um does the amount of vram matter more for resolution for quality settings oh for resolution or quality settings or do they both matter together just hanging upside down here from australia no worries well both um vram matters because as the resolution increases all of the world detail that has to be loaded in there increases uh some games don't change the world detail at higher resolutions especially older games that were never designed for 4k they just have a data set for 1080p and there's nothing to be added but other games will as the resolution goes up put more into the world more triangles more polygons more more um and i'm not talking texture detail i'm talking world detail but then there's textures the higher quality texture the more vram and textures are by far where your vram goes so like if you're loading up here's a good example watchdogs legion oh yes 4k ultra textures you don't have to run ultra detail you can set it to high detail but ultra textures and so the world textures will look gorgeous but a few details of the world will be taken out to keep your frame rate decent textures do not hurt your frame rate nearly as much as world detail shadows anti-aliasing ray tracing um volumetric effects cloud effects those affect your frame rate far more than texture detail does because once textures are loaded in the gpu just has to paint the textures over the polygons it's the drawing of the polygons that takes the most amount of time right and so whether you do a higher quality coat of paint altra textures does not cut your frame rate in half watchdogs legion will not run 4k textures at ultra texture detail on an eight gigabyte card without running out of vram dope it'll do very high it'll be very high but it will not do ultra and that's at 4k at 1440p ultra watchdog's legion is loading a different set of textures and then it only needs eight gigs of vram so 1440p ultra watchdogs legion eight gigs is enough but at 4k ultra it's not here we got and lest anybody think that my comment is related to like just something i saw in allocated that's not even me tested although i did play with it last night and i posted and tweeted a bunch of pictures i did um tim over at hardware unboxed has done that analysis um and they tend to be pretty good at that so they do which is also why i think the 30 80 with 10 gigs of vram is going to age really poorly because here's a game that needs 10 gigs now right now now it's at 4k ultra and if you're not at 4k ultra i mean that's fine but it's the first what do you think it's gonna be the last well you think it's gonna stop we're gonna go backwards it's it's funny somebody said to me that um my comments on vram and main system ram usage like regarding horizon zero dawn they're like well that's just that game uh most games don't need that well of course most games don't need that shadow of the tomb raider is two and a half frickin years old division two is two years old ghost recon is a year and a half old no freaking kitten they don't need it they're not new but why in the world do people think that when a new game comes out that starts needing it and they go well that's not optimized that's just that game you can't use that argument for that game that's the future folks exactly that's where it's going you know the joke will it run crisis will it run watch dog lesions yeah but the will it running crisis came about because crisis was that game that destroyed hardware of course if 12 13 14 years ago you didn't want to run crisis you could ignore it but how long was it until normal games reached crisis level of details now it was a graphics card or two in a couple of years but we worked our way into it to where all games became that why is that so hard to understand i mean when i look at the past 20 plus years of graphics cards it's just plain as day yep you couldn't have a beacon in the sky any more clear than this i am owner of an original 3d fx voodoo from 1996 that i bought a voodoo too then i bought a nvidia tnt2 i owned these during that era i went through the geforce line i had some amd cards watching all the games get more complex watching direct x6 directx 7 directx 8 which was the last on windows xp then the move to directx 9 with windows 7. the move to the universal shaders with the 8 series on nvidia and the 20 series on ati because it wasn't amd at the time going through all of this watching vram increases watching the changes over the years what you think watchdogs legion and horizon zero dawn are like outliers and games will need less next year cyberpunk why do people think that i don't know i do i don't understand [Music] you
