so it's wednesday of week three actually it's like the end of week three it's supposed to be a two-week job on the way over here just now uncle kathy is looking at me driving the car and she's looking at me she says you look really rough i'm like yeah i look rough see that's how you know if i'm really involved in something like you know okay like my beard is out of control it's not look like fidel castro right i don't care this car has eaten my life if it was easy everybody would do it and once again like i said the last time i attempted this your body guys i salute you i give you all the respect in the world this is hard so here's where we're at with this deck okay so initially we found we identified seven dents right the car is straight it's never been in any major accidents or wrinkling or anything like that um rust free no rust and it had seven small dents so i went ahead and i fixed the seven dents and then primed it and i did like you guys had suggested once i primed it i sanded it and i hit it with wet right i hit it it was a square bottle i got some water on that wiped it down and then i found probably oh i don't know 20 little waves little divots and so on and so forth so i went around the whole car and did that sanded it out and uh once again wet everything down and now i'm finding even smaller things right like you know uh there was there were deep gouges in the original paint i actually ended up having to send all of the original paint off um it never stopped it was just it just kept going and going and going so what i thought was going to take a week has now taken three weeks and this is the fourth or fifth time i primed this car and sanded it and cleaned it ready to go and then you find something else so you got to kind of start all over again the prep in a body job is everything right um i'm over my head it doesn't matter we're going to get this done so i said to myself i said self okay that's it no more messing around with this thing i've gotten every wave i've gotten every divot every dimple every little thing i got it all squared away and straight i've got it mostly re-primed and uh we're going to spray this thing now full send whatever it is it is so i'm going to give this thing a just a quick wipe down with cleaner and and and you know and we're going to shoot it tonight now the color we went with is restoration shop british racing green metallic it's beautiful i did some spray outs you know to test on our valiant over here yesterday and the color itself was beautiful but the texture was like really you know it was a lot of orange peel and i kept adjusting the gun i kept playing with it and finally i threw the gun and i ran over to harbor freight and i grabbed this thing for 15 bucks and i said all right let's just start with fresh so this i'm gonna do right now just mix up some paint and uh we're gonna do a little test spray out on that car then if everything goes smooth we'll move over and shoot our roof and work our way down from there so yeah i'm kind of like if if uh if chip foose and bed shed adopted a special needs child and tried to teach them bodywork skills right here so let's just twist that all right we got a regulator set 40 pounds let's go see how this sprays oh yeah what a difference [Music] the old gun must have had stuff clogged up inside of it or something that's perfect look to the car so remember just over the shoulder right foreign [Music] so so [Applause] so [Applause] so well three weeks of sanding and three hours of spring and i'll tell you the truth what i'm seeing so far i like a lot it's definitely a cleaner job than the swinger like this minimal orange peel there's a couple of spots like right through here where it appears like it's like what they call dry spray which is what i'm learning about but i think that was because of the way i was angling the gun um i'm not gonna stress it uh this fender the shine on it is beautiful but i can see where i missed some of the contour of it like the fender isn't like exactly straight but it shines really nice and that's good enough for me right now um overall i'm i'm very happy with this so far we're going to let it sit and uh cure overnight and tomorrow morning roll it outside peel the tape off and see what we got but so far it looks good look at this [Music] [Music] not that i was up this morning early enough to kick the rooster's ass put all the stuff back on the car kill all the the tape off and everything so here's what we got it's a little bit of orange peel but not nearly as bad as i had on the other car on that swinger um we got a couple of bugs here and there yeah now to be fair my friend jim bennett offered these for his paint booth but we have a policy on this channel that we don't use any tools equipment parts that the average guy can't get his hands on so the average guy doesn't have access to a spray booth like that so that's why we did it the way we did it um the over spray i know what the overspray is from i played around with it earlier this morning and i have the fan set too wide if i narrowed down the fan i would have had less of that the orange peel but i mean it's really not bad so um here walk around the car i got a couple of runs got one over here one here i think there's another one up here someplace not bad nothing that can't be nothing that can't be uh sanded down now you also notice this morning in the light light is very important which is something i'm learning more and more of the light that it takes to do this accurately is different than the light that it takes to do mechanical work mechanical work you need good decent lighting around but you take a drop light or or and you focus that on the area you're working on with this you really need to have a whole car lit evenly front to back so things got a couple of small things got past me because the light wasn't right the next time i do this i'm going to do all the body work outside all of the finished work outside all the prep work outside and that'll make sure that i'm going to see like here's one right here i don't know if you guys can pick it up on the camera it's like i don't know how i missed this it doesn't matter yeah it's not a show car so i'm happy with this and the color is just gorgeous come here okay can you get a close-up on this code look at this that's british racing green and now also i intended to do three coats and we ended up doing two coats and the reason for that is because i don't like it it's hard for me to judge what a light coat is so i initially intended to do a light coat and go back let it sit for a half hour go back into a second and go back into a third but what happened was after i got done with the first coat i thought i only had about half a gallon of paint left so i said all right well then we're going to do it with two heavier coats there is the entire gallon on this car so there's plenty of paint to do whatever correction or color sanding or anything like that that i have to do and i've got to wait about two weeks just like with the swinger i gotta wait about two or three weeks for the paint to really cure and then we can we can do that but i'm overall i'm thrilled with the way this thing turned out especially for the price so the total our total investment in this paint job is under 350 bucks that that's the paint filler sandpaper uh under 350 bucks even includes the spray gun and the cleaning materials like literally every single penny that it took to do this job under 350 dollars i'm thrilled with it i mean it's it's the best paid job that i've done so far and the next one is going to be even better than this time took a lot of time ballpark about 100 hours on the car it's a lot of time you know you spread that out even spread out it's still giant chunks um and you get a lot of people i can see in the comments already you know well your time is worth money right you know well you know i tell you what when you tell me how much you make sitting home watching youtube videos then i'll consider that right but i mean i'm out here i'm learning a skill i'm honing my skill i'm making action so it was 100 hours well spent and uh the next one will probably only take half that so but that's it showing off the uh you know what i call it showing off my handiwork not bad right okay now we get back to doing engine stuff i see you tomorrow
