hi hey welcome to my youtube channel hi - online reaching at here we have hello so I got the idea to do this video when I recently watched this entire Brown documentary on Netflix and I just kept thinking like does she have a mental problem or is she a genius to answer this question we have to go to the beginning so the story starts with two people Ellen a brown is Centaurus adoptive mother and Georgia Mitchell is Centaurus birth mother Georgina wanted el Annette to take care of baby Santoya she was gonna be just gone for a little bit and she would be back Ellen I said okay fine I'll hold on to her for a little bit but Georgina never came back week's turned into months and Ella net began to get close to the little girl so fast-forward she got some guardianship papers and it became official everything was fine everything was cool until Georgina shows up again so it had been a year since Georgina just totally went ghost and she showed up and had the nerve to be like um gets in Toya dressed I'm picking her up Ella net had to go to work so she was married to her husband Thomas so she told Thomas keeps some toy with you I gotta go to work if Georgina comes do not give her cent Oya that same afternoon while Ella net was at work Thomas calls her panicking because of course he didn't listen to her Georgina did in fact show up and when he said no she can't go with you she made up this whole story about how she was just gonna take her shopping it was her daughter and she would be right back and that Thomas agreed it had been hours and hours and Georgina had not come back with Santoya at this point soon Toya is 18 months old I hate when people say that she's one-and-a-half years old months had passed and finally one of Lynette's neighbors who was actually Georgina's sister came forward she said I know where Santoya is and you know we had been covering for my sister but we were seeing that she's actually not taking care of her she's not doing the right thing and we think you should have her back so Georgina's sister told her that Georgina was in Georgia I had to say it like 10 times at such a hard time Georgina was in Georgia red leather yellow leather anyway they end up finding out that soon Toya was with an elderly couple and that Georgina had basically left Santoya with that couple and just bounced a Lynette had to drive seven hours from Tennessee to Georgia to go and pick up Santoya but when she arrived some Toya wasn't there finally they end up finding that she was with another couple so weird how they just keep throwing this poor little girl and so Elle Annette was at that time thinking it's been six months this girl has been gone with her mother who knows what she has seen what she's experienced who she's been left with what happened to her we could only imagine but she shows up to the couple's house Santoya recognized her voice ran up to her and jumped in her arms and was basically like crying telling her why did you leave me where did you go why did you leave me ever since that moment everybody says that Tsin Toya was never the same who knows what happened to her during those six months so now some Toya is back with Ella net they're back in Tennessee but as I said everybody's like what's wrong with Toya she is unbelievably clingy she's afraid to let go of Ella net as if if she turns around and Ella net isn't there she's gonna be gone forever and who knows where she's gonna end up so clearly she's already traumatized so soon Toya actually wrote a audio book which I listened to it like one and a half speed trying to cram it in before I filmed this video very depressing Nelson Toya is biracial her adoptive mother and adoptive father are black and the school she went to the community she was in was all black so she was made fun of for being lighter for being wide for having parents that look different than her she basically was constantly getting into fights with the students and getting into fights with the teachers she was acting out from a very young age her adoptive father Thomas Thomas okay he was a Vietnam vet he actually got a Purple Heart but he had a major alcohol problem which also would turn into a rage problem he was what you call an angry drunk his nickname was actually EJ because he drank the EJ brandy like non-stop now not only did he have a temper when he drank but he would take his anger out specifically onsen Toya all the time he would tell her how she wasn't worth anything her mother was a prostitute a [ __ ] a drunk love Allah and that she was going to turn up just like her mother one fateful night this is insane right so picture this so Thomas is getting drunk he's hurling insults he's going on his regular rampage and L Annette decides I'm done we're not doing this anymore so she tries to take his alcohol and pour it down the drain which was not a good idea because it basically sent EJ or Thomas into a rage he basically attacked Ellen ed he choked her he started yelling at her and it was like this whole horrific thing now what ended up happening was that his son John found out about it which sent him into a rage John comes to the house and basically attacks Thomas for attacking his mother okay cinto was their sin Toya was standing there petrified screaming and crying watching this she had a knife in one hand and a phone in the other she apparently was trying to figure out what she should do she decided to call 911 she called 911 reported it and Ella net says that after this happened Thomas never forgave sinn Toya for calling the cops on him keep in mind that while this whole thing happens soon Toya was 9 years old she started drinking she would take gulps of wine gulps of beer and soon she was basically drinking every chance she could get now the thing about Santoya is that she's very smart right she was at the gifted program in school teachers always noticed she was smart but at the same time she would act out soon Toya was so smart that in seventh grade when she was in the gifted program she was able to take the a CT college entrance exam and she took it 7th grade alongside high school seniors doing just as well as they did but then while she was 12 years old at around that same time she gets caught stealing from her friend's mom like thousands of dollars worth of jewelry so she gets kicked out of the gifted program and she gets put into an alternative school for at-risk kids and this is when it really started to go downhill now during a psychological evaluation one of the examiners was shocked quote the girl began speaking in a high-pitched singsong voice threatening to kill her father and cursing staff members she was completely out of touch with reality Thorazine was administered immediately she told staff members at that facility that she had actually been sexually abused by Thomas but then she recanted it took her back so I don't know take that how you will she then found herself in another facility if you thought that it couldn't spiral even more it does right at Woodland Hills she completely spirals she was involved in 20 assaults on other students in the book she'll explain some of them she just would feel like somebody betrayed her like somebody planted something in her room to get her in trouble with the authorities and then that girl would be like smiling while she was getting in trouble for something and it would send her into a rage and she would attack the girl at the age of 14 she was put on a heavy-duty cocktail of psychotropic drugs she also was said to always expect others to fail and betray her but then she would act in ways to make it so that others would fail and betray her it was like this really sad self-fulfilling prophecy but then yet even still she had this overwhelming desire for approval and to have other people be impressed with her and think highly of her and this they said was very consistent with a borderline personality disorder she was released from Woodland Hills when she was 15 years old when she got back home to stay with her mother she actually started hanging out with this girl who lived in the neighborhood they would skip school and actually go hang out in this abandoned home nearby so one day Ella net found out and they got into a big big fight very soon after that is when Santoya ran away so now Tsutaya is 16 years old she's living in Nashville with a girl called shikou shaaa I'm probably saying that wrong but it's felt kosha so a little bit later it's now July 2004 and Santo Amit's 24 year old remember she's 16 she meets 24 year old cut through now cut throat would at first make it seem like he was interested in her he wanted to be her boyfriend and they were in this romantic relationship she then claims that her relationship was cut throat shifted and he started to become an abusive he choked her out until she passed out he would beat her slowly but surely he started to prostitute her and basically he went from being her boyfriend to being her pimp it's 11 p.m. on a Friday night it's August 5th 2004 Santoya and cutthroat have been on a cocaine bender for two weeks they get into a fight and cut throat tell Santa go make me some money Santa leaves the motel on foot and she walks towards the sonic dragon when she gets there a43 old man by the name of John Allen pulls up in his white pickup truck and he asks her if she needs a ride she gets in the car instead of taking her to a motel like usual he tells her that he wants to take her to his home according to Santoya and they get to his home they have a meal there talking and he's telling her about himself he says that he's a sharpshooter he showed her a chrome pistol a double-barrel shotgun and a 22 caliber caliber and a 22 caliber rifle so she says that she was trying to pretend to like go to sleep and lay down and close her eyes John Allen kept getting up and going to the bathroom and then going to the bedroom and then coming back he basically did that a few times since Oya says that this was causing her alarm she started to get paranoid obviously the cocaine didn't help he took off his boxers and he laid down in the bed completely naked and he reached and grabbed her in between her legs she says very hard sentai then says that when she rejected his advances he turned around and like was going to reach for something which caused her panic that's when she reaches into her purse where she had a pistol that cut throat had given her and she grabs it and all of a sudden turns around and shoots him in the back of the head so the evidence is not at all consistent with sentai of events specifically the position that John Allen's body was found in he was found laying facing away from where she would have been in the bed and his hands were interlocked like this this position of his hands is indicative of the fact that he was sleeping when this happened he didn't have any defensive wounds and there was no gun next to him what there was however was a fully loaded magazine clip there was an entry wound in the back of his head that came out there was also a exit wound in the front of his head and that the force of the gunshot had apparently dislodged Allen's hairpiece there's nothing funny about this case at all but I don't know why when I heard I kind of wanted to laugh but I stopped myself she drives in John Allen's truck back to the motel that she's staying at with cutthroat she then grabs the weapons that she stole and she comes up to the room when she gets there and explains to cut throat what happened he's so upset that she brought the guns into the room completely unconcealed and he tells her that she needs to get rid of the vehicle wipe her fingerprints off the door at this point it's 3:00 a.m. Santa gets back into the truck drives from the motel to a nearby Walmart where she's then caught on surveillance footage leaving the car there waving down a black SUV and asking for a ride back to the motel so now she's back at the motel and she's watching the news again she's still not hearing anything about what she did what happens next to me showed me a mentally ill side of her especially with her impulse control because it's like she couldn't wait she couldn't sit in it she could shoot she needed the next thing to happen so what did she do she called 911 called and she tried to make her voice sound like a older man and she says quote 2728 mas Dale Drive but the dispatcher responds and says what's going on over there ma'am she just says homicide and hangs up days later detectives started knocking on the door of their motel room and her and cut start panicking cut answers the door and immediately he's pulled out and pinned down and Santoya runs out and starts hysterically screaming quote cut didn't have nothin to do with it I'll tell y'all everything detectives then takes entire to an interrogation room but before they turn on the cameras they basically tell her that if she cooperates with them it's gonna make all the difference in the world then they turn the cameras on and the interrogation begins the detectives start reading Santoya her Miranda rights they get to up point where they say that the suspect must affirm that no promises have been made by the police in return for a statement at this point on-camera Santoya interrupts them and she says quote you're not sitting here and you're not promising me anything as far as helping me if I talk but you just promise me that then one of the detectives starts stammering and stumbling over his words a little bit and he says that he only assured her outside of the view of the video camera that he would tell the district attorney she was cooperative so then some Toya reads back the Miranda rights but she skips over the part that's talking about the promises less than a week later she then gets moved into a mental health institute where she gets an evaluation at this mental health institute she becomes a quote nightmare patient center I wanted to call Ellen X and when the nurse refused she went ballistic she attacked the nurse and she said quote I shot that man in the back of the head and I'm gonna shoot you three times in the back of the head and would love to see her blood splatter on the wall she required what's called a four point which is when every limb is secured down and then they gave her more Thorazine which is the same drug that they gave her when she had gone to an institution when she was around 12 the counselor started thinking she seems like she has borderline personality disorder which is characterized by wild mood swings extreme impulsivity and paranoia but the doctors also found that she was very very smart she had an IQ of 134 which is in the 90th percentile they say that she was a teenage case study on the difference between intelligence and mental stability they decided to try her as an adult the prosecution claimed that it wasn't self-defense because of the way that his body was positioned and the fact that she had stole items the jury comes back with a guilty verdict guilty on all counts which in the state of Tennessee carries an automatic life sentence if tried as an adult Santoya was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole 51 years into her sentence so she would be 69 years old before she would have ever have a chance to parole so after her sentencing she would end up filing for multiple requests for appeal and a retrial and she would get rejected each time until she had completely ran out of all of her Appeals during the time that she was incarcerated there was a PBS documentary done on her in this documentary they interviewed her mother and in this interview her mother admits to drinking a fifth of vodka a day while she was pregnant with Santoya so this attorney from Nashville sees this documentary sees a whole new argument that could be made first and Toya and decides to take on her case pro bono he decides to go with the approach that Santoya suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome they bring in these experts to describe what that means and its effect on Santoya now since oil was not briefed beforehand about what they were gonna say the doctors testified and said things like quote sin Toya has a remarkable IQ but she did not function like a typical person with such high intelligence her adaptive functioning skills were at the level of a mentally [ __ ] individual then another expert came out and said her functional abilities are terrible they are so terrible that they're equivalent to a person with mental retardation you could see her visibly crying when they would say mental retardation and then the doctor continued she has an IQ that is in the 130s she is extremely bright from that perspective but her ability to apply that appropriately independently on a day-to-day basis in the real world is profoundly impaired and they said that this impairment was due to the fetal alcohol syndrome the judge was not swayed by the faecal Alka fever the judge was not at all swayed by the fetal alcohol syndrome argument and her request was denied at this point this was her last appeal this was our last chance so she had completely resigned herself to the idea that she was going to spend life in prison sanjaya she got her GED with a 4.0 GPA then she got an associate's degree from Lipscomb University and a bachelor's degree from the same university and her professor said that sin Toya was the most outstanding student he's ever had he also said that despite having not regularly attended school past the seventh grade she turned in written work at a level that he would expect from a college junior the then Santoya goes viral because of a post made by Rihanna that says imagine at the age of 16 being sex trafficked by a pimp named cutthroat after days of being repeatedly drugged and raped by different men you were purchased by a 43 year old child predator who took you to his home to use you for sex you end up finding enough courage to fight back and shoot and kill him you're arrested as a result tried and convicted as an adult and sentenced to life in prison this is the story of Santoya Brown she will be eligible for parole when she's 69 years old fries and Toya Brown a bunch of celebrities start reposting reposting recent Toya Brown fries and Toya Brown the case gets a lot of attention and Santoya Brown makes her bid for clemency now get this at her clemency hearing the prosecutor who argued against her in her trial was now sitting right next to her arguing for her release it was a stunning turn of events and very convincing sin Toya Brown is granted clemency at the age of 31 back to the original question his sin Toya Brown mentally ill or is she a genius for the skeptics out there this one is for you hear me out skeptics say that Santoya is very very smart individual so smart that when she got arrested she requested law books and a law dictionary and she was studying the books and the dictionary and she had learned about abuse and victims of abuse and how they act and that she was mimicking those behaviors that she was acting in a textbook way to get a diagnosis from the people evaluating her so that she could use it as her defense me personally I'm I'm not so sure about that intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence are two very different things she would have these outbursts of anger in situations where she knows it's making her look bad but she literally like can't control herself and she would be talking calmly and then all of a sudden she'd like remember something she'd get really angry and it seemed uncontrollable it didn't seem like calculated when I think at the storm of events and how she was paranoid from the cocaine and she was in this guy's house and she felt like everything was weird and why is he walking to the bathroom why is he showing me the guns why am I at his house I rejected him he's bound to be pissed but then the evidence the evidence of him being sleep lets me know that I just don't think that what she said was true I just think I don't know what was going on in her mind but I think that at some point he was there and he was asleep and she decided I'm gonna shoot him and she did it then I think she panicked she panicked and she started doing all the things that she did afterwards instant Toya Brown mentally ill or a genius I believe both I believe that she's a very very smart person who threw the fetal alcohol syndrome combined with her traumatic early childhood has no impulse control and has a rage problem and those things mixed together with drugs and crazy situations could result in crazy things such as shooting somebody while they're sleeping when you see her now she seems like she really understands that she's been given a second chance and that she's gonna do everything in her power to prove that the people who gave her her freedom back did not make a mistake only time will tell thank you so much for watching and I'll see you in the next one bye
