unique craft training center continually work to provide degree programs job training and skills to support the workforce for the increasingly diverse industries that grow our local economy the coastal community is conveniently located between san antonio and the rio grande valley and the mexican border with major highways and an international airport corpus christi is easily accessible from anywhere corpus christi's origins can be traced to the trading post started by colonel henry l kinney in 1839 right after texas gained its independence from mexico near the nueces river on a native american karankawa site known as the old indian trading grounds kinney's trading post was situated on land that was still claimed by both mexico and texas resulting in many confrontations which made the area unsafe for business but in 1845 after texas became the 28th state in the union united states general zachary taylor set up a command post at kinney's trading post this was a catalyst that formed kinney's small and struggling trading post into the city that would become corpus christi once the mexican american war ended in 1848 corpus christi's population and opportunities for business ventures grew corpus christi's economy is built around tourism agriculture and the oil and gas industries the military routes that helped found corpus christi continue today with the naval air station and the corpus christi army depot the largest helicopter repair facility in the world as major employers other industries such as construction and healthcare round out what makes the sparkling city by the sea the hub of commerce in the coastal bend padre island home of the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world is a sandy strip 113 miles long and less than two miles wide it protects corpus christi and the surrounding areas from open weather and waves of the gulf the padre island national seashore a national park that protects 70 miles of natural habitat is a favorite spot for nature enthusiasts from around the world the national park has gained international attention as a safe nesting ground for the world's rarest and most endangered sea turtles the kemp's ridley sea turtle every year corpus christi receives thousands of visitors to witness the protected hatchlings make a dash back to their gulf home [Music] corpus christi's location brings more than human visitors to the area its location on the migration flight path for a wide variety of birds has allowed corpus christi to officially lay claim as the birdiest city in america not surprisingly visitors flocked to the area to watch hundreds of species of rare and protected birds more than just a protective barrier for the downtown the architecturally notable stuffed seawall completed in 1941 also serves as a gathering place for walking biking running and many cultural events the deep water port of corpus christi is a huge driver for the city's economy and a factor in the community's rapid industrial growth it is the third largest port in the usa by tonnage and grants super tankers and giant ships access to import and export tons of energy and agriculture cargos in fact corpus christi is known as the energy port of the americas this industrial growth bodes well for the economy with an extensive system of bays and estuaries two-thirds of corpus christi is actually underwater making the area a destination for fishing sailing surfing and almost every water sport the corpus christi skyline is dominated by the harbor bridge built in the 1950s this through arc bridge spans the ship channel as a major investment in the area economy a new cable stay bridge is under construction to allow newer larger ships and more bikes and pedestrians to access the bustling port the area's vibrant arts and culture scene adds that splash of color and fun to our coastal bend lifestyle by adding many activities and attractions from unique events like dia de los muertos festival barefoot mardi gras beach
