corpus christi has over 325 000 people and is known as the sparkling city by the sea located in southern texas right about here on a map corpus christi is located on the gulf of mexico tucked behind padre and mustang islands with notably high wind speeds the city is one of the best in north america for kite boarding what i was like what the hell is kiteboarding okay surfing and sailing it's actually a great city for a lot of coastal and outdoor activities due to its proximity to the water being only 160 miles north of mexico you can easily take a day trip out of the country home to texas a m and two naval air stations there are all kinds of people here and even more destinations and attractions to keep everyone entertained so let's go ahead and take a look at the top 10 things that makes corpus christi a great place number 10 padre island national seashore the location of corpus christi being so close to the gulf of mexico puts you close to many different types of terrain if you're looking for something to do outdoors that involves nature and aren't wanting to go to the regular city beach the padre island national seashore is a good option it's the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world and stretches 70 miles from end to end it's full of natural beauty and has hundred and thirty thousand acres of pristine beaches sand dunes and grassland habitats it's also a major migratory bird route and home to 350 species of birds there are tons of marine life including sea turtles this is a great way to experience the gulf of mexico in pure form and you can even camp on the shore if you wanted to this is one of few places in the area where you can get this close with nature number 9 uss lexington commissioned in 1943 the uss lexington was heavily involved in world war ii and is known as the blue ghost nicknamed that because the japanese have claimed to have sunk the ship during combat only to have it reappear in action somewhere else today you can tour the aircraft carrier and see vintage aircrafts as well as seeing places on the ship like the command deck and the quarters there are also scale models simulators games and an escape room guided tours will show you around and there are even rumors that people have experienced paranormal happenings on this ship if you wanted to look for ghosts you might find some taking a tour of the uss lexington is like visiting a living museum and will give you a look into military history number eight texas state aquarium the texas state aquarium is one of the best family friendly attractions in the city and is a favorite amongst tourists and residents there are thousands of sea life animals representing over 330 different species the dolphin bay area has atlantic bottlenose dolphins while the near shore portrays life at the shoreline where there are sand dunes that are home to stingrays shorebirds and american alligators one of the highlights is an island of steel habitat which is a replica of the offshore oil platform that has a 125 thousand gallon tank that has sharks red snapper and barracuda there's a lot to see and do here aside from all the displays there are also exhibits dive shows touch pools and feeding demonstrations make sure to check out the aquarium if you're into sea life number seven south texas botanical gardens perhaps one of the most calm relaxing and beautiful sights in the city is the south texas botanical gardens consisting of an orchid house and hibiscus garden it's a colorful and vibrant way to explore the region's floral offerings set on 180 acres there are also amazing trails for walking and exploration along the way you'll see numerous kinds of trees shrubs grasses and cacti there's also an abundance of wildlife in the area you may encounter the botanical gardens is a nice place to visit to take time for yourself and to reflect while you're surrounding yourself with peaceful things number six art museum of south texas corpus christi is full of art installations murals and sculptures and there is a big art community the art museum of south texas is one of the top cultural attractions in the city and is housed in a modern building set right in the waterfront the mission is to focus on the region's multicultural heritage and share it with its visitors home to seven art galleries artist studios and ever-changing exhibits this is where you need to go to see and study artwork the museum also hosts educational programs lectures and musical performances and it's definitely worth a stop in while you're nearby number five what a burger field if you love baseball but don't feel like driving to a larger city to see a game head to whataburger field right in corpus christi home to corpus christi's hooks the double a affiliate of the houston astros it is the premier place in town to see a good baseball game opened in 2005 at a cost of 25 million dollars it can hold just over 7 000 spectators it's not a very large stadium by any means but it gets the job done not only are there baseball games there but they also host other events like movie nights which is fun for people of all ages and interests it would be worth the effort to see if there's a game being played so you can check it out for yourself while you're in town number four aransas national wildlife refuge another great outdoor area that will immerse you in nature is the 70 000 acre aransas national wildlife refuge this one's a little north of the city but it's really unique and worth the drive if you want to check it out it is not only established as a home for endangered whooping cranes but it also has alligators snakes and birds living in the salt marshes grasslands and freshwater ponds there are numerous walking trails and a scenic drive that provides awesome views of the refuge there's also an observation tower with scopes to see the wildlife this is another great outdoor option that's close to the city number three museum of science and history the corpus christi museum of science and history is fun for people of all ages but especially for kids it features over 40 000 square feet of history and science exhibits showcasing the past 500 years of history related to south texas there are all kinds of exhibits there including artifacts from historic shipwrecks decorative arts environmental pieces and items specific to corpus christi this is a great way to learn about the history of the area in a fun and interactive way number 2 corpus christi bay trail this is a really cool way to check out the city spend some time outside and get some exercise in you can take a stroll along the corpus christi bay trail you can walk jog or bike along the trail as it is nine miles from end to end it'll take you past some of the city's top destinations like the museum of science and history and the art museum you'll also pass marinas concert venues a campus and multiple parks that overlook the water see the city in the coastline along with other great points of interest by taking this trail number one selena museum selena is a beloved figure in corpus christi to this day she was the best selling latina singer when her life was tragically ended when she was only 23 years old back in 1995. this museum celebrates and showcases the life of the woman who now resides at the seaside memorial park at the park is a life-size bronze statue that is visited by many inside the museum you'll find many personal effect from the late singer including outfits shoes records and awards there are also exhibits with stories about her life a reproduction of her recording studio and a porsche that she owned visiting the museum is a great way to learn more about selena and what she was all about and you can see how much the city of corpus
