today Jase trainer will watch his former team while speed Burleigh makes his first start this season the dynamic receiving cannibal Willie gold while veterans try to recapture Old Glory new spirit is alive in Los Angeles good afternoon and welcome to the Los Angeles Coliseum for today's game between the Washington Redskins and the Los Angeles Raiders the Redskins arrived here in Southern California late yesterday afternoon talking about how important this game is and as you look at the standings and the NFC's Washington is at four and three having lost twice to the Giants and once to Philadelphia in the AFC West the Raiders are three games behind Denver but they've won two of their three games under new head coach art shell and good afternoon everybody I'm Tim Brant and welcome to Los Angeles and week eight here on CBS as we reach the halfway mark of the NFL season the Washington Redskins come in here rather banged up Darryl Greene had his wrist surgically repaired this past week and now we get word that Gerald Riggs his ankles have not really responded to treatment this week and as we turned to Dan jiggets Dan Willy player will he not play he may get in some playing time Tim I saw him down on the field earlier and he was running some routes and didn't look too bad but I think really Joe Gibbs wants to hold him out because he didn't get in any practice what that means now for the Redskins is Jamie Morrison earnest Byner gonna have to pick up the slack mark Ripon expect to see him throwing a lot of crossing patterns to his wide receivers because the Raiders placed so much man-to-man defense talking about the passing game Steve Beuerlein will start in place of Jay Schrader much to the dismay of many of the players well I know a couple of mentioned that they really want to get one more shot at Jacob Dexter Manley in particular but you know when you think about Steve Beuerlein starting at the quarterback position for the Raiders you start thinking about them going back for the vertical game again throwing deep and that means that this really going to test that secondary of the Washington Redskins now of course Ark shell the head coach of the Raiders told us something the other days going back to those old Raider ways he says now we have to respect our opponents but we can't be afraid of don't be afraid to win all right Dan the weather is sensational temperatures expected to be in the 80s that could be a factor late in this ballgame because the breeze is almost non-existent we are expecting some Santa Ana winds to blow through here later today but this day's bought me that could be a factor late in the game I hope those wins hurry up and get here believe it or not the Redskins are making their first LA Coliseum appearance in 15 seasons for the loss to the Rams in the 74 divisional playoff says you look at Jeff Yeager he'll be kicking off for the Raiders on deep for Washington will be number 80 Joe Howard and 47 AJ Johnson and Jackson will be standing at the goal line Saxons averaging 23 yards per return built in the NFC Howard is also named there's a world away it'll be talked some people in the end zone touchback so the wood skins will take over at the 20 yard line so mock ripping comes on for the Washington offense and the rest of the talent that he'll be huddling up with on this very first series big strong offensive line it's the veteran line that's been there for so long they call him the Holmes Jamie Morris in the backfield not gelled ribs loads up in the eye borĂ¥s on first down [Applause] Morris off the right side [Applause] finds a hole and gets about five factor was made by lotto Washington will say that offensive line up now for the Redskins this is who they start Lachey grim Bostick big mark may who's playing with a broken wrist and Jake Joe Jacobi the tight end of course is Don Warren and in the backfield it is Jamie Morris the wideouts monkey Sanders along with Gary Clark most productive wide receiver trio in the league [Applause] [Applause] they almost immediately defensively how a loan is back this is his second start after injuries Bob Bullock the longtime veteran out of Notre Dame in the middle and Scott Davis upfront the linebackers King Robinson is back after a long absence from injury Benson the leading tackler and great talents and a secondary pain starts in place of terry mcdaniel is banged up Washington Anderson and Hartley passing downs Carter and [Applause] Ricky Sanders wanted to cut in and of course mark Griffin wanted to throw out against the problem sometimes where the reads are you getting a man are you getting the kind of coverage that the quarterback thinks you getting and the same kind of the receivers getting they have to get on the same page so Malenko comes on a kick for Washington Bobby Jo Edmonds will be the d-pad for the Raiders you see the numbers on mochiko this year edmonds getting at his own 30 this is rejuvenated Los Angeles team no question about that Edmonds at the 38 to the 45 that's where the Raiders ballet starts with excellent field position the tackle was made by herb Welch he's just acquired by the Redskins there was a very poor kick by Moshe Anka I know he just didn't get it up in the air very well and and as a result it kind of hit short 49 yards 39-yard punt 5 yard return that means maybe should have thrown on fourth down [Applause] Gregg passion is the rough way today very emphatic with that call so they moved the Raiders back and they will not start there with that excellent field position natalie was on step on Adams sober line comes on Tim when you make those kinds of penalties and you take your team out of a real good field position when you come off to the sideline you avoid the head coach you're gonna under the far side of the bench and try to get away from all of all of the coaching staff you don't want to see them Steve Smith and Bo Jackson as Jackson gets his first start of the night mostly out Raiders her loss pushed out to the quarry the offensive starters graves who has struggled at that left tackle spot he said most ball was me she's a rookie and he'll be going against the other rookie rocker today Wilkerson Mike dials the tight end in the backfield we mentioned that bo Jackson gets his first start of the year he's back there with Steve Smith out of Penn State Willie Gault Fernandez with the Flyers outside fans Europe and Tim where obvious passive situations most outrageous Jackson goes to a wide receipt of the modern mystery backside pressure [Applause] sighs almost at the 44 Greg minovsky will get credit with the tackle there's another situation all coincidence key comes in up front for the Redskins manly grant Tracy rocker will start in place to cook cooked is out he's bagged up and man Marshall Manu ski and Caldwell of the linebackers and Monty Coleman has a hamstring injury Davis will burn bowls and Walton will burn goes at the quarterback spot replacing green AJ Johnson and Martin may you will be the nickel and dimed backs second down and four along for this is Jackson Todd Bowles puts him up there good block the next time I the left side that offensive line for the Raiders and one of the keys is Steve Smith number 35 the full-back leading Bo up into the hole got a nice block at the point of attack that's what really helps your running back get that extra yard or two you know when you clean that hole out for him suddenly he's got that vision doesn't have to try to cut back and just get straight up the feeling and run where the play was designed to go interesting oh damn Bo Jackson is not rushed for 100 yards in any of the last 14 games he's played I'm sure the Redskins gonna wish you didn't say [Applause] first down Raiders at midfield there is nice cut to the inside and bangs just way down to the 45 again it Scott Bowles but will get credit for the tackle one of the things the Raiders are doing fairly successfully with that young offensive line is getting some nice reach blocks now watch these guys along the line in a scrimmage reach out get their men and now you see there's nobody really back there to give Bo Jackson any problem in his back hill now he gets through that line of scrimmage he still got a little Running Room in there but that offensive line is reaching to the side of the play that is stepping out and going through the side of the play call second down and four Raiders plenty of time throws at the 24-yard so like catch by Brooklyn Fernandez he's giving a great deal of respect from Albin Walton number forty Alvin knows the speed that murdered Fernandez has now watch him he's going to be on the right side of your screen as it but he seems to be the left side as the play develops you gonna see number 86 Mervyn Fernandez he ran down and ran a stop right there push the album wall off you see Alvin's back about five or six yards gave him that respect because he knows that those wide receivers will taking up the distance take it into the end zone and scored six points on a gain of 21 [Applause] pushdown orators play inside the smithy there's the ball to the 17-yard line they picked the pitch to Jackson and gave it straight ahead Raven Caldwell made the tackle then you go back to some of the old things that made Raider team's special and even more the Washington Redskins same kind of thing running game makes you special just solidify your running game and then you go on and with the passing game you kind of get things develop there but for the Raiders it meant going downfield going deep even with a vertical stretch offense second down at five [Applause] Dorothy puts down [Applause] six touchdown catch of the year for Fernandez that's the best in the AFC third catch of this drive that was an 18 yard strike so Jeff Jagger comes on to attempt the extra point Jeff Gossett the punter will hold its up then it's good [Applause] at Los Angeles strikes quickly you know it doesn't take long for the Raiders to go when they say they're gonna go back to that vertical offense find those receivers downfield I got a great deal of speed at the wide receiver position and they just simply murmur and fernanda's assembly goes down and beats Barry will burn on the corner just takes it to the post six points touchdown that's the way their office now watch right the middle of your screen is actually where Mervyn Fernandez is going to end up Steve Beuerlein had a problem scoring inside the 20 I was one of the things the Ritter's looked down on them about but he's really getting it together and you see right there with the touchdown to murder Fernandez excellent pass one of the other reasons why you can be successful on the place such as that one is if your offensive line forms that pocket of protection for the quarterback watch the pocket protection as Steve Beuerlein gets on this play offensive line does a great job against that Washington Redskins rush Charles Mann coming in there trying to get the rip underneath nobody's really around the quarterback no wonder you drew a touchdown pass the Raiders have been shut out six of the 12 quarters they've played under art shelf but they strike quickly here pretenders with three catches that was a strike and they were working on that right side where normally arrow green would be well you know they're gonna test it do the guys replacing Darrell Green in a case berry will burn you know they're gonna test you a little bit just to see what you're made of and certainly you have to face guys like Fernandez or golf that's a test in itself anything without them throwing the football year away seven plays 73 yards it took only three minutes and 51 seconds and the 18 yard touchdown pass so Jeff Jagger comes on to kick again and a Joe Howard and AJ Johnson Turkey for Washington a swift kick its Johnson Johnson gets the block and carries tacklers to the 24 yard line that's where Washington will start after a 17 yard return the tackle was made by Ethan Horton so whipping comes on for his second series of the afternoon pasla happy birthdays to mark Griffin's young daughter she was one year old a few days ago amber he mentioned that the first thing you mentioned when he met with him I know he's very excited about having that young daughter that's been a year [Applause] see House got his first start at his baby alcohol in the same week action for victims [Applause] it was intended for his tight end God warned [Applause] Gary Robinson was the linebacker in the area boo play-action there off the counter tray they they ran the counter trait earlier in the last series and kind of set that up for the play action now and came back with it but Mark Griffin just couldn't find on worn down field under threw him just a little bit 9 minutes 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter it's 7 nothing Raiders Tim Brant along with Dan jackets at the LA Coliseum let's go to for libel Cedars is set [Applause] how long is over they walked working against Russ Russ Grimm how he's coming back he said now he oh he's perfectly healthy areas right here watch them on the outside rush just comes around the corner and gets mark ripping see that armor rip working against mark May right there later on he gets in there and wow he hits mark gripping right in the chest now how are we long toast the other day said he's back to about 90% at the calf operated on and he's trying to come back from that and certainly it looks like he's doing that a special game and it's incomplete and target intended for art month [Applause] we want to welcome those of you who have been watching the Rams in Chicago game the Bears winning that 122 10 here in Los Angeles it's the Raiders 7 and Washington nothing Mervin fernandez with a touchdown catch from Steve Beuerlein 18 yards the only score in the ball game Shaco will be kicking for the second time this afternoon we saw Bobby Joe Edmonds deep for the Raiders it's a low tail-wagger Edmonds takes it at 232 and returns it to the 40 so it's a 52-yard punt a return of 16 yards in the tackle is made by Kurt Gouveia but again Dan the Raiders start with five field position and that's really one of the keys to the what you can do offensively now for the Rays suddenly you don't have to worry about you know trying to grind the ball out get it away from your end zone and those kinds of things you can be a little bit more flexible with your passing game you can try to go back to that vertical game and maybe try to get another one of those wide receivers a golf tour Fernandez loosen the secondary of the Redskins bo Jackson at Steve Smith in the backfield at spur line the quarterback on first down for the Raiders get straight ahead and again he finds some yardage up the middle break Madhu ski will get credit with that tackle you know often people will ask well why do you run a dive play like that where you pull back where you gain - it's where yards well some of the things you're doing is you're trying to set up some other things you want to leave that full backup in there a couple of times in it you lead him up and then hand the ball off to Bo outside or something like that so you're setting things up being very careful or stretching your outfits so that it all comes into play make some sense just having Bo Jackson in the back [Applause] ten you will see the second area of the Redskins give the wide receivers from the Raiders a lot of cushion you have to with this kind of speed in this case Brian Davis number 34 working on the right side of your screen is gonna get Willie Gault about a 10-yard cushion Gault runs to stop at about 10 yards UC Davis off again now he's got to react back but that's the way you stopped from getting beat and certainly that's got to be the thing that's on the mind of the secondary of the Redskins fifteen days later at the rixton four teams snip big hole to the outside it's to the 15 go onto that running game and sending you full backup inside now he comes on back outside good blocking to the front side that is the play call side if Steve Smith disassembly squeezes didn't that watch the blocking up over here then tied it from the tackle from the left tackle watch that blocking along the line of scrimmage you see them pick it up there guys Roy graves there it's got a nice block on Dexter Manley number 72 that allows Steve Smith number 35 the squeezing up there Mervin Fernandez 86 rather see the downfield [Applause] ravers at the tone [Applause] Washington Bo Jackson left side gets a couple talked in the last play about Dexter Manley and how he he got handled that time by Roy graze that time tried to come inside Roy just kind of carried him around he you didn't look great on the play but there was effective still and tackle was made by Wilbur Marshall Bo's and manly was in there it'll be second down and seven at the eighties you look at art shale now in his fourth game as head coach played collegiately at Maryland State 42 years old 22 years with the Raiders organization [Applause] Fernandes in the corner touchdown Raiders [Applause] in dance is having a field day against Washington his fourth catch his second touchdown you're very we'll bring you know that this lot you seem to keep those going on yet go out on you what do you do so you play a little soft you got to remember though if the guy gets in the endzone with the football he scores that's six points what happens in this case is Barrett will burn doesn't read that little fade route that you see Fernandez running here Steve Beuerlein was a nice little touch of the ball just better sit in there and watch the faith he just kind of pulls away ghosts and sidelines now watch the sidelines and make sure he gets both feet in one two he drags that other one in there six points touchdown Raiders you're still questioning the call they replayed it and it stands I was six nineteen 14 Washington nothing take another look at that plate just that he had to make sure that Mervyn Fernandez has both feet and bounce as he catches the ball see where those feet are here's the ball being delivered right there one foots down the left foots down the right foot is down no question of touchdown for the Raiders how do you do Washington comes in swerving Mervin Fernandez you know I asked him for a couple of stories on himself the other day and practice he says he wants to get a little bit more publicity gentlemen he said but unfortunately I can't tell you any stories that you could tell on TV I said Mervyn he's got to get some material for us buddy Fernandez Cartier has caught a pass and 22 consecutive games now he has 25 receptions on the year but the most incredible thing as you look at the statistics the average is 22 yards a catch well I remember when the Raiders were trying to get him out of Canada and Al Davis told us we're out here for a game and he tells he says I got this guy number for Kemp from Canada that you just won't believe he says this guy's gonna be a great wide receiver for his told us about his size and all that of course Mervin grew up out here in the San Jose area and certainly out Davis was correct on that guy tell you one thing that the you had him and Willie Gault together it's a scary combination for any defensive secondary how about burr line five for five 73 yards and two touchdowns one of those guys that has never lacked for confidence and certainly he displayed that to us the other day we had our conversation with him Jagger to kickoff for the third time Howard and AJ Johnson deep began for Washington this is Jail [Applause] as well as Washington Redskins fans no flags this may be attract me today I tell you one thing there's a track around here they ran the Olympics here and I think these guys might want to get outside and put it on that surface outside you know when you run that ball back and everybody says take it up the field take it straight up the field when you run it back but that time how front a little little crease outside just broke it outside great blocking up front that was designed to go that way by the way we took it 99 yards for the touchdown to get his Redskins back in this ballgame Joe Howard played basketball and football at Notre Dame Washington high school product from John Carroll High School in the Metro Conference 99 yard kickoff return good look at chip low Miller you'll be able to see for yourself where that ball comes and it's good it's the longest kickoff return in history and Washington now trails by seven Tim I remember we talked to this young man in the last game on a pre-season down in New Orleans and he was hoping that he could make an impact on special teams now watching making him back here for the Redskins watched the blocking up front right there key blocks thrown up front and all of a sudden Joe Howard is in the open it's a footrace and nobody's gonna beat him to the endzone I don't think if Willie Gault was out there he could have got him [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this will take Edmonds way into the back of the end zone and he'll down it there for a touchback she will bring it out to the 20 [Applause] a magnificent cloudless day in Los Angeles you can even see the hills from where we're sitting today not much smog Tim Brant along with Dan jiggetts and if you're just joining us you've missed some fireworks burgers Fernandez two touchdown catches and Joe Howard just returned to kick off 99 yards and it's the Raiders 14 Washington seventh who 555 remaining first period let's do curricular activity pushing each other between these two folks that's to be expected all the waves to travel wave still that old waiter trying to go and credit garabrant really was mixing that play up he's slamming it he got music number 63 for the Raiders jammed up in the backfield really disrupted the play and stop Bo Jackson from advancing downfield Darryl grant having a five-year with Washington three and a half sacks an interception fumble recovery forced fumble as look at Bo Jackson a calling world six 1975 pound nine-year veteran Darryl grant second down and 11 for the Raiders underneath to his tight end dial and dial was out to the 24-yard line you know what I expect to see a little bit more out of the Redskins defense Timbers a few more games up front some twists some stunts not necessarily bringing you know a blitzing the linebackers and secondary people but I think mixing it up and twisting on that that offensive line of the raid is because that Raiders line is young I think you can really scare them with some some stunts up front and I fully expect that that's what's going to happen with the Washington Redskins Bo Jackson comes out of the lineup you see their bats Bueller comes and replaces him rich kids now go to six defensive backs on third down [Applause] six miscommunication between Vance Mueller and Steve Beuerlein you see Wilbur Marshall thought he had a shot at the pass Wilbur could taste that one formula cut in well a lot of times they call them choice routes you know if you read and man then you you break it off inside or if your meat if you're reading zone you break it off outside and that's the case where both the receiver and the court and the quarterback have to read the same thing and be on the same page otherwise we'll have that situation that was the first missed for Berlin today six per seven with two touchdowns and Joe Howard still got to be winded after that kickoff return hi wobbly punt taken at the 47 failed immediately Steve straw hand made the tackle 39-yard punt one-yard return look at Jerry West enjoy the sunny afternoon here he's got to be enjoying this were all the jump balls we've seen so far on the stomping matters from the fur line you might be thinking about signing a few of these players from the Raiders have some more Bo Jackson's in the bag this field position of the game for Washington Jamie Morris taken down from behind by how a loan and a Redskins lose three yards and when you run that counter tray like Washington loves to run and of course everybody in the world knows you're gonna run it how he log read at that time watch him on the backside of the plate just come right in jump right in on that play watch number 75 Holly log right there come right back trail the play and make the stop in the backfield of the Washington Redskins he's seen that place so many times he goes a look you're not pulling me with the counter tray I'm not gonna let you block back on me and take me out I'm just gonna follow the guard right down it's fine listen with time goes into the direction of art monk but he got tangled up out there and fell flags he was out there bumping with Hanes ripping now Oh for four my case is one of those guys has been around for a long long time since Pig season in the National Football League didn't know whether or not he might get a start today but he said hey look at my age you just come out there and if they ask you to start you start if they tell you you're not gonna start you just go over there do whatever you can on special teams and that's asking a lot of a guy that's been around 50 years starting a place of terry mcdaniel a back spasm [Music] everybody jumps and Howie Long comes over to try to get a free shot we'll wait and see if he was drawn we know one thing about how he's always gonna point out who drew mauve [Applause] long has played 113 League games as a Raider that's the most of any Raider look at her he's trying to tuck this card number 63 on the offense still third down see that's how he's gonna find somebody a point about to tell the refs that's absolutely what he's gonna do Rowley Mackenzie number 63 for the Redskins is the man who was nabbed I said he's got a lot of acting offers out here in the Los Angeles area since he's since the Raiders moved down here that's one of the things that he may pursue when he's finished playing football but now he says since our shells a coach here he was thinking about two more years before our took over and now he wants to play four or five as long as he can until he ran him off Raiders have several thespians yes they do Willie Gault is one too [Applause] he's third down at 17 Redskins with the fortitude again walljumps and the place whistled dead false start on the right side way up there they won't tell you who it is this time but Mackenzie was over there with Lachey Co how he's down there having the conversation now he's a diplomat say after he gets you to rock back a little bit name wants to talk to him make nice for you here's another replay of the watch the right side left side of that offensive line for the Redskins and I really can't see anybody moving except how he long he looks like the guy that jumped off on that play so to be third down in 22 at the 27 the mark blue six defensive backs for the Raiders this question [Applause] because it was clearly in the front partly because how he long was working on the twist that time and really got in the face of mark Griffin watch how he long take his route around this way miss Entwistle Scott Davis coming across here and as a result they could write in mark rip in space this Howard going along on the twist comes around mark man really can't get him he's got the baton there that flush is ripping out of the pocket now he has to try to dump it offshore Danko's [Applause] way back to the goal line [Applause] wait hunt and Bobby Joe Evans shouldn't let that punk continue on into the end zone bring it back out to the 20 a 73 yard punt by mischenko a 17 yard return three minutes 12 seconds remain first quarter here at the LA Coliseum 14 to 7 Raiders Bo Jackson continues to boggle the minds of sports fans in America MVP in the 1989 all-star game and he is the only athlete in the United States today who could end up most valuable player in both baseball and football it's conceivable certainly as Bo knows how to do a lot of things and you know bogey knows how how to play baseball bo knows football bo also knows how to say no yesterday we tried to get him for an interview boy did he do an open field run on us he broke one way broke the other way it took off said he had to go pick up his kids at the babysitter bo knows tracie rocker was a teammate of bo Jackson so he never really lifted weights he's just naturally strong pushdown are they [Applause] Merlin's got manly coming after he drops into Smith Smith is taken down at the 17 yard line they'll market it's a loss tackle was made by Charles Mann Tim you see how well the defense of the Redskins played that screen though he saw the tackle from the from the Raiders dropped back and tried to cut the defensive end they took the defensive in about two days to get day and he never really did get there because you read the screen right away that being Charles Mann fell back off of that very nice read that time about the defense of the Redskins on the screenplay [Applause] it is he's got backs up pushing those almost finished Alvin Walkman it was intended for commandos again right now Alvin Walton is saying to himself if I had a pair of hands out I caught that one because it hit him in a dangerous spot right in his hands and he could have taken off and scored with that one this year second in the NFC third in the NFL what happens many times it was when a receiver crosses in front of you and then all of a sudden that ball comes right behind him you don't have enough time to visualize it making an excuse rather than wall because certain I'm sure he'll tell you he should have caught the ball as well what made you comes into the secondary now for Washington as the Redskins go to 60 but so far man's fallen also in the game down at 11 [Applause] fool on has held a backside person throws it across the middle and it's caught for push down like Alexander's first catch of the afternoon and a big big play for LA Pike Alexander did something that's very smart for a young watt receiver to do watch him on the right side of your screen he's going to see this quarterback roll out to that right side Steve Beuerlein got good time good protection but Alexander uncovers down because now you see him at the top of your screen go back towards the middle recognizing that he would had no more sideline left to take up so he just went right back to the middle of the field and got to an open spot that the ball gets squeezed in there so the Raiders get 14 yards on that play it's first down [Music] [Applause] spit a hard yard my new ski makes the tackle menisci replaced the injured knee Lanka wits this is only his third start second year veteran out of Colgate [Applause] so it'll be second down in seven at the 34 [Applause] both of the white house [Applause] 38-yard line not enough for the first down [Applause] let down by Todd Bowles and Kurt Gouveia now one of the things that both Jackson will try to do a lot of times when a defense is trying to break it back that is go back to the other side when he started to those to the right maybe I'll try to break to the left but in the situation against the Redskins you know that their defense stays at home in the backside here bow is just gonna take it all the way to the right side get some good blocking up front that's when they should have cut it up feel right there try to string it out to that sideline and that's really not the place to be because that's the other gosh [Music] boy line is Smith push down and then some up there good feel yes today I max it out command trail to play all the way and Steve Smith made his move to the outside the mayor was about two yards behind the lead already nice little touch there by Steve Beuerlein to get it in there because that's a tough pass to throw in here when you're running back is closing in on that sideline you have a really tough angle and Berlant did a nice job of getting it in there and Smith made a nice run on the play after he caught the ball I think we should mention also that mati Coleman has a sore hamstring and most likely would have been out there they lie about recovering that play go bastok goes instead and Smith makes the completion this would be the last play of the first quarter in play line [Applause] Brian Davis now they played this season in the National Football League I guarantee in about three or four Willie golf has not been covered deep finally the Raiders [Music] now rate is going to go back to that vertical stretching Brian day he's gonna be working one-on-one he's gonna get very comfortable will he go cuz you can't see him all day there you see him just kind of getting in the back of Galt he's trying to pull up a little bit but Willie acts a little bit we said he wanted to be a thespian he acted a little bit on that plane just kind of pulled back and got the flag thrown for himself got their feet tangled up he never looked back for the ball Brian Davis the cornerback for the Washington Redskins told us yesterday he wasn't really all that experience at football because he he really just got into it in college in here you see a little bit of that inexperience if he looked back for that football maybe he wouldn't have gotten the flag thrown on him but he really was beaten by Willie Gault had a good enough speed though to stay up there with him he runs up for to Willie probably runs about a 4-1 40 39 yard penalty so its first down Raiders at the 11th Burleigh 9 for 11 105 yards of two touchdowns time of possession Washington had the ball only four minutes in the first 15 minutes LA almost 11 Walcott Berlin to the right side [Applause] it's a couple of tough yards before Alvin Walton makes the tackle interesting thing here those the Raiders are trying to run the ball down here near the goal line when they get into that red zone now are you gonna see a steeper line maybe try to feather that ball up in 30 end zone again art Shelley youngest coach in the National Football League told us the other day he said I want to establish that power game again that big rate of Russian game that we used to have so much when he was there along with Gene Upshaw and Dave Dalby and all of those guys a lot of them who were in the Hall of Fame right now second down and eight at the nine Jackson in smoke go to set box incomplete it was intended on the quick in pattern a Willie gold but Brian Davis that time had excellent coverage [Applause] we're on a play like that now with Willie Gault going to the post now maybe you get a little post corner either one of those wide receivers where you suddenly have the defense thinking post route now you're running give out good head faking and head back out to the corner of the end zone and again trying to let the quarterback just dump it off in there it covers by Davis that time the Redskins have to get Burrell on out of his rhythm somehow right now is extremely hot and it's tough to do it because he's taking short drops he's not dropping back deep to get the ball down deep to his receivers daddy overthrown intended for his tight end dial Todd Bowles only coverage that time [Applause] McDonnell was open on the play and when Steve Beuerlein that's the thing that you have to learn after a while as a young quarterback is when to read this thing and throw it right now and he sets back there you see he's not really set just kind of lets it go up in there and dials got to run a little bit further deeper into that endzone to get was quarterback a chance to just pinch it in through the back of the end zone that's what I was talking about taking him out of his rhythm that time Marshall and man came in and made him throw before he was set Jagger to attempt a 27-yard field goal he's got two misses this year inside for the lord but he gets this one from 27 so with 1403 remaining in the half the Raiders pick up three more and lead 17 to 7 [Music] now look at Al Davis there again you know he said he wanted to go back to power explosions of course sitting right alongside of them is Jim Otto the great Center for the for the Raiders talk to Al just before the game but he said you know he had a real good feeling about dart shell when he made him the head coach of this [Applause] Jackson he hit the 15 there are flags down but Ethan Horton came down in his Lane and really nailed him ether boarding a former number 30 garden returned half the distance of the goal first time Ethan Horton is a former number one draft choice in the Kansas City Chiefs at 85 picked him up after he got released and made him in a tight in and he's really done a good job for the Raiders here especially on special teams you'll see him now in some passive situations as well that's the fourth penalty against Washington already in this game we've got 13 54 remaining in the half if you're just joining us more than Fernandez with two touchdown catches for LA Joe Howard had a 99 yard kickoff return and gypped Jagger just after the 27-yard field goal and were at 17 to 7 with 13 54 remaining [Applause] this is Jamie Morris on first down and he's going to lose yardage excellent penetration by Greg Townsend and he got help from Mike harden has plenty of time to fight on second down and long fighter [Applause] he's nearby my closure nice solid play action about by mark Ripon there really sets that defense up holds the linebackers does that chasing after those running backs they see that play action they automatically stop and they don't get into the coverage that they should be in and that's what we mean by holing that action a little bit with play action because they think it's a run instead of a pass Washington's offense has really been out of sync the Redskins three plays in pot on their first three possessions and Rickon just in his first pass of the day he's now 1 for 8 Sanders to the 37 to the 30 borders a flag knocked out by lino Washington Athena 52 and a rip put that one right there see how easy it is to behind your rhythm buzzer takes his big plays [Applause] face mask and the 4500 defense five yards push down and he's a 10-year veteran Rupert now gets good protection upfront from his offensive line he's looking to the left all away he knows he's got his receiver down there deep but just unloads the ball directly Sanders he turns around actually has to wait a little bit for the for the football to be delivered now I can't I run the secondary though and he gets trapped in that sideline and watch the little facemask right there by my card one night it was an incidental contact for the face man on first down Boris gets brown and leaves his ground Tom Benson the leading tackler for the Raiders came through cleanly and made the stop and then you see to plan B guys number 79 Bob going to nose tackle and Benson 54 the linebacker both Plan B guys at the Raiders sign when those free agents were made available and certainly both of those guys have made the most out of this situation coming here to the Raiders they said that you know they kind of fit it in real well and thought that they might run into some resentment from the older Raiders here but everybody's just kind of made themselves at home particularly go akiza he wants to move out here [Music] Alessa five it'll be second and 15 for Washington if it's got problems now throws it incomplete intended for Sanders right now let's take you back to New York and Brent Musburger well 10 the leading scorer for the New York Jets Eric McMillan it is Craig with the fumble Sonny Bono not quarterbacking San Francisco stages you know I got the wrong Bono but you get the idea don't you Tim back the year hey Brad salutely and share was coming on the rush I was gonna ask Paris it was sure to come upon the rush we get the idea bread third down and 15 at the 34th eliminate Washington the fleet to mark inside the 15 to the 14 pick up 19 more of that one Art Monk written about a 15 yard stop along the sideline and you'll be on the left side of your screen rip rolls off that away sees monk stop right there long to sideline good coverage on the play by the way by the Raiders but that ball was just put it right in there nice nice protection up front for ripping as well had an opportunity to look downfield let his receivers develop a pattern down field watch the protection of the he's getting red towns is the only guy killer with any kind of a shot he got hit in there a little late but that was incidental and the 14 rip flows this one souta's Robinson no question they will be looking at this one upstairs where shortly we're gonna get a look at it as well here is from the endzone blaze made by how a long ago he put all the pressure up on Ripon well and down down further downfield here you see Lionel Washington trying to trap that ball and he did not have possession of that ball when he went down to the ground here's another look at it and that one is really tough to see but you can see that ball hitting the ground before he has control of it just got a hit down and he settled on top of it it'll be second down at Terre [Applause] whippin underneath the biner and the playas flag dead before Ripa can release the ball [Applause] one stone number 85 on the offense 85 is Donnie Warren you're rocking a little because you understand the speed that you're dealing with over there and have radar defensive line you got to settle in there especially when you get down here in the red zone you want to settle down and make sure to make those kinds of mental mistakes and binder was opening big penalty for Washington 67 yards and that'll drive that man nuts [Applause] but by wine on the deflection to the 15-yard what a play the ball is batted why's they warned very wisely grabbed it one-handed who carried it to the 15-yard line way to complete the comeback for Donnie Warren at time Mike Wise has stayed along the line of scrimmage he's about six eight or six nine and why should just reach up and slap the ball down here and as Ripon passes right they just kind of slap sit back and Don Warren it's very pret as a good presence there picks up the ball and takes off and makes a couple of yards on the play that's heads-up football literally and figuratively six catch of the year for warrants catch of the year go down this is Biden as a blocker to the 15 [Music] [Applause] Gregg Townsend made the recovery Eddie Anderson knocked it loose and here the ball comes is just as you see Piner going down the helmet gets on the ball knocks it loose - simply loses the ball right there [Applause] 9 minutes and 57 seconds remain in the half and this tells the story bad hands by Washington they've lost 10 fumbles this year and many of those were critical Gerald rigs with a couple of critical fumbles against the Giants in the very first game Monday Night Football inside the 20 rippen's been sacked seven times fumbled seven times and again the Redskins were threatening against the Raiders here and that's on his biner who drops the ball inside the 10 first down Raiders [Applause] bo Jackson struggles ahead good defense by the Redskins Caldwell got their first Tim Brant along with Dan jiggetts with you on a glorious afternoon in sunny Southern California the LA Coliseum Mervin Fernandez started things quickly in the first quarter with two touchdown catches for the Raiders Joe Howard ran back at kickoff 99 yards for Washington and then Jeff Jagger with the 27-yard field goal in the second quarter to make it 17 to 7 we now have 9:25 debating in the half [Applause] lols kalfa Berlin but there's another flag [Applause] I couldn't tell if he was intended for gold for Jackson but the penalties against LA I think was actually holding on the offensive line of the Raiders [Applause] [Music] geese ik is the guilty party that last drive the Redskins drove 82 yards held the ball over four minutes and came away with absolutely nothing that works you know you get a holding pin latest such as Isaac just got there the good thing about having a head coach that was a former offensive lineman like a art shell is he understands when you get those calls you don't get those those those glaring eyes from them four wide receivers for la six defensive backs for Washington on third down and eight at the 12 Berlin has a man wide open it's built to the 37 yard line will he go a gain of 25 his rate of wide receivers run all of their routes at least 20 yards you got guys like Willie go no it takes him about 2 or 3 seconds to get down there here Beuerlein good protection upfront gone trusty out pattern in about 20 yards and the defendant Brian Davis just can't keep up whether misses a tackle there Gump makes a little inside move to try to escape but he gets caught later on but you know these Raiders you look at the averages of these wide receivers they're all averaging over 20 yards per catch golf Dan Fernandez that's his 12th catch of the year and it's first down at the 37 play action Bulldogs compete as a man wide [Applause] Galt's mine now if you drop the pass like that we just figure that maybe just keep running up the ramp and going through the locker room because you don't want to go back to the huddle and have to face your guys you see how they was shaking his head and disgust there cuz that's six points for the Raiders if Willie just holds on to it he's gonna be on the left side of your screen very nice touched by speed Berlin here goes beep that's one of the things the Raiders really like about him is his ability to get the football downfield got wide open has about five yards on the defender that stop balls and just simply beats him downfield and drops the football second down to 10 Raiders kids come with the bits [Applause] Darryl grant and Charles Mann take Jackson down for a lawsuit - let's go back to New York here's Brett Musburger Brett all right Tim I got it now it is Steve bono no relation to Sonny and here's his first touchdown pitch ever in the NFL and no it's not Cher it's Jerry Rice 45 yards nine signe of the season back to tip all right Brett third down and 11 I don't think we can let him forget that one Tim he doesn't make many mistakes I'll tell you that [Music] down and 11 at the 36 for bowling [Music] let's kids are comin [Applause] Alexander was open and Beuerlein through behind him Wilbur Marshall was coming hard Wilbur Marshall came on the Blitz outside on tucks watch him coming here just come right through the back side of Steve Beuerlein Beuerlein really doesn't see him but Wilbur's come you see that back that Steve Smith go up inside and blocked Todd Bowles so nobody's left there to block Wilbur Marshall and he unloads on Steve Beuerlein so Gossett comes on to punt it away for the Raiders jail power to the Redskins standing at his old 25 it's a wobbly kick that won't turn over this is Howard by the way these special teams [Applause] a 38-yard punt no return the tackle made by a manual King [Applause] [Music] Berlin and Mervyn Fernandez kept hooking up early in the ballgame Fernandez with two touchdown catches Joe Howard with the longest kickoff return for a touchdown in history and Gerald Riggs is not played so with 709 remaining in the half it's 17 to 7 the la arena traders attempt what the Redskins really have to do now to get back in this ball games they have to get mark rip and thrown on rhythm again like he did last week maybe those short 10 and 15 yard passes getting it off to those wide receivers and establishing that short passing day which sometimes we thought being just like a long running day [Applause] tickets ago it is [Applause] and Clark was just hammered lino Washington Kane had just put his helmet between the eight in the Ford took Clark right to the ground things as we were talking before by getting back to that rhythm Massey game is the Raiders secondary understands that that's where Washington's gonna try to do and so they're gonna tighten up they're playing that tough man to man up front so just jamming those receivers as soon as they come off the ball 82 guards they held it for a month no points wieder doesn't get back to the line of scrimmage Bob Dole gets it in jams everything up from his nose tackle position and just stops earnest Byner in the backfield if you got to try to run a draw you got to get those defensive linemen to commit one way or the other if the nose tackle or any of those defensive tackles plays off your block and strings it down the line of scrimmage you get big problems and certainly that's what happened that time to the Redskins now a long comes back into the ballgame Tom Benson also will get credit for that last tackle as well he was in on the assist he's the leading tackler [Applause] third down and 11 here for the Redskins with incomplete it was intended for finer and broken up by Russell Carter Russell thought another one of those ladies Phenix way up they told me today that he said there's no question I'm ready now it's gotta go whew so the quest racing continues for Washington both Shaco the punk and Bobby join that standing at his own 35 this part of [Applause] the 49-yard line so a 24 yard punt he just had a 73 yarder his last time out but shanks this one [Applause] Booth's our ladies at the 48 to a four foot box a shank oh great field position for LA this is bo Jackson turns and drives his way to the 42 yard line about that ability to break the ball back a little bit though Tibby has good vision when he's going through a hole to see a little bit of something on the backside and make that move very quickly commits to it very quickly and that's what good running backs do and as he plays more this season he gets out of his baseball mode and more to his football mode you'll see him doing a lot more of that second down in three Raiders George Brett up in the booth list we're gonna talk to him in a few minutes I want to find out if Bo changes his personality you're the end of the season when he starts thinking ahead to football great penetration by Alvin Walton Alvin Walton simply came up to the line rivers read the play right now just get the guy right in and got the Steve Smith's legs before he could turn the corner leading tackler for the Redskins they're leading tacklers come out of that secondary the second leading tackler is Todd Bowles yeah I prefer to have my leading tacklers coming the defensive line and linebackers I don't want my safeties leading the team in tackles because that means that's the last line of defense [Applause] residents come with six defensive backs well I don't throw down an eight as the ball batted up in the air incomplete Washington came with a lot of pressure from outside and in little clean and press thereby our Charles man got right in Steve Beuerlein space and just hit him right in the chest hisses he's trying to release the ball her line came up a lipid I'll go to of Charles Manson in the head like that Jeff Gossett see his numbers and he'll be kicking a Joe Howard next kids will like this one hit [Applause] Stephon Adams downed it after a 42-yard punt Joe Howard had no intentions of returning it he immediately look for a block tickets with you at the LA Coliseum George Brett has come into the booth George does bow change at all at the end of the year does he start getting into a mental aspect where he's ready to play football not really he talks baseball during baseball football during football I was talking to him yesterday their practice and he said what about some of the changes the Royals made and then all excited one of the coaches said hey Bo come on he said see you George wicked - monkey - the 12 yard line I want to know the trick of breaking those bats over his head I've seen guys break him over their knee but never over their head like you guys he's an amazing and you think it takes out of a guy physically to play - supports - professional sports like that I don't know many people that could do it in fact that was real surprised the way both came back after his first year playing football in the spring training next year I thought he'd be all bang you know start off real slow he started off real fast and spring training had a great [Applause] if Horace got it Bob Bullock are you surprised at the domination of the Oakland A's well it's like I was telling you earlier I knew how good they were and I really didn't know how good San Francisco was and San Francisco's pizza just wasn't there and Oakland was with the disaster up there everybody got a chance to set up the rotation the way they wanted and Oakland obviously with Mike Moore and and Dave Stewart Bluetooth pretty tough pitch recipe George thanks okay good luck to you have a good day George Brett what a great player he is three minutes and 45 seconds remaining it's 72 seven waiters and its third in one Washington [Applause] I want to tell you something Kent right here it was a key block up along that line of scrimmage somebody got hooked up on Howie long and flipped them on his back real nice blocking up front by the Washington Redskins so get that first down watch the blocky right up in here watch this part of the offensive line for the Redskins you got to see how a long number 75 get put right on his back right there that's good block get a little help from Richard Branson number 29 coming out of the backfield without great blocking up front minutes to play of course first down the ball at the 16 boys tripped up again it's how a loan how he gives and how he takes away that time is working against mark may launch trying to string the play out to the sidelines how he cuts back inside throws him off with those strong arms he's got it just reaches back in and makes the stop how he long bob Golic scott davis playing a lot more aggressively and long out talking about for long in his career yeah he said you know we're now with our shell being here he feels the whole way that attitude is back now he wants to stick around for as long ago [Applause] for it which across the middle has the completion sandesh rags is packed there out to the 34-yard line [Applause] terry mcdaniel he's in the ballgame was the defender a gain of 18 we talked about the redskins warning to go to some of those crossing routes they felt that that was going to be the effective offense against the demand demand offense that you're going to see out of the raiders and the reason why is because it's very difficult you covered a guy man-to-man and he makes those sharp cuts inside it's tough to stay up with him we've got the two-minute warning first half the lead is 10 [Applause] by 10:00 and the Redskins have yet to find that strong rhythm both clubs have all their timeouts remaining you know I'm not so sure now if I were the Washington Redskins I wouldn't want to start testing downfield just to see what these corner backs of the Raiders are made of a little bit let's go to our vertical game and see if we can get the ball downfield as well whippin on first down drills this one incomplete broken up by lot on Washington number 48 little help back there as well as double coverage there on the receiver and when you get that in the secondary you say hey look now we don't have to work as hard Gary Clark's got to try to find an open spot between the both of us it's not going to happen when you have guys in the secondary that are used to playing so much bump and run and playing it by themselves without any deep help Clark tried to find the seam after a shaky start Griffin went over five now he's seven percent of team 112 yards second down and ten six defensive backs for the Raiders with time throws underneath sandesh to the 45-yard line what a great block though by Ernest Byner to come back and help Ricky Sanders on the play and that got about another five or six yards and more importantly got the receiver out of bounds to stop the clock good play there by buying it oh they come back and throw that block downfield now here's ripping pulls out he's gonna float a little bit to his right just a tad there but he's very nice in there settling in finds the receiver coming across now watch Spiner come back here right there that's the keep block at the end of the laws receiver eight to get more yardage and B to get out of bounds it stopped the clock with 146 remaining in the first half a gain of 11 third catch boo Sanders first down for the Redskins with it [Applause] those books it looks like these out [Applause] Mike Tyson I believe it was Jim Lachey but he just really crunched him you make those interceptions you want to make sure that you get your shots and let him notice not going to be a free ride when you make that interception we certainly hope that Jerry robsons not hurt seriously on the play he was playing underneath them a lot of times you'll see defects play man underneath him a little bit his own back he's right to Miller your screen now Ripon sees the receiver coming across but does not see that linebacker floating across the middle this is a 25 yard return by Robinson but then Lachey causes a fumble in Washington recovers and right here at the end is when the fumble comes cherry Robinson just gives up the ball there as he gets knocked out on the play it looks like Lachey may have even recovered the ball boy you call that a slobberknocker that's a hit and I watching he gets set up there I think by finer and Lachey just knocks him out and takes the ball away it's on the far side that feels a little difficult for us to see all the way over there if it is a long way from where we are but certainly Jim Lachey got in there and really just made a nice play they're still working on Robinson as you look at Jim Lachey so it's ruled a 25-yard return by Robinson a fumble and the fumble recovered by the Redskins timoshev and Robinson is up that appears to be at least in one piece once again here's a hint you're gonna see who Robinson gets set up by number 21 Ernest Byner right there and Lachey she's gonna come into the Timmy and lassie routine Oh to knock the ball loose and he just reaches down the book on the feeling just grabs the football and recovers it so he gets the hit and there a fumble recovery tell me at lassie you know one guy gets in behind and you push him over the other guy and his Jerry Robinson he's still trying to figure out if he's in LA County or is he back east wow what a hit we know Lachey says he's been in the weight room a lot where you can look those arms until they're blowing up a little bit since the time he came here came through Washington from San Diego take me shake some strength on that blood x-games at the 31 with a fabulous [Applause] [Music] on the on the sack fumbles the football again and watch on the left side he screen cuz that's where some of that pressure is going to be covered from right there rip and tries to get out of course that's where towns he came from that left side came inside it had caused the fumble by mark ripping and this recovered by the Raiders how a long number 75 so the problem continues Griffin came into this game with seven sacks seven thunders he's been sacked twice today and he fumbles this time every baby to the half pushed down hello [Applause] it's going for it all in saqqaq Davis at the goal line he's got a run now Davis goes out-of-bounds at the 14 plays and the ball has been turned over three consecutive times lack of concentration on the part of Steve Beuerlein it I mentioned earlier in the game that he has a problem when he gets inside the 20 and recognizing the severity of situation taking advantage of it and here he just simply floats the ball up in the endzone Brian Davis almost has to call for a fair catch down in the end zone because he can't believe the balls coming to him Berlin has time to unload the ball you see him there he's fairly comfortable back in that pocket he just throws it up there and Davis catches the ball and can't quite figure out whether or not he wants to take it out of the end zone or not he's he's impressed by man late but that comes late the ball is already about 20 yards downfield and that was just a nice interception by Davis out there in the end zone bring the ball once you took that step out kids say was a pepper this thing that brought him back in convention Redskins may just melt the clock here as we approach the 1 minute mark I'd look like hockey with all those turnovers four turnovers on three consecutive play so you figure the fumble you pass the fumble by ripping the fumble of first by Robinson then the pass interception the Raiders take a timeout and it's gonna be a short timeout with 101 in the hammer [Music] four turnovers a three consecutive blows Lipton on the screen the fighter I noticed his way [Applause] and the Redskins immediately take a timeout when you get that much yardage on a play like a screen play now you say hey maybe we can get down a field goal territory suddenly while you're willing to run the clock out just run a little screen and see what you could get now you're stuck they can attack and get down there and get a field goal out of this thing quite possibly a gain of 22 yards 48 seconds remain in the half [Applause] Washington with two timeouts remaining the Raiders with one but I doubt if the Raiders will need that one well the good thing for the for the Redskins is they understand where those sidelines are working those slanting patterns and getting to that out of bounds because that's part of the main part of their passing game is working those slanting patters now you have to work it to the outer bounds to stop the clock you can do that about two or three times and work your way down field in the last minute and a half it has been wild I can't remember that many turnovers in that sort of span and the best hit of the day had to be by Lachey or Robinson yeah he could very well get the defensive player of the game run and work for the Washington Redskins push down rates kids [Applause] intended for bunk but he was pushed out by Terry McKay and so one of the assistant coaches for the Raiders got knocked down on the play and got back up and threw his hands up in the air he's pretty proud that he took a shot Redskins got off the bus yesterday talking about how important this game is as you look at the NFC East they're four and three two losses to the Giants one to Philadelphia albeit by 11 points total those three losses and the rate is three and four over the middle pushed down Washington complete the Sanders you see the clock now under 35 seconds and there is a penalty flag the defense will leave those kinds of routes open for the offense and the main reason why is just kills the clock facemask penalty there well what the defense will do is they will let you have anything in the middle that feel as long as it's not twenty or thirty yards but they will not they will try to prevent you from getting to the sideline certainly that's what's on the Raiders defensive minds now to the 41 the clock at 28th and Washington takes another timeout so the Redskins have one timeout remaining certainly this man has done a good job with his club the Washington Redskins Joe Gibbs you know we talked to him yesterday he said at some point another he may think about going back and coaching young people really gets a lot of enjoyment out of the kids and and at some point in his career he may want to go back and do that however I don't think it's gonna be this year two Super Bowl wins you saw there and a whole bunch of NFC Championship shows the middle Clark to the 33-yard line Washington hurry up offense still has one timeout remaining they run the clock play with ten seconds remaining Tim in reality Washington needs about ten more yards to get me a comfortable field goal range and I'm sure that's what Mark grip and is thinking now if I can get another one those little uh those slant routes in there and maybe get ten yards out of it to get him put put chip Miller and globe Miller in a good position to kick the field goal low Miller 15 of 17 this year at field goals again as long as was 48 yards ranked second in the NFC and kicking is looking Joe Gibbs 10 seconds remain [Applause] set you down in tender Washington [Applause] to the 26-yard line and the Redskins take a timeout with three centers reading and that will bring on low biller barbers dissenter mochiko is the holder and low Miller's the kicker a 43-yard attempt three seconds remain in the half the Raiders lead by ten pick is long enough that it's good so that's the end of the first half with the score Los Angeles 17 Washington 10 [Music] Marcus Allen I saw him before the game says hey make sure you mentioned my name would you I don't think anybody needs to know that Marcus Allen is up still up the Raiders though well you know there are only five players on the Raider squad who played in Super Bowl 88 against one long Mikkel James Townsend at Bo's ball low Miller's kick to start the second half mistake about Bobby Jo Edna [Applause] and that's where la will have the ball to start things off the tackle was made by Terry or of 20-yard return if you look at some of the school is around the National Football League and Terry or made a nice special teams play there played off of a block just went down and and cut Bobby Joe Edmonds and put them up in the air [Applause] it'll be first down la at the 21-yard line all set for the second half bo Jackson excuse with [Applause] Sode big game seven guards so Bo Jackson starts off quickly in the second half [Applause] Tracy rocker and Steve was new scaler mixed it up pretty good up on the front you know two young rookies working against each other watch him right here this is the area of concern as Steve was new sceetos yesterday he said I'm glad I'm finally getting the chance to play against the rookie another rookie that is he gets a nice block there he'll turn out you know here it is Friday afternoon here in Los Angeles Steve was new ski still in the way he's still lifting weights of trying to get better second down at four you had me today's product both jackson breaks it big punch down across me [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Raiders of the Sanwa they almost expect now to win football games to do things right and we talked earlier in the game about bo Jackson had the fact that he had gone over a hundred yards and fourteen games and I told you that the Washington Redskins by building regret to mentioning that today Jeff Jagger for the extra point 105 yards and a touchdown for Bo Jackson bo Jackson got a great block out of Steve Smith the school bag we talked earlier about knocks down Wilber March now bow explodes now gets away from a couple of tackles and now nobody's gonna catch him when he gets in the open you see Charles man down there he's trying to swat at him but forget it who knows how to run that's what get it [Music] about the only thing he doesn't know is how to play hockey not what bo diddley says [Music] what a way to start the second half [Music] that's the second 100-yard game in his career the first in 14 games for it yeah you coming up off of that now there's the with and without bow file and of course it's 16 games that you look at the rushing place that the Raiders had without bow 443 and of course with him now 598 of course that clues last season as well passing plays have gone down the 570 with bow as opposed to 600 with [Music] [Applause] Bono's so Jeff Jagger comes on to kick off Joe Howard and AJ Johnson will be beat for the Redskins Howard has a 99 yarder today so [Applause] [Music] it's a I short kick powered at 16 [Applause] that was made by Steve strap and player out of Boston College will wait to see you the flag is and it's against Washington [Applause] [Music] and how difficult is it for players to adjust to the time difference and we'll get to that right after this receivers first down at ten that's a Reggie Branch I really think that it's tough if you're coming all the way from the East Coast you come out here [Music] on Sunday to get out of here maybe on a Friday evening get a practicing have a Saturday practice here they kind of acclimate yourself in fact three time zones or four time zones it's very difficult to detail well the reason I ask is you and I were joking about it after the the long flight the three-hour time difference also you shut the box back for later time rippen looks deep now throws the out pattern in the direct Gary Clark incomplete Mitchell turning the clocks back I can imagine those people at home now we're listening and realize just now that they forgot the third there's back that's it you forget in the spring you get an extra hours sleep in the fall you never forget that [Applause] it'll be second down and ten for Washington for Dallas of the Dallas Cowboys just can't seem to win a football game everybody thought that today was a day that maybe they could beat the Phoenix Cardinals and get on the get one in the win column they not bad case of the Opus Oh for 1989 on second down rippen [Applause] Wiki sanders has a first down for washington at the 22 and Lyndon Kings is simply number 52 for the Raiders just simply missed the tackle on that play really should have stopped the play for about a six yard gain and it ends up being a lot more than that 11-yard pickup six catch for Sanders tackle was made by Rickey Hundley and Sanders is shaken up Redskins came into this game as the top rated offense in the NFL but they are struggling now 1st down and 10 at the 22 straight ahead absolutely nothing again the defense closes it all down Rickey Hundley got there first and he got a lot of support from his teammates but one of the things that the Raiders do pretty well along their defensive line is the goal looking those guys up front they slide along that line of scrimmage very well use their hands extremely well so in the Hogs try to get off and block them one on one they're throwing them to the side and they're making a stop at the line of scrimmage and if you want to be effective against the rate of defense what you got to do is hook up on them and get them off the line of scrimmage let's see if the Hogs can do that now [Applause] rip it on second down and nine buddy out throws incomplete he had to unload it quickly because Benson was coming and he had a lot of help back there with Golic and how he loaned Benson likes to loves to come after the passer as a linebacker net and when you send a linebacker a lot of times what happens is if you run a twist and complement that with blitzing a linebacker one of those offensive linemen will not see that line back and as a result he gets a free shot of your quarterback because he's hidden by those two guys running the twist routes running those stunts upfront with a cross third down and nine [Applause] again his backside pressure balls loose and Mark Gripen fumbles the ball as he gets sacked and this time it was for the pencil [Music] hit from the front side this time as he's turnaround he could see the Russia coming in his face and he just simply [Applause] Scott Davis recovers the fumble apply the pressure Davis that once the first comes from Townsend he's right up here comes right in that and he's a hard up feel rusher anyway you know if you're blocking against Greg Townsend he got to get arm extension has Joe Jacoby just lets him beat him on the corner and he gets a clean shot on Margaret River actually did not see him because he was looking downfield trying to react downfield and get the ball away and Davis made the recovery it is frustrating for the Redskins for the Raiders first out in Ted at the 14 [Applause] Raiders Bank straight ahead Smith gets a couple of tough yards 10 when you think about the Redskins turning over the football down here in their red zone now see that's when a turnover really does a lot of damage to you because if you're down on your own 20 then that team has to work you know the defense or the offensive the other team has to work 80 yards to get the score here they only got to go 20 yards to get a touchdown they kick a field goal right now and get the three points that's what it really really hurts you on those turnovers because you've given up easy seven points in a lot of situations second down and seven at the 11 [Applause] hitched to the right side throws in that direction incomplete intended for Bo Jackson [Music] Ravin Kowal had Bo Jackson covered that play that's good coverage by call well all the way to the end zone good protection for Burleigh now watch this coverage here bye you see call well write that the bottom of your screen he had boat covered all the way Bokan to cut that one if he to run out of bounds and set in the first row seats or if you're ripping you have to start thinking about what's taking place three sacks two fumbles today we mentioned it to him yesterday and he said I'm using you guys are gonna bring that up he said you know what happens is a lot of time they come from the back side I just don't see the rush from the front side hope did not bring it up incomplete berry will burn on dirt Manny Fernandez and Riverbend Fernandez and Reina fans want a pass interference play there without good coverage thereby will burn just played the ball all the way Fernandez tried to react back inside and watch left side of your screen you get to see Fernandez trying to reach back inside but will burns really in good position it turns around looks for the ball and Fernandez tries to react back to it and there's Berlin's reacts this rule change really affects a lot of people everybody says well gee that was past interference the key though is that those defensive backs react to that football and looked for the ball you can get away with mugging somebody his second of the game 27 to 10 Raiders jaegers kick this time takes powered back five yards into the endzone is go he's not going to get far he's down at the 10 let's take you to New York here's Brent well Tim the Philadelphia Eagles are manhandling the Denver Broncos great effort here by Jimmy Giles remember this game is being played out in Denver forty some degrees twenty-one seven now Philadelphia we're back to town and that Philadelphia game extremely important to Washington Raiders as well play action for ripken drills this one and Clark has it at the 33 yard line the critical point in the game I think for the Washington Redskins now is the time when you got to start making some positive moves because you drift along and you drift along in a game and suddenly you realize you're you know you're late in the fourth quarter but you've got to start attacking the defense now the making them establish yourself establish your offense and get down and get a touchdown because now if you let let it drift on and suddenly the Raiders are back on the field with the football your honor the ballgame a gain of 22 the third catch of the day for Clarke first down Washington at the 33 [Applause] written with the screen divider [Applause] and finer hit at the 37 by Lyndon King poor Lyndon King came up and got all hat that time on Bynum he took him to the sideline and and made him a part of the out of bounds marker lemon king with a great play there from his line back each position right watch it right down here at the N now watch - snap back as Lyndon King comes in here and delivers that shot that's what you want to see him from your line back she's coming there deliver that shot stop the running back from gaining yardage right here King closes in he's got a little help coming from inside on second down and six rip into Clark it's a block gets it to the 46 it couldn't keep his feet Lyndon King Tripti if you notice that uplifting spirit all of a sudden from the Redskins offense running those crossing patterns people getting active in the ballgame the Redskins are experienced enough to know when you get in that critical time in a ball game you have to start moving the ball and getting into action otherwise you might as well pack it up and get on the plane and go home crowds gotten very quiet here 937 remaining third period it's 2710 Raiders [Applause] on first down Afghan explai accident Ripton goes deep Jim they're gonna take a look at this play-doh because Eddie Anderson as he was intercepting the ball went to the ground I'm sure the officials gonna look if it was trapped you see Gibbs indicating that the ball hit the ground as any Anderson was leaning forward trying to make the interception there you see another look at he's right the Miller your screen number 33 Eddie Anderson for the Raiders they watched him float back that play that middle of very nicely there from his safety position he intercepts the ball here that pops up and the key is when he was going through the ground at that ball bouncing hit the ground before he could fully recover made a nice run got an escort there bye-bye Benson - made a nice run out of that thing returned it 20 yards if it stands it's Anderson's third interception of the year Joe Gibbs clearly thought the ball it hit the ground and they're reviewing it even as we speak replay official Gaylord Brian Eddie Anderson's the only guy in the Raiders who job is still on the Raiders from that replacement team of a couple of years ago yes and saying hey official the place stands first [Applause] [Music] first down Raiders at the 41 Raiders threatening the blog wide open [Applause] girl on down it looks like somebody rolled up on his ankle run that thing off but [Applause] Willie Gault makes a tough play down in the middle though cutting back at crossing a lot of people say that he's not willing to come back and make those tough catches let's see what's it it's long though a Steve Beuerlein appears to be an ankle that got rolled up on actually was holding his need and as you see Jay Schrader trade are ready to come in so he will face the Redskins a lot of speculation this past week in Washington [Applause] here's another look at what happened to the Steve Beuerlein them watches someone runs into his ankle or his knee there we're both it comes in late in it apparently as somebody from the middle of the Redskins defensive line it's about the best picture we've got to show you on that dance summon the Redskins front office believe that starting Beuerlein today was an admission that last September's trader for Jim Lachey deal was a steal 857 remaining third period they continue to work on the knee of Steve Beuerlein we understand it's a nice train leaves the game 11 420 to 154 yards two touchdowns an interception Jay Schrader comes into the ballgame [Applause] first out of the nineteen Raiders [Applause] bo Jackson gets a tough yard maybe right now let's take you back to our New York studio and Brent Musburger Brett Tim we've got a good late-game brewing out in Denver Philadelphia up 21-7 and then John Elway throws a touchdown pass great catch by Vance Johnson and they're getting close to the fourth quarter out there it's 21 14 Eagles let's send it back to ten all right Brett 8:14 to go third period here in Los Angeles Tim Brant along with Dan jackets for the Raiders [Applause] Schrader's pass [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's the same problem that chase traitors been having all along with the waiters [Applause] it takes another step keeps looking downfield you know what Steve Beuerlein was doing where they're a this is what they want you sit back there you deliver the football you make this strike in there you know danced around in the pocket to put your offensive line than some kind of a sweater prize it'll bring up third down and ten for the Raiders that's which is down here he's just gotta settle down on the pocket and be committed to the passing game to sit down there I think it's lumped when they're gonna come Schrader's doesn't set throws and completely [Music] [Applause] you see that's a typical Jase trader thing this year the song slipped back there in the pocket not even get set up to simply throw the football to the corner of the endzone that does your offense no good when you do that you're not helping yourself and you're not helping your office and just throw the ball away like that sitting there you gonna take the shot that's what they pay you for and they'll one of those one of those wide receivers in the end zone will he go Jeff Chang er come back going a 37 yard attempt this time he's already hit to 26 and 29 plenty of distance [Applause] so with 742 remaining in the third period it's Raiders big jimp ran along with Dan Jensen when you look at this you have to say can the Redskins get back in it they have had no running game and it's a very consistent passing I think one of the things the Redskins gonna have to do now is change the velocity a little bit and start stretching the defense of the Raiders trying to go deep call for critical measures jaegers kick is a short one but it rolls into the end zone and AJ Johnson will down it for the touchback [Applause] Jim you know earlier I was talking about Jay Schrader and how he has to settle down in the pocket that watching this playoffs the last one we saw he never stops dropping back never squares up his shoulders he just simply drops back and floats the ball up and throws it away at some point in another your quarterbacks got to stop playing his feet and rifle that ball downfield not just floated up there trying to get off the field for Washington Stan Humphries comes into the ballgame from walk Brooklyn he has struggled Asaf today first down at the 20 [Applause] to 27 yard line and Morris [Applause] we'll be about two and a half three yards side of the first down tackle made by Scott Davis and Rickey Hundley an effort to get things moving in another direction Stan Humphries is in the ball game the gun Stan Joe gives reasoning he says hey if rip doesn't have today he can't be afraid to go to your second guy and trying to get something generated that's his first completion in the National Football League nice way to start the second down and this play is whistled dead almost immediately once again oh it start right fire on the offense don't second out once again it's Holi long causing all of those problems up front talk to Howard the other day about how fast he's getting off the line of scrimmage he says hey look it really isn't any secret if you're getting to be near 100 percent healthy you can play that people don't have to ask you Jesus it's just the fact that you don't want to play or whatever he said I'm not I wasn't physically ready to play and now I'm getting back to that point where I'm getting back to my old form he can get off the line of scrimmage on me I'm sure how I long had a lot to do with that but how about a new quarterback new snap count go away vii penalty for Washington it'll be second down in 6224 [Applause] inside the 20 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is second interception a return of 45 so Jamison [Music] some appeal or invasion same kind of thing you did on that play to get a second interception of the day they won't count there's a flag down play was whistled dead [Applause] [Music] start number 60 on the offense [Applause] I guess you'd have to say that art shell has restored the Raider tradition you know I'll say I was in their locker room before the game unusually produced along in the locker room before the game number one but they kind of welcomed you into that Raider locker room and you go in and the music's playing and everybody's standing around talking and having a great time and that's the part of that array of tradition that's the way it was when they were in Oakland Marcel said if he could fall asleep in his locker before game he knew it was ready he was relaxed he still is an extra point is good he can afford to be relaxed now it leads 37 to 10 Jagger to kick off again to Howard Johnson this is Jill Howard [Applause] to the 27-yard line but there's another flag a return of 20 yards Ethan Horton made the tackle Redskins have six turnovers in this game all three in this half have led to Los Angeles scores two field goals and a touchdown as you can probably tell the penalties against the Redskins as well [Applause] not like that one bit he says we have to play above ourselves to win any games first down Redskins and Ripon back in the ball game has a completion to his tight end Donnie Warren [Applause] second down ripping again throws past the completion nice move out on the corner it will be close to another rich skinned first down but catch was made by Ricky Sanders next Saturday are college football coverage will take you out to Boulder Colorado for a pretty good matchup between Nebraska pepper Colorado [Applause] Clark has the catch at the 35 across midfield to the 44 yard line see this is the area of the game where if you're on the Raiders sideline you'd say now guys let's not go to sleep on this thing because you're messed around and let these Redskins get back into and all of a sudden we'll come down late in the fourth quarter and have a real game on our hands a gain of 35 [Applause] puts the ball on the ground but recovers his own fumble gains about eight Scott Davis will get credit for that tackle mine is in a little yoyo deal there bounce it on the ground and just scoop you right back up four minutes and 40 seconds remain in the third quarter beep in the direction of Sanders but it was overthrown and then a couple of interceptions six turnovers three here in the second half and it's 37 to 10 trouble with the tunnelers all year [Applause] Sanders to the 27 yard line sandesh came across in motion and rippen's just simply follow them out there rolled out to that corner just dumped it off the sand is underneath nice nice conception on that play justly Sanders right here coming along and motion he's just got a slide out and go straight to the sideline and watch rip and roll out and almost follow him down there you see that the guide is trying to cover him it's coming all the way over from the other side of the field when you're running man-to-man mcdhh and a Terry McDaniels either come all the way across the field try to follow him plus he's got a goes to the corner bumps open but he's overthrown second out of ten [Applause] wait defensive play bailando Washington working on monkey down at ten [Applause] Griffin has Clarke wide open touchdown Washington [Applause] and again they were working on zeppole [Applause] simply being the likely suspect back there because he's the most recent addition to the to the secondary of the Raiders came in as a running back and and yet working against Garrett Clark and you are a former running back you better learn how to play some man-to-man coverage and get your hands on them at the line of scrimmage Clark six catch of the afternoon 27 yard strike that time low boiler on for the extra point and it's good blue-nose kicked his loose that's a live football and I think the Raiders got it back bounced right off his zeppoles chest as he was trying to catch the ball just pop right off his chest and went back up in the air definitely being number 44 the Raiders it's been having a tough tough tough go at the last tooth ways just keeping a touchdown in messes up the kickoff return there is still plenty of time in this ballgame 349 remain third period it's 3717 Raiders Rickey Hundley was the guy that covered up that fumble and got it back for the Raiders J Schrader the quarterback replacing Steve Beuerlein who had a fine day but went out with a nice train most down at the 28 defense rises to the occasion Porter taken down quickly team shoe but it's four years for the Fox incomplete Bo Jackson had it dropped it [Applause] incomplete his ability to sit back in the pocket before the football feels like a baseball on your shoulder River separated Gossett's punt is a high spiral er how it will go all the way back to the 25 and look for a wall balls loose waiters [Applause] Harry Porter appears to be the guy number 31 for the Raiders that recovered the football and Howard is still down on the ground more disappointed than anything else Ethan Horton made the hit to knock it loose I was trying to make something happen up in the air something positive and just gets wrapped up there by about three or four players and he's on his back the ball comes out now he's not officially down so that ball rolls out before he gets down to the ground let's get this angle on it and make sure that he indeed was not down to the ground before that ball popped down see him diving going back there backwards and the ball is stripped out by incan you know the ground can't cause a bubble that's right but see he turned he was on his back he's falling backwards so apparently that's when the ball came out he was just sitting on his chest they're gonna review it as well they should J Schrader oh four four [Applause] intercepted very [Applause] evolved from mr. taglioti I hope so is going deep in the direction of monkey and it's incomplete knockdown by Lionel Washington [Applause] what gets out about the 27 yard line Tom Benson was the guy who chased him out receiver though trying to talk about first down rippen goes to monkeys open can't hold on [Applause] working on gently are they gonna call pass interference against lead zeppoles had a tough day on the freeway he has but he's going against the NFL's best so the ball moves out to the 46 yard line of Los Angeles first down in ten Griffin with time throws it across the middle it's intercepted by Benson midfield to the 43-yard line pensee with the interception [Applause] the Hunley came over and tipped the ball up and that sets up the interception I watched Hundley's gonna be right in the middle of your screen watch the linebackers here watch Hundley right over here and I watched him come across on the play and tip it up right there and that allows Benson to make the interception and Benson is very alert to pick that ball up and grab him now the Raiders had only six interceptions this year coming into the today's ballgame today they have for three against Rickman and one from Humphrey [Applause] left side [Applause] [Music] second down and 3 Schrader has yet to complete a pass [Applause] pushdown false answers banks is way to the 30-yard line back to that the fact that the team was talking about having a coach who's been through the NFL Wars enough Archelle was telling us a story about Marcus Allen as art gay but got up to give his first speech to the team he's telling some war stories about what it means to be a Raider and Marcus Allen Road rose up and put his hand up and said to a coach these are great stories can you hold onto somebody's don't tell us everything now save something kind of spaced them out during the season as time as time goes by and as the need arises don't use all your good material at once Sadie was getting goosebumps hair was standing on end [Applause] porter on second and seven gets one maybe two charles man made the tackle [Applause] and Los Angeles trying to melt the clock and they were not doing a very good job of that throughout the third period [Applause] so that's the end of the third stanza [Applause] with pressure as the completion first down Redskins Wiki Sanders at the 48-yard line [Applause] we do Santa's rain that curl right and there gets in front of the defensive back settle down settles down and and makes a nice catch critical catch for the it was it Drexler's Clark incomplete Oh any points wicked across midfield to the 48 yard line Tom Benson makes the tackle Sanders will not have enough for the first gown he's at the 45 yard line zeppeli makes the stop later but it will bring up another fourth down situation for the Washington offense [Applause] down [Applause] got a hand on it and Washington will turn the ball over first it's easy to see why Washington trails by 20 they have 8 yards rushing 8 turnovers and Joe Riggs of course is not played yet we're still Gibbs told us yesterday he didn't think Riggs with plays got two sprained ankles did not practice bo Jackson big hole left side inside the 40 to the 37 yard line knocked out by Alvin Walton [Applause] this is Jackson again games two that's the hard way steve was new ski the offensive guard for the Raiders time allowed really made a key block and a key adjustment as he pulled out to go around the corner he recognized that Charles man number 71 for the for the Redskins was slicing through and just simply turn around stop pulled up and turn around and blocked him and took him out of the play completely we asked what's new ski the rookie out of penn state with the biggest adjustment for him has been turning pro he says well the biggest thing is we played so many games by now we would have been in a bowl game at Penn State [Applause] second down and eight [Applause] Oh Jackson loses two yards tackle made by Dexter Manley let's take you back to New York and Brent Musburger and it's bird down on 11 for Los Angeles Raiders yet to complete a pass has a man open its goal broken up nicely by Brian Davis Tony we get over 6 / 16 bruiser gossip on and drop Stephon Adams head the ball right there Gossett who was a quarterback in college through a nice pass but it was dropped working with the Chicago blitz and a good job work first down Redskins finer can't hold on second out of ten [Applause] across the field to the 47 yard line [Applause] got pressure from the outside besides to scramble and fumbles the ball and Washington gets it back there we go his pulse to keep moving down the field well Simmons came over and just clocked Tom Benson but that was a legal hit I believe it's again good pressure up front by the Raiders defensive line horses ripping it to run up in the pock and then try to run out of the pocket and Bill Patel is really the guy that causes it because he reaches in and just slaps the ball away Donnie Warren thinks that he's recovered the ball later show man coverage Rifkind steps up in the pocket goes for box got the completion at the 45-yard line Joe Jacobi the former right tackle who's playing on the left side now is called for holding Jacoby down from 330 pounds to 310 [Music] look at that 130 yards and penalties and that's wait a minute when you add that with the turnovers you're probably looking at taking away maybe about 2a through 200 to 250 200 to 250 yards of offense away from your club it brings up third down and 13 [Applause] the Clark clerk pushed out of bounds at the 43 yard line by zeppole he's on the sideline [Applause] a sack that he fumbles [Applause] a thousand big hit Oh has to happen with rippen is when he starts running with the ball or pulls up in that pocket he's got to tuck the ball away because he's just losing the ball too much when he gets sacked in lunch Townsend he's going to be coming for another up on the top side of your excuse me on the right side of your screen comes around the block there chases ripping out of the pocket right there just knocks that ball out now one of the things he's doing is he's coming deep in order to make these sacks so that means that your quarter guys had a step up inside and if he decides to run tuck that ball and get out of there that's the fifth sack on Ripon today he's been sacked twelve times this year and he's fumbled ten times [Applause] at the 37 balls loose and a Redskins get it back she makes the recovery we're trying to keep you updated on that Philadelphia Denver school because of Philadelphia winds that does help the Raiders very much alive for a wild card please a quarterback sucks this one away carries it up near midfield he'll be a yard short of the first down tackle made by terry mcdaniel belfry's was in the ball game earlier threw an interception ripping his throne three [Music] disconfirmation is another flag it's black day in Los Angeles and Sanders carries it down to the 44 under arts shelter new coach first down for Humphreys backside pressure [Applause] talk so much Tim about all those Raider linemen are running these uh these games up in front in that time they ran another game with with long covering around them watch the games being run up here the twist that's what we call up and how he launched him that comes around and chases the quarterback around the the back side of the play and makes the sack you see him run up front both sides now running these twists he comes long long around on that right offensive side and simply runs down Stan Humphries but that's what they donate getting a good pass rush with only four guys afford defensive lineman rushing the ball instead of seven loss of five second and 15 and the Raiders come flying across the line of scrimmage let's see if Holly can blame it on somebody again let's see if he's going to point [Applause] stick it down at ten Humphries and Clark can't hold on he was open and couldn't hold on to the ball team one interception this is going deep to Clarke and it's incomplete [Applause] clark's step down the bounds but I think they may be pass interference on the play too though because the officials down there saw a little contact down about the 10-yard line let's wait and see they ruled it incomplete they said he went out and come came back in we'll wait for the call from read Kashyap 823 remaining in the ball game is put down to 10 in Washington obviously was going for drops the ball outside correction Humphrey so he gets it back [Applause] nobody cool but the ball was knocked loose and I immediately thought of ripping well I think two might give you might have to give number 93 Townsend to Sachs on that plate because he sacked them the first time stripped the ball and then they came back in with a help of Bill Pakal got another sack on the play so maybe he did a double dip there [Applause] bo Jackson cuts against the grain breaks a tackle and has tripped up finally at the 45 yard line by Alvin Walton you know one of the things I'm kind of surprised at quite honestly rather for the rate of standpoint is that they don't have their other people in the game again just let them get some game time Express because certainly they've got things well in hand and now's an opportunity to get me a second or 13 people an opportunity to get in the game how prophetic it was by Joe Gibbs yesterday as we sat and chatted with him that he says you know Bo Jackson had hit his stride yet but it probably hit it tomorrow against us [Applause] Jaxson so long ago Joe [Applause] six penalty for Los Angeles today 17 carries 132 yards and a touchdown for Bo Jackson 3717 Raiders is set by Raven Paul will [Applause] to melt as much of the plate pop as he can doctor five [Music] [Applause] to the 46-yard line well he is speciality he really has you know the thing is I think he brings to the back feel of the Raiders is that explosion that guy that one guy yours need that can take it the distance on any given play he was held 279 yards on 20 carries last week by the Eagles but it came in here today and has just exploded you know and watching a guy like George Brett who is the booth with us before here's a great athlete great baseball player bred and yet when he talks about Bo Jackson he does it with such admiration almost like he's a fan of Bo's as so many people are second down and six the 46 this is Bo [Applause] it goes out of bounds at the 39 yard line bo Jackson man strikes up [Music] you know it's interesting to watch this Raider Club though having to drop down into despair over the last couple of years to see them coming back now with a new approach to new attitude and certainly it was very you could even taste that that that increasing in the in that desire to win when we came in here talking to players they tell us how excited they were to get back into this thing now that our shelves their head coach [Music] those guys are excited they're just kind of taking it easy that's the defense both got a kick out of that fan posted later saw clapping Nance Bueller breaks the tackle carries it down to the 35 [Applause] this is just a good old-fashioned liquid by the Raiders what a job he's done our shell came in here and took a bad situation and made it good we talked at length r2 about what we you know what he felt made him a a good individual and a good coach and he talked about the this family upbringing and how difficult times were but dad always provided for him in a good family situation and and he felt that those values really helped him along as he became a professional and now a head coach in the National Football League final helps the Raiders now they trail camper by only two games only John Madden's gotten off to a better start with the waiters he was free though this is Vance cooler pack code by Dexter Manley and I think it's interesting that our shell has yet to negotiate a new contract without Davis well when out made him head coach he made it specifically said that you know art there's no pressure on you I guess not cuz he hadn't given him the big deal except there's no pressure on you you just come in I want you to get this team back on squared in background Center and certainly art has done that said one of the first calls he got was from John Madden Manny as tremendous respect for it's third down and nine at the 38-yard line [Applause] traitor in trouble again has the completion his first to the game and it's to Smith boy there you go you're ready to pop that up there over eight huh now you can say Jase Reyes padding his stats this is a club without Marcus Allen and without that guy Tim Brown the Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame talked with him down on the playing field earlier today and he said I said yeah I'm not used to looking at the Raiders without you and Marcus Allen being out there so that goes half you material when you guys leave the field and he can't wait to get back in there and get active but he's still limping a great deal from the knee injury that is that [Music] don't block down to 337 mercifully fourth down and seven to 36 [Applause] NASA tries to pooch this one puts it up high it'll hit at the four there's a flag out and it's a touch back then they said when he grew up and went into the pros and he found himself going in and he got caught he says now I realize how very wrong it was first out in five finds his tight end Donnie Warren [Applause] Redskins they're the capital made by Tom Benson a gain of 22 and to get back to towns and they said you know when you you're in it you don't realize the impact that you have sometimes when young people watching it so now with this training he realized now he's got as a grown man complete in the direction of her despite her incomplete his brent musburger brett second attempt for Humphries Jimmy Johnson inside the 20 to the 15 yard line Johnson the rookie out of Howard has finally tackled by Mike Haines [Applause] comforts kathas offense in that hurry up they are taking a little bit too much time getting down field are suspected it should have been lined up already [Applause] complete the second placing sir look at the wild card applications later on receiving these games would be very important priest to Sanders touchdown [Applause] ganden sanders was working on zeppeli and Humphries through a strike said that Zeff Lee had a bad day at the freeway watch right in the middle of your screen Ricky Sanders is going to beat him right to the post and get the touchdown you see the Stan Humphries places that ball out nicely ji fades it back down low but the left to receive a run back and get underneath of it simply just cannot cover Ricky's heart zeppeli you might want to move back to offense that's the 12th catch of the afternoon for Sanders 15-yard touchdown Chapleau village comes off [Applause] and the extra point is good 37:24 Raiders with 154 remaining to see Doug Williams on the sidelines there he started throwing this weak defense against Park I talked to him earlier before the game he sent me to the back felt pretty good no pain at all and he's gonna take things a little slow and be careful with it but none I suspect that he may be pressed into service a little bit quicker than the first intended that's your sidesteps attack alert dances out to the forty for Joe Gibbs was saying that because Ripon was forced in there a little bit early people don't realize it takes several years to develop a good NFL quarterback hey you know one of my pleasures in Washington is getting up and taking the kids to school in the morning and listening to the mark rip and report he's on with the morning zoo guys at the morning and rip sings yeah he told us about he's very proud of the fact of these things I understand he doesn't sing that well whoa [Applause] stopped immediately by Mike Stensrud [Applause] [Music] friends of yours touch that one [Applause] second down at 10 Los Angeles and you just run the clock blood Washington can't stop it anymore so Washington will go to four four and a Raiders will up theirs from three in Florida four and four [Applause] under a minute to play this game is taking three hours and 50 minutes and I believe that's the longest of the year at 15 at the 37 [Applause] and that should be the last play of the game they can't stop it it's over have to feel for that guy he was frustrated and that guy is exalted he's won three of his four games as head coach of the Raiders he's given up new life he's brought back the old tradition and they're playing with new spirit and I asked him about his assistant coaches and whether or not any of them we're moving on he said he talked to all of them gave an opportunity if they wanted they hadn't felt uncomfortable with the situation ago and they agreed to stay and say hey look we think we can work this thing out and certainly they have they were the Los Angeles Raiders
