faul cards and cubs at busch here's john [Music] now from Busch Stadium in st. Louis the first-place Cardinals meet their arch rivals the Cubs on the Sunday night baseball game of the week 2002 has been a year of trial by fire for the Cardinals stunned by the tragic death of Darryl Kile the cards have carried on in his memory slugger Albert Pujols has helped shoulder the offensive load and the cards makeshift starting rotation has more than held its own back of ace Matt Morris despite injury and tragedy the Cardinals lead the center tonight Morris goes for his 13th win up against Sammy Sosa who's tied for the league lead with 31 home runs [Applause] [Music] the Johnny and Joe show just to let you know the horror fan club get ready when you're here million more in [Applause] before there's no clocks no halftime [Music] it's a hot night in st. Louis Nextel presents ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Tonight Matt Clement takes the hill for the Cubs up against the cargos ace Matt Morris it's Morris up against Sammy Sosa very shortly when we come back on the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week [Music] what can a canoe teaches about partnership you cover more distance when you work in tandem what can handlebars teach us about leadership stability is crucial and what can we learn about trust from a diner you better off with those that have been around awhile wisdom is everywhere uncommon wisdom is knowing how to apply it where work oviya securities our eyes are always open to new ways of helping thousands of growing companies and millions of individual investors talk to us because when we take all the junior and had all that we've learned we can achieve uncommon results Wachovia Securities Watson get this to Fargo ASAP yes sir J Fargo room 206 thanks and take this to Vegas Vegas Ford Focus the only small car on car and drivers ten best last three years running [Music] introducing McDonald's new grilled chicken 5s sandwich warm flatbread and grilled chicken melted altogether with pepperjack team it's the newest sensation come on hon just tell me what soaps you want this isn't really my kind of place well they I just use the stuff I got at the hotel but that's next tool right yes how about just some soap scented soap it's all fun with the walkie-talkie right yeah so cool you should do their commercials commercials I want to be a serious actress [Music] the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week presented by Nextel Nextel how business gets done and in part by smooth push beer an easy drinkin bush light it's a hot night in st. Louis and the Cubs and Cardinals renew their rivalry here at Busch Stadium the Cardinals have just taken the field so we're moments away from getting started let's take a look at the Cubs batting order now the nextel Cubs batting order against Matt Morris the copy's will have mark Bellhorn leading it off at shortstop Bill Miller at third then Sammy Sosa in right Fred McGriff at first Moises Alou in left young Corey Patterson in center Delino DeShields the veteran at second child Hundley doing the catching batting 8th Mac Clement is the pitcher batting ninth hello everyone I'm John Miller welcome to Sunday Night Baseball my partner Joe Morgan at the Hall of Fame with his fellow immortals we're pleased to welcome Rick Sutcliffe hey I don't even miss Joe even after 13 years we've got Rick here we'll be just fine believe me now we got this big rivalry it's the rubber match the Cardinals in the pennant race and they've got their race going Matt Morris but Rick I know you pitch them any of these cup Cardinal matchups over the years it's a little bit different than any other game for these two teams well it's really a wonderful rivalry for the fans it would be a better rivalry for the players if the Cubs were in contention more often but the reason the Cardinals are in contention this year is because of a guy named Albert Pujols he won the Rookie of the Year last year and he handled that publicity terrifically he right now is an MVP candidate and the reason for that manager Tony LaRussa says is because of his discipline both on and off the field he just simply doesn't have the bad habits that most 22 year old guys have all right Rick so we'll be seeing a lot of Albert Pujols tonight and Jim Edmonds and that's kind of lineup which has been pretty potent you can also fans at a home play along with tonight's game by locking on to espn.com right now for ESPN's new interactive baseball game it's a whole new kind of fantasy baseball and it is live right now at espn.com keyword e TV so there is Matt Morris and Morris a 22 game winner last year 12 and 6 this year and in his last two starts he beat the San Francisco Giants the top contender over in the National League West and got a wide variety of pitches Rick I'll tell you what John the reason though is this one right here that he was able to beat the Giants and those last two starts he got the command and a location back on that curveball he changed his speeds to get ahead in the count he tightens it up to finish it and there is ball one to mark Bellhorn so we are underway at 7:07 central Daylight Time 93 degrees the gametime temperature Bellhorn fouling one away now Bellhorn has kind of come out of nowhere and I did replaced he fired on Baylor Bellhorn has moved into that leadoff spot he's hitting 280 and it gives you the pop out of the leadoff spot he said a guy who's much more likely to hit a home run than to steal the base that a speedster and he takes a called strike on the outside of the knees one ball and two strikes still as some sunshine in the the left-field area which Albert Pujols will have to contend with here at the very beginning of the ballgame it makes for a difficult background to start off [Applause] two balls two strikes and John just like a hitter has to adjust to that breaking ball so will home plate umpire Greg Gibson the length of the curveball Morrises is like very few well there's that strike three couple of things happened when Darryl Kile passed away one Matt Morris lost like what he calls an older brother too he lost his curveball coach and when he lost his focus on that pitch Darryl wasn't there to bring him out of it it's back now Cardinals defensively back of Morris as Bill Miller takes ball one Miller a switch hitter and after a very slow start he was coming back from an injury Miller has lifted his average up to 250 three homers 23 batted in he is from this area and grew up a st. Louis Cardinals fan and whenever he plays here he always has to leave a lot of passes for family and friends and of course grew up rooting against the Chicago Cubs as the arch rivals these tickets aren't easy to get and the shark curveball on one of two strikes one of the best infield defenses in the National League right now last year for Nando V Nia won the Gold Glove this year the Cardinals think Edgar Renteria should strike three [Applause] [Music] often running to begin with as we take a look at the K zone here just painting that generous inside corner by home plate umpire Greg Gibson Matt Morris when Darryl Kile passed away everything he was just lost he said he just didn't realize what was going on he just couldn't put it together on the field took a couple of days off John for the all-star game just more mentally than physically Sammy Sosa 31 homers tied for the league lead in that category and ball two as Morris works him very carefully now Morris was particularly successful in this ballpark last year and over the years he was 15 and 2 in this ballpark last year the time to get to him has been in the first inning so soon the big rip I found will go out off to the right now even now that part of that hitters backdrop this and bright Delayer off the the backdrop from the Setting Sun so if the hitters and the pitchers in the shadows it could be a tough time to to really get a good look at a pitch from a guy like Morris there's the curveball to into India see Sammy was headed half way back to the dugout on that one how many times do a crowd react to just a called strike two well they do when you can get Sammy Sosa to duck like that the first ball to the inside and Morris Tony had him he started off the mound toward the dugout he knows what this crowd wants they want to see that right arm of the home plate umpire go up in the air he got the generous call on the inside corner of the left-hander not that one and a curveball and three at two but he walks Sammy Sosa and I think that does point something out about Morris and that curveball when he's got the feel for it you'll throw it at any time to anybody Tony LaRussa Cardinal manager his seventh year here at the helm with the Cardinals and it's a big day and say Louis for baseball with the Cubs here with the Cardinals first place in the division and with one of the all-time great Cardinals the wizard Ozzie Smith going into the Hall of Fame today up in Cooperstown now Fred McGriff and McGriff after a real poor start to the season has really come on he's got 22 homers 72 runs batted in now for the 266 average shortstop Renteria plays in well over toward the middle and that's a strength part of the outside ball one strike the Cubs starting pitcher back ferment the old mold and McGriff with a single to left field hit that breaking ball hard so should a second he'll stop there as who host comes up with it and how moisei saloon this was the master plan for the Cubs this year Sosa mcgriffin Alou was supposed to do a lot of damage in the middle well tell you what that's that's a difficult pitch to do damage with yet like you say John Fred McGriff right on top of it you're hot you're hot here's another guy standing at home plate that got hot as he said right before the all-star break and then those three days off cooling right back to where he was but he picked it up with three hits yesterday boy states all kinds of injuries from Spring Training on the right-center Felix into the alleyway so still no score as drew picks it up McGriff is going to be waved home [Music] thirty days days a loo that comes lead to nothing [Applause] a 2-run double for Alou McGriff kind of limping around the bases but made it nonetheless elude a third on the throw right on top of this fastball on the outside corner that's too difficult pitches thrown by Matt Morris that Fred McGriff and Moises Alou have handled but the handle of the relay throw was what was different here JD drew did not hit Fernando vini in the air with that throw and because of that ball not getting to be he didn't get a real good grip on it that throw got away from him going to home or else they would have had McGriff now Corey Patterson the rookie he was hitting leadoff quite often and do manager Don Baylor but Bruce Kim who took over when Baylor was finer has it moved it down the order most of the time a fastball up and away one ball one strike now what we've just seen here in this city the two-out rally a walk to Sosa single McGriff double by Alou that was supposed to be happening all year long that was the master plan for this Cubs landed and has not happened very often that girl in tahrir windy night by the way Renteria staggering a bit he stayed with it now the crackles coming up with their trailing juniper this is a Honda certified used car even if you take away its 150 point inspection it's comprehensive 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and it's concurrent 7 year he just got allow that he's small and he wants it all don't miss Austin Powers in Goldmember in theaters now think outside the bond baby yeah Sunday Night Baseball the Cubs to the Cardinals coming to bat here on a hot muggy night in st. Louis let's take a look at the Nextel battle for the the hometown nine Fernando vineya leading off at second base against Mac Burnett then Placido Polanco at third base Jim Edmonds and he's had a big week in centerfield Albert Pujols having another outstanding year left for JD Drew they've only been able to use him occasionally with the bad knees in right field Tino Martinez two former Yankee at first Edgar Renteria having a sensational year at shortstop Mike DeFelice the catcher is usually is with Morris doing the pitching and batting ninth and there's Mac Clement on the mound and I mean his numbers look fabulous all the way other than for the wins and losses I mean he's he's been real tough to hit yeah I was talking with manager Bruce Kim before the game he said he could easily have 12 or 13 victories when you think about the power in the Chicago cub rotation John Lieber Kerry Wood Mark Prior this is the guy right now leading that team in strikeouts he has finally gotten mechanically together the talent has always been there at one time John he was declared untouchable even even up for Kevin Brown the reason for that right down there that's the sinking fastball that has as much movement as the guy we just mentioned Kevin Brown so max lament was averaged more than one strikeout per inning this year he's pitched a hundred thirty and two third innings with 136 strikeouts and here is Fernando Vania bill Miller faced shallow at third that is a called strike [Applause] Mack's lament from a small town in Pennsylvania lives in Butler Pennsylvania he was a basketball player as a kid Goodwin and that was his real serious sport Bellhorn throws on video and there is one away I'm gonna test Bellhorn right off the bat normally playing second base at shortstop this evening though with Alex Gonzalez getting the night off but it's Corey Patterson out in centerfield that they really need to come around not only offensively but defensively as well he's being initiated as manager previous manager Don Baylor said learning the hitters learning the pitchers and positioning himself properly voici though for Lancome the third baseman but the question is will he still be the third baseman on Wednesday or a week from now one reports where it was a done deal yesterday they they've changed a little bit evidence reports were erroneous and the Walt Jocketty the general manager of the Cardinals before the game tonight said that there's nothing imminent he does not dispute the fact that he's talked about acquiring Scott Rolen for the Phillies but he does dispute any notion that there's anything about to happen one ball one strike to Polanco here on the outside for false Polanco he is part and but hit the ball real well lately especially lifted his average of 286 not a power hitter in fact the the Cardinals are getting less RBI tie production at a third base than almost any other team in the majors and a spider he chases at strike three [Applause] Juden I think that would just flat demoralize the National League center of the Cardinals brave will pick up Scott Rolen speaking of we're gonna see two of the better breaking balls in baseball here tonight at being Clemente slider and along with the curveball of Matt Morris we've already witnessed she looked from mask and that was so far away that silently had to go way outside the back gap that one now here is Jim Evans 21 homers 55 runs batted in said some injuries to deal with this year but he's hitting 323 still playing an outstanding centerfield one bottle no strikes telling me before the game he's not real happy with this swing now here early again today for extra batting practice so the fact that he's hit 448 in the last 10 games well you know what to tell you it feels like you should be doing better than that it tells me that this is a new Jim Edmonds this isn't the guy they talked about in Anaheim and questionable work happens he knows with a guy like Clemente on the mound most of the right-handed bats are going to be quiet so the left handers have to step it up with a guy like this and he's one of the key guys to do that LaRussa wanted to get as many lefties as possible in the order against Clemente he's been tough against all comers but especially against the rivals big fool holes slugger but a right-handed sluggers on deck tutor nothing the Cubs are leading back to amends trying to dispatch the Cardinals here in order to down nobody on but it's a 3-1 count to Edna's watch and ball bounces over near the Cubs dugout on the third base side that evidence takes his walk well I think we're already seeing early sign as to what the game plan is for each pitcher tonight Matt Norris with two outs nobody on a 3-2 curveball decisive and he left only time Gophers dry-heave China kicks that outside corner take a look at might be police there about what unraveled for them in the top of the first well right now because of Mack Clemente being so cautious with Jim Edmonds and his first at-bat one swing of the bat by Albert Pujols this game to be tied together so here comes Albert now fools who had that remarkable rookie season in terms of RBIs and runs scored he's right there among the leaders again this year this year unlike Lasher they saw him coming I mean they knew he was one of the trimmers loggers and he's still doing it again third in the league at the start of the day an RBI is behind only Lance Berkman of Houston Luis Gonzalez of Arizona eighth in the league in homeruns when the day began 23 takes that slacker one ball one strike now last year at this time he had a little bit better batting average but the actual production numbers the power numbers are almost identical a little bit better in terms of RBIs stepping off the slab is Clemente now in st. Louis fans who would remember fondly the days back in 67 68 when the Cardinals went to the World Series two years in a row one of their leaders was the Slugger Orlando Cepeda a Hall of Famer and who holes kind of reminds people around here of Cepeda it's a foul tip and or a foul off the catcher hunting one ball and two strikes Joe Morgan it kind of reminds Joe's another model favor Tony Perez yeah yeah another haul absolutely whose son is with the Cardinals I think the biggest thing about pool horses is his desire to improve after every bat woody Williams and Darryl Kile used to tell me he would come back and ask them what do you think the pitchers going to try to do to be the next hit back whether we succeeded or not he wanted to get ready for the next one that is foul and he got a spider and his body started forward but he kept the hands back and actually a little too quick on it you know he's an outstanding on-base type guy along with the slugging percentage which is a rare combination and the reason for that he doesn't panic with two strikes he doesn't mind seeing a lot of pitches in his first at-bat because he has confidence even with the guy as tough as familias that he can put the ball in play he almost did there one ball and two strikes Matt Clemente former basketball player out of Pennsylvania and that goes back to the bag at first he was mostly a third baseman when he played high school baseball he was about to sign the Gulf Lake big-time college basketball in the senior year and the Scout came to take a look at another player in the game that he was playing in and he ended up going to the mounted pitching and the Scout who was there registered him 95 miles an hour one of his pitches and suddenly the scouts from around the country were coming to watch Clemente pitch his mama said as his coach in high school said that one radar gun reading kind of changed his life Albert Phu holes standing in here against Clemente two balls two strikes as Tony LaRussa his Cardinals have been vagabonds lately they've been traveling all around the country West Coast two games back home into Pittsburgh then to San Francisco now these three back home and they traveled again after history's fools chases that slider in the dirt Huntley is frozen [Applause] strong first inning by Clemente strong first inning for the Cubs they lead to nothing out here everyone has their own mountain to climb [Music] to measure up to [Music] for years mister there's a monster outside my room last night science waited thirty thirteen starts or a second technology shouldn't overwhelm you it should open your mind Samsung digital brings it all together with ease [Music] now you're free to do more on your terms while smile it's all here Samsung digital everyone's invited [Music] it's so easy to take advantage of the keep his summer offer you can do it with your eyes closed stay three times at LaQuinta get another night free visit lq comm the register era bought a new kia sportage came with three airbags and 24-hour roadside assistance Trish bought a Honda CRV two airbags no roadside assistance Sara Sportage came with a ten year warranty Trish's Honda just three and yet garrett paid thousands less than portrait yeah we shut it Oh Trish's upset it's because there has been dating her ex-boyfriend the 2002 Kia Sportage right now get three thousand cash back through July 31st the line of the shields had just filed away the first pitch year of the second inning for Matt Morris into the seats off to the left end the counters on one DeShields veteran hitting seventh of the order a guy who had one time played for the Cardinals he's hitting only 200 for the year and there's that big curveball for a strike ended his own to Matt Morris back to work here he looked like he had the Cubs overmatched in that first inning striking at the first two then he lost Sousa to a walk McGriff hit one of those curve balls for a single and Alou took a tough fastball into the alleyway in right-center for a 2-run double fastball away and for the Cubs almost a bittersweet first inning I mean they're happy to have the runs happy to have the lead but it was as if to say wow what could have been if this would work this way all year long 3 & 2 Todd Hundley I'm day Matt Morris with 12 wins you get 22 wins last year he's out of a Seton Hall University he's guy who likes to work the team travels he likes to go see the sights in the difference is that my Judas go in and sleep late order room service to you Rick but some guys actually do that but not bad he gets out he goes to San Diego he wants to see the zoo the various cities around the lake he wants to see what is there to be seen or to see their Beach San Diego long enough for your line it's just that's where this dance come out real close to the theme tray into the count yeah the big guys if you run too hard in there you'll become part of this ballpark that would that followed by much you know I think how the pools would probably gain more than any other Cardinal if they were able to acquire Scott Rolen that would solidify him in one position he got T know at first for the next couple of years was rolling there he could just concentrate on that position I think he would improve defensively that curve ball bounce on third base I'm Paul Anka picks it up still three in tune Tony LaRussa said a big part of the reason offensively they were so good last year it was because of the versatility of Albert Pujols you see the numbers already this year that he played in last year he started at four positions in 30 or more games the first guy ever in history to do that but Tony could get the matchups offensively he wanted because of to Olson what he could do and the 10th pitch of the Advanta filed out of play by Delino DeShields see it's real tough for a guy like Morris not to get pumped up when you show up and the place is packed the big rivalry as we mentioned to begin with there's the numbers we mentioned last year look at him trying to strike everybody out instead of just simply getting outs curve ball to DeShields in the dirt the ball four so he gets the walk and Matt Morris who was mentored by Daryl clown told us that he had trouble with his curveball without Kyle here to help him without DK they're helping me with the breaking ball was tough he was he was the Guru especially for me so you know I kind of was lost a little bit and couldn't I step out of my body and see what I was doing wrong like he sometimes watched and you know I was able to fix you know feel different pitches and make some good ones and feel what they felt like and you know try to make it consistent after that Todd I'll be the hitter switch hitter with some power in 10 homeruns for the year all as a lefty hitting only 193 though well Matt Morris I mean they're losing Kyle there was the personal loss I mean they were the best of friends as DeShields runs and he steals it easily [Applause] tense deal of the year for DeShields its to an account to Huntley well the reason Delano's in the ball game is because manager Bruce Kim wanted to give Alex Gonzalez the everyday shortstop arrest the Cubs with an off day tomorrow he thought the two days would help him be stronger for the second half of this year Gonzalez has played every game since Kemp took over his management the tap is slowly diff there that'll get the shield's over to there it is Polanco throws out Hundley at first base biggest change the players were telling me John before the game in managers Don Baylor and Bruce Kim has been the fact that Kim is more aggressive you don't see the sacrifice bun as much he likes to play for that big inning and since he's taking over they've gotten a few of them I would have to think that bunt is in the back of his mind right now though but it's a guy that can lay the bunt down he's not a guy that swings a bad bird wall comes just to make note our second in the league for hitting home runs their last in the league in hitting in general really does not hit overall only up to 38 team after the infielders in or Clemente they already have it to nothing lead Morris is holding a long long while that's all the reason I think that's a that's a design play to see if anybody tips their hand as far as a suicide squeeze is concerned remember Jay Stewart and welts and those guys stepping off real quick with a man on first Tony and his coaches just bear down on that face room she's not kind and did his wall one right now you've seen a lot of Clemente and you feel confident his ability it's back to get this button down if they did etcetera operate the screens well along with that I don't feel real confident in his ability to swing the bat he's a great picture a lot of talent there there he comes and it's a power [Applause] foul DeFelice is talking to the plaintiff Franklin Gibson about it that was in the back of Matt Morris is mine that's the reason watch the police move inside okay if he's if he hears the baserunner come that somebody hollers there he goes he knows right then if you miss miss in and what he tried to do is run that sinking fastball down underneath the attempted squeeze of Matt Clemente he almost got that done they had talked about the sinker that Clemente throws which is nasty I mean Morris he can make that ball do crazy things to at 93 miles an hour and that's what I'm the biggest surprise with me thus far in this bargain has been he's not thrown more of those to get more ground balls and have some easy outs one-on-one the county's not coming this time and the curveball misses to annoy all right so I mean Bruce Kim has already seemed like he's announced it he likes the idea of a suicide squeeze here what the only thing in the back of his mind now would be all right I'll let Bellhorn hit with two outs and Bellhorn has been doing a terrific job offensively for this he didn't look good in the first at-bat there he copies the tag out by these [Music] missed about that time that's the the flipside to the suicide squeeze s that's for sure sidebar well I think knowing you lose here is the fact that Bellhorn that get a chance to drive in a run with two outs Matt's not going to drive in many runs when he has to swing the bat particularly with Morris on the mound the infield in the outfield in there it is I mean Delino did not tip his hand cement just simply didn't get the ball down now Clemente dribbles it up the first base side of Morris and just like that the inning is over first time this year that DeShields has been caught stealing two to nothing Cubs lead drew then Tino Martinez coming up [Music] every year we do this exchange program with our sister city and Bristol England Colorado the vacation possibilities are endless in Colorado call today for a free Colorado vacation guide copito back in the studio are checking in on Oakland and Texas a win for Oakland there'll be three games behind Anaheim in the American League West but here's punch his solo home run first one of the game it's his ninth of the year why not the Rangers bottom of the third all right and quad Rodriguez Alex Rodriguez Rafael Palmero the Texas Rangers you'll need some contribution from all of those big guys and maybe more they take on the New York Yankees tomorrow night right here on ESPN 8:00 Eastern 7 central 5:00 Pacific Monday night baseball Yankees in Texas and the Rangers have been given the Athletics all kinds of trouble there over the weekend I mean when they've got everything working with guys like a-rod Juan Gonzales and Palmeiro and and Pudge in there they can hurt you and they've been hurting open it reminds me how the Cubs are playing tonight JD's leave the hitter I went off to the right drew comes up in the card is second it gets back to men and the Cardinals are trailing to nothing the Cavs got a two-run first inning around and a walk to Sosa single by Fred McGriff and by Moises Alou and a iron spider that is one bottom two strikes to JD drew at Drew's got some problems with his right knee Tony LaRussa said they're just trying to get as much out of me as they [Applause] so he might play a day and set out a day or occasionally maybe two days but they just don't want to press it instead of thought you know I've seen palapas name and but Smith mentioned in the trade for Scott wrong Cardinals wouldn't trade JD to back to the Phillies but they now he was never with the Philip could not go back I actually no reason why the fans were well committed in a there's Walt Jocketty general manager first time we've seen Walt tonight that he didn't have the phone working sorry into the count - drew this and the second walk around like finance in the National League Central Division which the Cubs were hoping to be great parameter din Cardinals have a four and a half game lead over the Reds thus far Houston won again today they got Wade Miller back and he's starting to tear off a winning streak he won again today so the Astros are there which people expected then the Pirates and the Cubs well down in the standings 13 and a half out at the start of the day that's amazing what Houston's done with all that they lost they lost Moises Alou and Vinny Castilla over the winter Shane Reynolds went down with an injury I mentioned Wade Miller's been out carlos hernandez has been hurt kind of lingering followed by Tino Martinez on a play off the third-base side traits made today the Los Angeles Dodgers [Music] a power reliever to go along with their power closer aragaki the fall shooting for the treatment in his victory Mulholland in that trade and a couple of the young pitching prospects one Ricardo Rodriguez very highly thought of in continually but they asked want jacket II about it the jacket he said the Carnales had real high regard for Rodriguez as a prospect and now these San Francisco Giants have acquired veteran Kenny Lofton from the Chicago White Sox all the injuries they've had this past week which you know well chance the four infielders go down before outfielders go David Jeannot chases the high fastball it doesn't the trade deadline is Wednesday night a little different this year with that deadline than I think in the past a lot of big contracts out there general managers used to claim just to keep people from being able to move I think some of those contracts with teams would like to just dump now and get out of odds on thinking the conventional wisdom is that there'll be plenty of guys available all the way up until August 31st so some teams who want to make trades just to get rid of salaries regardless of what they get in return Gino and that is the third strikeout for Clemente he's really sticking with that slider tonight that's been the biggest thing mechanically he has learned to repeat his delivery he's just simplified everything and now let his talent go from there in part of that town you can't just say slider and try to throw it for a strike you've got to be able to pitch with that breaking ball just like you do your fastball and all of that starting to come together for Matt Clemente one down three still at first and here is Edgar Renteria I handed hitter the bag is drew under normal circumstances drew is a base stealing threat get a lot of speed but again he got that bad knee right now now Renteria Tony LaRussa said Renteria established the goal and he want to go out and when that goal of this year's a shortstop is done it all the way around foul ball off his foot the count on one to Renteria month of July he is hitting 398 second best in all of Major League Baseball every walk through Colorado is the only guys in this month and this is probably the best single month of his entire career the guys planted himself on being excellent in the against the best pictures 1997 the wedding around the 1997 was it's hard to believe he picked up his 1,000th career hit on Friday the jockeys beat just 26 years old it seems like he's been on just got started early Edgar Renteria lunch is for that spider mattoon with dreams Philip first-base a great Cardinal offense all year long currently third nationally as a team in batting average hit 384 and the month of July from that hasn't let them give one ball out of the infield yet first today the special day as he spent 15 years as a cart go into the Hall of Fame a 19-year major leaguer who finished his career going into the postseason with the Cardinals in 1996 and he has been commemorated right behind second base on the infield right there the bag around which he cavorted so beautifully so poetically for so many years here in st. Louis what did he do been boarded not fun boarded that's why I'm asking Jones at the Hall of Fame right now you gotta read an airplane okay virtuoso Stein huh you know I think Ozzie Smith is one of those guys is a reason baseball is so popular and so many people play it in football you've got to be 300 pounds or you have to be light and quick in basketball you got to play above the rim but thirteen-year-old kids can look eyes the eye to eye and think you know what if he can do it maybe I can is it a center field a base hit for people a rule will stop at second and at least that will get Morris up to the plate here in the second inning but we're talking about Ozzie Smith playing in this ballpark and playing around the National League for some of the years and let's go back to the bedroom [Music] maybe the greatest play he ever made [Applause] Ranse those they used to have to turn but he truly was a wizard wouldn't he oh my goodness and the amazing thing was is that Ozzie Smith that last play diving headlong out into the outfield he I don't feel to coming in he practiced that I mean these weren't all those things that he improvised it just happened and he used to have a conversation with the left here just in case of play like that came up about how to avoid colliding with him with one another that was so amazing in the fact that Ozzie could never look at the outfield on that play he had to stay on that baseball to have any chance the left fielder could see him coming and possibly avoid him as he just continued to go till he was able to make the play Mac Morris the hitter mechana saw to Morris the two on and two out here in the second of the six hits in 50 that's this year batting average I don't like his chances here against I was gonna say if you need to use the restroom or want something cold to drink you could probably cook hit it start now you planted one more slider and break the mcgrill bad luck for Matt Morris laser beam but right and Magrib Sammy Sosa coming up third will be back honey they gotta come closer look kumquat I don't know what kumquats look like but I got some great looking tomatoes and we need tomatoes they got Kiwis they got some red bags here hey no sorry I'm not him what about bananas I know yeah I get there only ma'am I'm sorry on television in commercials hey pal I don't do commercials sorry as we say on this five bananas too many to get brown you know in a perfect world your home would get smaller when the kids move out in the real world there's century 21 calm the perfect place to find your next home congratulations it's a boy congratulations it's a girl congratulations it's triplets in a perfect world your home would grow with the size of your family in the real world there's century 21 dot-com the perfect way to view thousands of homes instantly [Music] are you being beckoned by Battaglia that can only be one thing answer the call CEO Jaguar retailer for special lease and finance office during the Jaguar London Calling sales event ends September 3rd [Music] new Starbucks double-shot is an invigorating blend of espresso and cream to get you going [Music] Starbucks bottle Frappuccino is a creamy blend of coffee and milk to relax with the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week presented by Nextel Nextel how business gets done [Music] big crowd at Busch Stadium in st. Louis on a hot summer's night late July the Cubs of the Cardinals they've been banging around against each other for a 111 years and as always your Bush Denny to see all those Cardinal fans many wearing red but always a lot of Cubs fans who make their way into Busch Stadium as well and the reverse is true when they play up at Wrigley Field see just as many Cubs fans as Cardinal fans up at Wrigley the two teams are going at it I think it's as special as any rivalry in any sport just because of the fans they have so much fun together they'll taunt each other for nine innings and then go out and have dinner together here is Mark Bellhorn what are you saying Red Sox and Yankee fans aren't that way [Applause] let's say that guy walked into Yankee Stadium wearing that helmet with a Red Sox logo on the Yankee fan wouldn't invite him out to dinner afterward hard toward left-field and although drew went back and looked like the wind might have knocked that one down a little bit Bellhorn retired tomorrow on ESPN the NFL season gets an early start with Monday night countdown providing up-to-the-minute NFL news comprehensive analysis and live interviews get all of your training camp news from the best in the business at 7:00 Eastern six central for Pacific NFL Monday night countdown for more info NFL information log on to espn.com Phil Miller Miller struck out looking his first time two to nothing the Cubs are leading Sammy Sosa is on deck I mean the way things were supposed to work for the Cubs this year there wasn't supposed to be Sami and friends any longer [Applause] Miller is retired for out number two Sammy walked his first time up in this game let's take a look Rick Bo's all out of respect I mean it was almost like the count was Owen - to begin with for Matt Morris he was not going to give in that was a 2-seam fastball of some late movement the curve started out at the same point that's the one he wanted there he saw him hop off the math look get him there as he looked down at his hand and then wiped it off in this heat humidity it's difficult to get a consistent grip on that curve off the outside one no strikes well the master plan was Sammy's gonna have lots of help with two proven sluggers right behind it and at least on this night in st. Louis in the rivalry that's exactly the way it worked they walk Sammy mcgriffin got a single a Lou had a two-run double and has not worked that way very often however sad to say for the copies well one thing that has worked he's only been intentionally walked 10 times last year he led the nationally in intentional passes ten intentional walks with Sammy Barry Bonds record person had been walked intentionally 41 already more than he was intentionally passed last year it's regionals fanny Fred McGriff on deck now McGriff has come around and he's putting together another McGriff type season just where he would pencil them from McGriff before a season started and another kerbals two times in a row I saw that 3 & 2 curveball Sammy checked his swing this time as he takes ball four now McGriff will come up so far it's been a replay that first inning take a look at the moisture on his face right there you know that that's on the hand as well and you can just see the grip and the rotation on that curveball it's just difficult to get it where he wants it consistently when he does good things happen when he doesn't he puts people on base and bad things happen for him in the first inning Sammy back to the bag at first so so one time 3030 man stole 30 bases hit over 30 homers doesn't run much anymore two steals this year he's a 1060 man now [Applause] on bottom those strengths now McGriff hit that curveball for a solid single to left back in the first inning and then allude as you see the the first six weeks of the season were a nightmare for McGriff and since then last two months he's been McGriff again a high pop up foul for these comes a little touch in amongst the spectators out of play I'll tell you what I got one strike John to see the Cubs a lot the first six weeks of the season they seemed like everywhere they went it was cold you know you come out of spring training and everything is beautiful down there in Arizona for them it's hot you get a good sweat going I mean they had the heavy jackets the long sleeves on consistently that first month of the season and those conditions are difficult to hit him although the printer not that difficult for Sammy who hit pretty well but I know what you're saying McGriff another day said and soos is going to go to 30 seconds field Center well just like the first inning a two-out walk de sousa followed by a single from again in the first inning that's what a Lu came up and took a tough basketball for a two-run double now Lou will try and do it again I've heard boy just say a lot of times - there's a fastball right down the middle I don't know why he's not going with that sinking fastball more often get some ground balls instead of line drives Sammy hustling all the way around to get to third base and that's really more important with a guy like Morris on the mound than than anybody else because of that big curveball if he bounces one at third-base you're only nine feet away from scoring a run if he weren't too impulsive there stayed on second walls could bounce walk the revolving he can now now Alou Allu a notorious first ball hitter and he looked like he hurt himself trying to check his swing there he did not check it Mike what is the first place up fire on the appeal bullying in this way that it's shaken his right hand he's got that knob of the bat right in the middle of his bottom hand and difficult to hold up on a stone that curveball is into left centerfield and Alou has his second hit nice pick up in the alleyway two holes to keep us from going through Sousa has scored but and Moises Alou has had two two-out RBI hits and is driven in all three of the Cubs runs and Johnny's had those opportunities because of the respect the league and the Cardinals in particular have for Sammy Sosa Sammy not being selfish just taking the base on ball hoping that his teammates can do what was expected of them all along that's a terrific play by Pujols and great communication by the Gold Glove with Jim Edmonds to tell him second base not third no chance of getting McGriff there but you could hold Moises up at first with the correct throw three nothing covers and it's all been the big guys in the middle Sosa McGriff and Alou Corey Patterson pops a file back and out of play Allu had been hitting only with runners in scoring position 164 for the whole season coming into this game 12 to 73 but he's 2 for 2 tonight is Sammy Sosa cools off the Levin the moment looked like that old punchline for that old comedy the airplane movie the guy said he had a drinking problem get a drink of water and he kept pouring it down his back or all over his face sadly nobody doesn't need help but on a day like this he'll take all he can get it's hot [Applause] Oshin been slopping throughout the month of July it's a back-breaking three-run homer the Cubs are lining it up against the Cardinals ace Matt Morris it is six to nothing [Applause] probably the biggest move manager Bruce Kim made was with the lineup and in particular Corey Patterson he didn't see him right now as a top of the order type guy he doesn't want him to be pasted he doesn't want him to work the count even though he's not a tall guy in stature he has got a lot of power which he just proved to these Cardinal fans in that Morris ninth home run of the year for Corey Patterson this all started with two down and nobody on and a walk to Sammy Sosa and it's turned into a four-run inning the grift single Toulouse singled home a run and I'm Pattinson a three-run homer in the first inning it started the same way two down and nobody on a walk to Sosa and they've scored all six of their runs in innings with two outs you know even at the minor league level Corey Patterson had a lot of strikeouts the Scheels takes a strike and when that happens you just figure that number is even going to go up at the big league level now you asked him to start working the counts and being patient that's going to even increase that to John it's a lot like a young pitcher that comes up from the minor leagues and he walks a lot of guys but numbers going to get worse here because they're more patient strike three called Night Baseball presented by Nextel tonight we're bushed the hometown nine the Cardinals trailing badly in this one early on Fernando Vina the hitter top of the order for the Cardinals that is called a strike from that Clemente vineyard pulled the bat back but looked like he was questioning Greg Gibson about whether he was called for bunting at it or for just a called strike I think he just called it a strike he was questioned as far as starting for the Cardinals tonight you were the first guy to know John did you feel privileged by that Fernando revealed to me his pen just gets it one away there's another ballgame going down in the bunk park in Arlington let's get an update with Bill feed oh all right John is Terrence long here for Oakland they're down one nothing batting in the fourth inning and long goes long solo home run is eighth of the year and Oakland ties a ball game up at one that's where we are right now Texas batting in the bottom of the fourth you know I don't want to say anything to bill but he said it was Texas Fang Oakland but that's the Washington Senators that's the booth but I don't understand why are they wearing the Washington Senators uniforms I mean they they used to be the Washington Senators before they moved to Texas well I'm going to centerfield Corey Patterson and that is - Palacios I saw the Advanta Braves highlights they're wearing the same uniforms that Hank Aaron was wearing the night he broke Babe Ruth's home run record I mean the fact that he's that das aware they're old Reggie Jackson Sal bando by the blue catfish hunter Riley figures uniform don't forget that team was stolen from the Kansas City is but I mean what why where all these uniforms coming from like this I missed that memo I'll tell you what I love it it just you know it takes you back to his you mentioned Hank Aaron hit this home run when I looked at the Braves I think I wonder where Dale Murphy's that you know I didn't I always like pushing his lunch I didn't like the dark ones the white and about the Cleopatra ozzie used to wear a tall man those were the worst uniforms in history nobody's brain those are they I mean Texas is wearing the Washington Senators uniform maybe they'll wear well if they have that I mean this Texas moving back to Washington is that in what's going on Jim Edmonds over there delino deshields and the carcass was gone Larry coming up bat Morris will tell us about his two-seam fastball rich sucker they should be throwing more tonight he's trailing six nothing to the cabbage [Music] [Music] now [Applause] [Music] the night ESPN top of the fourth inning 6 to nothing Cubs first ball swinging Todd Huntley soaring pop fly that restriction one away in our baseball notebook brought to you by Nextel we asked Matt Morris how he throws his two seen fastball Nextel you're direct connection with the best players in the game if I can stay out in front and and stay behind the ball just like a normal fastball without doing anything special to make the ball move I tend to get the good sync I think the important thing is is getting a downward plane and that means being out front and throwing the ball downhill sometimes when my elbow drops a little bit and I push it it just sails and and does tend to get hit over the infield but the ball going down tend to get a lot of ground ball you know those fingers on top of the baseball though are a lot like the ship on top of the ocean what makes that thing move well it's the rudder that that's in the water and you could see his thumb underneath that baseball to get more sink all you do is simply elevate that thumb off to the side more so get it out from directly underneath get more sink and more ground balls curveball strike 3 from actual men very long chewed out well you're just talking about this maybe we could take a look at and throw this curveball and then have you show us everything he's done tonight has been designed to get strikeouts you know that that on a hot night like this that might not be the best game plan to begin with another big breaking ball he's throwing three two breaking balls to just about everybody and he did Bellhorn in the very first inning to the very first hitter I know it's a good pitch for him but he can't forget about his best pitch which is always that fastball that nobody on strike one two horn take strike two before that he's pitching a little bit right now took a little bit off that two-seam fastball on that last pitch if you want to hit it more times than that all you're going to do is beat it on the ground [Applause] run away one block is right he's just got so many weapons 27 years of age they've got something special here wanted to [Music] two balls two strikes last year as the Cardinals were heading towards the postseason he went ten and one down the stretch for them six in though in the month of August curveball Tom fouled let's go to it what with time to an earlier Rick about that two-seam fastball good evening you can see his thumb underneath there well that's just going to keep that thing on the same level if you elevate it just a little bit off to the side you're gonna have more pressure here you can have less velocity but there's going to be more sink involved that's the biggest thing right there wait a minute let me show it show to me right here right there's a thump Greg Maddux talks about you go 1 2 4 seems up off to the side depending on how much see you want to that pitch the more you go up on the more you don't know what the more you go more inside of the baseball the more sink you're going to get the less velocity so that's the one with Maddux throws that pitch this off the outside corner to a right-hand hitter right and it comes back over the plate exactly right there and you'll see him throw the exact same pitch anywhere from 88 to maybe 82 miles an hour just by where his thumbs at so it affects the movement or the sink and it affects the speed and more so let's say you wanted it to 88 but you didn't want that much saying right there if down but now you want a lot to say now you go all the way up to foursie's you just simply count it I mean he's like counting them exactly he knows right words you don't even look at him anymore he's done it so much and you hear the great hitters talk about the toughest part about hitting Maddox is because everything looks the same well the only thing that's different is the location of his rudder now Morris as we see the pitcher that is ball forward a Bellhorn that one ran away from it I mean he's just overthrowing right now he could have done exactly what he did on the second strike see the two seam fastball there he's just throwing that ball as hard as he can rather than sometimes it you know as they say less is more 75% effort better location easier outs one ball no strikes to Bill Miller but now he's got movement and he's thrown 93 94 miles an hour and a big curveball and he can take the four-seam fastball to 96 at times but he started this game up like he was you know going to break Kerry woods record you know a 20 strikeout he got the first two guys look here's an off-speed pitch here but just simple overthrown you can see how he just kind of stayed inside of the baseball but everything is up right now as far as that off-speed pitch in the fast bowler consumed I mean so far as he misses with another chain whenever he said two down and nobody on the Cubs have him right where they want that's not supposed to work that way Tony LaRussa's on the phone Morris by the ways walked film which induce his seasons worst fastball in there first Sammy Sosa on deck it's already six to nothing comes this is the one part of the lineup for the Cubs I don't agree with here I would have a guy hitting in front of Sammy that could do some major damage because you're gonna get good pitches to hit notice what's going on that one fouled away by Miller three into those a good solid professional player but he's an on-base type guy he's not gonna hit you'd like what happened in San Francisco when Richard really again foot front of Barry Bonds he'd said it in his own words he was in the candy spot 203 1 he's going to get something to hit you know what happened when Jeff Kent went in front of Barry Bonds what happened when they arrived in Seattle I'd say the best example when he get in front of Grandma Griffey junior what about Derrick Bell down in Houston at Biggio leading off back wall behind him Johnny was an all-star so sundeck well and he didn't like it when they moved him out of that number 2 spot but there was a pretty high level of comfort there for Derrick and that's fine I think that's the one thing the Cubs could do either put Moises Alou in the second spot or move Sammy to 4th and hit Moe third does that guy is going to get good pitches to hit you want to pull somebody out of a slump I mean put him in front of Sammy Sosa Mike Matthews the left-hander up in the st. Louis bullpen six did nothing they got social on day Bellhorn runs from first [Applause] everybody's safe very short-handed fernandomania votes Juan to keep the inning going for sammy sosa but the chance to do some serious damage that's a tough one there be near the gold but winter last year outstanding again this year defensively just let that ground ball play him and the one thing Morris wanted to avoid was a situation where he had to pitch to Sammy because of the error we're seeing now he really has no choice that Runner passing in front of him here Sosa baseball the strength you think that might have lost sight of it for just a second I think the fact that he was hustling might have gotten beaten because he stayed back on it like he wanted to flip it to second for the easier that's a ball up and away because it was hit like it's going to be a routine play on a fielder's choice now Sammy has enormous power I don't know if he has enough to get it to that young man wearing Sammy's jersey in the upper deck and right field hope springs eternal Sammy's done some amazing things that's for sure that curveball Renteria and that's the inning two men stranded down two holes coming up JD drew Tino Martinez the on Sunday August 25th tspn will celebrate the 25 thousand sports [Applause] [Music] introducing the GMC envoy himself with a midsize SUV engineered to comfortably see seven full-sized adults in a perfect world thousands of buyers could see your home anytime in the real world their century 21 calm I'm pleased to announce century 21 was just awarded to JD Power and Associates Awards for customer satisfaction thanks but I'm just the announcer and that's sweet of you to say century 21 real estate for the real world [Music] many thousand types [Music] 12:52 2250 at Old Navy hey can I write a check for this I just need to see some ID okay so I was in a movie with an extra Eunice whose hairdresser Lane attended Sunday school with father O'Neill who plays racquetball with dr. Sanjay who recently removed the appendix of Kim who dumped you sophomore year so you see we're practically brothers tired of looking for i-beam use the visa chair car to get you in out and on with life I forgot my ID again the Cardinals slugger Albert pool holes leads off into the fourth inning the Cardinals trailing max Amanda the prairies six to nothing expla mint pours in a fastball first right remember Clemente I mean is one loss record is only eight wins 7 losses but if you just look at all of his other statistics you say man this gave them one of the toughest pitchers in the league this year found off the fist and out of play given up one hit tonight in three innings and for the year in a hundred thirty three and two third innings he's allowed 100 four hits I mean that's Randy Johnson life that's tough to hit and he's had more than a strikeout per inning puffing away this by the way this is Clements twenty first start this year he's always been durable not only has he had tough luck this year but just look at his last two mound opponents and sent a Padilla and indeed wrong Matt Morris tonight that's a couple of all-star he's just in the wrong slot right now but dia beat Tom Glavine and the Braves today in Atlanta to or to the county to Albert fools JD Drew's on deck has been a nightmare of a night for Morris who's talking to pitching coach Dave Duncan in the dugout well you also see Chuck Finley their nominee gaining knowledge from what Duncan has to say but then they being a 17-year veteran probably passing something along Schneider lifted foul by a pools on how to play - and - well Clemente you have to forgive him if he's a little giddy with all of his wealth of run support six runs on the board in the fourth inning it's only the fourth time in his outings this year that becomes a sport as many as six runs that's hard to believe most of the games are played at Wrigley Field - - that's why you put most of your left-handed hitters into the lineup against Clemente always one of the league leaders among hit batsmen and it's he's not a head minor this hidden by design there's just a lot of movement to that fastball and when his body gets out in front of his arm that's where that pitch ends up Miller nice pickup Rosie now Miller pretty smooth fielder over there third days I'd say the most amazing thing to me John about that play was poo holes hanging in there we just saw a fastball in his face what's this I mean that is paint and that outside corner with that sweeping slider and he refuses to give he almost came up with a base hit because of one down he drew up now who all denied but again and we're talking this is the show we're talking about a great hitter against against got great stuff I mean they got gave nothing to hit that entire at bat and he still almost got a hit pitching strike down Tino Martinez takes ball or rather Tino Martinez on deck JD Drew takes ball two from Mac Clemente - mint 50 pitches wrong which for him that's a real economy of so not by DeShields I've ever seen drue walked his first time amigo let's go back and take one more look at what Albert Pujols had to deal with that's at about 95 miles an hour that's probably 86 that's that's how you hit 300 that's how you win the Rookie of the Year award and that's how you become an MVP candidate and I don't know if right now anybody is above him if they were to vote right now because of the success that this team has happened his Tino Martinez oh you know I was kind of surprised when they had the all-star game I didn't see that many Cardinals on that team even though they were leading the division Tony LaRussa said that it might have been a blessing in disguise they had gone through a lot and a lot of those guys just simply needed that time off most of them spin it out on the west coast because they opened against the Padres and then the Dodgers after that so it was a nice little vacation for all of them and their families you know really a time where they could they could be together you know also think about what they lost to think about what they have how blessed they were their well that's a good point though and the Cardinals did come back revitalized they've been on the road most of the time since the break in yet they played real well believable team effort just started out on the west coast in LA in the san diego then they went to LA with San Francisco and they went to Pittsburgh from Pittsburgh they went back to San Francisco for the West Coast for games there and then back here to save those for this weekend series after tonight they go on the road again Gino lifts a flyball shallow left Moises that is really Clemente's rolling right along he's retired the last seven in a row top of the fifth inning McGriff coming up I'm a where's Gregor it was black whites and a couple of Mexican guys even if you spoke German ain't understanding he was a Mexican guy now you got Ichiro and Nomo and you know we didn't have all that and now you can watch baseball in 224 countries what I'm when I'm on the road and I can turn on the baseball game it makes me feel like I'm home except nobody's asking me for money or to borrow my car but that other than that I'm on catch a moment you'll never forget what's Major League Baseball on TV if you've been thinking about a dr field and brush mower there's never been a better time to call and get your free dr catalog and video act now and you can get factory direct savings worth up to two hundred eighty nine dollars there's no better time than now to tame overgrown grass and weeds to create beautiful wildflower meadows european-style woodlot nature trails or to clear flammable weeds and brush from around your home call now and you'll also get special savings on all dr lawn mower and snow thrower attachments you can even try out a dr on your own property for 30 days risk-free there's no better way to mow rough overgrown areas and no better time to get all the facts than right now so call now [Music] Tom you haven't changed a bit thanks Brenda do you stay looking so young well I get a little help call 1-800 Hair Club for this free hair loss booklet and read about what causes hair loss what options are proven to work you'll also see clients from all over the country who have found the answer to thinning hair call 1-800 Hair Club today ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball presented by Nextel tonight from Busch Stadium in st. Louis part of the shores of the mighty Mississippi the Cardinals of the captains so far all Cubs unlike the season itself tomorrow night at ABC live at 8 Eastern 7 central at 5:00 Pacific Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus will team up to take on Sergio Garcia and Lee Trevino in the battle at Bighorn eight Eastern seven central five Pacific on ABC tomorrow for more information log on to espn.com Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods teamed up together I just think of how thrilling that's got to be for Tiger you know just to I remember in spring training with the Dodgers one time Sandy Koufax just grabbing a glove and starting to throw on the side just to show some of the young guys the rotation on a curveball and I just got goosebumps watching him I bet I'll bet Tiger and Sergio get that same kind of feeling watching those legends and getting an opportunity to hang with here is Mike Matthews I had to pitch for the Cardinals now in relief of Matt Morris who lasted only four innings only the third time this year that Morris had given up as many as six run to the game Fred McGriff the hitter and he's faced a little kind of different stuff now than what he was seeing from Matt Morris Matthews easing one over the outside for a strike McGriff with two hits in two at-bats and two runs scored against Morris tonight slider low and outside one ball and one strike Morris by the way through 84 pitches to c-max lament trying to stay cool in the dugout Morris through 84 pitches in only four innings he threw 48 of them in three innings after two were down forty-eight pitches in those three innings after two were down with nobody on base and reverted back to the guy that we saw before his last restarts he was overthrowing he just wasn't pitching out there like we know he can win one to McGriff that one is belted in the left side [Applause] Eggman's hurries it back to second the drift is in there with a double man McGriff is having quite a night he almost did a home run here against the lefty his 18th double of the year I tell you what Jonny he's having quite a career he's just 28 RBIs away from 1,500 that's a good pitch to hit right there and a good pitch to drive to the opposite field well he almost got one run closer to that 1,500 RBIs just missing hitting that ball out at dead center by a couple of feet now Moises Alou who had a two-run double to right-center in the first inning for the first two Cubs runs an RBI single in the third so he is two for two three batted in I mean we've seen Moises for so many years we know he's a much better hitter than what he's shown so far with the Cubs is a foul office Allegra's forth shakes it off one ball one strike but you know that is a a couple of hot streaks waiting to come out with Moises Alou this guy was an all-star just last year as a member of the Houston Astros on 1997 he could have very easily been the MVP of that World Series that went to Livan Hernandez but Moises Alou did a lot of things offensively a couple of home runs one the kind that was interesting he and he hit 331 last year 355 the year before in Houston look at the last two years some serious damage being read by a Lou the National League for two straight years there in Vista and the Cubs kind of pencil again those kind of numbers hitting behind Sammy Sosa this year thinking that this was going to be a fun summer too and wonder boy stays well tonight it's been happening they've been clicking all together social just been the set up in a couple of walks that started beginnings Griffin alumina alumina did something he almost never seen and we meet that foul ball off his back leg that's that top hand he gets into every swing his wrists are just so quick more times than not his contact is made well in front of home plate [Music] [Applause] Regina Russa just has two left-handed relievers in his bullpen you're not going to bring Steve Kline the other left-hander and just early in the ballgame but the way the lineup is set for the Chicago Cubs you would think a left-handed reliever would have more success speed find a guy that'll probably pitch later on I sense a little walk this time well the kind McGriff and aloo are five for five now with this walk Matt Morris with two down and nobody on in the first inning walked Sammy Sosa and then Fred McGriff hit this curveball for a base hit then Alou of the first ball he saw a fastball off the outside of 2 run double 3rd inning again two out nobody on Sosa walked in Fred McGriff they said again and then Alou again with the two-out RBI and again a pitch actually not even in the strike zone then it became a huge inning with Corey Patterson launched a three-run homer you know that's just a couple of guys that are flat-out both of the hits coming for McGriff and a Luke came on on different pitches the Grist first hit was off a curveball than a fastball the other way around from losses looking back he probably wished he would have challenged Sammy there are many times did you say that supposed to be that was gonna be heard all around the league this year the guys who've walked Sammy that he was gonna okay back invite you but again that's it is sort of just underscoring the the way things have not gone well who success here tonight one ball one strike one ball two strikes down to Patterson who has popped up and it a lot of baseball left what what concerns you about the Cubs is that you don't hear them trying to do anything to really improve I mean they may it's not over yet and yet the Cardinals it they brought in Chuck Finley they've got Scott rout rolling rumors going around there's lots of things on that side of the bench to be excited about but now the Cubs are a little bit different situation right I mean it's a little it's a little late for them destroyed but I don't know if this fortifying themselves for a pennant race they're built to win right now everyday lineups not getting any younger so you want to go and find a rich chocolate we could go 16 and one down the stretch for him I don't know that they need pitching I think they might need to just kind of fine-tune that offense a little but look where they are Rick but stranger things that happen I mean it's not just the Cardinals that would have to to kind of fall apart look at all those other teams that have to fall apart that's a lot of team as one or two or teams ahead of them there you're saying hey you're built for now you and go out there what are you a season-ticket over at Wrigley Field you know I've got a big warm spot in my heart for them and I just there was a too much talent on that field right now for them not to be a better father than now and and you know what Wrigley Field is sold out it's always packed there and they should have a good product to go out and so you want to get by you wanted to get Scott Rolen then the head comes rolling going to the Cardinals you know he wanted to go to Wrigley see there's talk well he could go to Cardinals as well but Sammy's doing everything he can to try to put this team back into postseason he doesn't need that much help with that rotation that's already in place not my cliff Floyd you're saying you know that the Expo is kind of fallen out of it the cliff Floyd might be available you like to see him go to the camp you know what on Tuesday we'll start spreading that room you get that out I'm singing Wednesday go tribute to Harry Caray when they first called me to do that I said no way and then after the first year I saw Mike Ditka attempt to did you see that yeah I called coach and I said he just took all the pressure in the world off of us and I thought to call the Cubs and said I I know I'm not gonna be that bad it's all for her it's taken out to the ball game to keeping the tradition right Harry Caray's Wednesday you're doing that well Joe Girardi told me that is you have a bad ESPN well they they usually find a way that to zing me every chance they get you know it it's a tribute to Harahan and okay doesn't matter if you are not auditioning [Music] [Applause] thanks ray to DeShields and he didn't like that call he's very unethical really happy that he has an opportunity to play here tonight manager Bruce Kemp saying he wanted to get him into Summit bats so that he would be better suited to pinch-hit which is going to be his role this year well Kazon says it was a little off the corner but with two strikes too close to take me and the second time he was caught looking at a strike three here's Todd Hundley switching around batting right-handed down well 1984 the Cubs acquired you some clean when you went 16 and went down the stretch serendipity every English show together was that the only change they made I remember they made some changes lately spring training manager fortified they're out for you decorously came over earlier that year he was a big part Ron hassey and George Frazier were part of that deal but most of the pieces to the puzzle were in place as is the case with them right now one ball one strike to Hundley to time to on Matthew started the inning in trouble Gary Matthews is the either pastor really remembers Maxine just the oxy love it I mean they weren't catching any fly balls in spring training I got Bobby denier along with Matthews and a couple years before that was that kids man Sandburg they try No the Cubs point of view especially one of the most memorable games in this Susu turkey twice that was the first game that I saw as a cup at Wrigley is that right and I mean you had just been acquired as ago I went to Pittsburgh and we played a few games there when we come back you know the place was packed don't forget where I where I came from the Cleveland and not the Cleveland we know today and then Sanford with the night to tie it tied it later two on two out McGriff at second Alou at first six to nothing the Cubs are leading in the fifth and in the Cubs and Rick Sutcliffe has declared it's not too late for the Cubs and that they should be going for that all these trade rumors we've been hearing about I just think they are hands that was hard [Music] Mike Matthews getting out of this inning but this crowd wants to get back into this ballgame and if he could get an out here put a 0 up offensively there's a lot of talent for the st. Louis Cardinals this this lead is not insurmountable yet we will know from the opportunity I had to work with you last year it was Joe Morgan off at the Hall of Fame and you sat in Joe's chair in Cleveland with the mighty Mariners that's a foul and in and out of the glove of DeFelice so again the runners would have to go back the cameramen stray into 200 but the the Mariners on their way to a hundred 16 wins and they blew a 12 run lead in that game they're had 14 to 2 and Cleveland came back to but at 15 to 14 Kenny loften I think Kenny Lofton scored the winning run and it often just got traded to date in the San Francisco and that was against the big boys last year in Luke Vanilla's bullpen Nelson Arthur Rhodes and Sasaki hit Stefan all of whom knew that they weren't going to be used in that game and they while misses down and in and the bases are loaded meanwhile something else is going on here's bill Peter with an update all right John as we update Oakland and Texas one one and the fifth Kevin Mitch face it Ruben Rivera comes in to one Texas and they then load the bases lid on the inning one out but Juan Gonzales into the DoublePlay so it could have been worse as it is 2-1 Texas bottom six all right we'll keep you posted right here the bases are loaded for Matt Clemente and the 30 first pitch thrown this inning by Matthews this is still the same inning and he threw a couple innings yesterday so probably all that Tony LaRussa will ask out of him is to get one more guy out [Music] back to the string one ball one strike Clemente and sit one back to the pitcher and struck out also missed on a bunt try on a suicide squeeze there is McGriff who doubled leading off this inning Alou who walked and then Hundley who also walk comes have received six walks in this game they have six hints one into two Clemente lament for the as three hits in 40 at that but what about the notion that the Cubs may be just really weren't as good as they looked on paper to begin with I mean you're throwing but you be throwing I they've got some problems defensively in a lot of places [Applause] three men stranded for the cab Edgar rentería will be coming up the candles are down six nothing [Music] get 0% APR financing for five years on most 2002 saturn s-series for restrictions see your Saturn retailer from space treat a lady and her cousin kind of knows from the gym well then you my friend have got a little captain a cold bowl Captain Morgan gold premium malt beverage with a crisp new taste what do you say got a little under 21 moves for you baby this cat is pure evil you see he doesn't want you to win Taco Bell's smashing game he knows when you buy a medium or large drink you'll have a chance to instantly win 1 million dollars movie prices and he just can't allow that he's small and he wants it all don't miss Austin Powers in Goldmember in theaters now think outside the bun baby yeah every year we do this exchange program with our sister city and Bristol England [Applause] [Music] hey aren't you the guys from Bristol [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ESPN Ceci's and bridging sports from a different angle this week who's hot who's not who's got what it takes to wave the silver and black the seasoned making of the Raider at spark 1 in 3 p.m. Tuesday part of the block on ESPN [Applause] Chuck D with our Sunday night theme song Joe Morgan with the week off this is Hall of Fame induction week so Joe exempt with his fellow Hall of Famers for all the festivities Ozzie Smith the former Cardinal great inducted today and one of our favorites Harry Kalas the great voice of the Philadelphia Phillies so one day Ford C Frick award and I don't know who gave the the most memorable speech I'm sure Ozzie did a wonderful job but whatever it was that he said I feel like carrying Harry sounded the best making this speech Edgar rentería the header against Mac cement and the count is three a toe how do you think very sound I want to thank everybody who made this possible today I mean harem defined I did the frozen tundra Green Bay Wisconsin at this time I didn't know you heard that why the left-center field that's gonna be extra bases Michael Jack I've hunted all what a voice oh my goodness train one account to Edgar Renteria found out his first time face headed the right-center into the other way Patterson knocks it down mr. riah nonetheless makes it in the second with a double here they come and I'm not sure it's going to be the offensive st. Louis but it's always their fans one of the best fan bases there is in any sport they can look at the location here a little cutter on the outer half of the plate not trying to do too much but continuing that hot streak in the month of July John you talked about so the 26th double of the year for Renteria and the batter will be D Feliz the pitchers spot up next and Kerry Robinson has come out on deck [Applause] he police gotta Bay City in fact until this inning had the only hit of the game for the Cardinals well as Chuck D says in our song we're going nine it's six nothing it's been all Cubs up till now but we're going nine we're in the fifth inning right now right the third Miller looks back Renteria and DeFelice is gone on one pitch one down and now Robinson will come up by the way as we check out the bullpen this my crew Dale young right-hander who's been outstanding in that Cardinal bullpen Robin - back here for Mike Matthews in the setting but we kind of notes from the umpiring crew today with him they wanted to extend their condolences to the family of longtime American league umpire ed run the father of Paul Runge the national to the gunfire for many years and his supervisor and also ed Runge was the grandfather to Brian run Ronnie who has been an ax and major league umpire these last four years in a drunken who passed away earlier this week was the patriarch of baseball's only three generation umpiring family and the Greg Gibson Mike winters Jerry Davis and Danis augment wanted to ascend upon their condolences and best wishes to the rummies we'd like to do the same thing indeed [Applause] I didn't get a chance to see Edie as an umpire I got a chance to meet him but Paul was one of the best anyway one of those guys that did you know I heard a lot of guys put it this way his ears didn't work he didn't know home team visiting team he saw the pitch and he called it he didn't let the crowd influence which way he went well they must have learned a few things from his dad right hold literally at third down by six - Sammy makes a impress league one hop throw to the play grabbing soon with a pinch-hit stickin out of the top of the order the Cardinals with a a genuine threat going there in the fifth for the first time against Clemente and another reason Jose Oquendo the third-base coach put up the stop sign is because Fernando beam is not really able take a look at this base hit on the high fastball from commit bean is not really a conventional type leadoff hitter he doesn't take a lot of pitches he then that blazing speed he's not going a lot but he can drive in some big runs already 40 RBIs from the leadoff spot that's a lot it's a lot and especially to consider he has only one home run vineya is hitting 311 with men in scoring position Miller plays a very shallow at third [Applause] being here Oh for two of the game is that double fake [Applause] McGriff is on the bag at first holding against Robinson is a very fast runner well down by 6 I mean the Cardinals they do get a couple of these guys home here middle infield DoublePlay that mean you're lifting a foul back out of play the cart Lizza all of their hips have come from the bottom of the batting order Renteria the seventh I said it with a double here DeFelice the apron cheddar had a single in the second Robinson the pinch-hitter for the pitcher had a single dime now the guys are usually do the hitting a camera good better to make sure they don't hit the top half of one of those sink and fast balls Gallifrey - thankful men I mean when things were working right he gets the ball on the ground although he is induced on a one double-play grounder in his last seven starts before tonight because of all the strikeouts that he's had he also has had great success early in games and tends to be more hittable as the game goes along Renteria is bluffing down the line that's wrong do you [Applause] [Music] hit the flyball but not deep enough to take a chance here down by six runs [Music] you look at part of that talent that the Cubs have been so excited about the last few years here's one of the tools of Corey Patterson had to throw that is right on line a lot of arm strength displayed there as you said if it was a tie game or a one-run game maite tested a bad test because that thrill would have had him easily enricher really runs around now Placido Polanco and they need the clutch to out hit here to get anybody home Polanco old for two in the game to lament the first two times through the batting order for the year has seen opposing hitters hit only one 90s a gainst the first four or five innings of every game he pitches a massive slump for the opposition but the rest of the game it is event 270 against this is the third time through the order here for the compass to fix ball for a strike one ball one strike the whole key to the Cardinals now is to get Jim Edmonds to play to home plate in this inning a lot of baseball left but you need to put something on the board and with one swing of the bat that guy right there it could get you real close in so Polanco this could be a a key advantage for the Cardinals night the implemented that double safe to that outside corner one of those sinking fast balls in take it for the team [Applause] I'm out of your strategy I notice has to do with winning getting hit being hit throwing one to hit one boy well that's what when a hard slider down it away the arm strength yeah I mean it comes directly at you for about 45 feet then all of a sudden decides to take a hard left turn Matt Clemente you got a three-hit shutout going here put in a jam what is it first and third two down he's a did lunge out there after 1:00 Titov sharply toward the middle but intercepted by max lemon coming up with the top of the order Sam I'm at the airport you remember that conversation we had the one where I said I don't do any ads Sam that's the only one right ways new desktops are sleeker more powerful and extremely affordable and right now you can get a gateway 500 se with an Intel Pentium 4 processor a 3 CD burner and monitor upgrade for just $6.99 after $100 mail-in rebate call 1-800 gateway for details [Music] what can handlebars teaches about financial relationships you have to reach out to make them work their most valuable when faced with the unexpected the wisdom is everywhere uncommon wisdom is knowing how to apply it Wachovia Securities [Music] more distinctive style 368 improvements the new 2003 discovery it's a whole new way to see the world from land rover the most well traveled vehicles on earth nicely equipped from 34 995 complimentary scheduled maintenance included the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week presented by Nextel brought to you by Gateway where you've got a friend in the business [Music] John Miller along with Rick Sutcliffe Rick in for Joe Morgan is off with the other Hall of Famers for the weekend Cubs 6-part VLEs nothing as we move to the sixth inning Mike crude ale right-hander comes on from the Cardinals bullpen and look at those numbers of 1.37 ER a 20 strikeouts versus only three walks allowed and look at the fact he's just 25 years of age you would expect his role to improve as not only this year goes on but possibly next year him moving into that main setup guy Kerry Robinson who pinch-hit for Matthews the previous picture stays into play left to go then Albert Pujols moves from left field over the third base of trudell will hit in the second spot of the auto vacated by Polanco we do up 9th in the next go-around first ball swinging the leadoff man Mark Bellhorn fouled out of play Bellhorn has struck out flied deep to right and walked Bill Miller on deck and and Sammy Sosa do you have third in the end it comes out front six to nothing in the sixth an off day coming at a good time for the st. Louis Cardinals with Matt Morris only able to go four innings tonight Matthews pitched yesterday and gave him everything he had here tonight Hideo back out there four innings out of him gonna be a little short now the drawn six words in this game and pitch the first game in here on Friday last year's one six so far this year that's a called strike develop morning he's a big ol horse for that ballclub he's the guy they looked to for the veteran leadership well what potential this Fantine has cement fire and carry wood and he comes back to strike it out [Applause] the ESPN game tracks in the first inning max lemon and he came out throwing strikes been shutting the Cardinals down coupled a strikeout to the first any Fred McGriff meanwhile is three for three in the middle of rallies Corey Patterson a three-run homer to kappa four-run third inning Moises Alou with two very big two-out RBI hits a two-run double to the first the first two runs of the game an RBI single to third he drove me the first three runs the two audits before Patterson hit that three-run homer all of that against Matt Morris which was the shop that was but the way Matt Clement has been pitching has not been their pitching coach Larry Rothschild telling me before tonight's game that he has been terrific all year long he could have 13 14 wins if they would it played better offensively and done some things defensively behind him the bullpen has let him down he had needed the bullpen tonight the other pieces have been there Bill Miller takes us from 2 & 1 the count miss cherry wood he got the win here yesterday will you tarpon you gotta leave her get Carrie Maxim Antigua he's pretty good rotation we're going to stand it in line that first camp is not going to be the manager next year there's talk that they're waiting for the labor agreement before they really do anything for the manager position is concerned but if Kim is not the answer which it seems to be right now he is I'm fighting the world is gonna want that job when you can start with that rotation Marc Dreier we started the year in the minor leagues I saw him during spring training ESPN Sunday Night Baseball presented by Nextel it's a hot steamy night in st. Louis the ballpark is crowded it's the Cubs in Cardinals tomorrow night it'll be the Yankees of the Rangers in a hot Arlington Texas Alex Rodriguez who turned 27 yesterday celebrated with a game-ending grand slam and is already even at that young at age 2 making you think about the best ever they should stop who hits with power does everything Alex Rodriguez up against the Yankee's and Derek Jeter two of the great shortstops of the game today will be on display tomorrow night on Monday Night Baseball 8 Eastern 7 central at 5:00 Pacific on ESPN and a pretty good matchup tomorrow El Duque and he's go for the Yankees and Kenny Rogers 11 game winner for Texas could have been with the red but he's still with Texas because that's the way Rick Sutcliffe wanted it it's not buy the night baseball in Cincinnati it's in Texas well I'm gonna be there tomorrow night to talk to him about that - are you upset what if they can come is traded for him they don't need any fits in there finally the pitching is fine alright we've established that offense blast dead last speaking of offense the Cardinals big hitters around Jim Edmonds is war grounded out against Clemente in Edmonds kosecki started a whole new career once he came here to st. Louis from anima lens it is a brand new man that Jim Edmonds of Anaheim was a different guy in town that is a base hit not to Sosa first time any of the first six hitters in the Carville's batting order has habited in this game Jim said the biggest thing he had to work on was the fact that there's no stride involved watch his foot how it stays still you still have to keep the center of your body in the same position it's a lot like that of a boxer where you generate your power from the core of your body your abs and your lower back he used to have that long stride he said he couldn't keep his body back getting two points to the pitcher far too far out in front of off-speed pitches everything has changed for him here [Applause] at Pacific Bell far just become one of the run parks in the National the hit [Applause] taking shot earlier this winter back Australia John just another one of amazing things about what Barry did last year and yet seventy three homers you think well that's that's a you know another in run that was a toughest park internationally to hit homers in and one guy at 73 last year Jeff with Cheryl up in the Cubs bullpen follow distracted pool hole she was struck out and grounded out against Clemente twins at first nobody out in the sixth [Applause] and the fourth inning he got one like that two strikes and then he hit a slider and almost got a basin and and the same kind of thing happened in yesterday's game and immediately both teams were worn a little bit Lacs on that warning here tonight as they should be on the slider and he loops that one foul down the right-field line two strikes who said Jason Simon tachi he was the that you got warned yesterday you look at this stride here he just kind of picks it up and puts it back down you know that that's trident from the waist down kind of reminds me of another great player Edgar Martinez and how quiet he is down below I mean that's one thing to do that you'd have to be real strong from the waist up to get away with that [Applause] does find out that bonds and Pacifico party and 81 games there last year the visiting teams at 49 home runs against the tires visiting teams 49 Homans bonds it 37 there themself almost as many as the visiting teams altogether it's got to be a fun place to pitch in because there's very few guys in a lady that's one guy that it is they can homer to the opposite field left-handed or right - into the pools [Applause] family to a man who's thrown him nothing but nasty stuff you I tell you what there's a lot of young guys you knocked down like Maxim it has done without her pools and they'll give they'll move off the plate a little bit I think he just woke Albert up it might not be something you want to do too much Eggman's it first [Applause] Bellhorn [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the third on what started out like a little play ball it is six to one Chicago with still nobody out that gave away around [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well what should have been two out and nobody on has turned into a disaster because of poor defense again by the cub what's Delino doing there you've got to come across the bag you know what he was doing he was worried about jim edmonds crawling up his back which is the way the Cardinals and Tony LaRussa have been play you've got to take that hit you got to get out there get the baseball and then it's simple to turn the double plays from there he didn't do that and McGriff made a horrible throw a home so Clemente is out it is 6 to 1 in the 6th inning JD Drew coming up with Tino Martinez behind him the Sarah the lefty coming in stable the our mission extra by Nike crave for training yeah but I'm trying out for VAR SI yo Marshall I got it so what do we think of the shoes my god I'll take them the air mission extra by Nike exclusively at sports tender juicy chicken rare walk-ins are wall flatbread type of pepper jack cheese I'd love to bring a diva to try the new grilled chicken flatbread thing which on the new taste menu only at McDonald's technology shouldn't overwhelm you it should open your mind Samsung digital brings it all together with ease [Music] now you're free to do more on your terms while smile it's all here Samsung digital everyone's invited using the wrong waterproofer can cost you thousands don't be taken for a ride - man Thompson's WaterSeal it has the highest level of water protection guaranteed powerful original new advanced Thompson's WaterSeal credit card bill there's interest rates just get a Capital One no hassle car lowest fixed rates you can get so who's getting rich off my credit card [Applause] [Music] someone living large off your interest payments check your mailbox today for Capital One's no hassle card offer great low rates and none of the hassle was in your wallet Oh max LeMat is out of this game and may be wondering why I mean he's given up four hits no runs he gotta get a hit what on another day with another infield might have been a double play ball and I'm a sort of a comedy of errors by the Cubs defense a run scores and now he's out of the game after only 81 pitches thrown I think he's in shock right now because I wouldn't have even looked to the bullpen for activity as well as he was throwing he got into a little bit of a jam in the bottom of the fifth inning he got himself out of it with a great defensive play now he gets a routine ground ball double play it's not turned and he's gone that comes only left-hander is a Clemente look at his face when he sees the call to the bullpen being made you know you never want to show another teammate or manager but I can't blame him for that I mean he could not have done any more and he just had he has to be in shock right now he was cruising in this ballgame Jerry woods over there to talk to him about it but he's not hearing anything right now he's just right now and then you want a guy that doesn't want to come out of a ballgame and that's what Mack laments all about [Applause] well a very strong performance by Clemente in the end mark Bellhorn they would not play much shortstop in the big leagues he's not the regular shortstop and you made a very good point about delino deshields coming off the bagging and catching that ball but also I mean what that could have been a double play and bell rings is standing back on his heels waiting for that ball to get to him and you wonder you know where's Alex Gonzalez I mean he's he's able to play and they have a 6 run lead that is a base hit the Cardinals pull holes in to score Diggy for second is Drew and he notes it easily [Applause] [Music] those first hit of the game and his 43rd RBI of the year I tell you what with Matt Clemente I think you just lit a fire underneath these st. Louis Cardinals I know drew had bad numbers against the Cerro Tino does not have good number Latino can't wait to get into the box right now that's a mistake fastball up and out over the plate driven into the opposite field and these guys are hungry they want more he know it takes a strike you strike pitch to Drew hit for his RBI hit still nobody out two runs in I mean that's just the odd part of it is [Applause] was still not looking very hittable and there's a lot of baseball left you've got to get more out of your starting pitcher than there [Applause] even down by 4 runs are productive at 40 no moving drew over the third-base with only one out I mean this play was just messed up all the way around it started with a guy who's only had six start to sheer at shortstop what's he doing why is he staying back why not come and get that baseball I'll tell you why he's not used to that position why is the second baseman backing up to right field now how about this all right they've messed it up as bad as they can look what happens here all right they're hustling on that part but the throw was not near on time or on target he should have been out by a long ways instead Hundley come up in front of the plate just kind of knocked it down where he should have been in the line catching the ball putting a tag on well here is Renteria with a runner at third base and the count is on one Renteria only one hit in tenth lifetime advance for him against for Sarah but Renteria right now had done one of the top flutters in the National League he is hitting 367 with runners in scoring position at the start of this day that was third best in the entire league and he's hitting over 400 in the altogether Dru's scores and they have cut the Cubs lead in half Renteria does it again [Music] you know what I think of right now is is Tino Martinez and even though he made an out he made a good out he advanced a runner to third base all Renteria had to do with the infield back was put the ball in play on the ground he would have an RBI he did just that because he didn't have to do too much Tino advancing runners I mean this team they do things right offensively and defensively to cub to simply go so three runs are in still only one out deep release and that's ball one or bullpen activity going for the Cubs down Kyle Farnsworth the tall hard throwing right-hander is I would imagine Alex Gonzalez's up and getting loose too we weren't told that he was murder anything he's an outstanding shortstop first-base team [Music] would still be in the game [Music] ferments gonna be in the manager's office when this game [Music] [Applause] to be Feliz [Music] Carrie little antenna to the res on deck part of this from those games point of view you've only got the one left you've gotta pick your spots when you're going to use that one lefty the most efficient manner to get the best use out of it yeah but you start thinking about it closer it looks like he started to losing I didn't see that there so third is Renteria double 4d for these three runs are in with only one man out no end in sight here in the sixth inning you know for cero's pizzas really aren't that bad right now that's a good off-speed pitch down and in it's just that this team has a fire lit underneath them the fans are on their feet they want more and in all probability with this Cubs pin they'll get more [Applause] got the left-handed hitting Kerry Robinson Cavanaugh and another lefty being here behind him but the right hand of Farnsworth will be summoned from the bullpen for years the championship has eluded parents trover but this year strober guess overcome the brutal conditions and mental anguish of 15 days on the tundra his dream is about to become reality [Applause] [Music] McGwire these days join Stuart Scott and me Rich Eisen SportsCenter after baseball on ESPN it was six to nothing campus it is now six to three Cubs and the card goes with three runs home also have runners at second and third and one out Kyle Farnsworth comes in runs with who spent considerable time this year on the disabled this he had a huge year last year for the pros and he's a guide to getting a strikeout in a spot like this he's got a tremendous amount of I was just surprised with the timing Bruce Kim coming to the man I thought if he waited Toyota Rousseff might have pitched it for Robinson with Eli Marrero then you burn up a Kargil flare bring in the right-handed expansion for 30 seconds and let Tony LaRussa make his move then you counter that move I finally came out a little soon [Applause] Gary Robinson came out as a pinch hitter in the flippity and single they said here could make this a one run the inside back over the Tony Russa didn't make him well this might have been the way for Bruce came to go massara we've given up three hits in the four batters that he faced a ball no strike the count [Applause] I mean get the stuff and the only guy I mean James Rodney Richard made slider as hard as farmers [Applause] just becoming more and more talented players velocities getting hired [Applause] another lefty on deck j-john said boy it was close [Applause] quite enough late movement plate umpire Greg Gibson saw for everyone account at Turia and third DeFelice on second and feedback except the third baseman [Applause] with the leadoff man Xenia coming up and handled easily and his first three at-bats the opportunity to go five plus innings tonight that's just 15 outs and even I can do the math to tell you that you got 12 left and [Applause] [Music] face forehead is [Applause] got hits against him with two lefties coming on [Applause] motivation all four three a swaggin language does not often hit home runs hit only one this year with the bases loaded that is the hard slider again [Music] I mean rotten ends got his smite of the sometimes you throw 91 92 93 miles an hour but Jason Isringhausen and this Cardinal bullpen did you see Eduardo Perez out on deck now with a pitcher do of nation earlier this week in San Francisco was thrown his slider 8990 and just destroy people it is Isringhausen of the Cardinal bullpen they'd like to have a shot to get him in in the ninth inning because ever been the good things have continued to happen Oh into the game ninety-eight [Applause] you know when you talk about Nana living housing obviously closers I think that's the future for Farnsworth possibly as early as next year 1 & 2 the count [Applause] doesn't know where it's going the three men on Renteria DeFelice and over first place Robinson Robinson is the possible tyrunt and he's a very fast runner [Applause] the country to get [Applause] breaking ball he's had a lot of confidence Farnsworth in that splitter seems to this point he's been able to throw it closer to this Drive zone then that fastball he's displayed [Applause] Renteria scores everybody else moves up a bag it is six to four Chicago John they're just doing everything right they play good defense they put the ball in play when they have to they advance runners and when they have to run the bases right they do so so with a tremendous effort here but everything played perfectly by the base runners for the Cardinal you don't know if Sammy is going to get it or not he's doing everything he possibly can almost made a spectacular play I mean baseball tonight was ready with the webs in there but take a look at Robinson right there look at where he's at look at what he's doing now he sees the ball get loose he put himself in a position where if it was caught he could get back to first not get doubled up but once it came loose back toward that speed you talked about John was so important he turned it on a base hit for Vania and the inning continues eight men have batted for the Cardinals in this hitting and seven of them have reached base and here is Eduardo Perez now pinch-hitting for true Dale [Applause] Pynchon home run here against the comes into the Hall of show the shears dippers and the inning is over but the Cardinals with four on the board right back in the game we head to the late innings on Luke coming up six to four covers it begins here for the MLB authentic collection we are jackets jerseys and like me caps and we lead lives for some it's the big leagues and the prestige of television exposure for others the gift at just 29.95 call now the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week presented by Nextel next hell how business gets done and in part by sit Rona Stoli she is a trauma premium Oh beverage tonight we drink sit Rona for more than 100 years or more than a hundred years 111 years it comes and cradles of it having at it and looking at perhaps a great comeback for the Cardinals I can't get my dad to like the Cubs I can't get my son to like the Cardinals that's the way it goes so the guy who wrote the sign which way does Neely and that's what you're talking about this rivalry well that's where those two it's a heated rivalry but at the same time all in good fun it is in all of the years that I was a part of it on both sides of the field I never saw a fight at Wrigley or here at Busch Stadium once in the stands and that's just a true complement to the great baseball fan a new feature is decline just lifting out of the car Moises Alou the hitter with Corey Patterson on deck as we start to settle in the Cubs had led six to nothing but the Cardinals with a four-run sixth inning rally Alou is driven in three runs in this game Macduff the single first place on fire a loon one ball one strike [Applause] to me this just tells you that what Tony LaRussa thinks is possible on this game and that's for his team to win you don't greatings deep fine it down is that your 8:30 guy when you're ahead in front of the Isringhausen which I suppose is one of the reasons lines in right now and the Cardinals had their big guys up in the six tonight to get it started it was Edmonds who hauls and drew and those same three are due to lead off in the last half of this any so they'll be coming after the Cubs again with the same sluggers and I promise you if they were honest with it they would tell you they'd rather face anybody then Matt Clemente tonight he was that good a mystery why he was taken out after he got in the book with the right shortstop in there he got of all the could in a double play more Corey Patterson hit a three-run homer in the third that is a fair ball off the boxy Tralee Madison is great speed eases into second and then she's second hit now he'd been slumping throughout the month of July but tonight a three-run homer and now a double Madison was hitting 158 for the month before tonight I've not seen a lot of down I tell you what he's everything they said he was and it could possibly be I mean we've seen a tremendous arm we've seen great speed we've seen power this could be a real good player for Chicago Cubs for a long time to count in Paterson and second if the Cubs trying get some offense gone again here not DeShields is due up Cubs have a adventure for the right-handed hitters to whom they could go though DeShields coming out for himself here the fact that he wasn't after it really made us think that he wasn't coming one out in the runner at second base [Music] Juan Cruz up and they both had now for the Cubs are right-handed usually hit hardly on deck then the pitcher spot she's backs away Delano has walked and stolen a base and twice been caught out on strikes tonight six to four the are leading the Cardinals on walling Australians it wouldn't surprise me one bit client is able to get the line around I did intentionally walked after what needs to make make a mental picture they can get far without him bacon up well he's a tough day I mean if he throws strikes he's gonna be tough day miss Farnsworth John or the cat to the shields a weekend they stole one of the most unlikely comebacks in fact it was the the biggest comeback in a seventy-six years in the big leagues 12 runs down a repeat the Mariners time rivals the Cubs down six to nothing in the sixth inning of a at least come part of the way back and they did it all at once the four runs all scoring in the six inning history and three of two to the she knows that was one of the most exciting games that has a player fan broadcaster or whatever that I've ever been a part of watching that come back I mean that was against some of the best relievers in the game and just some great at-bats all the way down the line well the Indians not only were 12 runs down 14 to 2 at one point in the ninth inning with two down they were still down 14 to 19 I don't know what was beyond the mountains Ryland 3m2 the counter dishes [Applause] meanwhile stuff's going on in Texas here's an update with Bill pedo all right John two out for Oakland they're down one in the eighth but two on from a guilty heart I last thought it was the shortstop for the Rangers Alex Rodriguez tonight Tejada the shortstop for Oakland three-run home run Oakland goes up for two two catches up in the bottom of the eighth and how there's been the man tomorrow night Alex Rodriguez and the Rangers up against the New York Yankees Jason Giambi the former Oakland slugger now with the Yanks Derek Jeter and company and an Alfonso Soriano what a year he's having the Yanks in Texas El Duque Orlando Hernandez against Kenny Rogers he's been the Rangers best on Monday Night Baseball on ESPN 8:00 Eastern 7:00 central there's a ball outside to Todd Hundley he's grounded out to third flied out to shallow right center Cam's have had at least one runner reached scoring position in six of the seven areas tonight there is angel echeverria [Music] [Applause] another player used off the bench for the Chicago Cubs they've already gotten into the bullpen twice it's like they're going to have to at least one probably two more times Cardinal bullpen busy again it had a great approach this whole inning that gets deep-lined not chasing that breaking ball out of his own Dave beers up in the bullpen the right-hander June 1 the count to hunting fundly as a right-handed hitter he's only had 30 or let's see 29 at-bats issue in 4 hits or 138 average [Music] [Applause] kinda pictures in six in the third innings too Morris Matthews crude a Lynott client have thrown a hundred fifty two pitches [Applause] tonight still 90 degrees here in segments Addison is he'd stood second DeShields who runs real avid furnace [Applause] he did he's shown real good patients that hold it back until the 3-1 pitch just a little over-aggressive trying to do too much this ball was clearly off the outside corner from the very beginning never did get to the part of the plate well now that might start these runners and you both these guys have great speed what do you think just to stay out of pinch it and flip it sir there they go travelled the same art as the famous st. Louis Gateway Arch it arced its way right over the top of the arch there see that arch will you leave my telestrator alone Sean never lets me touch it huh I can't and never get my hands on the telestrator with children just make sure you clear when you're done okay thank you use it anytime I went berserk there for just a second it's Jose anyway in fact on my little monitor here it said they just now it's it's perfect it said Joe all that I don't care the cheat you're sitting in yeah don't get too comfortable I'm not I'm a fan poker I know where I belong I just appreciate the opportunity buddy they were running on the last bridge Patterson they're in second number 20 if she prefers they're going again and then that's another 500 DeFelice is going to come out and have a talk with a saying look who's make one good picture you get this guy I could throw somebody out the Lionel DeShields had no jump whatsoever there I got to think that that throw is gonna go to second Delino at one time could run with Tory Patterson but but not anymore who's Kim checking his line of cards here things started going bad when he went to the went to his bullpen day started making moves in the 16th there's Patterson at 2nd after she has 15 steals this year is is shields at first there they go [Music] and that will get DeShields to ferry [Music] so pretty good at-bat there by Todd Hundley only his fifth right-handed hit of the year only his second RBI right-handed of the year there are a lot of good things offensively than it happened tonight for the Chicago Cubs Sammy Sosa has been patient scored a couple of runs McGriff with three hit boys this Alou has been hot and now the same thing happens with Todd Hundley he hit a home run yesterday in a cub victory he adds an RBI here this evening [Applause] now Farnsworth with the run home left in there that for himself here now earlier in a spot somewhat similar to this with the she lives at third and one out nobody had first in that instance Bruce Kim the Cubs manager put on the suicide squeeze and Clemente watered at it and missed I just looked for a simple sacrifice here to keep Farnsworth in the game and then one of your most assistant offensive players mark Bellhorn we'll come up with a couple of guys in scoring position hopefully Tony LaRussa right now to talk to client about it and you just see you know I mean Tony weighted them to see what the final mood was going to be how he's got a couple of options he can stay with client in his situation here I would go with whichever reliever is the best fielder [Applause] this copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of the Commissioner of baseball to may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without express written consent and you can now take part in the Major League Baseball history by voting for your most memorable moment at any major league ballpark or online at mlb.com you get to decide because those moments aren't surely in the eye of the beholder belonging to all baseball fans which one do you think is the most memorable let your voice be heard at mlb.com his Farnsworth LaRussa chatted up Steve Kline about it Farnsworth wails away at it oh no on yeah three-run lead you're playing with house money in a long look down at third base now to see if anything's changed in the mind of manager Bruce Kim I thought Richie Sexson was standing up there for a second slider down it into one ball one strike again no sign of a bunt he's about the same yeah hi does a section sports that it follows the game stay tuned for that stay tuned for this Mike those are coming up with their big sluggers the last half of the city but right now the adding more no sooner did the Cardinals get back into the game of the four runs six then come right back and put one on the board here in the seventh and threatened to get more the shields and 301st fines was only had wanted that this year kinky [Applause] is a richer section if I was going to talk about tall guys with quick bets I'd probably go section before Farnsworth you know it's kind of like a lot of guys hitting the golf ball I mean right up to the point where they start their swing they look like a lot of people right now right now he looks like sexy jutsu p7 mark Bellhorn he has 15 home runs issue he's on deck Elmore is third on the Cubs 4 home runs the second basemen with more [Music] just yet and rivalry renewed the Giants and Dodgers in San Francisco for the weekend here the Cubs and Cardinals last weekend the Red Sox and Yankees were having at how about what's going on with Anaheim and Seattle - man Rose of the south [Applause] here's DeShields with the eighth run of the game of the cup so they'd come back responding to the Cardinals four with two of their own so far this might be is this bad is I have seen Steve flying there's just not any velocity there there's no command he hasn't gotten a breaking ball over the last two hitters those of that he's got to throw fast balls he's got to throw him in his own and even Kyle Farnsworth in his second at-bat of the year able to drive in a run Mike DeFelice had to toss decline in frustrated his Bellhorn now Farnsworth as you mentioned and only been to the plate one other time this year in his career he was for 450 my comedy inside basketball Bellhorn is struck out flied deep to ride walk and struck out again bolsa 3 Bellhorn came into the game hitting 371 as a right-handed hitter what style and to react Raveena [Applause] not what the Cardinals were hoping for two runs for the Cubs there back ahead by four eight to four with Edmonds poo holes and then JD Drew coming up the big guys coming up with the Cardinals again [Applause] [Music] come on huh just tell me what soaps you want this isn't really my kind of place well the actress use the stuff I got at the hotel but that's next towel right yes how about just some soap scented so that cell phone with the walkie talkie right yeah so cool you should do their commercials commercials I want to be a serious actress unfortunately you've got to let me know the night is full of choices choose wisely [Music] Stolichnaya citron a premium all beverage tonight we drinks it Rona [Music] answer the call CEO Jaguar retailer for specialist in finance offers during the Jaguar London Calling sales event ends September 3rd [Music] nice is a cold co Jaguar retailer for specialties and finance office during the Jaguar London Calling sales event ends September 3rd this is your appetite talking how about something tasty introducing Arby's market fresh ultimate BLT ooh the bread is so soft all that bacon soap every and those toppings so fresh Arby's new market fresh ultimate BLT the L T's made fresh to order it'll change the way you think about fast food give in to your grown-up tastes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Jack buck at Wrigley Field and they just played that on the jumbotron screen here between innings and as the the fans at Busch Stadium sang along with Jack one more time [Applause] forever the voice of the Cardinals the krinkle bullpen he's remembered John Francis Bach Jay at the did we miss it jim edmonds to hitter one ball and one strike and here and say this over the weekend with all of the highlights remember the great career of Ozzie Smith 15 years with the Cardinals and as Ozzie himself has said in many an interview the bat was the game-winning home run he hit left-handed against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1985 League Championship Series and cause that home run is for remembered by that college that go crazy home run here in st. Louis I know you had to have some great memories Jack and he was he a guy that that you listened to growing up well Jack buck to me was Monday Night Football on the radio [Applause] broadcaster on CBS with the World Series in the early 90s [Applause] here in st. Louis one of just a baseball broadcaster a sports broadcaster he was st. Louis leading citizen and here at Busch Stadium commemorated with a statue out front of the ballpark it was unveiled about four years ago tell you what he did the most amazing thing I never saw a baseball field on Edmonds Edmonds now 1 for 3 with a walk in this game one away last year after September the 11th we didn't know if and when sports of any kind was going to continue and ESPN asked me to drive down from Kansas City traveling and everything was was confusing and I gladly did what none of us knew what we were doing we didn't know if the time was right or not and Jack walked out there and asked the crowd exactly the same question and there were so many people here but their response let us know that the time was right and then he read the poem that he had written that very day for that occasion when he talked about now it's time for us to do what our forefathers have done for us you know protect that freedom I'll just anybody I'll never forget here in st. Louis they already knew about jackpot as Jack buck the broadcaster Jack buck the great citizen of st. Louis and his legacy for the rest of the country from that memorable night here at Busch Stadium great American he inspired not just baseball fans here in st. Louis but a nation that had been attacked just a few days before and I'm pleased that that is part of his national legacy you know another thing to up living Jenna that's it I totally mean this a lot like you he was one of the best banquet speakers I ever heard I mean you're you're terrific out I mean he he was an incredibly funny guy he had a radio show from his house the Bucs would have an open house on Christmas Day as the most listened-to program on the radio every year in st. Louis and everybody would stop by the Bucs outs and go on the radio with Jack that Christmas Day is part of the tradition here JD drew the hither than she called strike and it's 2 & 1 now also I mean and Jack was a great employee at the radio station KMOX you know if the guy would go on vacation and they needed somebody do a hockey game Jack would do the hockey game talk-show host would go out of town for a week Jackie go on and do the talk-show talking politics I was there in Las Vegas when he roasted his buddy Harry Caray Oh JD goo just started this year who made the leap for it and who gets his second hit of the game stay tuned ow SportsCenter right after the game Rich Eisen and Stuart Scott is standing by and they're gonna try to answer the question where is Mark McGwire whither Big Mac and the Creed will host the plays of the week and more on Lance Armstrong [Music] but one place Mark McGwire has not been has in person but here in st. Louis we wanted to do a big weekend for him Mac just wanted to let this team get its own identity first said there's plenty of time for that later Tino Martinez over three Wallace trying you know has struck out flied to shallow left and grounded out to second eight to four that Cubs lead the Cardinals the crinkles mounting had come back in the sixth inning with a four run rally for the Cubs came right back at two of their own in the seventh that is huge so Kyle finds worth restores ordered to the proceedings for the caucus Miller that Sosa coming up on Sunday August 25th the SPN will celebrate the 25,000 sports up bro train a lizard sweet hay tastes great yeah feels even better I think you're trying too hard so be yourself the best is yet to come [Applause] introducing the GMC envoy yourself but you ain't seen it for the midsize SUV engineered to comfortably see seven full-sized adults to count men babe won't it be found this race brought to you by Visa the official card of the NFL and the only card accepted at the Olympic Games [Music] end the visa Triple Crown [Music] and it's for good we're also the official card of NASCAR visa it's everywhere you want to be Dave you Xeon processors so we don't get locked into proprietary technology and that cuts costs Dave we can use you an accountant find out how you can cut costs across your enterprise easy as Dell call or go online today top of the eighth-inning from sale it was 8:00 to 4:00 the Cubs lead the Cardinals de Vere's the fifth Cardinal pitcher of the game you see his numbers but a while ago we were talking about Jack buck it is the day of Ozzie Smith's induction into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown Ozzy's greatest moment as a hitter in the 1985 League Championship Series the wizard hit a game-winning homer Jack buck at the microphone on the radio with quarks one in the right [Applause] crazy folks crazy [Music] [Applause] [Music] I mean a great moment for the wizard now in the Hall of Fame and the jackpot the Hall of Fame broadcaster capture the moment Phil Miller leading off against veers and the right-field line but Tino Martinez cannot catch up to it it hops into the seats for a souvenir I think that's the one thing that I don't think Ozzy gets enough credit for is the type of offensive player he was he was so good defensively that it really took away from he was right in the middle of that offense hitting second with Vince Coleman in front of him he always took pitches but I mean he got to be good offensive exactly exactly early in his career that was not the case but there was a 10-year period there where this guy contributed I mean it might not have been driving in a run or but he took pictures to let Coleman get into scoring position he'd hit ground balls to second to get him to third I mean Tommy Herr was a great player but he wasn't really at a hundred RBI type guy until Ozzie just kind of put those RBIs he's dead Oh rod for Bill Miller the can of a bounce the Cubs have been looking for all season long nine to four check ago [Applause] you know in a couple of guys from Tony LaRussa's bullpen that are normally dependable Klein got roughed up in the seventh inning and now Vera's gives up a leadoff homer to Bill Miller an outstanding effort on the part of JD Joo timed it perfectly had it closed his eyes hit the wall gone I hate he did the tough part getting there he just didn't do the simple part holding on to that baseball is a great effort [Applause] sammy sosa now well the Cubs have two homers one by Patterson one by Miller Sosa McGriff Alou homerless so farmer the Cubs who scored nine runs anyway in his own - in Ozzie Smith when he hit that home run left-handed it was such a shock he had 2970 regular-season at-bats as a lefty and had never hit a home run almost 3,000 advance never home runs on the left side until that one which was a game and [Applause] go on to hit five left-handed homers in his career including two in his final year by z96 [Music] take a look at this one more time there he is alright but you could see almost his turn his head down as if the Braith insell for the collision with the wall a split second before he had the baseball in his glove there's disappointed when you hit in front of Sammy Sosa's we're gonna get a lot of good pitches to hit we took advantage of socially he's not often take advantages he's hitting 233 games this year where he hit in front of so so he been hitting directly in front a source of more often than any other comes him I just don't think he's the type of guy for that spot even if he gets the base on ball which he's good at doing we're still not gonna fish the Sammy mr. sang at the all-star game so I put a guy up there that can hit 30 home runs like rich Aurilia Jeff Kent [Music] and hard-hitting the fourth behind Barry Bonds you see in front associate is a game tonight oh the three in this one and the Corey Patterson actually [Music] directly in front of sammy sosa the Miller even then he goes over help didn't quite make it over the wall on its own steam miss Corey Patterson is at one tonight hitting six in the order the Jeff Kent Dusty Baker the transmeta decision boswellia base all the time with tech coming up Kent's high change it up a little bit see what happens and Kant started getting on unbelievably at 4:52 hitting just in front of bonds for 17 years you explain this to me kent and bonds also got hot at each other doing it there in San Diego they did and it seemed like that was kind of something that the club needed just to get it out in the air you know get it over with they got hot right after here is moisei saloon I mean after veers gave up the homer to Miller then the sluggers came up and he struck out both Scioscia and McGriff now Alou he's having a big night a two-run double an RBI single he's 2 for 3 with a walk and three batted in on the inside first strike one ball one strike last two at-bats for Sammy and McGriff were like some of the bats early in the year not particularly Sammy but more so the Crime Dog was trying to do too much with the ball out of the park six outs they're up by five runs so why not go up there and take some big swing if you come up empty so be it but that happened it allowed early in the year he's turned it around he turned it around before Moises Alou still trying to really get it turned around on a consistent basis still won in front of sluggers that the Year Roger Maris it is 61 homeys it's well known that he never was walked intentionally and hitting in front of Mickey Mantle 20% of these [Applause] and Mary said only 174 no back that's a 115 at-bats he had when mantle was knocked behind him and he hit 174 with seven home runs which is startling friends at the Alliance Bureau came up with that good for us he hit 293 with mantle Hilton behind them in 54 Homer's average one homer every 8.8 advance without mantle behind him 174 and one homer every sixteen and a half effects you see the [Applause] if you like the working off and says hey the only guy can protect Sammy Sosa in the Milan is Sammy Sosa [Music] he could probably do it 9:00 to 4:00 the Cubs lead last of the eighth Tejada with a three-run home run in the eighth since then they've added six more Dave justice here after eight Durham the new Lee acquired one drove in to justice two at home run it's 12 now Wow an eight run ninth inning for the Athletics or they're still batting leading 12 to 2 there in Texas thanks Bill here the Cardinals are down 9 to 4 rubber match of this three-game series the Cubs of the come to town intended to a rough up the Cardinals and so far they've been doing it they won yesterday 73 back at Kerry Wood tonight 9:00 to 4:00 and said you're in Tahrir now for the one ball one strike Cameron Turia has doubled in singles last to advance 2 for 3 in the game now hitting three eleventh of the years and well over 400 for the month of July slider and [Music] stay tuned now after the ballgame still to come a his Sports Center Rich Eisen Stuart Scott having a little extra time to really polish up tonight's trip I would miss preseve won several awards for tonight's show and they're going to answer the question I'm hoping where's Big Mac and the place of the week and more on Lance Armstrong when Armstrong wouldn't litigates incredible athlete well Rich Eisen would know where Mark McGwire and what he's been doing both good friends on one to Mike DeFelice is singled and doubled in this game two for three but there he is and so there's a lot of those here though it's a Big Mac impersonator wow that's just like Elvis now again I'll tell you what he he he still is doing things for this city he's the one that convinced Jim Edmonds and here everything has changed in Jim Edmonds career Edmonds unsure is a big part of the reason Chuck Finley's here longtime teammates there woody Williams Big Mac was the one that really brought a lot of this team together Chuck Finley we received under three runs per game and his last 15 starts with Cleveland has been given 16 his first two starts as a cardinal woody Williams 13 and 4 since he put on the car to a uniform we don't really he came over here San Diego last year it was like they've gotten somebody else and he carried it right on through to the postseason what he's played catch the last couple of days Tony LaRussa was telling you and I good news on Garrett Stevenson he had a bullpen session today so they could get well from within getting their rotation back together Stevenson pitched a simulated game earlier this afternoon he really watched the lines of chunga LaRussa Dave Duncan and Walt Jocketty I think they said he threw 43 pitches his rights recall by dark our camera crew was able to capture Stevenson pitching his simulated game just take a look at the arm behind the back that's what you look for if all of that extension is there but that laying down a bunt on a guy in a simulated game who was that [Music] I don't know but he's playing to win ever hear that stir but I cop Lane in an old-timers game and he's like 70 years old he says to the catcher sis listen we move back a little bit because I don't want to hit you with my baton I just you know I don't want nobody should get hurt and an old-timers hey so the gang go back three or four feet and calmly down the fine Fred McGriff and Robinson is retired for the first time since he entered the game back in the fifth inning so far North shutting down the Cardinals we go to the ninth inning Corey Patterson coming off Cubs lead 9 to 4 [Music] honey they got any kumquats I love kumquat I don't know what com quartz looked like but I got some great looking Tomatoes and we need Tomatoes no tomatoes they got Kiwis they got some red bags here no sorry I'm not him what about bananas I know I get that oh you ma'am I'm sorry on television in commercials hey pal I don't do commercials sorry as we see on this five bananas too many to get brown you [Applause] [Music] all right we're going 9 and here it is the ninth inning de Vere's in his second ending it worked now having delivered a strike to Corey Patterson this is inside one ball one strike this is John Miller along with Rick Sutcliffe Joe Morgan involved with the Hall of Fame festivities have been Cooper Stan Joe is not only a Hall of Famer but he is [Music] the 21st century directing these big honcho the last time you and I worked together was in Cleveland we still want to remind you that was the night that Cleveland made that comeback 12 runs down but they were still down by five in the 19th with two out tonight they just having the Cardinals are throwing like Tao Farnsworth has been throwing tonight he has flat-out just been unhittable and really the key to the ballgame Matt Clemente was cruising but his his night ended a little bit earlier than he had planned on Asaro struggled barnesworth came in and gave up a little bloop to bean him and he got the ground ball double play and has just cruised from that point on there's a Tom Gordon Flash Gordon Delino DeShields to hit it out you know you talking about Joe being a big guy last year during the playoffs Joe got all of the hats from the Yankees and you and I went to the fire station I just I'll never forget the look and all of those guys eyes you know just seeing a hall-of-famer like him and the stories we were all telling and it just such a good guy I don't know how many people know this side of it but you know I start talking about how I know you know that's all the firemen you know I just can't believe this game it I mean you're just you're really at all aren't you they're looking at me like any big we met baseball players before and they're looking and I kind of dragged it out and I went y'all just can't believe that Joe Morgan's not any taller than this I mean that you know was a tough situation and a tough one for us to think of of something to do people just wanted to smile remember Joe Torre during the World Series saying the fans of New York just needed a place to go screen and baseball provided that baseball indeed was it wasn't just a cliche baseball offered something to the city of New York terrible times tomorrow night on ABC live at 8 Eastern 7 central 5:00 Pacific Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus team up will take on Sergio Garcia and Lee Trevino in the battle at Bighorn ABC tomorrow live 80s through 7:00 central to Don Todd Hundley the hidden rivers found about what we got on the fire truck I mean that the alarm goes off right they take off and they stop and invite us to go with him well you know fortunately was was a false alarm but but what did you tell him dear him he said guys when we go on TV radio tonight it's not gonna be a false start laughs oh that was that was great just to kind of you know do something to to brighten their day each one of those fire houses we visited there as was the case with just about every firehouse in New York applause seven to ten [Applause] [Music] it makes the grab three up three down inning for the Cubs here in the ninth down the last chance for the Cardinals it is 9 2 for Chicago don't let minimis swinging moves fool you he doesn't want you to win Taco Bell's smashing game he knows when you buy a medium or large drink you'll have a chance to instantly win 1 million dollars see Austin Powers in Goldmember now think outside the bun baby I was growing up it was black whites and a couple of Mexican guys even if you spoke German later I'm standing he was a Mexican guy now you got Ichiro and Nomo and you know we now this is Rich Eisen later on the next SportsCenter things get heated up between the Sox and Orioles Plus where's Mark McGwire these days join Stuart Scott and me Rich Eisen SportsCenter after baseball on ESPN nine to four the Cubs lead the Cardinals ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball is the last of the night this time Flash Gordon to face the top of the Cardinal batting order Gordon who had been the closer and was supposed to be this year but he got hurt and they went out and traded for Alan's taketh from Florida and Gordon is now back and he's thrown well in Southland Seca still is the closer right down with Farnsworth so cero Gordon now from Sega they seem like they're pretty good shape of the bullpen as well as the starting rotation now they are now that Farnsworth and flash are back there for a while all kinds of bad things were happening for this team from like the sixth inning on because of that camp where we were showing the pretty poor over we were short-handed [Music] [Applause] [Music] Fernandez we knew the hitter Fernando is 1 for 4 in the game jim edmonds girl third of the evening that's what I think it would I think it's not I mean when he first came up with Kansas City he threw 94 miles an hour whatever but he threw a couple of percent of the time and have a hard time controlling his fastball [Applause] wanted to the convenient and a bad night here for the cart moose down nine to four they go on the road after this st. Louis he's heading to Florida again 3 in Miami starting Tuesday but thinking to face Florida usually you go to face guys like Josh Beckett and AJ Burnett they got to go to Atlanta next weekend and we're gonna check in with the Cardinals again next Sunday night not you personally I know you're busy everybody's back I'll go back to my Monday night and they've along [Applause] Lavinia is aboard living sport is a base hit for Fernando Fernando Vania will say thank you very much and maybe pick up the next dinner check for the official score this is not a base hit I mean there's a tough part he gets to it but Bellhorn just doesn't look real smooth out there as a shortstop I know he played that position a lot as a minor leaguer but he just looked really uncomfortable his time he's not been good charging possible DoublePlay balls and and that he did the tough part getting to that ball the easy part was the throwing that's what got away from Sylvania czibor down the attention to Miguel Cairo he's been the Cardinals top pinch-hitter one of the best and the national image at 11:00 pinches this year at 37 try [Applause] the big hitters around Jim Edmonds on deck then Albert pool hole JD drew Tino Martinez if the kernels have a long way to go on this went down nine to four there's Edmunds on deck congratulations again to Ozzie Smith inducted into the Hall of Fame today the longtime partner also to Harry Tyler Steve great voice of the Federation a14 Frick award and Joe Falls a used to reach Joe Falls the great sports economist from Detroit I used to read him in the Sporting News as a kid that's the ultimate right their Hall of Fame go to the count Ozzie Smith is the sex hall-of-famer to afraid at least 15 years as a country stan musial of course as you see how Fonseca is getting ready stan has played 22 years departments Jessie Haynes 18 Bob Gibson 17 years LeBrock 16 in retching it's 15 [Applause] you know we're gonna find out where is but is wondering what what happened is he he gets that opportunity those years ago [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so the defense for the counters opens the door for the Cardinals Cairo the corn RBI double nine-to-five Chicago now fun to take it a little harder out there now you know it's not going to go as an unearned run but I think most of us watching tonight think that it should and that would be not only the fourth unearned run tonight the Cubs have allowed but now 51 on the year that that is giving away bases and giving away wins well now they got a pretty good matchup you'd think Bellhorn of course really playing out of position when he's not a shortstop by trade Jim Edmonds is now batting he's had 18 hits in 36 lifetime at-bats against Gordon I mean that did not many hitters against any pitcher with those kind of numbers with that many at-bats against you know a lot of that came though when they were members of the Kansas City Royals and the Anaheim Angels in Flash Gordon was a starting pitcher you get to see him two three times in the same day you're gonna have a better opportunity to succeed but you know I don't remember that many guys hitting 500 against board when he was a starting pitcher I remember a light on him though he you know he threw a lot of pitches every inning and had trouble getting deep into the game I don't remember who it was one of the world might have been George Brett did say you know if you're only gonna go 3 innings it might as well be the last week that's when the thoughts of him being a poser came about while he was terrific in Boston therefore all years and could be again the velocity the curveball it's just the command of that basketball let's put him behind in the counts water in one go admins who is 1 for 3 with a walk in this game now it's 2 two hoses on deck [Applause] one of the Roger Smith milk 19 years in the big leagues down the Hall of Fame and he finished his career going to the postseason with the cartoons 1996 [Applause] into six three straight hits against Gordon and the congos have just one base runner away from being able to send the possible time round of the game to the play that Bruce Kim is going to bring in his closer Antonio alfonseca so Jim Edmonds with his second hit of the game Michael's had 12 hits all told nine to six Cardinals trailing the Cubs Jim Edmonds continues to swing the - now pools coming up against off one Sanka when we come this is a Honda certified used car even if you take away its 150 point inspection it's comprehensive 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and it's concurrent 7 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty you're left with one undeniable completely comforting fact it may be used but it's still a Honda for a limited time get special APR financing as low as five point nine percent for up to 60 months on all Honda certified used cars what's up bro train the lizard sweet hey tastes great yeah feels even better I think you're trying too hard so be yourself bottom line we've got a boost margins do more with life scale back in the Pacific Rim actually I plan Dave we're going with del seatbelts is focused on us as they are on driving down cost PowerEdge servers Intel Xeon processors flexibility we need and that cuts costs not productivity smart move Dave now we won't even have to cut the free coffee find out how you can cut costs across your enterprise easy as Dell call or go online today good evening I'm Tom dent hey baby what it's your appetite we want Arby's new market fresh ultimate BLT with prayer so soft all that temporary bacon Arby's new market fresh ultimate BLT I like this new guy give me into your grown-up tastes there's the big right-hander I'm 2000 alfonseca tried to save a 3-run advantage here in the ninth and that 13 saves this year for the Cubs the former Florida Marlin now this guy's goes hard and in that wall moves a lot 13 417 in his save opportunities after converting the first seven straight as a cub he struggled as of late Albert Pujols who's a guy that makes a lot of guys struggle Robert no hits tonight although safe an error back in the sixth inning there's Edmonds at first base McGriff on the bag with it [Applause] right twelve holes got on base here JD drew would be the possible tying run of the game and drew just destroyed the San Francisco Giants this past Thursday in San Francisco with a three-run homer and a four RBI game in a Fordham three Cardinal win had to pitch an inning in a third and yesterday's ballgame that victory you mentioned for the Cubs wired right before the season started along with starting pitcher tonight Mack two men from the Florida Marlins three-on-one [Applause] Ozzie Smith played 19 years finishing his career in the postseason with the Cardinal only one other Hall of Famer who played for as long as 19 years finished his career in the postseason by Gaza finished his career in 1973 in the World Series with the mass [Applause] [Music] see and Willie Mays about this you think this kid doesn't get the game okay he's taking all the way a31 cookie of all he could've hit a long ways but he knows what you mentioned he's not the tying run the next guy is there goes Edmonds is the ball is fouled out of play off to the right so much maturity at such a young age by Albert fools [Music] if Tony put the take sign on there or he just did it on his own but it's the way the game of baseball should be played so what if he hits a home run the odds are he's not going to the outdoor city he's gonna make it out of these things about so take it make him come back with another fish maybe he'll give Edmonds runs and ball four [Applause] he is the possible tying run and he would very much like to hit a home run after having a home run that bounced off his glove in the 8th inning you know if it had just left it alone it would have maybe you know been a double or triple but he kind of helped it over the fence baccala for the year [Applause] 14 homies to riser in for the Cardinals nobody out that is a strike had a hit against all four say he's only faced in five times Tino Martinez on deck [Applause] but two strikes down and their tenacity no I see Game four of the World Series last year the Yankee Stadium he electrified the big crowd it is [Music] [Applause] idolize Barry Bonds as a kid kind of patted himself after Barry because he was a left-handed hitter the speed and with power [Applause] before Sega gets rude you know there was a couple of different things you have to learn as a hit for an average you got to learn to hit for power and then after you do that you got to learn to hit with runners in scoring position drew has been much better this year in that situation but that something wasn't a good at-bat he had a fastball early in the count that was very hittable he couldn't pull the trigger on and then he got something selfie there the finish gave bad Gino that's a foul just look look at how he comes into the box I mean that's that's this guy's been a part of some big victories and you know a lot of World Series success he's going to get three healthy cuts and that's up the middle come for JD droop but it just wasn't there and added that tonight do you know having mussels stranded his right side of his plating of earlier this week there comes Evans he scores four walls around 2/3 [Applause] the kraang pose mounting and never come back in the same day nine to seven the possible timelines Cardoza hottest hitter [Music] particularly in these situations we talked about the numbers in July of how he can hit with runners in scoring position and how he is no stranger to big games if you can get that hit in Game seven of the World Series this is nothing [Applause] with his first hit of the game he had not been on base in this one now Edgar Renteria [Applause] situations with runners in scoring position three-sixty standard tonight is only such a bang [Applause] you can talk about the blown save by Al Fonseca but that's not the story these Cardinals were just more determined they got six in the bottom of the night if they would have needed 10 I think they would have got that as well there's a pitch look at the aggressiveness on the part of Renteria he's been there before he'll be there again and more times than not he's going to succeed on the day that Ozzie Smith the Cardinals great shortstop was inducted into the Hall of Fame the crane goes current shortstop it's a dramatic home run that electrifies the cried and his teammates Edgar Renteria [Applause] home run as a fonseca they just couldn't believe his eyes the fifth home run of the year and the Cardinals who were down six to nothing come all the way back in when it they were down by five in the ninth inning just like a year ago when the Cleveland Indians were down by five and came back to beat Seattle for Rick Sutcliffe and my partner Joe Morgan John Miller stay tuned SportsCenter coming up next good night from st. Louis [Applause] you
