whopperworks comes in with a great question 32 gigabytes of ram if the two choices are 3200 cl 16 for 90. or 3600 cl 18 for 100 what's the best choice and i'm sure that's a very common question that a lot of people ask because well let me back up a second because some people may not know this higher ram speeds are and this is pretty intuitive better 3600 is faster than 3200 that's very straightforward that's not really complicated great assuming it's supported by your motherboard and cpu but assuming that's the case 3600 is better the cast ratings are a bit more interesting cl 18 is slower than cl 16 they work in reverse it's the number of latency address cycles good you know i can't remember off the top of my head what k stands for cass and ras it's it's uh they actually they're acronyms they stand for something and i'm sitting here struggling trying to think of what they stand for but it doesn't matter at the moment the essence is it takes more clock cycles to access the 3600 at cl18 so the faster ram is offset by the cpu having to wait more clocks in order to access it or the memory controller i should say it's not really the cpu even though it's on the cpu today but that's neither here into there you can buy 3600 cl 16 but it costs more it's not going to be 99 the truth of the matter is that the same memory modules they actually really only make a few memory modules what they do is they mass produce identical memory modules and then they put them on these mass automated testers it's all big huge automated factory basically it's just beamed exactly it's just binned and what they're doing is they're testing what's the maximum clock speed that it's within whatever standards they said of of durability dependability well you know whether or not it's um has any bit errors etc and they test to see what the maximum speed it will support and then they test to see what the maximum cast rating it'll support and then they build some buffer into that because they know it's going to be installed on a wide variety of systems on different motherboards and different cpus amd versus intel it's going to be mixed with other brand so they give themselves a bit buffer because here's why the memory manufacturers give themselves some buffer if you order a memory kit from new egg amazon anybody else and you get it and you stick it in your system and you have a problem what's your first thought going to be oh the memory i just bought's defective you're going to take it out you're going to send it back this creates an rma cycle this costs the manufacturer money it may not be the memory's fault it may be your system's fault you didn't configure it right or you have a motherboard that doesn't support it or you're mixing ram but a lot of users don't really think about it they just go oh it's it's ram it works right that's that's that's the extent of the thought process you can take most 3200 cl 16 kits and you can manually adjust their timings to 3600 and raise the co rating to 18 and they'll work you can take most 3600 cl18 kits slow them down to 3200 lower the cast down to 16 and they'll work if you're really lucky you could take a you could take either one of them and run them at 3600 cl 16 and they'll work if you have a good memory controller you're not mixing ram and the sun's gamma rays shine on you that particular day the 3600 cl 16 kits out of the box are just better binned memory modules that are just guaranteed to do that correct all of this is like arguing about tread patterns on tires it is true that there are tires with better tread patterns than others it is true that in laboratory testing certain premium expensive z-rated pirellis and goodyear's and michelins have a superior tread pattern that works this much better around a track in the rain that works on a drag strip in the rain that works in in mud and snow better than another tire and it is true that a better tire is better than crappy cheap no-name generic tires however if you have a a cheap basic car it this is like buying 250 dollar tires to put on your honda civic you sort of missed the point if you want to improve your experience there's a lot of other things you should spend money on i mean you could only put so nice of a tire on a basic car yes and so if you've got a ryzen 5 3600 sure you can put ddr4 3600 on there but how many people do you think spend megabucks to buy high speed low latency ram to put on their ryzen 5 when they could have spent that same money just about a ryzen 7. probably a few people from reading chat because you could easily spend 50 percent more to buy the high speed low latency ram yep an extra 50 sometimes 75 dollars it can be that would have bought you a ryzen 7 in the long run i would much rather have a ryzen 7 3700x and 3200 cl 16 then a ryzen 5 3600 and 3600 cl 16. cl 18 16 18 14 i don't actually really give a darn 3600. let me put this another way i have all the kits literally i have all the memory kits i have multiple memory kits above 4000 i have a really really nice g skill kit it is 4266 cl19 okay cl 19. do you know what i have in my personal i9 gaming computer at home uh 32 gigs of um cl 16 3200 i have 3200 on my machine at home i have three separate 4 000 plus ram kit sitting upstairs and it is not worth my time to install them and i have an rtx 2070 super on a 34 inch ultra wide on a 99 900k you do and it doesn't make any real world difference i can find a benchmark and i can show a graph well look it's three frames per second faster here and it's three percent difference here i mean if i want to show a difference in ram i can there are so many other things that affect your performance in the real world this ram is one of those things that that is one of the these ram companies are making a mint off of selling everybody this expensive stuff yeah they are the only people who possibly should actually care about this would be competitive gamers if you've got one of those 1080p 360 hertz monitors and you're a professional fortnight player or a league of legends player and you are on a team and competitive yep i would revise my argument but this comes back to my general advice where i cover 80 of the market correct not the extreme high there are people who actually could say i need that ram correct they are probably not watching us well cc 420 is flexing with their cr-14 3600 so you never know [Music] cool [Music] you
