Cubs baseball hi again everybody sitting in for the Hall of Famer Harry Carey and as you know today was supposed to have been Harry Caray Day commemorating his 50 years of broadcasting and thus everybody at Wrigley Field including Chuck Swirsky Steve stone and myself Tom Brennaman sporting the shades today Stoney in honor of the Hall of Famer well we had a chance to talk to Harry before the game and he says that he'll be a couple more days in the hospital but then he's anticipating getting out hopefully on Wednesday Tommy and he sounded pretty good he sounded like certainly the last few days have been a little rough on him but right now I think Harry's on the mend and certainly he's watching today we wish him well and a speedy recovery and hurry back Harry we can't wait to have you back and boy do you look ridiculous in those glasses turning to today's game Rick Sutcliffe we have not seen him in an opposing uniform since his Dodger days and today is his first start as a member of the Cardinals since leaving the Cubs he's had a rough year and Rick Sutcliffe couldn't have asked for a better day to pitch in Wrigley Field because he remembers the days when the wind was blowing out and he used to go to the mound today the wind is blowing in and there is the flag commemorating 50 years of broadcasting for the Hall of Famer Harry Caray holy cow Harry against the Cardinals without you in the booth somehow it just doesn't seem the same as far as the Cubs are concerned they're getting very good pitching right now Stoney we know that offense has been the problem but Steve Trachsel is starting to regain that form we saw at the beginning of the year well Steve Trachsel suddenly has gotten the ball over the plate consistently now he got it over early in the season he went through a very short spell where he was getting behind some of the hitters having some problems getting the ball over the plate of late he is getting everything over the plate once again and he has given up a lot of home runs Tommy but like Rick Sutcliffe a very good day to pitch because today you can get away with a few more high fast balls than you were able to get away with before and looking at you you look a little like Urkel who in the world is Urkel well he's this little guy that's on television on one of the major networks and he has less is very similar to the thing you short guys you have that complex well it's that kind of day and of course we are really sorry that it couldn't be Harry Caray day here today because Tony I know he was really looking forward to that and particularly with the Cardinals in town and bear in mind the word and the key word is postponement not cancellation there will be a Harry Carey day we will give you enough notice so that you're going to be able to come out to the this ballpark in record numbers to honor Harry alrighty let's not listen in with today's national anthem [Music] what so proudly we whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous [Music] for the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming and the Rockets red glare the bombs bursting in gay prove through the night that our flag was still there oh say does that star-spangled banner [Music] anyway [Music] oh the land of the free and the home [Music] [Applause] why are you still up 20 C oh I can't sleep 20 D I'm on the edge of my seat call the new nonstops isn't it yeah more daily nonstops to Baltimore Washington International and don't forget ward any nine stops to Louisville in st. Louis gosh I'm so excited for kids it still we're trying to sleep back here better sit back and relax it's really late good night 20 D the secret to a strong finish is endurance high endurance from Old Spice all day long that proves it's the longest-lasting hardest-working the best deodorant stick it evaporates less quickly it also lasts longer protects better now that's endurance for the longest-lasting hardest-working the best deodorant stick demand proof get high endurance from Old Spice you won't go far without it from our oh it's easy Dec wash would restore looks like breaking your fence golly it's easy it's fast it's amazing but then again new easy Dec wash we took the knowledge of armor all and applied it to your home we're a beautiful Wrigley Field in Chicago Illinois another sellout crowd on hand here today the weather certainly is threatening we're hoping the rain will stay away and here's the way the Cardinals will stack him up under Joe Torre a new lineup today with Brian Jordan starting in left field Ozzie Smith is a shortstop hitting third and center today Ray Lankford Gerald Perry still in for the injured Greg Jefferies batting cleanup Marc Whitten bats fit plays right hitting six playing 3rd Todd Zeile Louie Salas a on the nod at second base he'll bat seventh Terry McGriff starts behind the plate batting eighth and he'll be catching pitcher Rick Sutcliffe the Pepsi defense this is a way the Cubs line up and one change as you see Tuffy Rhodes in for Glenallen Hill in centerfield still Buechele Dunston Sanchez and grace with a battery of Wilkins and Steve Trachsel the umpires Kure Crawford behind the plate larry poncino at first Jeffrey Kellogg at second and bruce fremming the fan favorite here at Wrigley Field works down at 3rd and Steve Trachsel going to the mound today for his 16th start of the year it's his second against the Cardinals last time out against Florida Steve Trachsel was his old self he went six and 2/3 innings gave up six hits and just two earned runs he walked four and he fanned six he's faced the Cardinals one time this year that was back on me 9 he won the game six to three and he was brilliant in that one he went seven innings giving up five hits and just tore and runs he didn't walk anybody and he fan nine so he's coming off a performance which saw his er a moved to a very respectable 257 against him in the one start and he's familiar with the Cardinal hitters likewise they're familiar with him and the Cardinals do not have a lot of power in that lineup in fact Greg Jeffries off once again and Gerald Perry once again at first base so without Jeffries in the lineup it's not like he's a great Power Man but he is a wonderful hitter and certainly if you're on the mound for the Cubs you don't miss jeffries in that Cardinal lineup Trachsel had a wonderful start his only career start against st. Louis it came back on may the night this season when he went seven innings allowed five hits in two runs he didn't walk anybody while Fanning nine you can make a strong case that was his best game this season Steve Trachsel now has gotten the idea that when he goes to the mound Tommy and you'll hear this debated among guys who talk about pitching some will say that the best pitch is a curveball others will say that the best pitch is the good fastball some will tell you the best pitches the split-finger which has become a vogue you last 10 years but the reality of it is as it was when baseball was invented the best pitch is strike one if you throw strike one in an abandoned becomes a defensive at-bat and Steve Trachsel of late especially when he's pitching winning baseball and he's won his last two he throws a lot of pitches strike one and it doesn't matter which pitch you throw get it over and it sets up a completely different at-bat for the hitter so a Trachsel making his 16th start is second against the Redbirds chris chambliss and Joe Torre talking things over and they hope to be smiling if their offense can collect a few more hits yesterday Kevin Foster dan please a can Randy Myers held a Cardinal lineup down to just three hits in fact Tom trouble horns team only had three hits but they had two runs in the first and a home run by boos shell in the fifth in route to that 3-1 win so today the final game and the decisive game of this three-game weekend series in the odd man out in the outfield today for the Cardinals is Bernard Gilkey and the Cubs won't miss him either he doubled in each previous game he was on base four times in two games and Bernard Gilkey gives you a pretty good speed in a quality hitter the man has hit 300 a couple of years and with him out of the lineup it gives Joe Torre another potent bat on the bench but a man who will not see four at-bats today all right here we go a Brian Jordan hitting at 253 home runs 11 batted in he had a single in the ninth inning yesterday against Randy Myers his a pinch hitter and it's ball one were officially underway in Chicago little chilly it was very warm and muggy this morning but then the wind direction turned around stony mentioned it's blowing in so a good pitcher's day and it's really cooled off to a tone out of Jordan lights around here at Wrigley Field and Steve Trachsel has a history of being a winning pitcher in professional baseball in the course of his brief minor-league career he was 31 and 18 combined so he's won wherever he's gone and that's held true in the major leagues as well to a no to Brian Jordan and it's in the air to right hit pretty well Sosa at the warning track will make the grab one down to begin the ballgame and a big advantage for steve trachsel who has given up a lot of home runs now we talked about throwing some high fast balls if that pitch were throwing at 11:30 the wind was blowing straight out it was very warm at the park and that would have been long gone but it's almost 1:30 and two hours make quite a difference at Wrigley Field and now with the wind blowing in its - the warning track and one up one out here's Ozzie Smith 229 batter three home runs 19 batted in he looked to the strike as he really bulked up over this winter putting on nearly 15 pounds of muscle he's still hoping to find the batting stroke drops it down alive and it rolls foul good play by Steve Buechele that one caught the grass normally when a ball catches the grass it's going to stay there but this one had some spin on it taking it toward the line and as it trickled off the grass it rolled foul and Steve Buechele knowing he's not going to get Ozzie Smith here just waiting for the ball to go foul the instant it does right here you have to grab it if you're a young player because that ball can come back into fair territory we saw a highlight just about a week ago of that happening in a major league game where the third baseman waited the ball spun foul actually rolled back into fair territory turned into a base hit come outfield very shallow they play Ozzie to go the other way Derek Mae has taken away to line drive hits near the line the last two days and it's in the dirt 1 & 2 dereck may very shallow you get a look here and close or closer anyway to the left field wide well Ozzy likes to protect he's very difficult to strike out when he gets two strikes especially he'll go to left field he'll just try to slap at the ball and more times than not it turns into a soft liner to left the 1 2 pitch missed down and in Trachsel has worked at least seven innings in eight of his 15 starts and in the starts when he goes into the seventh a 5 and 2 record at 209'er a as again Smith fouls it away but when he has gone less than seven innings he's been hit and hit hard an earned run average of nearly seven well the reason is simple time in those games where he's really struggled he's gotten behind and he throws a lot of 203 1 pitches and when you have those kind of offensive advance for the hitter eventually they're going to get to you very few pitchers are good enough or overpowering enough to pitch through that 203 one-count consistently into center field a base hit for Smith so I see a one-out single here in the first inning and now it'll be center fielder ray Lankford now we talked about Ray Lankford hitting in the number one spot the last couple of days and we speculated that perhaps that's not the best spot for him in the batting order first of all he has power in fact he's got the most homeruns out of any of the Cardinals in the lineup today second of all he strikes out and an alarming rate 75 strikeouts in just 69 games that's not conducive to a good leadoff hitter but put the man in the middle where he can generate some power and you might have something different so today he is in an RBI situation in the number three spot Ozzie nearly 700 stolen bases in his major league career and by this time next season he'll be closing in on 2,500 major-league hits what a career that will end up one day being inducted into Cooperstown at baseball's Hall of Fame Ozzie Smith is stolen for bases he's been caught twice [Applause] lankford looks at a strike he's down oh and one last year as he stole 21 bases this year he hasn't been quite as active and there you see the numbers and Rick Wilkins looking over in the dugout to see if mode hrabowski might want to pitch out here another throw sending Ozzy back to the bag Stoney talked about ray lankford number one in strikeouts in the National League one better than Reggie Sanders and you'll notice when you look up and down that list you don't find a lot of leadoff hitters on that list guys usually that lead that list are hitting right in the middle of the order and they're driving in a lot of runs oh and one two Lankford and he takes a fastball high yeah on that list you have some of the league leaders and runs batted in in fact Galarraga Sanders having a fine year along with Bobby Bonilla you're gonna swing hard and you're gonna hit home runs and drive in runs you're gonna strike out a lot unless you're a rare hitter and there's a look at the hero of yesterday young Kevin Foster who was put together quite a run at it he's made five starts he's actually been outstanding in four of the starts and his worst performance ironically was his first win that coming against the Giants when didn't throw badly just didn't have control but he was most impressive yesterday boy the 1 1 another fastball it missed outside and high now if you're looking for a good pitch to run it's this pitch here the only problem is as we've said Langford does swing and miss a lot but many times on a 2-1 count they decide to turn the baserunner loose so Trachsel who's got a good move to first and he hasn't used his best move yet might like to go with it here Ozzie at first one out two and one to Ray Lankford and there goes Ozzie pitch taken throw down to second base and waiting with a tiger Sanchez so easily gunning down Smith is a combination of wilkins and Trachsel Ozzie back to the dugout two away in the inning if you give Rick Wilkins a chance he's going to get you and Rick Wilkins has all the best of it here a high outside fastball he sets up well gets rid of the ball quickly and Ozzie is out from here to Gary Indiana and it doesn't matter what kind of jump you get here you're not gonna outrun the armor Rick Wilkins so now the three one to Lankford is fouled away the count will go full we're just underway glad you're aboard on this Sunday afternoon Cubs will be entertaining the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series starting tomorrow night and we invite you to be with us right here on WGN three balls two strikes on Lankford and another foul ball Cardinals come in one game under 500 they trail front running Cincinnati by six and a half the Pirates have won five in a row and they have moved into a third-place tie as you see with the Redbirds Cubs anchoring that division 10 games under 500 for the Pirates people better keep an eye on them well they have a couple of big advantages over there in Pittsburgh Tommy number one a lot of teams in the division didn't exactly take the Pirates seriously coming into this season number two they've got a man in the dugout consistently who is just an outstanding manager on a day-to-day basis they've got one of the best pitching coaches around and so the whole pirates staff and I've got a pretty good general manager in Cam bonifay he's put together a team of a lot of players you might not have heard of but they're playing as a team right now there is ball 4 to Ray Lankford so the Trachsel has faced 3 batters he's allowed to hit and now walk but in no real danger 1 on 2 men out and coming up is Gerald Perry Lankford has pretty good speed but he hasn't really learned the intricacies of base stealing on a consistent basis yet he's stolen eight bases but he's been caught six times that isn't a particularly good base running percentage Perry hitting at 326 a couple of home runs he had one in the series opener on Friday 11 batted in now Perry a notorious first ball fastball hitter and that comes from being a pinch hitter primarily most good pinch hitters will tell you that they look for the first ball fastball out over the plate if they get it they're going to hit it hard and Jarrell has carried that over as a starter especially the first time up so let's see if Trachsel goes to a soft breaking ball maybe to set him up came with a breaking ball there goes like furred and he's going to beat the throw so that time Wilkins had a breaking pitch rather than a fastball and easily Langford collecting the stolen base well Lankford picks a good pitch to run because it is the soft breaking ball and Wilkins has a good shot but he comes out and throws in the dirt Dunston does a real good job here but as you can see Jeffrey Kellogg on the call Langford has it easily if you can guess curveball and knowing that parry is a first ball fastball hitter a good call by Joe Torre guessing perhaps they start off with the first ball breaking pitch he sent Langford and wound up stealing himself in a scoring position game is underway Philadelphia at the end of three in front of Atlanta 5 to 1 it's one nothing Florida over Montreal at the end of three and also in the fourth inning the Pirates again rolling along beating New York for nothing they're in a rain delay in Cincinnati oh and two two Gerald Perry another good off-speed pitch here by Steve Trachsel I think we ought to mention the man that looked so impressive against the Cubs in San Diego and that was young Joey Hamilton who spun a beauty last night at Cincinnati Hamilton stymied the reds on just six hits and the Padres have played six thirteen balls since May 22nd they're a very interesting team I think you know they caught so much heat getting rid of McGriff Sheffield right down the list Aaron Jackson Tony Fernandez but hey they're not a bad club and the way these young pitchers are coming along I don't think you're all that thrilled about playing them right now well they have assembled some excellent arms in the starting rotation with Scott Sanders and Joey Hamilton and Andy Ashby all three of those guys throw the well to in tune out appearing and you just completed that sentence and we didn't mention Andy Bennett and of course well Andy Bennett has been around you keep forgetting him as far as the young arms are concerned but we're not talking about a gray beard and and events and he anchors that staff as a legitimate number one so you're getting to the point when you faced the Padres where you're not getting any soft spots in the starting rotation and if you can do that Tommy it doesn't take a whole lot of runs to win games Langford it ii ii ii ii ii perry checked his swing and went too far that'll end the inning one hit one one after a half inning in chicago cardinals nothing the cubs are coming up [Music] and every painting accessory imaginable there's even advice to make things go smoothly all a great square deal prices Builders square will get you squared away no score after a half inning here's the Pepsi Chicago Cubs starting lineup it'll be Sean Dunston again leading off playing short Mark Grace that second plays first Sammy and right field with Derek made the cleanup hitter in left Wilkins moved up to the fifth spot with Tuffy Rhodes a rare start recently in center the latter third through shell at third Sanchez at Short and Steve Trachsel on the mound defensively for the Redbirds it'll be an outfield of Jordan Lankford Witten left to right on the infield zeal Ozzy Alice ayah in place of Pena Perry in place of Jeffries in a battery of McGriff and the Red Baron the former cub Rick Sutcliffe and the last two times out Sutcliffe has really had his problems he's gone a total of just seven and 2/3 innings combined against Florida and Montreal giving up a whopping total of 17 hits and nine earned runs ten runs overall so Rick is struggling and we will see a lot of high fast balls today but again the wind is blowing in Dunston at 266 hitter looks at ball one Shaun's seven homers 26 batted in there you see the numbers this season on Sutcliffe the innings pitch two hits allowed not very impressive it hard in the right-center Lankford on the run won't get there in time Cardinal outfield can really go get the ball Cardinal out fields gonna have to go get the ball today because there's going to be a lot of balls hit in the air and with the wind blowing in Rick Sutcliffe has a big advantage as Ray Langford reaches up and hauls it down so Sutcliffe this year a total of 40 and a third inning 63 hits he has given up seven home runs Mark Grace hitting at 290 28 batted in another cool cloudy day here in Chicago we showed you earlier the lights have already been turned on to a note of great Grace and Sutcliffe were very close friends in fact they still are now spent a lot of time together in the offseason when they have a chance well Rick meant so much to both the 84 and the 89 cows and that pitch right there is a pitch that helped Rick Sutcliffe as much as any other pitch and he calls it his batting practice fastball he falls behind then he just throws one about 73 74 miles an hour tries to throw it right down the middle and most hitters are well out in front at that time Mark Grace a little tardy on a 73 mile an hour fastball and he's tardy again well that one Rick pumped it up and got it to 81 yeah so he's not throwing particularly hard today he will be around the plate now more times than not and Sutcliffe has had to adapt to what Mother Nature has taken away from him in a very long and illustrious career rick has been a good one for many years but you're watching the tail end of what's been a great career - and - to Grace and it's popped up easy play for Ozzie Smith - down course Rick Sutcliffe a former Rookie of the Year winner when he broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 1979 what a scion award here with the Cubs when he came over here from the Cleveland Indians in 1984 Rick went 16 and won and he was primarily responsible for the Cubs holding off the Mets that year Sutcliffe was just outstanding all season long for the Cubs and in those days he threw that fastball in the low 90s he still threw a lot of high fastballs but in those days the high fastball seemed to jump over most of the bats [Applause] well you have a pair of human rain delays getting together here Sutcliffe on the mound Sammy at the plate well this should be a fairly lengthy event unless Sammy picks out something early to his liking he went around to far a ball a strike well normally with a veteran on the mound like Sutcliffe he's not going to throw Sammy many strikes if he throws him any strikes at all he's gonna throw some high fastball well out of the strike zone then when he does go to the breaking ball it's probably going to be low in the dirt somewhat Griff if he gets two strikes on Sammy had best blocked something down the one:1 delivery is live hard into left and it will drop in front of Jordan who smothers of all to keep it in front of it so Sammy the first cub hit a two-out single and it gives Derek Mae a chance here in the first inning from the left-field camera sammy sosa gets a curveball this time but he gets it up and out over the plate then drives it into left field good play by Brian Jordan when he realized he wasn't gonna make this catch then he made sure he got his body in front of it so that Sammy stays at first Sammy the team leader as we mentioned in just about every category home runs RBIs stolen bases as well 12 of those in 20 attempts ball one to Derek may Derek still in a slump we have not heard much from him recently 33 runs batted in five home runs at 285 average what Sammy has to watch for is the back leg of Sutcliffe because he's got a move where he bends the back knee and then goes to first and that's not the move we were talking about it's a good move technically it's a ball you have some umpires who will call it larry poncino is at first base today was a move I originally saw perfected by Juan Marichal Sutcliffe as a member of the Cubs had a good one on the ground Alice saith he'll shuffle the ball over to Ozzie and that'll end the inning one hit one left at the end of one no score [Music] [Music] the king of burgers celebrates The Lion King now in theaters with Lion King size fine mist that won't weigh hair down so even finer thing hair looks fuller to get a fuller thicker look with consort well today it was to pose to a bit Harry Caray Day commemorating his fifty years in broadcasting and Harry you see what everybody thinks about you all those in the press box sporting their Harry Caray sunglasses boy does that look good doesn't it that's a good look you want to think about using that one all the time we had a chance to talk with Harry a bit earlier today and won't fill you in on how he's doing on Tuesday and hopefully I'll be out of here on Wednesday when do you think you compared the three-game road trip to Houston and I probably missed that I'll be ready when the team comes back home hopefully with a long and we cannot wait for you to get back here E I know you're kicking back and watching the game today boy we missed not having you around I'll tell you that party and I know you're looking forward to that doubleheader on the what is it the fourth of July against the Colorado Rockies right here at Wrigley Field that's when the Cubs returned from Houston right into a twin Bill Airy so come on back and call all 18 of them here's Mark Witten to begin the inning and our consort game conditions we talked about the wind now coming out of the Northeast so it's gotten cool just under 65 degrees in that wind at 18 miles an hour to it to to Whitman if you stay away from Marc Whitten he will come right back up the middle so when you deliver the ball you have to act as the fifth infielder and be ready on the ground is Sanchez one away tomorrow night we told you those red-hot pirates are coming in plenty of tickets available a night game tomorrow followed by 120 starting times on Tuesday and Wednesday and there you see fine left-handers steve cook will go against Willie banks Willie coming back off that injury when he went sliding in hard his second basis last timeout off the end of the bat grace will flip it over to track silver retired - no he missed it back though fractals saying I touched it maybe a little polish rubbed off on the back top treble horn going to come out and argue at first base umpire Larry Ponzi dough [Music] well they give an assist to mark race and they give an error on steve trachsel and we'll take another look at it that's the first air of the year maybe if Steve Trachsel doesn't look back at the bag maybe pansino gives him the benefit of the doubt and right there it doesn't look like he had it and we'll watch Steve Trachsel for all you young pitchers make your one swipe at the bag and then toss the ball around the infield right there is when he looked back and he looks at the umpire and he's saying he caught the corner of it perhaps he did but larry poncino said no so it goes one Trachsel unable to fake innocence there you can't glance up and look right into yumpire you're not gonna buy into that so here's a Lesya only at 2:15 two home runs 12 batted in he looks at strike one each team with a hip neither team with a run one on one out we're in the second [Applause] whose shell about a half step in on the grass down at third-base now let's say it runs pretty well and he'll put down a bunt every now and then nothing into - Lois Alice Seiya well I had a chance last night to go to a benefit called the evening of the stars and it was held at Sportsman's Park a wonderful evening benefiting Northwestern Memorial Hospital I had a chance to run into Michael Schaeffer the couple worth of pot and John Mark wired the cub internist as well as steve rosen the head of oncology at Northwestern Memorial it was just a wonderful evening and raised a lot of money for a wonderful cause those folks at Northwestern just about the best around unbelievable I know you and I have had to undergo some surgeries here in the last year or so and where they did a bang-up job for me over there last summer and all headed up by Susan new fur who was coordinator hit hard in the left Derek may gets turned around but able to recover in time to make the plays heal back to first two down here in the Cardinals second inning of a scoreless game the people who put that on were the Chicago baseball cancer charities women's board we've heard a lot of the men's board in the golf tournament that goes hand-in-hand with that but it was the woman's board last night that put on that wonderful event so we thank you and it turned out beautifully that does not surprise me that you would be there with that in mind wouldn't have missed it for the world here's Jerry McGriff 242 hitter 9 batted in filling in for Tom pag naazy today McGriff has done a decent job when given a chance to play it's not very often Magma's he's back there just about all the time [Applause] yeah there's a chance smart gentlemen they're bringing that umbrella along he might need it later today we've got that infamous window we've heard so much about before the rains are supposed to come and hopefully they'll hold off until the resolution of this one or at least till the fourth right till you scamper over to the radio booth your place taken by Wayne Larrivee who's done a really nice job in place of Barry Carey filling in Wayne's a terrific announcer and he checked his swing they appeal in pansino says no two balls in a strike course many of you up outside of Chicago may be not aware of the fact that Wayne the play-by-play voice of Chicago Bears football for WGN Radio of course the voice of bulls basketball right here on channel 9 during the winter there you see Wayne Oh [Applause] hit hard into left-field but may is there and that'll end the inning no runs no hits on air a man left after one and a half at Wrigley Field no score [Music] airbags seatbelts and panty-dropper next child safety seats careful Fullerton in Chicago [Music] [Laughter] Oh what's an opus well Harry Caray Day continues here at Wrigley Field you see whale everything on the left and one but Ronald incentive the old third baseman boy does he look ridiculous yeah but Tommy the only difference is that Ronny with those sides of those glasses they really fit him rest of the guys the glasses look a little big but Ronnie looks right at home with those two very five look anticipate a couple years down the road that's gonna be his everyday life might be hit very well could be there's strike one to Rick Wilkins [Applause] prick hitting it only 2:16 for home runs 20 batted in strike on the outer edge he's behind Owen - you saw Wilkins name on that National League strikeout leaders list few short moments ago [Applause] and did he go they appeal to third no no chance no chance bruce fremming was gonna ring up Rick Wilkins nug Rick might get the benefit of a call or two and that time he did a lot of fans under the umbrellas as it's starting to mist here at Wrigley Field there is strike three first strikeout of the game for Rick Sutcliffe you can send along get well wishes to DeWitt Taylor who is the father of the Cubs Wanda Taylor does such a nice job in the media relations department and DeWitt get well soon from your children and grandsons one down nobody on Tuffy roads making a start here today did he get to forty four seven home runs eighteen batted in why the move to Tuffy today right-hander on the man I think maybe because such cliff throws a lot of slow breaking balls and certainly when Allen Hill likes to hit fast balls especially out over the plate so maybe just the fact that another left-hander in the lineup knowing that suck cliff is gonna throw a lot of soft breaking balls a man who can lay down a but occasionally and also to keep Tuffy sharp it's good to get forward bats every now and then high three and oh and probably Tom treble horn figure Tommy that Tuffy would probably draw a walk his first time up [Applause] yeah see the three Oh delivery is in there a strike so three and one two roads one down nobody on here in the last two the second in it and there is no score Sutcliffe gets assigned from McGriff turns it loose and it's right back to the mound barehanded by the read there that he throws him out [Applause] Harrell Jacobs of Jacobs win Buick on hand as is gabor bushi of suburban do it for all you young pitchers take a look at this game you don't have to bare hand the ball on the mound that's not a recommended procedure because that little tapper Sutcliffe had all kinds of time if you try to barehand too many of them you're going to miss a couple of those and when you do it cost you a base runner so gets the ball in the glove unless you've been around like Rick Sutcliffe who has been in the major leagues for many many years so here's Steve Buechele the cup third baseman at 2:28 batter nine home runs he got his night to the season yesterday it came in the fifth inning said to Steve Buechele are you using the home run stroke today you're gonna go with the base hit stroke to right field with the wind blowing in he said I'm trying to find any stroke all right now you gotta admire Buscemi he'll be the first to talk about he'll just come right out and tell you I've been terrible and that's rare to hear that from a player at least in today's climate broken bat roller Ozzy picks it up throws on to a parry him that'll do it so one two three second four suck lifts we head for the third Cardinals nothing the Cubs likewise ever since Southwest Airlines introduced friends fly three people have gotten friendlier your favorite pillow if you make reservations and buy your roundtrip ticket at our regular low unrestricted fare a last relationships neighborhoods and the businesses in them like your neighborhood 76 station for years folks have relied on 76 or quality gasolines to help keep their engines clean and running smooth nothing lasts forever but we think a long long time would be nice 76 though with the spirit Oh Derek stones and the passionate role she was born to play Monday at 11:30 on WGN channel 9 Floyd is back in business weekday mornings at 9:00 on WGN channel 9 no scores we have for the 3rd and it's at time again for our Aflac trivia question which pitcher allowed Lou Brock's 3,000th career hit Dennis lamp Rick Russell Dick Tidrow or Bruce Souter whoo not bad I'll say Dennis lamb all right okay let's take a look take a look here again in a minute who you know I'm just guessing you're gonna say Alejandro Pena I'm gonna go with Rick Russian okay [Applause] it's no doubt in my mind you've been planted with the answer as Sutcliffe lays down a beauty but Trachsel probe didn't hit Sutcliffe in the are in the right arm got him in the right elbow and he's out because he was inside the baseline so Rick not only gets a painful experience and a tingling hand but he doesn't get on first base as he was inside the baseline and Joe Torre is gonna argue about it and Rick Sutcliffe doesn't know about it yet well break it to him gently larry poncino the call was made by jerry crawford we'll be able to take a better look right here now watch Rick he is in fair territory right now let's see where he is when he gets hit he is in fair territory right there still in fair territory and that's why they have that little set of double lines down the first base line they want you to be on the inside of the foul line if there's a play there if you are on the inside the field side you're gonna be called out if you're on the outside to the right side of that line you're gonna be safe that's a good call by Jerry Crawford that's good work absolutely and Jerry's explaining it to Rick Sutcliffe he said but Jerry my arm hurts the man hit me in the right elbow he said well you'll have plenty of time to take care of it because there's only one out in the inning and it's you so go shake it off that says they call a baseball a big hang with him [Music] and for Steve Trachsel he was saved his second heir of this very young game so here's Brian Jordan he flied to right to the warning track and ride his first time up let's back out for a station ID on the Cubs baseball Network this is America's number one sports station wgn-tv Chicago we're back at Wrigley Field Chicago Illinois Tom Brennaman sitting in for the Hall of Famer Harry Caray alongside Steve stone that ball ripped down the line into the corner and Jordan who runs very well will cruise into second base Derek out in trouble and Jordan Bowie slams on the brakes he thought about third well with the World Cup here in Chicago take a look at Derek May and he looks like he should be playing for the Brazilian team could have been a corner kick watch it again Derek going down knowing he can't get a glove on it so what do you do if you can't get a glove on it the next best thing you kick it into play here he comes now that's it you give it the boot you keep it in front of you you push it back to the field of play and hold Jordan to a double exactly well done Pele may here's Ozzie Smith runner at second one out and it's found how to play Pele and they [Applause] it didn't have a lot of time to work on that you know I know you did [Laughter] [Applause] so in 1 da C Smith jordon leading at second base scoreless game here in the top of the third high chopper Trachsel throws to grace advancing to third as jordan every time i see a player kick a ball it reminds me of the game i did back in 1989 when Paul O'Neill then the right fielder is Cincinnati and all of you have seen this highlight on a single into right field O'Neill comes charging in tries to pick it up bumbles once fumbles twice fumbles a third time and in frustration he kicked the ball strangely enough it could not have been a better cutoff throw or a cut-off kick it went right to first baseman Todd benzine so we'll watch the derrick may adventure once again not a bad job but now Jordan at third in this scoreless game and you figure it's going to be a low-scoring game again today with a wind blowing in so a very big event for Steve Trachsel ray Lankford the hitter looks at ball one like for drew a walk stole a base was left at second back in the first inning geordan 90 feet away from the game's first run [Applause] 90 mile an hour fastball but amidst up high Cubs and Cardinals won't be getting together again for quite a while and of course with that dark cloud hanging over baseball the possibility of a strike who knows three a no doubt account they'll get together at the end of July st. Louis will come in two down a runner at third three-and-oh to Ray like free they gave him the 3o green light he came up empty we gotta be careful here because you've just found a 3-1 fastball Langford by now no is the velocity that fastball you've got first base open so you got to make a good pitch they're going with the fastball away and let's see what Langford can do with it 3 1 delivery and it's a strike very good pitch by Steve Trachsel he threw it exactly where Wilkins wanted it right about the belt right on the outside corner so three and two to Langford Brian Jordan a third two men out no score in the ball game and he fouls it away into the upper deck well should be an interesting call by Rick Wilkins here because you've gone with four straight fast balls and Langford a big strikeout man if Trachsel goes with a splitter the curveball and he gets it away from Langford he's gonna strike him out so we'll look in at Wilkins let's see what he wants as he hangs the sign for Steve Trachsel that's a fastball inside and Trachsel is going to go with it three two on the way and it's popped up whose shell racing in and foul ground makes the grab good work there by cracky one hit one left after two and a half at Wrigley Field still no score that's South Dakota we found out Tony was pregnant and later of course the babies were born eight weeks premature it was hard on both of us Sutcliffe who was allowed one hit he is fan to bat her and not walked anybody so Sanchez Trachsel then back to the top in Sean Dunston at this point if you need a definition of a crafty veteran all you have to do is look out at Rick Sutcliffe he is the original crafty veteran because he's doing it with just a lot of off-speed pitches and just trying to move the ball in and out and pitching on savvy flyball straightaway center Langford drifting back one down Cub fans celebrate the 80th anniversary of Wrigley Field with an exclusive tour of the friendly confines private tours of Wrigley at 9:00 on WGN channel 9 Jerald Perry leads it off for the Cardinals here as we start at the top of the fourth inning this has been a series of good pitching here between the Cubs and Cardinals this weekend and it certainly has that and today we have the young of the old news the rookie and the veteran Rick Sutcliffe and Steve Trachsel mid making pitch for pitch and so far neither one is blanked no not at all Perry takes a pitch up high and it's 2 balls at those strikes as far as the youngster Trachsel goes he shows great composure out there well I think a lot like Kevin Foster Steve Trachsel is starting to get everything over the plate and when he does that he's very successful count runs to three balls and no strikes trachsel's pitch is upstairs a bit too much they've been giving the high strike in this series has the Sun pyre and crew but that one a bit too high and Gerald Perry is on with a base on balls well that's not what you want to do and nothing to nothing game walking the leadoff man with a team that usually executes is not a good sign but you're down in the middle of the order you've got Witten and Zeile Zeile a good DoublePlay target Witten with a tremendous amount of power especially from the left side fact most of Witten's power is as a left-hand hitter five or six home runs have come as a lefty toss over the first chasing Perry back and you get a look at the log and Marc Whitten thus far today again another throw over the first base Trachsel works fairly quickly Steve it seems like when he doesn't have anyone on base but really slows down dramatically when a runner reaches most pitchers do but Rick Wilkins is mentioning it's very noticeable with Trachsel pitches fouled off out of play little balls in one strike the count I think the fact that he is a rookie certainly leads to that because he's thinking of a lot of different things number one he's thinking in a base running situation I have to vary my looks to first base should I use the straight leg kick or should I use the slide step I mean there's a lot of considerations still for Steve Trachsel things that will come automatically to a pitcher in his third or fourth year don't come quite as automatic to a man in just his first full year in the major leagues no balls one strike the count on Witten Perry doesn't have great base-stealing ability matter of fact he hasn't stolen a base yet this year he's been thrown out once grace holds Aman to left field Derek may one man down that brings up the third baseman Todd Zeile reached on an error in the second with Zeile who grounded into the double play in the ninth inning yesterday Brian Jordan had started out the ninth with an 11 pitch at-bat against Randy Myers the Cubs lead 3 to 1 Jordan took a base hit right back up the middle and todd zeile came up and grounded into a double play that catapulted Randy Myers to his 15th save of the year Jerald Perry off first and Wilkins was looking that way one ball no strikes Tom treble horn on the dugout steps today usually those pitch outs are called by mode hrabowski who's to the left of Tom treble horn and he will go through a different set of signs every situation with a man at first and Wilkins will always look over into the dugout at mow what a pitcher makes a lot of tosses the first base Steve is it in many respects because he doesn't have a great move over there or maybe he's got a slow delivery to the plate that type of thing he wants to keep the runner close I think he wants to let them run her know that he's thinking about him some pitchers go over there a little too much I used to try to go over there to set up a runner go over the couple of moves that weren't my best moves and then try to pick him off such a strike I would go over there if I thought it was a running situation like a two in one count you pretty much assured that a good baserunner is going to be going so you take a little extra time then you go to first base but to continue to throw over there six seven eight nine times that defeats the purpose how many throws to first base by the pitcher are called by the pitching coach like a motor a dribble ski will he call an occasional one once or twice occasionally but he's gone he's gonna call the pitch outs mostly Rick Wilkins is going to call the throws to first base and if you look in and take a look at Rick Wilkins when he puts up his thumb that's usually the sign to throw to first another toss over the first base and again we're not talking about Lou Brock over there one ball one strike one out there's a look at Wilkie with the sign and that's a fastball away hit in the air to right field where Sammy Sosa has plenty of room and he makes the catch so two men down Perry still at first and the hitter is Lewis Alice aya now let's say involved in that revolving door situation at second base at the Cardinals used for some time they played Hosea kendo occasionally they tried to give the job to Lois Alice a at the beginning and then they turned it over to her anima Pena but now they're back still switching at second still trying to find a combination trying to find a man who everyday can do the job one ball no strikes you know you wonder about your DoublePlay combination they have the great Ozzie Smith on the other side at shortstop but the second baseman shortstop working together the kind of chemistry that you would have you know you think back to Kessinger and Beckert here in Chicago and some of the other shortstop combinations shortstop second baseman comma combinations down through the years and I would imagine that puts a little uncertainty out there in certain situations you just don't have that flow perhaps one owe delivery misses outside and it's two balls and no strikes almost second baseman will tell you that really doesn't matter who's over there if the shortstop gives you a toss letter high you know he's going to get you the ball quickly and whoever plays second base for the Cardinals knows that they're playing with a Hall of Fame shortstop and more times than not Ozzy's going to get to the ball that helps to protect you by getting it to you quickly so there's not much of a drop-off with whoever goes to second base for st. Louis hit deep to right field Sosa on his horse this one is gone two run home run for Lewis Alice aya his third of the season and the Cardinals lead by the score of two to nothing one in the armor for young steve trachsel is his propensity to give up the long ball that's the staff leading 17th home run he's given up for Alice Seiya he got a fastball it was up and out over the plate not only his third home run RBIs number 13 and 14 so Joe Torre bringing Alice a off the bench as a starter for the first time in the series gets paid a 2-run dividend and here is Terry McGriff one ball no strikes McGriff flied out to left field to end the second inning Cardinals are leading by the score of two nothing that's a strike from the Southwest plane view camera we'll take a look at a beautiful swing by Lois Alice and you see the ball up he gets good extension this time and hits it on the button McGriff Dunston to grace and the inning is over but the Cardinals pick up the first two runs of the game a two-run homer by Luis Salas aya they leave the bases empty and we're going to the bottom of the fourth with st. Louis now ladyship cago to nothing I finally made it to the big leagues then my first game we get the call and I'm thinking how lucky can a guy get [Music] [Music] which would age for that fresh distinctive taste Buick Regal is winning the hearts of Americans who once drove imports now the demanding Buick quality and they appreciate Regals unique features like remote keyless entry dual zone climate controls and steering wheel radio controls a combination of features unavailable on to behold a Camry and Honda Accord in fact many former import owners now look overseas only because they enjoy the view it still bugs me that I waited to try Old Spice high endurance just because I thought all deodorants work the same though this proves the best better than the leading stick it evaporates less quickly it also lasts longer protects better you can't ignore that or this guarantee try it if you don't think it's the best call 1-800 you got to figure anyone that's serious about the odorant deserves a serious shot come on take the high endurance challenge from Old Spice I did Medical School is tough but life is a difficult operation Jimmy Smits and Diane Lane in vital signs tonight at 6 on WGN Oh Gary stones and the passionate role she was born to play monday at 11:30 on WGN channel 9 Suzanne Hoffman in the yellow on the left and John Sorensen on the right a couple of secretaries from WGN Suzanne Peter Walker secretary the general manager wgn-tv and Joan Jim's erwich's secretary to wonderful ladies they really are art grace leads it off for the Cubs here in the home half of the fourth takes a breaking pitch inside one ball no strikes Sutcliffe setup grace away last time up and then threw a fastball right on his hands it was only 81 miles an hour but because of the disparity of a couple of his pitches that one surprised mark and jammed em took a lot off of that pitch and Gracie bloops it foul down the left-field line and and you got to believe that there's a little added extra incentive for Rick Sutcliffe coming back to pitch as the opponent in a ballpark that meant so much to him for so many years in a cub uniform yep he had a lot of injury problems here after the before season but few players appreciated it and were so demonstrative in their act both on and off the field at how much they enjoyed and loved playing here in Chicago Rick involved with a lot of charity work he gave of his time willingly count is one and two and I think he caught teri McGriff on the backswing that time Ricky did too and we'll take a look at it teri McGriff trying to shake it off he might have got him on the backswing in the helmet and fortunately catchers have gone to the hard hat underneath the mask and watch grace he gets a curveball lowing in now watch the backswing as he comes around the bat flies and whacks Terry McGriff right on top of the helmet and mask Oh that'll wake you up in a hurry or put you to sleep fortunately he's got the helmet on back there one ball two strikes - and - it was a 52-foot changeup then very few guys swing at because a mound is 60 feet six inches from the plate 52-foot changeup you'd have to be way out in front on your and graces case your right foot to swing at that one oh yes you have to be charging the pitch before - to it here it is the second baseman Tala saya grace retired one man down [Applause] Rick Sutcliffe is really changing location well changing speeds very well so far the only man to solve him is the man you're looking at sammy sosa got a curve ball out over the plate in the first inning drove it into left field and that's been it as far as the cub offense so the Cubs even though they won yesterday they only managed three hits they continue to struggle offensively at home much to the dismay of both Larry Hines and Tom treble Horn who cannot figure out why the bats have gone dormant and Wrigley Field that's a strike no balls and one strike yeah the Cubs have produced more runs and a much higher team batting average on the road than they have at home it's just been a perplexing season in that regard that's eventually the record at home what is it 11 and 23 now believe that's it tried to time that one didn't quite get enough of it no balls and two strikes you're right Sutcliffe really changing speeds well and of course we saw a young Kevin foster do a brilliant job of changing speeds with his pitches yesterday and the difference is that Kevin Foster was changing speeds from 90 miles an hour on down right Rick Sutcliffe is changing speeds from 82 and 81 miles an hour on down so completely different indoctrination Oh two misses outside one ball two strikes now although most hitters don't realize it when a pitcher does something that he hasn't done all game like Sutcliffe just dropped down from the side more times than not it's going to be a curveball he will very rarely drop down and throw a fastball because it has a tendency to come back over the plate and get hit very hard by the right handers the one to Sosa behind that one slices it foul Sutcliffe we saw just a moment ago shaking off McGriff the young catcher two or three times there Steve and well a guy like Sutcliffe in a situation where the regular catcher Pegg naazy is getting a de awful well he called the game pretty much himself veteran pitchers pretty much adhere to the same philosophy that I used to use Wayne and that is I've never seen a column that said losing catcher the college says losing lives my own game and see what happens 1 2 delivery breaking ball into left field basin second hit of the day [Music] for sammy sosa and second hit of the day for the Cubs in the Southwest's plain view camera you'll see almost an identical swing to the first inning and Sammy Sosa gets another curveball out over the plate and there is the Southwest Airlines plane view camera high atop Wrigley Field bringing you those beautiful pictures around home plate so sad at first and Derrick may of the hitter I got a hit in 2a for six fielder's choice to end the first inning Steve I got to think that you're in a situation now where Sammy's going to take off now you have to bear in mind that mover Rick Sutcliffe it's a good one to first just a light toss that time he hasn't shown it yet he's just made some tosses over to first his good move his when he breaks the back leg and then comes to first a lot of baserunners houki off the back leg take a false step and they get picked off Sammy going may hits it into left field coming on for it Brian Jordan and Sosa has to retreat to first two men down it brings up Rick Wilkins the catcher and Sosa is still at first Wilkins struck out swinging in the second [Applause] the other thing you mentioned about Rick he does have a good move to first but his move to the plate seems very deliberate and he throws a lot of off-speed stuff he doesn't have as you meant to the fastball he had back in 1984 I would imagine if you take off with him delivering to the plate if he doesn't break that back foot as you mentioned that back leg that you got a chance and Sousa had a great jump that time on the hit and run certainly Rick is not difficult to steal against again a light toss over the first by uh cliff he does take a long time to deliver the ball because he brings it behind him if you notice Wayne he brings it behind and curls it somewhat and then comes to home plate so the move the motion home is very much of a two piece pitching motion and that gives a base runner next a couple of steps he is a notoriously slow worker with men on base matter back he's not quick with the bases empty anyway but really slow with men on base we are in the home half of the fourth the Cardinals leading by the score to nothing Wilkins asks for time of course one of the great in Cub history Rick Sutcliffe throwing the Jody Davis in 1984 with Joe or CELAC hitting the lately wire behind the plate and the Cubs won the division and everybody went crazy in Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh that was a memorable segment some great scenes here back in Chicago that year as well well the cat's been so starved for any type of winter at that point to win the division was quite a night no balls and two strikes as the count on the hitter Wilkins as Sosa continues to draw the attention of Rick Sutcliffe Terry McGriff thinking that Sosa is going to run here let's see if he does Oh to delivery Wilkins fouls it off Rick still has not used that good move to first base I would think o2 would be a pretty good time for him to use it so heads up semi Wilkins came in hitting at 2:16 he had a shot we're in the seventh inning I believe it was towards second base yesterday that I thought for sure was gonna get through Stoney and Pena made the play on it a pitch up high and tight and at that point you got the feeling I felt the same thing Rick Wilkins felt well when you're hitting 217 things like that happened you know you hit that ball so well it didn't get down and second base been able to make the play on it sometimes it seems like there's 15 guys out there catching everything you hit and that's what it seems like the Wilkins now a wave in a Miss strike three we'll keep may have just gotten a piece of it into the glove of McGriff and the Cubs go scoreless stranding a base runner in the fourth and we're heading to the fifth inning with a Cardinals leading to nothing [Music] they're thinning in lines a shot in a left-center field cut off by Tuffy Road Sutcliffe a big turnaround first retreats back to the bag the one thing you don't have to worry about is Rick Sutcliffe taking the extra-base now a good solid base runner with a good speed is gonna wind up its second here but Rick Sutcliffe doesn't have that kind of speed and Rick Sutcliffe having a word with Mark Grace asking Rick Sutcliffe is it that easy as Tuffy has some problems picking it up and they're laughing at one another Sutcliffe says look I'm getting you out with 75 mile an hour fast balls mark all you got to do is punch it to left-center and jose cardenal another former cub and a great favorite here in Chicago now the first base coach of the st. Louis Cardinals and he's talking to Rick Sutcliffe top of the order Brian Jordan 1 for 2 a double in the 3rd there's the Red Baron always has been a good hitter and can hit for power as pitchers go he has been a very good hitter and I remember the playoffs here in 1989 when he took one on the Sheffield trachsel's pitch Jordan squares to bunt chops it foul strike one we have a guest disclaimer for use of our audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the Chicago national league ballclub is prohibited now the one we read for the bowls isn't that long an outstanding effort there oh one delivery jam demand this one's out of play so Jordan down to the count no balls and two strikes I've been trying to pawn that off on Tommy for five years now he won't have any of it I'm so I'm glad that you decided to take it over and you did a splendid job I'm a little more gullible too Tommy you'll find well then I've got a restaurant for you in Arizona no balls two strikes on the hitter Jordan fastball just a bit low and outside Jordan has been the odd man out most of the time in the outfield and yet this former football player has a chance to be an excellent baseball player if he gets the advance he's had 149 of them this year but this man needs a year where he gets 500 at-bats and he could put up some pretty good numbers in the major leagues 1 2 pitch could be to Dunston to Sanchez took grace and they turn it over six four three in there two men down there's not much doubt about this one it's easy as soon as Dunson gets a handle on it the quick flip it goes six four three and another hundred dollars to come scare from the good folks at car wrecks muffler and brakes so Jordan grounds into his sixth double play of the year brings up the Wizard of Oz Ozzie Smith singled in the first round it out of the third one for two on the day and with two men out Buechele nonetheless on the infield grass just a bit Ozzy tried to lay down a bunt earlier in the game takes a strike here that little kid they're looking at a scorecard say hey I don't have enough marks on my scorecard here need a little more action from the Cubbies one ball one strike Dave Otto continues to throw in the bullpen so next inning Steve Trachsel due up fourth and time Trevor Horn making sure that the bullpen is ready to go 1-1 pitch paired to jam him and he pops it into left field where Derek may is there and the inning is over no runs a base hit no errors nobody left we're going to the bottom of the fifth and the Cardinals still lead the Cubs by the score of two to nothing [Music] you're in the finals ma'am so the great tastes that won't fill you up and never let you down and make it a Bud Light match like charcoal that's just the right amount of lighter fluid already added that's why there's only one match for match like match light from Kingsford he packs heavy she packs light she wears silk he wears wool he's comfortable at 68 degrees she prefers 72 good thing they own a Buick Park Avenue with available dual zone climate control 72 for her 68 for him too bad everything isn't as accommodating as Park Avenue from Buick the new symbol for quality in America I don't need some fancy aftershave to tell me I'm a man and I don't need some expensive cologne to make time with the ladies I use skin bracer it smells great it also cools my skin tones it up and takes care of it after a good close shave I don't need anything more confidence is very sexy don't you think skin bracer a real aftershave i menin [Music] Wayne Larrivee Steve stone Tom Brennaman and Wrigley Field in Chicago as we go to the bottom of the fifth inning with the Cardinals leading to nothing Tuffy Road Steve Buechele ray Sanchez the scheduled hitters roads against Rick Sutcliffe he's yielded just two hits through the first four toughy over one trying to bunt his way on but bunts it foul but todd zeile was in close thinking that tough he might try that and he had a pretty good idea just not much execution that time so Tuffy trynna started off here in the fifth so far Rick Sutcliffe has been mystifying everybody but Sammy Sosa Sammy has both of the Cubs hits here this afternoon Tuffy has spent most of the season leading off and playing centerfield for the Cubs vo wanna the count even at one and one one of the things that I'll never forget is his three homer performance in three trips to the plate against doc Gooden on opening day here at Wrigley Field on a cold day on my dad I don't think Doc's gonna forget that one either I don't think anybody ever hit three home runs off in one game he dumps this into left field Oh Jordan nice play Cunningham [Applause] [Music] it's an outstanding effort by Brian Jordan this shows you his athleticism on a sinking line drive he was playing shallow but this one's sinking almost to the grass and he comes on to make the play it's a good positioning by the Cardinal outfield and after that just a fine play by Jordan good speed across the Cardinal outfield here Steve Buechele grounded out in the second inning Oh for one one ball no strikes tres Armstrong defensive end of the Chicago Bears joined us tres dressed for the game as if we were in Miami there is it's very warm today yeah breaking pitch misses that time two balls of those strikes the bullpen continues to work which means that both Steve Buechele and Ray Sanchez have the fate of Steve Trachsel squarely in their hands somebody gets on Trachsel is going to be taken down that's a strike in it's two in one there's a diehard Cub fan all his life been a cup fan all his life I'll bet that's actually Billy Barty on the right side curving a foul oh man a long run by Ala saya the second baseman who lost his footing just as he approached the wall long run but in a brief an abrupt stop yes and ala saya realizing that he was getting pretty close to the bricks decides to take the slide and I think he's going to come away unscathed you know what those steep if he was a quarterback they'd marked that about four or five yards back where he began his slice no they wouldn't get credit for the full slide two and two the count now and some of these workers feel like that brick wall I'm sure we'll get a microphone on trace Armstrong here in a moment to to pitch it back up the middle into center field but Ray Lankford is there two men down here's that play let's see where they mark this slide right here Alice say I'm just about even with the pitching rubber on the left side of the bullpen yeah he went another four or five yards they would not have given him that well tres Armstrong great to have you with us you're right you're getting close it won't be long now two men down and here is Sanchez no balls in one strike now the count Platteville is always such a pleasure isn't it in the summer time I was just telling Thom Brenneman that we really are not as smart as baseball players you guys go to Mesa and we go to Platteville Wisconsin you're pretty familiar you're probably pretty familiar with Mesa I take it I know a little bit about Mason yeah my younger days oh one delivery hit in the air by Sanchez driving Jordan back to the warning track but he tracks it down Sanchez didn't get all of that one but gave it a good ride nonetheless and the Cubs are retired in order we're heading to the six then the Cardinals maintain up to nothing lead [Music] Rangers Cherokees pathfinders lasers any pickup or 4x4 or do we have a tire for you the tough LTX like truck series information here's the real beauty of rust-oleum protective coatings a tough barrier against the elements Rostow leo the name that means protection we introduces freshness dating a date stamped on every Diet Pepsi that guarantees the taste you love will be at the absolute peak of freshness freshness dating from Diet Pepsi the offal Wrigley Field in Chicago Cubs and Cardinals ramping up the weekend series of the rubber man to the moment the Cardinals leading to nothing and Steve Trachsel gets set to face Ray Lankford Lankford first pitch popped him up into left field down the line and Derek Mae has time to make the catch so one man down here in the sixth later tonight on WGN Diane Lane stars in vital signs it's the premiere of WGN six o'clock Sunday movie and for our Chicago viewers a reminder Star Trek Deep Space nine will be seen tonight at its new time eight o'clock one man down and it brings up Gerald Perry Perry Oprah one he walked and scored in the fourth well the bears one time you know you were talking about Mesa the Bears one time what two years ago went down there for a mini camp well he's been about a week down there Mesa we're at Mesa Community College and it was a nice week in March yeah yeah the fields were great the weather was warm normally at our mini camps here in April we've had snow before we've had some pretty rotten weather so it was really great to go to Mesa but you know anybody can go down there in March but go down there for a mini camp in July now that's a pleasure it's a hundred and fifteen there yesterday even the Cardinals move out of Phoenix for their training camp they go up to Flagstaff they have to they'd like to have a team for the season that's right we play them we play Arizona at in Phoenix in Tempe I think the second preseason game and even though it's a night game it'll still be about a hundred degrees at kickoff time well buddy Ryan has got that town really juiced up for those this year they've signed a lot of free agents the defense is going to have a completely different look and as you know where everybody goes it is exciting one way or the other he is great to follow in the media well I think they'll be competitive I know he's got the players they're hungry and and the players believe in him and believe in their system and as you guys know that's half the battle tres how about playing without Richard dent on your defensive line well Richard Richard no doubt about it you know I know there were some things said about Richard in the offseason about the way he plays but you know in my mind he's still one of the great pass rushers in the game and one of the greatest to ever played the game so we're gonna miss Richard but Harry got under that one may calls off Dunstan - we've got some guys have got to step up I've got to be a little bit better Alonso Spellman's really got to come along you know we can't look back at the past and say yeah what if we'd had Richard you know he's gone he's gonna go on and play great for Frisco and we just got to have some guys step up and pick up the slack Trace Armstrong defensive end of the Chicago Bears great to have you with us enjoy your night slappy good seeing you guys good seeing you always nice to talk with Trace Armstrong Marc Whitten the right fielder over to today two men down and this one hit shot into left field but Derrick May tracks it down so may with three putouts in the sixth and the Cardinals go quietly were heading to the bottom of the sixth of a to nothing st. Louis game Chicago Cubs baseball on WGN is brought to you by Pepsi be young have fun drink Pepsi I wasn't even looking when my old boss called I said he had an opening more responsibilities and office one for you and one for that very special person who sits next to you the saber from Buick the new symbol for quality in America the good news about shopping Chicago's famous Magnificent Mile is that you can walk for one great store to the next the bad news about shopping Chicago's fingaz Magnificent Mile is that you can walk from one great store to the next Chicago is [Music] call for free visitor's guide medical school is tough but light is a difficult operation Jimmy Smits and Diane Lane in vital signs tonight at 6:00 on WGN Ben Stein Brenda Harry Caray's looking on about what 39,000 friends of Harry Caray here or there abouts wishing Harry of the best in a speedy recovery here's Mike Maqsood Ian pinch hitting for the pitcher Steve Trachsel takes a pitch up high ball one Maqsood Ian just his fourth trip to the plate and Sutcliffe with the one old delivery hit on a line to right-field base hit [Applause] maksoon Ian were the third hit of the day for the Cubs let's pause here for station identification this is America's number one sports station wgn-tv Chicago [Music] so maqsudi another pinch-hitting role girls a shot to right field that it brings up Shawon Dunston nobody out run around first fine job by Steve Trachsel six innings two runs four hits a couple of walks in a strikeout and what a job he did maqsudi and rounding third he will score Dunston is in with a stand-up double neck sitting at the plate Inez [Music] I'll take a great job by the Cardinals of cutting down the runner when Maqsood ian was heading to her third I didn't think they had a chance at all well take another look at it and from the Southwest plane view camera we'll take the collision at the plate Terry McGriff taking the full brunt of it from Mike Mack's Odeon and an outstanding relay great execution by the Cardinals it goes from Jordan to Ozzy to Terry McGriff and you can't do a relay any better than that and so Tony Muser taking the gamble that the two relay throws had to be perfect and they were perfect we'll watch it again as Dunson takes it high off the wall you see Ozzie setting up the one hop throw a strike and that's one of the reasons I Z is going to the Hall of Fame and one of the reasons why the Cardinals have won so many one-run games one man out runner on second and the hitter Mark Grace takes ball one I'll tell you you know when you saw that replay and the relay throw being made Maqsood ian was already well beyond third-base I thought for sure he'd score easily on that play but as you mentioned great execution Jordan to Ozzie Smith to McGriff the catcher that pitch in the dirt gets away from the catcher McGriff and Dunston is over the third on a wild pitch so suck but throwing his third wild pitch of the year no chance for Terry McGriff that time and it puts Mark Grace in a perfect situation this changeup bounces off the front of the plate over the shoulder of McGriff and Dunston thinking maybe it'll get away a little further taking the big aggressive turn but having to put on the brakes you watch it right in front as it hits the dirt and the plate simultaneously and takes the big hop so now the infield in at all four positions the bullpen up and going Joe Coleman going out to have a word with Rick Sutcliffe as the Cubs have hit the ball hard twice this inning right-hander the left-hander warming up in the bullpen for manager Joe Torre [Music] and now they break up the conference on the mound Rick Sutcliffe has breezed basically to this point he's given up a couple of shots of this inning previous to this he had given up just two hits in the first five frames Mark Grace with a count of two balls and no strikes [Applause] John hey bein is the right-hander up in the Cardinal pen that pitch in the dirt again and McGriff has to block it from Dunston stays at third in the count runs to three and OH well Sutcliffe really has averaged a little under five innings per start so he hasn't gone deep into too many games three balls no strikes that's a strike in it's three and one [Applause] and feel back now they're going to concede the run for the out and Mark Grace needs some contact which he usually makes 3 1 delivery it on the ground right side this will get the run home and we'll say it aperi retiring grace two men down of the Cubs are on the board trailing 2 to 1 I'm behind number 29 and so with the infield back you know you need a ground ball Mark Grace gets it and now the one man that is given Rick Sutcliffe a whole lot of problems coming up [Music] bases empty for sammy sosa he is singled twice in both of them have been ropes [Applause] we're in the bottom half of the sixth inning Cardinals leading two to one one ball no strikes well I would think if Joe Torre could get six and the lead out of Rick Sutcliffe and that might be it right now he's starting to steer the breaking ball throwing a lot of pitches in the dirt and although Sutcliffe is just below the 65 pitch mark which is not much through six innings looks like he's starting to tire somewhat that's a strike and it's 1 and Juana when five and two thirds last Monday holding the expose to three runs did Rick Sutcliffe but did not make the decision in an eighth for loss to Montreal two balls and one strike Sutcliffe suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out for a good portion of what middle April to mid-may and he has battled injuries ever since that sterling season of 1984 the siyoung year didn't break enough to get that one over and it's 3 & 1 whenever pitchers have leg problems you can pretty much take it to the bank if they come back a little early they're gonna wind up with arm problems compensating because it can't push off quite as much and sutcliffe has had his share of leg problems over the course of his career 3 one is chap foul and the count fills 2 3 & 2 and he's always been you know Stevie is so conscientious that about his craft that he wants to come back and he wants to pitch maybe earlier than he should in some of these situations that we saw over the course of his career here in Chicago I think Rick realizes that he's just running out of arm and there's not much time left for him so he wants to take advantage of every opportunity he gets to go to the mound in the major leagues you're watching a great veteran a man who has put together some just phenomenal seasons but there's not many more pitches left in that arm the payoff Sosa into centerfield ray Langford and the inning is over but the Cubs pick up a run on a couple of base hits there were no errors and nobody left on base Tom Brennaman will be back to take you through the final three at the end of six it's the Cardinals - or the Cubs won [Music] call us about volunteering and junior achievements new elementary school Brennaman sponsored glee club been attendance here today I thought they were sending a message to use stony no they're full of Glee time that's definitely you know not really the new cub pitcher is right-hander Jim Bulger fully coming on looking up at a one run deficit fine job by Steve Trachsel and Bollinger on for the 22nd time four of them starts 3-2 record for 18 the RA there you look at the numbers this year bollinger did a solid job as a starting pitcher in emergency spots this year in fact he wanted to remain as part of that rotation and you really can't blame him after the way he pitched nobody becomes odd-man-out especially if mike morgan is healthy and mike morgan threw the ball very well in Florida and he'll get another start on Tuesday and then we'll see what happens from there on the ground foul why to third watch the play at the plate and we'll take a look at the replay Jordan gets it high off the wall now his job is to get it right to Ozzie Smith he does that perfectly Ozzie one-hop throws to Terry McGriff who's blocking the plate and no place for Maqsood Ian to go he gives him full force but McGriff holds on that ball in the dirt but he checked his swing went around too far and Jerry Crawford tells Todd Zeile you're out of there one banner one strikeout for Jim Bulger and zeal is over three and it's best Bollinger is one of the best curveballs around and when you're owing to this is a great spot for it so Wilkins puts on the tag and todd zeile says are you kidding me and Jerry Crawford says never on Sunday whoa bad not bad I like that there aren't many that what I like here's Alice eya he had the big home run down the right-field line on Trachsel with Gerald Perry aboard back in the fourth inning and the Cardinals lead two to one here in the seventh this time Alice a is showing the but it missed down low two balls no strikes a rare home run by Alice a a his third of the season Cubs came back with an RBI groundout by Mark Grace to bring in Dunston from third in the last two the 6th and here's a 2 o is on the inside edge who shell remains pulled in on the grass down at third just in case Alice a elects to drop one down there and Rob Murphy now the left-hander getting warmed up in the Cardinal bullpen into centerfield a hit it's been a good day for Alice Seiya he lined out hard to Derrick May back in the second inning well I gotta believe that Joe Torre has got to be pretty happy with the six innings he's got not a Rick Sutcliffe and odds are that he will go to the bench but you never know Red Baron might want to go a little bit longer but I think they're already declaring they're gonna take him down because there's a pinch hitter loosening up Bernard Gilkey is a man with a helmet on in the on deck circle boy Sutcliffe pitched a fine game here today if indeed his afternoon is through in six innings only allowed four hits in a run he did not walk a batter while Fanning - he looks sharp and then Rick Sutcliffe was outstanding today and he did it completely different than Steve Trachsel as you would expect he changed speeds he got everything over the plate and so Rick Sutcliffe still with a little life left and you know that he came in with a special feeling for Wrigley Field and he wanted to be at his best in front of the fans who appreciated him so much for so long and he knows his good buddy Harry Caray's watching today they were they were they were good friends they enjoyed being around one another a great deal still do now and Rick's asked to be remembered to Harry that he was thinking about Harry's absence from the booth but don't worry Rick he'll be back in the not-too-distant future there goes the runner and it's swung and fouled back one and one one Terri McGriff McGriff today is lying too well and grounded to short [Music] some treble horn with Chuck cotta air to his right talking over exactly what type of flexibility they have in the late innings their one run down not much offense but they're going to be looking at the Cardinal pen one and one the Terry McGriff's runner not going this time and it's singled into right field they can the turn is Alice a he's coming to third here comes a throw and it hit him in the back and on to second base goes mcgrill so the Cardinals runners at second and third and only one out Sammy's going to be charged with an error but he made a pretty good throw unfortunately right into the back of Alice a oh that's the fourth error of the Year by Sammy and it looked like he had a shot at Alice eya but the ball hits him right in the back on the fly so here comes Alice a here comes the throw and unfortunately they arrive at the same spot at the same time and Bucky Dent motioning for entha get down and on the play McGriff goes to second and that's where the air is charged so Sutcliffe will indeed be taken down as you see the ball hitting Alice a in the back and here's pinch-hitter Bernard Gilkey the cub infield pulls in it's a 2-1 st. Louis lead they're gonna walk in yep take their chances with Bryan Jordan [Applause] well Jordan grounded into a double play in the fifth inning that coming against Steve Trachsel and that's what Tom treble horn is banking on here in the seventh [Applause] so there's ball four to Gilkey you'll trot on up the line and here comes Tom treble horn left-hander Dave Otto is down in the bullpen with a right-hander coming up you don't figure there's any way in the world they're gonna make a change scores around baseball today see the Marlins beating up on Montreal that game is gone to the ninth inning Marlin trying to regroup a wild one in Philadelphia a rematch of last year's National League Championship Series Phillies leading by one Ryan Klesko two home runs in that game pirates bidding to win their 6th straight and then tonight the comfortable 7-nothing lead over the Mets they're underway after a lengthy rain delay at Riverfront in Cincinnati rubber game of that series and the Dodgers after blowing a three nothing lead have now jumped back in front of Houston by a run and the Giants for nothing leading over Colorado at Mile High Stadium [Applause] bases-loaded and Wilkins has to be on his toes because you figure to go with a curveball or two to Jordan and Bollinger has a couple of wild pitches this year Jordan this is on a good breaking ball down and away Jordan today one of three he's flied to right double down the left-field line and his Tony mentioned in the fifth inning bounced into a double-play Alice a up McGriff Gilkey the runners race and Michelle even with the bags at first and third the middle infield back looking for the double play in the dirt it'll bring in a run and the Cardinals down lead three to one well that's what we were talking about the wild pitch and Bullinger has picked up his third now with Wilkins calling the curveball knowing it was going to be away he didn't expect it that far away and Tom treble horn not too happy because the strategy was to walk the bases loaded get the double play this one sweeping well outside Wilkins can't get to it and the Cardinals have another one they've extended their lead and now the infield is forced to come in at all four positions one in one to Brian Jordan with the griffon third Gilkey now at second base and the pitch check swing bouncer is that a fair ball yes it is and Jordan tagged out I can't believe that Jordan didn't run that ball was in fair territory it doesn't matter where Wilkins is it matters where the ball is and you can't do your own umpiring so Brian Jordan kind of an embarrassing moment for him this ball is tapped and the ball is in fair territory heads-up play by Wilkins you see him move there good call by Jerry Crawford once again who's been on top of most everything today at a good call at first base and a good call here [Applause] Ozzie Smith runners at second and third the infield moves back with the exception of boos shell at third guarding against the but [Applause] missed outside and lowball one Ozzy one of three singled in the first inning is bounced to them out and flied to left this could be the biggest at-bat of the game for the Cubs a base hit here gets you to and things get a little tough because the Cubs aren't scoring you get them out here you're only two down you got a good chance to atone out of Z Smith well you got to believe that if bully does not get Ozzie Smith it's going to be Otto against Langford McGriff had three Gilkey at 2nd 2 men out the 2 O is ball three [Applause] Cardinals are run here in the inning lead by a pair and now the three oldest myth you figured taking all the way and it's ball four so they're loaded again second walk in the inning by bullinger and that'll be it for him treble horn is already signaled for the left-hander Dave Otto in the bullpen so when we come back Cardinals will have the bases loaded two men out a 3-1 lead here in the seventh and Ray Lankford is coming up [Music] maximize the merriment to maximize the grand zoom maximov of the movements in the song [Music] get your shot with the Kenan sure shot zoom maqsuum X from Canada it was love at first sight and this is one affair that's still going strong half a century later it's the story of a st. Louis orphan who joined one of America's greatest families the game of baseball I'm Bob Costas World War two still raged when harry first heard the call and he's been calling it his way ever since join me for a tribute to and a look back at this uniquely American love story When Harry Met baseball Monday July 11th on WGN channel 9 [Music] Cardinals are run in here in the seventh inning leading three to one they haven't loaded with two out and now on to face Ray Lankford his left-hander Dave Otto I don't own one this year there you look at the numbers he are a 476 on for the 20th time [Music] eight strikeouts 16 walks that's not a very good percentage and he inherits the bases-loaded two outs here in the seventh Cobb's looking up at a two-run deficit his career numbers against st. Louis are very impressive Annie RA of 208 and he's got a very dangerous hitter to face in Ray Lankford who leads the club in home runs and does have very good speed over the American League today Cleveland lost it home for the first time in a month and a half yesterday they'll lose again more than likely today Milwaukee late at home in front of Boston for three Minnesota pounding Kansas City leading by 10 in the seventh just underway Texas in California Detroit a run in the first inning at Oakland and the White Sox will take on Seattle later this afternoon and Toronto will play at home to Baltimore tonight a little bit high want to know to Lankford with the bases juiced what a matchup it was yesterday Jack McDowell against Randy Johnson when the White Sox came out on top 2 2 1 and a fine pitcher's duel [Applause] Lankford with the bases loaded two out ground balls second base this will do it Sanchez blow is him out and that will end the inning for the Cardinals get a run on two hits and errant leave three we have for the bottom half of the seventh inning it is a 3-1 st. Louis advantage [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] far [Applause] we're in ice-t real Washington [Music] this is my husband Ray everybody knows ray and Aiden and everyone knows the story he fell off the roof claiming it's playing his drain and he fell right on his head he was in bad shape and we got on scene he could have died really easy Aflac just worked out great Aflac covers the unexpected cost of getting better so you can get on with life I would say he's very hard-headed when you come to a Pep Boys Super Center you'll be amazed by its size they've got over 24,000 items all with brand names you know and trust many with lifetime warranties Raybestos BorgWarner TRW gabriel Purolator CR and Bendix everything you need to keep your car looking good and running smoothly day or night even on Sunday come to Pep Boys and drive away happy Floyd is back in business weekday mornings at 9:00 on WGN channel 9 [Music] three one st. Louis leading Bernard Gilkey remains in the game to play left field over in the center goes Brian Jordan and now on the pitch left-hander Rob Murphy he'll face Derek made to begin the inning flyball into right field caught by Whitman one pitch and one out and the hope that the Cubs have is they've always handled Rob Murphy he comes in two three and three and he RA a 439 on for the 36th time with a couple of saves 26 and 2/3 innings 22 hits he's given up six home runs he walked nine he's fan nineteen there you look at the numbers his career numbers against the Cubs aren't overly impressive and Eddie Zambrano looking out at him as a pinch-hitter you can see an ER a way up there for Murphy against the Cubs Zambrano batting for Rick Wilkins who is old for 2 with a pair of strikeouts today boy Rick having a tough tough year [Applause] swinging a foul ball on a plane you could see the frustration particularly in Wilkins face after he struck out in the fourth inning on that little check swing well the league has made an adjustment to Rick Wilkins you know you don't hit 30 home runs and hit 300 and these national league pitchers are not going to sit back and continue to let you found them they're going to make adjustments to you there's a lot of advance scouts there's a lot of looks they had at Rick Wilkins all last year when he just started all season and the national league pitchers have adjusted now the ball is in the quarter Rick Wilkins he's going to have to make some adjustments Tommie and right now he's got two spots where they get him consistently swinging at pitches up he's swinging at breaking balls down he's going to have to lay off one or the other or he's just not going to hit all that much 2 & 1 December Anto [Applause] Rob Murphy on the relief of Rick Sutcliffe former cub was just outstanding here today six innings four hits one run did not walk a batter while Fanning - and he's in line for what would be his fourth win of the season popped up foul ground parry over near the dugout and he won't get it come ago is no play that's a tough play for Gerald parry and it is ruled no play the ball wasn't up there all that long and parry having to go right to the dugout not really charging at rail as you would expect he doesn't want to take a tumble into the dugout so it falls harmlessly and it is um Bronto has another life that's a pretty good tumble too if you go over that railing into the dugout here there deep into the ground [Applause] outfield straightaway one out nut on last to the seventh LeBron Oh a better cut that time fouled it back well you can join cut manager Tom treble horn Tuffy wrote steve trachsel host of cup players and coaches for the 3rd annual all-star kids clinic sponsored by Dial soap and WGN television can learn it all from the pros take it's just $10 per person and a number to dow for information 404 see UBS in the city tell me there was an interesting article in the newspaper written by Ron Berger who it says is a special to the Tribune he's not a staff writer for them but he does contribute and last night he doubled as a singer at the banquet at the racetrack last night so he put together a band Rick calendar a man who does the sports writer show was one of the guys in the band also it was quite an evening but we'll get the article in a second why ball shallow left a late jump by guilty and he won't get there Zambrano will stop at first with a broken bat floater in the left field he'll key just ended the game and he did not have a good jump on that ball off some bra toes back it's a good hard swing and I think that Gilkey was fooled he saw the good heart swing and didn't get the immediate break you see him come into your picture late he doesn't get to it it goes as a base hit and as he out there to help him out when he can't get to it and so the late break came back to haunt him well the gist of the article and the headline is when players watch they see a different game the gist of the article Tommy is about players who watch television watch the baseball games but don't really take into consideration or don't pay any attention to what the announcers have to say during the course of the game and they list a whole lot of different players that have pretty much the same idea and will to it after Mike Perez comes into the game [Music] search for the great sharks now showing on the five story I'm the next screen the Museum of Science and Industry legend rides again in the one do we worry about one measly police car worth several but before they bust the Bandit it appears as though he was all about jurisdiction brace yourself and action pack exclusive could get rough could get tough together Wednesday night at 7:00 on WGN channel 9 3 1 ballgame one on one out here in the bottom of the seventh and now on the pitch Mike Perez Mike Perez comes in with 12 saves he also comes in with an e ra at 733 and a 2 and 2 record on for the 28th time and he has really struggled at times out of the bullpen there you look at the numbers this year but back to the article with players saying they don't listen to what a lot of the broadcaster's have to say and in some respects I can understand that Tommy but for some of the players many of them have had a year to three-fitty 4 in the major leagues you have some broadcasters like Harry Caray that has seen baseball for 50 years and they do have some things to say that younger players certainly should listen to because there's a lot of experience up here in the booth with many of the especially to color analyst not necessarily myself but that group but a man over there Jim kaat pitched in this league for 24 years and when he makes an observation I would think that there would be some younger players who would like to hear and take in what he has to say you take a look at Jim kaat right there a lot of guys playing this game on the field right now that have no understanding of it this will be a double Louis leading mark parrot will go in behind the plate taking over for Rick Wilkins staying in the game after pinch-hitting in right field at he Zambrano and moving from right over into Center is Saab and Chuck creme loosening in the bullpen so I know probably on to face Perry and may quit and hit from the right side which is his weak side and then with any difficulties Chuck Krim will probably come in swinging a foul ball straight back just underneath our booth Perry Oh for two he walked and scored on Alice's home run in the fourth inning as you get a look at Chuck grim Jerell Perry has started all three games of this weekend series in place of the injured Greg Jefferies who is spiked on the heal on Wednesday and required stitches and I kind of thought that we would see him here today they had outfitted a special shoe for him which would have allowed him to play but apparently Joe Torre wants to make sure that he's entirely healthy before he risks him when you've got a player with the talent of Jefferies there is no real need to rush him back and maybe lose a couple of weeks so they're taking an extra day of precautions but he will be available to pinch-hit if need be today 1 & 2 2 Perry Jefferies just season a 333 batter 34 runs batted in now there's a great shot then of course families come not only here at Chicago but all over the Midwest all across America to Wrigley Field and generation after generation young Cub fan having a great time with dad today and trying to take off his right ear and yeah the guy thinks that's a barrel full laughs because he's he's got his hands all sticky and he figures well I'll make sure that things stick to my dad's here for the rest of the game today there's a mobile seat the best seat in the house just off the outer edge the three - now - Gerald Perry wool he's spinning from his heels right there and fouled it back now jose bautista getting loosened up in the bullpen so this is quickly as Chuck Krim was throwing he's now sitting down and Batista getting loose maybe they didn't like the way Chuck was throwing in the air to shallow left Dunstan will drift to the outfield grass and make the play one away [Applause] join mark gray Sammy Sosa and the entire Cubs team for an evening of luxury aboard Lake Michigan's premier cruise ship The Odyssey Cubs care cruise Wednesday August 10th tickets two hundred bucks a person with all the proceeds benefiting Cubs care charities reservations limited be sure to book your cruise today three one two four oh four covers well that was a great great evening last year I certainly enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to it again this year ah yes on the high seas Young Arnold Harris will be wearing that sailor's cap that night his wife Doc boating shoes looking good right falling one strike I got a feeling unless they race the horses on the top deck I'm not gonna be there - Louis three to one this one's starting to get a little tense in the late innings as Steve Buechele leads it off the Cubs trying to do some damage to Mike Perez blue shell today is bounced to short in line to center he'll be followed by race and chef and then we'll see more than likely I guess mark parent was inserted into that 9th spot 1 and 1/2 Steve Buechele Cubs will welcome the Pirates under Jimmy Leyland beginning tomorrow night opener of the three-game series between the Cubs and the red-hot pirates pirates are back to 500 who would have thunk it on the ground easy play for Zeile one away Willie banks Steve cook in the opener tomorrow night on Tuesday Mike Morgan and John Lieber and then on Wednesday Anthony young against Denny Neagle then it's off to the roads Tony to play those houstonians and they're pretty tough in their home ballpark the Cubs have four of them against the Astros who were trying to catch Cincinnati in a race that looks to be a pretty good one here in the National League Central Cincinnati really adding to their offense Jim Bowden doing a fine job putting together a ball club over there in Cincinnati in the air in the right field hit pretty well went and drifting over near the line and makes the grab where's everybody climbed all over Jim Bowden he had to take the heat when Tony Perez was fired 44 games in the last season but I think all of a sudden a year later the youngest general manager in the major leagues at least when he got the job his drawing rave reviews around baseball you'd have to say Tommy that that was a pretty courageous move and that he hired one of the all-time great Reds a man absolutely beloved in the city of Cincinnati and yet he just felt that for whatever reason Tony was not the man for the job and so he made the move it was shocking to people around Cincinnati and talked about heat he took a lot of heat but he made the move that he thought was the best for the ballclub and most general managers feel the same way they're not worried much about personalities or hurt feelings what they're worried about is winning baseball games and he thought that would be what it took to get the Reds to a position where they could contend and this year they are in that position with a few additions to the ballclub Glen Allen Hill pops it up shallow left-center field Ozzie Smith saying it's mine any minute 1 2 3 4 Perez in the 8th we go to the night Cardinals 3 and the Cubs won [Music] Chicago Cubs baseball on WGN is brought to you by Southwest Airlines offering frequent flights and low everyday pairs which is why flying Southwest Airlines is just plain smart flying to st. tonight at 6:00 on WGN the end of eight Cardinals three runs six hits Cubs one run five hits they committed a couple of errors here today Cardinals have stranded five that Cubs have left only three and now on the pitch third fourth pitcher used by Tom treble horn this time right-hander Jose Bautista pretty good job by Dave Otto and relief of Jim Bollinger who took over from Steve Trachsel and so Jose Bautista comes in his 40th appearance of the year the record one in three the ER a 335 and his job very simple get out of this inning without giving anything up and hope the offense can do something with Mike Perez who's throwing very well they're the numbers on Batista this year you see the walk the strikeout ratio 3 to 1 and that's excellent Terry McGriff 1 of 3 he single to right field his last time up when the Cardinals scored in that seventh inning he hit the ball to right field at Alice a low went first to third in Sammy's throw from right hit Alice a in the back with McGriff going on to second base and then a wild pitch brought in to run 1 & 2 to the Cardinal catcher for an art Gilkey waits on deck [Applause] clubs in danger of falling 2 11 and 24 here at home and with their 3-1 win yesterday Cubs won at Wrigley Field for only 11th time all year they have won more than one game during only one previous homestand that is just unbelievable its back when they went 7 and 2 against the Marlins Padres and Giants in the middle of May Rene Arocha to stop her for the time being gets warmed up who shall bobbled has time throws grace stretches wide and fiction clean out of the dirt good play by Mark Grace was fortunate it was teri McGriff going down the line and Mark Grace realizing this would be a floater across the diamond stretched out just about as far as he could get who shell stays with it floats it across and there is Mark Grace doing almost the splits to pick this one up reminiscent of one of his heroes Keith Hernandez at first base good job by grace yoky chops one foul he came on as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning for Rick Sutcliffe and Gill key was intentionally walked but getting back to the home stands this season of course it comes started the year oh-for-three against New York when oh and five against Atlanta in Houston one of four against Colorado and Cincinnati when they finally ended that twelve game losing streak at home to begin the year they had the big run against the Marlins Padres and Giants in May but then the end of May early June one in six against the Phillies in Montreal the only win was the first game against Philadelphia and then Oh for three against the Dodgers June 10th 11 and 12 well I'm gonna go on in the line and tell you they're gonna win more than one game on this homestand well you're really going out on a line we're out on a limb wherever it is you want to go out on or both tomorrow night the Cubs in a pirates seven o'clock we'll get started Steve cook a left-hander and Willie banks the right-hander we invite you to be with us there you go that give it right back give it right back that's my hat and I want it and you're not getting my cotton candy either but holding it out there banging in the face hence red tees oh there's a shot uh-huh see another one yes little wait little late nope boom right now that's great the fly ball in it let's enter is a neat rifting back and they're two away she's really letting him have it down there [Applause] now she's assigning to cheer she's got her hat back as the Tweety Bird sweatshirt and not even thinking of giving her brother any of that cotton candy not a chance my sister used to do that all the time to me always banging me in the face was something foul ball third base side boohoo shell over and it's out of play when do you think it's going to heal I think there is still very serious repercussions from those jolts to the Basques you ought to take a look at a cat scan maybe it'll help you out well I'm afraid what they'd find you kidding me Brian Jordan is a good solid player but more times than not he doesn't get near the advance you would think he would get because there's a talented outfield in st. Louis he's down on to Jordan today one of four he had to double back in the third inning Cubs are trailing 3 to 1 we're in the top of the ninth you're looking to the bottom of the 9th it'll be the top of the order Dunston grace and sosa 1 & 2 to Jordan and apparently Arocha will be the man to try and close it out in an interesting conversion for Rene Arocha we saw it after got pounded as a starter one more time against the Cubs he came in the next night as a reliever and since then he has been the stopper of this team still a ball and two strikes on Brian Jordan very rarely will you see a pitcher with the ability and the stuff to go from the starting rotation to the stopper down the line in the bullpen more times and not failed starters will be the guys that are used in the middle occasionally you'll find a failed starter is a guy who was a setup man if he's got good enough stuff but very rarely will you see him become a closer and the old-time man to do just that former cub Dennis Eckersley that was a rare conversional boy Dennis Eckersley certainly had a good run at it in Oakland on the ground of boos shell and that will end the inning so the tease two retires his side in order Cubs come to bat in the bottom of the night hoping for a rally they trail the Cardinals grito on it's a major breakthrough in Auto protectant technology formula 2001 super protective it refrigerators disposals I mean if you can smell it up here she needs a little Clorox bleach down there Clorox bleach it's America's home remedy Oh Derek stones and the passionate role she was born to play Monday at 11:30 on WGN channel 9 Cubs coming to bat here at home in the bottom of the ninth inning trailing the Cardinals 3 2 1 and now on to pitch the man who collected to save yesterday right-hander Rene Arocha Rocha looking for save number 6 4 and 3 record for 62 we are a on for the 29th time 22 times out of the bullpen and Zeile very close to the line and very shallow at third wants to make sure he takes away the bud but if Shawn bunts he certainly wants to bunt up the right side but the way he's swinging the bat I gotta believe he's gonna continue to swing the bat batted away he's down a strike Cardinal bullpen has been very good again today they got a third of an inning out of rob murphy and inning in two thirds of perfect pitching by Mike Perez and now they hand it to erosion ozzie grows and it's in time to get the hustling Dunston one down at the bottom of the night and this grass in the infield is very slow because that ball was hit hard by the time it got to Ozzie it had a whole lot taken off it so was he had some time to set get it and he says by his own admission he plays a lot more shallow here in Wrigley Field than he does anywhere in the national league just because of the high infield grass Shawn really motoring down the line he almost deep that out here's grace sold for three at an RBI groundout for the only cub run in the six inning and the way the team has been hitting are actually not hitting at Wrigley Field it's almost apropos but the only run you get is on a groundout and not only that Tommy but if this score holds up all three games the identical score of three to one an oddity indeed one and one to Mark Grace now two balls in a strike waiting on deck Sammy Sosa Cubs need grace to get aboard and Sosa to play some long ball Sammy with 16 home runs this year and there's the front end so a single bike race his first hit of the game and here comes Sammy well our Buick game summary fine outings by both start suck cliff to the Cardinals rack so for the Cubs now let's say Oh gave the Redbirds a two nothing lead in the fourth with a two-run homeland down the right-field line and earlier in the game Rick Sutcliffe on a bunt attempt got hit in the elbow the pitching elbow with a throw from Rick Wilkins and he said that it's still really sore that's one of the reasons why he came out of the game a little early for him so hopefully the big guy will be ok ball one to Sammy he singled in the first singled again in the fourth inning flied to Lankford in center ending the six most likely a Rocha will try to stay away from Sosa here situation where a home run can tie the score so let's see what Sammy does with it chopped it foul over the cup third base side dugout a ball a strike on Sammy 16 homers 42 batted in and really right now he has become the only power threat true power threat in this cub line up you can make an argument all day long the guys are capable of hitting home runs Glenallen Hill an example Derek may an example fact is they're not Sammy can take you out to it won't associate well the ropes is trying to keep the sinker down and he's trying to throw a ground ball here now Ozzie plays up the middle so there is a gap there is no way that Zeile wants to get too far off the line at third so the gap is between Zeile and Ozzie on the left side 2 1 pitch is chopped behind the plate foul so now 2 & 2 Cubs are down 3 to 1 but so to the tying run at the plate as Arocha served up the single to mark race a moment ago both sinkers by Arocha have been down and into Sosa the pitch before McGriff wanted it away and Arocha couldn't get it there Sammy right on top of that plate and the tutu he thought about it he'll back [Applause] billy williams probably wishing he could get up there and take his hacks at a right hand and close it Rocha eyeing the side social waves about the 3-2 pitch and a foul ball wide a third race was not running [Music] it's pretty tough because grace doesn't have much speed and Sammy Sosa has fanned 61 times so if you're running with grace you really run the risk of the strike him out throw him out double play that ends the game you got a little bit of contact man up you got a shot but in this situation it's really a gamble if you run with grace three to delivery and a LaRoche he'll back off the robber grace getting a good leak is Peri his back up behind him down there at first well you got to figure the Cardinals feel that this run doesn't mean much that doesn't mean much of anything the man that does mean a whole lot is Sammy Sosa representing the tying run 3 2 delivery struck him out with a fastball and was bold for and that's why you don't run with a grace when you have a man who has fanned as many times as Sousa he swung at a high fastball out of the zone Sammy should be standing at first instead it's strikeout number 62 and that fastball up and in just overpowered him you see him have to go up and when you do that you just have no chance so now Derrick may owe four threes bounced to 2nd flied to left flied to Witten and right race at first the Cubs are down to their final out live ball shallow center and this is it nearly misjudgment there by Jordan but he was able to make the sliding grab and that'll do it so the Cubs in the night didn't get it hit they leave a man on base and the Cubs have dropped two out of three in this weekend series to Joe Torre's team as Tony mentioned every final score the same and the one thing that continues to mystify the Cubs and not only the players but the coaching staff in the front office is just why this team cannot score in Wrigley Field and yesterday Tommy the wind was blowing out it looked like it'd be a very lively day at both teams combined for a total a total of six hits today the wind blowing in you figure it's going to be once again a low-scoring game it was both teams combined for 12 hits but the Cardinals with a couple more runs in the Cubs all three games as Tommy mentioned at the three to one and the Cardinals take two out of three in this very old and very intense rivalry and stony now all of a sudden if you're Tom treble horn and company the Pirates a team many did not expect to have a good season they have rushed back winning today their sixth straight win and they're back at 500 and certainly the Pirates they'll always come in here and generally have played well in the past even though the names in the faces have changed the success has it well the Pirates had caught Saint Louis coming into this one the Pirates won today as did st. Louis that Cubs will lose a game to both of those teams and things getting a little tough at home you know when you're putting together the type of losing streak and although it's not consecutive games but the type losing season the Cubs are in front of the faithful here at Wrigley Field it just doesn't give you all that much confidence and you have the Pirates coming in they're playing as well as anybody and you got to believe that Pittsburgh is going to be a pretty tough team on the road they've had their problems Tommy they're 13 and 22 on the road coming into this one so something has to give you have a team that has had all kinds of problems winning at home the Cubs now 11 and 20 for the Pirates 13 and 22 on the road they are coming in for three and there are a lot of seats available get night game tomorrow you have two games after that and then it's on to Houston and when we get back from Houston for all of you who are maybe just tuning in or tuning in for the last couple of innings of this game Harry Caray will probably be back after the road trip to Houston to once again take over the seat here on the television side and that will commence with a doubleheader with the Colorado Rockies in town on the fourth of July you know it's Tony what's really a shame is very quickly the fact that the Cubs all of a sudden are beginning to get pretty good consistent starting pitching I mean you look at all three games of this series we know about foster yesterday Trachsel six innings four hits only two runs today and due to that lack of offense so many very fine pitching performances are going by the wayside you hate to see that because you know eventually the pitching staff is gonna fall into some difficulties and if you're not winning getting the pitching that they've gotten then it gets a whole lot tougher if you get a situation here at Wrigley Field with the wind blowing out and you get some offensive days because you know that you're not going to put together two straight weeks of great pitching you're going to have your pitching let downs and the Cubs right now just having an offensive malaise 3 2 1 our final score we'll be back with more right after this [Music] you
