if you saw my last video you know that I am doing a three part series on daily 5 if you didn't get a chance to see the first video on daily 5 I will put a link to it at the end of this video the first video is all about how I manage my rotations and also working on writing so for this video I'm going to be talking about my favorite component of daily 5 which is word work if you stole my classroom tour video then you saw a little bit of how I organized my word work however since that video I have actually completely changed the way I organize my word work so what I'm going to do is I'm going to talk about how I used to have it organized how I have it organized now and why I made that change for the past two years I've had my word work activities organized in one of those rainbow ten drawer carts in the cart I had ten different word work activities that my students could choose from plus on top of the car I had magnetic letters and then next to the car I had keyboards as well what I really liked about that organization is that my students had 12 different choices that they could pick from so that way they weren't doing the same activity all the time and they weren't getting bored with it also what I really liked about that organization is that there was no prep on my part my students had everything they needed in the drawers and all they had to do was grab it out and they were ready to go however what I did not like about that organization is there were actually too many choices for my students a lot of them would just do the same activity over and over and over again and they weren't utilizing the different options I also have had an issue this year with my students playing around rather than actually doing the activities so I decided to limit their choices so now I'm going to show you how I'm currently organizing my work work activities the way I organize my students for daily fab I never have more than five students at word work at a time so I decided it would make more sense for me to have five bins each with a different activity so the students can just grab a bin and take it back to their seats so these are the bins that I'm using to organize my word work activities I do have five of them and I label them both on the front and on the side so what I really like about these containers is that they have this latch on the side so it helps keep it closed that way if it gets dropped I'm not going to have things flying everywhere so these things are in my Amazon store they are the Sterlite latch bins or latch boxes something like that and they're the 6.2 quart size now the ones that got have the teal latch on the side I don't know if they come in other colors or not that just is the color that I could find them in and I really liked it so they may come in other colors but I'm not entirely positive about that so I have five of these bins and like I said I did label them and I will put this label in my TPT store as a freebie so I had both the long label for the side and then I do have a smaller label on the front as well I did label the bands 1 through 5 so each student will be assigned a different number bin each time they go to word work how I communicate that with them is on my daily fabrication board which again I'll have that in the description as well if you want to check that out in my word work category I put their names and then I just put the number next to their name for the word work then that they're assigned to for that rotation so I'm going to actually go through each bin and show you what's inside and how I organize it so in each bin I actually have a paper that tells my students what they must do and then what they may do so all I did was print these out and laminate them and they stay in the bin all year long so for this one they must do rainbow roll first and then if they finish that and still have time they can pick any of these activities at the bottom so they can do letter beads they can use the sign language chart they can use the keyboards or they can draw a hidden picture like I said before I had a lot of students who are not completely finishing one activity before moving on to another one because there were just so many choices so by narrowing down what the students have to do first and then giving them choices afterwards I'm ensuring that the students are definitely doing at least one meaningful activity and that's their must do and then I give them just a couple options for their made do activities so each bin has a must-do activity these are in my TPT store this one is rainbow roll so basically the students roll a die and then the key will tell them what color to write their word now I only have spots for 14 words my students only have 10 regular words and then one bonus word apiece and I included a couple extra just in case I like to keep all the materials that students need for that word work activity in the bin so it's all in one place and ready to go so I do have a die in there now this is just a foam die from Dollar Tree the reason I like the foam die is a they're a little bit bigger so it's easier for students to keep track of and they don't lose them and has its foam it doesn't make nearly as much noise when students roll in I also have a pencil bag with markers now I personally prefer to use the thin markers for this activity because it just makes it easier for them to write under the may do for this word work then the first one was letter beads so all I did was take letter beads that I found that Walmart and I put them in this organizer this is from Dollar Tree and it was in the automotive section and then I cut up pipe cleaners so I really like this word work activity because it's super simple for students to use they just take their pipe cleaner and then they will string on their letters and I like it because the pipe cleaner makes it really easy for them to string on and then if the pipe cleaner gets bent up I can just replace it also under they may do was a sign language chart now I actually put this in all my word work bins because basically is one piece of paper and that's all I have to prep for it now these are mi TPT store I'll put the link to them down below but basically I printed out the black and white copy but I also have it with light skin tones and dark skin tones so I literally just printed it out on colored paper and I laminated it and the students use this as a key and they use it to spell out their words in sign language also under may do was keyboards so basically I put out a message on Facebook and I asked family and friends for old keyboards that they weren't using they mailed them to me all I did was cut off the cord and I keep them stored in a blue blocker bin that I got a big glass so you can see that in my classroom tour video now I love this as a word work activity for two reasons number one my students absolutely love it they kind of get to pretend they're like a secretary and it gives them a chance to practice their words number two I love it because it gives my students practice typing we don't have a lot of time to go to the computer lab and to get practice typing and when my students are in third grade they're going to be taking part testing on the computer so it's super super important that they know how to type well the last may do activity that I had was hidden picture basically the students just get white paper they draw a picture and then they hide their words inside of it a lot of my students don't really utilize this word work activity but some of them really enjoy it so I give it to them as an option so the actual word work activity that they must do in this case it was the rainbow roll I print off a ton of copies of these at the beginning of the year I keep them in a folder in the word work bin and then anytime it gets low my students know just to remind me and then I'll put new ones in there so again each one of my board work bins does have the paper that tells them what they must do and what they may do so this one there must do activity is Scrabble spelling and then there may do activities are Bananagrams sign language chart keyboards or hidden picture so Scrabble spelling again this is in my word work pack and it's in my TPT store the link to it is in the description basically they used a Scrabble key to figure out how many points their words are worth and over here they write the words and then they write a number sentence to show how many points now I really love this word work activity number one it takes them a really long time to finish and number two it's just a little bit of added back fluency practice as well and again I print off a ton of copies of those at the beginning of the year I keep them in a folder in the word work bin and any time it gets low my students just remind me and I will put more in you may have noticed that the may do activities were pretty much the same as the first bin so basically what I do is I keep three of them a do activities the same sign language start keyboards and the hidden picture is the same for all the word work bins then I only change that first made you activity so that way the students still have different options for each bin but they're not overwhelmed with choices one of the major activities for this bin was Bananagrams now I put these in my Amazon stores so you can find them down in the description but I really really like it because again there's no prep I just put the Bananagrams in here and the students are ready to go now I'll give you a little hint I tell my students that they have to use the Bananagrams in the word workbench so that way it's all contained in one area and the pieces aren't going all over the floor now when they were doing that because it was hitting the plastic it was pretty noisy so I did find these felt pieces at Walmart I think there were like 23 cents apiece so they were super super cheap and they perfectly fit in the bottom of the word work bin so I keep this in here and the students pour all the Bananagrams on top of it and it really helps to cut down so there's less noise my next word bin again I have must do and major activities so for this bin there must of activity is ghost words and then if they have time their choices are stencils sign language art keyboards and hidden picture so my students really love the ghost words this again is part of my word work pack it's only $1 the link is in the description basically the students write their words in the boxes in white crayon so they can't see them and then they use a marker to color overtop and reveal their words so again I like to keep all the materials in the board work box so they're ready to go so I just had this cheap pencil case this was from Walmart and it has all their markers and it also has a white crayon in there so the major activity for this word workman was stencils so these are in my Amazon store and I'll put the link to them down in the description and again I just store it in one of these really cheap pencil cases from Walmart so if my students do choose the stencils they do it in their spelling journal that's a notebook that they take back and forth to school each night for their spelling homework and again in this bin I do have the sign language chart and then they also can pick the keyboards or the hidden picture as well so the next word work been the must do activity is word search and then for their made do activities they can choose between magnetic letters a sign language chart keyboards or hidden picture so the word search is just as simple as it sounds again this is part of my word work pack basically they put their words in the word search and then they fill in with random letters and they do list their words at the bottom the major activity for this word work then is magnetic letters don't think that your students are too old for magnetic letters I guarantee you second third fourth even fifth graders still love to use magnetic letters I did get my magnetic letters off of Amazon and again they're in my Amazon store and the link is down in the description now I just store them in this large pencil bag that came from Walmart and I do have multiple copies of each letter so you have a couple of options for where your students actually build their words if you have an extra whiteboard in your room or you have a metal cabinet you can certainly have your students use the letters on those if you don't have those I'm going to give you a couple of other options option number one is a cookie tray from Dollar Tree it's only $1 I have several that I've used for the past two years and they've held up perfectly now my problem is they don't fit in these word work beds they're too long so I had to come up with something else that I could keep in the word workbench so that it was all in one place so what I actually ended up finding after walking around Walmart for like an hour was these burner covers so these are actually made for covering your burner for your stove so these are in the kitchen section what I really like is they're super thin so they don't take up a lot of space in the word work bin this pack came with two of the large ones this is actually the larger one and then there's two small ones as well and I think it was like four dollars so it comes out to about a dollar apiece which is the same classes of cookie trays from Dollar Tree why I really like these is because they do fit perfectly in the word work bin and like I said they're very thin and they don't take up a lot of space and I did add some burner covers to my Amazon store as well so you can check those out another option for you would be a small like dry erase magnetic board this one actually came from five below I think it was like three dollars but I really really like that it's nice and thin and it doesn't take up a lot of space my last word work then the must of activity is squiggle spelling and then their major activities are stamps sign language chart keyboards and hidden picture so again the squiggle spelling is part of my work work pack and this one's pretty simple basically they write one word in each different part of the squiggle and they write the word over and over and over again to fill in that space when you introduce that to your students you will want to emphasize that students need to write the word small and they can't write it super big just to take up space in the squiggle if mine do that I make them redo it at recess the may do activity for that word work Ben is stamps so I did put stamps in my Amazon store and this is just a container from Dollar Tree and I really like that it snaps on the side so it's nice and secure and all of the stamps fit perfectly inside now for ink pads I just grabbed these at Dollar Tree so I have red green and blue and what I really like about these is that they do have this cover so that way they're not actually losing the cover it's all connected in one piece and it just slips up and then they can flip it back down and again in this bin I do have a sign language chart and then they're also able to pick keyboards or the hidden picture words now I wanted to give you just a couple other ideas in case you have more than five bins and you need more ideas for word work I know a lot of people that really like to use play-doh for word work and you have a couple of different options you can have the students just use the play-doh and kind of roll it into balls and stretch it out and make it into the letters or you can use play-doh cutters so yesterday I was actually at Big Lots and I did find these dough cutter so it was a big bin and it had all of the letters all of the numbers plus a ton of other shapes and it was only five dollars so what I did is I just took out all the letters and I'm storing it in just this plastic pencil case now I don't let my students use play-doh often because it oftentimes is a pretty big mess so what I'm going to do is once a month probably at the end of each month I will allow my students to use a play-doh as another word work choice another word work choice for you could be Magna doodle boards now there are like the really big ones but they also make small mini ones I was able to get a couple at Target about two years ago they were $3 apiece they lasted for about two years and then they stopped working so I no longer had that as a word work toys only because they didn't last long but if you have some of the larger Magna doodle boards or you have some of the super sturdy ones that last a long time that would definitely be a great word work choice for you another choice for you could be pipe cleaners my students love this activity as well basically they just get a pile of pipe cleaners and they bend them into the letters to spell out their words hopefully this gave you a couple of ideas for word mark activities and it also gave you ideas on how to organize them again the way that I organize them is not the only way I already told you that I've completely changed the way that I organize them so make sure you figure out what works for your classroom I have one more video coming on daily 5 it's going to be on reads itself read to someone and listening to reading my plan is to get that video up next weekend
