we call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray prompt our actions with your inspiration we pray o lord and further them with your constant help that all we do may always begin from you and by you be brought to completion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people today i have set before you life and prosperity death and doom if you obey the commandments of the lord your god which i enjoin on you today loving him and walking in his ways and keeping his commandments statues and decrees you will live and grow numbers and the lord your god will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy if however you turn away your hearts and will not listen but are led astray and adore and serve other gods i tell you now that you will certainly perish you will not have a long life on the land that you are crossing the jordan to enter and occupy i call heaven and earth today to witness against you i have set before you life and death the blessing and the curse choose life then that you and your descendants may live by loving the lord your god heeding his voice and holding fast to him for that will mean life for you a long life for you to live on the land that the lord swore he would give to your fathers abraham isaac and jacob the word of the lord blessed are they who hope in the lord blessed the men who follows not the counsel of the wicked no walks in the way of sinners no siths in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the lord and meditates on his law day and night blessed are they who hope in the he is like a tree planted near running water that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves never fade whatever he does prospers blessed are they who hope in the lord not so the wicked not so they are like shaft which the wind drives away for the lord watches over the way of the just but the way of the wicked vanishes blessed are they who hope in the lord praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory repent says the lord the kingdom of heaven is at hand praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised then he said to all if anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it what profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself the gospel of the lord our first reading from the book of deuteronomy we we see that the people are at a uh in a sense a a threshold you know crossing point where where is that where are they getting ready to cross into they may catch that the promised land right so the scripture says into the jordan which i was going to ask what is the jordan represe or across the jordan which is we call it that now the promise or they called it the promised land too but uh i'm not sure you know what they thought of it i mean they knew it was a real place but it certainly uh for us symbolizes a place that we're all headed to as well which we call now heaven right and so we're all on a journey and so very similar you know our our 40-day journey through lent is similar to the 40-year journey of the the people on the way to the promised land and it was a tough journey you know it was a lot of losing a lot of things that they thought they needed you know that they felt comfortable with in when they were bonded in in slavery in egypt the things that they had thought they needed but they really were enslaved to you know they thought they were enslaved to the egyptians but actually they were enslaved to these other things in addition right and that was what the lord wanted to set them free not just from uh the outward um oppressor but also the inward in pressure the one that oppressor the ones that that holds us bonded in our hearts and it is a striving certainly they had to strive to make it through and keep taking each step one step at a time those 40 years but it's not anything that they earned really it was a free gift offered by the lord and that's that's our journey through life is is that is that same way it is a striving but we have to be careful not to think that we're earning this promised land it's a choice we're being offered and i love it when um when the lord is so clear it doesn't mean it's easy but when it's clear it's helpful right so moses says i lay before you two choices it's yours to choose you know life or death eternal life by following god or the short-term things that seem to give you life but really really when you when you reflect on it you know they lead you to death right so it's it's helpful to have that have someone like moses who just laid out very clearly for us because sometimes we it's hard you know we get confused we get tired we get hungry we get all kinds of things right as humans different emotions so it's helpful to have the moments of clarity of choose life right and the encouragement as well the exhortation of moses says i encourage you you know here's life or death they're not equal choices i really encourage you to choose life really encourage you to choose life and so that's what we're doing during this season of lent is doing the best we can to yeah there's kind of rules for lent and there's things that we're focusing on there's three things we're focusing on which are prayer fasting and almsgiving right so and those are opportunities for us to in a sense be forced to look at that look at those three areas and say prayer well i'm going to choose be forced to but i'm going to help myself see that the way i spend my time when i spend time in worship towards electronics uh or sporting events or celebrities or entertainment when i'm forced to not spend time there and i spend a little more time and worship to god i hopefully can see which one is giving life and which one's not right and fasting food is good you know and we need it to live obviously but when we over indulge in it or or depend on it seem to be dependent we spent a day fasting like yesterday we see that you know i made it through actually okay you know you're all you're all here today right you all woke up this morning i don't actually need food to make it to the promised land i do need it to make it through this world too it's it's a tool to make it through this world so to speak right it's not a god it doesn't replace god in almsgiving you know uh we have opportunities to be uh the ways that god has gifted us with many things we be we become comfortable with them and dependent upon them and when we make the choice to give some of it away for no reason other than someone asked for it or someone needs it then we start to see i guess i didn't really miss that i guess i'm okay you know so those those the prayer fascinating almsgiving is not to make us like be down throughout you know that was the reading yesterday don't have sour faces and through the season of lent why not why is it not a time of being sour any ideas because we're headed somewhere where are we headed the promised land heaven right and we're maybe unsure when we're when we have to give up some of our time or some of our uh food or some of our uh treasure okay am i gonna be okay we're it's a is a step of faith but we're not sorrowful during lent uh we are sorrowful for our sins but we always transform sorrow because of god's great mercy it's quickly transformed to gratitude and joy because the free gift where we're headed right the lord is trying to help us accept the free gift it's a free gift we have to freely choose it choose life one of my favorite songs i like to whenever you know these the songs all the christian songs that that incorporate scripture are just such powerful ways to help us expand and remember these scriptures um choose life is a beautiful song by big tent revival um so i was listening to that this morning it's uh maybe some of you have heard it before it's a just the lyrics are so powerful and they're so uh exhorting and uh it makes you when you hear the song you just say yeah i'm gonna choose life right i'm gonna choose life so that i may live uh the choices are set before me living or dying blessing or cursing and i'm going to choose life so i encourage you if you get the chance to look it up on the internet and listen to the song it's choose life by big tent revival and then maybe listen to other songs that they've written they have some beautiful songs that will encourage you hopefully give you a blessing and encouragement as you begin your lenten journey and as we all get better and better at choosing life gathering together the needs of our community and the world let us bring them to our merciful father for pope francis bishops and priests may god continue to bless their ministries as they lead his flock let us pray to the lord for judges may the holy spirit grant them wisdom in making just decisions let us pray to the lord for all who feel unworthy of god's forgiveness may the lord open their hearts to the gift of mercy that he is eager to bestow let us pray to the lord for all the faithful especially for the intentions of anika and antoine diek for whom this mass is offered may christ the lamb lead us in a spirit of penance through this land let us pray to the lord for those who have died may jesus welcome them into the eternal joy of heaven let us pray to the lord also uh yesterday is ash wednesday is it's the you know what the three most attended days are in the year what are they christmas easter and ash wednesday you know it's a curious phenomenon i think it's not a day of obligation but it's a day of people feel moved definitely which is awesome that they come they freely choose to come right that's that's what we're that's what we're hoping for um you know we had a very yesterday morning we had pretty good turnout last night was the most we've had in this church since the beginning of the pandemic which is really awesome to see so i encouraged all those folks to keep coming and especially we have our wednesday night mass throughout lent the candlelight mass so if we could just pray a prayer for all those who came yesterday that they'll keep choosing life and all the ways the lord is calling them to so we pray that the holy spirit will guide them on their journey and all of us on our journey through lent and help us to keep choosing to to spend time with the lord let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer almighty and ever living god we humbly implore you to look with kindness upon the needs of your children we pray in the name of jesus christ our lord amen blessed you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we've received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it'll become our spiritual drink pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father regard with favor o lord we pray the offerings we set upon this sacred altar that bestowing on us your pardon our oblations may give honor to your name through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and paul our bishop and eusebio his auxiliary bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god so behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed create a pure heart for me o god renew a steadfast spirit within me let us pray having received the blessing of your heavenly gifts we humbly beseech you almighty god that they may always be for us a source both of pardon and of salvation through christ our lord oh saving victim open wide the gate of him to us below our foes press on from every side
