welcome back to work different woodworking it those of y'all that watch my videos kind of recognize the background this ain't my shop where my dad shop and today he's going to go over and give us kind of porting system than I did a few weeks ago when I kind of went over the one-way system so bad come on in tell them about welcome to my shop I'm Joe's dad what we're going to do today is go through the McNaughton system I started out with the one way core system which Sean has and liked it and used it but I try to bring Austin and I liked it better it gives me more flexibility whereas the one way system is concentric and it's cat it's got support the m'naghten system gives me a lot more versatility and it's a captured system and we'll all go through how I go about using it today we're looking at this AM blank it is 18 inches diameter six and a half inches deep I've already grounded it they got the outside shape of proxy where I wanted what I need to do now is decide how I'm going to take the blank out I'm realizing I can probably get three bowls out of it this is a Tennessee diameter normally people go with it 10% rule I'm dropping it a little bit shorter than that I'm going to make the outside bowl one half hitches stick so right there it's going to be by outside Bowl mimei not in - is if I create the matchstick so I'm going to have to have a space in here for my tool to cut out so this portion right in here is going to go away when I do Mike we're going to do my cut the next Bowl is going to be about 14 HD diameter so I'm going to go an inch and a quarter on it so that would be my bowl take them take my 3/8 inch out for my tool I'm going to get rid of this portion right here so those are my 1/2 third third bowl blank that's the front of it now I need to take that same dimensions and come to the top and work that we had marked the front of the blank now we want to mark the top of the blank so we can see how our depth is going to be asked this again is a six and a half inch depth we mark the front of the bowl but now I want to mark the top the blank is mounted on a one-way chuck with a recessed jaws so I'm going into the wood apart we 3/8 of an inch to clamp that 3/8 of an inch will go in that far so that's going to be the bottom surface of the blank I need I need to make the thickness of the first bowl 1/2 inches so from here there's one 1/2 so that right there will be the bottom of the inside of the first bowl I have 3/8 of an inch tool the more you move when I cut that out so that right here will be removed the second flank was one and a quarter inches so there is one 1/4 so this is number one that's going to be number two bowl again 3/8 approximately for my tool and then the last number 3 Bowl so here is the first bowl blank this second bowl blank and the third bowl blank there is probably space here to get 1/4 but it's going to be so small I am I going to do a deal with it so that's the way we want to do it now the next thing we need to do is decide and look at our tool path and we'll do that usually want to do that I'm up high look you down and I will show it now ok I'm standing above the boat line now so I can see where everything is at right there is where my tool is going to remove wood I want to come back over and set my tool and an angle to where it's going to come out exact place on the front where I want and then I want to sort of market so you can see there is how it's going to be looking next thing I want to do is slowly draw my blade out following the same line where I come over to where I'm right where is going to come out and I'm now looking to where my tool is pointing and you'll see that in a second that gives me or so when I come in I can just push it right on through and I get my correct angle so when I come back through it I just push it right on through that same angle it'll come right after where I want and take my bowl out and I do this second one exactly the same way it just so happens that both of the points at the same point so I'm all right this is a tested to arrest for the igniter and basically the tool is is captured between two poles is capture the bottom and it's catching the top so when it cocked in place and you hold it there it's not going to move you want to set your height of your tool rest to where you're just under center you don't want to be above spinner because then you're going to be cutting and you've got a much hotter deeper for a catch will be sliding below Center so you're scraping next you want to get your angle coming in now I'm starting out with a straight but I want to go in about a hat trick where it's an inch with my straight tool just to get started so I'm spot I'm looking at the path in here get where I want to go and adjusting my direction to where it's right there so I'm going to go in about 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch on both over to get started here we [Music] jaesi first got it started that little happiness that I want to get please notice that I'm getting nice shadings off which is what I wanted also notice that even though I've got three horsepower motor on this thing I'm still bogging you down so you've got to go a little bit slower so now I want to move and get my second starting point [Music] you'll notice I was getting shavings off but I was still blowing it down you're looking at the tip of my straight tool on McNaughton there is a layer of very hard metal right on on the top which is what your cut cutting with so when you sharpen this tool you always want to sharpen from the edges not the top because you don't want to wear off your cutting circuits this is the this triangle is the way it comes from the factory a number of people will square that front off I have a number of my tools that are squared off the advantage of squaring it off is that you remove less material and it's a little bit easier for me going through however if you're doing good that it's got a lot of figure to it like a burl then this is probably a better tool to use for those particular pieces if you want to sharpen it comes time to sharpening you just want to get that that top circuit and that's it that's all it takes I got my starting point now now I want to get my replaced this tool with my curve tool and start pouring out the bowl okay let me get this this is my curve tool you'll notice it is it is a flat top it was the one I was using to measure my ankle just the one I'm gonna cut my boat with if you remember who your first started we were looking at where I was going to have this thing pointed when you get it lined up to where you're pointing at this that's the direction you want you want to sort of push it on through and as it cut the path it will your tool will follow those exact same curvature all the way through so you'll stay on on path you can begin to slightly pull it one away or push it the other way and come off of it but it will just stay pushing straight on and not moving the sides it will just follow the path straight on through the way that you wanted to go the point right here the nice thing about getting Austin is a point here where you're touching gives you like a fulcrum so if you hold that focal steady pushing it on through and goes exactly where you want but this thing will turn a number of people will lock down the set screw to hold it in one particular place I can leave it a little loose so that if I'm going in and I recognize I need to move a little bit I can sort of move that fulcrum just a little bit and now I got a slightly different path that I'm going through so here we go and we get ready to start you want to keep upward pressure to keep this blade pressing against the top pressing it's the Barnett leverage so that stays straight here we go as I was cutting just in you can see I was getting some nice jammies coming off and slowly pushing it in but I was getting ahead of myself and my approach is simply to take this ball out first so I want to come back and go with a small bowl I'm almost there I'm going a little bit further and then I could pop it out I was already there I want to review I started cutting through I was twisting all the way through and then I does the tool father's path all the way to the center and basically broke out the cord again I had my tool tailstock there holding in place it was not going to come come out so there I am I could have if I had caught it sooner I could have stopped to arresting a cop and hit it would just pop right out here's that first blank coming out and what I like to do is check and see how was that followed I'm at right now my sickness but when are you 3 inches as you can see that's exactly where I want it to be so I follow my tool straight through so now I need to come back in and just take this one out and I'll have me a second full blank right there [Music] I find it much easier as you said you saw it my first blank out put it around kind of centered it as best I could and then you put a tenon on it that way now it's ready to go to round out later now we're back to cut out the second Bowl a few minutes ago you might want United notice as I was turning that I went over and put a little bit of time locking down my headstock I this is you know he'd be vibrating a little bit and it shouldn't have so timing that down help to remove some of that vibration at the same time I think it's always that maddening advantageous have your tail stock in place while you're turning to make it stable so since I removed that out I am moving that tail stock in close with a small jam tuck there to hold it in place I'm using a jam Chuck so I get pressure more evilly driven over the bowl blank at the same time that brings it tailstock in closer and gives me more room out here to aim so now we go about cutting a second Bowl out I'm getting ready to line up again to do the second Bowl I got my angle coming in here I can see where my tool once they pointed out so I'm coming right where I want to be at but I would like to explain a little bit of how this Tool Works this to refworks to be captured a little bit more this is the tool rest it is basic three components your post your captive holder in the back and your in your middle in it they're all just they all swing differently so when I come in here put it in place I can this will move a little bit but I want this to be able to move support my top because as I come around if it stay then I come around then I'm locked I can't go any more but I can move this thing on over so I can end up following the path I want to go all the way through so here we go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] we finished here our three Bowl blanks as we intended I wouldn't have saying it was a little bit more difficult this time than normal I think the Elm was cause to me to combine a little bit more than than I would normally expect but it turned out pretty well and again I like to mcnugget because it gives me the freedom to adjust have where we need to adjust if you've never used be known please consider it take your good course have fun thank you well I hope you enjoyed that I use a one-way system that he left me to use it has a tool rest that follows a cutting edge in there or support where if this one has a captured ring to do it it's entirely different setups but this one tends to give you a little bit more flexibility as he showed you well I hope you enjoyed this run a few tips please remember these videos are subsidized from viewers like y'all so visit our website for theater calm worst efforts calm where we sell gold is just like this other containers boxes I even make some shot made tools occasionally we have them all up there and a lot of projects you see me build will eventually make it to the webstore and those sales help subsidize these videos but there are other ways you patronize us all that information is available on horse ever calm and I want you to remember one last thing it is always worth the effort to learn create and share with others y'all be safe and have fun
