and talk a bit about you and your work I'm a double up your Instagram here great thank you well first of all it's great to leave me and come over here to the west coast it's just nice to get away and I'll give you a little background I am co-owner of a design firm with my sister so we're a family business which is great I am based in Maine like Elmont Gina that my sister is in Minneapolis where a lady owned and operated firm so we have a copywriter Carolyn who's based in Boston we have a studio manager also named Sarah who is based in Maine and we have a very talented developer named Alex so we connect we're all over so we connect using slack most of the time and videoconferencing and we're a small business and we really like it that way because we get to work one-on-one with a client and never really give up being creative so we started using Photoshop a long time ago when I was in high school when Photoshop were was really just coming out my dad introduced me to Photoshop and this was back before YouTube and Google there's like a cricket sounds I am that old and so in the beginning stages I had to go out and take photos of pieces that I liked scan them in and then crop them out and even before that was a very cut and paste style to design I love collage I think it went back to scrapbooking yes love mixed media so I wasn't able to go into Google in the very beginning so it was a long process to get items in there and this was before any courses I'm not formally taught I'm self-taught with Photoshop so my way of operating might be very different from yours oh just uh Adam Osborne hey is someone from Maine they have a great firm at a video firm in back in Bangor and so for me learning and I was excited to come on and hear that they were going to be beginners in this group because I'm also you know I'm always learning new things and an Adobe is always coming out with some fantastic new programs the new I'll show some of the features and CC which I really like but to give a little background and start jumping into this project this is a real project I didn't want to come up with a pretend one this is a spa that's opening up in Austin Texas and the client came to us after viewing our Instagram feed and she saw a style that she liked she really liked that collage and makes me to look to everything so when a client comes to you after seeing your work and it's like please do that again like a dream come kiss and so that's what we're gonna work on today so we started with a Pinterest board and so I'm going to give you a little bit of a background of where we started with the project and then take you through a few things so you can see so we presented this to the client to see if we were on the right track with colors and typography and things like that yeah exactly and the client is developing also an organic skin line product line and she didn't want the colors to be muted or pastel she wanted something vibrant and that's what you're seeing here these jewel tones which I love so much so we started with this show that to the client and from there we started to develop a mood board and that's what you're seeing here so here is the mood board and here is a grid that we pull different element from that and paste that in here to present to the clients you can see those vibrant colors but also some feminine touches the blush color in there from this we developed our color palette which we'll see right here and you built all of this in Photoshop yes so I use Photoshop for everything yeah is it for branding for packaging for web it is my comfort zone yeah where my sister loves illustrator this is where I am happiest and I just stay right here okay so yes I developed this in Photoshop yeah and from this point we then developed some branding and I'll show you this is a concept that we did and this is the first concept and thank you someone just said they liked how the mood board is laid out so thank you so much it's definitely a little bit off-the-cuff it's not very rigid move this over here so this is one of the concepts that we created and we used Photoshop and went in and painted some of these elements in here to make this a very unique type is moving oh thank you so much we really wanted to keep that movement that flow in mind and we'll go down through here beautiful thank you so I'm just giving the audience here a little bit of a background of where we're at right now with a project so here was a sub mark that we created I'm using the are then trying to tie in the letter A and a stationary to go along with it and then this is really what I wanted to get down to right here so this collage piece that you see here when I presented this to the client she really liked this this seemed to resonate with her and so that's what we're actually gonna work on today it's a style that I feel most comfortable in designing and she wanted to see this used on posters in her new spa so today I am going to design two posters the client hasn't even seen them so you guys get to see it first so I'm really open to any tips this is a work in progress so if there's something you see and you think that it could use a splash of color here and there I would love to hear it I'll scroll down you can see how we applied packaging that collage style to the packaging and to a website so that's where we're at with this project so I'm gonna close out of this and let's dive right in so I start with opening up my menu here so Sara says that she would love to hear a little bit about your color selection process and how you picked these colors yep so in looking at the Pinterest board when the client was telling me about what she was looking for she was looking for something that was feminine but also her spas gonna cater to men okay so I didn't want to go with a color palette that was overly feminine I felt that I definitely wanted to include black with the Raven and an accompanying color to that were all these beautiful jewel tones so in really just listening to the client and what she was looking for is how we developed the colors for this so on this first poster I'm going to set the size to have it set to inches so I'm gonna do 10 by 14 you could do posters 11 by 17 and even bigger yeah for the sake of this I'm going to just do that I'll see our resolution to 350 so here we have the beginning of the poster and the first thing I like to do is to get my workspace all set up because once I start cutting and pasting and collaging it can get really chaotic and so what I like to do is to set up color swatches in my library so I'm going to show you how to do that when you're taking something with branding and you're going to carry that branding throughout other pieces it helps to have things like your colors right they're very easy to access so I'm going to show you something that I do I go under swatches and you'll see I have my work station set up over on the side here at home when I have my large monitor yeah I have you know all over the place but for the laptop I need it sort of confined earlier so I've created my own workspace and under swatches here if you click that there's little toggle there and you can go to preset manager so I'm going to erase these swatches really quickly and show you how to get your swatches so I'm going to go back to my color palette here and I'm gonna use my eyedropper tool and I'll start with a black I just I drop that color and I click over here in my swatches panel and name lips melt that wrong as you'll notice throughout I spell things wrong but that's what I'm used to doing so here's green I'm gonna come in here and get my yellow so I'm just selecting my colors right now to get my workstation ready for so you can easily use those colors as them when you're working on this poster that way I don't have to bounce back and forth between my poster and like Oh what was that color but yeah there I'm gonna leave everything here so it speeds up that process a little bit and what's bringing this flu and unless we have this nice teal color and one other color I want to pull in that I don't have here but I'm thinking for the posters I'd like to have something that isn't like a stark white color so I'm going to I drop this marigold color here and open up my I mean I want to create sort of a cream color so I'm going to do that here yeah just create another box here so I can I drop that and pull that in here go back to swatches and let's just call this cream okay so I'm gonna go back to our poster here so in my libraries now here is my color palette it's easy for me to access along with my pictures that I've pulled off of Adobe here so these are a lot of the assets that I'll be using for the project I go into layer and so I think before I'm going to be doing the poster I want to start designing from sort of the front and I work sort of backwards okay and the project is really important for the client to have botanical elements in her project so I think I'm going to start with that I want to have a battalion but element for each poster and build around it so I'm going to open up my file here to get let's see here now I have I see I like this one and the client really likes penis i really love this photo at all i love it is that from just a stock yep yeah it is yes beautiful so there's all kinds of different ways to go about getting rid of a white background and I'll show a couple different ways that work best throughout this I think that what I'm going to show to start is just selecting a color and let's see here we're gonna go to under select I'm gonna go color range and so what I want to try to do is under selection you can even do image I'm gonna I drop this white what I'm trying to do is remove that white background so that we can just have our botanical element so I think that that did a really good job of removing them and zoom in a little bit so you can see it did a great job very clean yep and I hit command D to deselect and then I like to do one more step in getting making sure there's no white edges around these so what I like to do is select my layer here so I just hit command and then I click over here on my layer to select it and then I go under select and modify I like to go down to contract and that's almost going to bring in just a little bit and attract a couple pixels within usually I go with two it'd be cool if I could preview you know how far that's going in but free and I'm just going to say two now I want to make sure I hit inverse if i erase right now I'm going to erase the pretty botanical here so I hid under select inverse so you can't really see you know what's happening but it went in and just removed some of the white that you could see there so I'm going to drag this into my poster this is my starting piece here in the center it's pretty I really love these botanicals and I don't think I'm gonna have the stems on here I feel like it might be distracting so instead of creating a mask I'm just going to come in really quickly and just erase it yeah yep so you know you won't want to bring them back right I definitely I want to bring these back so I come in and then I can adjust yep right using the I think it's the I don't know the name of these two keys here I'm just so used to using them so often and decreasing and increasing the size here yeah okay again this style of mixed-media the pieces don't have to be perfect because it is going to be layer upon layer as you'll see if we were going to be spending some time doing photo editing I would spend a lot more time yes and you're doing that first sure yeah and so we have our botanical element here so I wanted to pull in a graphic of a woman for this and on our other poster have a portrait of a man in there so I'm going to go in let's go into our libraries really quickly Tim says you can also remove a fringe feel if you layer than matting and then defects great so there's another range yeah another option there's so many different ways and I try to show as many in a where I am self-taught I really just kind of went in to the programs yes I have to figure this out yeah so we'll be doing all kinds of different styles so that's a really good tip so will show one here one of my new favorite things in CC right now is a new way to remove backgrounds it has sped up the process so much for me so we have this beautiful woman here and I am going to go in and select my quick selection tool so what I'm going to do is I want to remove this white background so when I went in and click that something popped up here called select subject now this is photoshop's way of selecting and analyzing your picture and selecting just that so it did a really good job you can see there's some fine tuning that might need to be done so let's zoom in a little bit it did a great job of fine really good but I think I'll go in with the quick selection and just maybe fix her lip up just a little bit and again she's going to be receiving so many different filters and layers on this that you know you won't have a lot of these fine details aren't really necessary but for the sake of this I'd love to be able to show you a couple of the steps now hair is always so hard to do my hair is always someone else out there so if I'm ever photoshopping hair there's a really cool refined brush that I'll show here so we have we'll call this good for right now and I'm gonna go up here and hit select and mask right there so there's some different views for select and mask because we want a transparent background I have it set to onion skin but you could see what this looks like with white with all these different colors yeah but I'm just going to keep it with the transparent so what I'm in now is a masking tool to kind of smooth out the lines where it was cut out so if you feather if i zoom in here a little bit you can really see what it's doing so it's just smoothing out that edge a little bit here contrast is adding a little bit of it's making the darker pixels a little bit more pronounced around the edge so for this I think that this looks good again she's going to have a ton of different filters added to her so these little steps we don't have to go into but for output I want to make sure I select layer mask that way I have my mask here that I'm working with and then I want to go in double-click the mask layer and this is where I'm going to use this tool right over here I find the hair mm-hmm yep so I'm going to go in here it does such a good job I don't know if it would work on mine but on her nice straight hair it does a great job I'm just going to hurry up and go through this edge here if you're doing well you you do photography and so I know that you do this a lot more so you're probably watching going oh my worry yeah honestly my business partner does most of the posts yeah I watch her I don't have to do what's a lot but it's a lot of like fine-tuning a lot of like super detailed work yeah but that's what these tools are so nice for you my gosh it's great oh my gosh making our life so much easier yeah let's bring her eyelash back a little bit I didn't see when I just hit that with the refine tool and I think I might lost some of her really nice eyebrows oh that looks aren't that is that's crazy I love it it makes it makes a lot easier for me so I'm just okay and this looks great to me so what I'm going to do is I'm going to right click and I'm gonna apply the last the mask to this and next I'm going to go through and start adding a series of filters and adjustments and you're going to see this done to a lot of different graphics throughout these posters so if you don't catch it on this one I'm gonna do this like 20 more times okay so it's the same thing I'm going to go up under adjustments here and I'm I first set it to black and white and then I like to go under because I want these images to appear somewhat vintage and aged I give them a little bit of a similar treatment and starting it here when I really boost the contrast and then I like to go into curves it would not always select sort of a similar pinpoints here I'm trying to create a little bit of a matte look so I want to bring that up just a little bit I think she looks really beautiful so I'm gonna duplicate this layer so I hold option and drag down so it gave me another layer that way for this layer I'm going to apply a half tone so to do that I'm going in here and selecting black so for my halftone I want it to be black and white that's why I selected black and white over here if you pick green and yellow you can do some really funky filters with halftone but I want to keep this black and white for now I'm going to go under here too filter gallery and when I first started out in Photoshop I think I spent like months just in this area because it's so much fun there's so many different options it's so crazy I love it yeah okay and so we love here yeah you can zoom in so I want to keep in mind that this is going to be a poster and so we are gonna be seeing this at quite a distance and when I add her to the poster she's shrinking up quite a bit right so I want to keep this almost over exaggerated in a way that's not too redundant but I want to keep this you know I want to make sure that we are able to see this yep yeah cuz if you make the dots too small right they'll just fade away and you see it yeah we don't want it to be too obvious because I'm not going to that Paul means are the punctures yeah but I want to have that so I like how this looks however another one of the really cool things in this latest CC's now I can drag through I don't know if you can see what's happening to our picture I can go through this preview them all yes before you used to have to click to apply and then see what happens yeah and this just makes it great cuz I'm looking at her like well they all look pretty awesome I think I'm gonna go I love how that looks right there makes your eye like so Moody yeah I wish I could do my makeup and so I'm gonna change the opacity just a little bit because though I love that I want to make sure that some of that background image comes through there all right so I'm going to merge these two layers and I'm going to drag her on into our poster she's gonna be huge to start but that's fine we're gonna play around with this name a few my layers I never named my layers say I will while I'm on camera okay but as I get into this I'll probably go back I feel like that's a bad habit that most people I think you get into a flow you know you don't think about it until later you're trying to look for something and then like oh man I wish or right in the early stages of using Photoshop I used to use this for a web mock-up yes so when I would send my Photoshop file off to a developer I'd always have to say I'm so sorry because you know there's nothing there you know nothing else labels on them okay so I'm just gonna shrink this down I'm gonna tip her up a little bit and I noticed a question coming through on the chat about allowing you to do smart object MS and I definitely do that and that is so helpful when you don't want to if you want to have a backup and almost a saved version if you're gonna get into editing where I've done this a lot and I have a good idea of these are the what I want to apply to this morning there I didn't have to play it as safe but when I'm first testing things out using a mask to test out sort of your contrast and all of your adjustments is so helpful because then you can see how that goes and it applies they go back and adjusts and those things right oh there's too much contrast a ton should be bigger things like that yeah yep definitely I think someone just asked is this a stock illustration for the botanicals yes it is a stock illustration and a lot of these I pulled off Adobe stock to get a lot of the graphics on there these are an old sock that I had for a while back and it actually was so nice to be able to use them in this project so moving forward and we have our woman here and I might go back and adjust and rearrange things and what I want to do is to create some shapes some geometric shapes so that we can we can start bringing in some color so for this I think I'm going to pull this really nice blue color and there's some really in Photoshop if you go under your shapes you can create shapes right in there but for this I'm actually going to create some custom shapes that I want to use so for her I want to create using the lasso tool and I'll go back to my layers here Ivan says I see a bird with a human head it kind of does look like the shape of a bird almost if that was really intentional that's a great observation there will be a bird actually in here in a second so for my shape I'm just sort of sitting back and looking you know where I think this is going to need some color and I'm gonna lasso out a sort of an abstract shape there and using the old paint bucket which was one of the tools that I used so much in the beginning yeah one of the original yes went in and command D to deselect so I like how that added that nice blue I think I'm gonna add in beautiful I really like that color a lot alright asking about the resolution and use it up to three if I did yeah yeah yeah I did I set it to 350 if this was going to be a bigger print for the client then I probably would have set that a little bit higher but for this I just set it to 350 for now yeah and we can always shrink that down as we're going forward and I think I'm going to pull in some of the emerald green color so what I'm trying to do is to pull in a lot of the colors at the client lakes and holding a shift and dragging I'm able to change my circle size so you can see where it didn't make it green so I'm going to go into my library so I had so nice have all those colors right yep a new command actually let's go back I'm gonna step back one here I did you that again and then you can even double click here and I'll double click my stepping back all right there you go so I'm gonna tuck that back in there and again I'm gonna probably rearrange things here yeah but just getting them all in there all the elements you're going to use exactly and play around yeah so speaking of the bird head we're gonna bring in the bird guys this is radiant Raven so I found half a bird of course I definitely do so we have about 30 seconds until chattin wins so get ready to jump in the chat you can win some stickers from sticker meal all right so I found this guy and I think he's super cute yeah I really like Ravens quite a bit I have a two year old and for her first Halloween I made her a raven lost years so it was nice and the client reached out to me and said that she wanted to have this I'm like wow I got all about ready know all about them so first thing I'm going to do is to unlock this layer and I'm going to duplicate this layer which I could have also done by holding down option and dragging I want to keep a backup just in case I mess up removing the background here it doesn't have to be very fine-tuned we're gonna apply the black and white okay to that so I am going to do the same thing that I did before and to let a Photoshop do it's smart select here all right time for chattin win so jump in the chat and say hi and we'll be right back and be talking more about this Raven perfect [Music] okay we are back we are just waiting to see who's gonna win our stickers from sticker mule and that's hot it's going crazy everyone riding in yeah hello thing hi everyone thank you guys for watching thanks for asking questions keep them coming we would love to hear what he says I'm liking the poster thank you he know it's hard to read when it's going so bad I think my biggest fear was that no one would be there yeah awesome Austria Wow and Mathias congratulations you will get a message on B hands about how you can redeem your stickers and then if you didn't win we will have a link for you guys you can go to sue Camille calm / Adobe live 19 and you can get 10 stickers for a dollar I believe so make sure that you go check them out they're so awesome if you want to create some fun stickers you can get them they're great I think I need some for mine I know my laptops boring all right so we're jumping back in we want to add the Raven this iconic sort of piece to the branding so I've come in I've let Photoshop do a lot of the heavy lifting for say and select this here and so I'm going to come up and do a select mask so the edges are a little rough here and I want to come in I'm definitely going to use the refine tool for this guy but I always sort of start out by feathering and smoothing as much as I can it's making very fine adjustments you might not be able to see but I can really crank up the feathering here so you'll be able to see what's happening might take a minute so that's what I don't want it want to be very subtle so it's real yep Landon's I was so great to see you on here Andrea oh thank you so much representing Bangor Maine oh it was like a population of like ten thousand people really all right so I'm gonna go output and I want to make sure that looks good I'm gonna be using the refine actually I'm gonna bring that back just a little bit he again is that I refer to him as he raven is going to have the black and white it's going to have filters and noise added so this is not as if it has to be precise precise as it might for other projects correct and in a way this almost is fitting for our style because it is sort of cutting and pasting so it's a lot of fun to be like old-school collage man you yeah things out and i just would never be perfect cuz you're doing it yeah yeah yep so that is a win-win for me because i get to do that for this here so i've come back into my layer of my mask by double-clicking and this is where i'm gonna work a little bit on fixing up the feathers it is kind of noticeable and it's like magic it really does such a good job of fine-tuning that and i could spend a little bit more time in here but for the sake of our poster i'm just gonna kind of cruise through and again this poster that we're presenting to the client if she did select this one is one that she really did like i would probably go back and do this again her her an adjustment yeah i think so or even just go back and do it one more time maybe i would do it a higher resolution just in case sometimes clients hire us to do murals and so we do really high resolution graphics you know full wall treatments with design so you would start out with kind of it's almost like a mock-up but a more finished monica and then if she likes this design or maybe she has suggestions for changing it that's like would I want to really make it a finished product because it needs to be changed exactly yes so what we're gonna do with these posters is we're going to apply them to a mock-up and when I present something to the client I want to make sure it's presented in a way that she can see oh I see that this could be a poster with a gold frame yes opposed to just sending her a digital design you know that wouldn't look so I'm just going to apply this apply the layer mask and because I have the woman facing one way I want the Raven to face the other way so I'm going to go under image image rotation and flip horizontal so useful yet and so we have him here he's going or the Raven is going to have the same exact treatment as the woman did so I want to duplicate actually my step-back command see I used that a lot yes I delete a lot of things so you saw uh-huh so I'll come in and one thing that you could do is come in and create a mask and then do your adjustments that way you can step back if you add or do a little bit too much but for this and this project I've done this I want this style to be consistent rage I'm going to come in and do black and white same exact things we were doing before I think I'll bring the brightness up just a hair so he doesn't get completely washed out there and I'm gonna do curves again because I'm trying to give it a matte sort of finish I think that works really well makes it ice pops yeah much yeah definitely and so let's create another layer here and what I would like to do with this one is the same thing I want to apply a little bit of a half tone to him so I went over again and did black and white you could do color but for this I just want to make sure it's black and white I'm gonna go under filter gallery and you could apply the same setting that you did before just by reapplying but I wanted to see I wanted to make sure I do it for each separate sure I'd make those adjustments yeah that particular image you actually looks good I think I might increase the size just a little bit because again this is on a poster it's going to be you know looking at it from a distance I don't want to lose all of that so I'll hit okay and let's see what a couple of these settings it almost needs to I want it to be lighter but maybe not like that similar I was asking about different places that you might be able to learn more about Photoshop and Adobe tools in general and you were talking earlier about how you're completely self-taught but before there were tutorials and things like that so I mean there's so much out there now but even just getting in and playing and testing out the tools for yourself it's don't the best ways to learn that is how I learn and it was really messy and is still really miss yeah I'm always going back command-z I mean I am always in there making mistakes but those mistakes I step back like oh okay yeah I actually can do this yeah and I like to go on - I mean Adobe Live is great in learning tips and YouTube when I can a lot of times if I'm doing something I'll sit back and think there's got to be an easier way yeah and there usually is yeah and I'll find that you know tutorial on that so what I'm going to do really quickly with these two layers is I want to merge these two because I'm going to add one more item to this I'm gonna go under noise and add noise I like doing that cuz it even gives it a little bit more of an aged look sure yeah kind of grainy yep yeah definitely granny I think it looks great I set this to monochromatic because if I didn't if we zoom in look at our preview here it would be in color you can see all the little the colors so I want to make sure it is monochromatic and I like having it not uniform so it's a little bit scattered out dellux good right there so I want to bring the Raven into our poster drag him right in here so he's huge so I did command T to get my transform tool another new feature of CC which is really nice as before I used to have to hold shift right and then make it smaller in the corner so it was uniform but now you don't have to do that it's just there's that yeah yep so he is gonna be above that sighs I'm tucking this one in back over here actually he might look kind of cool if he was peering out from there that long yeah there's going to be other elements added to this so I'm not worried about the fact that it's cut off right here yeah you'll hide that yep so I think that looks good here and just in thinking and so adding some more color I'm gonna add some paint sort of splats I'll shoot and I will show you one thing that I like to do let's create a new layer so in my paint brushes I have it set to my favorite paint brushes and you can create I had all kinds that were in here and I'd have to scroll through and through until I found the right paint brush that I wanted to use until I learned about the preset managers so when you're in brushes and you click the gear icon you can go right here to preset manager so this is all your brushes and you can take and you can rearrange them by groups so this makes it really if I want to create a new group I have some paint brushes that look like tape so tape brushes alright so here's a new group in our brushes and here are some of my tape brushes so I click there and I hold down shift so I can select all of these and then you just drag and drop them so you can always find them easily that's so great it's so nice so you can break it up and I have different packs for say social media for winter or for fall there's different brushes that you can use so for this one though let's um I'll just say done and we'll keep that there I'm going to add some splats of color and I want that teal color to be brought in so I'm going to go back to our swatches that we set up in the beginning and select the teal and I'm going to add this up here I might add it a few times I'm going to rotate this because I don't love this section right here I feel like it's kind of distracting so I'm gonna rotate that to hide that piece and then I'm going to add another layer and I'm gonna pick a different type of brush get a difference splat yeah I think so and I apologize for having to lean forward this is like what being almost 40 is like alright I think I'll try this one here and I want to bring this over here to this corner I'm gonna make this a little a little bit bigger and I might rotate that to see cuz right now I don't know if I love that hard edge I had to be I say I like that quite a bit there so I'll pull that back okay so we're adding sort of layer upon layer upon layer and so what I want to do for these it's starting to get messy cause I'm going to go in pause for a moment yeah yeah so if I start getting like there's documents that I opened one time and there was like 400 unnamed layers I'm like that has got to be some sort of record a lot of times I'll group them so if I have botanicals if this is a bigger piece I'd group them in just my botanicals or just the paint right just to make it a little bit easier when moving forward and so I'd like to bring in some wings for this because of the brave wing it is something that the client actually requested having so let's see here I'm going to go in and open up on Adobe I found these wings here Oh beautiful which work really well they are beautiful and they're already in black and white which is great so I think the only thing I want to do with this is to remove the background and add some of that noise I want to actually make this a little bit Messier it's so nice and perfect very perfect yeah yep so I'm just gonna use the magic wand tool for this because I think this will do a great job and removing and it did you can adjust your tolerance up above here so if I adjusted it to say 100 it probably is going to select a bit of my wings which I don't want so I'm going to set that back down and you can just sort of play around with it to see what works usually around 22 50s where I usually stay and so I'm going to select inverse oops online so here we go so we remove the background there again I want to add a little bit of noise to this because they are very this just gives it sort of an aged look that I know that the client has requested for this style Anna's asking if you use all stock images and graphics or do you create your own both yeah I do use a lot of stock imagery though because it is back to sort of my roots and in how a design and cutting and pasting we should take magazines or pictures and so it's almost taking that stock imagery cutting out letters and piecing together something but we do create some graphics that are our own but I use a lot of Adobe stock in putting these together like this I can't go out and do that I mean that that is not what I'm good at oh it's a lot of extra work in time when the image already exists yeah that you can license and using right um that's gonna save you so much time yep and I know it to be honest I'll leave this style of photography and photo editing to to the pros and to people who are really good at this and getting you know stock photography that is so perfect for us to use that is just something that I'll take advantage of other you know other talent out there so I want to select just one wing I don't want to bring in both of these I want to bring in one so I'm just going to use the trusty old lasso tool and quickly select command-c to copy and then command V to paste so it's quite large as is everything that we paste in here it will require some adjusting I'm going to bring that down I want this one over on this side and I think I want to make that a little bit smaller so it's not too distracting yeah just a little yep into the wing mm-hmm and let me name this because I actually want to duplicate this and what I'd like to do is duplicate it and bring a wing over to the other side so I am going to alt and drag so that created a copy and I want to flip this really quickly so all I'm going to do is command + T and hold shift by doing so it allows me to very quickly flip it around have it right there zoom in I don't want the viewer to sort of see a mirror image so I'm gonna play around with this wing a little bit and I'm going to use something that I don't use too often that I decided to save for this okay so hopefully it works yeah no pressure or anything so I'm gonna go in and let's see here convert to smart object I want to try to use the puppet warp because I want to with puppet warp it's like a puppet you can set pins where you want joints to move right so what I did when I hit puppet tool it created this mesh that went over you can turn on and off this mesh right up here zoom in a little bit here so you see it almost like the joint of the wing or what I would imagine is the joint so that the wing can move out I'm going to add a pin here and a pin here that locks that joint right there and then I'm going to add a pin up here and watch what you can do you can drag it thank you waving yeah it's incredible actually how well it works I just want to straighten it out a little bit um he rounds it out a little bit I'm gonna bring this bottom base up to was the same but slightly different yeah exactly and so by converting that to a smart layer I can turn off and on so you can really see you know the difference between the two yeah so I will drag this up it's just a slight change and probably nothing that you know the client would end up noticing it was just it's really something that I would drive me nuts if I saw it and it's gonna get so hidden here then yeah you might not notice it anyway so all right so I'm just going to but it's a subtle change that can make a difference yeah I think so and I may not end up using this in here J so it might just be something as I sit back I'm like okay this is just not working with this this is a work in progress right now we're actually working on this project so yeah you're kind of with me as we look at this all right um I think that I'm looking at this and at this spa she's going to be doing manicures and pedicures so I got thinking it'd be kind of cool to throw in an arm and throw in some legs so yeah so the first thing I'm going to do is go in here and we're gonna do the same exact you know I mentioned the beginning you're gonna see sort of the same repetition remove the background add black and white we're gonna do the same thing for this I want this to come out on the side of the woman so I'm going to flip this because I want this to come [Music] sorry I just forgot where I was looking here it's on our image rotation to flip it okay blend our layers over here I'm going to unlock that layer and I will use the same tool and subject a select a subject I have a feeling this is going to work very well yep and it did we can zoom in the background so nice like that like very great images you can see a little bit here where we can come in and we're gonna bump that in a little bit there a little bit right here these little details will is mostly just for me right now a little twinge of OCD if I leave it it will drive me nuts so okay we have about 38 minutes until a portfolio review okay so if you guys want to submit make sure that you do so you can submit above the chat there is a tab for portfolio review so you can go ahead and submit there and Andreo will take a look at a few of those I cannot wait yeah it's gonna be so fun and then if you're just joining us Andrea is from Studio linear and she is working on a project for a real life client and a spa and Austin you yeah so designing some posters that go along with their branding mhm that are gonna hang in their spa which is really cool yeah it's great I'm hoping that the um I can fly out yeah check it out so all I'm doing here is applying sort of the same treatment as before I'm going to duplicate and I want to add the halftone to this as well I'm sure I could there's probably an easier way to keep on doing this by creating an action or something but what I want to do is because all of them are so very different I want to make sure I've control over how exactly like this yes this is not this is what was preset for our Raven and that's a bit overkill yeah so I'm gonna bring that contrast down keep on going the size is it looks okay I think that's good right there okay and again scrolling through here it's so nice to be able to just preview it almost looks like Frankenstein's yeah I in you know it's going to look odd in placement on here and but the client liked those sort of oddities that we had and staff our collage work so I'm just gonna go with it when you're making a collage like this you kind of sketch it out an advance and have an idea or do you like yeah I can grab this hair I don't know oh yeah it's okay yeah so I have my notebook here and a lot starts with so you probably can't see that but it's sketched out I have like I'm gonna put a leg here and arm here yeah yep sometimes it just goes sort of you know with the flow yeah sure but a lot of times and I'll just sketch it out like this let me see mm-hmm oh wait oh there yeah but then it's completely on it's right there we go okay you can see yes you can see my hideous drawing oh it's just it's a rough draft yet perfect it is yes yeah definitely someone just had a great question and asked is it possible to have the dots in color and I'm wondering if they mean by the halftone yes if you're asking about the halftone you can have that in color you come over here and well let's just it only take me a second to show this so let's just see let's just add two memos swap and let's just add two crazy colors and go to a garden color yeah exactly so yeah you can add different colors yeah it looks very cool it might be a bit much for the client but it's cool so you can add any two colors and it adds some very cool effects to it so I'm going to go back and set this too black to my I'm sure there's an easier way button okay let's go here and I think that we have to bring that down just a little bit and so we were playing with some of these settings over here I'm just gonna go multiply like how dark it looks yeah and you can come in and adjust so right now it looks a little dark I'm gonna come in on my first layer not the one with the halftone and I'm going to adjust the exposure just a little bit and just brighten that up there we go just so it doesn't look too dark I'm going to merge these two layers and when I drag this into my poster it's gonna be quite large but you can shrink this down it actually looks kind of cool I'm not gonna leave it that big almost like they're wearing a bracelet right or something oh yeah the prom yeah I do like how that looks and maybe I'll do one that has a poster with some larger elements like that work really well this is not going to be in scale I don't believe with a woman's head which is fine because the wings aren't in scale and that's just the style that this is I'm gonna leave that right there for now and I feel like if it was to in scale it could look weird like that is supposed to be your hand or something yeah anyways yeah I feel like it's almost better if it's not exactly yep yeah yep and so next I'm probably going to add I was thinking about adding some legs to this this might not work and if it doesn't I'll just erase it so see that's the beauty is like you can put things in and you start with your sketch in your idea and I'm sure it changes so much as you're actually building it it does and when you get working on it a lot of times when I take time to sit back there is a obviously that notion of you know less is more um in some though in these Styles it is a very layered process but when you step back and it's like okay I really like something but it's just not work yeah you can just delete it yeah someone asked what size canvas I use for the poster which is a great question for this poster I just sent the dimensions in inches 10 by 14 and the DPI to 350 if I was going to be doing a larger poster I definitely would make it set those parameters and probably boost up the resolution a little bit but for this project yeah I know she's gonna be printing some smaller pieces so that's what we set this to so I have some legs here do wish that my legs look like this and so like so I had this idea of bringing in some more blue into this picture and I didn't really want to just add in another color spot or in their shape so this was an idea that I had and I and again I don't know if it's going to well but I just not Z so we're gonna erase this background here and again we could probably actually use the trusty old magic wand tool zoom in though because I think we need to fix right up here so yep so I'll go into my quick selection and just fine-tune the edges there I'm going to be adding these legs to something so all right now I'm gonna go select inverse oops keep on doing that okay so we have the legs here and I'll probably I've pictured them going on sort of the bottom by the Raven up on the legs kicking out over there so that is more be like sheep like that and I wanted to bring in something a little bit different here a night sky may be really pretty yes and then you get that blue mmm I was trying to think last time Mike how can there be more blue in this without using the same old thing and as I was not able to sleep I got the nice guy and so benefit of a time change huh oh yeah definitely and a lot of ideas that I do have happened in the middle of the night and that's why I have a notebook sometimes next to me in two you can just jot those down yeah before I do that I'm actually going to rotate this I think because I want to try to get as much of this as I can so I'm going to rotate 90 degrees yeah go back and open up the legs drag those in here so let's make these a bit smaller and so I'm just trying to think about where this is going to sit under the Raven I want a little hint of the dark blue okay and the top of her leg to almost be highlighted with the stars there right so I'm gonna drag it kind of like that and then I want to experiment with some of these if not not that I'm just looking to pull out actually that's pretty cool something like that is very cool yeah that's really fun hmm so what I'm going to do is command and click on my layer and I'm gonna come up here and hit image edit copy merged I hit copy merged because it will copy both of those so copy the shape into my background and then I'll come into my poster and hit command V to paste there's some legs coming in so we're gonna shrink this up a little bit here and it brought in that blue color which I was looking for also ties in the fact that she'll be doing pedicures and faces yes yep so we'll add those in here alright and so I kind of want to step back now and see you know what are we going to be adding in one color from her colour palette that seems to be missing is like that pink color as well there could be maybe more black and white yeah and then we're gonna apply text over this as well and I'll show some gold text and gold items in here but I think to start I'm going to add in some of that blush color and in our mood board we can go way back see here there was this nice sort of marbling whatever the texture and I wanted to bring that in to this poster and that will be a way to bring in that nice peach color jima says her legs were out of this world oh I know that was great it was really really good okay so here's my peachy I really love it I just want this to be sort of my counter toaster so I'm going to use something that I don't use very often the first thing I'm going to do is do rotate that and I want to create a very sort of almost a blob and create a shape and so I'm going to go in to the custom shape tool which is up here so you've got all these sort of preset shapes that come with there I'm going to unlock that and add a new there and create a shape like that now this is not what I'm going to probably pull in what I'd like to do is use this little tool up here I don't know the name of it which I feel bad that I don't know the name of that little tool because I use it I feel like there's so many tools that I use and I just and I don't because you just pick and you know what it looks like so wouldn't what it does really as opposed to just doing command and T for transformation and making it long it allows me to I you have to have it under that has to be selected and then you click on it and you can collect the click on these certain points and stretch mmm-hmm a little bit different than the puppet war yes warp tool thank you Tim thanks you can add more shapes via the gear icon yeah have you one dad one yeah as I'm sure you've seen that I have very limited shapes on there yes that's such a good thing you can add in there so thank you Tim like maybe I couldn't remember but I know that I'm only gonna be selecting the bottom part so I'm not gonna worry about this top part I just want to make the shape nuts so I don't know it was a little bit too rigid around that it is so organic yep and so all I'm going to do is click command to select the layer hide the layer and then come under here and hit copy merged and I'm gonna paste that so that just copied the shape and it took the background so when I hit to go to paste let's move it so we can at least see it oh there's a little spot right there oh I'm going to rearrange it and make it a little bit larger so it just brings in a part of that original mood board that the client really likes I call adding a different texture and you yep um steve is asking if these live broadcasts become available later and yes so you can watch every Adobe live after the fact if you're only able to catch a little bit of it you can watch all of the replays which is super awesome all right I want to add in a little bit more pink and I'm going to create a couple custom shapes again using the lasso tool okay I'd like to go under my libraries here and pick our nice blush color I love that color I do too it works really well with black yes and the road room's plum color that we're using and I says that shape that you just made looks almost like a flower petal yeah yeah yeah definitely and so I'm gonna create a new layer I want to create something that visually is taking you from one point taking your ID to another guiding you through yeah yeah and so I just want to create a custom shape so I'm gonna use my lasso tool bring something down here and then up so I've got this outline here I'll go to my paint bucket and fill and I'm gonna drag and move this behind as well so let's bring this back I want this definitely behind everything yes and I think I'm gonna do that one more time create another layer and zoom in just a little bit here I want to get this kind of close here Serena says I'm really loving all these colors Thanks yeah I feel very fortunate to have such amazing clients that let us you know use these colors and you trust our vision yes it's so Moorish it's wonderful alright so see how that's working I think that is coming along it's one thing I want to add in obviously I want to add in some gold she's going to have a lot of black and gold but I want to add in something around the woman a little bit and add in I thought about adding in some also some black and white botanical elements on this as well so going into our this is a stock image I wish I was talented enough to paint this right this is beautiful yeah and for this I'm also going to I think for I will use a different method of picking out the white I'm gonna go to color range and you can adjust the fuzziness here I'm gonna bring it down so I'm not really seeing anything in my floral arrangement that's leaded so I can just click outside of it I'm clicking the white okay and it just selects that white so I can hit to delete that and a lot of times I'll come in and do though fast yeah it's great and so we're going to deselect really quickly and I like to bring in again go under modify and contract and all its doing is contracting and bringing the pixels just a little bit so that if I missed some of the white edging it won't be noticeable this is really just a step that I'm so used to doing that I would just do it anyway inverse I selected inverse because I wanted to erase what's on the other side that selection optimal action right yeah okay and so let us zoom back out here I want to make these black and white but again I don't love these stems they're kind of distracting so I'll just come in really quickly yeah get those right out of there about 20 minutes since home portfolio reviews um so if you haven't had a chance to submit make sure you do so and Andrea will take a look and be able to give some feedback which will be super great so make sure you submit yeah you can submit right above the chat yep all right my stomach's Garlin alright let's go under here I want to boost the contrast of this a little bit because I'm trying to give it that sort of that aged look here and also I'm going to add a little bit of noise this is water colored already and looks very cool but to match what we're going with even I will add more texture yeah yeah I really like that look so I think I could just do one with just black and white and a few hints of color and it would look amazing so we're gonna pull that in I want to drag my layer up above that shape okay and keep it read about there I think that works right there yeah the client liked the combination of black and white so I want to try to add that in cuz I never know I want to gauge what she's going to like and raise well yeah so now I want to add in a little bit of gold to finish up this poster and then we'll apply it to the mock-up so that you can see I want to first one thing that I like to do is go into let's go into our type kit I want to pick a really nice serif font that I think will look good on this poster and coming into our stock fonts here it's really nice to be able to select by category yes it makes it so much easier and it's really nice to be able to type in the word that you're planning on using and to see exactly what its gonna look like yeah me too so I'm gonna select some serif fonts here this is beautiful I might end up using that I'm going to be adding a gold overlay okay to this to add it in so I want to make sure it has enough you know boldness to it that will work yeah if it's too thin you're not gonna be able to see the textures yeah chuckles I got like this I'm gonna go with that the great thing about also about Adobe the type kit is that you just click right here to activate and then within a few seconds we'll get the notification that those fonts have been added to my library which is a lot faster than downloading a font waiting and having to install so that should be added to my library of fonts now sure if it is so what I'm going to do is because we're using gold I want to go and I have a gold that I picked out already let's see if I have it saved here it is I picked this gold out because I felt like it was really close to our color the Marigold color yeah it's a little much so I'm going to go into images adjustments and saturation and I'm going to bring the saturation down just a little bit so it's not a bit my Mutai yep and now I'm going to type in there's a couple different tag lines that the client wanted to use so when you click and using your type tool so it's conscious Beauty where she's going to be launching this line can you make that a little bit larger because we are going to be copying the gold behind it and capturing that so let's go under our fonts so that I can find the font that we installed that fonts gorgeous actually yep and you can select fonts you can group them it's so nice you can click here to just view your Typekit fonts or you can go by class it makes it a bit easier I actually didn't know these existed until a few months ago I was like oh that makes scrolling through like five hundred phones all right let's see here so I'm just actually gonna go with that first one I had picked out that was one that I had downloaded and just for the sake of this I'm gonna use that I'm gonna go back to my layers and what I'm going to do is to hit command I'm going to click on the font to select it and then I'm gonna hide it go under edit copy merged and I'm going to be pasting that into my poster I can delete this layer I accidentally made and I'll probably be pasting this in the front here so let's paste our font it's gonna need to be made quite a bit smaller and I think for this I'd like to have some of the floral elements almost overlap or tell us a little bit maybe this nice peony right here but before I do that let's bring in the other part of our text so I need to bring that in and make that a little bit larger she asked us to help develop a tagline and sometimes clients asked us to help you know develop their identity in their in their business name so a lot of thought goes into right at so we hit copy merge and let's paste that right in there I want to name these really quickly so that I can easily find them and I want to match up the goal sort of highlight that we're seeing right here yeah lost just a little bit these are supposed to be quite subtle if I was doing a poster for a band or a movie I definitely would not be overlaying it yes they make yep all right so using this text here and I was asking if copy marriage does the same thing as a clipping mask I don't know I don't know the answer to that yeah I want to say it's a little different yeah but if somebody knows that'd be great yeah because then I can learn from you yeah I feel like it's different because the clipping mask you're clipping it below to hide it and copy emerge you're taking those two things and bringing them all right yep for this for the text I'm gonna create a mask because sometimes when I'm removing some of the text I make a mistake and this is the easiest way for me to gently erase so if you haven't used a mask and you click down here in the mask and by painting in either black to remove that layer or white to bring it back so I'm usually bringing things back because I will accidentally erase a little too much but I'm gonna pick a brush that is pretty small now I want to be nice and soft so I can come in here and so I can show you what I'm doing my plan is to erase part of the text to have some of the graphic come above it so yeah I'm gonna change the opacity and as you color with black it removes it well let's see if I slip now oh my word I've been just over accidentally erased I'll switch to white and bring it back in yes which comes in handy fine-tuning the text is really nice and Diana so I'm going to just erase a little bit of that and I don't want to raise too much because I also want the viewer to kind of still understand what the word is that we usually yeah so we're just going to erase a little bit right there and then for the client I wanted to add in also a year 2019 when she's going to be launching it before that I just remembered I wanted to add like a silhouette of birds let's see if I can find this here yeah so with a clipping mask you'd be able to edit the text later yep and so it's not instructive but if you know like this is gonna be what it is it's not gonna change you know that's their tagline yeah yeah but if it was something where you're playing around don't know what the tagline is going to be you would want to use it yeah be masking not a copyright yeah that is a really good tip yeah all right so I have a I'm gonna close out a few of these just so we're not using anymore so my workspace I just have to I end up having so many different layers open so I'm just going to remove a few of those so we're gonna bring these birds in let's go to our poster here that's looking incredible oh thank you that's so sweet I want to I thought about having her almost day dreaming about the birds around and adding something up there so I'll put those in and lastly I mentioned I wanted to put in the date something nice for her to sort of remember when this launched but I'm picturing the date kind of coming up sort of vertical okay and so I'm gonna for my selection for font or for text I'm gonna click select the vertical type tool and I'm going to type 2019 I'm gonna make that quite a bit bigger and I want to go with a font that's a little bit different than this and adjust it so I'm going to adjust the spacing of the letters first or a little bit closer together and I want to select something that will have a nice sort of edge to it so it's nice to go to scroll through and see all your phone and see exactly what its gonna look like Valentina says that you should teach courses oh my word that's very very sweet thank you so much you are a natural oh thanks very helpful thank you so for this I think oh I really like this so I'm bald yeah and it's different um I know you know Brandin there are set parameters with fonts that we use yes but I want to bring in something a little bit different so I can sort of change it up but one thing I'm going to do is I want to actually just get the outline yes I don't want to take just the gold so the first thing I'm going to do is remove the fill so it looks like as though it has disappeared but I'm going to go in and select stroke and I have brought in a stroke here so you can see all the different widths I really want this to be kind of thin okay I like how that looks right there so I'm going to hit sorry command and I want to apply this here sorry so my brain stopped working for a second hey okay so I'm going to select that hide it and then copy our beautiful new font here so it's very subtle and I sort of pictured this off to this side well actually we could go in here where her hand is almost playing with this we could go in and let's see if we could do something cool with this I'll add a little bit of a mass to that and then with our brush zoom in even more because of my old eyes it's see here and I'm going to erase a little bit so what your finger is kind of coming through yeah yeah almost like they're intertwined with our text here I love that yeah it looks very it's subtle and it's probably something that only you know will notice because you got to watch and see it be done but that's all in the details exactly yep all right so I'm going to apply this to the mock-up right now because I want to be able to show what this is what I would show a client so the first thing I'm going to do is just to group all of my layers together that way I have something that's easy to drag and drop into a mock-up and I have a poster mock-up and I'm going to go under so I have another poster that I'm going to be doing if we don't have enough time today that second poster is much faster so I'm hoping that I want to be able to show both of the different posters together because there's some different styles for the second one that I really like to show so I'm going to hide the second poster we're not going to worry about that right now and I want to apply that poster to this mock-up that I have here as as a just a stock mock-up yeah yes it is which works nice when presenting things to a client yeah they can envision it in the actual space and what it will actually look like when it's finished actually yeah so I'm going to because I grouped everything into a folder I'm going to drag it over here it's going to paste it into our mock-up and I might change the background a little bit it's a lot of files that's transferring over it takes a sec yep okay I think that I'd like to make the background so you can see that this mock-up has some texture to it which makes it look a little bit more realistic you know how we created in the beginning that cream color yes I think that that would look nice as a background image so I'm gonna come in here and just create a background layer here there we go yeah it just helped to make it look together more it's a little more yeah more aged yep so I'm going to hit command and save or a command asked to save it and then we get to see what this is going to look like in our mock-up and I got thinking I'd like to see what it would look like with a gold frame around it because I think that she will end up having a gold frame okay so right now you can see it applied it to this mock-up we can see right here it has nice texture to it really quickly let's go in and I am going to find let's see if I can find one here's one so it's not the right orientation so the first thing I'm going to do is to flip it zoom out a little bit using the magic wand tool I'm gonna get rid of the white really quickly that gold is a little too too gold yeah so I'm gonna bring that yeah the saturation fit so it's a little bit more muted maybe make it a hair darker and so I'm doing right now is adding a frame to my mock-up okay because when I present this to her I want her to be able to see this is really what it would look like yeah I want to be careful to not cut off too much of our print here so I'll slide this over I think that that will work right there I know that some of the S is kind of cut off a hair and intentionally 2019 I did want to be one of that to be cut off yeah I think to make this look a little bit more realistic I should add maybe some sort of shadow so I'm gonna copy this layer drag it down below my other layer and I'm going to go in and do a quick color overlay and I want to make this color overlay something I like to I drop the background color and then go a hair darker to create something that is a realistic color shadow so you can't really see what I'm doing but here it is here's that color oval overlay yeah and the shadow is a bit too stark right now so I'm going to go under filter blur and my trusty I'm going to try to pronounce it there we go so I think that that works well however there wouldn't be a green right you know shadow so I'm going to erase that I can make that a little bit bigger so we can quickly get rid of that and then I mean I think that posters would normally have somewhat of a shadow on the inside so I'll quickly go in and I'd like to set this one a color overlay so let me drag that behind our actual frame so the color overlay for this I think would be more of a natural color not green it would be a darker shade of this almost cream color and where this shadow is going to be placed is inside our poster as if the light is pointing so the it wouldn't actually cast somewhat of a shadow and because the frame didn't come as a mock-up I wanted to quickly show something like that in here yeah so we'll drag that down just a little bit because I don't want too much of that and we'll go under filter again and right here it's already set to what I had done before so I'm just gonna click that yep boom there's our shadow on the inside so here's poster number one all set to present but it would be nice to have the matching set yes so is that green backgrounds the color that we do I don't know no I don't think so I just wanted to add a color so let's see what that might look like you know is that nice cream looks okay but where we selected the green background and the green shadow I'm gonna keep it like that for ya yeah sort of helps for it to pop oh yeah yeah I think the green definitely makes it pop yep if you knew what color it was going to hang on do you think you would yes set on that yeah but you don't know because I I don't I don't know yet she does want to have us work with her on some spatial design to try to tie in the branding with her space so sometimes we select for the client their color swatches for their space the textures or you know the different furniture they're going to have so that's really nice and such a treat to be able to work you know with all of that that's really cool that you're involved in so many different it's not just our brand but you're involved in so many different areas business and really like bringing their branding and yep to so many different yeah and I think it stems back to when my sister and I growing up our dad's an architect yeah and I think growing up you know we always joke that a lot of the kids growing up used to play like normal I Spy that color yeah except for us it was I Spy that architectural genre or something like that we spec dad it's so dorky but now I am so appreciative of the fact that he used to point out all these things that as a kid I thought were so boring now man oh right exactly so to be able to have a client hire us from the beginning stages and apply this to their space it's like it's like your child you know the dream come true to be able to do that so we have this one poster done and I know you know we don't have a ton of time but I'd like to start our second poster okay and we had a couple people asking in the beginning what there was going to precise so I'm going to set that right now I'm is set its inches I'm gonna go ten by fourteen set my resolution to 350 and create so we already set up our stuff in the beginning our swatches and our workspace is already set up so the second one will go a little bit faster for this one I wanted to show a man because it's not just exclusively women coming here but also I wanted to tie in something cool from Austin Texas so my idea was to show like part of this cityscape oh yeah and so I went through let's see here this one will work right so I I saw this and I was like oh my gosh this is gorgeous I want to visit here and I want to use part of this image so before I used to use like a lasso tool and go through and I cut out but and I don't know if anyone else ever has this problem occasionally it would close prematurely and make a selection that I didn't intend and there was no back up way to do that so I started using the pen tool a little bit more which I no wonder I know I know I should use it a lot more yeah but it works well with pulling out something like this because you can step back command-z if you make that error you can delete points and he's like you yeah we are gonna switch over to portfolio reviews really quick and then we'll come back to this image at the end and keep working on it great we have a little bit of time so we are gonna go into space and it'll be right back to do portfolio [Music] hello hello we are back for in space now but we're in our spaceship so we can take off our helmets yeah we came Wow quite a journey hardly hot in there baby toasty all right so we have some portfolios that Andrea is going to take the look at today I have the first one up right here oh wow yes this old Margaret Mathias says that he's a creative art director and creative retoucher which is really cool um and yeah let's take a look we didn't click into some other projects that there's one these are gonna look absolutely beautiful I think that you should definitely come teach in Adobe leather I can come watch what you're doing for this because this is gorgeous yeah I'd love to see this one right here I really like you want to scroll through oh my word this is cool I love the font choice yes very clean fun oh wow oh that's amazing you see the head up here and then as you scroll down there's a person that's incredible looking up so what does it say see this cover is about moral abuse and it was for a magazine mm it's very striking I love the black and white and the typography choices are fantastic and love that yellow coffee yellow I think in I like how you have a lot of different fonts on here I wonder what it would look like for the yellow font if it was something a little bit different or if there's a reason why it's more of a sort of handwritten style to the font I really do love the the color there though it's hard for me to say critique anything here it is absolutely gorgeous very very well done it reminds me of a poster there's a movie I think we learn our Leonardo DiCaprio where everything's upside down the poster covers yeah think of the title of it but it reminds me of something like that but I could see this as a film poster yeah and you come in yeah and I think it goes really well with with the theme that you're seeing just like you know a larger figure and a smaller figure and you kind of feel that tension of somebody like looming over your so great work yeah the concept is really nice let's see here I want to see this other of the packaging doesn't mean yeah was drawn to packaging yeah we go through the shops can't help but grab things oh man I buy everything based on packaging so and reading a little bit more about it so only two colors so the brand can speak first so that is quite the challenge and extremely impressive - you know limit their branding to two colors and very very cool I wonder did you create the the graphic like it looks like a fluid motion it was something that yes in someone said Inception Thank You Alexander that is the movie that I was action yes that I was talking about with the poster it's fantastic but this is wonderful also I wonder if he creates his own mock-ups to apply this is great and a little bit you know in wondering what the type of the product is that's in there and what's being shown sort of in the design there yeah it makes me think of juice or something like this and maybe that's what it is but then the container doesn't seem like juice maybe it's like ice cream err maybe I think it's a sort of a sorbet yeah that's very well and is something different and I'm not used to seeing on this shelf Sara more to see that's cool so I'm wondering if if he created that you know all himself it's very impressive hmm so he said using two colors and so it looks like we're introducing a few other colors here yes so maybe the organic line is pulling in the green oh he says that he they did the photos and he did their retouching for it oh it's great mm-hmm yeah I like that touch oh I love the pattern that's very subtle you know in the back that matches this swoosh here yeah yeah very well done yeah I like that a lot I think for the maybe for the organic line the organic I like how the leaf represents that and there could be a couple more or like collage I'm always more botanical maybe instead of there could be something that's created with that behind the sticker I would add a little bit more of the leaf design in there and very very well done use like 22 if you want oh so there's some cool no the unit this poster looks really cool here and I think it has birds in it as well animal production preservation okay oh wow this is beautiful [Music] so I'm wondering how he created if he created you know the image in the background if that was a a photo that he took and the whole process I really like the the pixelated sort of effect behind right back here adding a little bit of that texture he obviously did it very well with that refine brush that it looks amazing and so this is it was this a poster I'm thinking it might be I think you scroll down yeah let's see oh wow or I'm Mad Magazine come on me yep yeah so when looking at the magazine I like the font immediately my I went to the Z I went to the a and wondered if there's an abbreviation you know of the - um you know and I maybe if it was written out the a you know the same size as the other font because of right away I was thinking za when I saw and trying to read the cover but really like how it's all laid out I think you know doing magazine editorial design is very very challenging yes and to do it correctly and to do it well is difficult and this looks and everyone in the board is writing it's amazing yeah see oh wow yeah I love this the the font in this shape yeah that's very cool I think this is show on PBS that all the animals and all the structures are all words really having kids that's very cool yeah and I love the font choice for an editorial that's beautiful fond and it's quite different from all the other fonts that are in there mm-hmm so our next-door neighbor where I live is a cow farm so I see this all the time where I live and it's a beautiful you never get sick of seeing something like no it's gorgeous it's so nice I really love cows yes such cute faces um he says this time refer this project all the photos are from stock and he shows how he made it at the end of the project oh who knows that that's really cool yeah yeah when you can show how you like made something in your process in your portfolio I feel like that is really impressive it is because you don't know how many elements were amazed when I look at this I am assuming that he made the image you know that old looking paper yeah and curled up the edges like that which is so hard and so I'm excited to see towards the bond like how everything was done well it's it oh here it's a nice oh this is it on issue which is um issues of sight room can publish magazines online and then okay down here there's a video with this that's beautiful is this used I want to wondering if this is used in some sort of video promotional like something that's animated is this resistor showing the process I think this is just showing the process which is it's cool Wow yeah it's wonderful good job can I see them on with the turtle yeah quick turn oh yeah personal projects to improve my skills that's a really great thing to do in your portfolio too is to include personal project you're passionate about and practice but also attract the kind of work that you want to be doing yes definitely in the beginning stages when we started up our business a lot of it was pro bono work that we would do for people a lot of posters yeah but also a lot of projects that okay this is what we want to display because we want to attract the type of client and just by continuing to sort of stick to a style yeah you end up attracting clients who are incredible yeah this is beautiful it's so cool that how the turtle is the islands and I love that mm-hmm oh and then zooming in showing the details Wow mm-hmm oh I loved us and did you develop is this I wonder if you make these mock-ups there so it looks very realistic yeah in a video here yeah that's very very very details yeah I love seagulls wow how fun this is the type of work that I am in such awe of um you know I just it's something I wish I could do you know I just know that this is something to leave this to people who have such an incredible eye for something like this oh cool he says I actually learned so much by watching videos like this it's my project so if people can also learn that's really cool well great jobs you move on yeah yeah bar Brad this is fantastic definitely a style that um I don't even know where to begin I say no like oh my word very cool I see a large project which really relates to what you're doing today I think this is great how there are applied to I wonder if this is a mock-up or actual shoot where these are done there's no yeah I'd love to know a little bit more about the project and a little bit behind this to learn a little bit more about why the different flowers were selected it looks like they're actually Wow actually a princess do you not see here yeah this is very very beautiful hmm and I wonder if she shoots you know her own photography and then brings it in and it's editing I really really love this and I think it's great because it's similar sort of collage style I love the colors too so nice I love black and white and imagery and then adding him yeah I'd love to see that first one okay wow that's so cool looks like the skin is being peeled back almost and those hairs and the strings coming in from the hands that is a lot of detail incredible and yeah I really like the flowers that were brought in it looks like this was very school um University magazine um you magazine cover now this would definitely attract my attention if I saw this laying around I would it would stop me and you know I'd have to grab it to see what this is about yes I think when design is done very well and is very appealing you just can't help but stop in your tracks yeah what is this yes this is phenomenal beautiful time yeah great choice of photography huh and it looks like it's layered you know in these sections here like its reps kind of yeah a pieces of paper that are gonna players I didn't wonder if how how how she did that if it's something that was shot and there'd it's very very cool beautiful I'd love to know she has her own illustrations yes oh it's beautiful and in black and white very nice that's beautiful all right Oh some of these are very very cool it's t Vanessa yeah Wow yeah that's great I love how bold that text is and you know put on the filter like the player overlay something like that that really helps to have everything shine through behind it it's really really cool again like a poster like this would definitely make me stop and check out yes I love the hand again someone else who loves bringing in random lids and popping them into a graphic lancers oh nice because they they mimic the telephone wires up here but then they draw your eye down to the important information the date the time the place so you're you start up here and then you draw down and I do I really like how the sucking of this font to break it up you know matches you know how everything has been done sort of in a grid and in columns this very well laid out clothes that me here nice all the different pieces that fit with this they all match yeah looks great together yeah no that's very cool looks like some photos they're not in the actual event and then here's the flash be so nice as a designer you know when you know something like this is created and then you get to see your piece being used it's really fantastic very well done that's beautiful hmm good job Marshall oh these are nice I don't know what about the one over here the bird yet birds yep sticking with the theme yeah Wow this illustration is oh my goodness so the illustration I mean this is just incredible mm-hmm I'd love to see the process of how you know the different steps that are going into that I didn't even noticed the fly for a second I thought there was a fly on your so real right here yeah but I'd love to see you know the step by step how some you know how this is created Oh for an album so this is the music a music album we are the shadow I could definitely see that as a vinyl cover you know something that would a vinyl cover you would frame you really never opened yeah oh there it is see that's that's really nice these mock-ups are very nice yep I like the simplicity of the vinyl as well really nice font and then other bands Oh in that a poster yeah look oh I love the bird yeah the bottom great work looks really really good yeah good job mm-hmm so it would probably can pick one more yes I keep on looking at this the outtakes my oh another album a Russian musician pianist and composer the visual proposal is to highlight the main instruments in the album hmm oh that's that's wonderful beautiful yeah I love that pinions became home and I like that that hands have green on them and even like in nature well this I really like those a lot I love the color that blush short a peachy color and the green and the black and white it's all working so well together and there's neutral behind it to just make it pop yep and even the texture the subtle texture that's added behind there Justin is really really good oh that's nice to see it on there and how this would look on Spotify how beautiful I would definitely buy that shirt yes and that's just probably his music I'm a music video yeah amazing amazing work supernational yep we have just a couple more minutes if you want to jump back in for it yeah yeah I can go back to we were using the pin tool really quickly and the pen tool I'm going to use to cut out the cityscape here so I just click on different points of the building here and slowly it takes a while to go through and do this but it's a lot better than using the lasso tool and then having it closed on you so how many time make adjustments a lot easier exactly you can step back where you can't with your lasso tool yes so I wished it's a faster way to do this okay if you're just joining us i'm andrea is working on a series of posters for a client that's opening a spa in austin so this is the austin city skyline she's gonna incorporate into one of the collages and she's making yep and right after this is going to be the EXCI daily creative challenge ensuring the new challenge if you want to stay tuned for that learn all about X C and then after that will be an ACCI live stream here we go we can pull this up I'm excited to see that okay is very very cool yeah I think I'm trying to teach myself there are new programs when you're so used to somebody you've been using it's your comfort zone but it's I've found that XD is very very cool from what I've seen I think it's really useful mm-hmm and then we had the intro to the Photoshop daily creative challenge earlier with food ooh vows you can go back and re-watch that if you want to join the challenge and tomorrow Andrew will be reviewing some of those challenge challenges so and then finishing this up so I'd yeah and the client also hired us to do some social media graphics yes he'll be working on that yes you said some Instagram stories and I'm learning all about how to make some of those graphical elements in Photoshop so you don't only want to stay tuned for that I use Photoshop for everything yes but and one new thing that I've been trying and I'll be showing tomorrow that I really like is artboards yeah and housed about a shop and how simple it has made life and using artboards to lay out a workspace so that you can see what something looks like for you know your stories and the progression of click click click and then how everything that are having them all in different projects in different layers different windows yeah so for this I'm just adding in first a cityscape here I'm going to shrink it up a bit and also I'm going to skew the transformation just a little bit and one thing for this that I'd like to do is to kind of crop out some of these trees and create a more jagged geometric link to it a lot of these this before with the other poster you're going to end up seeing that a lot of it's going to be covered up with different elements but I still like to come in and kind of create some sort of geometric shape to this so all I'm doing right now is using the lasso tool and coming in and just creating different points I guess I could probably use the pen tool and then I'm going to connect it and just get rid of those little pieces there and so what I want to do now is to add in so like when I did that I notice over here I'm not really loving that little pieces no need for that building right there I want this one to also have some sort of botanical element and I think that using see here we had this one opened up before and we've made it black and white but for this poster I'd like to just keep it in full color and I think it would be easier to just do a quick selection of a color range you like the white select that and get rid of that and I don't love the stems here so yeah command D to deselect and then just come in you could definitely use a mask and to make this less permanent and yeah if he knew you you wanted to maybe bring them back or if you didn't you were unsure yep and so you can change the size of your eraser or brush by holding and I wish I knew the names of these the bracket Friday brackets that's what I'm always hopeful yeah I always got them back yeah where's the gentleman who helped us with the warp tool Tim yes what are these so it's just a quick and easy way yet to get in there so I'm going to drag these into our poster I want to bring that behind the city here and like I mentioned for this one I really want to bring in I think that I don't love this that's happening and I'm gonna flip it okay so the eyes it's kind of pointing there so I'm going I did command + T to select and I'm gonna hold shift to flip it over just a little bit and I think I might need to drag that out just a little bit more by holding the shift button yeah no I says square brackets yes thank you okay keys yet I'm going to get rid of these kind of distracting I think that they are that yeah there's no need to have those up in the top although I do like the other leaf that's right there I'll keep that in yeah they're just quickly erase these same with this I'm gonna just scrap that seems to be a bit distracting on the top so with this one I want to add in a silhouette of a man and I'll find that on here really quickly so it does you can also if you have a painting tool selected you can do control option key on a Mac or on Windows right Mouse other oness and you drag to geogebra size and that's one of those tips that's I think it makes things so much quicker when you can learn all these new apps for sure all that tricks I am going to cut out the background of this and I want him to actually face the other way and be looking out so I'm going to flip here and I want to remove this gray background so I think that the again the subject this like subject tool works really well it's gonna be kind of tricky with his scruff you know yeah that makes it a little challenging but we can go in and clean that up the refinement tools but I want to see I think that's all that we have time for today but we're gonna finish working on this tomorrow right yes we are and you'll be able to see how we'll apply this to the other poster and then do some social media assets perfect I'm really excited to see that so join us tomorrow um follow Andrea her Instagram is studio linear and we will see you tomorrow thanks for joining thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
