[Music] on today's show we're featuring crappies as the most popular panfish and certainly the largest we've spent quite a bit of time filming them and even more time trying to find them here are several fisheye views we came up with hope you enjoy this crappy youtube presentation and if so please like and subscribe let's take a look down under with this week's fish eye view sponsored by mercury number one on the water of the many species of panfish available to anglers the largest and most popular are crappies catching them however is often a case of feast or famine after ice out they predictably head for shallow bays that are first to warm up time it right and you'll find an absolute bonanza of crappies because warm water rises the upper layer is where you should be fishing highly structure oriented a float and jig combo is the best way to search out docks and other features that draw fish and it's best to keep things close to the surface how close real close crappies are programmed to ambush prey from below during summer crappies spread out making them difficult to find and stay on top of consistent locations are floating docks anchored boats and boat houses look for any heavily shaded cover the darker the better and pitch bait deep into the zone because they can be very picky always carry a good selection of baits and don't forget that old standby minnows during summer and winter crappies often suspend over deep water where a fish finder is a must once located try vertical jigging to ferret out the biggest slabs don't be afraid to upsize that bait we found the lindy darter ideal for the purpose each spring just after ice out anglers are treated to a bonanza of crappies areas that warm up early draw most of the fish that includes the upper level of the water column for these reasons they're concentrated in predictable locations and easy to find after this windfall crappies become extremely difficult to locate they can still be taken however even during the hottest days of summer knowing where to look is the secret weed beds with heavy growth are always a good bet places you might see bluegill or largemouth for instance spot one crappie in this type of situation and you've found others on weed filled blakes that can be like finding a needle in a haystack the trick is to only search dense growths adjacent to deep water the real thing to look for are places with maximum shade even total darkness yes crappy are night feeders floating docks are always worth a try anchored boats also factor in narrowing the search down that only applies to craft with dark hulls rather than the nearly universal white or aluminum covered boathouses near deep water are far and away the best locations bottom line is find the dingiest venue on any lake and you'll find summer crappie in recent years the popularity of crappies has skyrocketed little wonder their gourmet table fare and a real challenge to boat consistently finding them is only half the battle getting them to hit is another matter carrying a wide range of baits is always a good idea crappies are quite fussy when it comes to color and it really pays to make changes assuming you've located them and found a working bait there's still the matter of presentation crappies are picky when it comes to movement for the most part quick up down actions trigger them into striking the same goes for search baits when covering water jerky retrieves let you know where they are if that fails to produce slow down and experiment with swimming actions when that bite stops change it up again try anything and everything even musky tactics if necessary no matter what you do there's one thing that remains constant crappies prefer to hit from below as a matter of fact they'll bend over backwards to do so and given the right situation they can easily be taken on surface lures simply work close to cover and you can experience sight fishing for big slabs at times they rival bass for explosive top water action eventually however reality kicks in there will be times when crappies feel somewhat less [Music] enthusiastic [Music] you
