as if no time has has Mia [Music] so it's not an ear infection after speaking with the audiologists we ran some diagnostic tests it appears you have ehlers dunlos syndrome it's a very rare connective tissue disorder that affects your sound conducting mechanism in your middle ear which is what's causing the ringing in your ears how is that possible I I've been healthy all my life some factors are out of our control often it's hereditary sometimes it's just bad luck you mean we may have given this to her what genetics are complicated no one here is to blame Mia have you noticed any other changes in your hearing outside of the ringing in your ears I mean I guess I turned the volume up all the way when I'm listening to music well that's normal though I mean lots of teenagers listen to their music really loud when she was still at home I can't tell you how many times I had to tell her to turn it down well let me ask you when you're turning up the music are you doing it because you want to or because you have to I guess I never thought about it before well your audiologist said you're scoring a moderately severe hearing loss now at your age that's highly unusual and very concerning but the syndrome you can cure it right I mean I mean there's got to be some sort of surgery you can do or some kind of medication unfortunately at this point in time there is no cure or treatment I don't understand what are you saying well due to the nature of the disease your hearing will continue to decline until you lose full auditory function entirely I'm going deaf yes that's crazy she can't be going deaf she's young she's in college she's a vocal education major for crying out loud there's got to be some kind of therapy program or treatment plan we can get her into look you're free to get a second opinion my recommendation is to prepare for the inevitable make this transition as smooth as possible if you want to I can refer you to support groups ASO tutor sign language you can't be serious can you guys please just stop for one moment how long it's a degenerative disease so it varies from Patient to Patient my guess is you have a few weeks if you're lucky maybe a few months [Music] music has been my life for as long as I can remember my only dream has been to sing professionally how am I supposed to do that if I can't hear anything I know this is difficult and it's not the outcome you expected but when life changes sometimes so do our dreams look just take a minute I'll go get you some brochures okay it's gonna be okay we'll get you hearing your professors and they're all in agreement that you are no longer able to keep up with the coursework if you want to continue towards your degree here it's best you look into other majors hold on let me be sure I'm understanding all of this are you kicking me out of the music program we want to give you the best chance of success there are plenty of other Majors that we offer here maybe you'd be interested in film media studies art history all still a part of the art world but none of those are music that's the reason I came here or went to college in the first place and we want to find a way for you to stay your professors and your peers speak so highly of you before last month's event you were the top performer in this program but you can't pass your classes given everything going on in your personal life I don't want to study anything else though well music has been day one and now you're threatening to take that away from me your professors and I just don't see [Music] we're the couch tend to be judges I know I remember if there was a way to change the past if you could have the surgery if there was a way for you to hear and share your music again I would do anything to just as heartbroken as the day she was diagnosed yeah but she didn't just lose her hearing she lost everything that mattered to her to help but I can't don't be so hard on yourself we've seen so many experts they've tried everything the best thing we can do now is try and forget it I mean there's no way she can make into music if she can't even listen to what she's seeing but she didn't just listen to music she felt it if I could just give her that feeling again maybe we could get our daughter back I think we have to accept that this is the way things are now sooner we accept that the sooner she will too yeah I just returned something real quick and then I'll be home for lunch love you bye I don't understand how would it work I spoke with the man at the music store this will show you your tone pitch everything theoretically using this you could sing but the doctor said that would be impossible they said you would never hear again not that you would never sing again so I would sing without hearing music or what I sound like that doesn't make sense you don't need to hear something to imagine it he went to school for this now you have a frame of reference whether you hear or not do this this is how you get back on stage how are you get back to your dream [Music] I haven't been able to sing in years though I mean yes I have the training but it's totally different when you can actually hear the notes in A Beat okay so it's a new relationship with music but something different is better than nothing right it maybe you're hearing left you but your voice never did so who knows with enough practice Maybe you could be ready to audition for America's Got Talent next month if this did work who says America's Got Talent would even want me thousands of singers go up for these auditions ones who can actually hear the music they're singing because when you have passion people will stop and listen to what you have to say or sing correct at the end of the day this is up
