hello this is rv vagabond jerry and today i am in corpus christi texas and in this video i'm going to show you several things around corpus christi that you can see for free free things to do or see around corpus christi and i'm starting off with the statue you see behind me which is called the demon of corpus christi and he certainly does look like a demon the devil maybe even with his pitchfork the devil always seems to have a pitchfork but he seems to have had a serious mishap with his left foot there now i read online some history of this statue and it originally was somewhere else i forget what it was about but when it wasn't wanted where it was anymore someone managed to have it moved here although i think it's been here for about 40 50 years now if you want to see it for yourself look up gray's recycling that's where it is i guess they own it just a little item of curiosity here the demon of corpus christi next thing i want to show you is north beach which is just about a quarter a half mile from the uss lexington and the texas state aquarium it's a very nice beach and you can see the birds really like it and there is a paved sidewalk that goes around the beach it's got some pretty nice thick kind of fluffy sand and there is the lexington which is an aircraft carrier and i think this beach should be popular with tourists because this beach you don't need a parking permit like the ones you do out on the island and there is a fajitaville restaurant here which i have never heard of but it's right at the beach so you can spend the day here and then go have lunch at fajitaville in fact right in front of ajitoville you can play volleyball nice so here is the uss lexington aircraft carrier and when i was here in april 2018 i did a full video of the ship they do charge an admission but when i was here i was on my little mobility scooter and they said that disabled gets free admission to the ship i was not disabled but i guess i looked like it being on that little scooter they also have some displays out front here here's a real torpedo and an anchor that looks like it's at least 10 feet long and here is a navy plane a4b skyhawk i'm not sure what this ball is for but you can barely move it on the sand there and then over here is a couple 50 caliber anti-aircraft guns and here's some more info on the ship if you're interested you can look up that video i did all over the ship there are several small planes up there on the platform there's the fajitaville and this north beach ends right here at the lexington now just across from the bay bridge right across from the lexington are several museums corpus christi museum of science and history texas state museum of asian cultures the museum of hispanic culture and this is called heritage park where there are several historic houses and these are all within a few blocks of each other of the museums on chaparral street also in the neighborhood here across the bay from the lexington is the art museum of south texas it's not exactly free there is one freebie piece of art you can see right out front here i was planning to go in it but i'm here on a monday and guess what day it's closed this is the surf club and one thing you can see here is the texas surf museum i read online that it is a free museum the door there is locked and there's no sign saying what the hours are or anything so that's a disappointment to me to not be able to go in and see what's there very nice little woody wagon they have here though so next time you're around here come by and check and see if it's open this is the street right behind the surf museum looks like somebody tried to recreate the bourbon street of new orleans and did a pretty good job i must say this whole square is called the water street market and another thing they have here of interest is called the music walk of fame where they have these stars on the sidewalk here sisters morales karen abrahams rusty weir anchor watt now i'm not familiar with these names right in front of the surf museum is joe king carrasco and in front of the woody wagon is michael naismith from the monkeys this whole plaza is lined with these stars with the musical talents names on them here's auggie myers he was with the sir douglas quintet which is a band i really like from san antonio and in front of this whatever it is it's chris christopherson and of course selena nice and at the address of 100 shoreline boulevard is the corpus christi art center which is a free museum open tuesday through saturday and right beside the building here is a couple who i think has been waiting a long time for this place to open another thing to see along shoreline boulevard is the selena memorial and it's here because corpus christi was selena's hometown but most importantly she was family an inspiring presence in the community and an artist who brought cheer and happiness to her new mobile fans forever here's a plaque with some info it's kind of hard to read [Music] the lettering needs to be cleaned up a little it's right along the eddy here and if you go about five miles further south along the coast you will see this cemetery where selena's grave is it's a huge cemetery so let me show you how to find it the first thing you'll see is this fountain you turn left here go left down the first lane and then you'll come to another circle here so you go around this circle but continuing straight down the same lane and just a little ways down on the right you will see it right here it has this fence around it here it says on there selena 25 and here is a carving of her head and this is what it says below it it's locked of course but you can get a good look at it another thing to see and do for free in corpus christi is the oso bay wetlands preserve and learning center they have a huge building here that's the learning center which is closed and this sign says however there are still plenty of programs to register for okay what i see is a children's playground over there and this pond which i don't see anything living in it there's a couple birds in the middle that are not really living and this looks like it's intended to be a seat doesn't look very comfortable you can't even hardly sit down on it i don't really know anything about this place it's a large property but it looks like it's pretty much just trees that are still dead from the winter you can try and stay out of the wetlands crossing there i think this and this is intended to be a splash pad so i think once people accept that covet is no longer the big scare it once was and they opened things up here this might be an interesting place to spend the day especially in the late spring when everything is starting to turn green again i found an unusual submarine it's the rv needlefish padre islander the padre islander is this beachwear gift shop on padre island that is just across from corpus christi let's look at some of this detail here oh it looks like it is starting to go bad propellers in good shape though but i wouldn't trust it with these windows it is starting to rust out i think and if it hits you it's going to do some damage down here they've got it out front here on the road advertising their business just don't look too close at the condition i guess the danger is if you cut yourself touching something here i wonder if it was ever really in service what do you think folks and lastly is white cat beach it's a very popular beach just across the bridge from corpus christi on padre island but it's one that you cannot park overnight at they have litter bags and trash cans but that is about it by the way i'm here in corpus christi the last week of january and it has been warm every day even when it's totally heavily overcast and dark it's still warm and the day when i was in town i was actually sweating it was hot but yes there are kids playing in the beach it must be popular because it's so close to corpus christi now the sand on the dunes there is pretty nice soft sand but out here it is just muddy i wouldn't consider this a very nice beach to spend much time on at all and look at all this white stuff it looks kind of foamy i don't know what it is and a lot of debris on the beach here they do require a parking permit it's twelve dollars for a calendar year so if you're here only once it's going to cost you 12 for the day but if you come 12 times during the year then it's just one dollar per day i'm gonna go see if it looks any better further down the beach there well no it's not looking any better down here in fact it's getting muddier this is definitely not a place where you would want to pull an rv into so let me show you what i think is a much better beach that is pretty close from here as well this is access road 3a beach which is just a little ways north of whitecap it's a much larger beach that has a lot more sand and nice fluffier sand than white cap and you can overnight camp here up to three days it is free camping but you do need that 12 annual pass they do have trash cans and porta potties well folks i hope you've enjoyed this video of several things to see and do around corpus christi that is free so if you like free things maybe you'll like this video good day folks
