Delete And Redact PDFs in Apple Preview

this is a short video to show you how to delete parts of a pdf now this could be because you're basically wanting to redact something like sensitive information or it could just be say like this sample document i have on the page where you might have you may have lost your original copy of a document or you know you had something had to be scanned and somebody had stamped it or written something on it and you really want the pdf without that on it and that can cause a lot of problems for people and i'm gonna show you how to get it off but i'm gonna show you how to do it in a little bit safer way and it also could work for written like when you want to take sensitive information out what we're going to do is essentially uh it's harder to do it in a pdf but if you convert it to a png file then it's trivial and then you just print it back to a pdf we'll show right here on a mac this is super easy because preview can change between pdf png jpegs at will very casually it doesn't require any third party software it's part of because the operating system the quartz graphics of the mac the all these formats are native to the operating system so to show you something the uh we'll just click on the menu you know to export and when it comes up just change it to png png is the best for this i'm fine now we've got a png version of this document so let's open that up and when it's a png file if we click on these markups you see this little marker here these tools act differently with a pdf than they do an image like a png i can go and click this little selection tool let's say i wanted to get rid of this stamp i can highlight it and then hit my delete key and it's gone now this made transparent at this point as of image and this you know you're saying well i don't need this in my pdf but when we print it back to a pdf this is going to go away you could also do this as a form of redaction say like if you had a sensitive information up here i would i would delete it first and then if you wanted to you could go in and uh draw a box over it you know draw set up a box and then you'd have to change the box to be like a color inside if you wanted to look like a typical redaction so it's clear what you're doing here so we'll show you just two ways of doing that here it's just going to disappear if you just want to clean pdf up here we're doing something that looks like a you know redaction and we want it to be clear it was a reduction i'm going to save it first and then i'm going to print as a pdf and i'm going to change this name here so you can now you see the one at the bottom it just disappeared we don't see that transparent background anymore just filled that in when it printed to a pdf and now we have a redaction up here one reason i like to do it this way and make it a png is uh even if you put it in more advanced software it's still hard to get that document back out if you don't do this it can be very hard to try to get this it could be easy to get this if you just draw i've seen tutorials on uh youtube where people just draw a black bar and print the pdf with the wrong software you can still get that original bar off you know this way i don't it's not easy to do that you should be pretty safe don't put your social security number in there like this or you know don't blame me if it doesn't work it's just for informational purposes but it's really that easy on the mac uh if i make one for windows you'll see it'll have to use third-party software it's not very easy to do this but it's frequent that you see you know extra writing on this pdf that you didn't want and you know we could do that as much as we wanted and here we got the the png file we could we could delete this whole um paragraph here if we want just highlight them hit the delete button and print it as a pdf oh let's say i want to get rid of that redaction up here just this whole thing and if i print that to pdf let's call this version three you see it's all gone you can also use some of these features to do things like signatures or make transparent images i'll get into that in a different paragraph i wanted to keep this one to just doing redactions or deletions on a pdf or other file
