[Music] hey everybody welcome to my channel if you've never been here my name is orly shanty I'm stoked that you're here you came on a good day oh man I'm checking something off my list had this on my list for literally two years it's really embarrassing because I know how to do this and I just haven't so I'm doing a home decor DIY today our main living room which is where we're sitting right now has these big windows that face the street I love them they're beautiful they let in and flood a ton of light in this house however there's a few issues with them one is that is West so when the Sun sets they come through those windows in the most aggressive manner possible the window to the left of my computer will shoot the light right through when I'm trying to edit and I literally like my eyes start tearing it's so sharp and so bright the other issue is just privacy you know during the day I don't mind it so much because I can see out but at night it's pitch black outside our lights are on everyone can see us inside I just look really really exposed just makes me feel a little sketchy so I've been wanting to do curtains but I really wanted to have some beautiful like easy breezy linen curtains those are actually really expensive my window is pretty big so that means I actually need four curtains for that window any time you take your measurement you don't just want to you want to measure what your window is let's say it's 50 inches wide you really need at least a hundred inches of material then because when you close your curtains you still want to have that nice volume in the curtains you don't want it like pull tight it looks really cheap what I decided to do is go to downtown and buy some fabric downtown for one of my curtains I'm going to show you a complete no so no fabric glue no nothing way of doing these curtains which is really cool if you find a beautiful piece of fabric that you want to turn into a curtain I'll show you how you guys can do that or if you have no idea how to sew you can still customize your space for the other window I am gonna do a slight sewing version I'm gonna teach you guys a technique called a French seam it's a really great useful technique because it cleans up the seam on both the front the back of the curtain which is important given that from the outside you can see the backside of the curtain so you do want it to look nice this is when I got my actual fabric you can see what I'm doing is I'm having him cut them in the length I need the curtains so I knew that I needed about 90 inches of length so I just told him to cut 90 inch pieces that way everything is pre-cut so once I got to my house I didn't have to like lay you know 20 yards of fabric on the floor measure cut he went there he caught he ripped everything is ready to go in my bag those things will make your life a lot easier if you can do that measure how much you need ask them to cut them there in advance you will save so much time when you actually get home to do this tonight officially is our first night with curtains I can't wait alright let's queue materials you all right so every fabric has a selvage edge which needs to be cut off on a fabric like a linen a silk a cotton all you have to do is a tiny little snip on the edge and rip and it is going to rip perfectly clean straight down saving you a ton of time because you have to clean up all of your edges on all of your panels now because I want this to be minimal sewing even with this version which is the sewing version I want minimal sewing so the tiny frayed edge I am gonna actually keep that but I do need to merge my two panels so I have a large enough curtain now what you want to do is figure out your right and your wrong side of your fabric this particular fabric has kind of like a gold thread on one side which I don't like I actually like this side which is a more traditional linen so that is going to be used as my right side of my fabric now step one for a French seam is to pin it together and sew it in the opposite way you normally would this means that basically the seam is on the outside of the garment right normally we do it face-to-face or right sides together so it's hidden on the inside when you do a French seam you do it opposite for the very first step so what you can see here by the way when he cut my fabric he cut them at 90 inches but he didn't cut it perfectly at 90 so once I pin them together if you have anything that's slightly uneven just again snip it so that it's even and tear it and now you're gonna have perfectly even curtains okay so I'm doing the first part of the French seam I'm sewing it together now like I said what you're looking at is the right side of my fabric this is actually the part of my fabric I want to see so if I left it just like this you would be looking at the seam that's not how it's gonna finish off that is step one right now I'm sewing and trimming off my edge the reason for that is you want about an eighth of an inch of seam allowance if you can't sew it that tightly then just sew it with a larger seam allowance and go in and trim it after the fact but having a very small seam allowance is super important when doing a French seam and you'll see why in just a minute next step is ironing this is really important and we're doing gonna do this a couple of times you want to iron it going one direction I can see I'm pushing it to the left and now I'm going back in and pushing it to the right that's gonna create really crisp clean sharp edges no bubbling you want everything to be really nice and crisp you're gonna do it on all of your curtains going all the way up in down now you're gonna fold it again this what you're looking at now is the wrong side of my fabric so what you're gonna do is fold it so that that original hem is right in the Sun you can see it's right there in the center I'm kind of pinching it I'm going to lay it down so that the seam is right along the edge and I recommend just pinning it in place so that you know it's not gonna move on you because we are gonna press it pressing it is not only gonna make it really crisp but it's gonna make it much easier when we're sewing that everything's gonna stay exactly where you want it now this is the next and most important part of the French seam we are now basically hiding that original seam inside this new one so what you're looking at right now is the wrong side of my fabric this is going to be our finished seam when I open this up it's gonna be clean finished from the front and in the back it's gonna have this really nice like pressed seam where there are no raw edges there's no overlock there's no stitches all you see is a really crisp clean seam from both sides which is important when we're doing a curtain since we are gonna see it from the window side right okay so here it is you can see this is the wrong side of my fabric there's that really nice clean pressed seam with no raw edges no nothing and on the front side it's a normal regular seam so this is a beautiful way of doing curtains it's actually very simple even though it sounds complicated and it's gonna make them look really professional from both sides now if you already have curtain rods hanging ignore this and fast-forward to the no sew version which is at the end of the video if not I will show you how to hang your own curtain rods so first thing I did is just measured exactly how high I wanted them off my molding I knew I wanted them about 6 inches off my molding so that it would make the window look taller so first I measured six inches then I grabbed the bracket put it at that six inch mark and made sure that it was level and then just drew in the circles the two little circles for my screw so I knew exactly where they were I'm just double checking it to make sure that I'm at the right height which I am and now I'm going to pre-drill those holes this is gonna make it easier so that when I'm up there and I'm holding the bracket and the screw and the drill I don't have to use quite as much strength and power because I've pre-drilled those holes it's not absolutely necessary but it does make it easier I've found so now I'm holding the bracket and I kind of screw in that first one just a little bit so that I don't need to hold it with my fingers I went in I did about half on the right half on the left and then went back and tightened him up and you can see actually once you go tight that bracket kind of straightens itself out so it's in I just kind of tug on it to make sure it's strong and with this particular curtain rod this is how mine was set and everyone's will be different but this little hook is what's gonna actually hold the curtain rod so you line it in make sure that it's straight like given an eyeball once it's super straight then you're gonna want to go in with a screwdriver and really tighten it so that it's not gonna wobble on you okay I'm gonna show you this one just to kind of touch base again on what we did you're gonna measure how high up you want and mark it you're going to pre-drill the holes that you marked in your bracket so that you've got those holes already there then we are going to take our bracket and our two screws you always want everything on you so I put things in your pockets once you're like up on a stepladder you don't want to have to get up and down so I put the bracket in I use my finger to screw it in just a tiny bit I do half on the right half on the left go back to tighten it just makes it a little bit easier and check it then again the little cup hook thing that goes in there pops right in I tighten the screw once everything is perfectly even and then reinforce it with my screwdriver now for me this was simple because I was only gonna use three brackets so obviously the next one's gonna go right at the window break if your curtains are gonna be really heavy you might want to use all four brackets that your curtain comes with and in that case just make sure that you measure them so that they're evenly spaced apart obviously but in my case it was really simple I just went above the window okay so now it's time to put up the curtain rod I got one of the adjustable kind so I'm just popping it in and adjusting it a little bit I knew I wanted them to extend beyond my window and what I learned is I actually should have extended my brackets beyond my window it's fine they still function but if I could do it again I would have put the brackets all the way out nice throw Ben now all I'm doing is putting on my rings and I'm just making sure that I have an even enough amount on the left and the right okay so it's time to clip our curtain now this is the reason this is such a simple curtain even the sewing version what I'm doing now is I am measuring an overlap this overlap that I have is what makes the curtain adjustable so I looked at the floor and I realized about a six inch overlap makes my curtain sit at the exact right level so what I did is I put the six inch overlap and clipped my left side clip to my right side and clip to my Center now all I'm doing is making sure that it's a six inch overlap and I'm evenly distributing the rods you can see here I find my Center and I grab my Center ring I clip it now I find my Center grab my Center ring and I clip it there's no need to go through and measure the distance you just find the center and clip it to the next ring but you can see that because I have that six inch overlap it functions like a really pretty ruffle a little pretty detail but it prevents me from needing to do sewing in a casing or doing a hem but here's the no sew version what you're gonna do is take make sure you've got the right side my fabric member had the glittery side I don't want that this is my right side now there's a few options that you can do one is folding it over like this to create kind of like a nice trimmed edge look at the floor and make sure you're at the right length and what you would do is just clip it now take the other side just line it up and clip that on the outermost edge take your Center there we go find your next middle alright so now we're good so now you basically are just going to clip them on and again this is about as like flat as you're gonna want to go ideally I would like to make this thicker and I might end up adding a second one so this is fuller but for right now it's fine let's say your fabric is not like my linen fabric where the one side that folds over still looks really pretty you could fold it but hide the fold in the back could still leave it like this where it makes it adjustable it adjusts the height it has like a nice kind of crisp edge but it could be folded backwards so you just see the more solid look from the front you're not actually seeing the ruffle or the wrong side of your fabric if you do need to have more width like double the width said it feels fuller but you also want it to still be no so then you can just click a second curtain next to it you don't actually need to do the center seam if you don't want to you can use fabric glue if you want or you could just overlap them and clip one that's clipping the right side and the left side of the new curtain together and it will be clipped and then it will just hang like that [Music] [Music] so long but I'm calling [Music] go get it [Music]
