Daniel Tiger: Hi, Neighbor! Today, we're meeting a new friend at school! Then we're going to the clock factory for a different kind of chime time! Do you like meeting new friends? It's me, Daniel Tiger. I just got to school. Come inside! Teacher Harriet: Come on over for Circle Time! Daniel: Circle time! O The Owl: I'll sit here, hoo hoo! Prince Wednesday: Yeah, here! Daniel: Look! Someone new is sitting next to Teacher Harriet. I wonder who it is? Teacher Harriet: Class, I want you to meet Max. Max is my nephew, which means I'm his aunt! Prince Wednesday: You're an aunt? Teacher Harriet: Yes! I'm a teacher and an aunt! Max is visiting me, so I wanted him to meet all of you. Kids: (talking and chattering) Teacher Harriet: You know what, class? That's too loud for Max. It's okay Max. I know what might help. Prince Wednesday, could you bring me that blanket? Prince Wednesday: Sure! Whoa! Why is this blanket so heavy? Teacher Harriet: Sometimes, Max likes a heavy blanket, like this. It makes him feel like he's getting a nice cozy hug. Daniel: But why does Max need it? Are you cold? Katerina Kittycat: Are you sleepy, meow meow? Teacher Harriet: No. Max is autistic, which means that some things about him are different than you. Like the way he calms down. Now that you're feeling calmer, Max, ready to show them our book? Max: That's my book! Teacher Harriet: I've told Max about each of you and we made this book together called "Max Visits School." Let's read it together, so you can learn more about him. Max is a new friend. He is visiting school today. He's going to meet new friends. Max: Daniel Tiger, O The Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, Jodi Platypus, Miss Elaina. Kids: Wow! Hey! That's me! Teacher Harriet: Max needs quiet voices. Loud sounds bother his ears. Miss Elaina: Well, we're not being too loud! Teacher Harriet: Everyone is different. Something that might sound okay to you, might be too loud for Max. ♪ When a friend needs different things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things you can do. ♪ Miss Elaina: What can we do? Teacher Harriet: If you see Max cover his ears, it means it's a little too loud for him. And you can move back to give him some more space, and talk in a soft voice. Right Max? Let's keep reading. Max likes to have his own space. He needs time before he's ready to play with new friends. Max likes to share the things he's interested in like buses... and bugs! Max: Bugs! That's a roly-poly bug! Roly-poly bugs roll up into a ball when they feel scared. Daniel: Really? I saw a roly-poly bug one time! Max, where are you going? Miss Elaina: Can he come back? I want Max to tell us more about bugs. Prince Wednesday: Me too! Teacher Harriet: Max needs time to get comfortable in our classroom. I'm going to let Max look out the window while we finish up Circle Time. Max and his new friends have a great day at school. The end. And now, it's Choice Time. Daniel: Tigertastic! O: Let's play, Hoo hoo! Katerina/Jody: ...Choice Time! Daniel: Where's Max? I want to play with him. Ooh, Max is in the Block Corner. Maybe we can build together! Hi Max! Can I play with you? I know. We can build something tall! A castle! ♪ (playful music) ♪ Max? Do you want to help me build a castle? Do you want to play with me, Max? Why isn't Max answering me? Teacher Harriet: Well, Daniel. Sometimes he needs more time to understand the question and decide how to answer. Let's give him some time. Max: I like buses. I like city buses and school buses and double-decker buses. Daniel: Oh! I like playing buses too! But, I'm not playing buses now, I'm building a castle! My castle is right there. I made a pointy roof. See? Max: Double-decker bus. I like to sit on the top. Daniel: Why does Max keep talking about buses? I want him to play castle with me! Teacher Harriet: Sometimes when Max is really excited about something, he only wants to talk about that one thing. Daniel: Oh, but... if Max just wants to talk about buses, does that mean he can't play with me? I really want to play with him. Teacher Harriet: ♪ When a friend needs ♪ ♪ different things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things you can do. ♪ Maybe you could try playing something that you both like. Daniel: ♪ When a friend needs ♪ ♪ different things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things ♪ ♪ you can do. ♪ Well, I like building, and Max likes buses. So, maybe instead of building a castle, I could build a bus station! Teacher Harriet: Give it a try! Daniel: Here's where all the buses can come in. More blocks! Vroom-vroom, beep-beep! In to-- --the garage! City buses, school buses, double-decker buses-- Hey, do you want to make-believe with me? Let's make-believe that we're riding on all kinds of buses! ♪ (playful music) ♪ ♪ First the bus pulls up ♪ ♪ And the driver lets us in ♪ ♪ We give that driver our bus ticket ♪ ♪ And our bus ride begins! ♪ Yeah! ♪ We're riding the city bus ♪ ♪ And we're zooming around the town ♪ Hey Look! It's Max over there on a double decker tour bus... ♪ Touring everywhere ♪ ♪ And when we're riding the school bus ♪ ♪ And we're zooming around the town ♪ ♪ When we get to school ♪ ♪ We'll grab our bags and hop off ♪ ♪ At the bus stop! ♪ Wasn't that grr-ific? Max: Bus 547, coming into the station. Right on schedule. Daniel: Max does want to play with me! Ok bus, you can park in this spot! Max: Bus 547 in spot 547! Bus 442 coming into the station. Daniel: Right on schedule! Garage door opening! Clang! Clang! Clang! Oh oh! Clang! Clang! Clang! Katerina: Hi Daniel! Would you like to come to our tea party, meow meow? O The Owl: We're going to have tea and snacks, Hoo hoo. Daniel: Sure, I'll come! Katerina: Oh, goody. Come on, meow meow! Daniel: Wait! You forgot to invite Max. Katerina: Oh, I thought Max only wants to play buses? But, maybe he wants to play tea party too. Hi Max. We're having a tea party... and we want you to come! O The Owl: You can come later. Or now. Or later. Hoo hoo! Daniel: I'll wait for you ok, Max? I like playing buses with you. ♪ (soft music) ♪ ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ There are some things ♪ ♪ you can do! ♪ ♪ Today I met a brand new friend, ♪ ♪ And learned just what he needs. ♪ ♪ He takes his time with something new, ♪ ♪ He likes to watch and see. ♪ ♪ I can play the way he likes, ♪ ♪ And that's okay! ♪ ♪ My new friend likes to have fun, ♪ ♪ In his own way. ♪ ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ There are some things ♪ ♪ you can do! ♪ ♪ Sometimes noises seem too loud, ♪ ♪ And that can make him frown. ♪ ♪ But he has his special things, ♪ ♪ That can help to calm him down. ♪ ♪ I can play quieter, And that's okay! ♪ ♪ He likes to have fun ♪ ♪ In his own way. ♪ ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ There are some things ♪ ♪ you can do! ♪ ♪ (soft music) ♪ Max: Bus 547 driving to the tea party. Right on schedule! Daniel: Max does want to play tea party, he's just playing his own way. With buses! Beep beep! Right behind you. Max: Beep beep! Bus 547 arriving at the tea party. Katerina: You came! Daniel: Yup! Right on schedule. Max: Right on schedule. Daniel: I like my new friend Max, and I'm glad we found a way to play with him. Ugga Mugga. Daniel: Let's see what some of our neighbors are doing today! Mom: Alright...1, 2, 3 Okay, can you untangle your feet for me, please? Daniel: This is Gabriel! And this is Christopher! Gabriel uses this to help him walk. ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things ♪ ♪ you can do! ♪ Mom: How about if you go up the stairs here? Are you going to crawl with bro bro, Christopher? That's very nice of you. Daniel: Christopher is Gabriel's identical twin brother. Mom: Ok, 1, 2, 3! Go go go! Daniel: That means that Christopher and Gabriel were born on the same day! And they look alike! They play together. And laugh together. (giggles) They both like being pushed on the swing! ♪ (playful music) ♪ They even have fun falling down! (giggles) Mom: Pull yourself up! Daniel: Sometimes they play differently. Mom: Good boy! Daniel: They have fun together. Mom: Woooahhh! Daniel: Gabriel likes to ride the merry-go-round while Christopher pushes. When someone needs different things than you, there are things you can do! ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things ♪ ♪ you can do! ♪ I like meeting new neighbors! ♪ (playful music) ♪ Daniel: Hi Neighbor! Tick Tock! Tick Tock! It's me, Daniel Tiger! Look at what I made. It's a tiger clock, see? My dad helped me make it, because today is... Dad Tiger/Daniel: Neighborhood Clock Day! Dad Tiger: Oh boy, I can't wait to show you the new clock I made for Chime Time. Daniel: A new clock? Dad Tiger: Yup! Nobody's ever seen it. Except for me. Daniel: Wooow! I wonder what kind of clock it is? Maybe a cuckoo clock, with a little bird that comes out and says Cuckoo! Cuckoo! (giggles) Heeeey, do you want to make-believe with me? Let's make-believe that we could play inside a cuckoo clock! Trolley: (ding-ding) Daniel: It's Teacher Harriet and her nephew Max! Trolley: (ding-ding) Dad Tiger: Hello, Teacher Harriet. Hi Max! Teacher Harriet: Hi Tigers! Trolley: (ding ding) Daniel: Hi Max! (whispers) Dad, Max didn't say 'hi' back to me. Teacher Harriet: Sometimes he needs a little more time than you do to get comfortable. ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things ♪ ♪ you can do. ♪ Dad Tiger: Let's give him more time. Daniel: Oh, okay! Max: I have five clocks at my house... Daniel: Wow! Max: I want to see all the clocks at the Clock Factory. Teacher: Max has never been to the Clock Factory before, or seen Chime Time, so this will be new for him. Trolley: (ding ding) Daniel: Thanks, Trolley! Dad Tiger: Wow! So many neighbors are already here! I guess it's time to start! Daniel: Tigertastic! Dad Tiger: Welcome everyone to Neighborhood Clock Day! Come on inside, and we'll begin our special Chime Time! Elaina: I'm so so so excited! Boomerific! Daniel, Look! My rocket ship clock is ready to... blast off! In five... Elaina: Four... Max: Four. Elaina: Three... Max: Three. Elaina: Two... Max. Two. Elaina/Max: One... Daniel/Elaina: Blast offfffffff! (giggles) Prince Wednesday: Hi Max. Wanna see the clock I made? Max: Oh. A rock clock. Prince Wednesday: Rock clock...Rock clock! Hey! That rhymes! Max: Rock clock. Tick tock. Rock clock. Tick tock. Max/Daniel/Prince W: Rock clock! Tick tock! Max: Rock clock! Tick tock! Daniel: (giggles) I'm glad Max is here for Chime Time! Max... You can give your bus clock to my dad, and he'll hang it up for you. Max: My clock. Daniel: Dad! Max didn't hang up his clock yet! Max: My clock. Dad Tiger: Well, that's okay. It doesn't look like Max wants his clock hung up on the wall, Daniel. Daniel: But...why not? Teacher Harriet: Sometimes when Max is trying something new, he needs to take more time until he feels comfortable. Something we can do is let him hold onto his clock, until he decides he's ready to hang it up. Dad Tiger: Take as much time as you need, Max. Ok! Is everybody ready for Chime Time? Kids: Yay! I am! Teacher Harriet: Oop, here are your headphones, Max. Miss Elaina: Ooh! Can I have a turn with the headphones too? Teacher Harriet: No, we can't take turns with these. Max needs them in case Chime Time is too loud for him. They make things quieter. Elaina: But the loud sounds are what make Chime Time so so so fun! Teacher Harriet: Mhm! But not to Max. ♪ When a friend needs different ♪ ♪ things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things ♪ ♪ you can do. ♪ These are for Max, but if you really want some, you can make your own pretend headphones! Teacher/Elaina: (giggle) Teacher Harriet: There you go! Dad Tiger: Ok everyone, it's chime time!! Daniel: Oooh! Elaina: (giggles) Chime time! Daniel: Max, look! All of the clocks are chiming, and the lights are so pretty! Max: No, no, no... Elaina: I love love love how blink-y they are! Max: No, no, no... No, no, no! Daniel: Is Max ok? Doesn't he like Chime Time? Max, look at all the clocks! You love clocks! Teacher Harriet: The bright blinking lights might be a little too much for Max. Dad Tiger: Ohh. Let me help with that. Teacher Harriet: We're going to take a break outside. C'mon, Max. Daniel: Max isn't going to get to see the new clock, and he loves clocks! I wish Max could still do Chime Time. Dad Tiger: I think the bright lights and loud sounds upset him. Max needs things to be a little calmer. Daniel: ♪ When a friend needs ♪ ♪ different things than you, ♪ ♪ there are some things you can do. ♪ What can we do? Dad Tiger: Maybe Max needs a calmer Chime Time. C'mon, Daniel. Teacher Harriet: Breathe in-- breathe out. Max: (exhales) Daniel: Max... are you ok? Max: Clocks... I want to see the clocks. Dad Tiger: What would you think about doing a different kind of Chime Time? Without the bright blinking lights. I even have a special chime we can ring ourselves. Teacher Harriet: Ohhh. That way you can make it as loud or as soft as you want! Daniel: (whispers) Tigertastic! Come on, Max. We can do Chime Time a different way! Teacher Harriet: That all sounds wonderful! ♪ (soft music) ♪ Dad Tiger: Thank you, Max. Daniel: Look! Max is ready to give his clock to my Dad! Dad Tiger: Welcome to Calm Chime Time... ...where you are going to be the quiet chimes! (chimes ringing softly) (chimes ringing softly) Miss Elaina: Oooh... Dad Tiger: And if you're feeling really excited, instead of clapping loudly, we can show our excitement like this. (palms rubbing softly) (palms rubbing softly) (chimes ringing softly) Daniel: Woah! I'm on a clock. Daniel: Max looks so happy! It feels good to do something different to make a friend feel good. I like having a friend like Max... and a friend like you, neighbor. Ugga Mugga. Amira: When we play bus station, the buses always run on the same schedule. Max: Yellow bus needs to get to the station in 3, 2, 1. Amira: Here, Max! I found this blue bus! Max: No no no. Green bus comes before blue bus. Amira: Ohhh, that's right. Where is the green bus? Max: Can't say 3, 2, 1 until the green bus gets to the station. Amira: I'm on it, Max! Look what I found! Beep Beep! Max: 3, 2, 1. (honk honk) Amira: Beep Beep! Max, we did it! (giggles) Max: The blue bus will go over this bridge to the station... in 3... 2... Amira: Uh oh. Hmmm, let's see... Max/Amira: 3, 2, 1! (honk honk) Amira: Beep Beep! Max: Right on schedule. Amira: I like playing with my little brother Max. He knows so much about buses... and keeping them on schedule!
