone going public now i will not be publicly sharing anything like that but i will tell you this it is able to go the dji mini 2 is able to go much much much much further than the mavic mini it can fly far without having any signal interruptions okay next and equally as impressive the mini 2 records video at up to 4k at 30 frames per second at 100 megabits per second now one thing that should be mentioned is that's not a constant megabits per second that is a variable bit rate so it's going to be up and down but that's the maximum and if you're shooting at 4k most of the time you're going to be getting 100 megabits per second this tiny little 1 over 2 3 sensor can now provide amazingly detailed aerial footage with more data now here's a little side-by-side comparison of the mini 2 4k footage and the 2.7 k from the mavic mini now you might not notice a whole lot of difference if you're watching this on a smartphone you might see a little bit of difference but you know if you're watching this on a 4k monitor or on a television or something like that you're definitely going to see how much better it is the mini 2 can also record 2.7 k at 30 at a higher bit rate and then it continues to shoot 1080p at 60 frames per second along with a higher resolution and higher bitrate the mini 2 can also zoom in up to four times this means that you can get in closer to the action from farther away or you can add some zoom effects like the dyna zoom as you record by holding down the function button and then using the scroll wheel as you um back up your drone so you want to zoom in forward as you back up the drone and it gives you that dyna zoom effect it looks pretty cool now as far as the zooming you can zoom in two times on 4k three times in 2.7 k and then four times in 1080p the advertised flight time of the mini 2 is one minute longer than the original mavic mini at 31 minutes with those slightly smaller but more efficient batteries now how long have i been able to fly so far with the mini 2 i've gone through three full like legitimate battery tests and the best time that i was able to achieve from 99 battery down to where it's a forced landing where it lands by itself was just over 23 minutes so that was 50 percent flying and 50 percent hovering and it was 38 degrees outside that day with a light breeze that means with a brand new battery i'm getting about 72 percent of the advertised flight time now keep in mind that it does take a few cycles for these batteries to reach their full potential or to reach their full efficiency at least that's how it used to be i don't know if that's how it still is so i'm going to be doing some more testing on flight time over the next few weeks as these batteries get broke in now this is something that many people are hoping for and it's pretty impressive for you photographers the mini 2 shoots 12 megapixel photos in jpeg and now also shoots in raw having the ability to capture the raw data in your image allows you to do so much more when you're editing them and this will be a very welcome feature for aerial photographers i mean those two things literally makes the mini 2 a legitimate photography drone the maximum speed on the mini 2 is 22 miles per hour in normal mode and then 36 miles per hour in sport mode which is crazy fast for a little drone like this and i have gotten up to both of those speeds consistently it is so fun to fly this little drone especially in sport mode now finally one of the biggest disappointments with the mavic mini was the inability to handle the wind i've read so many stories on the forums about people losing their mini to a sudden gust of wind and not being able to get it back and i know there were a few times that i was clenched up pretty tight myself wondering if i was going to get it back home the mini 2 can now handle a scale 5 win so up to 23.5 miles per hour but as you saw early on in the video here i was flying in gusts up to 34 miles per hour and the mini 2 handled it like a champ now although it can't handle the wind as well as some of the bigger dji drones it's definitely impressive what they've done where they've taken the same form factor and basically the same drone and made the motors stronger so they can handle the wind it's so much better than the mavic mini now when dji releases a new drone they typically will also release some upgrades to the software it's no different with the mini 2 as the dji fly app now has a few more options to go with this impressive little drone so i was going to go through the app with you in this video but i don't want this video it's already getting to be too long and so what i'm going to do is i'm going to make a separate video here and i'm going to release it soon and i'm going to go through the dji fly up in detail so for those of you that are just getting this drone for the first time and you're just seeing the dji flyout for the first time i'm going to be releasing a video that's going to take you through everything so you're fully informed on how to use that software all right so we all know there's no such thing as a perfect drone right well there's three things that i want to tell you about that i experienced with the mini 2 so far number one low light conditions still not great the mini 2 footage does not look very good the first two days i was flying in really dreary cloudy low light conditions and the footage looks terrible granted it is kind of a terrible time of year around here to fly just because everything's brown and like dead and everything like that but even if i was flying like the mavic 2 pro the mavic air 2 that footage would look better and i think that's how it's going to be because of that smaller sensor so low light not so great number two i had some issues when i was flying uh the first couple of days i would put the gimbal down like i was flying like 20 miles per hour i'd put the gimbal down to get like a bird's eye view like i'd put the like straight down pointing straight down and when i did that it just like it hit a brick wall like it just started creeping along like three four five miles per hour and then i would just tilt the gimbal up just a little bit and then it would travel normally normal speed i put the gimbal down it would slow down to like five miles per hour so not really sure what's going on there i've never experienced that with any of my drones i've been able to go full speed with the gimbal pointed down and it didn't happen every single time it probably happened like i'd say four out of five times uh but really weird really frustrating so not sure what's going on there and then the third thing when i was trying to get a wide angle panorama of the wind towers when it would do the last image like it takes a whole bunch of images i think it takes nine images and when it takes the last image it just froze and then it would send up a warning saying gimbal motor stuck or something like that i'll put it up on the screen here but and it happened every single time i can't shoot a wide angle panorama because it freezes on the last image and it has nothing to do with the wind it's i don't know what's going on there so there are three issues that i had otherwise this is a great little drone okay so the bottom line on this little powerhouse right here i think this will be the greatest selling drone of all time now that's a pretty big statement but i really think it is going to be one of the most popular drones if not the most popular drone that we have ever seen just because it's everything for someone that wants to get into the hobby so for those people that are just thinking about god i really should get a drone i really want one this drone the mini 2 fits everything it is the perfect beginner drone it's stable it's compact 4k video 100 megabits per second long flight time occu sync 2.0 a great robust heavy duty controller fun flight modes and you don't have to register it with the faa in the us because of its weight it truly is remarkable what dji has accomplished in the past year or actually in the past two years and this drone right here makes me very excited for the future of this hobby now there's a link in the video description as well as the comments if you are
