When you realized you weren't coming down why wouldn't you have just hit throttle hold then powered back up under the clouds?

Small plane pilot here. I did read the description and I'm glad he now knows that this was a stupid thing to do. This kind of thing worries me because other small airplanes can sometimes be hard to see. The risk of a collision no matter how low the air traffic in the area is completely unacceptable.
