[Music] hey everyone sam guy here from enterprise dna so i've got a really quality report to show you today and this one actually came out of one of the power bi challenges that we we run enterprise dna so and and i actually designed this one i was really trying to extend myself from a navigation um you know point of view i really wanted to challenge myself within the challenge to to build a navigation experience that was you know really high quality and i think i think i did that uh and i want to show you how how i did it so you know with power bi these days you can literally build the most incredible application like reports and i cannot recommend enough really trying to dive into figuring out how this can work because it can just improve the experience of your consumption uh of your insights by your colleagues or your teams etc uh you know just substantially so what i actually did here was um and and what it and what i'll do is i'll first actually come to the showcase page here the enterprise dna showcase so definitely check this out uh in the future if you want to um you know have a play around with this particular report because we make these available online for you to have a play around with um so i'm just going to go live demo here as that is actually sort of starting up um this inside the enterprise dna forum definitely check out our um power bi challenge thread because you can actually see all the submissions from all of those participating and we're getting you know huge interest and and uh participation in the particular challenges so there's just seriously so much to learn and you can also participate as well so definitely get involved if that's something that you um you know if you want to if you really want to learn uh some some high quality techniques around power bi your development analysis etc get involved in the challenge cannot recommend it highly enough i think it's one of the best learning experiences out there and you know i learned a lot just by developing this particular report now what i have actually done here is you'll see that like if you have a look at this entire report there's there's no doesn't look like there's any pages separate pages within the particular report it sort of all looks like one seamless web application and so what i've done is i've created this interesting look where i've got um sort of the reports area right and i can click within my report to different pages just like you would in a web application right and just in terms of the way i've set it up with really small things that i've done on each different page you know it is just a really compelling experience right this is something that you might find i feel like in a like on a website a really well designed website uh with a really high quality ui and so you know we can now do that inside of power bi if you just have the creativity if you just bring a bit of imagination um and or also find the right inspiration i'm going to show you how you can find that um you know through through our content shortly but i really like this look i think this is something that you could really leverage off so really have a think about how you set how you can use this what i've also done down here is so i've got a um up here i've got a navigation area where you can click along say different reports but then i've grouped it where i said okay well i want to actually also be able to click into different areas of my application as well and so here i've created a a different section called actions i've also created a different section called details and you see here how there's just really small things that are changing when i go to these different selections right i've changed the outline of where this blue box is to sort of signify what page you're on uh and you know it just looks you know it's really compelling hopefully you think i think i mean honestly i think this is some of the best navigation i've i've done personally and i think that you know this is something that you could literally just steal steal my idea i'm more than happy for you to do that um i think that this is you know the i'm constantly amazed with how far you can take power bi now it's quite amazing now the last thing i did is i also created this settings area and so you can actually and this is this is quite this is so unique to power bi you can create you know these pages that look like sort of like an index page right and what i've done is i've said okay i'm gonna instead of having to change the date around on every single page or say a main selection on every single page i'm gonna bring it out into the settings page and i'm gonna make selections like this and what will happen is i can then click on this and these particular by the technique i've used the sinking of the um of those particular filters is now overlaid on the rest of this report so another really cool thing that you can use and so if you click through here you can see up the top here that it's only we're only looking at a very specific region and that's another interesting visualization i used and so what it's done is it's opened up a lot of like room in my report a lot of real estate um i don't i don't know how i can just have this on one page the setting page and i don't have to use it on other other pages okay so let's just quickly go over some of the techniques that i've used here now i've used um you'll see down the bottom here that i've i've basically hidden i've hidden every single one of these pages so when you actually view it online it looks like there is no range of pages there's only one page the complaints overview pages the first thing we see when we log in to the particular application and then what happens is we click around you know through our navigation experience and then that's what takes us to different pages now in terms of how i've sort of set up the navigation or you you'll see that these are you know in power bi desktop they are actually a different page and so what you can do is you can set up the look of these pages with sort of like shapes or positions of particular items in the page you can set them up differently because they are you know a completely different page but um even though it does look like they are quite similar you know you're just making really small changes like for example you see here that i've got a line um a horizontal line here but then i've just sort of changed it up with this blue line here so when i click to this customers page all i've done is i've moved that blue line so it now looks like okay and now i'm selecting customers even though i've still got exactly the same look on the left hand side of my report here and you'll see down the bottom i'm in the customers page now okay so i really just thought a little bit outside the box here in terms of like how i wanted this to to look and then that's how i came up with you know all of these and i like i i i took inspiration from some web designs that i saw and i really just put a range of things together to make this look like a really compelling ui and then you know once you view it inside of the web you know it just looks even better because you know you don't have to hold down control to click around like you do on desktop you can literally just like click on a particular um item one other thing i did which i thought was a good sort of web type idea that i stole um you know i've got these two arrows here so i can click on this arrow and it takes me across and i've sort of just set it up to you know make make it look so seamless like that i really think that's quite cool and now all i've done in terms of like how i set this up was um you could say click on an item so say this little back arrow and you see this action area all you need to do now we have this type page navigation and so that's how you can really easily you don't even have to create bookmarks anymore for just the navigation experience you can just go type page navigation inside of action and then say which particular page you want to go to and so that's how you can you know create that navigation without having to show all the pages and the actual online experience right then okay so and that's what i did for all of these so like if i click on this you know there's a little bit of setup here because you have to make these updates on every single page but it's not too much honestly the the the the power bi team made it pretty easy if you if you can just get you know think creatively and so here again i've said okay on this particular um text box uh actually you can't actually put an action on on a text box so what i did here was i overlaid a transparent rectangle and then that transparent rectangle is overlaid on the on the words um and all i've done is said okay well if you click on that then go to the brokers the brokers page okay so that's all i've done mainly for all of those different navigation experiences then if i go to settings the only other thing that i did here was i i so what you can do is you can sync what your filters across different pages right and so if we just have a quick look up here um i think it is sink slices so if you go sync slices up here you'll see that you can have a slicer on one page or a range of different slices but then sync them up to all of the other different pages okay and that's basically what i did there so i said okay make a selection here make a selection here then if i go back into here then all of those will just automatically sync i don't need to do anything else i don't need to show the date on any any other location one thing i did decide to do though was i made sure okay the the user the consumer still needs to know what actual date selection is in the report because if you don't actually tell them then they're not going to know especially if they go into the report aren't familiar with it then you know they're not going to know what they can like the settings has been set to a certain you know date range right so you still have to be quite informative there okay so lastly before we round off uh i want to show you one other thing here so if you go to info.enterprisetna.com um this is our knowledge base right and so this is where i i got inspiration for this particular design we collect a lot of reports and just and just ui ideas like or ux ideas out out there um from anything not even from power bi from any reports or designs that we see i mean there's a lot of great websites and so what we do is we're trying to sort of collate them all in this particular section report design inspiration and so so it's just info dot enterprise dna dot co and you'll see it and then what i did was i actually found a report um if i just scroll down here i mean there is literally some amazing reports here like for example this i mean this was a design from one of the um challenge participants i mean how cool does this look right you can just come in here and just like get inspired this is this this was actually on exactly the same data set but just looked at it a totally different way amazing amazing work and i just want to see if i can find i actually got my inspiration from someone else like i literally and this that's what we've set this up for you for you to also do as well so definitely spend the time and check it out so let's do one last check down here [Music] um it's one of these around here like this ah i think it's this one actually yes it is this one so you see here what yeah this is this is the exact one i've always really see this isn't powered by but i mean you can make power bi look like this quite easily now you'll see here that i took the idea from up here around how to um create like a sort of like a menu that you can select through i i like really i like the idea of these particular arrows either side and then i had that down the left-hand side and then i had to play around with what i thought looked best and i took another some other ideas as well from this particular uh report and then i said okay well why don't we try and make that in power bi and you know you can like i i honestly don't think that there's any platform that is as flexible as power bi is right now i mean this is another one i thought i thought look really really great um and might try this another time you know you could create reports that look exactly like this in power bi easily there is no reason why you can't we have all of the shapes available all of the colors all of the visualizations for pretty much um and you just need to get creative in it and that's that's really what it comes down to okay i'm going to round off here uh enjoyed going through this one i might i might touch upon it again in future ones just to talk about like really nuanced things in regards to some other other aspects of the particular report but i really wanted to do like one good overview in this particular video just so that you could see you know how this all came together and also how you can have a play around with it so definitely check out the the showcase page the enterprise dna showcase page you can actually have a play around with this particular report uh and many others i mean these there's so many great reports here right and if you want to access the actual underlying power bi file the pbix file then um all it takes is upgrading to our main education platform uh and so definitely check that out as well if that's of interest okay talk to you very soon definitely throw the video like if you enjoyed this one i appreciate you listening and look forward to getting some more content out to you very soon so don't forget to subscribe as well okay all the best talk to you soon [Music] you
