the defiant celebration of the fun bunch the heart and soul of staubach the stoic genius of tom landry the intense leadership of theisman and a driven george allen i deliberately started the rivalry i felt that the redskins had been in last place they had one winning season in 15 years they hadn't been to the playoffs in 26 years and we had to beat dallas [Music] just remember this 40 men together can't lose okay they didn't charlie taylor's touchdown gave allen and his skins an nfc championship [Music] on this thanksgiving day an unforgettable chapter in nfl history was authored by an obscure rookie quarterback named clint longley [Music] his last victory was vintage roger staubach trailing by 13 less than two minutes to play staubach willed his cowboys to two touchdowns in the season-ending victory knocking his arch rivals out of the playoffs [Music] [Applause] the fan's request was honored and the redskins destroyed the cowboys and went on to capture a world championship [Music] eleven months ago they met in what seemed like a meaningless game but in a short period of time the sporting world would realize the significance of a dallas triumph it was the cowboys last victory and the final win of tom landry's 29 season career jerry jones has vowed to rebuild one of sport's most glamorous franchises the task falls to head coach jimmy johnson whose search for that elusive first victory continues tonight [Music] might be his ninth loss in nine weeks at miami it took him five years to lose nine games one of the nfl's major success stories is on the opposite sideline joe gibbs has won three nfc championships two super bowls in his first eight seasons the redskins will receive the opening kick and roger rouzek tees it up at the 35 yard line if you have never been to a cowboy game no matter what their records if you like pro football it is an experience you should not miss joe howard deep to receive the kick ricky sanders back with him sanders takes it at the 11 across the 20 to the 21-yard line [Applause] doug williams will come out to see his first action of the season 10 weeks after back surgery and after only two days of practice with the team he has an explosive offensive talent around him gerald riggs is back after missing last week with a bad arch riggs is second in the conference in rushing the line is missing two injured starters both all pros another all-pro mark may is playing with a broken wrist you know if i'm in this kind of a situation everybody's expecting the red stick kids to come out and run to protect deb williams i would think they may just try and go up top right now with the wide receivers and get an early lead [Applause] finer in motion riggs gets the first carry picked up a couple near the 25-yard line on defense dallas has been unable to stop the run up front too tall jones will be going in his 200th consecutive starting game but he's virtually a starter in name only as his career winds down eugene lockhart may have evolved into the best player on this team he's on the way to a club record for tackles and is the cowboys best hitter the secondary has produced one interception in eight games everson walls who led the league in thefts three times has yet to swipe one in 89. [Applause] williams with his first call over the middle a month with a great catch monk at the 38-yard line covered by vince albritton you don't know how important this is for doug williams to get a completion first of all it was not a well-thrown ball it was high monk's just going to work against williams they're playing a soft double zone that means the corners up all britain is back and he sits down in the soft hole but look at how high he gets up in the air to make the catch that's what you need you need the receivers to help you out if you're a quarterback coming back and you can see how excited doug is when we talked to him earlier in the week he was just like a kid who'd gotten a new toy two tight ends warren and tice for the redskins [Music] riggs riggs has missed two games and part of another with injuries this year he is still second in the nfc and rushing and a lot of people feel he would be the number one rusher in pro football right now if you've been healthy i agree mike i mean here's a guy's got 658 yards coming in as you can see it's second in the nfc and he's missed so many games in this offense if he was healthy no one else would carry the football for the redskins great player for a long time in atlanta getting a chance to star a little bit more with the redskins of course with more exposure second and five finer to a win cowboys come on the blitz and ricks can't get out of the backfield ken norton number 51 was there as he came through a gap and made the tackle well this is the thing that the cowboys necessarily don't want to do they did it in the first game against the redskins they blitzed a fair amount they got hurt bad they're going to try and play the soft zone pick their spots to come after williams and put pressure on they cannot stop the running game with just lining up with four down linemen and four linebackers and play it saw they're gonna shut the runs down they're gonna have to blitz ball spotted at the 38 at third and nine washington on its opening possession warren number 85 sports out art monk comes to the near side with clark sanders in motion [Applause] four-man rush williams with time over the middle dropped by clark almost intercepted by bill bates right in his hands and he couldn't hold it there is a flag down the wide receiver was in motion illegal procedure there you see the illegal procedure motion the wide receiver coming in motion turned up too quickly gary clark just he just drops his ball it's a little hook he bounces away from bill bates bates misses it clark misses it's not that cold out there i can't understand why the ball is bouncing around and you have probably the three best wide receivers on any team in pro football in this club you don't see them drop too many ralph mojenko into punt and derek shepard the former the former saint key of the questionable hands but the great return ability is deep mojenko drives him back to the seventh nice return by shepard across the 20 a 52-yard punt a 13-yard return joe mickels on special teams for washington makes the tackle okay in the nation's capital dallas with its first possession at its own 23-yard line steve walsh leads them leads them out paul palmer the starting running back he is the only setback as they go with three wide outs on first and then [Applause] waltz to throw on first down big rush over the middle and kelvin martin couldn't hold the pass at the 27-yard line walsh the starter the rookie from miami learning on the job with troy aikman injured he has five touchdown passes but nine interceptions dallas is very thin at the skill positions between trades and injuries there's little offense left kelvin martin is the only wide receiver who was with the club in training camp tom rafferty has played more games than any cowboy offensive lineman ever the unit's about average better at pass blocking than on the running game second and ten [Music] paul palmer with his first carry and wilbur marshall has an ankle maybe a yard that defense has been soft this year but charles mann is still playing at a level that sent him to two-straight pro bowl wilbur marshall who made that tackle has become more of a factor in his second year but his impact still far less than it was with chicago the secondary is vulnerable especially with daryl green's injury alvin walton the club's leading tackler is far better at run support than coverage and now with barry wilburn out of there on the unable to perform list for personal reasons you have aj johnson the rookie starting at corner third and long and waltz over the middle his receiver stumbled a flag is down martin and brian davis were tangled up and brian davis really hot about it but martin obviously lost his balance well what brian davis is saying is that ball is uncatchable i don't know how you can determine uncatchableness illegal contact number 34 on the defense five yard funneling automatic first down so you can't you cannot determine on an uncatchable ball if the receiver is tied up with somebody i mean how far is he going to run down the field you see the left side of your screen come in the lower left side he's got his right hand on him he actually bumps him and hangs him up before the ball it would have been uncatchable or could it have been catchable if he was still running i mean that's the question that they have to ask you see brian trying to plead his case to me if you go by that rule you just not knock down every wide receiver and say it was uncancerous i hate the rule dallas with his first first down [Music] johnston the pullback talk about an underused position daryl johnston has gained nine yards this year broderick sergeant has gained 11. and wydell is into it a little bit you know you can talk about the fact that the the cowboys and the excuse me the giants and the redskins have started a rivalry now eagles and that the cowboys aren't playing well that this rivalry doesn't have the same intensity that is not true this rivalry will never go away this is something that was created by george allen and will live on forever well if you hate somebody it tends to last a while you know you don't go to sleep one morning and say okay i like them and there's a guy who's gonna have to learn how to live with it jimmy johnson this year he's learning to live with a lot like owen eight second and nine for dallas walsh to throw man got it charles mann who ate him alive in the first game all over waltz right now charles mann has such a quick first step this is where he gets it done on dave weddell what it's the first step out of the box well dell doesn't stand a chance he barely gets a right shoulder on him in a right forearm that's how quick charles man comes out of the blocks weidel is starting for kevin gogan who is out with a bruised toe wydell a second year player out of boston college no fun to come in off the bench and face charles mann he is a great player third and 13. [Applause] walsh to the shotgun blitz he read it beautifully goes to martin he couldn't hold that was a mistake by alvin walton he went for the ball and missed it and kelvin martin couldn't hold the pass great read by walsh though well walsh does a good job actually they baited him into this you see todd bowles come up the middle they bait walsh into throwing this no one alvin walton is hanging but calvin martin almost makes he turns a near impossible play into a big one now they've put two balls on the ground for walk they've got to catch a tough play for him to make him feel better mike saxon fourth in the conference in cunning will kick to joe howard waiting in the zone 30 low line drive howard steps up to the 33. got it back near the 40-yard line not a good kick by saxon 41 yards a return of seven but there's a flag down and more pushing and shoving gordon mccarter talking with the other officials on his staff and here's the call number 78 kicking team illegally downfield number 88 on the receiving team holding during the kick the penalties offset repeat fourth down all right we'll do it all over again and saxon will have a chance to get off a better kick all that has done is give your your punt cover team a chance to actually this works to the benefit of the redskins because now they can see how the cowboys are not sophisticated enough they haven't been together long enough to be able to make adjustments now they can see how they're coming down the field and possibly howard will now have a better idea of a lane to pick and get more out of the return phil howard played with notre dame jackson gets a much better kick this time howard all the way back to his 21-yard line good block by brian davis and he took it back over to 25. so the cowboys benefit the draws just fine well you know why because they're trying to run the football and this is not the actually this is not the strength of the football teams the redskins have got three best receivers on the field at one time in the league they're going to have to start throwing if they're going to win the cowboys cannot run the football so they're going to have to throw if they stand a chance to win cowboys haven't been able to stop the round though last in the league it's been rushing defense as well as scoring defense play action the finer williams floats it down the middle he had sanders out there by a half a step past horton but he overthrew it there's mark griffin who has been replaced by doug williams and joe gibbs said very candidly listen mark was not the only reason we did not win last week against the raiders but i have to tell you something when you look at that graphic and know that you've been sacked 12 times you've fumbled 11 and lost seven of them that would set a coach to start thinking about doing something different fumbling 11 times and 12 sacks is one of the most amazing statistics i've ever seen scary especially for a guy who played williams is one out of three throwing so far facing second and ten gary clark wide open across the 40 against that soft dallas zone defense of course that's about all dallas can play the one thing that jimmy johnson saw when he came here was a woeful lack of team speed they just can't run and you can't replace it on the run most of the a lot of the players that are starting for them defensively and offensively weren't even training camp there's a nice move by gary clark he looks back like he's going to go to sleep a little bit williams falls down can't keep his feet and clark separates and gets about five yards difference makes an easy catch first down redskins at the 43 clark at 5-9 very dangerous after he catches the ball redskins all three wide receivers in there now near side to monk the veteran of the group across midfield into dallas territory art monk number seven all time in the nfl that is 617 catches in his career he is set to pass ozzie newsome and raymond berry the next two guys up the line and when you think of those names of course ozzy's still playing in cleveland raymond berry the coach in new england and raymond berry was i think the standard of what a wide receiver was in greatness in the national football league art monk has proven time and time again that he is in a class by himself in this league riggs and fine are in together on second and [Applause] two rigs over jeffcoat then brought down by willie broughton as he got to the 49 maybe the 48-yard line this is not the same gerald riggs that the redskins fans or any of the nation has seen in the early games gerald riggs is nursing a sore arch i talked to joe gibbs before the game i said how is he he said he's fine i don't buy it he looked very ginger and very tentative on that run that is not a gerald riggs you know sometimes it takes a little while to get enough steam up in the furnace too but he doesn't look like he's real comfortable yet on that on that foot redskins on third and one as you see dead last in this league it's converting joe gibbs said people have lined up with a lot of defensive lineman to stop that short play they'll make it this time riggs with a little more authority across the dallas 45 to the 44. and this is the one thing the cowboys have not been able to do this year they're giving up nearly 161 yards on the ground every game well you know the other thing too is the redskins that time did not line up in a conventional short yardage situation they've got biner and riggs in but they've got the two wide receivers split in and they let the line go man on man with the cowboys now the cowboys can't put their short yardage people in so they figure if we're not good at it let's go with our regular offense and it worked for him good twist here comes the blitz on williams has time to unload the throws low and behind gary sanders and williams was interesting when you asked him earlier this week about won't it be good to get in that first hit and what was his response he said no to be good to get up and he did you managed to get up here he just uh he wasn't i i talked to him he said he wasn't concerned but uh there he is he really doesn't get hit he falls down that qualifies for a hit though if you're a quarterback it means you've hit the ground and all week in washington they've had pictures of his back they're giving away t-shirts with his back on it the people in washington are glad to have doug williams in a quarterback second and ten conventional rush jeffcoat with some pressure monk what a catch at the 29. art monk with the great soft hands picks up 15. the thing that makes art monk so great is he is not afraid to give his body up to go after the ball we saw in the first catch he bobbled a little bit took a shot in the back made the catch this ball is thrown terribly inside but look at how see how he he knows that he's got to get his hands on the bottom he cradles it to his body has no respect for physical abuse whether it's the ground or a defensive back that's what makes him so exceptional 6 37 on the turning clock in the first quarter redskins driving at the dallas 30. riggs bounced off lockhart picked up a couple lockhart has not bounced off many people this year he has made 115 tackles by far the leading tackler on the team he's on his way for 230 tackles which would be by like 50 percent a team record and considering there aren't a lot of people who play the true middle linebacker position in the national football league mike singletary is the obvious name that comes up so often mike reichenbach uh in in philadelphia eugene lockhart is a truly great inside linebacker playing the pro bowl status on a defense that's had a lot of problems delay to beiner got away from jeff cote got away again and got back to the line of scrimmage that won't show up as anything on the stats but it avoided a five-yard loss one of the redskins is down now i think it's mark may looks like it could be a knee or an ankle now here's a guy who's got a broken wrist and looks like he's grabbing his leg he's in pain well you talk about one tough person the redskins are already missing jim lachey and russ grimm as joe said may is playing with a cast on his wrist and that's really hurting because he is the guy that needs to get his hands involved with pass protection and he can't do it using one and the coaches said last week against howie long it was a mismatch because he couldn't get that push off with his hands now he tries to compensate you'll see number 73 the right part of your screen he's going to get cut on his knee there you see his leg get pushed out right there he goes to grab it it always seems to happen when you have an injury to one part of your body you tend to protect it especially when you're in fighting and it exposes other areas i mean and he's being held to the sideline now made the pro bowl for the first time last year long overdue and russ grimm who is injured will come in with a sprained knee and move to right guard third and eighth [Applause] comes the blitz based from the safety williams picks it up clark the pass is under throw knocked away by ron francis and vince albrecht now that is the only part of being rusty at the quarterback position mike doug williams should have let that ball go sooner he has not seen the defenses enough to get his timing they pick up the blitz there you see all britain go over and cover glare cut now he should have let it go an instant sooner and of course a little bit further but he hasn't had a chance to work with gary clark to get the true speed of game speed it's different from practice chip low miller having a brilliant season he's made his last six he will attempt one from 45 yards and he pulled it left low miller had made 16 out of 18. so the redskins come up empty the snap didn't help and it's nothing nothing first quarter we have had some great college football games this year too and the schedule is just chock full of goodies for the rest of the season we got for that alabama lsu game lsu's had a lot of trouble but it's a good ball club dallas takes over at its own 27th scoreless first quarter walsh with time and completes it to his tight end steve folsom the cowboys need to do something with their offense all last week against the phoenix cardinals their defense played very very well their offense dropped seven passes walsh made a couple of bad decisions aikman of course wasn't available but he's he could play in a tough situation but i would i would think that jimmy johnson just does not want this man on the field tonight but it's up to walsh to make something happen for this offense especially the good job that their defense has just found i think the point you made earlier about this being the miami hurricane offense and walsh being familiar with it is exactly why he's in there palmer what took a shot from greg minuski this guy's got to be this guy's got to be scary going up against the redskins because by losing daryl green see darrell green's a catch-all in the secondary if you got a quick back who breaks through the line of scrimmage he could catch anybody from anywhere the redskins don't have that breakaway speed brian davis is spread out but he doesn't have the speed of a daryl green so paul palmer being in the cowboy lineup daryl green being out of it compliments the redskins defensive problems but complicates it doesn't compliment them palmer picked up from detroit in exchange for a tenth round draft choice [Applause] second and seven walsh hangs in the pocket completes it to martin got away from aj johnson walton came up to make the hit and then gaufea and coleman were also in there kelvin martin is the veteran wide receiver he's been in pro ball for three years that's it he's the only one who was in training camp with his ball well when you look at the numbers of catches that the receivers have he's got 29 bernard ford has one dixon has six and shepard has seven i mean you know you'd think this was the first week not the ninth week exactly of course they lost michael irvin it is a first down they're exceptional wide receiver another university of miami product he was hurt went on injured reserve with a knee injury a couple of weeks ago you know the redskins can't sit back and let the cowboys get momentum you get a young team with a lot of young guys who are fired up they got to get their own fire lit the redskins can have that cannot have dallas score and then all of a sudden decide that they want to play when is the last time you heard rfk this quiet not a long time these people are not happy palmer on the top no chance wilbur marshall took on the fullback daryl johnston and just shoved him back and made the tackle for a loss of eight [Applause] there is a penalty markered now and it could be against it you know who could it be against could be against uh should be against one of two teams mike could could be against the redskins or the cow i think the redskins jumped off sides because it looked like somebody on the left end jumped off defensive left hand five yard penalty first down that's what i thought when you now they're going to try and blitz the outside linebacker 50 call right here on the lower part right of your screen you see him trying to get a rolling start he's across the line now that it's like the redskins they do something great and then they they stick a pin in the balloon that blew up caldwell now the starter at the left linebacker spot mel kaufman and monty coleman played there for a long time first and five dallas [Applause] keep near sideline incomplete aj johnson was running down there with james dixon there's a battle of giants aj johnson's 5-8 james dixon is 5-10 but i think you talk about two guys with some quicks there's some people who can pick him up and lay him down in a hurry johnson the redskins sixth-round draft choice out of college dixon picked up on wavers he's out of houston from the run and shoot so he knows how to go good they don't throw the ball much in houston do they not until they get to 95 points the main run second and five [Music] palmer on the delay big hole caldwell got him but not before he reached the redskins 36 it's another dallas first down well the redskins are not going to change their style of defense they are going to commit people to go after the quarterback because they feel like the cowboys have to throw charles mann now right is right in front of manewski at 71. they do an excellent job coming down and blocking him from the right side do not allow him to get penetration and palmer shoots through man moving around uh ala reggie white he still seems to be so much more effective at the outside in palmer on the delay paul palmer to the redskins 16-yard line and this is the team that is dead last in the nfl in russia they rush for an average of 64 yards a game they may be closing in on 64 already and the redskins are ranked fifth against the rush so i mean we're seeing something different everything is quick what the what the cowboys are doing is there are hoping and betting that the redskins will try and rush the quarterback and just hit the creases palmer has already rushed for 30 yards on four carrick first and ten dallas palmer again minuski got in that time a loss of a couple minuscule is in there with that foo man tube well he looks like a middle linebacker doesn't it if he ever takes his helmet off he's got his hair shaved in something that resembles a mohawk i mean this you know i don't university of m and that m is like mars there's another candidate from the university of mars uh he loves to play i mean he plays the right position he's a middle linebacker and he loves to just run and hit people playing for the injured neil alco it's another guy great against the run for many years second and 11. walls with time overthrows shepherd bowls on the coverage when you watch walsh excuse me no i was going to say when you watch walsh especially when he's changed plays the line of scrimmage i thought that was his strength in college i never saw a college quarterback as good as steve walsh was at audiblizing at the line of scrimmage but you can forget everything from different absolutely different what you think you see in the national football league is probably totally different than what you're going to get but what's impressed me about him is he's not trying to force the ball down here and make a mistake they're within field goal range that he wants to protect for three that's good thinking marcus cook and fred stokes for the website third and 11. walsh overthrows palmer wilbur marshall was with him stride for stride walsh now two out of seven for 22 yards a couple of them been dropped not necessarily his fault really it's the inability of the cowboy receivers to hang on to the ball in the last couple games that has made their offense so ineffective roger rosek comes in to try the field goal he has the worst percentage of any kicker so far in the league only 37.5 [Music] but this will be a 35-yard attempt he missed it rosette three out of nine and the cowboys like the redskins come up empty [Applause] both have missed field goals it could be 3-3 and it's got to hurt more for rusek and the cowboys they have not had that many scoring opportunities to be three out of nine he's putting his uh job in jeopardy well the other thing is too is you got to look where he's missed him from i mean he's one for one from 0 to 19 and if he gets over 40 yards it's like he can't hit the broad side of a barn jamie morris is into the redskins backfield along with finer morris is 22. [Applause] he'll get his carry solomon is in on the stop as he gets out to the 22-yard line and that's the end of the first quarter a rapid first quarter at rfk in washington d.c dallas and washington are scoreless he tried to create some controversy in himself he would get darren talbert to tell roger that you know say thanks to roger that would get him upset and that's what how that came about it took roger a little while to realize that was all show there was bitterness and i didn't like them they didn't like me if i was on their team i would love those guys because they played diary and the rest of them played to win he's right yes he is there's no love lost believe me second and seven for the redskins williams with time to don warren is tight end warren fighting toward that first down stick and appears to have it williams now five out of nine david howard number 99 made the tackle he's one of the minnesota players who is who has come over on the trade and he and dave jesse solomon number 54 will play the second and fourth quarters in the dallas defense at outside linebacker well dave wants to their defensive coordinator said simply that this is the way they're set up they want to they want to get these two guys in they want to get him on the football field i think they give him a lot more experience at the defensive linebacker position and probably would be better against the run if anything third and inches for the redskins morris first down to the 31-yard line the report on mark may sprained right knee he will not come back for the redskins and we mentioned the trade with minnesota what is the deal the cowboys get those five players darren nelson of course would not report and was traded to san diego they also get first and second round draft picks in 90 first and second in 91 in 93 first second and the third that's unless they work out some kind of a deal with the vikings in order to keep those players and return some drafts that would take us all night to figure that one out so that's basically what the meat and potatoes of it is reverse the art monks solomon solomon and jeffcoat do the outstanding job and will not let art monk turn the corner he loses eight yards that's the difference in having a right linebacker who's a veteran who's been around for four years as opposed to a kenny norton who's only seen it twice right side of your screen number 54. you see jesse solomon standing up he does not buy the fake he sees art monk coming around now he's not going to run monk down but what he does is he stretches him out to the sidelines to allow help to help come over and jeffcoat who chases everybody all over winds up bringing down art monk but washington redskins have tried to run the ball 10 times tonight they've gained nine yards in 10 carats this is against the worst rushing defense in the league williams to sanders driven out of bounds by everson walls at the 29-yard line everson walls having to make a very big adjustment for himself here's one of the better cover one-on-one man guys in the league as as is isaac holt who came in the trade for minnesota now they're having to play in a defense that is 65 to 70 percent zone these guys they can't their techniques are not designed to be zones they don't bump the people well in zones they're used particularly everson he likes to lay off and play cat and mouse with the quarterback and the wide receiver so he is in a learning process as well tony tolbert number 92 on the dallas defensive line he replaces two tall jones his nickname is too small he's a linebacker in college third and 13. [Applause] williams throws the viner behind him and right on top of him ron francis the third year man out of baylor there is a flag down it will be holding against the redskins trying to protect williams ed simmons was doing his best not to let the pressure get to his quarterback well ed simmons you know is up against jim 76 offense penalty decline fourth down sorry gordon didn't mean to talk over you uh ed simmons you'll see him here number 76 is up against jim jeffcoat now he's filling in for jim leche and you see him latch on with that left hand he's just not going to let go now he's going to ride him down to the ground but he started his career as a rookie against reggie white so from there everything's downhill mojenko an awful low line drive kick picked up by shepard and shepherd paid the price for it a 37-yard kick about half of it in the air a return of one wayne davis down on special teams made the tackle 12 minutes 18 seconds to go first half still scoreless zone 34-yard line first and ten scoreless game mike patrick and joe feisman with you on espn glad you could join us tonight [Applause] at nothing nothing advantage so far cowboys [Applause] fullback johnston he's got a couple you know mike watching this football game right now from an intensity level you say advantage cowboys even though it's not for nothing intensity level i would say is the cowboys the redskins are sitting there both offensively and defensively waiting for somebody else to make some kind of a play doesn't that go back to the fact that the cowboys are on eight and even if it's the cowboys that's hard to get ready it really it's actually the toughest team in football to get ready for they haven't beaten anybody and the last time you played them you blew them out of the box so yeah mentally but the redskins they can't afford to wait second and seven [Music] here comes the blitz wall still has time to unload nobody home bowls the closest man to it tried to short hop it at the 45. steve walsh just got an idea of what the cowboy rivalry is all about about compliments of dexter manly dexter just comes in from the left side and just unloads on them it has not been the greatest of years for dexter manly five and a half sacks but very little else there you see walsh looking downfield now he gets a redskins sandwich in a hurry walsh two out of eight he's missed his last four passes and faces third and seven [Applause] complete defolsom at midfield aj johnson made the tackle but it's a 13-yard gain and a first down this is the best formation for the dallas cowboys to spread the the redskins out get them across the field let their receivers work this is an excellent catch the throw is high and behind the receiver but folsom now that helps a quarterback out i don't care if you've played one year in the league or 21 years in the league when you've got guys making catches like that for you you just feel like you can throw it anywhere and they're going to make you feel good [Applause] manly appeared to jump off sides and palmer will pick up a couple flags are down [Applause] looks like the big right end got an early start cowboys are using a staggered count they know that the redskins want to put pressure on them so they you know steve gets up to the line of scrimmage and he goes with the old putt-hut the old hard huts i still got it you were pretty good at that too as i recall and you also offside number 72 defense five yards first down five you also threw in a little head bob that people were angry about from time to time yeah the referees were most angry i would say of the hard counts that i tried to go on to draw people offsides i got flagged 50 of the time because of my head moving now bob griese he didn't have to move his head at all uh and he was terrific at it in fact he was the best as far as i'm concerned me you know i have 50 50 kind of guy first than five [Applause] caldwell on the blitz walsh throws it away [Applause] is there any doubt that walsh had no intention of trying to complete that to anybody yeah but he made it look like he did mike that's that's the thing not from up here i mean and not from over there where joe gibbs is looking at it so for crying out loud there's nobody there now he gets flushed by caldwell but it's like he's running to his left and he can't get the ball up in the air to throw it far enough down the field of which there was absolutely not a soul within a mile we saw a game earlier today where that was called when there was a receiver in the neighborhood that used to be the old rule but still not called very often second and five [Applause] screen back to johnston got a great block from nate newton the kitchen unloaded well raven caldwell had to go into the dining room in the living room if he wanted to get around the kitchen let me tell you that there was no hope and once you get into the kitchen you can't get away from them you'll see on this hit watch this the left side of your screen they run paul palmer to the right and then they slide the fullback out to the left johnston now what left part of your screen look at this ravenclaw he's going to try and go around the kitchen but now he's stuck at the sink they can't get away that's a kitchen with an eat-in area that is not one of your kitchens that fits in one of those mobile homes let me tell you first and ten cowboys redskins may have jumped again [Applause] and they'll give it to broderick sergeant number 39 who's in it fullback and he'll get a couple there are no flags down next sunday of course we'll start at 11 30 eastern with game day then prime time at seven o'clock chris tom pete john saunders will be along fred edelstein also on game day a cast of thousands and then we'll be back from sunny san diego the raiders the newly resurgent raiders with bo jackson who had 159 yards rushing today another average day at the office against jim mcmahon and they got a big win this afternoon [Applause] another blitz and waltz can't get out of the way of this one and monty coleman who for years has been one of the best blitzing linebackers in this league especially coming up the middle gets the sack he's healthy now he had a hamstring problem we saw in the graphic earlier on prime time as well as early in this show was the fact that this guy's that pulled muscle he's got more muscles to pull than anybody now he just comes flying in scot-free and again paul palmer he doesn't know who to block that was his responsibility but in this new scene scheme a new system with the cowboys he's only been there three weeks so he's not sure who to block third and 16. the redskins fans trying to get into this one walsh for the screen almost intercepted he overthrew his full back sergeant and wilbur marshall almost picked it off that is the second straight poorly executed screen they tried to set up well you know it is and the thing is is the problem with it is steve walsh in a screen you're supposed to be patient you're supposed to take five steps set up relax or take a step forward and draw the defense to you i personally don't think that steve walsh wants that defense too close to him so he unloaded it a little prematurely saxon to punt to joe howard who waits at his 10 with 8 14 to go in the half howard lets it go and you just made the end zone 44-yard punt no return the redskins will start from the 20 with 803 to go in the half [Applause] moving the ball getting points they're tied nothing nothing with dallas second quarter you're the quarterback what do you do now well first of all we've got nine yards so far running the football and it's because dallas defense is coming up to stop it they're committing on the run to stop it i'd run a play action pass they got to defend 80 yards of the field they've run some some stuff that they have play action off of earlier this is the perfect time you got to get your team excited you got to get the fans excited i come in run a play action pass and put it up top it has been a game of defense and mistakes nothing nothing second quarter 803 to go first half from rsk redskins take over at their own 20 after the punt of the end zone riggs hasn't played in quite a while his injury may be acting up williams with time dumps it to finer and viner will pick up maybe three middle linebacker eugene the hitting machine lockhart was there for the tackle now that was a case where doug williams wanted to go down the field but he knows the offense so well he dumps it off to the other man now look see eugene go back into his coverage he sets about five yards plants that right foot and closes very well that's that's all you can ask of a linebacker and he used to be a real liability as far as pass coverage now he has gotten so much better we used to love him on the field when we were out throwing i mean we just didn't feel like he could do very well they'll give viner progress to the 25 second and five williams to sanders and sanders has the first down at the 31-yard line wrapped up in a hurry randy shannon who is in on pass coverage and lockhart make the tackle this is something that the redskins love to do you'll see as sanders comes in motion warren clears out monk clears out sanders will run just a little delay inside it's just designed to gain five or six yards and hopefully he'll break you see they go underneath the linebackers there's the play and they picked up exactly what they wanted to clock turning six minutes 44 seconds to go in the half we are scoreless jamie moore broke one tackle and got out to the 35-yard line brought down by jesse solomon 54. morris the stats on him he has had one 100-yard game this year even though he only has 128 total here comes jeffcoat he's going to take a hard insight on simmons this time he manages to slow jamie morris up and allow jesse solomon to come in they're getting some great play from the right side jeff coate and solomon longest run of the night five yards four-man rush williams with time finer out of the backfield very close to a first down again gene lockhart made the tackle you know what scares me about these passes that doug's throwing is when you're throwing as hard as he throws i mean and it maybe anybody else could do it and i would feel more comfortable as hard as doug williams throws the football when you're throwing balls like that to your backs in the middle and drags to your wide receivers one of those things gets tipped up you can better a dollar to a donut it is not going to hit the ground it's going to wind up in somebody in blue shirts hands and that's what scares me a little bit about throwing the ball in the middle so much redskins will face third and inches i think they can make this one they've made them all so far i know one guy who's not sure and it's the guy with the headset on the sidelines but that guy right there he's not real certain and you know one thing that i've seen the redskins do more this year than any year is pass on third and short i mean they just haven't been successful hammering it in which has been a trademark but maybe maybe you uh take a shot at see they don't come out in their short yardage formation again they come out in what they call a regular formation one tight end too bad i think that's given them the running room to make and you may see the redskins do this the rest of the year instead of going to that short yardage setup they can they're they're too thin up front lachey is out now may's out grim's on a bad leg jacoby's got a bad thumb i mean bostick's the only guy who's been there and stayed there at center so they don't have the confidence you know the hogs are no longer hogs there may be piglets right now at this stage they're not the full-blown hogs that they used to be and we were right on the speculation about riggs his sore left arch has been aggravated he may return they say try to give him some treatment in a second uh at straight to halftime williams for gary clark defender fell down incomplete had double coverage horton was back there and horton wanted offensive interference robert williams had the primary coverage and then ray horton the player that they picked up as a plan b free agent from cincinnati made the play and he has been a good acquisition ray horton makes a great play on this watch the 22 you're going to see the play action fake monk's going to come across he's going to run this way clark is going to go here the object is to read him he starts to go for monk and then he goes back to the middle to play the center field and stop clark now watch see how he say he sees he sees monk moving then the ball is in the air too long you see everybody thinks you throw deep passes a long distance no you throw him not too far and let the receiver make and go get it and doug williams did not like what he saw from his offense or the dallas defense and takes a timeout with 4 43 to go first half still nothing nothing baseball coming next year we are really thrilled about the prospect and you will see a couple of hundred tons of major leagues if you're a baseball fan don't go anywhere but where you want to be on espn because we got them for i can't wait second and ten redskins at their own 46. [Applause] knocked away by williams intended for art month it has not been a spectacular show by the washington awesome this is bait what they want to do is they want to move doug a little bit they the pressure isn't that bad but they want to try and get the receivers a little deeper this is an out and up move now monk is supposed to push the receiver up the field or the defensive back up the field a little bit the problem is is williams is playing so far off of him you're not going to fool him i mean give a lot of credit to the defensive coaches of the cowboys third and 10 washington [Applause] williams the little double cluck hits monk monk out of bounds ball is down no fumble monk out of bounds at the dallas 32 a gain of 22 yards and he was wide open on that one well that's what happens when you play a zone you give credit you see they're in a zone but by zone we mean that the defensive backs are dropping back they don't have anybody specific in coverage there's a case where vince albrecht he had monk but he thought he had outside help again this is a group of guys that are still trying to learn a defense the cowboys in all truth are still in training camp there's monk out of bounds for 32 that's why there could not be a fumble doug williams starting to warm up a little 10 out of 17 100 yards over the middle for sanders too high all britain was right with him and williams had some pressure that time and doug williams is just not as sharp as he would like to be which is obvious you take ten and a half months old i think he's done great considering ten and a half weeks well he knows months yeah from last year last year the whole thing i mean you take that length of time off here's a guy who really hasn't seen and again practice is one thing you can set in practice nobody's going to hit you because coaches blow whistle out here they only blow whistles after they hit you second and ten both teams have missed field goals here in the first half they're only scoring opportunities four-man rush dallas not going with the blitz pass complete to sanders put a short one down to the 28-yard line ricky sanders comes up with more catches uh all three receivers will sell out and just give up their body but ricky sanders makes unbelievable catches i said the problem that he's running into he's going to throw this thing inside a lot and that ball is going to wind up bouncing around he literally catches that one over the forearm of eugene lockhart third and three the redskins with the ball marked at the dallas 25 3 49 to go first half no score [Applause] here comes the blitz and it's intercepted all britain it was intended for art monk but came a lot closer to all britain and he got it credit ray horton aldrin may have the football but ray horton hits doug williams arm as he lets it go it's a safety blitz and doug hung in there like he always does except he got his arm hit not his fault give a lot of credit to the cowboy defense for making a great play watch this right side you see right heart number 20. he comes right through the gap now bostick does a good job to try and pick him up but right there you see the arm get hit all britain makes the catch dallas takes over just inside his own floor [Applause] palmer on the delay he may have lost five yards wilbur marshall raven caldwell daryl grant the cowboys are kidding himself they're not going to run to football especially now backed up when the team is backed up the redskins figure you don't have receivers fast enough to beat our cornerbacks and our safety i don't care who's on the field you don't have the receivers to do it we're coming after you what the cowboys should do is move steve walsh a little bit design something in this offense to get him out of eight yards back second and 14. 54 in line and they did exactly what you said little half roll complete pass up to the 26 to mark unbelievable isn't it i mean it's the game is not complicated really people make it complicated what happens on this one is by moving the quarterback why it's so good is that means that you only have to block half of the field and you can send everybody that way wilbur marshall in this case does not rush the passer but he goes back into pass coverage good job by kelvin martin cradling the ball as he hits the ground third and four only 2 25 to go in the half flag is down [Applause] [Music] unsportsmanlike conduct number 72 defense after all he continued to ask for crowd noise after the team broke the huddle first down dexter manley was warned not to keep waving his arms so the crowd would get louder and he did it anyway so they call unsportsmanlike conduct you know sometimes you wonder this is a team game but one guy can hurt the entire team he is hurting his football team by just totally ignoring what the officials are telling dexter should play football with his hands on cowboys not in the air trying to incite the fans i don't know how walsh could have heard little screen tight end not there by himself had one blocker folsom makes the tackle and that penalty gave dallas a big first down to keep the drive alive we have reached a minute 58 to go first half dallas football in a scoreless game whose penalty for inciting the crowd if you wish has given the dallas cowboys a big first down you can see he's trying to go over to gordon mccarter and say look i really wasn't in sight i was clapping high you know like getting my hands up in the air to clap and get my teammates going see look see he's still he's still trying to sneak it in look at dex decks don't you understand they'll hit him with another 15. now he's making believing that he's flexing his shoulders second and two dallas had its own 49. palmer nice hole into territory down at the 46. this is another lesson for steve walsh how do you run a two-minute drill when the game is still close he's been in games when they've been blown away don't mean much this is a this is a great education for him it's a great example for the young members of the cowboy offense you don't think paul palmer is enjoying this he grew up in suburban maryland that went to churchill high school walsh over the middle incomplete [Applause] minuski may have gotten a hand on it as they threw for steve folsom hope you'll stay with us at halftime because we have chris berman coming along with halftime highlights and we're there's some great games today and a conversation with nfl commissioner paul tagliabue who is here with us tonight and joe theismann will explain the passing tree which is gonna be like a christmas tree i mean that's coming very similar is it a little thin but very similar second and ten dallas at the skin 46 a minute 30 to go [Applause] on the blitz walsh got away grows incomplete could have been caught by junior todd latosia went right through his hands give steve walsh a lot of credit he's got to get plays from from his receivers running backs and receivers he avoids the rush from the left side you'll see govea good move they blitz they don't get out to block him this is not in the grass because he never had a hold of him the ball was a little bit high yes but junior's got to make those plays you got to help the young quarterback out as much as you can and walsh in the last three weeks has had a lot of drop pass third and 10 for dallas from the washington 46. [Applause] walls with time tripped up almost intercepted by walton aj johnson number 47 was the player got a hand on it he's filling in for barry wilburn who was filling in for the injured daryl green when you look at this you're going to wonder who's supposed to run the pass route aj johnson playing real tough on the inside on james dixon now you see dixon grab aj to stop him from getting inside it's great coverage there's another case where each team's not making the plays that's what's hurting fourth and ten a minute twenty to go in the half and saxon will punt joe howard waits at this again booming kick by saxon this will easily reach the end zone 46-yard punt but the redskins will get 20 of that back and with 111 to go in the half the redskins will have one last shot at putting something on the board mike i don't understand i mean saxon he's kicking from about his his own 40 45 yard line the guy i'll guarantee there isn't a punter national football league that can't kick a ball 50 or 60 yards why do you aim it down the middle of the field even if you kick it out of bounds on the 15 it helps your football team why do you and if not kick the sucker so high that your guys can run under it i mean it seems like you know mike you know i know it's 103 punts inside the 20 over the last four years but didn't you do your darn bit of good tonight skins take over at the 20 11 to go in a scoreless first half [Applause] screen to find it got a good block from grimm out to the 31-yard line [Applause] the redskins used their second timeout now remember doug williams called one before and that's the second one so the redskins only have one timeout with 69 yards to go so they're going to have to try and work the sidelines get the ball to the backs tell them to get out of bounds and as they get up near the 50 what they'll do is they'll try and hit somebody over the middle and get in field goal range of course dallas 0 and 8 these are the worst starts of the 80s the saints at 0 and 14 the colts oh and 13 all the way down to the buccaneers in 83 and 85 they were 0 and 9. but none of these teams finished winless except the buccaneers in in the 70s but nobody has ever been owen 16. and i don't think they will be i just don't believe it and you know i'm sure the redskins fans and are hoping that it's not going to be tonight but jimmy johnson his defense is playing too well normally the defense is the toughest thing to build when you're an expansion team or a team that's struggling his is playing too well as has been indicated tonight first and ten redskins 57 seconds to go in the half from their own 31. [Applause] williams dumps it to finals bill bates drags him down wouldn't let him get out of bounds at the 38 clock run williams signalling for another no no that's the red ball signal that is what's known the redskins hurry up offense is called red ball and that's when he puts his hands together to make sort of a round circle above his head redskins have some trouble getting into that formation williams steps up intercepted by bates bill fates down to the 34-yard line the second interception for doug williams and on that one he hit baits right between the four and the zero he steps right up and just fires this ball to somebody who's probably supposed to be on a crossing pattern got joe gibbs excited you see bates in the middle he just reads doug williams eyes that's all he's doing he's reading his he's trying to go to gary clark on the in pattern bates is a short center fielder he's been around a long time he just looked at williams's eyes and when doug committed to go one way bates win it here you see now it looks like it's open and he fires it to clark but bates who was out of his vision to the left slid right over he never saw bill bates you know that 140 games this year there's only been two that have been 0-0 at halftime well the cowboys have a chance to break that there's 24 seconds left they have all three of their timeouts [Applause] blimps and walsh throws low and incomplete intended for shepherd at the 27-yard line that's talking to bill bates there's bill bates bill bates has got to be excited i'm sure his wife and the triplets at home are excited he says the only time i really get to sleep now joe is when we make road trips he's got five month old triplets so obviously when he gets home he's a little busy so uh i'm sure the kids don't know but someday they're gonna know that dad's gonna enjoy this one doug williams on two days of practice ten weeks after baxter joe gibbs would not hesitate to make a switch i mean 21 seconds to go second and ten [Applause] cowboys not in field goal range yet now they may be palmer to the 27-yard line dallas will spend a timeout with 14 seconds left martin mayhew made the tackle keep in mind that roger rosek the field goal kicker has made three of nine this year that's right three of nine and missed one earlier tonight now he's over now here's steve walsh here's a guy who really understands what's going on in the football field he knows that he has the time out now watch what happens after he makes the completion you have to know where the referee is he finds gordon mccarter he knows he's behind him now look he sees the completion he sees he's down he turns right around does not waste one second very smart very heady good move that's jerry rome right there talking to him jerry rome is the quarterback coach now a couple of weeks ago the cowboys made a switch david schull is the offensive coordinator he went upstairs to the booth because he felt he could see things better jerry rome who i've coached or was here with the redskins of course he was a heisman trophy runner up in 1964 too is the quarterback coach he has gone down to the field 14 seconds to go in the half walls deep over the middle there's the flag down martin has it at the two we will check the penalty the flag zone at the 20. dallas number two dallas takes a time out to stop the clock they'll get it back if this uh penalty is against the redskins well they will they will if unless they take the play exactly if they take the play then the timeout will go against them if it's against the redskins and they do not accept the pity on the penalty the clock would stop they decline the penalty then they take the charge timeout waiting on gordon mccarter to sort it all out they are leaving the ball marked inside the five illegal hand called a number 34 defense that penalty is declined to this first down goal to go further dallas wanted the timeout even though the flag had been thrown two time timeouts one to go exactly what you said yep they got all the well see the other thing is too even if there was even if the penalty was there jimmy johnson wanted to talk it over they've got a tough decision to make they do what well it is tough the thing is is time is of the essence here what he has told steve walsh on the sidelines both jimmy johnson and jerry rome is look seven seconds if the guy's not open right away put it up into the cheap seats and let's put rusev going to see if he can make the fourth one of the year seven seconds to go dallas at the two and a half yard line and the last thing he said to him is don't make a mistake wall stroke incomplete intended for martin brian davis was there clock stops with five seconds to go do you try another plug i'll tell you i don't think so i really don't believe so and jimmy johnson is not he's got what he wants the redskins are trying to blitz him that ball just looks like it gets tipped in the air and winds up being behind kmart as they call him kelvin martin it's tough throwing you know you got these guys six six six seven with their hands up and you're only throwing five yards down field rouzek with what is virtually an extra point wasn't going to miss that one [Music] and the dallas cowboys after a defensive struggle the entire first half have taken a surprise three-nothing lead on the you got to ask yourself mike are the dallas cowboys just now starting to gel as a football team or are the washington redskins deteriorating to a point where they're struggling against a team that hasn't won anything all year if this lead holds up for the next two seconds and you would expect some kind of a squib kick it would be only the second time the cowboys have led at the half this year the other was against the atlanta falcons they went on to lose that one be with us at halftime the fastest three minutes in television chris berman around the entire nfl we'll talk with the new commissioner paul tagliabue the washington lawyer and joe theismann will be back to talk about the passing tree and the passing tree is the basic form of communication in the national football league it's the numbers that designate designate pass routes but but i'm only going to tell you that much because you're going to have to watch halftime for the rest of it dallas defensive coaches must be thrilled they have two interceptions tonight coming into this game they have had four all year yeah they're fifth they're they're 50 of an entire production right now what's scary is like i said you got a young team that's looking for anything to build on if the redskins continue to feed the cowboys this momentum they're going to dig themselves a hole where three points becomes insurmountable more or less 10 or 17 or whatever howard and sanders are deep with two seconds left let's see if bruzek will kick it away low line drive but that will get back to where sanders can return it and sanders nearly broke it across the 35 to the 36 yard line that's the end of the first half and the heavily underdog dallas cowboys lead the redskins three to nothing let's go back [Music] we're ready to start the third quarter at rfk the cowboys lead the redskins 3 nothing washington will kick off to start the second half james dixon and derek shepherd deep to receive dixon waits at the three took a big hit as he crossed the 20 got it back to about the 22-yard line kurt gevell down to make the tackle here are the stats and they're ugly boy this is an ugly stat report let me tell you eight of 21 completions 13 of 23 81 yards for the cowboys which is what you expect when you play a good defensive team 126 for the redskins rushing yards the cowboys are doing much better than i think they expected the redskins again are haunted by that last number on the right the turnovers they've absolutely killed them and they can't run the football this will be an interesting quarter for the for the dallas offense they have scored seven points all year in the third quarter just seven [Applause] walsh with all day to throw to martin complete at the 35 yard line bowles makes the tackle fred stokes starts on the defensive line in the second half in place of dexter manly well this is something the redskins hang their hat on trying to put pressure on the quarterback now here's kmart as he's called going up against brian now this is against the zone remember anybody that's followed the redskins over the last the 80s the redskins do not play a lot of zone defense they're much better man-to-man cover people but with their third string corner in there aj johnson they may be forced to a lot more now richie pettibone will not change his style to play palmer on the toss wilbur marshall waiting got a hand on him and then gets a lot of help you know why i say that mike why i say richie will not change his philosophy that's richie pettibone the defensive coordinator of the redskins because in a man-to-man coverage you can commit your linebackers and your safeties to run support that's really it's not designed because you want to cover wide receivers with cornerbacks the man-to-man coverage is designed to try and shut down the run that means you get a linebacker if a halfback has the ball he goes and gets him there's richie pettibone really been one of the guys that's been overlooked i think for a head coaching job national football yeah he's done a great job through the 80s second and nine dallas johnston curt gavaila was right there hit him at the line of scrimmage third year player out of brigham young eighth-round pick eighth-round pick now there's cover right in the middle number 54. he comes off they try and double team daryl grant what happened is mark two in a number 71 of the cowboys was supposed to block him but when he got where govea was he was gone already now third and nine and that's what the cowboy fullbacks have done this year virtually nothing of course they don't get that many carry dexter manly back in the lineup charles mann jumped let's see if he was drawn off mike this is going to be an interesting call see who they call it against encroachment 71 defense five yards still third down i think if he'd just jumped a little bit they might have been able to get walsh with the head bob but being that he's four miles in the backfield it doesn't matter watch this now to me there's no excuse because he's right over the football he can see if that thing moves or not now see wall see his head go up and down the right part of your screen there it is not only his head his shoulders and everything else moves now to me that is drawing the defense offside fifth penalty against the redskins for 35 yards dallas has not been penalized in this game walt ford dropped the ball [Applause] bernard ford out of central florida had it right in his hands would have been easily a first down and couldn't hold it you wouldn't think a guy who's only had one receptions would let this stuff get away from him that easy this has plagued walsh all last week as well he is gaining more and more confidence now bernard ford in my opinion makes the cardinal mistake for a receiver he lets the ball get to his body saxon to kick to joe howard [Applause] andover end howard signals fair catch nobody within 10 yards of him and makes it at the 24 yard line a punt of 35 yards no return 12 48 to go third quarter still cowboys by three four yard line gerald riggs still not back in the lineup he was nursing a sore arch on his left foot started the game but didn't play much and jamie morris is in the tailback doug williams remains the quarterback morris [Applause] gene lockhart made the tackle mark may another one of the redskins all-pro offensive lineman out with the sprained knee was already playing with a broken wrist jim lachey norris grimm started tonight along that line getting a little thin yeah they really are they're running out of people up front they activated ray brown but he hasn't practiced all all season with him but he was a body that they brought in they're hoping they don't have to use them second and six for washington morris again cut it back got to the 29-yard line i'll tell you what joe gibbs did at halftime to his football team he he simply stated to them we could they could probably throw the football but he's looking for somebody in this football team to come forward with character he told them i'm not going to take the chief way out we're not just going to put the ball in the air we're gonna come out and pound the ball against this football team and it's up to you guys to make it happen i'm sure he said that in some type of a way and this is what jimmy johnson expected him to do from the beginning of the game try to shove it right down their throat right now is now his defensive guys have risen to the occasion third and five four-man rush no pressure complete finer out of the backfield first down and more to the 45-yard line bill bates and ray horton had to make the stop [Applause] that's a quarterback stream third down and five that's when the defense has to play defense right part of your screen ernest byner he comes out and he's working one-on-one on bill bates and they lose him everson walls again remember i said he doesn't play the zone very well that was his own defense and everson's just lost in the zone byner came over and another one of those great bobby beathard deals from cleveland had a reputation as having great hands he's dropped some balls here he told us it's because he's trying to make big plays every time morris pretty good hole that time picked up about four jeff cote on the stop for the cowboys joe gibbs always used to tell his football teams the first five minutes of the second half and the first five minutes of a football game is when you dictate momentum we saw it in the first half the cowboys dictated momentum by making some very good defensive plays now the redskins are trying to do it offensively they have to complete this drive without making a mistake that's the most important thing even if they come away with just a field goal [Music] second and six [Applause] finer on the delay [Applause] got about two more dean hamill the former number 60 in on the tackle hamill has looked forward to these two red skin games very very much he did not leave here under the best of circumstances difference of opinion with joe gibbs tasmanian devil call them pads you remember watching tasmanian devil on tv sure this guy plays the same way all over the place wired for sound third and five to join this late dallas leads three-nothing we're in the third quarter [Applause] williams with plenty of time to sanders first down at the cowboy 39. they're doing a great job in pass protection williams is not being touched good job up front giving doug williams a time great happy feat by ricky sanders gets williams turned around williams is a man-to-man coverage can't find him ricky sanders cradles the ball redskins are all body catchers they all like the ball to get to their body first and then they can close on it we saw bernard ford drop one before of course when he's only had one reception he's not sure quite what he is yet williams bombs away for sanders overthrown covered very well by ray horton and williams now 15 out of 26 152 yards but he has those two interceptions cowboys willing to come with the gamble that time they brought their linebackers and put a lot of pressure on their secondary people to cover those redskins receivers one on one he did a good job ray horton playing real well i mean he seems to be getting very comfortable at that pre-safety position he's got good speed for a safety he was a corner with cincinnati [Applause] second and ten [Applause] cowboys just will not blitz they're coming with four and that's it art monk lost the ball cowboys recover ron francis out of baylor made the recovery he's number 38. [Applause] monk's going to make the catch across the middle and as he makes the reception he's going to get hit not by one you'll see him come in the left side of your screen he makes the catch now he gets hit by francis who strips it away linebacker's right there to put a shoulder on him randy shannon and the ball comes rolling out here's another look at it francis pulls the ball now the question is is he down when that ball comes out oh he's down knee was down if i'm the cowboys i'm going to run to play real quick so they don't go to review and now they caught him you lose they will review it when the knee is down wit and jimmy johnson very frustrated because he knew it too well you know what you got to do is just tell your quarterback get up there and run a quick count play what's going to happen is this is going to be reviewed and it's going to be if if if it's what our eyes tell us this should be turned around this is not a fumble watch his left knee watch his left knee see he still has possession see his left knee he still has possession of the football that is a completion chuck heberling is the replay official [Applause] and by the way they don't listen to us let's qualify that their officials in there are in their own little world they don't know what's going on out here in our world and it's just a decision they have to make remember it has to be conclusive to be overturned but that's about as conclusive as it gets but you could see when the redskins were leaving the field after they thought they had lost the ball the frustration on the washington sideline is growing by the minute that's right and like i said they've got to complete that drive instant replay has played a very big part in some of those great football games today chicago green bay we saw the last last play of the game very critical call was makowski over the line looks like they're heading for the telephones when you got two officials heading for the telephones that's when you make a decision you know it's a major call i'll tell you what it's a major call when you've got two officials not one for communications purpose it's necessary to use the field phone to contact the replay booth apparently they're having trouble with the communication so they want to get it right and get on the phone well they don't want to make a mistake but here your eyes will tell you there's his left knee and he still has possession of the football he's not bobbling it it's not out into the air certainly from the angles we've seen it's obvious that monk's knee did hit the ground before he lost the question is is what angles are available to the replay booth they're seeing at least those and now we'll get the decision and this is a huge decision especially for the washington redskins they've been totally frustrated on offense big big defensive plays by the cowboy defense they've risen to the occasion time and time again don't know whether this one's going to go with them or against it there it is wilbur marshall heard the conversation after review it is ruled that the letter was down by contact first on washington jimmy johnson must be thinking what else can you do to me this year he doesn't that's exactly i think he's almost become shell shock i mean let's like you're right what else can it look that is that's disbelief and dismay see what happens is that his offense stood over the ball and waited and waited and waited but of course they are not privy to the pictures that we are right i mean everybody thinks the ball rolled out so he's going to run his normal offense but the rule is if the ball is snapped they cannot go back and absolutely not they cannot the ball is put in play the play stands as is and instead of the redskins third dawn washington's football so now we'll reset it at third down and about four and with 8 19 to go in the third quarter the redskins driving trying to tie it up the cowboys with a 10-yard field goal have the lead three-nothing there's dexter manly on the left charles man what they're doing is what they're trying to say is look i don't know what he's smiling about i got to be honest with you if you know things were this way i wouldn't necessarily smile i think he's probably explaining to dexter don't incite the crowd okay let's not try and get any more penalties to hurt us they had to go for the field goal from here it would be about 50 yards and it looks like confusion on both sides and now they'll throw a flag everybody was pointing at gary clark and now doug williams wants to get his two cents worth in encroachment contact before the snap number 84 offense five yard penalty still third down who's gary clark gonna hit i mean he weighs he weighs 175 pounds watch see the left side see all the movement here now watch right there you're going to see him as the shift start you'll see him just move forward watch see when when the cowboys went to make their adjustments clark moved thinking it was a cadence third and nine and the redskins are out of field goal range and here comes another stopping holy cow this does not look like a team that's marching this way i'll tell you what happened gordon mccarters said encroachment by the offense that's not encroachment what the official from the outside came in and said you said encroachment he thought that was a defensive penalty he wanted to make sure it was an offensive penalty that's what that conversation was about third and nine [Applause] williams over the middle completes the sanders he's got the first down a gain of 11. and the k how long can the cowboys joe allow doug williams to sit in the pocket and wait as long as he wants well as long as they play the zone that we're talking about here you see everybody drop back into coverage this is a gimme for ricky sanders i mean this is not hard football the dallas cowboys are going to have to change once they get people in camp and they get more comfortable with their personnel they're going to have to learn to play more man-to-man you cannot play good defense in this league with the personnel that they have and play zone robert williams was never closer than 10 yards till the ball was thrown and there's the redskins first down efficiency stats compared to the rest of the league morris big hole lockhart made the tackle but he made it eight yards downfield [Applause] this is the counter the counter trap counter gap counter tray you call what you want it's a counter move but lockhart's not fooled he's seen it a lot mike tyse gets into his face then ed simmons gets into his face he plays off both blockers and makes the play redskins deepest penetration of the game with six minutes to go third quarter morris not this time ken norton right there may have lost the yard well you got to remember that this is ken norton's quarter we talked about jesse solomon and david howard are coming in for he and randy shannon so he's got to make hay in the third quarter else he's going to be out watch his head on collision right here dean hamill does a good job of fighting off and then norton comes in and just bulldogs morris down this brings up a third and three from the 18-yard line do you know mike i remember when guys used to make tackles and just go back to the huddle that's a long time ago shooting the guy redskins have not done a good job once they've gotten in this territory williams on a little half roll throws low and incomplete to sanders had him open and didn't hit him [Applause] and the redskins will have to go for the field goal see i don't understand doug williams with his back in particular here's the reverse angle he's sprinting to the left that's the toughest throw in football for a quarterback running to opposite the direction of your arm by that i mean if you're a right-handed quarterback if you run left you've got to turn your hips which really puts a strain on your back to make the throw if anything you should have sprinted to the right to try it low miller will try from 36. he is 16 of 19 this year didn't get all of it but it was enough the redskins was 4 58 to go in the third quarter finally get on the board against the dallas cowboys and we're tied at three in the third quarter we have had four field goal attempts two of them have been good and we're tied at three get a chance to see something you haven't seen very much tonight a scoring drive 13 plays 58 yards helped by that reversal of the instant replay chip miller chip low miller knocks the field goal through he's 17 of 20 now here's a guy who's been kicking very well dixon and shepard dixon got some room dixon to the 40-yard line brought down by clarence vaughn a return of 38. watch the left side you see the wedge they're the guys around the 20 yard line they pick off the redskins and he's got craters to run what a great block he's got a crater to run through if he had a little more patience and set up his blockers a little bit more he probably would have been able to squeeze another 10 yards out of it but that that's some great blocking up front by that kick return team so the cowboys take over at their 40. walsh has paul palmer behind it [Applause] drilled it and bounced it right off of tight end steve folsom remember the sold out crowd here in washington tonight the new commissioner of the national football league paul tagliabue he's been a season ticket holder for about 20 years but he moved out of the stands though apparently so many photographers down around him he couldn't see the game so he's upstairs well you know the other second half the other thing is is people think that now that he's commissioner he gets to sit in a box at the 50-yard line he's got seats in the end zone that's what he all he did was want to take his his daughter to the game and watch it with the end zone poor guy can't i hope he likes defense reverse shepherd brian davis cut his legs out from under him at the 47-yard line dexter manley was not fooled either he was right there to force the plague these are usually the kind of plays you run if you get the defense flowing chasing your running game watch the right side of the defense dexter he sees it coming plants his foot manages to get outside dexter manly is very quick although he didn't make the tackle he makes a very good play there by forcing shepard back inside to the pursuit if those get outside they can go all the way third and three for dallas delay to palmer first down look at this palmer with a huge hole up the middle all the way to the seven yard line aj johnson davis and vaughn and mayhew had to track him down but a gain of 47 yards [Applause] watch what's going to happen here the tackles are going to come outside here's the man responsible for him he's going to get blocked in the wash as palmer goes up there's nobody home he's just going to take right off up the field redskins assuming that he's going to be running now there comes the trap on wilbur marshall and from there it's you know this straight line right up to the goal line that's a great call palmer again excuse me tomorrow coffee is in for palmer a total of posse drags people down to the two they picked him up from philadelphia watch wilbur marshall coming in from the right side of your screen this was the previous play you see mark two and a he creates the screen you don't have to hit somebody hard all you have to do is get in their way and then paul palmer is doing exactly what the cowboys expected him to do like jimmy johnson said he's been here you know he's 180 pounds he's been here two and a half weeks the plays are very simple they're just being executed very well second and goal from the two palmer is back in there as the eye back and now walsh doesn't like what he sees and stops the clock timeout with 2 21 to go third quarter dallas three washington three excited about a major league baseball 1990. got to change the name on that one there it is official nfl wilson football with not pete rozelle i want to take a second too and just pete has done a great job as commissioner here and i don't think people give him enough credit unbelievable terrific guy terrific and two palmer touchdown the second touchdown all year dallas is scored in the third quarter always the key in short yardage is is that the offensive line can get under the defensive line and drive them back there you go you see how high the redskins are they cannot get any penetration and palmer just slides through a crack he doesn't really hurt anybody he goes in between the linemen and winds up in the end zone cowboys having a problem getting their extra point team on the field they're not that used to doing it especially in the third quarter there's only once all year they've had a chance to do this rouzek for the point after bruzek puts it through and the dallas cowboys have stunned a sellout crowd again and have taken a 10-3 lead this is johnson on the touchdown play he hasn't seen many but he knows how to celebrate second touchdown in the third quarter all year long and the redskins looking disarray to be quite honest about it what has happened is the cowboys seem to be gaining momentum the redskins seem to be going the other way right now the redskins got to make something happen or else this game is not only getting away from them score wise but emotionally there's the new commissioner paul tagliabue came upstairs for the second half he has declared his legions to the redskins of course he's lived here 20 years been a season ticket holder can't be a very happy guy right now no it's not a great first day on the job [Music] [Applause] sanders at the 11. the redskins special teams have not done a particularly good job getting the ball out of there there is a flag down the redskins have not started outside their own 30 tonight of course dallas the one unit they have that is pretty good is their kickoff coverage team statistically speaking yep there you see the holding penalty which is going to start the redskins further away holding number 31 receiving team during the return 10-yard penalty first and seven clarence vaughan bill bates always been a a big performer on the special teams there's clarence vaughn he not only holds him he did just a takedown he gets two points nice drive by the cowboys palmer ate up most of that 60 yards with a one run but it puts them on the board 10-3 and the skins have to start from their own 12. thank to morris williams over the middle of don juan johnny warren out to the 37-yard line horton brings him down doug williams got some contact on that one after the pass a 25-yard gain as tony tolbert hit it well this is set up by the play action the redskins coming out thinking they might run out of the end you'll see a play-action fake here to jamie morris dean hamill makes the tackle on him doug williams out all by himself talbot hits him but not until he delivers the ball to donny warren who got behind the linebackers doug williams is very healthy [Applause] 18 out of 30 195 yards two interceptions for williams tonight morris on that little counter play that's been so successful over the years and he's up near the 45 yard line everson walls was in there along with norton on the tackle tolbert playing for ed jones corset jones starts the game you'll see him coming right at you he's only 245 pounds not a big guy rookie out of texas el paso and he's 6-6 which means he's like ed jones he played linebacker in college he gets up on the tight ends but they get under him and can drive him back [Applause] second and three knocked away intended for sanders and excellent defense that time robert williams who has played off his man so much tonight was right there well robert williams he was hurt early in the first game and missed the three after that but here's a little out and up move by ricky sanders robert williams refuses to take the bite see you gotta understand one thing about the redskins is their receivers average like sanders 14-6 clark 16-5 monk 14-7 you don't get those kind of numbers against zone teams they're not good receivers against zones third and three time running out third quarter [Applause] williams throws complete to sanders first down at the 49-yard line doug williams looking for the play being sent in from the bench hope you'll be with us next sunday we'll start it off at 11 30 eastern with nfl game day we'll update you on everything going around the lake previews of all the games and then back with you with nfl prime time at seven then at eight o'clock eastern joe heisman and i will be in san diego for the raiders and the chargers that's the end of the third quarter the dallas cowboys continue to shot the washington redskins it's 10-3 dallas we'll be back with a fourth quarter from washington in a moment she said they want you to light the nation's christmas tree i said well let me tell you something if i go down to light that tree i have to leave the team and we're playing dallas this week suppose i go down there and light that tree and we lose the game i'll never forgive myself tell them i'm honored thanks but no thanks and he's not kidding either he's not i played 1974 george allen brought me to washington and then when he left in 1977 this rivalry is his if anybody wants to call something somebody you call the cowboy rivalry the creation and brainchild of george allen redskins with 15 minutes to catch dallas williams for sanders and he was knocked down by horton now no flag now horton just reached out with his left arm and knocked him down there wasn't even anything sneaky about it they're gonna call that one uncatchable because the back judge knew there was no way that ricky sanders could get to it now why was it called against the redskins before because on defensive holding you cannot have an uncatchable ball on pass interference you can look at it and say yes it's an uncatchable ball not a very very light call in this stadium but i believe it's a good one dallas has still not been penalized tonight second and ten [Music] jeff coate with a big rush complete to beiner and randy shannon made the big play there's a flag down pointing at shannon look like a face mask well that was a big play by shannon the linebacker out of miami who came over smelled the screen made the stop [Music] we have 14 48 to go in the game it is 10-3 dallas there is no foul it was not a face mask call he had him by the shoulder pad no foul well they still haven't been penalized i want to tell you something this officiating crew is doing one heck of a job tonight watch this see the right see his hand now he does not have the face mask he still doesn't have it he has his underneath his neck see he never crams his face now here's another look at it a little closer watch across the chest his forearm touches it he never grabs it see he never really grabs the face and that's the cooperation of the officials third and ten [Music] [Applause] sanders can't hold it at the 35 just off target and the skins will have to give it up ricky sanders working up field does a good job turnaround pattern now that's that's just that's a bad throw by doug williams ricky is coming back to the quarterback like he should and the ball is thrown a little too far outside still rusty that's the best way you can describe doug williams low snap mojenko gets off the low kick shepard lets it go and it rolls into the end zone [Music] 49 yard punt no return 14 34 to go in the game not at rfk but it has not been a happy night for fans they trail the dallas cowboys 10-3 the key so far tonight dallas no penalties no turnover [Applause] incomplete off the hand of steve folsom alvin walton on the coverage this game is so critical for the redskins the standings in the nfc east the redskins lose tonight they would be four and five and in an awful lot of trouble it looks like the giants are coasting in the nfc east the central turning into a real battle with green bay's big win today if the redskins win they would be five and four fighting chicago green bay the rams for that wild card spot new orleans plays tomorrow night they could be five and four martin wide open kelvin martin beat double coverage to the 43-yard line bowles and davis were there but couldn't stop it that was man-to-man coverage todd bowles was a center fielder he couldn't get over brian davis just locks up with kelvin martin and poor brian davis is toe to toe he doesn't really get a handle that's where he got beat he doesn't get beat down field he got beat at the line of scrimmage and there's there's a guy who takes a swing at a ball now brian davis has been snake fit he's had his hands on the ball and everything else and not been able to come up with a play calvin martin's a little bit excited the cowboys at the 42. here comes the reverse dixon still on his feet took a wicked shot as he got to the 37th and steve walsh decides to take on dexter manor and one well sort of like you at least watch this here it goes pitch out to the right side of your screen now dixon will come and walsh is leading this look it left part of the screen he's got dexter manly tied up dixon hurdles alvin walton bounces off of raven caldwell here's the block look at that gets that shoulder in there [Applause] pointed raven caldwell unload gain of six second and four palmer charles mann and tracy rocker right there well it's the first time we've called charles mann's name since early in the first quarter has got to be the guy that's got to play he's going to have to start making things happen out there against dave waddell now ladell goes the other way nate newton who was supposed to block him never does and charles mann delivers a right forearm on paul palmer doug doug williams hoping for a chance his team down 10-3 they can't afford to let dallas get further up not the way they played right you know you just say a penny for your thoughts all he's thinking about is stopping the defense walster throws it up shepard almost made the grab and alvin walton came over and knocked it down there is a flag down back at the 48 yard line if i was the redskins i would decline this i would not take the penalty i don't want to give them another chance to get a first down they're not in field goal range so let them punt it holding 85 offense finally declined fourth down that's the tight end steve folsom and they'll have to punt i think that's the only thing you can do saxon has had a good night it's been a good year really howard waits at the 10-yard line clock running where the flight block is running there's 1203 on the game clock looks like the cowboys want to take the penalty and back it up five yards [Applause] and they finally snap it saxon kicks it as high as he can howard fair catch at the 13. 11 56 to go in the game after a 26-yard punt the cowboys still lead by a touchdown low scoring battle fourth quarter in washington 11 56 to go and jimmy johnson looks up at the clock all the time 11 56 is all he needs to tick off that clock to get his first win in the national football league i asked him if he had a place in his office for that victory for that game ball and he said no i don't he'll make one might make one if he has to yeah the only win dallas has had in its last 20 games came right here last year [Applause] williams throws low but muck makes the catch at the 29-yard line first down washington gain of 15. the redskins have lived with adversity so often and so many times in the last couple years this is suited for them they love to come back they love to have doug throwing the football again a simple turn in route not see how monk goes down and cradles the ball i mean he doesn't take a chance on reaching down he just wants to make the completion for doug considering the lack of activity and only two days practice after back surgery doug williams is playing very well here comes the blitz he rolled out of a throw for sanders got a finger tip on it and that's all ray horton on the covers but he was beaten redskins had the play they wanted they anticipated the cowboys coming they've been blitzing more on second down and long to try and stop the run and they couldn't complete the pass there's that tight spiral all those guys with big hands can throw them that way and just a little bit to the inside of ricky sanders couldn't quite catch up to it second and 10 from the 28th the redskins offense is running out of opportunities 11 14 to go in the game [Applause] almost picked off almost caught almost picked off again ron francis and sanders going back and forth [Applause] see ricky sanders comes inside again they're playing the zone now vince albritton does it francis just reads his eyes sanders almost makes the play francis almost makes the play but what you don't see with all those cowboys around the ball ernest byner standing on the sidelines without a cowboy around him for 15 yards i think doug's trying to force the ball to ricky it's like where is he let me see if i can find him he can't do that third and ten [Applause] [Music] to month short diving trying to get extra yardage but way short of the first down why do you throw a pass that short on third and ten because if you throw the ball in front and art monk runs with it he's gonna get the first down what happens is the ball is thrown behind him he has to turn around and make the play that time they ran clark down the field warren down the field and sanders down the field and dragged monk underneath that's a 20-yard catch if he puts it out in front of him mojenko dupont on fourth and three with 10 47 to go in the game that's derek shepherd waiting in his own 22. the cowboys defense again does the job and this is the defense 26th in the league giving up yardage they are last in the league and allowing points but they've done it tonight low line drive shepard with a chance to return it [Applause] 40-yard punt a return of eight and a wicked hit at the 35 more than 55 000 people are sitting here saying what is going on they're sitting on their hands not to keep them warm because there's nothing to clap about smattering of cowboy fans in here having a great time i mean you look at the redskins on the bench and there everybody's sort of waiting for something to happen cowboys start from their own 35. palmer got four up to the 39. greg minuski the middle linebacker made the tackle palmer's gained 83 yards on 12 runs the offensive set that the cowboys are running got one receiver here one receiver moving back and forth and one receiver here it causes the redskins you see in this zone to think pass it spreads them out then palmer just picks his way up inside and picks up five six seven yards keeps the clock running believe me this is where a quarterback gets in the huddle and is very appreciative of a 45 second clock not the 25 seconds that they used to have cowboys would love to control us for a while and get at least the field goal comes the blitz walls and loads and the receivers were crossing dixon and martin right in front of each other you know interesting about that that was a blitz break off but what happens with young receivers is if the two of them are outside wide they're supposed to go up field about four or five yards well if you're young and you're excited and you're in the league as a youngster you go two yards and if the other guy's young and excited and a youngster he goes two yards and you almost run into one another like they did third and six for the rookie steve walsh out of miami trying to be part of his first nfl great time for another long count you know the redskins are going to come after you why not try another long count but there it was they came with everybody and walt somehow got it in there the ball came loose late and now rolled in complete it looked like a catch momentarily but martin couldn't hold it he tried to fool the official at the end but he doesn't redskins blitz there you see wilbur marshall start charles mann on a twist inside [Music] whoa what a shot they're the two toughest hitters on the ball club one high and one low that play will be reviewed to see if he actually came down with the ball because the ground couldn't cause the fumble but it looked like it looked like that fumble was caused by todd ball like 23 and 40 caused a fumble and they're harder than the ground oh gee what a shot he took in the head on that one [Music] he peaks a little bit to see if foals is coming and he doesn't get disappointed then alvin walton hits todd bowles doesn't even hit kelvin martin that blood there you see the ball on the ground play stands as ruled after the review and the cowboys will have to pump with 9 24 to go [Applause] nice kick by saxon drives howard all the way back to the eight-yard line and howard gets it back to the 15. 53-yard punt a return of six cornell burbidge down on special teams to make the tackle the storyline of this one has been missed opportunities and paul palmer rushing for 83 yards the redskins as a team only 45. dallas has not made the killer mistake no turnovers no penalty the redskins with two doug williams interception and dallas gets only its second touchdown all year in the third quarter to lead 10-3 he played the philadelphia eagles back in 1984 i believe and they had no penalties and no turnovers and and lost him in a close ball game so you've got to force the turnovers they make the biggest difference in victories and losses finer on the delay behind jacoby ernest feiner out to the 24 yard line finer said this team was embarrassed against the raiders and everybody wanted to make amends for that they said they stunk out the joint last week they were right i think it was a very uh you know in all truth i know the raiders played a great game today um but against cincinnati but really the raiders struggled a little bit last week too i mean the ball was back and forth and you know there's their scoring drive 17 d's seven tds 35 starting at their own 20. they can't get it done [Applause] second and a yard after the pass play game nine or after the delay game nine reddit williams throws low did viner catch it or not the officials have not made a ruling yet now they say it's caught [Applause] all britain certainly didn't agree neither did jimmy johnson and now they'll bring it back there you see doug williams not his strong suit throwing on the run there you see the ball hit the ground that is not a catch third and one something the redskins the line judges mailed on a lot this year but not tonight now the line judge and the field judge have bad angles they're coming in from the side it's up to the back goods to make the call and that time third and yard morris hit by two tall jones and that is what has happened to the redskins on third and short all year long somebody penetrated [Applause] big head two tall jones had one more play against the redskins right side of your screen you'll see him come in and make the play ernest beiner just flat missed him that was a lookout block by ernest binder number 21 and big ed was on the slant and made the hit two tall jones over a thousand tackles in his career and the redskins will have to kick it away again a lot of them against me mojenko with a returnable punt to shepherd boy shepard has taken some shots tonight four yard return after a 41-yard punt but there's a flag down on the play terry orr was in on the first hit ed jones a class act has been for a long long time he was going to be benched earlier in the year not yet 200 straight starts personal fall unnecessary roughness number 30 on the kicking team after the play 15 yards from the dead ball spot first time what a huge break for the cowboys joe mickels is called for the unnecessary roughness penalty that will put the ball in washington territory watch the left side of your screen number 30 makes contact with bill bates now there's the right hand in the head you just can't do it i don't know whether these guys think that those seven guys in striped shirts aren't looking i mean especially you don't want to do things to hurt your ball club could be the worst penalty the redskins have committed this year it puts the ball at the washington 44. dallas needs maybe a first down and a half to be in field goal rank paul palmer nice cutback inside the 40 to the 39. again the cowboys not doing anything fancy they line up with the two wide receivers and they let calvin martin run back and forth and then they go ahead and hand the ball to paul palmer there's a veteran telling his football team that i can taste this seven minutes that's all it is he's reminding the guys look at the clock seven minutes that's all we have to play i'll say it they gotta get excited being this close to number one even though they are oh and eight every team they have played has come out of the game saying hey these guys play hard and they play hard tonight the clock becoming a big redskins enemy [Applause] palmer again 25 and more bowls and davis brought him down [Applause] this puts dallas within field goal range and puts paul palmer over the 100-yard mark for the night boy joe gibbs can see the season slipping away before his very eyes tracy rocker takes an inside charles mann takes it outside and paul palmer comes in between them he'll go over 100 yards here's a guy who's been in camp three weeks three weeks he's been with the cowboys and he'll go over 100. joe gibbs i don't think you would have believed if you told him dallas would have four points ten points in the fourth quarter that he wouldn't be way ahead [Applause] [Music] [Applause] palmer again and charles mann slips through a loss of a yard on the tackle now you if you're dallas right now you can't get too conservative because roger rousek has not exactly lit the world on fire with his foot and if he lines up to kick a field goal from somewhere around the 25 we're talking 32 42 yards statistics would say that's not a very good shot for the cowboys redskins have plenty of time to go down and tie it send this thing into overtime and you let it get away they can't get out of their game plan i still think walsh has got to throw the football [Applause] but they are certainly taking time off the clock it nears five minutes comes the blitz and waltz on the little roll trying to get away from manly and daryl grant came back to make the tackle dexter was not full on that one you wouldn't expect it from steve walsh but that's basically what they did a lot of times coaches to not risk a fumble if you don't hand the ball off you don't have to worry about it and that's exactly what they're doing the cowboys i think are sitting too early on this one i think they should still stay in their game play and let walsh throw the ball a little bit and try and do it it's a little tough to blame them though isn't it and 018 and they're up by seven i'd be a little conservative too project it any way you can protect and protect it you can bet the redskins are going to be coming after them too [Applause] can't get a hand on it can't bring it in aj johnson was out there on the coverage and charles mann was in steve walsh's face nate newton has been shaken up he's out of the ballgame so rookie mark stefanowski out of pit is in there on the offensive line and rouzek will come on to try his biggest field goal of the year could be of his life could be could be of his career yeah they'll spot the ball at the 33. it's a 43-yard field goal attempt he is four of 10 this year one out of two in this game the redskins only have 10 men on the field rushing on an 11. plenty of distance and roger rosette has put the dallas cowboys up 13-3 with to go in the game there's a guy responding to pressure he has not been kicking well obviously the statistics bear it out he comes through with the biggest kick of the year and i'm sure his career to date you can't say enough about what the dallas defense has done tonight statistically one of the poorest defenses in the league giving up yards points you name it they've given it up but they played very well against phoenix last week on defense did not allow a touchdown and they have played brilliantly tonight ben don't break they haven't even bent that much you know what they've done mike they've done a great job of disguising the defenses a lot of teams i read in the clippings were commenting that they were very simplistic and that it was easy to go against them and even the redskins made that comment in the first game and in talking to their defensive people everson walls explaining he said we're trying to disguise our defenses a little more and become more effective same defense but we just want to give people different looks and they have jimmy johnson said he was really tired of being the soft spot on everybody's schedule not the soft spot anymore a lot of redskins fans are going to try to beat the traffic i'll tell you i haven't been in this stadium in a long time but when i played here all the years i played i don't remember people leaving this early not this many of them they're walking out in droves and the redskins need something they haven't had so far tonight some big plays sanders cut down at the 27-yard line again this would drop the redskins to four and five and i would think virtually put them out of business and roger rousek finishes it off a 43-yard field goal maybe the most important stat outside of the fact he made the field goal is they used up 3 21 on the clock that's right obviously the clock is their ally the redskins have got to go to their red ball or two-minute offense right now they cannot afford to huddle they've got to get a quick score and then play good defense and get the ball back [Applause] williams guns this one the court completed the 45 and here comes the hurry up now you're going to see an offensive line that knows how to run the hurry up that's really the key to the two minute or hurry up offense is how quickly your linemen can get set [Applause] and these guys do a great job williams with a lot of time for art monk overthrown good coverage by williams that time stops the clock with 3 32. the redskins are not done yet though folks they're down by 10 have all their timeouts left in the ball but here's what they have to face look at the next three weeks now they got go to philadelphia get denver here in chicago here this is a game as they looked at their schedule in november they felt and believed that they had to beat the redskins and get ready for the eagles dallas road i beat the cowboys i'm sorry they beat the redskins is what they're beating they're beating themselves but get beat the cowboys and get ready for the eagles it's that first step they've forgotten so far [Applause] nice throw by doug williams he's got another first down at the 43-yard line as art monk grabbed it moving as fast as they can you see the clock on your screen williams 25 out of 43 253 yards tonight chase by two call jones unloads monk was open couldn't hold it walls and horton back on the coverage momentarily art monk had a step great job by jeff coat and ed jones to flush doug williams out of the pocket so that he couldn't set to throw it there you see art monk he's going to go by everson walls now he's by him problem is is doug williams isn't ready to throw the football he has to throw it off balance and it gave horton time to get over ball is spotted at the dallas 43 second and 10. the redskins need two scores cowboys obviously playing a zone defense they'll line up make it look like man then back out [Applause] gary clark with williams and cotton holder that was no zone williams and clark were man for man and clark for a while had a step clark killed him didn't have a step he flat feed him off the line doug williams does i think he thinks his arm is stronger than his watch gary clark he's just gonna kill robert williams he's by him by four yards right now doug williams had let the ball go robert williams would have never caught him as a matter of fact he thought it was all over now gary clark's doing everything he can to get in position robert williams does a good job of just going up not to try and intercept it but knock the ball away why do you play zone so much and be so successful with it and then stick williams out there and gary clark desperate people they want to win third and ten williams got rid of it monk tried for the diving catches at 28 but couldn't get it fourth and 10 with 250 to go one of the few times williams has been under pressure from the rush this is where the rustiness of doug williams is showing he's he's been late with every deep pattern he's tried to throw don bros signaling it in the the gentleman with the white cap the running back coach of the redskins he signals the play in and this is it this isn't this is not the game for the redskins this is a season of salvage right here look at jimmy johnson you don't think he's rooting his charges on [Applause] fourth and ten last shot for the skins williams from monken thrown out of bounds dallas will take over on downs and the cowboy sideline already starts to celebrate when there is nothing but dejection on the washington sideline you know the redskins go on to lose this mike makes them four and five we talked to joe gibbs at length and jimmy jimmy's saying hang on to the ball don't put it on the ground but we talked to joe gibbs at length about his football team over the last couple years and he said hey i don't like losing especially after we've won so much and if it's time to leave i'm going to make the decision nobody's going to have to tell me to go this has got to leave a terrible taste in his house sure does they'll go to the eye now try to keep it on the ground and work time off the clock palmer does more than hold on to the football now he lost it cowboys got it back holy cow the only thing paul palmer had to do was hang on to the football and he fumbled it well he's trying to he switches it from one hand to the other uh paul palmer he thinks that he's out running running in the first quarter this has been the book on him you see he doesn't really put it away he should get in traffic and cover it up with two hands this guy is protecting a lead protecting the first victory for his football team mark stepnowski hustling downfield made the recovery jimmy jimmy johnson on the sideline saying hey son i think he just drove his point home listen don't do that tom landry won the last game of his professional career here it looks like jimmy johnson will win his first here and joe gibbs has had to look at both of them two timeouts remaining williams had it had one shot at gary clark in that last drive when he beat robert williams up the field and it got away from him all the other throws really really didn't have a prayer on 2 31 to go in the game and the cowboys are loving it there's david howard number 99. [Applause] toddler tossy is in at tailback and you can believe he'll hang on to the football and the redskins will use a time-out to stop it with 226. now the redskins will only have one timeout left if they use that then it'll go to the two minute to act as another one but they still need two scores here's what you'll see in the paper tomorrow bo jackson with a 92-yard touchdown run it is a raiders record the instant replay really had an impact today as green bay got the winning touchdown against the bears on the reversal of a call terry metcalf 200 eric excuse me 233 total yards and miami holy cow more rushing yards than passing first happens about once a decade doesn't well did first time since 1985 and the rams vikings game one of the greatest games i've seen in years rich carlos had seven field goals seven out of seven minnesota did not score a touchdown got 23 points and they won it on a safety in overtime incredible football game if this is the way the second half of the season is going to start there's a lot of great football head and i am thrilled that we're now broadcasting it on espn there's jerry jones coming down to the field and this is the first time experience for him here comes the reverse to dixon dixon knocked out of bounds i gotta be honest with you mike this is difficult what was that i think is this what we're going to see from jimmy johnson i mean is this the kind of football that you sit on the ball with you know you tell your team cover it up the first time he tells it running back to dead he puts it on the ground and usually you know you don't want to exchange the ball a lot you got two handoffs now you've got halfbacks handing the ball to wide receivers i have seen more intercept or more fumbles on plays like that than i have successful handoff jerry jones the new owner of the cowboys jimmy johnson of course one of his best friends they were teammates together at arkansas gave him a 10-year contract they'll keep it on the ground work on the clock again take it down while the redskins will use their last timeout to stop it with 213. but here's the situation the redskins are out of timeouts dallas has the football dallas leads by 10. and they've got three more downs to run it if they want does not look good for joe gibbs and you have to believe that the redskins fall to four and five as they're surely going to at this point in the season with the schedule they have left uh they are not going to make the playoffs oh you're right you know thing is is another question comes up who's going to be the quarterback next week for the washington redskins sportscenter immediately follows our telecast we'll update you on everything that's gone on on today in the nfl the new york city marathon and a chat with pete rozelle and as joe mentioned earlier the man has never really gotten the accolades he deserves for the unbelievable job he has done in building the national footballer he's been a peacemaker he's been a negotiator and i think he's proven tremendous leadership and and what allowed the national football league to grow for the great game it is and there's a guy who's just become a part of it and really i guess after your first victory you can honestly say you're now a part of it paul palmer is back in the tailback and he'll get the carry burrows into the line that time greg minuski was there to make the tackle the redskins cannot stop the clock anymore the two-minute warning will but all it does is suspend the inevitable two minutes to go 13-3 dallas doug williams has pulled off his share of miracles during an exceptional career but he's not going to get one tonight as the dallas cowboys lead by 10 two minutes to go they have the football at the redskins 32. and the bottom line mike has has been what it's always been is turnovers uh through the first eight games of the season teams with the fewer turnovers have won 74 games 20 that have been lost and 18 have been equal i mean it's if you turn the ball over you just can't win in this game and dallas has not turned it over tonight paul palmer raven caldwell makes the tackle i have to believe joe looking at joe gibbs on the sideline tonight that there probably has never been a lower point in his professional coaching career than what he feels right now i absolutely have to agree with you i know the man he's a very close friend i know how much this hurts him uh you know what do you say to your football team i mean you knew how important this game was you didn't really have to say anything to him forget the cowboys are on eight these guys aren't playing the cowboys they're playing for pride as they call it and it's the kind of thing that just i mean what do you say to him i mean every it's time that the redskins each and every one of them look at each other and say now we have to play purely for pride because there's there's no carrot at the end walt rolling like he's going to throw and then eastern as raven caldwell pulls him down you know i didn't get that one i don't either i mean you know it's okay to to roll out and stuff but why take a sack and give up 20 more yards and put the redskins closer you know theoretically run this with me okay two or three plays boom boom boom they're in the end zone you got 40 35 seconds left you kick an on side kick roll miller's got a great leg you complete one pass and now you're going to overtime when you've got it right in your hands miracles have happened that's the first time the redskins have started outside their own 27-yard line tonight after they lose the ball on down [Applause] williams steps inside pressure throws complete trying to get out of bounds clark but he didn't he was hit in bounds now gary clark arguing with the official as the clock winds down to 49 seconds robert williams made the tackle redskins have no timeouts williams over the minute that's not the place of going to football you just don't have enough time to throw the football over the middle this telecast presented by authority of the national football league intended for the private use of our audience and he rebroadcast without the express written consent of the national football league is prohibited well the redskins just have to throw the ball in the end zone again they dump it off and byner runs it out of bounds 20 seconds to go in the game if they were down by seven that would be one thing they're down by ten they need two scores the the pass before this one's the one that's got me baffled a little bit you don't there's no reason to throw the ball they should be throwing the ball down so what if it's intercepted you don't care if the ball is intercepted now statistics don't mean much ask the minnesota vikings about throwing the ball into a bunch of people and you got hassan jones running up and making it absolutely you know not one catch but he repeated almost you know he almost had the first one made a sensational catch in the second williams to the end zone this time knocked away horton got his hands on it intended for gary clark with 15 seconds left sportscenter follows our telecast remember next week we will be in san diego to see the chargers and the resurgent raiders you know before we say that oh you know doug williams was responsible doug one man doesn't lose a football the credit has got to go to the dallas cowboys tonight they took this game right to the redskins right in their own backyard and they came in and they physically outplayed them they just physically outplayed directions finer to the nine bill banks makes the tackle clock running down skins trying to get off one last play but it hardly matters gun has gone off it's over the dallas cowboys get their first win ever under jimmy johnson after an 0-8 start and for jerry jones and jimmy johnson and the cowboy players and their fans what a great night this has to be if there's anybody in this lake they wanted to beat it was the washington redskins big ed jones his last time in rfk and jimmy junk he didn't have a space for that ball in his office but he's got one now our final score the dallas cowboys 13 the washington redskins 3. for joe theismann this is mike patrick for our entire espn crew saying goodnight from rfk stadium coming up next sportscenter let's join bob lee and dan
