Now most people's favorite detail in this scene is Obi-wan switching between his signature stances before eventually settling on Qui-gon's stance, but personally one of my favorite details about this scene is actual when it occasionally focus's on Obi'wan's face. Like when Maul slashes the ground shouting "What do you have!" and the camera focus on Obi'wan you can clearly see how much he pities Maul and doesn't want to fight him even after all that Maul has done to him. Then Maul starts questioning why Obi-wan is on the Tatooine and when it switches back to Obi-wan's face it almost like his face is saying "don't." and then when Maul figures out Obi-wan was protecting something you can see his eye's narrow almost like he's saying "Damit i didn't want this but fine" and then he activates his Lightsaber.
Like man this whole scene is easly one of the best thing's to come out of all of Star Wars.
For anyone who wants some additional info about this scene, check out this video of Sam Witwer (Darth Maul) talking about what the characters are going through.
So along with what the other commenter said about Obi Wan taking Qui Gon's stance, the way Obi Wan kills Maul is great. He takes Qui Gon's stance in order to trick Maul, as he starts out seeming like he's gonna fight Maul the same way Qui Gon did when he died, and Maul even lifts his saber to block him the same way he killed Qui Gon (Qui Gon hit the left side of his saber, Maul blocked it, hit Qui Gon in the face then stabbed him). Maul tries to counter Obi Wan in the same way but Obi Wan instead cuts through his saber, and him. Its like 3 attacks but its one of the coolest fights in Star Wars imo
While everybody's talking about the fight and how Obi Wan uses Qui-gon's stance to beat Maul, I want to talk about the little bit after Obi-wan wins.
Maul drops to his knees and he immediately rushes in to catch and cradle the guy. The person who killed his master, who's taken so much from him. The sympathy in that tiny movement is huge. And then Maul asks about 'the chosen one', and Obi Wan responding to him honestly shows more of that. Even though the only reason he fought the guy was to keep him from spilling about Luke once he figured it out, now that he's dying he can be honest.
"He will avenge us." That line is fucking bone-chilling, almost entirely because of the word choice at the end here. Maul, in this moment, sees Obi Wan as an equal, as someone who's lived through all the same shit he has, the Clone Wars, Order 66, the Empire forming. And it's even more chilling because Maul isn't just talking about him and Obi Wan. He's referring to the Jedi as a whole, along with the Sith. He's talking about all Force users, and he's actually equating them here. For all that the Sith talk about being superior to the Jedi, and the Jedi talk about the Sith being clouded by hatred and anger, that the Dark Side always leads to evil, in that final moment Maul lets go of the rage. And I think that's a really cool thing to see.
They're talking about Star Wars right now on the podcast and I am mad at the lack of respect for the animated shows. They already DID all that you want for Star Wars, Chewie and Fuckface.
I live that itβs only 3 moves and that obi wan changes to his master fighting style
I think these crazy instant death beam fights should all be this tense and short. Itβs some samurai shit.
never bothered with Clone Wars (except for the animated movie) or Rebels.
...are they good?
This is one of the best endings for a villain ever.
