Michael McCrea dr. Vincent's I'm an emergency physician there I'm the assistant program director for the emergency medicine residency so y'all ready for this you're not so you think you are that's good I'm glad that you're confident so that's good so today's a big day and I think when I came last year to this I thought back to when I had our white coat ceremony and in it meant a little bit it means a lot more to the family and the back because you got here so congratulations to all of you for that overtime today will mean more because it's the beginning last night when I R I should say this morning at 1 o'clock when I left my shift I said one of my partner's is a guy you know I got to get home I got to do the white coat ceremony and and she's a MC oh grad as well some of us still say MC oh and I always will it's not you t to us but it it's MC oh and I said yeah I have to go to the white coat ceremony this morning sick yeah that was kind of a big deal I said yeah it kind of was and then she stood there and she thought about just like it was a really big deal it is so on behalf of the Alumni Association we have 8500 alumni from the Medical College of Ohio in the University of Toledo College of Medicine life sciences congratulations and enjoy your white coats and some stethoscope sigh we're debating up here have you gotten your stethoscope yet good you're welcome congratulations we weren't sure so those were provided by our alumni for you as well as the white coats and welcome to the University Toledo College of Medicine [Applause] so part of the tradition of the white coat ceremony is to present gifts to the incoming class to remind you of the responsibilities of the profession you've chosen for your life's work as you just heard from dr. McCrae the University of Toledo college of medicine and life sciences Alumni Affiliate has generously generously provided the white coats for each student in addition each coat has a gold lapel pin with a stethoscope in the shape of a heart just like the logo on the front of the program the pins are a gift from the Harnett P Gould foundation a public foundation dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine at this time I will call each student's name and have you come forward to the center of the stage where you will be cloaked with your first white coat dr. who have supported me in the past and those who will share in my future knowing my own limitations in those medicine I will commit to a lifelong journey of learning how to cure relieve and comfort with humility and compassion I make these promises solemnly freely and upon my honor congratulations and thank you very much you may be seated Wow ladies and gentlemen doctors to be students and Friends we've witnessed a remarkable event we've seen 175 men and women commit themselves to a special journey of growth and discovery and that commitment is to become a physician and we symbolize that today when they put on their white coats you look a little different in those clean white coats and the question is are you different and have you significantly changed you know putting on the white coat is a symbol of professional attire and you're on the pathway to be a professional a professional for whom others will literally trust their lives to you and that will happen sooner than you think I believe that all meaningful change begins with the promise and it may be a promise to yourself the promise to the loved ones who are seated behind you or a promise to an entire roomful of people just a few moments ago you made a promise a promise upon your honor in front of these witnesses you did so freely and the oath that you took speaks to accepting the privilege privilege and the responsibilities given to you today you spoke about honesty of integrity humility and compassion you committed to recognizing your own strengths and weaknesses and developing the qualities that will earn the respect of others the respect of your family your friends and most importantly the people that you will serve your promise to all of those here in the room but also to your mentors and to your teachers and to the communities in which you will ultimately serve and to the patients who rely and Trust on your care along the way there's going to be a few challenges I'm here to tell you that you're going to work harder than you think is possible so moms and dads families and friends when your newly minted student says this is really hard they're not exaggerating as we like to remind them the first semester is about 29 credit hours roughly twice the workload of an undergraduate student it's a lot of work you're gonna live with and most importantly we are here to get you through that you're gonna live with decisions that you'll need to make those decisions will be difficult at times to measure up to the promise will not be easy but none of you would be seated in these seats wearing your new white coats if you are looking for the easy route we know that you worked very very hard to get here and we know that you will continue to work hard and importantly we are here with you on this journey the promise you're doing today to become a physician that journey it takes you on is a wonderful journey it is one of the greatest things that I have done in my lifetime I can't imagine having done anything differently today though for the rest of the day you're gonna have time to rest and celebrate with your family and friends please do that this is the celebration of the beginning of a marathon a few of us have completed that 26.2 mile race and when you've done that you know that the balloons and the bands and the banners at the front of the race have little to do with completing a 26 mile run but that bands and the balloons are appropriate at the beginning of the journey because it celebrates the commitment to run the race and all the preparation that leads to the journey so with that I wish to congratulate your students your families on your magnificent achievements and on taking this path with us today we're going to begin a new chapter in our collective lives you selected out of 3652 applicants are the best and brightest you are the best suited for the professional quest ahead we don't make mistakes you are here because you've earned this our most sincere welcome and our warmest congratulations to you welcome to the University of Toledo College of Medicine life sciences family you are part of the family the audience were completed with the ceremony for friends and family you may now exit we're going to ask the students to remain in their seats for a few moments so we can get a class picture there'll be plenty of time for photos with family and friends in a few minutes with the students and thank you so much for attending our ceremony you [Applause] you
