hey everyone it's lisa from the blog farmhouseonboon.com and today i'm going to share with you an ikea curtain hack if you've been following along with our farmhouse journey we bought it almost two years ago now which is crazy you might have seen some living room updates over the years when we first moved in i just took all my furniture from the last house and put it in here i did a spring update then i did another update i brought in a green couch i ended up not liking that in here recently i brought in a foam mantle which really warmed the space up but i still had issue with the drapes so i made some tie top linen curtains which i shared on my youtube channel how to make really loved them i actually ended up bringing them upstairs in our girls room makeover but they did not work in this room and the reason is they just felt very pulled down i don't know how to describe it but at the top where the ties went there was so much weight from the curtains in such a tall ceiling room this this room has really tall ceilings it feels very grand and the flowy linen curtains just didn't work they work upstairs we have flowy linen curtains in just about every room upstairs except the boys room at this point and they look beautiful but i wanted something with a bit more structure in here now i'm going to be painting the walls and so i wanted to stick with white and then i'm still undecided on the wall color but i wanted the curtains to be white so we did a few things we hung them higher we hung them wider so that now you can actually see the trim because we have really pretty trim in this room the way we hung them before actually covered the trim up a lot and i didn't really like that and then we also did this ikea curtain hack which i've seen all over the internet i've seen it done a lot of different ways i will show you some of the options and then what i ultimately went with so to do this you're going to need some pleater hooks i just got these dritz pleater hooks and i did five of them per panel for the ikea rifta curtains now what's awesome about the ikea rifta curtains is that they're really inexpensive you can get them for 29.99 for a pair at ikea which is super cheap but if you hang them this way they actually look high-end and more professional i don't know i've never really expanded my knowledge into curtains and how when you hang curtains different ways how they look more tailored and more laid back it just curtains isn't something i thought a whole lot about in my life but i knew i wanted something structured in here and this is definitely the way to get it on the cheap now the way you do this this is really easy so don't let this intimidate you it's no sew unless you have to hem the curtains which i do but on the back of these ikea rifta it comes with the pleat panel here at the top and all you need is pleater hooks to make it happen so what you do is each pleater hook comes with four prongs it also comes with a little hook and that is to hang these rings on is by putting them in the back here but staying consistent so for my project here i actually read about using pleater hooks on ikea rifta curtains on several different blogs i actually ended up going with the method that white lane decor used on her blog where she did one panel and then she put one in skipped five put another one in skipped five all through on the first pleat panel thing and then she skipped one did it again skipped one did it again now another way to do it is to work in each section but to make smaller pleats so another way i saw to do it was to start on the fourth one skip three and then skip every three until you get to the end and then leave four on the outside and then just do that on each one and that creates a small pleat in each section versus a larger pleat every other section so i'm going to do a close-up here and show you how i did it and then show you the other option as well okay so on the very first section here i'm putting my pleater hook in here now i found that you really only can do one at a time before you go up to the next level here or they'll all come out so now i'm gonna skip one two three four five and then put another one in on the fifth one then do that again one two three four five and then five more should be the end one two three four five okay so now i have them all in the bottoms now i just go to the next section up and line them up with the one that they were below it's a little bit tricky and it's really tricky to try to get on camera it's not as tricky when you're just doing this sitting down on your couch i'm trying to do it through the lens of a camera okay so now i have it through all four sections on the one above it and then finally i'm going to follow those up to every fifth one here on the top row which i can just keep following above the one previous i have to keep counting the only time i actually count is the first time you can see this one here just one on one so i'm going to undo that and go over once you're sure they're all lined up you can just push this cleater hook up and then if you look on the other side creates a very beautiful pleat and then i'm just going to skip this one and then do the exact same thing here skip one exact same thing here skip one same thing here all the way down now that makes for a total of five pleats let me show you another option i saw this on grit and polish or the grit and polish i'll leave a link down in the description box she also is on instagram very inspirational but she did hers a little differently and i like both ways i just ended up going with this one so she skips four so one two three four and then does every third so one two three one two three one two three and then that final one is back on the fourth from this side one two three four like you started on this side so instead of skipping whole panels now if i carried this all the way through up you could do that in each panel and there'd be a small pleat in each panel so let me complete this so you can see what that will look like and this is how this one looks and then you would just do it in each one because you already skipped a space before and after in each little pant now another thing that she does on hers is puts a little stitch down here and that just defines the pleat even more so you can do that you don't have to you could even do that with this style that i did put just a little hand stitch right in here all right you'll have to excuse the construction noises we have work being done at our house but i still needed to get these curtains done today so i'm going to finish this one that i didn't finish this other panel i hope that i've given you some ideas on how to get really inexpensive curtains that look more tailored and professional without spending a lot of money i ended up going with a almost antique brass look for the curtain rods and then i also went with the rings to hang them again my goal was just to make it to where when they hung it wouldn't pull from the top and weigh the curtains down but instead have a bit more structure to it i really think that we were able to accomplish that with this project very happy with it just a few more steps and i will have this living room makeover done we actually did get a couch which you'll get a sneak peek of whenever i show you these curtains i have some artwork to hang i do want to repaint the walls it's all a process i'm really looking forward to decorating this house for christmas i'm excited about that especially with our new mantel you can check out that project as well i'll link it below as well as all sources for my living room and this project alright well thank you so much for watching this video if you
